I have a 233mmx IBM300pl system with 160mb ram and it is running linux and this email went through it to get to this list.. so they work well enough.. I had to use rawrite on the mandrake CD to make a linux boot disk.. (I think the directory on the cd that contains the images is called /images) so in windows, insert the mandrake8.2 CD. browse the cd till you find the directory called dosutils in there is a file called rawritewin.exe run that. when the app comes up, click the browse button next to the image file box and browse to the cdrom and the /images folder, once in there, chose the cdrom.img file. then click the write button with a good blank floppy in your a drive. thats it, put the floppy in, restart the system.. I did that several times with my 300pl, and it always worked for me. The other thing I did was to go to IBM's web site and get the latest bios for the system.. rgds frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Jagpal Singh Sent: Wednesday, 19 June 2002 2:17 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Can't install with 8.2 Micheal, I have at least 64mb for sure. I tried making Ext2 partitions with the Mandrake installer and with Partition Magic 6 in Windows. I've tried using Ext2 partitions as well as ReiserFS partitions using the Mandrake installer. I've tried installing from a CD-RW that I burned from the downloaded ISO, and I've tried installing from a CD-R, even of a different brand. I've tried diagnosing problems with my HD with both Partition Magic 6, and with Norton's Disk Doctor 2001, and there aren't any problems. And Windows has no problems accessing its own partitions, of course. Re: [newbie] Can't install -- more clues
Bruce, Yes, the boot partition starts at roughly 2 GB, and all my Linux partitions live below cylinder 1024. Thanks for bringing that up. I have, perhaps another clue to the problem. I used Partition Magic to look at the Ext2 partitions since my last installation failure, at it said that 2 of the root partition's 4.5 GBs are used. The installation of packages wasn't a psych-out. One other clue: the floppy drive does work when I make a replication disk. So the failure to make the boot disk has nothing to do with the drive itself (although we pretty much expected that). I didn't have this problem when I installed and I just got Mandrake a few days ago. I too have 7.2 and dual-boot with Windows 98. I did my partitions with Diskdrake, but also set up a /usr partition. I just used the drop down menu for filesystems to select ReiserFs for all the partitions except the swap, I had the swap as "Linux Swap." Then I was on my way. I had no message concerning the checking of bad sectors though, just the formatting. I don't think this helps you out much, but at least it gives you a working "control" to compare with... Re: [newbie] Can't install -- more clues
Well, your experience confirms that my plan is possible. That's definitely worth something. This morning I took my daily crack ... at the problem, that is, and DiskDrake complained the partition table was too corrupted! That's strange because In Win98, ScanDisk says nothing, and neither does Norton Disk Doctor, or Partition Magic 6! And I know that PM6 and Norton complain when the partition table is messed up--it happened only yesterday. Maybe that's my problem--I have some strange partition table problem, and only Linux is sensitive enough to speak up about it. That would explain why it couldn't find /dev/hda or the zoneinfo data. Does anyone know how I can fix something like that? Miark - Original Message - From: "Hans N." There are two types of installation. One is for the network install and the other is the workstation install. If i remember right, you su to root, do the the install with a /net or something option. After that you login as a user and do the local install which copies roughly 2 Mb of data. It should work fine after that... Re: [newbie] can't install x-windows....rest of computer is f(*ed up!
try typing: startx if that doesn't take you into a GUI then as root type: Xconfigurator this will take you into the x setup. After you get everything configured and tested there will be an option to allow you to startx automatically Eunice Thompson - Original Message - From: "Paul John Kiener" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 02, 2000 5:25 AM Subject: [newbie] can't install x-windowsrest of computer is f(*ed up! hello, can anyone help me with this problem. 1st, i tried to install linux. i had the opportunity to have linux take over my whole computer, since i ended up formatting everything. so i had autoallocate allocate and create the partitions in the linux setup. then, i installed it. after installing the packages, i reached the part where it said it was going to install x-windows. so i waited. then the screen turned black for like 2 seconds, then it went to a screen full of gray x's. i shutdown the comp. rebooted, and it started in the mandrake dos type thing where it asks for my localhost login. after that, all i get is this prompt... [paul@localhost paul]$ and from there i don't know what to do. i tried to re-install linux over again to setup x-windowsbut no avail either. help please! God bless! peace! RE: [newbie] Can't Install
If you have your CD set up on the IDE channel, either Master or Slave on Channel 0 or 1, Mandrake -SHOULD- detect it. Note however that there are a few "generic" CD_ROM's which do not identify themselves as such. Mandrake will be unable to detect these as CD devices. This is a problem with the hardware, NOT with Mandrake, as the device is not identifying itself as a CD-ROM... This sounds like what you are seeing... -JMS -Original Message- From: Higgs, Derek (Derek)** CTR ** [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, May 08, 2000 12:34 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] Can't Install Hi, I am new to the world of Linux. I just purchase LINUX-Mandrake 7.0 deluxe and it tells me to install from the floppy. I am attempting to setup my machine to duel boot(Linux / Win 98). It does not recognize my cd rom and I can't go any furhter. It asks me whether I have a SCSI or Other. I choose other because I have and IDE. It then shows me a list of manufactures, my brand is not listed. I chose the last option which said ide... and it asked me for a module. I have a generic brand IDE cd rom (Brand Name: AFREEY Speed: 50X) I have a ASUS motherboard Pent III 550mhz with 128mg ram. Your immediate help will be greatly appreciated. Re: [newbie] Can't install Mandrake 7.0
I don't have a solution, however I just wanted to say that I had the same error when trying to boot of the CDROM. However when I made boot disks and used them it worked fine. This is with ISO image 7.0. Re: [newbie] Can't install with giant Maxtors?
I'll try to do that, I THINK I know how to find the archive. I know I don't have this here since I only joined the list a few minutes before sending my email. The goal is to end up with an Apache server providing FTP to the outside world and internet access (proxy server??) and storage space to home machines. What I bought was 2 36.5 gig Maxtor IDE drives which I'm under the impression Linux will RAID together into one redundant 36.5 gig space. These are the master slave on the primary IDE (the only port that supports ATA66). On the secondary port is a CDROM drive that can handle 4 disks as 4 separate drive letters and an LS120 superfloppy drive. The first problem I ran into was the motherboard BIOS wasn't new enough to handle 30 gig drives. That has been fixed now. But Linux can't seem to figure out how to partition those drives. It doesn't matter if I let the installation program try Disk Druid or Fdisk, either way there is an error message (not there long enough to read it, though). It doesn't matter if LBA is on or off and it doesn't matter if I boot from the floppy or the CD, the result is the same. So I guess what I need to know is: 1) Should LBA be enabled or not? 2) Do I need a newer version of Linux? 3) Could the problem be that I'm not using a REAL floppy drive? -- Windows: 32 bit graphical interface for a 16 bit patch for an 8 bit operating system written for a 4 bit processor by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com -- Windows: 32 bit graphical interface for a 16 bit patch for an 8 bit operating system written for a 4 bit processor by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.
