since you are using the AMD64 version, you will not need to worry about the
'780' memory limit.
when you hit f1, you will see some instruction to other kernels and switches,
you may need to try more than one switch, adnor commbonation of switches, but
I am betting it is a problem with frame buffer and your video card, I have an
ATI 9700 with 128 meg ram, running amd64 MDK, (but a different MOBO) and I
have to use the 'nofb' switch to install too.

Jimmy,

Hey man, punctuation works wonders!!! Either you just didn't use any or that is an
excerpt from the longest run-on sentence in the history of the English language. That
with your use of numbers in the place of words makes your email fairly difficult to
read.

For scanners check: http://panda.mostang.com/sane/.

For sound cards check: http://www.alsa-project.org/~goemon/ and
http://www.opensound.com/osshw.html.

The best install is to do a fresh format/full install. You have the choice during
install to start X on boot or not.

You can choose from a plethora of editors during install.

2002-03-31 Thread LPH

Hey all,

[Dave !! Jimmy did fine. The English did the job by conveying the message.]

There are several types of installations. Usually booting off the CD and following
the prompts on the screen is the best method. MandrakeLinux is able to detect most of
the common hardware found in machines. However, there are exceptions and you'll want
to check Mandrake's site to make sure your hardware is supported.

Near the end of the installation you'll be asked during the install if you want the
machine to boot into X window system. Just answer no if you don't want to go directly
into it.

There are great websites on using Mandrake. These will be available when you launch
Konqueror. The best method is to use a search engine (such as google) and type in
keywords.

In terms of a good text editor - Mandrake installs some very good ones. There are gui
and non gui editors. So - take your pick from the lot that are installed. Of course,
any die-hard Linux fan is going to remind you to take the time to learn the command
line and learn Vi.

BTW: Don't forget to purchase a boxed set. You'll get a hard copy of manuals which
are very valuable.

Good luck

i installed mandrake 8.0 without servers.
i configured tiny firewall (everything no) with the mandrake control tool.
i set security high in this tool, but he doesnt remember that. when logged in

logged in as a user
i type netstat -l in a xterm:

so, i have several servers running? -blackjack,sunrpc etc..

I then tried to use Bastille but it would (logged in as a root, in etc/usr
and any other) display:

Michael S,

Your best bet as far as the kernel is concerned is to take a look at the
kernel howto on linuxdoc.org, if you want to build from .tar.gz source.

If you installed kernel-source (check by doing rpm -qa | grep kernel), the
source files are under /usr/src/linux-whatever (where whatever is the
version number of the kernel you have installed--for example, I have kernel
2.2.19 installed, so the sources are in /usr/src/linux-2.2.19.)

So you have no launch pad for your Graphical login.

file:/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/modules.dep has nothing labeled 'char', so it
should not be looking for this as a module.

My friend, it is time to experiment with replacing memory or to take a hard
look at your HDD. The kernel is showing some damage here, trying to load as
a module what is built-in (no modular options in a kernel compilation).

A temporary cure is reinstallation, but this sort of behavior means serious
trouble, most likely with hardware.

rgrep -r -i "modprobe char" /etc

showed nothing, so Mandrake initscripts and /etc/modules.conf are not causing
this behavior. Did you install anything recently, like right before this
happened? If not, look at your hardware.

Your disk drive is toast or your memory is bad. Check the memory first, but
it looks like a lot of compounded disk write errors.

GNU/Linux is much much less forgiving of hardware errors than any other op
system It always tries to use ALL of memory for something because its
philosophy is that usused memory is wasted memory, so it shows up memory
errors that existed undetected fior months or years on a Windows system
(undetected, that is, except for modem freezes and game crashes).

If the memory is good, try a reinstall, hit F1 at the splash screen and type
either

linux idebus=33

or

linux ide0=noautotune

to avoid the problems of a disk advertising that it can do ATA/66 (with
errors) when it can do ATA/33 without.

you'll have to be very careful when using the partition tool such as pqmagic.

Re: [newbie] Please Help a Newbie! Problem Installing Linux-Mandrake 7.1 - Cannot initialize CDROM

2000-11-15 Thread L. H. LOO

Grace,
Try my way : make a bootdisk from your Win98 - must have drivers to use
your cdrom drive. Use this disk to boot to DOS, that is when boot process
is completed you see A: on the monitor - insert linux cd into the cdrom
drive - type cd C: {if you cdrom has been detected as C: else change
accordingly} -cd dosutils - cd autoboot - cd mdkinst -{type} cdrom.bat
- press [Enter] on keyboard; installation should start. Follow the
installation menu. At one stage you are 'asked' for the 'Extension CD'; if
you do not have it press [Esc] on the keyboard, press [Esc] again to exit.
This is long winded, but that was what worked for me. HTH

Grace , it sounds to me as though there is no partition allocated to Linux
(is this the case?). If so Linux cannot install , you need to allocate space
first. Assuming you've not done that , e-mail me personally if you wish and

A newbie's problem (so pardon me if this may sound stupid).
I'm installing Linux-Mandrake 7.1 on a Pentium PC. I just wanted to try my
hands on it. Upon running the autorun on the DosUtils directory (from Win
98
of course), I click on the "Complete Installation option". The system
reboots and goes to the installation process. The thing is, I cannot get
past the CDROM Initialization screen. It gives me options but I can't seem
to find the right module. I figured out it any IDE/ATAPI driver would
suffice. But its not working. Autoprobe cannot find the darn CDROM. Maybe
my
CDROM drive (EPO CR-844S CDROM)is not supported.

I even turned the PNP OS off. Has anyone encountered this? Any solution
from
 the gurus out there?

it still doesn't work right...there is still about a 7 hour delay
attached is an email from my ISP about the problem:

 Hi Kit,

We don't do anything that would prevent your messages from being
 posted.
Posting to a news group is essentially the same as sending an e-mail
 message
from andonet.com to another mail server. Some news groups have
 filters in
place which scan the message before posting it. I'll look into this
 further
to see if we can help find the problem.

 Best regards,
 One more thing,

Often when reading posted e-mail messages users will click on reply
 to
respond to a particular message in a thread. You are probably doing
 this
already, but be sure you click on Send/Receive to actually make the
 reply
message go. I've found that people who read newsgroups will
 sometimes read
several messages, compose one or two replies, read a few more but not
 send
the message until after closing the e-mail program when the messages
 in the
 OutBox are finally sent.

Finally, I noticed you are using the name SystemsAdministrator in
 your To:
message header, this can cause problems for e-mail programs which
automatically fill in the actual e-mail address from a directory.
SystemsAdministrator is used by so many ISPs (including us) that when
 your
e-mail directory is updated, a previous username may no longer be
 associated
 with the SystemsAdministrator directory entry.

Re: [newbie] Please Help !

2000-05-15 Thread Michael

Throsten, I too had the same problem. I am a newbie so forgive the lack of
exact wording.
you need to edit your "lilo.conf" file in /etc/lilo.conf
look for a line that starts with: append="" where stands for
something i can't remember, in any event inside the quotes type a space
after the only entry or last entry and type:
mem=128M it should be inside the quotes
once your config is saved run /sbin/lilo.conf
when you reboot your system should read the new memory amt.
also good to read with more detailed explination :
http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/hardware/ramdetect.html

good luck

[newbie] Please help...Laptop XServer Problems

2000-05-09 Thread Br. Karekin Madteos Yarian, BSG

Any help???

I have recently installed Mandrake 7.0 on my HP Pavilion N3215 laptop. I
can't get X to work at a resolution higher than 640x480.

Mandrake automatically installed the XFree86_FBDev server which is more than
RedHat 6.2 did. No matter what I try...and I have follwed the advice of two
people on the Linux laptop pages (two different and unworkable solutions to
boot) and to no avail.

Here are my card and monitor specs.

Card: Trident CyberBlade 3D 17 AGP with 4096 RAM (stolen from physical RAM)

Monitor (per HP): HPA 12.1" SVGA Passive Matrix
VertRefresh: 75 Mhz
Horiz Sync: 85 Mhx

I have tried and failed at any number of combinations with Xdrakres.

Xconfigurator has let me manually input all the above info and still can't
find a workable resolution. All I want is 800x600. In spite of the fact that
my monitor supports 1280x768 while in Windoze.

The BIOS allows me to allocate Auto, 4Mb or 8Mb to Video RAM.

Any suggestions?? I'm about desperate. I wanted to get Linux running on the
box so I could travel and learn with it.

[newbie] Please Help! Unable to mount Yamaha CRW4416E (read only!) in Mandrake 7.0

2000-01-22 Thread tom

I just installed Mandrake 7.0 yesterday, but have been unable to mount my
Yamaha CRW4416E CRW drive! (I have no problems with NT or Win2K doing so!)
BTW, I am only trying to use the drive as a cdrom in Linux (so far!)

In my system I have an older 12x CDROM drive which mounts fine with the
"supermount" arguments given to it by the /etc/fstab file (I can access
it by single-clicking on the "Cd-Rom" desktop icon in KDE):

-

/dev/hda1 /c vfat user,exec,conv=auto 0 0
/dev/hda5 /d vfat user,exec,conv=auto 0 0
/dev/hda6 /e vfat user,exec,conv=auto 0 0
/dev/hda7 /f vfat user,exec,conv=auto 0 0
/dev/hda8 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/hda9 /home ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/hda10 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hda11 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0
/mnt/cdrom2 /mnt/cdrom2 supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom2 0 0

-

The permissions on the /dev "files" are as follows:

[tom@fiend tom]$ ls -lsa /dev/hdb /dev/hdc
   0 brw--- 1 tom disk 3, 64 May 5 1998 /dev/hdb
   0 brw--- 1 tom disk 22, 0 May 5 1998 /dev/hdc

[tom@fiend etc]$ ls -lsa /dev/cdrom*

   0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root3 Jan 21 16:47 /dev/cdrom2 - hdc

-

When I try to access the Yamaha CRW4416E (by single-clicking on the
"Cd-Rom 2" icon on my desktop), an error box pops up that states:
KFM Error
Could not list directory contents
file"/mnt/cdrom2

-

A little more detail can be seen in the /var/log/messages file:

Jan 22 15:20:52 fiend kernel: ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue (0)
Jan 22 15:20:52 fiend kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 64

I don't think there is an issue with permissions, since I get the same
results when logged in as root. Strangely enough, I also had problems with

Re: [newbie] Please Help! Unable to mount Yamaha CRW4416E (read only!) in Mandrake 7.0

2000-01-22 Thread Richard Yevchak

I had a similar problem. First make sure you can mount the CD-RW manually. I
think the installer is smart enough to determine the drive is CD-RW, so it
sets up the SCSI emulation for you. It just doesn't change fstab to reflect
this. Try (assuming you want to mount it on /mnt/cdrom2):

mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2

You may have unmount /mnt/cdrom2 first. If this works, change the following
line (again assuming fstab is trying to mount your CD-RW on
/mnt/cdrom2/):

mnt/cdrom2 /mnt/cdrom2 supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom2 0 0

to:

/mnt/cdrom2 /mnt/cdrom2 supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/scd0 0 0

You are changing the "dev=" portion to point at "/dev/scd0".

Hope this helps.

Re: [newbie] Please Help! Unable to mount Yamaha CRW4416E (readonly!) in Mandrake 7.0

2000-01-22 Thread Tom Barraza

Thanks Richard, I seem to have solved my problem a little while ago,
and here's how I did it:

1) I edited the /etc/conf.modules file and took out the 2 lines
   dealing with SCSI emulation:

alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
...
post-install supermount modprobe scsi_hostadapter
...

2) I then edited my /etc/lilo.conf file and took out the line that
  also dealt with SCSI emulation:

 ...
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hda11
append="hdc=ide-scsi"-- Took this line out!
read-only

3) I ran lilo -v (as root) to update the boot record
4) When I rebooted, some auto-hardware detection program complained
about me disabling the Yamaha CR4416E, so I chose to have it keep
the existing configuration, but not warn me in the future about it
being disabled (or something to that effect!)

Now I am able to mount either of my CDROM drives at will from the KDE
Desktop!

What still bothers me, however, is that I am now getting those pesky
messages that I got in RedHAt 6.1 in the /var/log/messages file:

Jan 22 18:45:04 fiend kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady

Anybody got any clues on what's going on wrong here? Is this drive still too new
for Linux drivers to have caught up?

Thanks,
Tom

Also alot of the video cards that are "supported" on this list at
Linux-mandrake and
xfree, might not be fully suported with mandrake, or be "fully"
suported. So please
try not to substitute to a lower priced card that it says is compatable.
I know on my
linux systems I have had alot of luck with the Diamond V770, Power Color
TNT2,
i740 (newer xfree though) However I have had a real heck of a time with
the cheaper
sis 6326, and the S3 Trio cards that are said to be supported. The power
Color tnt2
cards only cost me 70ish bucks, and that 32 megs and it looks sharp.

As well as a link on that page to XFree86 site

Look up the various video cards on the list's and you
will see that The ATI 128 Rage chipset does not have
support yet, I am not sure which Diamond card you
have, but they have been very supportive in the past
regarding Linux, You might just have a configuration
problem there with the Diamond card. Hope this helps.

[newbie] Please Help! I'm totally lost!

1999-12-29 Thread Joe Brault

I also am trying to get my 3com network card to work. This card is
recognized by linux, but i get this error in my log when I insert it:

localhost kernel: cs: could not allocate 136k memory for cardbus
socket1

3c575_cb: Request IO: out of resources

I am unsure of how to reallocate the memory for this card... I tried what
was mentioned in the pcmcia howto, but this did not help. If anyone has any
insight whatsoever, I would appreciate it! What cards work for all of you
out there? Do I need to get another card? if so, which is the best? I
appreciate any and all help with this matter, I am growing quite frustrated.
Thanks in advance for your time!

TreyPeanut Linux is a derivative of Slackware and is only 48 megs to
download from the web site. It is installable from a directory in your
windows partition and only requires a floppy to complete the
installation. The directions for installation are quite detailed.

If yer using a distro that supports RPM just grab the rpm file and type:

rpm -Uvh rpmfilename. . .it will setup and do all the config stuff itself. .
.then jut run gaim and proceed as normal. . .

[newbie] Please help with installation...

1999-06-16 Thread Anonymous

I am a newbie to this Linux thing. In the past I have used Win95, which I
feel comfortable with, but now I'am after a better, more stable OS. For this
I chose Mandrake 6.0.

My problem is installation, which I have spent the past 4-5 days trying to
accomplish, before I explain my problem I will give you a brief description
of my system, just in case it is something obvious that's wrong:

Cyrix 6x86 P150+
32 Mb RAM
2.1 Gb HD (master)
420 Mb HD (slave) - with old Windows files on (*.doc, .etc.)
Acer Acerview 33D monitor (14")
Atapi 4x CD-ROM
Soundblaster 16 sound card
56K clone modem
Scanner Interface card
HP Deskjet 690C
Diamond 3D 200 PRO graphics card
 I think that's about it

Anyway, I install virtually all of Mandrake, with a disk partition of 64Mb
swap and the rest native (/) on the 2.1Gb. The 420Mb is called "/dos" with
all my docs and stuff on.

I then configure the rest of the OS - printer, mouse, graphics, etc
After about an hour of installation, the time has come to reboot the
machine, so I take out all boot media... and log in as root.

This is when the problem arises. Sometimes all I get is a nice blue screen
with my cross in the middle - this doesn't go anywhere, so I have to reset,
which completey screws it all up and back to re-installing. Or, I can
get in, change permissions for all to shutdown the machine, logout and then
it crashes, so I have to reset, screwing it up again and back to
re-installing. Or, finally, I can get in and shutdown and then it dies on
me... What to do? It's getting a tad bring now, unfortunately!!

If I have to reset, and lucky enough to get back in, then I'm offered a
different "log-in Window", which doesn't allow me as many options, and I can
never get the original back!!

Could it be a problem with my BIOS? - I'm pretty sure it's set properly.
Hardware problem?
Installation problem?
Should I not boot into X?
A problem with me?!?!?!

I think I've tried everything now.

Cheers,

Andy

Re: [newbie] Please help with Netscape problem

1999-06-13 Thread Jose Alberto Abreu

Jeanette Russo translated thoughts to electrons:

I am afraid I did something to mess Netscape 4.51 up. I uninstalled BitchX
IRC rpm when I was connected to the net because I forgot I was connected. I
was trying to figure out why it was not working. Now I can connect to the
net fine but when I run Netscape it gives me errors like its not connected
 to the net

 The following hosts are unknown.
 home.netscape.com
 home6.netscape.com
 internic.net

Could be a problem with name server.
If your site must use a non-root name server you will need to set $socks_NS
enviroment to point to the appropriate name server.
It may of may not be necessary to set this variable of the socks host.
preference to the IP address of the host in question rather than
 its name

As a matter of fact the same thing happened to me yesterday night when I tried
to install kicq.rpm... I havent been able to fix it either.
I wasnt connected to the net when I tried that, though...
