 Hi Folks,

Recently I got a problem that I could frequently receive emails, which, I
guess, are supposedly sent to my colleague. Although most of those emails
are spam mails, I believe, it's kinda annoying. Because I don't know
whether this problem comes from? Could anyone tell something by analysizing
the following property from one of those emails. It's a problem of my
Kmail, or my mail server or the guy deliberately sent those emails to me.
What could give me a hint is, my email box does appear in the X-Real-To
 area. Many thanks.

That is also probably the answer to your question. The X-Real-To appears to
be the MTA's header that signals what it received in the mail header as the
target or To: of the mail. The To: line that you see in Kmail is actually
part of the body of the mail message, not the mail header. MTA's use the
header and not the body to direct mail to the recipient so the body piece is
ignored, except perhaps by your Kmail filters and the like.

So, it appears that some spammer has figured out that he can send mail to you
with a fake To: line in the body and try to avoid spam filters in that
fashion. I have had this happen in my system as well with spammers forging
From: lines in the body instead in an attempt to bypass spam filters. Since
my MTA actually filters on the headers, it doesn't work but I do see the
results.

You might want to create another filter and make it filter on the body and
simply dump all messages that appear to be for your colleague.

forwarded message, not so in 10.1. Maybe forwarding is completely broken
 in 10.1

A couple other strange kmail things I noticed this evening. The permissions
for the kmailrc file in ~/.kde/share/config owner as can read/write and group
as forbidden, another odd thing, I think, is that the file type is unknown.
I never did receive a reply in the kdepim list, going to ask on the mail kde
list and see if I get any reply.

If comcast is anything like Earthlink, shouldn't it be

Nope, smtp.comcast.net is correct. I need TLS and CRAM-MD5 to authenticate.

Every time I've had difficulties with anything KDE, I would logoff and
login as root (or do it from the console) and rename the .kde directory
within my home directory so that KDE would rebuild itself; then again,
as well, I also make sure that the /etc/ld.so.conf is up to date and I
run ldconfig to rebuild the lib path cache; generally, it all becomes
happy-dappy again and you can then copy over your KMail prefs and
whatnot to the new .kde directory; at least it's worth a shot, right
mate?

I'm getting confused by the threading here, but in case you missed my post to
the hijacked thread:

Rebooted? I think it may not be kmail--you may have a hardware problem.
Something about kmail may be accessing a specific part of your hd, or using a
specific amount of cpu or memory, or ethernet, and that is the cause of the
crash.
The reason I say this, a few years ago, sometimes when I tried to transfer
files from-or-to one of the computers on my network I would get a spontaneous
reboot. Now, the weird part is, more than one computer was doing this, but
one specific computer was always involved (either it would reboot or the one
being transferred to or from would reboot). After a couple of months of
pulling my hair out, I changed the network card in that machine and the
problem went away!
|
| What is up with that ?? I have never had any problems with Kmail.

Well, any problem I've ever had was cured by deleting my /home/username/.kde
and logging back in.

removed and still no sending. Also I have had the case where whenever
I click on a good message it goes away and becomes blank. I assumed
that may have happened again but since I wasn't having any luck I
removed the blank message and the next one came up good but still
wouldn't send.

I have switched to Evolution. We'll see how it'll work :)

Q1: Does someone 'round here know if there is a way to import my

Q2: What type of folders should I use : maildir or mbox?

Thanks Ron for the suggestion. I will do what you suggest of
course but I am getting around to thinking that because a few
other things appear to have gone walkabout, it might be a good
idea to reinstall Mandrake 10. This is a messy option as
several things have to be installed manually and then the whole
lot will have to be updated using urpmi - will let you know how
 it works out.

 Thanks again

Thanks again Ron. Did a reinstall and the urls and jpgs burst
into life now as before. Still have a lot of tidying up to do
but the main problem is solved.

A friend of mine (in electronics) said that when you solder
connections on the end of a cable and when finished you find you
have forgotten to put a fitting on the cable first, then having
to do it again is penance for not doing it properly in the first
place. This is the price I am paying with Mandrake right now.

The next time (if there is a next time), create a new user and see if
everything works. If so, export your old user's address book to a directory
somewhere safe, and rename your .kde directory in the /home for your old
username. Restart kde and log in as your old username, and everything will
probably work when kde creates a new .kde for your old username. If it does,
remove your new user. Be aware you will lose all your kde settings (hence
the backup of your address book--you can backup and maybe recover your mail,
also).

Hoyt, the updatedb process updates the slocate database with all of the files
that are on the system. However, that usually only runs once per night so if
the file has been removed and updatedb has not run yet, slocate will show an
improper location for a file that is not there.

Run updatedb as root from CLI and then do a locate kmail and you might find
that it is not on your system.

There is another thing that I have discovered by accident. If you configure

there is a space behind them when you put the cursor there. the rules will
not work.

Make certain that the cursor in the address or words is directly at the last

I couldn't understand why a couple of rules didn't work, and that was the
problem. Remove the space and the filters worked.

Maybe this will help.

 Yes I have two
 klocate and kio_locate
You will need to compile klocate yourself, but kio_locate is available in
 contrib.

kio_locate allows you to search by typing
 locate:/string
in the url line of konqueror.
It uses slocate as its backend which means that it will only find files
that have been indexed in the slocate database. The job to do the indexing
runs at 4am each morning, so if you switch your computer off at night you
will need to install anacron to run the job for you in the morning. I have
 a write up here
 http://www.jennings.homelinux.net/modules.php?name=Newsfile=articlesid=7

After you install slocate and kio_locate packages run updatedb as root to
initialise the database for the first time.

 derek

If I can add to my own post.
I appear to have already made an RPM of klocate
I did it for 9.1, but it works on 9.2 as well.
It is available in the download area of my site.

Also the syntax for using kio_locate is :-
locate:/string/

Plus I wanted to emphasise how useful it is for desktop users to install
anacron. Without anacron to run jobs which a server would do in the middle of
the night your logs and your tmp folder will become huge, and lots of
necessary housekeeping will not get done. The downside is that anacron will
cause the hard drive to go berserk 15 minutes after you boot your computer.
Do not panic it isn't broken.

Never done this, but would assume that you make directory and place

Assuming that each is a .vcf file?

I know I imported my Lotus Organizer address book, but it was over 2
years ago, and I can't remember how I did it. I know I messed around
trying formats, though - .csv was one possibility, but I can't
remember whether it works. I hadn't a clue what I was doing, which
makes it harder to recall - but I think there were a couple of very
similar-sounding formats, one of which worked and the other didn't.
Also, I know I tried the different kaddressbook import formats, by
exporting to a .csv file and importing list, and by exporting to a
vcard. It may be that one that worked, because I also use GnomeCard,
and I think that used vcard as an import.

Sorry for rambling on - just thinking aloud and hoping that something
here gets you on the right lines. Not terribly helpful, I'm afraid,
except to say that importing does work, once you find the best format
for compatibility.

If you just want to be able to receive your Yahoo mail using Kmail, download a

push it to your local mail folder, or you can rig it to send through a local

Used to happen to me all the time with kmail. 2 isp's and never in the right place at
the right time.

I switched to Sylpheen-Claws. It allows me to change the from in flight. Saves
bunches of re-typing and unclogging kmail out queue.

Not sure if it is applicable or not, but I think I figured out why my messages
were not going out to the Mandrake list. I was sending them out through smtp
to my local Postfix server and from there relaying through my ISP's mail
server. Mandrake must have the UCE protections on their server turned on and
for some reason, it is rejecting mail from me, probably because my local
server is not pushing messages from a fully qualified domain with an MX.

I solved it by creating a second identity along with a second outgoing account
that sends mail direclty to my ISP's mail server. I associated the second
outgoing account with the second identity and made it the default for the
mailing list. Now my mail goes through.

If you are using a local mail server and none of your mail goes out, it is
possible that your ISP has turned off Port 25 on your network and won't allow
you to originate mail from your connection. Earthlink does this. I have to
relay mail through the ISP (smarthost) or else it does not get delivered.

BTW, if my failures to mail to the list are due to UCE controls, Mandrake has
it configured poorly. They should be sending bounces back to me but instead
are simply dropping the messages.

I prefer Mutt because it's easier on my eyes and hands. I run it using
rxvt, which has a black background with white text. Plus you can customize
all your colors using your muttrc and vimrc. It's also sweet to do mail
without ever touching the mouse.

My major obstacle was learning how to delete lines quickly in vi. If you
don't know the basics of vi, Mutt might annoy you.

My set up works like this: fetchmail gets mail from my isp and brings
it to my box, procmail delivers the mail to my different folders.

The basic commands I use in Mutt are

d delete message
ctrl-d delete thread
c change folder/mailbox
S send message to spam folder
m write new mail
r reply
f forward

I'm happy to help you learn to use Mutt, just let me know what you're
interested in learning and doing with it.
