[newbie] Updating with RPM drake
My installation is straight forward. Aside from updates from the mirror no other software has been installed or modified. For a few months I did not touched my Mandrake box. Now when I attempt to use RPM drake for updates I get messages with the error that the packages have bad signatures. Such as: The following package have bad signatures: kdebase+common_3.2.3._134.8.101mdk i586 rpm: missing signature (Couldn't open file} other packages have the same note that the signature was missing and the file couldn't be opened. [newbie] USB external hard drive
I have tried several times to get Mandrake version 10.1 to recognize my external USB ( Maxtor Diamond Max) hard drive. If I turn it on before or during bootup it seems to freeze the booting process. It is not recognized. Actually listed hardware states it is a unknown device. If I turn it on after booting it has a red pilot light. I have even removed the drive from the case and booting without the drive gives a green pilot light but the device is not recognized in the hardware list. The case does not have any jumpers to change but the hard drive does. Could the problem reside here? The box recognizes my USB mouse and printer automatically. [newbie] Fonts too small to see
Even though my eysight is poor I don't have any trouble with my Microsoft box. But data of the same nature on my Mandrake box is so small I am distressed in trying to read it. For example the type of text I have trouble with is: (Opening Screen) Welcome to Mandrake Linux All About Mandrake Linux Mandrake soft offers a comprehensive range... It is this last line I have problems with. The font is too small . I have a 20 inch LCD monitor so the problem isn't screen size. Is there a solution or am I just stuck? [newbie] Security Update Woes
I have just reinstalled the down load version of 9.2 for the fourth time. In the previous installations all appeared well until I installed the security updates. The initial installations identified correctly my cd rom, floppy, hard disc, etc. Most gratifying was xD card reader was identified as mt/windows and it worked. Opening sequence was file/mnt/windows/dcim/100olymp/*.jpg But when I d/l and installed all of the suggested/listed security updates utter ruin was the result. The xD card reader icon requested a program to read the device . I tried everything on the KDE menu without success. The floppy no longer responded. There was actually a lock attached to the icon. The Kmai was missing from the mail menu. Kppp was also missing from the Network/ Remote Access menu. I did searches for 100olymp and dcim . Nothing was found, as though the two file/directories were removed from the system. Security updates somehow made my system so secure I could no longer use it. Please, what can I do? I want to keep my system current with the necessary updates. Owen Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

When I try to reboot I now get the following message: UFS; Can't find ext3 file system on dev ide 0 (3,6) Mount: error 22 mounting ext 3 flags. Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init = option to Kernel Question do I need to reinstall the whole thing? Im just getting started and have run into this problem. When I receive a email that contains a URL I want to see, Kmail takes me to Konqueror and displays the URL automatically. [newbie] Changing screen resolution
I'm using a A-B switch box between two computers. One is dedicated to WIN2000, the other is dedicated to Mandrake 8.2. The box allows me to utalize the same monitor, keyboard and mouse. Even though the monitor resolution is set the same for both boxes, some of the menue boxes run off the screen when using Mandrake. The situation is so bad that even with the title bars removed the icons for minimize, maximize, close on the top of the screen cannot be seen. The same goes for the bottom where the boxes for, o.k. or cancel are normallyfound. The sides are rendered the same so that the resize or move cannot be accessed. Any suggestions how I can solve this? I don't want to change my resolution from 600 to 800. Six hundred is what I use in Windows, anything smaller I find hard to see. How do you change the default editor to for example emacs? I wanted to post a usenet article from within tin. And I'm not saying that Linux sucks in any way! But I'm just wondering because, without getting into a flame war, I'm surprised how bad the installation of Mandrake is. I got Mandrake because it was supposed to be the most friendly distribution to install and no doubt it's better than RedHat or Debian and for all intents and purpose it's a good installation process. But some of the questions the installer would ask were just confounding to a new user and the method that you select packages were a bit disconcerting. I know that Linux is not for the timid, but there seem to be just little things that could be changed to faciliate the whole "experience." I doubt a first time Linux user would click on Expert, the "psychology" of Linux seems a little wacked but I guess it's not an OS that's intended for the general population. [newbie] mouse initialization
I am sharing a mouse and keyboard between two machines (temporarily). In the past I haven't had problems pulling the cords out and plugging them into either of the two machines. I imagine this is supposed to be a really bad habit, but I'm short of space. Anyway, this last time, when I plugged the ps-2 cable into my linux box, the mouse pointer was frozen on the screen. The system is working normally otherwise. Re: [newbie] Which is the best distribution? aka holy wars
So go ahead, try several distros (there are packages with 4-5 distros for 50US bucks, i believe)... Find out which one is the best _for_you_... Linux Systems Labs ( http://www.lsl.com ) has a good deal on distros. I got Redhat 5.1, SuSe 5.2, Debian 2.0.2, and Slackware 3.5 plus the entire Sunsite Linux archives ( 4 cds! ) for like $14, which included shipping. It's a great deal, I suggest you go there to get you started. When I use the root login, startx works just fine, but when I use my login, I get the above error. As a workaround try: edit /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config and change (or comment out these lines): DisplayManager._0.authorize:true DisplayManager._1.authorize:true to: DisplayManager._0.authorize:false DisplayManager._1.authorize:false I have a feeling this problem is actually with your .xinitrc and .xsession files in your home directory. The important part of those error messages is xinit: No such process - whatever program you were trying to run can't connect to the X server, not because it's refused a connection, but because it's failed to start up properly. Both my .xinitrc and .xsession files simply contain the following: /opt/kde/bin/kde (at least I think they do; I'm not using linux at the moment) Good luck, Owen
[newbie] Problems with X
Well, I finally got X working with my SiS 6326 video card. I had to add: option "sw_cursor" option "no_bitblt" X starts fine, but only displays in 320x200. The hotkeys to change the resolution don't work either. I have a Viewsonic E641 monitor. [newbie] re: probs with x
Thanks everyone who helped me with my prob. X now properly works, except for some small prob. I had to install the latest XFree86 to get everything to jive, except when I did that, 'startx' no longer loaded KDE. I used 'rpm --upgrade --force *.rpm' where *.rpm was all the latest xfree86 files. How can I fix this so 'startx' loads up KDE by default. 01 aka electr01 http://i.am/electr01/ http://www.mp3.com/electr01/ resume @ http://140.232.88.55/job/resume_web.html

I suspect you're compiling a lot of your kernel as modules, and getting a kernel panic when it can't boot. Is that right? You need to have the following things actually built into the kernel, not done as modules: Under Block Devices: Enhanced IDE... support Include IDE-ATA-2 DISK support Under filesystems: Support for ext2 filesystem I've got kernel automounter support compiled in as well - I didn't check if that was really necessary. You might also want to make sure that ELF binary support is hardwired as well, otherwise your kernel _still_ won't work, even after sorting out the filesystems. Cheers, Owen
