I don't seem to find my way around there particularly well.

Count me in there. It is a valuable place to hold all Mandrake related
issues, just kinda rough getting around.

My main question is: will the boot loader (Lilo) maintain windows
 access.

If you will be doing a fresh install, don't worry about this one. Lilo
has always provided a Windows entry - IRC even if it finds just a fat32
partition table *without* M$ installed.

Maybe I should also ask: recommended partitions? Suppose it needs a
 new thread.

someone else could give a go here - I use just the basics. just
/, /home and one for swap (3 total)

[newbie] login problem

2005-02-13 Thread Mr Steve Harris
Hello,
My son recently installed Mandrake 10.1 over 9.2 on my
machine. While most things seem to be going smoothly,
sometimes it takes a long time to log in.

The machine has a p3 and 256MB RAM.

It gets to the GUI login screen. I log in, but it
then sits there and does nothing for sometimes over 10
minutes. It does it for other users as well, using
both KDE and Gnome. It doesn't do it all the time,
nor can I see a pattern.

Can anyone help?

Steve.

To explain how I got WinMe to work you need to understand that
windows must think it's in control, hence the 'map' entries - I
turn things on for windows then turn them off again ~ enough to
fool windows into believing it is in control.

So, though starting with other- may not be the way, I need to
tell lilo where to find the image I want it to use, and that
critter is in the boot partition on hdb which the current system
sees as /mnt/hdb2_boot . Lilo of course would see it as
 /dev/hdb2.

Basically, lilo needs to be pointed at that partition the moment I

 select it as an option.

What I've done in the past (not saying it is the correct way to
do it, or the only way) is to copy all the necessary files out of
/boot from all partitions which

noticed I botched that root=/dev/hdb line... didn't notice the root
listing below your table entry (gotta slow down on reading!). I did
manage to find my lilo.conf from my 9.1 install for an example;

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
vga=normal
default=Mandrake9.1
keytable=/boot/us.klt

append=hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off
vga=788
read-only
other=/dev/hda1

table=/dev/hda

I would say drop the other= line and replace it with
image=/boot/vmlinuz and remove the table= line as well for
starters.

should not be a problem, if you need to restore it back to win for
some reason, something like a fdisk /mbr or something like that
could be run from a win boot disk which would reload the Master Boot

be needed either.

if you don't feel comfortable doing that, you could always save the
bootloader to a floppy to avoid overwriting your mbr.

even used it to setup fat32 partitions so as to install that

I do not recall seeing your kword post, but if it was like this one,

Alot of the regulars here setup filters in such a way that if the

You installed it using rpm, no? Under mandrake one needs to use urpmi, as
its
urpmi that is having the problem.

I am not sure how to correct this problem, if there is one.
Now, let the configure your hardware stuff alone, Use the Cups software to
configure it all. Point your browser at http://localhost:631/ and fire
away.
The CUPS web interface should come right up.

If you have problems with that, and its a pretty simple interface, then
you
can click the on-line help link to get help from the cups website.

  Thank you,

It is real easy. Just go through the printer configuration Wizard in
Mandrake
Control CentreHardware on each machine starting with the machine with the
 attached printer.

The wizard will install the CUPS print server which will make the printer
 available to any computer.

If you have Windows computers on the net, then install Samba after
setting
up the printer, and then Samba will make the printer available to Windows
 users.

The only problem you might have is if you have a firewall running on
either
machine. If the firewall is in place you will need to open port 631.

This used to happen to me every time I would install a new version of

eventually quit testing the xserver during install.

Key here is, I never upgraded the monitor - those settings remain the
same for each version of MD. Now I have the monitor specs kept within
arms length and plug in the appropriate horizontal and vertical refresh
rates each time, and avoid the xserver test. I just choose the custom
setting during install and it provides fields for you to fill out -
sorry I cannot be specific as to what that area of the install is like
and what to look for, it's been awhile since that happened last.

IRC though, I thought the xserver test eventually times out and puts you
back to the install without freezing up. Again, been awhile so I don't
know if that happens now or not.

Warning though, be sure to plug in the correct values for your specific
monitor. If you do not have them, go to their web site and search up
their support area for your monitor. Unlike windows which trys to
protect your system/monitor (can the word protect be in the same
sentence as windows?) linux will allow you to fry the monitor at your
discretion.

Good luck

There are many different distributions of LRP to choose from. I believe
some may even refer to their versions as something other than LRP, but
you should be able to discover those by going to web sites which contain

I have always been under the impression that file is created by other
means than directly editing it. When eth0 connects to Comcast and pulls
a IP, doesn't it update /etc/resolv.conf automatically for nameservers?

We have always had our broadband provided thru the same cable, they just
change the name the check goes to quite often. Used to be ATT, now
Comcast, but for some reason we have stayed within ATT's network
apparently. Could this be out-dated info perhaps?

You do not need to declare your servers external IP address (the

The internal address (facing your local net) must be in a different

DNS is not used to discover IP addresses in the internal network, so
you must put entries in the hosts table.

Thanks for your help Derek,
with your suggestions I have managed to get the server to connect to
Todd's site, but none of the clients can resolve his site yet.

First I changed the linux systems hostnames in their respective

HOSTNAME=server.homenetwork
HOSTNAME=steve.homenetwork
HOSTNAME=andrea.homenetwork

then I updated (and removed any mention of homeip.net) their hosts
files,

server's /etc/hosts;
192.168.1.1 server.homenetwork server

client's respective /etc/hosts files;
192.168.1.15steve.homenetwork steve
192.168.1.25andrea.homenetwork andrea

I have also logged out (to reset the hostname), logged back in and
restarted the network service on all the linux systems. None of the
Windows systems had any mention of homeip.net in their setups so I
believe they shouldn't be the source of DNS resolve errors.

It seems as if the server or one of the clients is holding onto the
homeip.net domain somehow still. Is there anywhere else that domain
might be listed and I need to remove it?

Somehow I feel this is a easy oneugh!

swapped out my M$ Intel(stupid)keyboard with a plain jane and I was on
my way.

that keyboard worked for me since 8.x too. Never bothered looking
for a fix - just one less POS hardware towards a completely free M$
system.

Might just try swapping keyboards and see what happens if ya haven't

Only thing left is the M$ mouse...hope a security hole doesn't happen
with that! like yeah right (ya never know)

No, an just don't delete the kernel. You'll still be stuck
with many files, as in /lib/modules/kernel version

Use 'rpm -qa | grep -i kernel' to list installed kernels, then
'urpme kernel-x.x.x' to remove all of of the one(s) you want
 to remove. Example:

tom $ rpm -qa | grep -i kernel
 kernel-2.6.6.0.rc3.1mdk-1-1mdk
 kernel-tmb-2.6.5-1.tmb.5mdk-1-1mdk
 kernel-sds-2.6.7-0.rc1.1.sds.1mdk-1-1mdk
 kernel-2phoenix-2.6.6.1mdk-1-1mdk
 kernel-tmb-source-2.6.5-1.tmb.1mdk
 kernel-sds-2.6.7-0.rc2.1.sds.1mdk-1-1mdk

So if I wanted to remove all files of 2.6.5-1.tmb, including
it's lilo entry, I'd su to root and type
 'urpme kernel-tmb-2.6.5-1.tmb.5mdk-1-1mdk'

(use copy'n paste to avoid typos).

Make sure you're not removing a kernel that is currently your
(lilo) default kernel and that you're currently using the one you
want to keep ('uname -r'). If you have kernel-source installed,
remove that with urpme also, as above. Kernel-source and modules
removal will yield the most disk space. Kernel files in /boot
take up very little space. In any event 'urpme' will clean up
 the whole deal.

[newbie] Argh! Accented characters (again)

2004-05-30 Thread Steve Mansfield
On my SuSE 8.2 system I can type accented characters on this UK keyboard by
using AltGr as a 'dead key' - ie, AltGr-; then e gives é.

I just tried that on a Mandrake 10.0 Community installation and ... nothing.
No accents. I've Googled on this and have found loads of highly confusing and
contradictory explanations of how to get accented characters. Many of these
explanations refer to config files that aren't on my system.

There seems to be a file called /etc/X11/Xmodmap which looks promising but I
can't work out what to add to get a dead key (I'd prefer to use AltGr as on
my SuSE system).

Any pointers?

Absolutely right - my point is that I like each job to be done by a separate
app. If you're using one app to act as browser, email client and newsreader
(not to mention HTML editor, address book etc) then it's harder to adopt
newer, better single-function apps when they become available. In other
words, if a whizzy new browser comes along, you either have to find new
clients to do all the other functions that you were doing with your old
browser, or carry on using it accepting that you're carrying deadweight.

I like Opera a lot, but I wish they'd produce a 'lite' version which was just
a browser, the way Mozilla has done with Firebird/Firefox. That said (and
talking about deadweight) I have Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, Firebird and
Firefox installed on this machine, because I use them all to check the web

[newbie] Konq's gone weird

2004-05-21 Thread Steve Mansfield
I've run into a problem with a new install of Mandrake 10 Community.
Everything's been working fine until now, but suddenly Konqueror is refusing
to behave like a proper browser.

The PC is connected to a local network which also has an ISDN router. Konq was
able to access the web without trouble and also our intranet server on
192.168.0.2.

But suddenly, if I feed it a URL - even if I specifically give it the http://
- it comes back with 'file or folder not found'.

I have made a few config changes recently, the most significant probably being
the resolv.conf file which now says:

search local
nameserver 192.168.0.1

(All machines on the network have the domain 'local' - and the machine itself
has the hostname 'photolib.local'. That nameserver is the IP address of the
router).

Netscape on the same machine is having no problems at all accessing the server
or the web, and mail is working fine (using the same server as a mail server)
so I presume the problem is in Konq's config somewhere. Anyone have any
ideas?

The router kicks DNS requests further upstream to the DNS servers assigned

[newbie] Confused about domain names

2004-05-17 Thread Steve Mansfield
I'm a little uncertain about which domain name to use for my network
configuration. Here's the setup:

* I have a small home network. Until today, only one of the machines on it was
running Linux - now I've installed Mandrake 10 Community on another.
* I own a domain name - let's call it mydomain.com - so when I was installing
Mandrake I chose this for the machine's domain. The machine's name is 'photo'
So the FQDN for that machine is: photo.mydomain.com.
* However, the other Linux machine, called 'scoop' (running SuSE, as it
happens) selected for itself the domain 'local' - so that machine is
'scoop.local'.
* The domain mydomain.com is actually hosted by a third party, not on my
machines.

Does any of this matter much? Are there advantages to having both machines
using 'mydomain.com'? I thought I'd ask because I've just persuaded my better
half to convert to Linux, so a third Linux machine will be joining the
network.

I've googled a fair bit on this, but nothing I've found really tackles the
issue of whether it matters what domain name you choose - simply that you
have to have one!

Intuitively, I can see that it might be best if all the machines have the same
DN - I don't know what it affects, but it seems sensible that they would. But
should it be 'mydomain.com' or 'local'?

I'd appreciate any thoughts.

These are all the different kernel flavours. You only need to install the
one
corresponding to the kernel you are using.
If you do not know which kernel you are using hit Ctl+Alt+F1 and the
kernel
revision will be shown above the prompt (Ctl+Alt+F7 to go back to X)

 This page http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/MdkKernel92
describes
the kernel flavours (It is a bit out of date and does not mention the 2.6
 kernels)

New kernels have to be installed not upgraded so open a terminal, su to
become
 root, then
urpmi.update -a (to update tour urpmi database), followed by
 urpmi kernel
You will be provided with a list of available kernels. Pick the one you
want.

On your next boot you will be running the new kernel, there will be a new
Lilo
menu entry to enable you to select the old kernel if you wish.

kernel-2.6.3.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm is the kernel to use

kernel-source-2.6.3-9mdk.i586.rpm is the source code to build the kernel.
You would only need this if you needed to compile your own kernel
 modules/drivers.

For example if you have an Nvidia graphics card and you want to use the
Nvidia
supplied 'nvidia' driver instead of the default opensource 'nv' driver,
you
would need to install the kernel-source so the nvidia-installer
application
could compile a new nvidia driver

Don't really understand what the big deal is, so they have switched from
Unix to Linux and have no intention of dropping windows from their desktops.
As far as other comments go about Windows being given away, it will never
happen unless Gates wants to give even more of his personal fortune up to
the US Justice Department.

I use and see the advantage of Linux but it will never be a big player as it
is too difficult for a layman or typical computer user to use.

The thing that makes me uneasy if the quote Linux's killer app is not
Apache, it's cost,. It has been said that M$ have contingency plans
to give away windows if necessary until linux is beaten. They are
stockpiling funds to cover it. Let's hope that's another report that's
wrong, because cost is *the* big factor in too many decisions.

In the course of reading Hadamard's The Psychology of Invention in the

we coffee achievers have long appreciated: no really creative,
intelligent thought is possible without a good cup of coffee. On page
14, Hadamard is discussing Poincare's theory of fuchsian groups and
fuchsian functions, which he describes as ... one of his greatest
discoveries, the first which consecrated his glory ... Hadamard refers
to Poincare having had a ... sleepless night which initiated all that
memorable work ... and gives the following, very revealing quote: One
evening, contrary to my custom, I drank black coffee and could not

black coffee was contrary to his custom. Maybe he could really have

[newbie] pw prompt/sudo

2004-04-13 Thread Steve Hammond
Hmmm

Got a new harddrive, reinstalled Mandrake 9.2use GNOME, have a good idea
of what i'm doing during install so I don't think i did anything drastically
different from previous ones.

However, since install, over half of my applications/launchers/etc can't be
run as any user outside of root. plus, instead of just prompting me for
root pws on applicable stuff, i.e. rpmdrake, harddrake, and the like, it
just pops a window on me quoting insufficient rights.

I thought this might have something to do with sudo (not too familiar with
the program, it's just that it was suggested on a linuxhelp channel. I
wasn't really sure where to start with sudo (except that I knew I had it),
so I tried removing it and then recompiling it. As far as I know, it got
reinstalled properly, but did nothing to change my situation.

I'm thinking this lack of access to half my launchers is the reason why i
can't get anything on my menu unless i recompile them.

Thanks in advance,

Questions:
1. Has anyone used any of this hardware?

I tend to use Netgear stuff, but it seems to me that it is all pretty good,
exspecially if you don't mix and match brands between the router and the
nics.

2. How good is the router's integrated firewall?

It will probably be good enough to prevent anybody that might scan your ip
address from seeing a machine running.

3. Since wireless introduces some security problems, what measures should
be taken?

You can turn on WEP to encrypt your traffic, but this in my mind is less of a
risk than preventing people you don't want to access the lan from logging in.

-Change the default essid and password
-Turn on authentication by mac address, so only your two computers can log on
and obtain an ip address
-Turn on wep, realizing that you might lose some network throughput, although
if you are not transferring files back and forth, your wireless net will
still be faster than the cable modem, so you shouldn't ever notice it.

4. Wife's PC is pure Mandrake 9.1; mine is Mandrake 9.2 with a
non-functional Win98SE installation. (No, not another MS dig -- it hasn't
been used since a major hardware upgrade last year. I'd like to keep it
that way.) DLink claims that the router and wireless adapters are
compaible with Linux, but their manuals only cover Windows.

Be prepared to possibly have to at least update your wife's kernel to get
support for whatever nic you choose. Depending on how new, the kernel from
9.1 (or 9.2 for that matter) may not support the nic you have chosen,
although later kernels might. Try to find someone using this hardware and
find out what kernel version works well before committing.

You may wanted to consider upgrading both boxes to 10.0 when it becomes
official in a couple of weeks. The drakconnect wizard is really good at
setting up wireless now and there is a better chance the new kernel will
support your nics.

4. Can I install, configure all of the DLink stuff and verify that it works
prior to the visit by the cable guy?

Yes, in fact it might be helpful to see if the signal will be strong enough
from the most convenient place to place the router, instead of the best place
to get strong signal, which might be inaccesible and difficult to run a cable
line to.

5. How much of a hassle will it be with the cable modem and router in a
remote location?

If you have to reset the modem and router, you usually have to remove power
from it and then recycle them, nmodem first and then router. I rarely have
to do that with mine, but when I do, it is nice that it is accessible. Plus,
when I am havng a problem, it is easy to check and see if the modem has sync.

Greg,

What about having the cable run on the outside of the house for the
office? They should be able to split it where it comes into the house
on the outside. My home has a box on the outside with 3 or 4

One caveat, Steve. We had a telephone wire going round the outside of
the house like that. One day we had a thunderstorm, lightning found
the cable, and the whole system (including a mini-switchboard setup)

Do you have the module 'scanner' in your /etc/modules file? For reasons
beyond me Mandrake recognizes the that it is a scanner, but insists that it
can not be configured through the scanner device tool. I guess only the
scanner device tool adds the 'scanner' entry.

Xsane found the printer/scanner just fine after I added it. You'll either
need to reboot, or 'modprobe scanner'.

You'll find a little more information on the TWiki. Anne can point you to
the correct link if you can't find it ;)

Do you have the module 'scanner' in your /etc/modules file? For reasons
beyond me Mandrake recognizes the that it is a scanner, but insists that it
can not be configured through the scanner device tool. I guess only the
scanner device tool adds the 'scanner' entry.

Xsane found the printer/scanner just fine after I added it. You'll either
need to reboot, or 'modprobe scanner'.

You'll find a little more information on the TWiki. Anne can point you to
the correct link if you can't find it ;)

Well I finally got the time to mess with this last night after getting
Thunderbird to work on both my windoze and MD systems. It now shares
the folders correctly and I can read my emails from either side.

So as you can see below I did it. To make this work in TB I had to run
it from cron (which I set up to do every minute) and the output of the
command goes to a signature.txt file.

On quick question if you please. Being very new at this ... For corn to

Do you install from CD? If so the cd you use might be bad. I

Re: [newbie] Triple Boot Mandrake

2004-03-14 Thread Steve Kaufman

Here's a real newbie question but maybe a good answer

Why not backup your lilo.conf to a diskette and thenmerge it with the one 10.0 will build. Actually after you boot to 10.0 can't you just mount the old partisions and get access to the old lilo.conf?

Can't you just let 10.0buildLILO to the MBR? When I build 9.2 it found all my bootable devices so I would thinkthat during the the 10.0 install that the process would find window/9.2/10.0 and build the boot record accordingly and even if it didn't you could then just take the conf file you backed up and merge it with the one 10.0 built.

This is totally a guess on my part beinga very newbie and not having loaded 10.0 but it seems logicalI know I shouldn't trust logic but what the he**.

Had I been installing 10.0 this is the choice I would have used.

I'm guessing that it will overwrite. Seems to be the logical thing for it
to do, considering that you won't be upgrading, but installing. (Your 9.2
partition won't be mounted, thus it won't know about your /etc/lilo.conf).

But this is just me firing shots in the dark :)

It is quite easy.During installation of 10.0, you will be asked a question
of where to install the bootloader. The choices should be 1) on MBR 2) on /
(root) partition, or 3) do not install.

You want to choose number 2, install to root partition.

You will temporarily not be able to boot into 10.0 until you go back into 9.2
and adjust your lilo there.Make note of the device for the root partition
for 10.0 (something like /dev/hda6) Then when the installation finishes, it
will reboot and you will get your old lilo menu.boot to 9.2 and then edit
your /etc/lilo.conf file. You should see a stanza in there for winxp that
looks like this:

other=/dev/hda1
label="windows"
table=/dev/hda

Add another one for 10.0 that looks like this:

other=/dev/hdax
label="Mandrake10"
table=/dev/hda

replace the /dev/hdax with the actual root partition of your 10.0 install.

now run lilo to effect the changes and when you reboot, you should see an
entry for 10.0.When you swelect it, the 10.0 lilo menu should come up with
a choice to boot 10.0.

I hope I didn't make any mistakes, but the others on this list will quickly
correct me if I did.HTH.

Yes there are ways to use this, in fact it is much easier using GrUB than with
LILO, but as this is a newbie list, I chose to instruct in getting a 10.0
installation triple booted with a minimum amount of fuss and
learning/research. These other methods require a little more planning and
advanced knowledge about how the kernel boots.

The instructions to use one instance of LILO or GrUB exist all over the place,
and any enterprising user could find what they need if they know what they
are doing. So, in the interest of getting the OP going ASAP, this does the
job. If he later wants to go do the required learning to simplify the setup,
he can do that when he is ready.

The other nice thing about the method I noted is that you can then install any
OS on that spare partition and never have to update the main lilo.conf again.
Always chainloading the boot will let whatever OS you install on that spare
partition boot without additional work. This is the method I use on my spare
partition that I use for running cooker or experimenting with other distros.
I can forever do clean installs and just install the bootloader to the root
partition, making the first reboot easy. If you consolidate the bootloaders,
every time you install something new, you have to go back and boot the
controlling OS and edit the bootloader config.

All,

I spent a lot of time and frustration trying to get Firefox and

Twiki explaining how I made this work.

I hope it was appropriate to do this as it is not directly a
Makdrake Linux thing but more of an application thing but I thought
it would be appropriate.

For anyone interested it is at
http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/ThunderbirdAndFirefox

I intend on adding more things to it as I have time but wanted to
get it down while it was still fresh.

Part two will be how to be able to share Thunderbird with windows so
I can read all of this stuff from the list in both win and Linux.
That is the only reason I went with Thunderbird.

I have pulled some information from the Mozzila forums but have not
had time to play with it.
