[newbie] Installing Mandrake 8.1

2002-01-19 Thread gerry

On a machine on which I have been able to install Suse 6.4 and Mandrake
7.1 I get the following problem when trying to install Mandrake 8.1:

Mounting /dev/ram3 on /tmp/stage2 as type ext2
Mount failed: invalid argument

Or

(4) VFS: Can't find ext2 filesystem on dev ram disk (1,3).

Any thoughts?

Thanks

[newbie] VICE / X64 (to Paul Rodríguez)

2001-03-16 Thread Gerry

Hi Paul, sorry for this late reply.. Can't find your email-addy, so i send
this to this list for all the world to see :)

Joystick setup in the vice is very easy. For the unix/linux versions, just
hold the _right_ mouse-button (the left pops up a load-menu), choose joystick
setup from the popup-menu, and choose your favourite option. Numpad is great
if you don't have a joystick, you use the numpad keys for an 8-directional
joystick, with left ctrl for fire.

I still use the c64, but mainly the real thing, emulators only when
absolutely neccesarry :) .. It a great machine really :) .. Easy to program
as well, and fun to try to get it to do things that's impossible on an 1mhz
machine with 64k of memory, and see it work :) . The c64 scene is still alive!

Btw, check out sta.c64.org, there you can find instructions for building (or
ordering cheap) a X1541-series cable, which allows you to transfer your c64
disks to and from the pc! :) (make sure to get the version that works under
linux).

Do you have scsi-emulation enabled ? Pass the option hdx=ide-scsi to the
kernel at boot (through lilo or grub), where x is the "hd" number (a = first
primary, b = first secondary, c = second primary etc.)

Try "cdrecord -scanbus" to see if the recorder is recognized.

Then there are the new subscribers that don't have the original on disc or
those of us who don't want to or wouldn't be practical to search through
the list to find the original in the over 7000 messages currently in

profuse resistance, where it is not futile, as evidenced by the fact that
it never gets implimented. But thank you for your thoughts and you have a
 real nice day.

I didn't say that you shouldn't include ANY of the message you replied to,
but; only include the _relevant_ part. No searching for old messages needed.

Anyway, if not all does this, a dew can still help..

 snipped to save Gerry's hdd

Heh :) My hd is 20 gb, but thanx anyway :)

Reading the same stuff over and over again, and search for the part that is
new, is a bit annoying. And with my slow internet-line it's even more
annoying..

[newbie] Time Space

2001-03-12 Thread Gerry

When most of you ppl reply to something, you include all of the message you
replied to, which in its turn may include messages it's replied to, etc.
Sometimes the interesting part in the original message are just one line,
while the whole msg might be 100 lines.. So, this means that of the 500k i
get in the mailbox a day from these lists (newbie and expert), 90% is stuff
i've already read, that i don't need to read again, and that's not relevant
to the reply at all. My point is, could you please try to just include the
part of the message you're actually replying to ?

This will save time and space both when downloading the messages from the
mailserver (for those who doesn't have dsl, cable, fiber-optic etc.
connections), and also when reading the message, so that we don't have to
skip through a whole lot of uninteresting text.

Re: [newbie] xmess

2001-03-09 Thread Gerry

Has anybody had any luck using (non-windows) emulators
such as xmess (included on LM 7.2) to work? I was
excited to play some of my old Commador64 and atari
games, but don't really know how to get started.

For Commodore 64 you should use The VICE, which gives 99,99% accurate
emulation.. The VICE is a system-independent emulator system that also
emulates Vic20, C128, PET and CBM-II :)

You can get it at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dsladic/vice/vice.html

After installing it, the c64-part is called "x64". Just run that one, and
you're off :) .. btw, you need to have some disk images as well if you want
to play anything.. www.c64.com has thousands of c64-games just waiting to be
downloaded!

(i really love that old machine :)

Seems you need to make a symlink to the 2.2.18-dir..

cd to the parent dir of "linux-2.2.18", and type:

That will create a symlink named linux that point to linux-2.2.18.

If you hold down the ALT key you can drag the window around no matter where
in the window the cursor is (assuming you use kde).

Btw, if your monitor/gfx-card is able to show higher resolutions than 800x600
you probably got some settings wrong somewhere.. Try running mandrake's
x-setup again and select "show all modes" (on my pc it only showed up to
1024x768, but 1280x1024 worked fine), or run xf86config and enter the
resolutions manually.

 questions:
   1. How do I get my LM7.2 system to recognize the USB Burner
   2. Any advice on which is the better buy...interior or exterior?

I don't think cd-writing on usb is a terribly good idea.. Could be wrong
though :)

   3. What are the speeds 4x4x6...vs8x4x32, etc relative toI am
 having trouble
understanding how to judge relative speedis a 4x4x6 fast enough ?

The first number is write-speed (cd-r), the second is rewrite-speed (cd-rw),
the third is read speed. 1x is the "normal" cd-speed, which is about 300 kps,
or 74 min to burn 74 min of music/650 mb data. Mulitply the speed by those
numbers. Ie. 4x4x6 means 1200 kps for both writing modes, which means about
18 min to burn a full cd. Reading would be at 1800 kps.

Keep in mind that your system must be able to feed the writer with data at
that speed (normally not a problem, but stranger things have happened),
unless it has burn-proof technology (pause writing on buffer underruns).

[newbie] difficulty accessing files from one server to another

I have two servers (A and B), one whose role is a file server (B). It has
the /home filesystem. The other server (A) mounts the /home directory from

I'm having problems with security when trying to access these files from A.
When I am root, and do a

ls /home/gerry -l

command, I get a lot of permissions denied. The other thing is I have
Apache running on A. I have set up a public_html directory in my home
directory. I used to be able to access these files via the web server, but
now I always get "permission denied" errors.

Here is what "mount" shows:
dataserver:/home on /home type nfs
(rw,rsize=1024,wsize=1024,hard,intr,addr=192.168.0.3)

One other thing: when I shutdown or restart A, and it attempts to unmount
/home, I get a
"Cannot MOUNTPROG RPC: RPC: Program not registered"

How can I get around this?

Setup:
1. both servers have the same passwd, shadow, group, gshadow files.
2. the mount command in fstab is
3. the 'other' attribute on all files and directories in the public_html
folder is set to read-only.

You can manually start and stop Samba by going to: /etc/rc.d/init/d and

okay. I use a floppy to boot into Linux instead of using LILO to dual-boot.

If your entire hard disk is currently in use for Windows 98 then need to creat a
partition for Linux. I used a program, which eludes me, that did this. I did
the following:

1. Deleted my Windows 98 swap file.
2. Ran Windows scandisk and defrag.
3. Ran the DOS utility to create a 500MB partition
4. Boot back in to Windows 98 and re-enabled my swap file.
5. Popped in the Linux CD and ran the install on to my new partition

Bingo!

I'm rather partial to MySQL, but only because it seemed easier to deal with

Some of the decision will depend on what sorts of things you need to do

  handles those normally.

[newbie] C++ compiler broken?

1999-10-14 Thread Gerry Marcelo

Greetings to all:

I have a "Workstation" default install of Mandrake 6.1, and loving it!

However, I have attempted to compile a few games and have run into a
problem:
when I run "./configure" the process runs for a while and then returns an
error with my C++ compiler.
The process checks to see if the C++ compiler is there, says "OK" but when
it tests the compiler to see if it's working, it responds "no." The process
ends with the messages that my C++ compiler "can't create"

I have reached this same error with two different gamesI was attempting
the compile each as "root."

I have NO idea how to troubleshoot something like this. I was thinking of
uninstalling and reinstalling the appropriate RPM, but I am unsure which
exact package to mess with.

If someone could suggest some things I can try, I would appreciate it.

Thanks and Regards,

Re: [newbie] How daunting is a kernel upgrade?

1999-09-03 Thread Gerry Doyon

I would say that as long as you have a good boot disk and/or have a copy of the
old kernel on the hard disk that you should go ahead and crank yourself a new
kernel.

I was also a little intimidated my first couple tries. After all I thought to
myself, I don't want to have to re-install the whole dang operating system if I
can' boot anymore ! The "toughest" part of the whole thing was running
configure to set up what options you want rolled in to the kernel. And, is it
better to make it part of the kernel itself or make it a loadable module?
Practice makes perfect. Or, in my case, competent I think.

On Thu, 02 Sep 1999, you wrote:

at kernel.org? Is it preferable for me to stick to a Mandrake release of
 any given kernel?

I guess what I'm looking for is a slightly more hands-on howto (I have
read the kernel howtos, and what keeps me from simply following the
directions is that, knowing how crucial the kernel is, I just don't want
to botch it), and at this point, there seem to be an awful lot of starting
places (cooker, kernel.org, the new cassini test, and so on). Those of you
who are familiar with this, can you offer a little guidance? I don't need
hand-holding so much as just an indication that if I, for example, start
with the cooker kernel, I'll be on the right track.

Re: [newbie] need to set up simple network

1999-08-29 Thread Gerry Doyon

Jim, you'll be needing Samba. Check out their web site at
http://www.samba.org. You can install it via an RPM, or tar file. Using an
RPM *should* set everything up for you. I *think* it will also put the two
daemons in your inetd.conf but am not sure. You can then use "smbclient" to
connect to all the PC's.

I just bought and EXCELLENT book yesterday called "Teach Yourself Samba in 24
Hours" bys Sam's. I've already read the whole thing and am starting through
it again.

Re: [newbie] Re: Kmidi to work when logged in as user...

1999-07-06 Thread gerry

Karen,

At the command line "su" (substitute user) [in this case you need to
become rootuser to change the permission of /dev/midi*, so you will need
to enter the root's password] and then type

ls -al /dev/midi*
(the "*" is there, because, at least on my system there are 4 separate
files, /dev/midi00, /dev/midi01,... look at the letters/permissions that
start the lines)

owner group other(hoped that lined up ok)
probably something like ... crw-rw-r--

you and Charles want _a_ll users to be able to write /dev/midi* (want
that second "-" from the end to turn into a "w")

so this is what you probably want to type

  chmod -v a+w /dev/midi*

(the -v option above gives you "verbose" output)

Repeating the ls -al /dev/midi* command will also show the changes.

Now quickly, before you for forget, type "exit" or use "Ctrl+D" to exit
from root user back to "yourself."

Axalon was brief, but to the point, in his assistance.

In the future, if given a clue like that you can use "apropos" and "man"
(and sometimes "info") to gather background, and often sufficient,
information to solve your problem.

type "apropos permission" (in fact, you can get away with typing
"apropos perm")

and then type "man chmod" [use spacebar to go to the next screen and
q to quit.]

You may want to browse "man man" as well. (man refers to "manual" as
in "instructions")

If apropos doesn't work, then, as root, again, type "makewhatis" (to get
a brief idea about what's happening, you can type "man whatis"]. Don't
forget to use "exit" or C-d (control-d), to leave rootuser, after you're
done."

[btw (by the way), I really wish you'd let me be the judge of who's
dumb, stupid, uninformed, miseducated, uneducated, turtle-brained,
slug-headed,... (and who's not)g.]

Hope that helps.

 Hi:

I have two question below:

1. I want to change the resolution of X-windows from 16 color to 24 bit
color.Help say that using 'alt'-'ctrl'-'+', but it doesnt work.

8, 16, 24, or 32 bits per pixel (bpp) is the "color depth," not the
-resolution-. The default color depth was chosen when you setup X using
Xconfigurator, XF86Setup, or whatever. Assuming you have sufficient
video memory for your screen size, use

  startx -- -bpp 24

to have Xwindow start with "24 bit" color.

** Color depth cannot be changed without exiting to the command line. **

2. The desktop is too big about 4 times than my screen of monitor. Why? I
have to move my mouse all around in order to find some thing on the screen.

This is dependent on screen resolution, e.g. 640x480, or 800x600, or
1024x768(?), or You chose the allowable resolutions when you setup
X using
Xconfigurator, XF86Setup, or The highest resolution is the only
one that will show the full screen. That is, if I setup X so that at
16bpp I can have 800x600 or 640x480, I'll have to pan around (using the
pointer/mouse as you describe), while 800x600 will show the "entire
desktop." The resolution that comes up is the one listed first in
/etc/X11/Xconfig (I think that's the file Mandrake looks to when you
run startx). You can view the file by running

less /etc/X11/Xconfig

from the ocmmand line.

Here's what a part of mine looks like.

-=-=-
Section "Screen"
   Driver "SVGA"
   Device "My Video Card"
   Monitor "My Monitor"
   DefaultColorDepth 16
   BlankTime 0
   SuspendTime 0
   OffTime 0
   SubSection "Display"
  Depth8
  Modes"1024x768" "800x600"
  Virtual 1024 768
  ViewPort 0 0
   EndSubSection
   SubSection "Display"
  Depth15
  Modes"1024x768" "800x600"
   EndSubSection
-=-=-

The first resolution listed (as Modes) in the -- SubSection "Display" --
is the resolution that you see when Xwindow starts. If there are other
resolutions listed on the line they can be achieved using the
Ctl+Alt++(numberpad) that you mentioned.
