Here's the error I'm getting (I've tried several jpackage mirrors with

Is this a problem with the mirrors or can I do something different?

 Thanks.

Start with urpmi.removemedia -a and start over from scratch. The media
additions that are copied below are what I'm using. They work. That's the
best I can say about anything related to Mandrake mirrors today. I added PLF
at the bottom so you just skip that one when you copy and paste if your
choice has worked. I just like to give a complete answer. (-;

The tree structure for the mirrors has changed again and that's causing
aggravation and confusion. It should, I sincerely hope, be temporary. This
will get you the jpackage list and whatever you wanted to install:

urpmi.addmedia main
ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandrakelinux/devel/cooker/i586/media/main

with media_info/hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia contrib

with media_info/hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia jpackage
ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandrakelinux/devel/cooker/i586/media/jpackage

with media_info/hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/linux/plf/mandrake/cooker
with hdlist.cz

The reason I'm pushing you to the proxad mirror is simple, I know it's
current. The rest I ain't so sure about.

Have fun!

grief. I'll try an update and see what I get...

You're right so I went and looked. The hdlist3.cz and the media info sub

tough, doesn't it.

I told you there were mirror problems at present. What I don't understand is
why the head honchos at Mandrake always make these changes sometime during
the AlphaBetaRC part of the release cycle. It's almost as though all the
please test and report any bugs blah blah blah is nothing but crap. How can
you test what you can't access for installation?

It's been a rather frustrating day, sorry. I don't mean to unload on you.

You could always download the entire jpackage directory contents and install
whatever parts you need manually. You'll still be able to use urpmi in the
directory, you just won't have a graphical connection to read through the
package list. There's a way to generate an hdlist in a directory full of
packages so that you could use it as a local source, but it escapes me at the
moment. Hold on:

In the directory containing the rpms, I would do:

 genhdlist ./

I suppose that's the best I can do for now, sorry again.

Re: [newbie] Can't install/use WebDAV.

 Where is your conf file?

Here is the lines that I insert in my httpd2.conf:

### ==
LoadModule dav_module modules/mod_dav.so

DAVLockDB /dav/DAVLock

Directory /dav
 DAV On
 AuthType Basic
 AuthName WebDAV Server
 AuthUserFile /dav/.DAVlogin
/Directory
### ==

Your dav directory is world writable, right?

well, I type 'ps -ef | grep httpd' and see the service running under
'apache' user...
so, I made this:

mkdir /dav
chmod -R 775 /dav
chown -R apache.apache /dav

And I create the password file:

htpasswd -c /dav/.DAVlogin flavio

(flavio is the user running Calendar on win98 client station).

Made this, I try to publish my calendar but no file is writing in /dav
directory...

and I don't know how to test if my WebDAV server is running

I put a single txt file in /dav directory and try to see it on my win98
client station like this:
http://192.168.200.50/dav/test.txt but I got a 'page not found' error...

Can you see something wrong ?

Thank you again.

You don't need to create a mount point or format a partition for
mod_dav, it will just work with Apache once you have davfs and mod_dav

Ok. Made.

Naw, you don't need a virtual host unless you want one. Since you don't
have any restrictions set, you should just be able to publish the
calendar by specifying the IP and directory from Mozilla Calendar. For
example, http://192.168.200.50/dav/calendar.ics .

Note that if you ever plan on using webDAV with Windows and connecting
via Windows Explorer (network connection) that it will not work if you
require authentication. There is something broken in MS's
implementation (surprise); there are a few hacks/workarounds out there,
but I decided not to bother. I've also found that webDAV works a lot
better with Apache 1.3 compared to 2.x.

Here's a pretty good site for walking you through the process:

well, a 'workaround' is to copy the contents of the installation CDs to
/usr/src/mdkcd1, etc. then change the path in the MCC to your HD instead
of the CDs.

this is not a solution, obviously, you should not experience this

try in a terminal as root:

RE: [newbie] Can't install with 8.2

2002-06-18 Thread Franki

I have a 233mmx IBM300pl system with 160mb ram and it is running linux and
this email went through it to get to this list..
so they work well enough..

I had to use rawrite on the mandrake CD to make a linux boot disk..
(I think the directory on the cd that contains the images is called /images)
so in windows, insert the mandrake8.2 CD.

browse the cd till you find the directory called dosutils in there is a
file called rawritewin.exe
run that. when the app comes up, click the browse button next to the image
file box and browse to the cdrom and the /images folder, once in there,
chose the cdrom.img file.

then click the write button with a good blank floppy in your a drive.

thats it, put the floppy in, restart the system..

I did that several times with my 300pl, and it always worked for me.

The other thing I did was to go to IBM's web site and get the latest bios
for the system..

You have either a bad CD or a bad drive or a little combination of both.
The could not uncompress second stage RAMdisk is a dead giveaway.

My webserver/mailserver IS a PC300GL desktop with the CL5465 embedded on
board and memory is autodetected successfully with 8.2 and 8.1 and both
install successfully on it. It also serves as printserver, so I am

So I tried to install glibc-2.2.2-10.i386.rpm but received an error that
I

When I tried to install glibc-common-2.2.2-10.i386.rpm I received the

I did a rpm -qa| grep glibc and saw that glibc-2.1.3-16mdk is

Re: [newbie] Can't install -- more clues

2001-03-03 Thread Miark

Anthony and all,

During installation of 7.2

1) I want to make a boot disk, but it fails:

   An error occurred, mkbootdisk failed

2) When I try to install lilo or grub, it fails:

   Installation of bootloader failed
   The following error occurred:
Fatal: open /dev/hda: No such file or directory

3) When I test X, it fails, saying:

(WW) xf86ReadBIOS: Failed to open /dev/mem
   (No such file or directory)

4) On occasion, lilo will load, but when I boot to
   Linux, it says, Kernel panic:

Unable to mount root fs on 03:05

I'm not sure what 03 is, but I have to assume 5
refers to hda5 which is mounted at /.

But everything up to this point in the installation pretends
to work, including the installation of all the packages.

I've tried reputedly, about a dozen attempts so far.

I tried making Ext2 partitions with the Mandrake installer
and with Partition Magic 6 in Windows.

I've tried using Ext2 partitions as well as ReiserFS
partitions using the Mandrake installer.

I've tried installing from a CD-RW that I burned from the
downloaded ISO, and I've tried installing from a CD-R, even
of a different brand.

I've tried diagnosing problems with my HD with both
Partition Magic 6, and with Norton's Disk Doctor 2001, and
there aren't any problems. And Windows has no problems
accessing its own partitions, of course.

I've tried wiping the mbr so that lilo or grub get a clean
shot at installation (although not in conjunction with these
other things).

If my computer had a neck, I would choke it to death.

What is going on?!!

So what exactly is the problem? I don't think ReiserFS
filesystems do bad
sector checking. At least I don't remember getting asked
that when I
formatted my Linux partitions to that. Have you tried jsut
checking the swap
 partition and then moving on?

Nobody has even guessed at my problem yet, but I have
more
clues that may help you help me. Here's the full
scenario:

  I'm installing 7.2 for dual-boot with Win98. When I get
to
DiskDrake in set-up, I choose to make the three
following
  partitions:

   * Logical, ReiserFS, 5 GB, mounted at /
   * Logical, ReiserFS, 1 GB, mounted at /home
   * Logical, Linux swap, 500 MB

It says that it's formatting the Reiser partitions, but
it
only says that for about 2 seconds. Then, when it asks
which
partitions on which to check for bad sectors, it _only_
  lists the swap partition.

If I go back and make the Reiser partitions Linux
native,
then everything is fine. Well, it's as close to fine as
it
  will get.

Now I remember somebody on this list saying that what I
want
to do is possible. Were they wrong? How do I implement
  ReiserFS and make it work?

Re: [newbie] Can't install -- more clues

Bruce,

Yes, the boot partition starts at roughly 2 GB, and all my
Linux partitions live below cylinder 1024.

Thanks for bringing that up.

I have, perhaps another clue to the problem. I used
Partition Magic to look at the Ext2 partitions since my last
installation failure, at it said that 2 of the root
partition's 4.5 GBs are used. The installation of packages
wasn't a psych-out.

One other clue: the floppy drive does work when I make a
replication disk. So the failure to make the boot disk has
nothing to do with the drive itself (although we pretty much
expected that).

Re: [newbie] Can't install -- more clues

2001-03-02 Thread Miark

Well, your experience confirms that my plan is possible.
That's definitely worth something.

This morning I took my daily crack ... at the problem, that
is, and DiskDrake complained the partition table was too
corrupted! That's strange because In Win98, ScanDisk says
nothing, and neither does Norton Disk Doctor, or Partition
Magic 6! And I know that PM6 and Norton complain when the
partition table is messed up--it happened only yesterday.

Maybe that's my problem--I have some strange partition table
problem, and only Linux is sensitive enough to speak up
about it. That would explain why it couldn't find /dev/hda
or the zoneinfo data.

Does anyone know how I can fix something like that?

formatted my Linux partitions to that. Have you tried jsut checking the swap
partition and then moving on?

Nobody has even guessed at my problem yet, but I have more
clues that may help you help me. Here's the full scenario:

 I'm installing 7.2 for dual-boot with Win98. When I get to
DiskDrake in set-up, I choose to make the three following
 partitions:

  * Logical, ReiserFS, 5 GB, mounted at /
  * Logical, ReiserFS, 1 GB, mounted at /home
  * Logical, Linux swap, 500 MB

It says that it's formatting the Reiser partitions, but it
only says that for about 2 seconds. Then, when it asks which
partitions on which to check for bad sectors, it _only_
 lists the swap partition.

If I go back and make the Reiser partitions Linux native,
then everything is fine. Well, it's as close to fine as it
 will get.

Now I remember somebody on this list saying that what I want
to do is possible. Were they wrong? How do I implement
 ReiserFS and make it work?

I think that these are part of the XFree86-libs package.
If you did not install X from rpm, then rpm will not find them, if you

Since you seem to actually have all of the dependencies, you could try

Dear List,

I'm hoping some kind soul will help me with this... I'm a Mac
user so keep it simple;-)))

I'm attempting to install Mandrake 7.0 on an old Compaq.
I start up with the boot floppy that came with the Mandrake pack,
I also have CD disk one in the CD drive.

The machine boots on the floppy Ok.
It then says:
boot:
Loading CDrom.rdz..
Loading vmlinuz...
(wait)
Initializing CD rom
In second stage install
(wait)
I am then asked to choose a language
(I choose Uk English and hit return)
I then choose the 'recommended install' and hit return
I then choose to 'Install' rather than 'Upgrade' and hit return
I then get an error message saying "An error occurred, No
available partitions"

I have not formatted the hard drive yet, I'm expecting to be
given that option in the next window. I am *not* wanting a dual
boot system, Linux only!!

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Yes, run fdisk and delete all existing partitions. Then repeat the steps
you've described. My guess is that your hard drive has a single DOS
partition and LM install doesn't like to overwrite hallowed Windows
ground.

When you ran fdisk did you create any partitions? You need to
have an existing partition table for the LM installer to work from. When you
fdisk you need to create (and set active) a primary partition. You may also
create an extended partition if you like. You need to reboot after running fdisk

I previously installed on the exact same system, but with a different HD.

When I previuosly installed it was on a 2 GB hard drive.

Is there a problem installing with a larger capacity drive???
The 20 GB has no partitions on it. I wiped them all with Dos6.22 Fdisk

There are two types of installation. One is for the network install and the

the install with a /net or something option. After that you login as a user and
do the local install which copies roughly 2 Mb of data. It should work fine

 hello,
can anyone help me with this problem.
1st, i tried to install linux. i had the opportunity to have linux
take over my whole computer, since i ended up formatting everything.
so i had autoallocate allocate and create the partitions in the linux
setup. then, i installed it. after installing the packages, i reached
the part where it said it was going to install x-windows. so i waited.
then the screen turned black for like 2 seconds, then it went to a
screen full of gray x's. i shutdown the comp. rebooted, and it started
in the mandrake dos type thing where it asks for my localhost login.
after that, all i get is this prompt...
 [paul@localhost paul]$
and from there i don't know what to do. i tried to re-install linux
over again to setup x-windowsbut no avail either. help please! God
 bless! peace!

2000-05-08 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

If you have your CD set up on the IDE channel, either Master or Slave on
Channel 0 or 1, Mandrake -SHOULD- detect it.

Note however that there are a few "generic" CD_ROM's which do not identify
themselves as such.

Mandrake will be unable to detect these as CD devices.

This is a problem with the hardware, NOT with Mandrake, as the device is not
identifying itself as a CD-ROM...

This sounds like what you are seeing...

Attempting a first-time installation. The goal is to end up
with an Apache server providing FTP to the outside world and
internet access (proxy server??) and storage space to home
 machines.

What I bought was 2 36.5 gig Maxtor IDE drives which I'm
under the impression Linux will RAID together into one
redundant 36.5 gig space. These are the master slave on
the primary IDE (the only port that supports ATA66). On the
secondary port is a CDROM drive that can handle 4 disks as 4
separate drive letters and an LS120 superfloppy drive.

The first problem I ran into was the motherboard BIOS wasn't
new enough to handle 30 gig drives. That has been fixed
now. But Linux can't seem to figure out how to partition
those drives. It doesn't matter if I let the installation
program try Disk Druid or Fdisk, either way there is an
error message (not there long enough to read it, though).
It doesn't matter if LBA is on or off and it doesn't matter
if I boot from the floppy or the CD, the result is the same.

So I guess what I need to know is:
  1) Should LBA be enabled or not?
  2) Do I need a newer version of Linux?
  3) Could the problem be that I'm not using a REAL
 floppy drive?
