[newbie] VICE / X64 (to Paul RodrÃguez)
Hi Paul, sorry for this late reply.. Can't find your email-addy, so i send this to this list for all the world to see :) Joystick setup in the vice is very easy. For the unix/linux versions, just hold the _right_ mouse-button (the left pops up a load-menu), choose joystick setup from the popup-menu, and choose your favourite option. Numpad is great if you don't have a joystick, you use the numpad keys for an 8-directional joystick, with left ctrl for fire. I still use the c64, but mainly the real thing, emulators only when absolutely neccesarry :) .. It a great machine really :) .. Easy to program as well, and fun to try to get it to do things that's impossible on an 1mhz machine with 64k of memory, and see it work :) . The c64 scene is still alive! Btw, check out sta.c64.org, there you can find instructions for building (or ordering cheap) a X1541-series cable, which allows you to transfer your c64 disks to and from the pc! :) (make sure to get the version that works under linux). Re: [newbie] LM 7.2 and Xfree and CD-RW
Do you have scsi-emulation enabled ? Pass the option hdx=ide-scsi to the kernel at boot (through lilo or grub), where x is the "hd" number (a = first primary, b = first secondary, c = second primary etc.) Try "cdrecord -scanbus" to see if the recorder is recognized. Gerry
Re: [newbie] Time Space
Then there are the new subscribers that don't have the original on disc or those of us who don't want to or wouldn't be practical to search through the list to find the original in the over 7000 messages currently in newbie@linux-mandrake. All attempts to standardize this list meet with profuse resistance, where it is not futile, as evidenced by the fact that it never gets implimented. But thank you for your thoughts and you have a real nice day. I didn't say that you shouldn't include ANY of the message you replied to, but; only include the _relevant_ part. No searching for old messages needed. Anyway, if not all does this, a dew can still help.. snipped to save Gerry's hdd Heh :) My hd is 20 gb, but thanx anyway :) Reading the same stuff over and over again, and search for the part that is new, is a bit annoying. And with my slow internet-line it's even more annoying.. Gerry
[newbie] Time Space
When most of you ppl reply to something, you include all of the message you replied to, which in its turn may include messages it's replied to, etc. Sometimes the interesting part in the original message are just one line, while the whole msg might be 100 lines.. So, this means that of the 500k i get in the mailbox a day from these lists (newbie and expert), 90% is stuff i've already read, that i don't need to read again, and that's not relevant to the reply at all. My point is, could you please try to just include the part of the message you're actually replying to ? This will save time and space both when downloading the messages from the mailserver (for those who doesn't have dsl, cable, fiber-optic etc. connections), and also when reading the message, so that we don't have to skip through a whole lot of uninteresting text. Re: [newbie] xmess
Has anybody had any luck using (non-windows) emulators such as xmess (included on LM 7.2) to work? I was excited to play some of my old Commador64 and atari games, but don't really know how to get started. For Commodore 64 you should use The VICE, which gives 99,99% accurate emulation.. The VICE is a system-independent emulator system that also emulates Vic20, C128, PET and CBM-II :) You can get it at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dsladic/vice/vice.html After installing it, the c64-part is called "x64". Just run that one, and you're off :) .. btw, you need to have some disk images as well if you want to play anything.. www.c64.com has thousands of c64-games just waiting to be downloaded! I am debating to get a usb CDRW or get the IDE interior drive. I have two questions: 1. How do I get my LM7.2 system to recognize the USB Burner 2. Any advice on which is the better buy...interior or exterior? I don't think cd-writing on usb is a terribly good idea.. Could be wrong though :) 3. What are the speeds 4x4x6...vs8x4x32, etc relative toI am having trouble understanding how to judge relative speedis a 4x4x6 fast enough ? The first number is write-speed (cd-r), the second is rewrite-speed (cd-rw), the third is read speed. 1x is the "normal" cd-speed, which is about 300 kps, or 74 min to burn 74 min of music/650 mb data. Mulitply the speed by those numbers. Ie. 4x4x6 means 1200 kps for both writing modes, which means about 18 min to burn a full cd. Reading would be at 1800 kps. Keep in mind that your system must be able to feed the writer with data at that speed (normally not a problem, but stranger things have happened), unless it has burn-proof technology (pause writing on buffer underruns). I tried putting it in both XF86Config and XF86Config-4 (using Option). I even tried setting keymappings with keycodes, but alt-gr still thinks it's alt.. Thanks for any help! Gerry

You never said what you inteneded to do with the Linux software. I assume you want to create a partition on your Windows 98 drive to make room for a Linux install. I did this myself. Yes, I sweated it for a bit but it all came out okay. I use a floppy to boot into Linux instead of using LILO to dual-boot. If your entire hard disk is currently in use for Windows 98 then need to creat a partition for Linux. I used a program, which eludes me, that did this. I did the following: 1. Deleted my Windows 98 swap file. 2. Ran Windows scandisk and defrag. 3. Ran the DOS utility to create a 500MB partition 4. Boot back in to Windows 98 and re-enabled my swap file. 5. Re: [newbie] How daunting is a kernel upgrade?
I would say that as long as you have a good boot disk and/or have a copy of the old kernel on the hard disk that you should go ahead and crank yourself a new kernel. I was also a little intimidated my first couple tries. After all I thought to myself, I don't want to have to re-install the whole dang operating system if I can' boot anymore ! The "toughest" part of the whole thing was running configure to set up what options you want rolled in to the kernel. And, is it better to make it part of the kernel itself or make it a loadable module? Practice makes perfect. Or, in my case, competent I think. On Thu, 02 Sep 1999, you wrote: Hi all- There's been lots of discussion here about kernel upgrades, and it seems to be a pretty daunting task to me, as a relatively new linux user but a pretty confident and competent computer user in general. My case is that I'm running Mandrake 6.0 and would like to upgrade the kernel to get rid of some of those mount/unmount errors that have been described here already. Is the best upgrade for me the one at cooker (kernel-2.2.11-2mdk.src.rpm), as opposed to the multitude of files I find at kernel.org? Is it preferable for me to stick to a Mandrake release of any given kernel? I guess what I'm looking for is a slightly more hands-on howto (I have read the kernel howtos, and what keeps me from simply following the directions is that, knowing how crucial the kernel is, I just don't want to botch it), and at this point, there seem to be an awful lot of starting places (cooker, kernel.org, the new cassini test, and so on). Those of you who are familiar with this, can you offer a little guidance? I don't need hand-holding so much as just an indication that if I, for example, start with the cooker kernel, I'll be on the right track. Thanks much- - alan / note my new email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] /

Re: [newbie] need to set up simple network
Jim, you'll be needing Samba. Check out their web site at http://www.samba.org. You can install it via an RPM, or tar file. Using an RPM *should* set everything up for you. I *think* it will also put the two daemons in your inetd.conf but am not sure. You can then use "smbclient" to connect to all the PC's. I just bought and EXCELLENT book yesterday called "Teach Yourself Samba in 24 Hours" bys Sam's. I've already read the whole thing and am starting through it again. Jim Snyder wrote: Hi I need to connect my 2 Mandrake Linux 6.0 machines to a Windows 95/98 network. Is there a simple way to do this? Many thanks in advance. Jim
Re: [newbie] GUI for RPM installs ?
You might be thinking og Kpackage for KDE. It is a *very* nice RPM front end. Kpackage should already be installed. Just look off of your menu bar in System I think. Re: [newbie] booting to GUI
I would be interested to know the answer. I believe that you updated LILO with the Mandrake Update utility like I did ? I did the same thing to both my home and office PC. :-) Stephan Rex wrote: Hi all,I updated some files yesterday, and now linux only boots to the command line login prompt and not the KDE login. Re: [newbie] Saving Window Positions
Have your heard about the new partion utility from Mandrake called "DiskDrake" ? Take a look at it at this location: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/diskdrake Traci Collins wrote: Kenton Riley wrote: Hi! I am new to Mandrake, and only slightly more experienced with gnome. Is there a way to configure gnome under mandrake so that my apps will remember where I put them? I know I can save a workspace but I don't think that is what I want. I don't want these apps to begin execution when I login to my account, which is what I think would happen if I saved the workspace when I logged off the account. All I want them to do is remember where I put them and always open to that location no matter when I launch them. Is that possible? If so, can you point me toward a faq where I can learn how to do it? Thanks. -- Traci Collins, MA Professor of Computer Education Colorado Mountain College http://www.rof.net/wp/tcollins/traci.html

Re: [newbie] Re: Kmidi to work when logged in as user...
Karen, At the command line "su" (substitute user) [in this case you need to become rootuser to change the permission of /dev/midi*, so you will need to enter the root's password] and then type ls -al /dev/midi* (the "*" is there, because, at least on my system there are 4 separate files, /dev/midi00, /dev/midi01,... look at the letters/permissions that start the lines) owner group other(hoped that lined up ok) probably something like ... crw-rw-r-- you and Charles want _a_ll users to be able to write /dev/midi* (want that second "-" from the end to turn into a "w") so this is what you probably want to type chmod -v a+w /dev/midi* (the -v option above gives you "verbose" output) Repeating the ls -al /dev/midi* command will also show the changes. Now quickly, before you for forget, type "exit" or use "Ctrl+D" to exit from root user back to "yourself." Axalon was brief, but to the point, in his assistance. In the future, if given a clue like that you can use "apropos" and "man" (and sometimes "info") to gather background, and often sufficient, information to solve your problem. type "apropos permission" (in fact, you can get away with typing "apropos perm") and then type "man chmod" [use spacebar to go to the next screen and q to quit.] You may want to browse "man man" as well. (man refers to "manual" as in "instructions") If apropos doesn't work, then, as root, again, type "makewhatis" (to get a brief idea about what's happening, you can type "man whatis"]. Don't forget to use "exit" or C-d (control-d), to leave rootuser, after you're done." [btw (by the way), I really wish you'd let me be the judge of who's dumb, stupid, uninformed, miseducated, uneducated, turtle-brained, slug-headed,... (and who's not)g.] Hope that helps. gerry Karen R wrote: Axalon wrote: Fix the permissions on /dev/midi* and it should be ok On 5 Jul 1999, Charles Sprague wrote: Hello: Can anyone here tell me how to get the Kmidi program in KDE to work while logged in as a user, not root? Re: [newbie] giving up
You never said how much RAM you have. If you have just 32MB of memory, in my humble opinion, that is too little for KDE/Netscape. Jimmy Garcia wrote: I've spent a week, unsuccessfully, trying to get Linux-Mandrake 6.0 to work properly. After getting through the install procedure, which went by with no real difficulty, I started Linux and was amazed at how slow it was. It kept accessing my hard drive for almost every little thing I did. I gave it a 3 Gig ext2 partition and a 200MB swap file partition from my 10Gig IBM 7200RPM ide hard drive. All my hardware is supposed to be compatible with it (except for my SB Live). It took like 3 minutes for Netscape to load, it took 3 minutes for a desktop theme to apply, and there was obviously something wrong with it. I tried to shut it down, but then it hung while "preparing a new session." When I rebooted, there were errors on my hard drive and I had to 'run fsck manually'. I did, and when I started it again, some programs wouldn't work like, Netcfg. Some Icons turned black in KDE and I couldn't even click on them. I had the same shutdown problem and decided to re-install it.The same things happened to me. I was told that I have to upgrade some kernal or something. But, I can't even load Linux without having to go through that lengthy fsck procedure at startup. I guess I just stick to windows :( For those Linux experts out there, someone should come up with a site or book that'll help people migrate from Windows to Linux.Just a suggestion. Thanks everyone! Re: [newbie] How to change the resolution of X-windows?
John l.yn wrote: Hi: I have two question below: 1. I want to change the resolution of X-windows from 16 color to 24 bit color.Help say that using 'alt'-'ctrl'-'+', but it doesnt work. 8, 16, 24, or 32 bits per pixel (bpp) is the "color depth," not the -resolution-. The default color depth was chosen when you setup X using Xconfigurator, XF86Setup, or whatever. Assuming you have sufficient video memory for your screen size, use startx -- -bpp 24 to have Xwindow start with "24 bit" color. ** Color depth cannot be changed without exiting to the command line. ** 2. The desktop is too big about 4 times than my screen of monitor. Why? I have to move my mouse all around in order to find some thing on the screen. This is dependent on screen resolution, e.g. 640x480, or 800x600, or 1024x768(?), or You chose the allowable resolutions when you setup X using Xconfigurator, XF86Setup, or The highest resolution is the only one that will show the full screen. That is, if I setup X so that at 16bpp I can have 800x600 or 640x480, I'll have to pan around (using the pointer/mouse as you describe), while 800x600 will show the "entire desktop." The resolution that comes up is the one listed first in /etc/X11/Xconfig (I think that's the file Mandrake looks to when you run startx). You can view the file by running less /etc/X11/Xconfig from the ocmmand line. Here's what a part of mine looks like. -=-=- Section "Screen" Driver "SVGA" Device "My Video Card" Monitor "My Monitor" DefaultColorDepth 16 BlankTime 0 SuspendTime 0 OffTime 0 SubSection "Display" Depth8 Modes"1024x768" "800x600" Virtual 1024 768 ViewPort 0 0 EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth15 Modes"1024x768" "800x600" EndSubSection -=-=- The first resolution listed (as Modes) in the -- SubSection "Display" -- is the resolution that you see when Xwindow starts. If there are other resolutions listed on the line they can be achieved using the Ctl+Alt++(numberpad) that you mentioned. Thanks! John l.yn Hope that helps. Gerry

Usually this is caused by a process running that requires the mount, most often (imho) it is bash because someone is logged and is sitting in a directory on the mounted device. Try "cd /", "umount /mnt/{whatever}" hih nick@nexnix Ken I had this type of problem and then on one of the newsgroups someone mentioned the "fuser" command. man fuser may shed some light. Here is what I got after I started listening to an audio cd with the kscd application. (this is run from an xterm) --- [onion@localhost onion]$ /usr/sbin/fuser -v /dev/cdrom USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/cdrom onion 900 f kscd [onion@localhost onion]$ --- The complete pathname for fuser was used since /usr/sbin is not in the "average" user's (onion, in this case) path. Having a musical cd-rom is not likely to be the cause of the problem you're describing, but I think the "fuser -v " will be useful to identify who/what's using the particular device/file you're trying to "umount". [newbie] RealPlayer 5.0 setup
I've got Mandrake 5.3 running pretty smoothly on a K2-166MHz with 64mb RAM, 6.4gb hdd, and a Matrox Mystique PCI card. kppp is working as is most of Netscape But RVPlayer 5.0 is not working quite the way I'd hoped. I followed directions in a "How to Use Linux Book," by Bill Ball, and although I think the book does a good job in a lot of places, the rvplayer install didn't work for me. I check the directions a couple of times and I still get error msgs on the order of "a plugin for the mime type audio/x-wav was not found" when I visit "www.hampsterdance.com" or a quick "false-load" of a recording when I click on http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/atc/19990416.atc.04.ram which is located on http://www.npr.org/programs/atc/archives/1999/current.html -=-= Sound is setup pretty well on KDE. I can get sound effects when I move from desktop to desktop, or if I close a window, The Kmedia program worked pretty well, also. Is there a way to set that up. I got Plugger 3.0 (after seeing it mentioned in a DejaNews msg), but was only able to set it up for root, not a regular user. It will take care of the *.wav files and plays them, but I'd rather not go around as "root" to hear "wav" files. I'd very much like to be able to grab/play npr radio programs and other rvplayer .ram, .rm,... files. Help would be appreciated. Thanks gerry, York, PA
