It is a GUI that will let you see the shares on the network, and mount them. If you want to mount a share from the command line, then try this as root: mkdir /mnt/samba mount -t smbfs //faster/ /mnt/samba Replave "" with the Windows share name. You can get a list of shares by running "smbclient -L faster". Mikkel -- Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with Ketchup! You may want to create just one directory for moving files between the two systems. You may also have to make some adjustments on the firewall in XP to let Linux connect from inside VMware. I think this is still covered in the VMware documentation. In any case, it is the same as setting up XP to share a directory with other machines in the local network. It also helps if you use the same workgroup name in XT and smb4k. As a test, you should be able to see the directory you have set up from your desktop system when both it, and the laptop are on the same network. If the two machines running Windows can not share files, then Linux running in VMware is probably going to have problems as well. A second way would be to configure Samba under Linux, and have it share out a directory. You would have to use XP to transfere files between this directory and the XP file system. One quick way to set up a directory for sharing is to double-click on the hard drive icon on the desktop, navigate to the directory you would like to share. Right click on it, pick "Properties", and then "Local Net Shating". You will probably have to enter the root password, and enable this. It may also ask to install some packages. Let it. HK I can understand the installer having a problem with this drive. You might be able to do something in the expert mode, but you might also delete some of your data... I would be tempted to back things up, wipe the drive, and start over. Create one partition for Windows, and leave the rest for the installer to play with. Another option would be to add a second drive for Linux. Let Windows keep the first drive, and have the installer install to the second hard drive. (You can download the first 3 CD's from the Internet.) Now, as far as transfering files between Windows and Linux, it depends on how you are running Linux. If you are running it in a VMware window, then you may want to create a share on the windows machine, and use smb4k to map the share on Linux. You can alsu use the mount command from the command line interface, but smb4k is probably going to work better for you at this point. If you are dual booting Windows and Linux on a machine, you can mount the windows partition directly in Linux. In fact, the installer usualy will set this up for you. Diskdrake will also do it for you. If you are using the NT file system, then it will be mounted read only - you can transfere files to Linux, but there are some problems writing to NT file systems. (Has this changed?) There are no problems reading/writing FAT file systems. Depending on the nVidia card you have, 10.1 may work with it out of the box, or you may have to install extra drivers. There have been a lot of messages about this. I don't have personal experence with the cards that require this. As far as your install problems directly to the hardware, instead of installing in VMware, we should be able to work around them. The bit thing is to describe the hardware, and be willing to try a couple of options during install. Most people don't need to do this, but some hardware requires more effort then others... I didn't realize you were running 6.0, but it induces that nostalgic feeling in me. If, by any chance, you are dual-booting Linux and another OS, an easy way to transfer files is to create an extra FAT32 partition in the middle to share files. Most OS's can read and write to FAT32. The frame buffer question is a little hairy, depends on your graphics card, but take a look here : http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/BootPrompt-HOWTO-5.html In order to display a graphical interface Linux uses a X server. That's because Linux was designed as a networked system in the first place. You,ll definitely want one. Mandrake comes with a server from Xorg nowadays (earlier it was XFree86). It's on your CD's. At your command prompt (as root) try : urpmi xorg-x11 h k - Some recommendations : I think you'll need a few applications until you can get to the GUI. Just urpmi the following : slocate (a file database). After install, just (as root) run "updatedb". Then, to find a file, type : "locate ". mc (Midnight Commander). A Norton-like file manager and editor. To display your system, type :"mc". To edit a file, type :"mcedit ". When you have a GUI, you'll need the "drakes". Those are graphical configuration tools. Their names are descriptive, like "userdrake", "menudrake", "keyboarddrake" etc.. You can install them by (as root) : "urpmi --fuzzy drake" and then select the ones you want. (6) 700 mHz, 256meg ram, 20 gig hd, Nvidia Vanta video card, Intel ... hk ball Someone else can help you with the proper configuration of the Nvidia card - from all the messages I have seen, it is "interesting" to configure, but I have not had that "pleasure" yet. You can test your X setup by logging in as a user from the CLI (dos) mode, and typing "startx". This will put you in the GUI mode. I would hold off changing to having Linux start in the GUI mode until after you have X working the way you want it. When you boot in the CLI mode, you can try different X configurations without rebooting. (Unless you manage a configuration that blacks out the screen...)
