[newbie] deleted partition HELP!

2002-01-04 Thread Vic Parsons

Sorry for the outside writing,
I need to restore my partition table,
as it has been erased accidentally.

I have important data on the /home
partition that I cannot lose.

Would anyone know of a good
restoring app that is not too hard
for me to use? I need something fairly
easy, or at least have someone help
me, step-by-steply if its too
hard and all there is.

Thanks to all who help.

[newbie] device /usr busy? SAY WHAT?

2001-06-12 Thread Chubby Vic

Hey group I just got some weird errors
when I went to either shut down or reboot the
server.

It said something like /usr was busy and it
retried to umount again approx 3 or 4 times,
has anyone else had this error and know how
to correct it so on bootup it does not have to
do a fsck of the usr ?

Thanks

No Ijust have regular Mandrake 8.0 with nothing but
ext2 all round.

On Tuesday 12 June 2001 08:05 am, so spoke Michael Leone:
I saw this, when loading VMWware in kernel 2.2.18 (it used one of it's
 SUSE pre-compiled kernels - i.e., NOT a Mandrake kernel).

So, since I have multiple kernels to boot to, I use VMWare in kernel 2.4.5.
This made it compile it's own kernel modules, and I haven't seen that
 problem since.

Are you running VMWare? And on a ResierFS partition, as I am?

On Sunday 20 May 2001 02:06 pm, so spoke Franki:
I don't think the PC100 or PC133 thing is the issue,,,
Unless your CPU needs PC133 (ie it has a 133 or 266 FSB or front side bus),
it will only use 100 anyway, so it doesn't matter what you set it as...

One thing to try, is upgrading your bios to the latest version,, Some
motherboards don't know what to do with a 256mb dimm, or they do it wrong,,
so upgrading your bios is the way to fix it..

Its not that hard to do either...

find out your motherboards brand, model, and revision (if applic)
then go to their web site, and download the new bios for your board...

Make a dos bootable floppy, (with nothing else on it.)
then unzip the file you got from the manufacturer, and copy the files to
 the floppy..

usually the files will be awdflash.exe and a file with the extension .bin

the bin file is the actual bios file...

boot from the floppy, and when you get to a dos prompt, type: awdflash

Then just answer the questions,, it will ask if you want to back up the old
one,, and then it will ask for the filename of the new one, enter that,
(and the extension .bin) and continue,, and it will write the new bios,,
(do not reset the computer or cause a powerdown until it tells you its ok
to you can waste your mainboard if you stop it in the middle of
 writing)

If you did that, you will have a new bios (see the new date on the start
screen), so then go back into your bios, (hit delete on boot and you will
 get it.)
and set the defaults again,, then change whatever is necessary for your
setup, then save and exit,, and you'll be off and running. It may fix your
issues... and it can't hurt anyway,, I do it all the time with all my
 systems.

The instructions above are for Award bios's (if you want to know what type
you have, cold restart you PC and read the start screens.)

AMI and the others are very similiar for updating the bios, and it can
often fix alot of issues that you normally wouldn't have attributed to a
 bios problem.

one last thing you can try... is slowing down your memory to see if it
helps,,, go into bios as described above, and I think its chipset settings
that you want, in there, set you memory for lower performance, (higher
numbers generally mean lower performance.) if that makes no difference, all
you need to do is select setup defaults to change things back again.

 hope this helps

 regards

 Frank

I just recently added an additional 512MB (2x256MB DIMM PC133) for my

 and

my video editing dreams were coming true.

BAMM! Then Linux starts freezing up and so does WindowsME. Couldn't
figure it out then I checked BIOS and realized that it was set to PC100

 default.

I checked on my motherboard for jumpers but this motherboard does these
changes through BIOS. So I changed it and then for a week everytime I
playback one of my videos the system freezes even in LINUX! I went back
to the store where I got the RAM and they told me it was probably a
compatiability issue. I exchanged them for premiums and still get the
crashes but this only happens when playing back any .mpeg or .avi file.
Under WindowsME I am used to this but until recently LINUX never gave me
that trouble nor have I seen it freeze before.

Any help would be appreciated since I have looked everywhere else.

  Thank you

 You can download this program:
 http://reality.sgi.com/cbrady_denver/memtest86/
It is a stand-alone test program -doesn't need Windows OR Linux to run.
Start it up and let it run overnight. If there are problems with the memory

 it should find them.

I don't know whats wrong with Mandrake 8 font installer,

and quit being stupid?

Re: [newbie] zip drives

2001-04-15 Thread Chubby Vic

If you wish to eject it with a software command under
Linux, type eject /mnt/zip or eject /dev/sda4 that is if
your zip drive is on that device, if you want more info
please don't hesitate to ask me.

On Sunday 15 April 2001 09:12 am, so spoke mike hodder:
On my zip drive there's a small, translucent plastic button. When the drive
is accessed the button glows green. I've watched that button glow for a
year. I used windoze and always ejected the cartridge via a software
command. I never thought to press it until I read your suggestion. So, I
give it a try, just to see what happens, and low and behold, the drive
ejects the cartridge whether I umount it first, or not.

I knew as soon as I sent my request for help that it sounded pretty lame. I
knew I'd get some reply about pressing the eject button, something I knew I
 didn't have one of. Well...

Thanks very much from a newly commissioned officer of the brain dead newbie
 division.

I assume I need to umount /mnt/zip before I eject the cartridge? Like not
ejecting a floppy without unmounting the file, first?

How do I eject a cartridge out of a zip drive?

Um... press the eject button? ;-)

Seriously, though, if the eject button isn't working, then probably you
need to unmount it first. I know my cdrom works that way. I insert a cd,
then mount the drive. Once I am done with it, I need to unmount the drive
before I can eject the cd.

Re: Griff, you're fired Re: [newbie] stupid ftp server broken

2001-04-09 Thread Chubby Vic

Well, sometime last summer, I had to boot Allen because he was lazy
and did not want to get things done when I asked him to,
then I found out that he was spamming from my server,
I found a huge list of e mail addresses on a zip disk
on my desk in here that he left out one day,
I noticed a whole buttload of flames from pooped-off people
in my inbox, then I got curious as to what was on the
zip disk he left, sure enough, the same addresses
that flamed my box were on the zip disk,
then to top it off, he posted a bunch of untrue stuff
about me on another couple of lists, god it was a mess.

Then Rex, I told him what to post and he did not ask anything
about "off the record" he just assumed that because I
was grumbling about my machine that it was what I wanted
posted and took it as dictation, so I kicked him.

Now Griffin goes and does the same thing even *after*
I specifically asked him to not print what I say until
I say the words "on record" and then after I say
"off record" he is not to take anything I say as
dictation until I say "on record" again,
plus he spammed a few people using my computer.

-long sigh---

I can't seem to find anyone I can trust to do my e mails
while I'm away.

While they will pile up, I can do them all myself,
but I will almost never seem to get back to anyone
or get anything done on here.

So thats about once this year and twice last year.

Those who have been quoted as saying "good help is hard to find"
were not kidding.

running inetd and in.ftpd produces same result,

I'm having some problems playing mp3's in LM
7.2. For some reason, only a minute or so will play before the sound
stops, although the mp3 player says the song is still playing. Once it
reaches the end of the mp3, it starts playin the next one fine, but only for
another minute. I've checked the config of my soundcard (SoundBlaster
PCI128) against that used in windows 2000 (I have to dual boot since I'm at uni,
and some of the programs I need are only available in windows - sorry!) and they
match.

The sound from DVD's and CD's is fine, as is the
sound from sound effects, so i'm not sure what happens when i play mp3's.
Oh, and this happens no matter which mp3 player i use. My machine is a p3

solve my problems in 7.2 for xmms, and some games...

 more features.

Maybe I'm getting old (though I've always been a bit
misanthropic;-), but when it comes to communication, I prefer a
text-based deal. I don't chat much, but I've tried some of the
gui apps, some of the avatar systems on the Web. All in all, I
 prefer ytalk.

But I've not taken the time to figure out why talk isn't
cooperative either in lm7.2 or in RH 6.0. It wouldn't be so bad
if talk actually worked -- primitive as it is -- but I, for one,
haven't figured out why it just sits times out even when set up

[newbie] My evaluation of New Traktopel Beta Mandrake 8

2001-03-08 Thread Vic

Hello list.

Upon installing the new Beta Mandrake Traktopel 8
release on a system using an AMD K6-400 cpu,
192Mb system ram, S3 Virge video card, 10Gb Quantum harddrive UDMA 33,
with VIA chipset, AWE64 Soundblaster ISA card, a zip250
using the zip zoom card (aic7xxx), an old unix BTC cdrom,
and lastly a Plextor 8/4/32A Cd recorder.

I found the installation went ok in expert mode, one little hang up on
setting up networking, it would not let you click on yes or no,
BUT, you could bypass this by going on to the next step,
then when it cama back, you could just click on uhh, skip or
something like that, and do it later after installation finished.

I really liked the option when you booted into expert mode,
it would let you select another cdrom device to go to,
which I did, my faster Plextor drive, altho I had to boot
with the slower drive, but I could just switch drives when
it asked me that.

I had to downgrade sendmail, and tweak apache,
and kde2's user agent with Konqueror's user agent
is still broken broken broken busted broken busted busted
broken...BUT other than that, it still was a *very* useable
system and I think I might keep it for awhile until the
stable release comes up.

Good job Mandrake.
Pretty dang good for a beta,
if the beta was that decent, the
stable release ought to kick butt.

2001-02-13 Thread Vic

Oh gee THAT was HELPFUL -- NOTTT!!!

How about giving the guy some USEFUL info

Such as---

To change directories, type cd /bin
and that will place you in the directory /bin
one down from root level.

To go to the directory /usr type cd /usr
and you will be in it.

Then if you want to be in /usr/local you can
do it two ways:

type cd local
or type cd /usr/local

Note that the first one is assuming you
are already inside the /usr directory.

And from anyplace on the filesystem to
simply go back home, type

cd

and whatever user you are logged in as,
you will go to that home directory such as
/home/user1

(assuming it is a valid directory and user on the system)

[newbie] My review of KDE2.1 beta 2

2001-02-11 Thread Vic

Hello from the States.

I would like to offer my review for kde2.1beta 2

I for the most part liked all the new features, altho
some of them were broken, such as the blank kcontrol
thing, rendering it useless in root account.

I also liked the new config menu for Konqueror
but the user agent editor was broken would not
save the settings that you put in.

I lost the theme from Kde2 where the close X box was on the
left, where I wanted it, and in the beta2 I could not
find this theme anymore all the themes were with
the close box on the right which I did not want,
just preference, not crippling by any means, but
a strong preference.

The theme manager altho functional, was slightly
impaired due to the fact that you cannot add any
themes to it, nor find the original theme that
kde2 had by default.

It did sort of fix the Konq crashing, but the knotifeir
was broken, kept crashing causing the crash
notifiyer to keep coming up and be irritating.

Over all kde2.1beta2 was a nice update of features,
but at this time I do not feel it is for me to stick with
this and I went back to kde2 original.

I look forward to other's reviews of this beta
and to hear from them about the next review,
I might hold off on updating to any betas until
I hear from other people first, as I should not
have messed with my main machine, but I still
thank Chris for making them into rpm form
and I thank KDE for trying.

Thanks

Re: [newbie] AWE 64 ISA PNP

2001-02-11 Thread Vic

My most sincere congrats in getting sound to work
in suse!

I have never been able to do it, I thought there was no
sound in that dist.

My hat is off to you.

In Mandrake, one must run an app called sndconfig
if you cannot find it on your system, go to

http://rpmfind.net and type sndconfig into the blank
search space and press your Enter key or Return
key or click on Search button on that web page
and it should come up with some rpm files
to sndconfig.

Then rpm -ivh sndconfig.rpm (that file may have a longer name)
and it should install, then switch your machine into
runlever 3 by either clicking shutdown console mode
or from a virtual terminal or xterm or konsole
type telinit 3 and it should go into text only mode,
then log in as the root user and type sndconfig
and it should begin setting up your card, just follow
its lead.

Hope this helps.

To create a mount point all one must do is create a directory that

Then they can do a mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom

assuming that your CD rom is on device hdb.

I hope this helps, if not please question me again and I shall

On Sunday 04 February 2001 11:35 am, so spoke nlilly:

In order to use a cdrom burner you have to use scsi emulation for that
device. Here's how to do it:
Determine what device your burner actually is. listing the /dev
directory should tell you. I have two drives with my burner as the
 second drive...

  lrwxrwxrwx1 root root3 Jan 7 08:30 /dev/cdrom
  - hdc
  lrwxrwxrwx1 root root3 Jan 7 08:30 /dev/cdrom2
  - hdd
  ...//...
  brw---1 nlilly cdrom 22, 0 Sep 27 06:31 /dev/hdc
  brw---1 nlilly cdrom 22, 64 Sep 27 06:31 /dev/hdd

   1. Enter into your lilo.conf at the end of the vmlinuz entry
  append="hdd=ide-scsi"
   2. Reboot.
   3. After rebooting, issue the following command as root.
  modprobe ide-scsi

The entry in lilo preps the system to look for your burner and treat it
as a scsi device. The second installs the emulation module into the
kernel. This will also report the identity of the ide drive as it
 progresses.

From this point on the burner will be linked to /dev/scd0 as opposed to
hdd and your fstab will look something akin to the following:[

  nlilly@a13c058 nlilly]$ less /etc/fstab
  /dev/hda1 / ext2 defaults 1 1
  none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
  /dev/hda7 /home ext2 defaults 1 2
  /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660
  user,exec,dev,suid,rw,fs=iso9660 0 0
  /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660
  user,exec,dev,suid,rw,fs=iso9660 0 0
  /mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount
  user,exec,dev,suid,rw,fs=vfat 0 0
  none /proc proc defaults 0 0
  /dev/hda6 /usr ext2 defaults 1 2
  /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

From this point on the available burning utilities (X-cdroast,
e-roaster, cdrecord, etc.) Will see the drive and be able to use it.

How can I make xcdroast comply?

 Good luck!

If you're talking about using Lpr it will indeed. At this point in Cups'
developement, as far as Canons are concerned at least, Lpr is still the
method of choice. At least for those who wish to retain more then 70% of
the sanity they were born with while they're still under the age of 80!

Please don't get me wrong. I think Cups is a good thing...as long as
you're not using, or trying to use a Canon printer. Where HP is concerned
you can't beat Cups with a stick. Not even a pair of sticks. Drum sticks
that is...and you know who you are!

Anyway, I firgure it this way. Those of us that are hell bent on sticking
with our Canon printers are just going to have to stick with using Lpr
until Mandrake version 8.1 is in full release. That would be at least by
Summer 2002 easy. By then Cups should be a killer printer support
platform. ACtually I think Canon should have stuck with making Cameras and
never gotten into the printer market. And I should have my head examinded
 for friggin buying one.

After this it will be HP for me...or an Epson. Now THOSE are printers.

O, and by the way. You can very easily and quickly install a printer using
Linuxconf to print with Lpr. Only thing is you have to make sure that
Cups, Qtcups, Kups and anything else C,K-ups in it is totally uninstalled
from the system before you will be able to install and use a printer with
LPR. That just da way it is.

   rpm -qa | grep cups

Issue the above command in a terminal to see if you have Cups of any kind
installed on the system. This will catch qtcups as well. then issue this
command to uninstall those packages from the system.

rpm -e -force package-name *use the -force argument only if
   necessary

*where package-name is place
the name of the package listed
 from the rpm query.

*package name MUST entered exactly
as it appears in the output

   rpm -qa |grep Kups

Do everything for Kups packages that you did for Cups packages. The
procedure is the same. Then Open Linuxconf-Miscellaneous
 services-Printer-Add/Edit printers-Add.

You will be prompted to create a printer when you do you will then define
that printers properties. When you click on that printers name in the
little box you can further define that printer. There is a panel with 3
tabs across the top. On the first tab you define the max file size. On the
second tab you choose the device:

Lp0 is the typical and default choice. 3 and last tab is where you choose
the printers filters, resolution, paper size, and quality. The most
important of these though is the filter. Choose the wrong filter and you
 won't see your printer printing...anything!

That's really all there is to setting up print services using Lpr and

[newbie] After running kups and giving it a good sound spanking--

2001-01-28 Thread Vic

Well, after giving the printer a good sound spanking
and more importantly running Kups, must have been
what needed to be done, not sure why it
needed reconfigging after all this upgrading
to the beta, sometimes you just have to spank it I guess.

Weird.

I think all is working for now, I hope.

Note to all who have an old HP DeskJet, don't ever forget
to run your Kups configuration thing after you do the
upgrade or your printer settings will go whacko.

plug in the ethernet I have link but when I show the interfaces it never
shows up...it shows eth0, eth0:192 and lo (loopback). Here is my question,
how can I set my system up to recognize the second card. By the way it's a
D-Link card. In /etc/sysconfig/hwconf it only shows the one ethernet card

Kups did stop the halfie page printing,
the words did not run off of the page,
they actually did the opposite,
it would print half the page and then
eject that page and finnish it on another

Hope it works.

Hang on, I said it was quick ..._and dirty_ 'fix'. Renaming knotify
to disable it, is just to give ya enough time/sanity to fix the real
problem Vic. Out'a German stubborness, and a dx'd for 12 years now brain
disease, I rode those kind'a problems out for a few weeks before I
finally did a wipe/reinstall and fixed it. Only problem with a reinstall
is I lost the opportunity to figure out where _I_ screwd it to begin
 with.  Which sort'a kind'a means I'll prob'ly do it again ;

BTW, AFAIK, knotify is mainly responsible for system notifications
(sounds). I don't know what else it might affect tho.

 Vic,

Here's the help file that I used:

If you want to upgrade KDE 2 to KDE2 Beta 2, download the files from the
 following link:

 http://atik.ciril.fr/pub/linux//mandrake-devel/unsupported/i586/kde2.1Beta2

 Step 1.
Log on as root and download the kde2.1Beta2 rpms. Copy the rpms to a
new folder i.e. kdebeta and save the folder in your root directory.

 Step 2.
Log out of X and log on in "console mode"

 Step 3.
Type in: cd Type in: rpm -Uvh --test *.rpm
If everything goes well, remove the -- test. The verbose command will
 show if something is missing.
If you are missing certain rpm files or libraries, navigate back to that
ftp site and download the files.

 Step 4.
 Type in: rpm --rebuilddb
Give this some time and above all do not interrupt it.

 Step 5.
 Type in: update-menus -v
Give this time. D o not interrupt it.
 Reboot you computer. That's it.

I wish I could learn more languages, all I can speak

[newbie] Feature suggestion

2001-01-20 Thread Vic

Hello

I think it would be nice to have a feature
put into a future mandrake version,
capable of being disabled of course,
that would, when rpm or an app cood not find
a library, it would do a search the entire filesystem
until it found one that would make the app work,
or if it were not on the system it would then
access the net and search for it automatically,
asking the user if when it found it, if it was the
right one, if the user did not know it would then
try downloading and installing several different
oens until it worked, and if desired, a go-along-with
me type tutorial could also be ran at the time to
teach newer users about the internal processes
of a linux system, this feature and its subfeatures
could all be disabled at the user's request if they
already knew what they were doing in the case
that it would be useless to them.

What about that?

 2) E has some great features, like the pager, desktop dragging, etc.
