It's not impossible, it has been done, but I really wouldn't recommend it.
It's far from trivial, as there have been major changes. There's the 2.6
kernels instead of 2.4 and udev instead of devfs, for a start - and they are
*big* changes, affecting almost everything. If you have any spare space or
don't mind losing 9.2, make a fresh install, keeping your /home (assuming you
had a separate partition).

I do not understand this. An adsl connection on your windows partition??

When you do an ftp install you boot up your computer with a linux boot disk, and
you must have internet connection at that point. Is that possible in your setup?

Sounds like you really want to do a install from the hd.img already on your
Windows partition. The instructions in my other reply should do fine, and
you can Google for more information if you feel you need it.
I'm still using 9.1 and 9.2 because of some hardware issues with the 2.6
kernel. Remember, 2.6 is on the cutting edge--it is new, and there are still
some things that need to be worked out. A lot of people have no problems
whatsoever, but some do.

The hd.img boot floppy will ask for the location of the source disk for your
Mandrake install. For you it is probably /dev/hda or /dev/hda1 (remember,
Linux looks at partitions differently than Windows, the first partition on
the first hd would be hda1, the second, hda2, etc, and the first on the
second disk would be hdb1, etc.
Then it will ask for the Path to Mandrake, which could be
/dev/hda1/windows/downloads/Mandrake
or whatever.

Be sure all your disks are located in the same directory. Mine is (keep in
mind Linux, not on a Win partition on /dev/hda8)

Hopefully, you won't run into any permission problems with your install files,
and it will go from there. And, defrag Windows before you begin, because you
will be resizing existing partitions during the install, I assume.

And, although a bit dated, this site has a lot of info:

At a guess, you're using Internet Explorer on the Windows box, and it's
a non-standard site, e.g uses the crap MS called javascript .

if this is true you can do several things:

1. set up your browser to masquerade as IE, (Opera is probably the
easiest),
2. download using windows,

and the MOST IMPORTANT

3. contact the owner of the site and complain about their web page not
using standard HTML coding, thereby reducing their consumer base.

Depending on which ftp server software you are using, there will be an
associated conf file in /etc. Assuming you are using proftp, just edit
/etc/proftpd.conf and add a line like this:

DefaultRoot /home/www my-account

Other FTP servers will have similar arrangements. This also chroots you
so that this directory becomes your root directory when using ftp.

Usually, a good ftp client has the possibility to set the startup folder when you use
a specific account or login-profile.
Cute-ftp is one of the clients where you can store this information (remote folder).
I think it's not really necessary to adjust the ftpd config on your server for that.

 Now so sure about WUFtp mate, but you might want to try shutting it down

Don't worry that everything below seems to be about cooker Walt. It was
written (mostly) before Mandrake 9.2 became fact and applies to that more
than a current cooker install anyway. Excerpt below from the page:

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/CookerHowTo

Via Hard Disk or Network with No Floppy or CD-ROM

Some machines nowadays do not have a floppy drive or a cd-rom. How does one do
an installation without either of those. Well thanks to some enterprising
young cookers, We have figured out how to boot the installer from the LILO or
GrUB menu.

 Extract the necessary files from the appropriate floppy image. To do this,
mount the floppy image as a loopback device in your tmp directory and then
copy the appropriate files to your boot directory.
 cd /path/to/hd.img
 mount -t vfat hd.img ~/tmp/ -o loop=/dev/loop3
 cp ~/tmp/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz-hdimg
 cp ~/tmp/hd.rdz /boot
 umount ~/tmp

Make an entry in /etc/lilo.conf if you use LILO or /boot/grub/menu.lst if you
use GrUB

 Example entry for LILO bootloader
 image=/boot/vmlinuz-hdimg
  label=hd-install
  root=/dev/ram3
  initrd=/boot/hd.rdz
  append=ramdisk_size=32000
  vga=791
  read-only

As always, after you have finished editing /etc/lilo.conf, you need to
run /sbin/lilo before your changes take effect.

 Example entry for GrUB bootloader
 title hd-install
 kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz-hdimg root=/dev/ram3 ramdisk_size=32000
vga=791
 initrd (hd0,0)/boot/hd.rdz

 If you want to do the same thing but are installing from an NFS or FTP
source, just use the network.img floppy image instead of the hd.img floppy
image.

Personally I'd recommend setting up ssh and using sftp as a service.
It's safer than running a standard ftp server not even thinking of all the
hassle in getting it securely configured.

After installing and setting up your ssh-server you can access the directories
you want using konqueror, gftp, etc.. or simply scp file.local
URL:/file.remote on the CML.

Good luck,

Yep I would second that. FTP sends user names and passwords in plain text, so
anyone who can capture your log in will own your box. That is why ftp
severs usually run 'chroot' so they can only access specific folders on the
host.

To use ssh all you have to do is install the ssh-server RPM and it will run.
You can then access your computer using ssh or sftp protocols. If you need an
ssh client for Windows try puTTY
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

A very good ssh/sftp client for Linux is konqueror. Just type
fish://host_name/folder in the url line of konqueror and you can access a
remote folder as if it were local. (Prior to 9.2 install the kio_fish RPM)

You can make access to ssh/sftp *totally* secure by generating security keys
so only specific computers can log in. This is described in detail here
http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/openssh.php

to specify /sbin/nologin so they can't log in to your machine as a
regular user.
From proftpd documentation:
http://www.proftpd.org/docs/faq/linked/faq-ch5.html#AEN559
Add to your /etc/proftpd.conf file

Anonymous ~username
AnonRequirePassword off
User username
Group groupname
RequireValidShell off
Directory *
Limit WRITE
DenyAll
/Limit
/Directory
/Anonymous
That lets them log on using whatever username you give and will take an
email addy for a password. They are not allowed to write to any
directory.
The trick is to have the ftp look in a directory that's not in /var/ftp.
You can use another directory as ftp document root, but I think you have
tomount it as that. See
http://proftpd.linux.co.uk/localsite/Userguide/linked/chroot-symlinks.html
for instructions on that.
Thanks a lot. Have a good day.

GFTP is a mess to configure, but it works.
I first connect to the FreeBSD-ftp, then I adjust the settings towards
my own website and I connect.
Then I bookmark my website.
That works.
If I just fill the values in without connecting to another ftp-site, it
does not work.

Do not ask me how this comes.

Now as it works, is a great ftp-client, as good as WS-FTP.

Subject: [newbie] ftp weird server reply error in Mandrake update

In the last couple of days, I have noticed a peculiar difficulty in
using Mandrake Update. I get the following error message on nearly all
packages that I select for updating:

Error during download

There was an error downloading package:

ftp://name of site

Error: ftp weird server reply

Do you want to continue (Skipping this package)

Yes No

This had never happened in the past. Is this due to a change on the
mirror site I have been using, due to the release of 9.1? Or is it a
matter of corruption on my system?

TIA

I suspected as much, but wanted the warm fuzzies of someone else's
opinion. ...weird server reply has got to be almost as cryptic as some
of the M$ error messages I use to get. It would be nice if there was one
extra error trap that said something like Go away! Too much traffic!
Leave me alone for a while! I could handle that.

Thanks, Franki. I can wait.

 before they can log on to only there folders/files
 and not be able to see other users folders/files

The approach I'd take on something like this would be to use what is
called a chroot jail coupled with ssh/scp for access since that's
far safer than simple ftp. That way they can operate in their
environment with a regular shell, but the chroot will keep them from
going into other directories besised their own.

chroot effectively puts the new root == their own home directory and
they shouldn't be able to go up in the tree to traverse to other
files or directories.

Just give them regular home directories using those restrictions.

If you want to create a directory with files for a number of different
users, one way to do it is

1. Create a user for that directory, e.g. share
2. Set file permissions so that group members have read access.
3. For each user you set up, add them to the group share.
BTW, if you only want users to be able to download these shared files,
don't give them a home directory (or set a quota) otherwise they could
fill up your computer with their files!

Just create user as normal, but for login shell, specify /sbin/nologin.
For home directory, I specify /nohome and don't give the user access.

As far as locking the user into an ftp directory, I think that depends on
what you use for your ftp server. With proftpd, I have in
/etc/proftpd.conf:

DefaultRoot /path/to/defaultusers/directory !restrictedgroupname
DefaultRoot /path/to/restrictedusers/directory

I just send non-restricted users to their home directory and restricted
users to another.

Do you have another machine that could function as an NFS server?
That's what I did to get 8.2 installed on a similar laptop (150 mHz,
40mb RAM, 5gb HD).  FTP/HTTP simply aren't available for any version I
looked at if you have less that 48mb RAM. 8.2 runs ok on the machine,
but I'd recommend avoiding KDE and Gnome as they're incredibly slow --
if you need a GUI go with something lighter.

RC2 had big problems with removable storage devices and similar
(extremely wobbly detecting of my Clie), and also with USB hubs
(occasionally both of my hubs were dead on booting, and I was not the
only person with this problem) so the new RC3 is prudent; the kernel has
moved from 2.4.19-7mdk to 2.4.19-13mdk at least in the interim.

I had to reinstall RC2 from scratch in order to begin to install RC3 (so
that RC2 would recognise my external USB CD writer; harddrake2 under RC2

hope they fixed that problem by now.

The RC3 iso's are a cooker snapshot as of late last Fri (Sat. in
Europe). 'RC3' was reported on the install screen then. I don't know
why they took so long to put 'em up unless they at first weren't going
to. There's been some significant problems that appeared late, and a
chunk of updated rpms yesterday. So rather than going Final mid week
it'll probly be Fri. or Sat. with the announcement and release iso's
comin next Mon. At least that's my take of the discussion/activity on
the cooker list. 'Course it depends on whether the current updates fix
the problems.

 BTW, IME, ftp.nluug.nl is fairly reliable, but often lags a day or
even two behind the primary mirror, sunsite. This is a good thing when
some rpms are gettin updated 4 or 5 times a day as was the case for
example with kdebase recently. Now that the updates have settled down
(ie, one a day per updated rpm), you might wanna switch to a more
current mirror.

Two quick and dirty solutions:

1.  Give your users the password for /home/shares;
2. (slightly less dirty solution) Make all your users members of the
share group, then set permissions in /home/share to read+write for group.

I'm running mdk8.2. I HAD my ftp server running OK last night. I came to
ftp into the linux box this morning, no joy. I get a 421 Service not
available error when trying to connect. I get the same result trying to
ftp into the linux box, from the linux box.

The server type is set to inetd in proftpd.conf,

This is my proftpd-xinet file from xinetd.d folder

{
disable = no
socket_type = stream
wait= no
user= root
server  = /usr/sbin/in.ftpd
log_on_success  += DURATION USERID
log_on_failure  += USERID
nice= 10
}

Any suggestions ??

TIA

i think the xinetd processes need restarting after the conf file changes.

I have tried to get ProFTPD running also, with the options you mentioned
here. But alas, to no avail. When I switch from 'standalone' to 'inetd' and
restart things, ProFTPD complains that there is a socket problem:

Starting proftpd: tbird.merlijn - Fatal: Socket operation on non-socket

Any clues? It would be nice to have FTP running again.

2002-03-26 Thread Brian Parish

Hanan,

I'm getting a bit lost here. I thought you had two eth cards. Usual
setup for a static IP DSL system would be something like:

eth0: 192.168.0.1 mask 255.255.255.0
eth1: ip-allocated-by-provider mask whatever-they-say

iptables set up to masquerade through eth0 and allow anything and
everything on eth0, but keep the nasties away on eth1.

Of course eth0 and eth1 could be swapped - nothing special about which
does what as long as the settings are consistent.

Maybe we can just verify that the above is what you want to achieve,
have you post a bunch of config files and see if we can sort it from
there.

1- I lost the connection sharing , the win machine cannot see the internet

2- I CAN ping 192.168.0.1 = linux machine from w2k !!

I also noticed something else ( I noticed this a few days ago ) every time I
change the following line in /etc/hosts file :
192.168.0.1 hanan.myisp.comhanan

to

192.168.0.1 hanan.homelan.com hanan ( chnage the host nam to
reflect the my local lan )

OK - a few point I can clarify, although I can't answer all of them.

Obviously I can't read iptables settings 'cause I couldn't see any
reason why local packets would be rejected. But yes, stopping the
firewall will stop your connection sharing. This is not just a firewall
to keep things out - it also tells IP where to forward packets.

I wonder could you have eth0 listed as a public interface instead of as
a trusted interface. I think that your bastille-firewall.cfg file
should read:

TRUSTED_IFACES=lo eth0
PUBLIC_IFACES=eth1

Perhaps check that first.

Oops - forgot to address the DHCP question.

I should imagine that your eth1 interface would be set to get its
address via DHCP unless you are paying for a permanent address. So this
being the case, yes it will mess with your host name.

DHCP isn't supposed to affect that IP. That IP is by definition a
private network IP.

What you might be mising is that you didn't restart your network
services after modifying /etc/hosts.

A 'kill -1 1' as root should fix that. (Or 'service network restart').

Hanan,

You can find out if it's running with the command (as root):

service bastille-firewall status

If it is and you want to try stopping it:

service bastille-firewall stop

(and of course .start to restart it)

I suspect that this is not the problem however. How are your IP
addresses and subnet masks set up? Oh, and there are much better ways
than FTP - Samba would be the way to go.

 I read a few days ago a post about somebody using FTP to share files in a

 My question is :I would like to use ftp to share files between the 2

 Now, I stopped the tiny firewall from my system ( by allowing everything
 through the firewall, I couldnt find an option to stop it all in all , so i
 just allowed everything ) to see if it is causing this ping problem, but
 still i cant ping !!

 Could there be another firewall running ?
 In /etc/Bastille there are the following files:
 bastille-firewall.cfg
 bastille-firewall.cfg.orig
 bastille-firewall-early.sh*

 how do I know If there is a firewall running ?!?!

From the man page
reget remote-file [local-file]
Reget acts like get, except that if local-file exists and
is smaller than remote-file, local-file
is presumed to be a partially transferred copy of
remote-file and the transfer is continued from the
apparent point of failure. This command is useful

I don't run FTP on mandrake, but on my redhat servers I use proftpd
It should be easy to install. then you have to massage /etc/proftpd.conf.
There are example proftpd.conf files at http://proftpd.org
