Amy, Okay, so there's this one font I absolutely loved to death when I was still using windows. Is there any way to make it work with Mandrake? I've still got the file for it from windows, so if there's a way to convert it to work, I'd be very happy to do what's needed for that. [newbie] Fonts annoyance
I don't know if this is the right list to post this problem. I am using KDE under Mandrake 10, kernel 2.6.3. A few days ago my laptop was shutdown improperly (a power lost). After that, every time X is started the fonts in Evolution, Mozilla and some other applications are pretty small, let's say something like 6/7 points. After googling for a solution I found out that starting gnome-control-center and double clicking on Fonts everything was back to normal. Further research pointed to gnome-settings-daemon as being the program to run to get the fonts looking nice. This is not a major problem because my computer stays up and running after I started it in the morning and I just need to start gnomecc once a day but, is there any way to get the original behavior? Aside from that, and concerning OpenOffice fonts, you can check here: http://www.openoffice.org/FAQs/fontguide.html The section on Changing the user interface font, will get you a much better looking UI. I don't use Gnome, and I find configuration to be quite confusing in it as compared to KDE, which I do use, and like. With Gnome, I think maybe you have to do more configuration on an individual program basis. KDE seems to have things more integrated, at least to me. YMMV, of course. Someone more familiar with Gnome will be able to help you a lot more, but maybe this will help a little. [newbie] Fonts
Hi again, Sorry, but I seem to have deleted the answer given to my question about having newly installed fonts available at startup. My question was: I installed new fonts recently in /usr/X11R6/bin/X11/fonts. What should I do to make the fonts available when I start my PC? Do I need to include the xset command in some configuration file? I tried to add the font paths to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, so the file now looks like this: begin # File generated by XFdrake. # ** # Refer to the XF86Config man page for details about the format of # this file. # ** Section Files # Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together) # By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of # the X server to render fonts. FontPath unix/:-1 FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/freefont FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/sharefont FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/URW EndSection etc end It doesn't work (I tested it by trying the text tool in Gimp). Did I make the entry wrong? I read something about adding to file /etc/rc.d/rc.local but I couldn't figure out what should be added there and why. Could this be the solution? Any suggestions are most welcome. Marco -- Tell me about these oppressed masses. What's got them so worked up ? [newbie] fonts problem under mandrake 9.1
Hi all, I have installed Linux Mandrake 9.1 on my machine. But there is some problems with charset or font. My man pages, info pages, BitchX screen etc are not seen properly. Smething like, â, ââchive same as âpR My local lug members suggested using LANG=C and exporting it. But it does not work. Also, I used consolechars with -f and -m options with various fonts and charsets but still the same problem. This happens in X as well as CLI. One member also suggested, # mv /etc/sysconfig/i18n /etc/sysconfig/i18n.old One says that I should *not* use UTF8 as default character set. How to change this to appropiate one and which one to change to? What must be the problem? Loking eagerly for any clue on this. Mandrake 9.1 My problem is that in some applications the fonts look washed out. It usually looks like some form of Helvetica, but I am not sure. How do I control the fonts that applications use in KDE? KDE's control panel lets one change the fonts kde uses for menus and file names, but I need to control the fonts within an application. I know this is very vague. Any pointers on where to find information about fonts would be appreciated. I seem to remember having this trouble on a linux system years ago and back then the solution including coping a bunch of fonts from a windows system and using them within Xwindows. [newbie] Fonts - again
O.K. so I guess this is still an issue. I have been reading about fonts in Linux from several web sites, but still need help with this. Mandrake 9.1 -KDE (3.1) running in the 1024x768 @60 Hz with 24bpd graphics mode. I have downloaded and installed all the updates for this system. Athlon 1Ghz 512 MB RAM Over 200GB of disk storage over several IDE disks. ATI Radeon 7000 video card. (XFree86 4.3 with 3D Hardware Acceleration) Princeton 18.2 LCD monitor. For now I am going to run in the 800x600 video mode, but would perfer a different solution. I connected into the above system from my Laptop running Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and copied all the fonts from the system folder over. I then ran the Mandrake font installer from the control panel. It did successfully install the fonts, but it did not fix my problem. In most applications the fonts look jagged and thin. One can play around and find fonts that look better than the defaults in about 60% of the applications. In a couple apps I have not been able to find a way to fix the problem at all. So why can't we have Mac like rendering of our fonts? Where does the problem hide? Do people who buy their xwindows systems have this problem? Is this an Linux issue or an XFree86 issue? [newbie] fonts messed up in konsole
Hello I just installed 9.1 on my Toshiba satellite. The RH 8.0 release came in answer to the MDK 9.0 release - it was more an exercise in prettying up the GUI's and melting the WM's into one desktop environment - only way I can think about putting it. Are you sure they've disappeared, or is it one application in particular that can't see them? Anne Anne, the app they disappeared from was actually kmail and konqueror for sure, the only fonts I could bring up there was the MS fonts that I installed. I must have gotten only part of the MS fonts also cause the ones I did have were really bad. Even with antialiasing. I uninstalled and have my generic ML 9.0 fonts back and I like them well enough to leave MS to MS. Thanks, Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] Fonts in KDE solved
You may remember that I asked how to get the added windows fonts available to KWord (they were visible in OpenOffice). During a considerable browsing session I came across this: 'If you wish to use Unicode fonts with KWord (so that you can access symbols such as smart quotes, and the Euro), then I suggest you use KDE's control centre to change the KDE fonts from Helvetica to Arial. Whilst this did not seem directly relevant, I though it might be a sensible move. It is then necessary to re-login to re-start KDE. Amazingly, when I then opened KWord all the fonts were there. Of course, my email looks rather ugly now, in Arial, but I can experiment with that, I think, now that I know. Anne Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Fonts
Hope this is a simple question (sometimes seems nothing in Linux ever is)? How do you change and/or resize the fonts used on the Gnome desktop? I'm running Mandrake 8.2. I tried drakfont and it talked about installing fonts, but it's not clear to me if *installing* a font is the same as *using* it, or just makes it available. I tried Gnome Control Center System Font. Up popped the 0.11.0 prerelease of the Ximian Setup Tools, telling me the program might have serious bugs that might render my computer PRACTICALLY USELESS (shudder). So I clicked on ok and another window popped up telling me that the platform you are running is not supported, although I could click on one of the listed supported platforms if I was sure mine worked the same way. Feeling brave, I click on Linux Mandrake 8.0 Traktopel. Bingo! I get a screen with a list of fonts and sizes -- apparently. Problem is, I select something and the apply box remains greyed out. So I click on Add font and up pops a Select file or dir box. Now, I would have THOUGHT that the fonts listed were in the path or in some sense available to be selected, as is, but maybe I'm guilty of having a windows mindset. So what do I do now? Do I comb through the fonts directories until I find what I *think* is *maybe* the font and size I've selected? Or is it not that simple? I would be happy to RTFM if I knew which effin manual would lead me in the smallest circle. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dale Huckeby Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Generally each of these ask for a serif font (serif s are the little hooks at the end of letters in typefaces like Times), a sans serif font (sans as in without, so this is like Arial) and a monospaced font (all letters are equally wide, like Courier). That, coupled with an Office compatible program such as StarOffice, could very well be the leaping block that prepels us onto the generic user desktop. [newbie] Fonts in KDE 2.1
Hello Yesterday I took the plunge and installed 8.0beta2 from scratch. One of the things I'm struggling with is fonts in KDE. Whilst on 7.2 everything was fine and I had installed a load of ttf fonts that were formerly used on Windows. What's happened now is that although I've now reinstalled them, and Gnome sees them, KDE refuses to let me use anything other than 6 or 7 basic fonts. If I go to fonts in "Look n Feel" again all I can see is these few not very attractive fonts. What gives? You can check against your rpm by doing rpm -qpil mozilla-fonts..rpm Name: mozilla-fontsRelocations: (not relocateable) Version : 2310 Vendor: MandrakeSoft Release : 5mdk Build Date: Sat 06 May 2000 03:54:58 PM CDT Install date: (not installed) Build Host: kenobi.mandrakesoft.com Group : System/Fonts/X11 bitmap Source RPM: mozilla-fonts-2310-5mdk.src.rpm Size: 656733 License: Distributable Packager: Warly [EMAIL PROTECTED] URL : http://fox.mit.edu/skunk/xwin/ Summary : A set fonts for Netscape and Mozilla Description : This is a complete set of three font faces (Times, Helvetica, Courier) in seven sizes and four variants each, optimized for use by the Netscape (Mozilla) WWW browser under Unix. /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/cour1.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/cour2.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/cour3.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/cour4.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/cour5.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/cour6.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/cour7.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courb1.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courb2.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courb3.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courb4.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courb5.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courb6.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courb7.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courbi1.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courbi2.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courbi3.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courbi4.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courbi5.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courbi6.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/courbi7.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/couri1.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/couri2.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/couri3.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/couri4.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/couri5.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/couri6.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/couri7.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/fonts.alias /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/fonts.dir /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helv0.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helv1.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helv2.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helv3.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helv4.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helv5.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helv6.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helv7.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvb1.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvb2.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvb3.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvb4.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvb5.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvb6.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvb7.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvbi1.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvbi2.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvbi3.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvbi4.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvbi5.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvbi6.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvbi7.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvi1.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvi2.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvi3.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvi4.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvi5.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvi6.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/helvi7.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/times1.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/times2.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/times3.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/times4.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/times5.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/times6.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/times7.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mozilla-fonts/timesb1.pcf.gz
[newbie] Fonts Netscape
Hi Linux friends, Hope somebody can answer this question. How do I add more fonts into KDE... especially the ones like in Win9x/NT like verdana, arial etc? Also, how to stop Netscape Navigator from holding the mouse when it is downloading a page? You know, like IE5 even before a page hasn't finished downloading, we can still do something with the mouse like srolling, click on a link etc... but with Netscape I can't do this. Thanks --- Joe "Linux Mandrake Rules!"

Can we add more fonts to Netscape? How? Set font size to 18 or thereabouts, it'll work fine. Or download the mozilla fonts from www.skunk.mit.edu. Even better, download the latest mozilla binary (current is M16, i think) and use it. It is faster, better, and definitely more eye friendly than Netscape's borg. On any 'cooker' ftp site such as: ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/MandrakeCooker/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS/ ...or any '7.1' site ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake/7.1/Mandrake/RPMS/ you'll find 'drakfontrpm' which installs your windows TT fonts for all X apps including Netscape. NS still looks like heck, so also get the 'mozilla-fontsrpm' which installs some fonts for NS that look a lot better. -- ~~ Tom Brinkman[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [newbie] Fonts in Netscape
I still had to go into the XFS config file mentioned in the README for the Mozilla-Fonts package and add the directory the Mozilla fonts got installed to (look at the file list in the RPM, because it's not the same directory as the readme says). [newbie] fonts in Mandrake 7.0-2
Hi all I'm not sure if anybody could help me, but I have to try. Just few days ago I installed Mandrake 7.0-2. I've got a little problem with fonts. I think it's font server. I'm from Poland, so I'd like to have polish fonts. I installed them and now I've got polish fonts in text mode and in KDE. But when I run konsole in KDE they just disappear. For example when I use "man ls" there is polish text, but no fonts. The same is when "Welcome to KDE" box appear. There is polish text (on buttons), but no fonts. Thanks in advance. Rafal
