[newbie] RE: [XFree86] No Keyboard

2004-07-21 Thread Conrad Song

I had the same problem with Mandrake 10.0 + XFree86
4.4.0: thekeyboard lockedin runlevel 5, but not runlevel 3.
I finally started disabling modules using
interactive boot anddisabled Mandrake's "keytable" module. Disabling
it worked for me. It wasn't necessary, but you maywant to disable
the "numlock" module as well.

It doesn't necessarily prove that "keytable" is the
culprit, but certainly there is some interaction
involved.

It has been sometime that I used Partition Magic 7, but certainly it gives
table errors when Diskdrake formats them, but if you want you can have it
correct them and diskdrake will either correct them again, or do nothing and
Mandrake will boot just the same.

I used partition magic 7.0 to format all the partitions on the drive, the win
98, win 2000, in my case, at the front of the drive, then all the linux
partition's after that as ext2 which is the only way that it can format linux
natives. Then install Linux O/S and have it format the partitions you're
using for those as you create and give the mount points. Then as above:-
either never look at them again with partition magic or allow it to fix the
errors it sees and all will be well.

Red Hats diskdruid complains of Mandrake's diskdrake partitioning incorrectly
as well as partition magic. But usually states that it can work within those
parameters. So I really don't know how the errors affect anything, other than
esoterically or pedantically?

Everything still runs, but it is best to have Windows at the front of the
drive in the first partition.

Charlie.

The way that I would have done it:

Use partition magic to move all active Windows partitions to the front of
the drive and re-order the drive designations if necessary (C:, D:, E:,
etc). Shrink the Windows partitions to leave free space at the end of the
drive. Make the free space into a single fat32 partition. When everything
looks right from windows and Partition Magic, uninstall partition magic.
Boot with the Mandrake boot CD and use diskdrake to create the Linux
partitions in the unused fat32 partition at the end of the drive. Do it
this way, and you won't have to mess around with hiding partitions, etc.,
and LILO can handle your boot records.

Partition Magic can be useful (I keep a copy around), but it has
limitations, one of which is that it can only create Linux ext2 and I
always use and recommend a journaling system (I use ReiserFS). Another is,
it can interact with diskdrake and cause partition table errors. Diskdrake
is a very good tool, but it can mess up the Partiton Magic tables--that's
why I don't leave PM on my disks after I'm done with it.

Two words, If I way.
As mentioned above, move windows' partitions to the front but don't create any
fat32 partition, just leave unused space over there. Then boot from Mandrake
CD and create swap and linux native from that free space... It worked at my
box...
And the second is that Partition Magic 8 recognize and can create ext3, though
changing anything with PM really messes up Diskdrake's tables...

[newbie] XFCE4 looks like KDE...huh?

2004-07-21 Thread Margot
I've been using XFCE4 for a while now after switching from KDE -
much quicker to load, simple layout, does what I want it to
do...until now.

I set a nice simple desktop layout - panel at the bottom, icons
growing up the right hand side, taskbar at the top, a plain purple
background with a small picture of my cat in the middle so I have a
friendly face to look at when all windows are closed - my one
concession to eye candy!

Last night, while I was checking my emails, my desktop changed
itself! I still have the same XFCE4 layout of panel, icons and
taskbar, but my purple cat background disappeared and was replaced
with what looks like KDE! Blue background, stars 10 logo bottom
right, and a sprinkling of icons - the very same icons that I
created on my desktop when I used KDE!

Too tired to deal with it last night, so closed down left it to
the morning. Booted logged in this morning, got a quick flash of
my normal purple cat background, then the KDE lookalike background
appeared again!!!

Right-clicking on the desktop itself, and selecting the Change
Desktop Background option, I get the standard Mandrake choices -
what I'm seeing at the moment. And I tested the icons - they work
(on a double-click).

Using the XFCE4 settings launcher from the panel and choosing
Desktop:backdrop it shows that I have selected the purple
background with the centred picture of my cat - but this is not
being displayed!

What have I broken? How do I fix it?

I had a similar problem when I first started using pekwm. Everytime I
fired up nautilus it also brought up the gnome background. I discovered
that 'nautilus --no-desktop' fixes this problem. I am not sure if
KDE/konquerer has a similar feature but it might be something to look
into.

[newbie] recording to my hard drive

2004-07-21 Thread Eric Jackson
Hi,
I have recorded several lps to CD over the last few weeks. Yesterday when
I tried to do some recording, nothing happened. To clarify, I could hear
the sound but it wasn't recording. I tried using both Audacity and
Gramofile and no luck with either.

I have 3 mixers installed (at least). Kmix, AlsaMixer and Aumix. (Should I
uninstall some?) When I look at the mixers I don't see any reason why it
won't record. Anybody got a clue what the problem might be?

I'm not sure if this is relevant or not but since the last time I recorded
an lp I installed a DVD burner and a second hard drive.

There is sound, as loud as I want it, but in half-second bursts, if you

finish if I'm feeling masochistic, but it's as if some DJ with a
neuro-motor disease was trying to scratch the record from the back of a
pick-up on a bumpy road, ya know?

Is it an ISA card? If so, I had to do some manual work to get the
 drivers loaded the first time.

The card is a sound chip 16 Bit Compaq PremierSound on the motherboard
(I'm on a Compaq Armada 1750 laptop). I have a printout from a German
Suse page (sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/laptop_daten_compaq_armada-1750.html)
which says that the soundcard is detected as a Generic ESS ES1688 base
soundcard or motherboard and that it is Supported by ALSA Version
0.4.2. ALSA detects the sound chip as a ESS Audio Drive ES1688. The
laptop quick specs say it is a Sound Blaster Pro-compatible with 16-bit
stereo Compaq Premier Sound.

All this to say that I don't really know what an ISA card is :\

The required module seems to be there:

#find /lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/ -name *1688*
/lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/sound/isa/es1688
/lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/sound/isa/es1688/snd-es1688-lib.ko.gz
/lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/sound/isa/es1688/snd-es1688.ko.gz

But is it loaded? I don't understand this:

# lsmod
Module Size Used by
...
sound 78956 6 opl3,sb_lib,uart401
soundcore 9248 8 sb_lib,sound
...

I'd have a look at the /var/log/syslog. First check if the board is
 recognized by the kernel.

I don't see anything which would obviously be the card.

Then check the lines where the system tries to
start the sound system, see what errors it prints there (just search for
 'sound' or 'ALSA' in syslog).

No mention of ALSA in /var/log/syslog. When I search there for sound I
get a load of greek-to-me:

# less /var/log/syslog | grep sound

Do you know which driver was loaded in 9.0. If so, you could try to load
it manually with modprobe and see what errors you get.

No, unfortunately I don't, but I suppose the above mentioned es1688
should work, right? But I still don't know why ALSA isn't running, or
how to get it to run, or even if I really need it.

Thanks a lot for helping me.

I installed it on the last four systems I've assembled as a test Dennis. I got
various errors about kdecore4 (?) and a few more files, managed to get at
least a bootable system then immediately ftp upgraded to the cooker tree.

Check the signature line below generated by calling /etc/mandrake-release.

You probably did pick a bad mirror. Which one did you use? I've had rotten

Btw, everything is working fine here, barring a few glitches that have already

I have an Imation 256MB USB 2.0 drive, a clevo 400-something laptop(it's
a different brand, but the system identifies itself as a clevo) and
Mandrake 10.0 on it. USB 1.1 drives work perfectly, automount and all,
and I can get the Imation drive working on the COMPAQ 400mhz with USB
1.1 that I have at Uni. But usb2 with usb2 doesn't do anything. It
doesn't even come up with USB view.
My dmesg gives the following:

usb 4-3: new high speed USB device using address 3

My modprobe.conf looks like this:

alias autofs autofs4
alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394
alias eth0 8139too
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-intel8x0  {
/sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; }
install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe usb-ohci; /sbin/modprobe ehci-hcd; /bin/true
remove snd-intel8x0 { /sbin/modprobe -r snd-pcm-oss; } ; /sbin/modprobe -r

And I have to admit that my linux skills have just about been depleted
by finding these two messages based on FAQs out there.

Thanks

[newbie] MDK 10.0 + Multimedia keyboard

2004-07-21 Thread Stephen Kuhn
Hey y'all.
I'm getting dead tired of relearning how to type here; MDK 10.0 surely
isn't treating my keyboard nicely; I can either choose UK, US or US
International - if I choose US, then my right alt key no longer works,
and if I choose US International, I have to hit the ' and then tap the
space bar - which is getting horribly annoying. I've almost gotten to
the point where I don't want to chat in IRC or even do email as it's so
annoying.

No where I've looked can I change this behaviour - no where I've looked
can I specify what KIND of keyboard I have - HELP!

Yes, the iconbox - mine is set to start at bottom right and grow
upwards, so it normally contains 2 icons at startup - kppp and
konsole - and acquires more during the day.

Anyway, check your startup script and make sure you're not starting chbg

There is sound, as loud as I want it, but in half-second bursts, if
you see what I mean. I.e. the song plays, I can listen to it from
start to finish if I'm feeling masochistic, but it's as if some DJ
with a neuro-motor disease was trying to scratch the record from the
back of a pick-up on a bumpy road, ya know?

Is it an ISA card? If so, I had to do some manual work to get the
  drivers loaded the first time.

The card is a sound chip 16 Bit Compaq PremierSound on the
 motherboard (I'm on a Compaq Armada 1750 laptop). I have a printout
 from a German Suse page
 (sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/laptop_daten_compaq_armada-1750.html) which
says that the soundcard is detected as a Generic ESS ES1688 base
soundcard or motherboard and that it is Supported by ALSA Version
0.4.2. ALSA detects the sound chip as a ESS Audio Drive ES1688. The
laptop quick specs say it is a Sound Blaster Pro-compatible with
 16-bit stereo Compaq Premier Sound.

All this to say that I don't really know what an ISA card is :\

The required module seems to be there:

 #find /lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/ -name *1688*
 /lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/sound/isa/es1688
 /lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/sound/isa/es1688/snd-es1688-lib.ko.gz
 /lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/kernel/sound/isa/es1688/snd-es1688.ko.gz

But is it loaded? I don't understand this:

 # lsmod
 Module Size Used by
 ...
 sound 78956 6 opl3,sb_lib,uart401

The above says you are using OSS now. You can't use ALSA until the OSS
modules are removed.

 soundcore 9248 8 sb_lib,sound
 ...

I'd have a look at the /var/log/syslog. First check if the board is
  recognized by the kernel.

I don't see anything which would obviously be the card.

Then check the lines where the system tries to
start the sound system, see what errors it prints there (just
search for 'sound' or 'ALSA' in syslog).

No mention of ALSA in /var/log/syslog. When I search there for
 sound I get a load of greek-to-me:

 # less /var/log/syslog | grep sound

Btw, everything is working fine here, barring a few glitches that have

 Good luck and have fun!

Yes, I had the same kdecore4 errors and the printutils error but could not
get a xserver running. I used a Wisconsin site. I'm trying again with a
French ftp site. Bittorrent was way to slow, 1 to 3 kps. I will see how the

That sounds like a very good lead. How do I know which modules I should
remove to eliminate OSS? From /proc/modules:

autofs4 14656 2 - Live 0xcc91b000
nfsd 173152 8 - Live 0xcc9ae000

I don't see a way to identify which modules are OSS and which are ALSA.
I think the snd-something ones are ALSA, right? So I'm guessing sb_lib,
uart401 and opl3 are OSS. Is this correct? Any others I should also remove?

Depends on the mirror. The one I mentioned is fairly fast but doesn't allow

Have a look at either (or both) of the links below to see how current cooker

It's strange that the torrent was so slow. I had it running in upload only

Since you didn't know where it was we can assume you didn't change

Check your ~/Desktop/Autostart and see if you have anything in there
that might be starting Nautilus.

Also, IIRC XFce4 would launch Nautilus to display its documentation. So,
if you ever looked at the help for anything in XFce4, that may have been
what launched Nautilus. I may be wrong on that, though. I think now it
just uses the browser environment variable for displaying help, which is
what has me confused, but I haven't set it up from scratch for so long

I want to install a platform independent font viewer (Opcion). On their
website ( http://opcion.sourceforge.net/help.htm ) they say:

Execute Opcion Font Viewer
... For Linux users use the command java -jar Opcion_v1.1.1.jar in

When I fire that command in the command line, I get:

bash: java: command not found

I have Java installed and tested. It's there. Does anybody know how to
install/use these kind of applications?

Java is probably not in your path so you'll have to give the full path
to its location; on my machine it's /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01/bin/java. You
could probably set up a link in ~/bin or /usr/bin if you wanted.

I want to write a script that will send a message to a certain email address

have to install and configure either sendmail or postfix. Sounds like a lot
of work for a simple script.

I don't want to run my own mail server (not at the moment). I rely on my isp
for sending and receiving email.

Is there a simple way to do this? Can I somehow tell kmail to do it for me? If
not, can someone point me to some good instructions for configuring postfix
to do what I need without interfering with email to/from my isp, and without
opening up security holes in my system (e.g. an open relay).

Thanks,

check /etc/services

it doesn't go into great detail, but it's a starting point.

Yes, I had the same kdecore4 errors and the printutils error but could
not get a xserver running. I used a Wisconsin site. I'm trying again with
a French ftp site. Bittorrent was way to slow, 1 to 3 kps. I will see
  how the French mirror does.

Depends on the mirror. The one I mentioned is fairly fast but doesn't allow
 rsync connections.

Have a look at either (or both) of the links below to see how current
 cooker mirrors are:

 http://home.skycon.net/~junfan/cookermirrors.php

 http://www.acert.pt/~fribeiro/mirrorwatch/

It's strange that the torrent was so slow. I had it running in upload only
mode for 2 days. Set for 25 kilo-bytes upload limit.

Oh well... the next alpha or a beta will probably be along in a bit anyway.

It does seem funny that I get the print-utils error cause my md5sums all check
out. Can you have a flakey iso if the md5sums are correct?

Sure you can Dennis; I did. I stopped using the alpha disks and started just
plugging whatever system I'm testing into my hub, or use a USB drive, or just
plug my mirror drive in temporarily. Depends when and where.

It's easier that way anyway. Same like installing from the 'Net but a lot
faster 'cause I don't have to be patient with the connection.

It is an Alpha release after all.

Once you're up and at least have a usable system please install the
testzilla-clients so you can add your hardware configuration to the database
at bugzilla. I don't always remember to do it with the systems I test, but
every little bit will help in the long run.

Thanks for the Heads Up Dennis. I was about to download it. I noticed

It's a perfect time for yo uto try it then, and report it as a bug if it

[newbie] Little bit of sig help

2004-07-21 Thread Chris
Actually I just need a bit of help with the last entry. Apparently when
there is a long song title part of it is cut off:

Live - From Virgin Radio UK Meatloaf - You Took The Words Right Out Of My M

However, when the song title isn't picked up the wrap is there:

Live - From Virgin Radio UK Virgin Radio Classic Tracks - The original
classic rock station

Heres the line from my sig:

if [ -p /tmp/xmms-info ] ; then echo Live - From Virgin Radio UK $( grep
Title: /tmp/xmms-info | awk -F': ' '{print $2}' )

If I remember correctly its only a problem with the one title from Meatloaf,
possibly a problem with the originating station?

DHCP is what keeps changing it on you. The default DHCP configuration
updates /etc/resolv.conf with the name server information if it is
included as part of the DHCP information. So, if you want to specify
your own name server, you have to turn it off. I can not check the
exact wording right now, but I believe Peer DNS is what you are looking
for. Turn it off, edit /etc/resolv.conf, and you should be all set.

IANA maintains a listing of the well known port numbers, a short description, and who
registered them at http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers.

NetworkSorcery also maintains a list, with hyperlinks to more detailed descriptions of
services at http://www.networksorcery.com/enp/protocol/ip/ports0.htm

The problem is that services that use relatively arbitrary port numbers (for example,
webmin uses 1 even though it is not registered) will be harder to find out. There
is a command that I've posted here before that will show what processes are using what
ports on your system. Hopefully someone else can post it because it escapes me at the
moment :)

Whoops, forgot my favorite one:

It's searchable and includes a lot of unofficial port usages.

Postfix is easy, you can find all info on
www.postfix.org/documentation.html.

The script-way to send mail is through 'mail'. 'mail' is a program. I
think it is always installed with Mandrake, I never had to look for it.

E.g.

cat textfile_with_message | mail
[EMAIL PROTECTED],[EMAIL PROTECTED] -s Here is the
subject

(all in one line)

Another option is the here-document way, if the contents of the mail is
always the same:

mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] -s Subject @end
This is it.
@end

Everything between the @end directives will be in the body of the
e-mail.

It really is easy as that...
