[newbie] Reinstallation Help Required
Hi Folks I have finally got my mitts on a replacement 80gb Hdd for this linux machine, MDK10. However, before I splash ahead I'd like some advice and stuff 1. It's going to be dual boot so I'd need to install the Win98se first (in a 20gb partition) and then install Mdk telling it to leave the 98 partition right? This will assume that Mdk will sort it's own partitions up right. I'd like to keep the personal files on another partition, is that feasable or is it worth just leaving MDK to get on with it! 2. Samba. Assuming I want to have a samba shared area do I need to create that as a seperate drive?? 3. For keeping all my mail folders and everything is it OK to install the new OS then move the info from the old hard drive to the right place on the new hard drive?? Or do I have to do something else. I know when I last backed up the mail folders k3b changed all the dots to underscores :( Windows had problems recognising some files and that went a bit haywire for a bit. 4. is there anything else anyone here things I should do before the transfer?? Cheers, Elwyn Awaiting your help before I proceed :) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com
[newbie] Dual Booting..
Hi Folks I've had a look around but I can only see options for setting up a dual boot system from scratch. I'd like to be able to just add windows to this machine I've got a 25gb Hdd in this machine, with linux but I'd like to put 10gb or so aside to put Windows 98 on... I know it's pushing it fine, but it's only for games (hangs head) so I can play them networked... I'm going to give CrossOffice a go for one of them TIA Elwyn Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

Nothing like doing to improve the learning. You really should be able to put the drive in the new motherboard and boot it up. Linux is really good about adjusting to new hardware. You may have to tweak a few things that load out of /etc/modprobe.conf (lan cards, soiund cards, etc.), but most of the motherboard stuff should be recognized and the appropriate drivers be installed automatically. Thanks :) Most of it has gone through OK. When it shuts down it tries to unmount the old network card, which isn't installed anyway, and I can't find it in the configs :( Normally I would be happy to leave it at that... But a machine I was going to use for games has, er, keeled over. Awaiting advice from here Tried backing up my mail directory and K3b made all the leading dots to be underscores?! Huh? Do I need to put anything special in to K3b to get it leave the dots in, or is that an impossibility?? Cheers, Elwyn Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Moving System / Upgrading.... Help!
Aftenoon :) The time has come. I am finally in a position (technically) to upgrade this computer (Mandrake 10 on a P2-300mhz PC (384mb ram, 25gb Hdd, CRRW) to the chassis of an AMD1300 (384mb ram, the rest transfers over). Just need a bit of guidance and advise before I continue... Please :) Part 1. Now. I heavily use Kontact, Konqueror, Kopete, and occasionally Mozilla. I'm working at backing up and moving as much as possible into a storage area (hard drive or CD) while I do the change. What else have I missed? All personal files will be moved over to storage anyway that I can. But I don't want to lose any email. Obviously the filters will change anyway, and I'll have to setup spamassassin again! Part 2. Spec. The following spec is the new machine. Can anyone see any problems that may present itself ahead of time. It's about a year old, but all should be recognisable hardware by now (Please!) Right. I seem to be getting somewhere. I have no idea why this is happening, but the Message Body is closing up between the message list and the message structure leaving just a thick grey line with 6 dots in the middle. When the MB is back, with the ML at the top and MS at the bottom this grey line is half the thickness with three little dots in the centre of this line top and bottom. [newbie] Downloading proper Nvidia driver file
Hello: Recently my video card died, and I replaced it with a 32Mb DDR Nvidia Ge Force 2GTS. My hard drive is partitioned, so installing the proper drivers for my windows portion was uneventful. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about my linux partition. When I boot up in linux, I can only get the console (terminal) mode, in runlevel 3. So I need to install the drivers in linux as well. Question is, it is not clear to me, which is the correct file. I have installed Mandrake 8.0 with kernel 2.4.3 (i.e. the standard installation of mandrake power pack edition). The options in the nvidia site are: the UP kernel, the enterprise kernel, or the smp kernel. Any ideas which is the file I should d/l, or at least how to find out? Also, I don't play video games in my system, is there by any chance some kind of generic driver I can install, which was included with the original powerpak package? Thanks in advance. Re: [newbie] Samba question - making shares invisible
Hello: Have you tried the veto files command? I have not used it, but the book I have has a description for it, which you might find helpful: veto files: Contains a list of file and directory names that are marked by Samba as not visible and cannot be accessed by users. Entires in the list are separated by the / character, and the ? and * wildcard characters can be used. For example, to veto access to Windows executables files on a file share use veto files = /*.exe/*.com/*.bat/. If the case-sensitive parameter is false, Samba will veto files regard to case. Hopefully, this command can help you solve your problem. Good luck... Seems like it's all or nothing, which is not really very clever at all. What we need is a hide unavailable shares = true/false switch for smb.conf or something like that. [newbie] Pine/Postfix/Sendmail
Hello: Thanks for the advice regarding the installation of Pine in my system. I have the program up and running at the moment, but with a couple of quirks, which I would like to discuss. 1. I am running pine 4.30 under lm8.0, using a PIII 800mhz chip with 384megs of RAM. 2. Is there some kind of relationship between postfix and sendmail? For some reason, both programs/scripts are installed in my system. As it is, I thought I was only using postfix and I was gettting ready to remove sendmail, but shied away when there were several references to postfix in man sendmail. So do I need to keep sendmail or can I remove it? 3. Currently, I am executing the following commands: fetchmail (from user) postfix start (from root) pine (from user) Is the sequence correct, or for that matter, does the sequence matter? 4. Now the really squirely part. The return address on emails I send out, is really, really messed up. How can I fix it? It should read [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead it reads dsimon9@localhost [EMAIL PROTECTED]. The casa-coqui.com domain is parked at earthlink, and I am using an alias at their web site to re-direct emails to [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To make matters a bit more interesting, the only way I can get emails to be delivered properly to Pine is by setting personal-name in its' config file to dsimon9@localhost. I was looking through the main.cf file, and there are a couple of settings (myhostname and mydomain), which might address the issue, but these are universal settings (or so I think). If these are the proper settings, to what value should they be set? In my user's .fetchmailrc file, I have the setting set postmaster dsimon9. Thanks in advance for the help. Re: [newbie] File/Printer Sharing with Windows
Hello: I believe Samba is the answer to your question. There are how-to's around explaining its' installation, but I ended up buying a book in the subject. It walked me step by step on configuring Samba properly, and more importantly, it had some very good trouble shooting advice. It also described many, if not all the options available. Among them, its' ability to allow a linux client to send a print request to a winbox. Now, in my case, I have my printers connected to my linbox, but I will quote from the book: It is also possible to use UNIX client machines to access printer shares installed on windows servers. This is achieved by adding a printer definition to the /etc/printcap file and configuring it to send all output through the smbclient program. All this work is done through a shell script that comes with Samba called smbclient. So there is hope. If you are interested, the name of the book is Special Edition Using Samba by Richard Sharpe with Tim Potter and Jim Morris, published by QUE. ISBN: 0-7897-2319-0. Good luck. I also must be able to print from my Linux box to a printer connected to a Windows machine on the network. Someone suggested I look at Samba, but I'm having trouble finding how to install it. I'm pretty much a total newbie on Linux, so maybe some general help in this area would be helpful. What I have read about Samba so far seems to say that it is used for sharing files coming in and printers that are attached to the Linux machine, but I need two-way file sharing and the only printer is connected to a Windows machine and can not be moved. Will Samba do what I want or do I need to look elsewhere? Setup: two machines running Windows ME and one machine running Mandrake Linux 8.0 (the Power Pack boxed set if that matters), on a standard ethernet network connected through a NetGear RT314 router. The printer, a HP LaserJet 5p, is connected directly to one of the Windows machines and is shared for all machines on the network to use. All machines are also connected to the Internet through the router, which is connected to a 3Com 'tailfin' cable modem on a 768K/128K pipe. [newbie] Bastille adventure
Hello: Setting up the bastille firewall is turning into an adventure. Although I pretty much having it do what I want, there are some nagging issues I am hoping somebody can assist me. 1. Background info: Running LM8.0 in a dell 4100 series pc using an 800 mhz pIII processor with 384meg of RAM. 2. Most annoying: I keep loosing my lan connection to my win box. I will have everything running (meaning my lan, the firewall, and my internet connection) pretty good. I will then walk away from the computer, and come back, say an hour later. When I return, I can no longer access the c drive in my win box. If I try, I get a input/output error. To get it back, I must shut down the firewall, unmount and remount the c drive and restart the firewall (by firewall I mean Bastille). FWIW, I don't loose my samba connection. I suspect the firewall, because if the firewall is down, and I leave for 2 hours or more, the network is just fine when I return. I have checked the bastille-firewall.cfg file and I don't see anything involving some kind of network time out variable. Could it be related to one of the icmp variables? 3. Not so annoying: Thekernel modules to masquerade option in InteractiveBastille has the default setting of ftp raudio vdolive. To the list I added irc. When I load bastille-firewall I get the error messages could not find ip_nat_raudio and ip_nat_vdolive. I searched in my system for both files (used the command find / ip_nat_raudio* -print) and I could not find them. Any ideas where they might be? Either in my system or on some web page? I assume ip_nat_raudio is for realplayer. I have been able to do a workaround by dedicating a couple of ports to real player. Imho, it is not the best solution, but it should do until I am able to find the nat file for it. I have no idea what is vdolive? Again, if somebody can suggest where I might find it, I would appreciate it. 4. Not annoying but still: I use IRC and in order for the servers to identify my client, I must leave port 113 open. Is there a way where I can shut down the port after the server has identified my client? I had to install identd in my system for the i.d. process to work properly. Hello: Thank you all. I went ahead and changed the setting in interactivebastille. Not sure what had to be done next, but I ended up having to reboot in order get the change to kick in. Is it suppose to work this way? In any case, the issue is not an issue any longer. But something else has come up, which I think is also due to the firewall. Before installing the firewall I was able to access the hard drive on my winbox (I have a two pc lan. One pc is a dedicated winbox, the other is a dual boot winbox/linux. I am referring to the dedicated winbox). After the installation I cannot access it as a standard user. I can reach it as root, but more interestingly(troublesome), even as root I can't change the permissions for it. Any suggestions??? Thanks again... [newbie] iptables
Hello: Toda my linux box would act as the internet gateway to the lan. In the process, I found out mandrake also installed iptables. I now understand a firewall must be installed for masquerading, don't know why, but it has to. Now, I have been trying to figure out how to use iptables and I am truly confused. What in the world is a chain? I read the man file and the how-to, but either I am being a bit dense, or the subject matter is difficult. I have used firewalls in windows, specifically, conseal, but I am in need of help. I found a script called iptables in my etc/init.d directory. Is this script suppose to be moved to the etc/sysconfig directory? I have read from this list, about a program called bastille. Would bastille be an easier program to use and would I have to remove iptables before installing bastille? If so, how do you go about removing iptables without affecting your masquerade? In a way iptables seems to be what I am looking for, which is a firewall executed from the terminal mode, but I would also like to have the ability of seeing who/what is probing my system. Does iptables has this ability? Thanks in advance. Regards, Dexter Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] Disconnect every 24 hours
Hello: I have a peculiar problem. I leave my pc pretty much connected to the internet 24/7. Since installing LM8.0, it will disconnect every 24 hours, almost to the second. To get around it, I have configured my dial-up to re-dial when disconnected. At first I suspect there is something in the cron files, which is causing this event. There is one directory called cron.daily. Re: [newbie]Dialling out problem
Hello: Thank you everybody for the quick response. The ifconfig eth0 down has solved my immediate problem, but it does not address my overall issue. Which is fine, since at the time I just wanted to get back to square one and start over. I have two pc's at home. Both of them run windoze 98se, and they are both configured via a LAN for file and printer sharing. In one of my two pc's I have partitioned my hdd and installed LM8.0. I have been hearing of Linux for at least a couple of years and had wanted to give it a shot. I am now trying to configure the Linux partition to re-establish my LAN. So bascially, I am talking about one Win98se box (Linksys nic), connected, via a Linksys switch, to my linux box(Linksys nic). For the most part I use my linux pc as my main interface to the internet (a whopping 28.8 connection speed via modem). Whether each box accesses the internet separately or they both use my connection via the unix box iis immaterial to me. Whichever method seems the most practical will be the method I will use. The other pc is used mostly by my wife to check email and for work. I also use it as a place to keep my back up files. So my main interest would be to have the two pc's connected for file and printer sharing (both printers are currently attached to the linux box). I read the documentation and concluded the Samba software was the answer to my questions. Let me digress for a line or two. While installing LM it looked to me like the nic was recognized and it was using the tulip driver. I obtained the information from the Mandrake Control Center (MCC). I Assumed (which in retrospect, might have been a mistake), since LM recognized my nic that I was set to run in Samba. Well, I read the instructions for Samba. I installed the proper files from the LM8.0 cd rom, I made the recommended changes in the smb.conf file, and then executed the smb command (./smb start). When the command was executed, two lines showed up on my terminal each ended with the word ok. So I was all excited about it. I be the big kahuna, I know what I am doing. Well, the celebration was short lived. I went to the windoze box and network neighborhood would not recognize the existence of my linux. I check the back of my linux box. The nic has 4 led in the back. When it is working properly (in windows), three of the 4 lights will be on at all times, and the fourth one will light up when the machine is active in the lan. When I checked the light status, only two of the lights were on. I have tried several things and none have worked. I realize I need to set up a p/w for the satellite windows box, but when I log into windows, it does not ask for a password. And is that the password the samba is seeking when trying to connect to the windows box? I also realize the need to set up a user in the linux box which matches the name of the windows system. I am just a bit fuzzy as how to go about it. My windows box is named Jean. So does it mean, I must set up a p/w in the Jean machine when it first boots up, set a user in linux by the name of Jean, assign it a p/w, and then have both p/w to be the same? Am I clear on this, or am I off base? I also thought maybe my nic was not configured. That is when I went into MCC and tried to configure it. As I retraced my steps, I now realize I was configuring it to be my internet connection, which was a blatant mistake on my part. To make matters worse, I set it up with a static ip of 192.168.1.127(which I suspect threw my internet connection for a loop). Fortunately, I was saved from myself by the ifconfig command. But now, what do I do to finish setting up my LAN? Poking around MCC, I noticed there is an expert way to configure the nic. There it asks what protocol to use, static ip, uchp, and there was a third choice I can't remember. Should I go ahead and set it up for uchp, or static? And then what? Should I give up trying to set this up via MCC (Mandrake Control Center) and do it via the terminal mode? I think I have covered most of it. If you need any further information, I will be more than glad to provide it. Thanks in advance. Regards, Dexter AKA coqui- in #shelter on EFnet. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Problems configuring network card
Hello: Got a problem. I was trying to configure my nic using the Mandrake Control Center - Connection. I entered the information as best I thought. I am pretty new at Linux and admitedly some of it was guess work. After I finished configuring it I rebooted the system. When I tried to re-establish my connection to the internet via my modem the connection was established without any problems. But now none of my internet applicatons are able to access internet locations. My email program is timing out, can't access IRC, and web browser also times out. I am able to gain full access again, if and only if I physically remove the nic from the slot in the computer. I suspect, once the modem connects with the isp, the pc is trying to access the internet via the nic instead of the modem. It is a theory and the only one I have. With the nic installed, I have tried going back to Mandrake's control center, but when I click on the connection icon, it times out after 15 seconds. So I can't go back and reconfigure the nic. Can somebody guide me on how to get back to where I was before I tried to configure my nic? I am very new at this. I have read some of the documentation on configuring network cards, and establishing lan's (my ultimate goal) but find many of it to deal in generalities. Well, I followed the instructions and i did not get the ok. Any suggestions as to what might be going on now? I am thinking a possible irq conflict, but I don't know how to check for irq's. I have not reached the chapter yet. ;). If I go to /dev I can see a file by the name of modem ttyS1. Not sure what it means, but it seems like the modem is on serial port 2. I have an additional device in serial port one (as assigned in windows) which LM does not recognize and at this time it does not matter, but could it be creating some sort of conflict. One more thing, I keep reading of a program called Kppp. I can't find in my system to safe my life. I have checked under installed s/w and under installable s/w, and I get zip, nada, ought, zippity doo da, for a response. Any suggestions??? Again, I appreciate the response I have received so far. I feel like I am getting closer, but still feel like a ship in the midst of a fog and for some reason, I also get the feeling there is an iceberg out there with my name on it. [newbie] Newbie having problems with modem...
Hello: Let me introduce myself. My name is Dexter, and just today I installed linux on a partitioned hdd and I am looking forward to spending some good quality time with this group list. I own a Dell 4100 series pc, running on an 800mhz PIII, with about 380 megs of ram, 40 gig hdd, a linksys nic, a scanner, two printers, a power backup system, and a Conexant/Rockwell modem. The modem is not a winmodem. Ok, now for some background as to what happened. I am pretty new at unix/linux. One big reason I decided to install linux was to learn more about the o/s. I have had shell accounts in the past, but have never been involved in any heavy duty unix/linux stuff. So basically, I can move files around, I am pretty good at deleting files, and have very very little experience tarring/untarring and setting up kernels and what not. In any case, I went ahead and installed the system. It all seemed to go well. I had to play around a bit before it recognized both my printers, but it was not a big deal and I have yet to try and get the network up and running (I will tackle the network later). But I am having a problem getting the o/s and the modem to coexist. I went through the internet connection wizard and placed all the proper information (or so I think, everything is subject to change without notice), but when I try to connect all I get is a message stating: Modem is Busy. Well, far as I know, the modem is not busy and it works fine in windoze. I tried using all the different com ports, including the something/modem allocation (it is configured for com2 in win98), with no luck. Under properties, the modem is described as a HFCModem MDP3900V-U PCI Enumerator modem (don't know what it all means, but there it is anyway). I tried running minicom (as suggested by a person in #mandrake in irc), but I basically had the same result. I tried removing the nic, thinking maybe there is a conflict going on between the two (the wizard at first thinks I am accessing the net via the network), but again no luck. I went to the conexant web site, but they don't have any linux drivers available for their modems. I visited the #mandrake channel in IRC and one of their helpers suggested running ppp-on, but the copy I obtained is in the tar format, and I don't feel confident about messing with it at this point in time. I also sent a message to the support group at Mandrake, but I suspect it might be a couple of days before I hear from them. So, I am hoping somebody in this group list can help me out. I have a few theories running in my head, actually more like intuitions. One theory would be that Mandrake cannot support the conexant/rockwell modem. It would surprise me, considering they are one of the major manufacturers of modems around. If indeed conexant is not supported, can somebody send me the brandname and model number of a modem supported by Mandrake? Another possibility might be a bad switch setting. If interested, I could copy the settings for all the parameters, but I rather wait and do it only if necessary. Taking up enough bandwidth as it is. My modem strings seem ok, but it has been a while since I played with such things, so an erroneous setting is a possibility. Of course the best scenario would be somebody somewhere who has had the same experience I am, and having a fix for it. So if you know the answer, don't be shy. ;) Also, and depending on how comfortable people might feel about it, I could call you and try to trouble shoot it over the phone. I live in the United States, and would like to keep the call within the lower 48 if possible. :) I can also be found in IRC, specifically in the Efnet network in the channel #shelter under the nickname of Coqui. I normally have a client there 24/7. I have most everything else up and running and I want to get the modem up and going, to see what it can do. In any case, any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Regards, Dexter AKA Coqui- Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] StarOffice Word 97/2000 format
for some reason...you might have installed it wrong perhaps I would fully un-install it(star office)...and then re-install. and unless...you wish to allow each single account on your machine to use the one install, then I would install it ONLY in your \home\username directory...not in root. I never had that problem...never heard of anyone else either... so I assume you installed it, or mandrake wrong. also make sure you update the menus accordingly...both system and users. When I try to save any document in StarOffice (the wordprocessor ) in Word 97/2000 format, the entire program freezes. Linux runs, but the program simply stops (screen still there, but nothing happening. Sun corporation hasn't heard of this problem, and I can't find any reference to it anywhere else. Any thoughts?
