Adding FTP locations to Windows Explorer

2001-09-14 Thread Bill Lister

Environment = NT4.0 SP4 w/IE 5.0

Within Office 97, selecting 'File Save As' allows you to open your 'FTP
locations'. Is there a way to add that to the Windows Explorer interface?

I want to be able to move files to and from an FTP site with an Explorer
like interface without buying a third party program. It seems as though
this functionality should be available. If I have the option to access to a
'Web Folder', why can't I access an 'FTP Location'?

Anyone?

Bill

  Hello -
  NT 4 SP6a Domain - Win 98

  Getting a strange problem
  here -

  Win 98 clients are
authenticating to the domain because Outlook/Exchange is working fine but some
of them do not get the login script to run. No Errors - it just doesn't
go. If I go to the client and drill down through network neighborhood to
the netlogin share of the PDC I get an access denied message. If I drill
down to the netlogin share of the BDC I can run the script
  manually.
If I reboot the PDC and do
the same thing from the same client I can run it manually.
  I modified the two scripts
and put the words PDC and BDC in each of the respective scripts to see where
they are running from - from my test machine I have no issues but sometimes it
runs from the BDC and sometimes from the PDC.
  Verified the netlogin share
is set to everyone. This all started after applying the MS Security
  Rollup Hot fix.

  Has anyone else seen this
problem? Searched MS and could only find the problem relating to win95
clients Q142672 that talks about command line parameters - that does not seem
  related.

RE: Using W2K RAS to connect to a Novell 5.1 Network

2001-09-14 Thread Mark Brackett

If using Netware 5+, and all TCP/IP, just
connect to RAS as normal and (if necessary) fire up the NW Client. You may
need to add DNS/HOST entry for your Novell server depending on the timeout
settings for the login client.
If using IPX/SPX, make sure that both the
RAS server/service and the DUN connection are configured for it. After
connecting, the Novell Client should start automatically. You may need to modify
login scripts to deal with the serious speed decrease
As an aside, if you don't have an NT box,
and need to do this, instead of buying a Novell solution, you can use Freesco on
an old PC for TCP/IP dial-in.

Re: Accurace of Article.

2001-09-14 Thread Vashek Weis

Although Stu already asked us to return to normal trace, I can't leave this
article without a reply. All of you please accept my apology. Just hit
delete if you are not interested.

I can't comment on the accuracy of this article, I have to see to believe.
Links to relevant information on the web would help. Without these link
this article loses its basis.

I would like only to comment on the facts.

1. The fact is that this happened. On the first day, Palestinians were
celebrating this horrible terrorist act at the WTC. This was the real
reaction of the people on the street to these sad events but the reports
were minimal for the reasons below. On the second day, the whole world was
shown how Chairman Arafat is donating blood. This was the fake reaction of
the Palestinian Administration.

Everything on the first day was documented by all major News Networks but
you didn't see any of these reports. The reason -- most of the journalist
working for CNN and other Networks in the West Bank are usually Palestinian
too, because other Journalist entering the Palestinian territory are simply
endangering their life. And when the news started to reveal, these
journalist where arrested by the Palestinian police and given two options:
either you call your Network and instruct them not to broadcast your
report, or, if these reports will be broadcast, your life is in danger. The
same intimidations were directed toward the local management of these
Networks and it helped. Nobody except the Israeli Journalist organization
protested. The intimidation, which is also kind of terrorism, was effective.

On local TV we have seen reports showing the celebrations and how candies
were given on streets.

2. Even if the CNN report was misleading, the facts didn't change.
Palestinians were celebrating Iraqi invasion to Kuwait, they were
celebrating when Iraqi Scud missiles hit Tel Aviv, they were celebrating
when about 30 teenagers were killed in Disco at Tel Aviv few months ago and
they are celebrating this horrible action at the WTC. They are just hiding
their latest celebrations.

Only yesterday there was a funeral here at Alfei Menashe of 47 years old
women, mother to two boys, which was killed by Palestinian forces by
shooting her car on the road. Is this a legal resistance (not my opinion)
to occupying military force or just another terrorist action.

3. I can't belive CNN chooses to show us old pictures but for the reasons
I mentioned above you can understand them. They reported about what is
going on, and since fresh pictures were not available, they decided to show
us old reports on similar subject. This is reasonable but they should tell
us in advance they are doing this. But I still can't believe it's true.

4. I tried to check what organization stands behind this article.
On http://www.indymedia.org/about.php3 and
http://www.indymedia.org/alliases.php3 there is too much (for my taste) of
progressive and social. It reminds me the propaganda of those ex
communist countries that I was born at.

5. To remind you, the PLO (the organization Arafat is its chairman) was
the first one who started with the civil planes hijacking fashion,
hijacking El-Al plane to Algeria about 25 years ago. Since then they did it
too much more times.

God bless America.

I think that Kurt made some very good points and as he says, this articles reiterates what he's been saying. I think that everyone is too close to the event to be able to see this.

I don't think that anyone is saying that the world would be better if it was communist, this is exactly why we halted Hitlers invasion of Europe. Also, rest assured that NO-ONE is saying that this attack is in any way justified for any involvement that has happened in the past.

The fact that NATO has invoked article 5 is an indication of just how much we don't think it was justified. To declare that an attack against a member state is an attack against all member states has never happened for acts of terrorism.

As a sign of just how much it has affected us outside the US, for the first time ever the Queen's guards played the American National Anthem at the changing of the guards. Today at 11am GMT accross the whole of Europe there is going to be 3 minutes silence to remember and reflect.

Be sure, whilst it may have been you that were attacked, your friends will be there by your side come judgement day.

RE: Win2000 Server: Audit both account Logins and logoffs

2001-09-14 Thread Greg Page

Other than auditing, I'm not aware of any utilities out there that will give
you the log on/off times. There is the NET VIEW /DOMAIN:domain_name which
will tell you which computers are logged on the network. In my login script
(which is written with WinBatch), I have these lines which writes the
username, computer name, date and time when someone logs onto the domain.

:Log_user
;- Computer Name? -
sysinfo = WinSysInfo( )
computername  = ItemExtract(1, sysinfo, @TAB)

;- Date and Time? -
date_time=TimeYmdHms( )
date_time=StrSub(date_time, 4, 13)

;-- Create output record with basic information --
output_record=strcat(username,, ,computername, ,,date_time)

;- Write Output Record -
output_path=StrCat(Logon_Server,\logons$\userinfo.txt)
output_file=FileOpen(output_path,APPEND)
FileWrite(output_file, output_record)
fileclose(output_file)
Return

With W2K, you can also specify a logout script in the GPO and capture the
same information.

I'm not fully understanding your question. Did you intend to put Win2000
both times? In Win2000 you set up auditing with the GPO. In NT 4, it's
through User Manager For Domains. How is he going to track them if they only
lock the computer instead of logging off? And what if they log in locally?
You need to convince him that this isn't a sound way to find out if people
are at work.

Re: has anyone used doubletake successfully?

I'd like to know if you've ever had to failover to the other server and
how quickly and smoothly, if at all that went?

Also, did you look at any other products or solutions before deciding on
Double Take and, if so, why did you decide on Double Take?

I understand that my situation may differ but I'm looking at using a web
server (IIS) and SQL 7.0 on NT or 2000 as the operating system (depends
on when the decisions are made) and data will need to be replicated and
if the primary server goes down there should be as quick and smooth as
possible a transition to the backup machine. I've had personal
experience with NT Cluster server and, for this application, the
failover takes too long. We are hoping to minimize transaction loss as
much as possible.

RE: has anyone used doubletake successfully?

2001-09-14 Thread Ian Kelly

I used it for exactly that situation. The data transfer is real time and
I experienced no data loss in failover testing. The transition took less
than a minute (probably less than 30 seconds actually) with minimal
hassle reconnecting to the backup machine from the web server (we use
separate boxes for IIS and SQL obviously).
I looked at one or 2 other products and decided on Double Take bacuse it
was the only one that actually worked! I figured that was cause enough
to use it. The interface is easy to use, setup is pretty simple and data
transfer was quick (even the initial mirror of all data)

I'd like to know if you've ever had to failover to the other server and
how quickly and smoothly, if at all that went?

Also, did you look at any other products or solutions before deciding on
Double Take and, if so, why did you decide on Double Take?

I understand that my situation may differ but I'm looking at using a web
server (IIS) and SQL 7.0 on NT or 2000 as the operating system (depends
on when the decisions are made) and data will need to be replicated and
if the primary server goes down there should be as quick and smooth as
possible a transition to the backup machine. I've had personal

failover takes too long. We are hoping to minimize transaction loss as

As David mentioned, I'm using Intel Server Nics and using the Intel software
to perform ALB. With Adaptive Load balancing, you get all cards teaming
traffic outbound, but only one can recieve. There is also another
configuration (NLB?) that truly teams the cards, but you have to have a
matching switch (all I know is that we don't have one... not sure what it
is) and configure the ports.

I THINK Win2k Advanced Server has some ALB stuff built in for all nics, but
since we only have Server, I can't tell you the extent of the features.
Maybe someone else could elaborate who is using it?

I'm not sure about 3coms. Intels function with their own software/drivers
that give 2 cards the same IP address, therefore balancing the load across
both NICS.

BROWSER service issues..

2001-09-14 Thread Bob Chyka

Hello all,

first and foremost, dont forget about the prayer
tonight at 7:00 nationwide...

I have a question about windows 2000 browser
service. here is a quick configuration of our network and then it will
make my question alot easier to answer.

we have a Cisco 4006 core switch with a routing
blade for vlan routing. we have vlans named vlan 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and
70 with ip addresses in each accordingly (172.16.20.x, 172.16.30.x, etc.)
vlan 20 can see all other vlans. all our switches and administrator
machines are in that vlan. our windows 2000 servers are in vlan 30.
all vlans have access to 30 (servers) but dont have access to each other.
for instance, vlan 40 has access to vlan 40 and 30 but nothing else,
etc.

I have the master browser for the domain in vlan 30
on one of our servers and the backup browser in 30 also. i know the
browser service builds its machine lists by broadcasts. is there any
possible way for the browser service to add machines to its browse list from all
the other vlans? i know that is one of the main purposes of vlans to
control and separate broadcasts on a network. do i need a browser on each
vlan and then somehow communicating with the master browser in vlan 30?
this is important to get a list of all the machines in our domain for some
management programs to work right, antivirus, etc.

any help is appreciated before i call
microsoft. i only need to see the full browser lists in vlans 20 and
30. the administrators vlans and server vlan.

thanks very much for any input and God bless
america!

not very good. If you work with the product for more then a couple of days

We are using it with IIS, SQL7 running on NT and it works great, fails over

for us. The fail back is the only spot where we have to go in and remove the
failed over ip manually because it just won't work right. It has once or

Hope that helps,

 like to exploit an

The reason the standalone SQL 7 computer cannot join the

application, Gentran for NT Server. This is a EDI mapping
 software from
Sterling Software and it uses MS SQL Server. I have tried to join the
computer to a domain but that cause problems to Gentran. I
 have talked to
Sterling about this and they advised to run Gentran in a standalone
 environment.
I created a user, ediadmin, in the domain with the same username and
password in the standalone SQL 7 computer. When I logon the
 backup SQL 2000
member server as ediadmin, I am able to attach to the SQL7
 computer in the
SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager and perform all functions to the
 databases in
SQL7. However, I cannot use ediadmin to attach to MS SQL
 Server in the
BackupExec Selection tab inside the Job Definition tab.
 Hence, SQL Agent in
BE won't work. BTW, all BE services and SQL Server service
 are logon as
 ediadmin. Any suggestions?

RE: has anyone used doubletake successfully?

I've done failover and failback on my Exchange 5.5 server without problems,
Double Take does give separate instructions specifically for Exchange, and I
performed this about 10 times on a pair of test servers before bringing it
live. There are some things you need to do that are not documented when
failing back, but I spotted them in the lab beforehand (without checking my
doc's - removing Wins entries and rebooting the target after failover comes
to mind). Exchange takes a minute or two to fail over on my Exchange
server, due to the need to start all the various services.
Just curious, did you call NSI for tech support or Sunbelt? I did not have
a need to call tech support, but I'd like to know what I'm up against if I
do.

I have seen this as well on some machines. In my experience, it has been
machines that have been over burdened. Typically too many services, and not
enough memory. Do some performance monitoring and see if that might be the
case.

Subject: RPC too busy?

Often, when I need to re-boot the NT server (4.0 SP6) on the first (or first
couple) try, I can't run anything. I get The RPC is too busy to complete
the task and no users can get to their email.

After a retry or two, it usually comes back together, but it's not right.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hello
-

NT 4 SP6a Domain - Win 98
clients One PDC and one BDC both Win NT 4 SP6a
Getting a strange problem
here -

Win 98 clients are
authenticating to the domain because Outlook/Exchange is working fine but
some of them do not get the login script to run. No Errors - it just
doesn't go. If I go to the client and drill down through network
neighborhood to the netlogin share of the PDC I get an access denied
message. If I drill down to the netlogin share of the BDC I can run
the script manually.
If I reboot the PDC and
do the same thing from the same client I can run it
manually.

I modified the two
scripts and put the words PDC and BDC in each of the respective scripts to
see where they are running from - from my test machine I have no issues but
sometimes it runs from the BDC and sometimes from the
PDC.
Verified the netlogin
share is set to everyone. This all started after applying the MS
Security Rollup Hot fix.
Has anyone else seen this
problem? Searched MS and could only find the problem relating to win95
clients Q142672 that talks about command line parameters - that does not
seem related.

RE: NIC Load Balancing

The best way to implement LB is using IP Metrics software or their
competitor's (forget their name). They will allow you to load balance both
incoming/outgoing traffic.
The software provided by 3Com Intel only load balance outgoing.

Everything worked like expected expect, except for intermittent activity

I tried pinging the printers IP, I would get 2/4 or 3/4 or 0/4 reply's

move a FTP site with a number of virtual directories to another server. Although the new server will have the
same name, it is an older box with a different controller so a restore is
probably not the way to go.

I can
export and transfer the local accounts with ADDUSERS.EXE (with loss of
passwords) but was wondering if there was any way to transfer the FTP virtual sites. I will still have to reset the
directory permissions due to the new sids.

RE: NIC Load Balancing

2001-09-14 Thread Kevin Lundy

Not entirely true. *IF* you have cards, drivers, and switches that support
Cisco's FEC standard (Fast Ether Channel) you can get load balancing both
ways. Compaq branded Intel cards and of course Cisco switches will do this.

The best way to implement LB is using IP Metrics software or their
competitor's (forget their name). They will allow you to load balance both
incoming/outgoing traffic.
The software provided by 3Com Intel only load balance outgoing.
Make sure you have switch, not hub.

We have an NT4.0 sp6a server with 2 3com nic cards with discreet tcp/ip

monitoring both cards showed that they were recieving the exact same
traffic.
Is load balancing the way to fix this, and if so where do I find out how to
do
it.

Recently I installed a Intel Pro 100/S Dual Port NIC. Then proceeded to
configure a load balancing array consisting of the 2 ports on the Intel
NIC.
Both ports where then connected to a 3Com 3300 switch.

Everything worked like expected expect, except for intermittent activity
 with the printers.
Sometimes they would print other times end-user will get message like
 printer unavailable or not connected.
I tried pinging the printers IP, I would get 2/4 or 3/4 or 0/4 reply's
back,
 randomly.

 Print Server - NT4 sp6a
 Clients - NT4 sp6a
All printers are one of three types- HP 4000, 5M, 2500CM

Has one experienced this before or have any advice?

There is no problem with the failover it is the failback that does not work
as designed. You will be pretty much on your own also the tech support is
not very good. If you work with the product for more then a couple of days
you will not more then the support dudes.

We are using it with IIS, SQL7 running on NT and it works great, fails over
within 30 seconds. WE don't have a large volume of ecommerce so that is fine
for us. The fail back is the only spot where we have to go in and remove the
failed over ip manually because it just won't work right. It has once or
twice but most often it does not work as advertised. We have messed with it
and messed with it and - well, it is just easier to manually remove the ip
etc...

Hope that helps,

side note - we are using co-standby server for another app and it works
outstanding and it is much easier to configure. I like them both each are
unique.

Cold storage of Windows 2000 AD PCs

We are finishing up some BCP work started earlier this year by building
20-25 Windows 2000 PCs and putting them in storage at an off-site facility.

Question: before unplugging them from the network, should we remove them

doesn't see AD for many weeks/months, will it be a royal mess because the
computer account will have been inactive so long?

Subject: Warning: Spam
Urging Red Cross Donations Sends Users to Trick Site
Consumer protection advocates are warning Internet users that
scam artists are trying to take advantage of Tuesday's terrorist attacks. Spam
solicitations have been sent out urging Netizens to donate money to the Red
Cross or other relief organizations. But the e-mails direct potential donors to
private Web sites apparently designed to steal credit card numbers.
Web users who feel the urge to contribute financially to the
relief efforts should be suspicious of any e-mail solicitation. Here are a
few tips to follow:
* If you don't know the organization or person who sent the
request, it's probably fraudulent.
* Virtually no bona-fide relief agencies request funds by
sending email to people who are not already involved in that agency.
Solicitations made in this way may also violate laws in the United States and
Europe.
* If you click on a link to donate, examine the URL shown in
your browser. If the domain name of the URL is hidden, unfamiliar, or doesn't
match the link's text, the request is probably fraudulent.
* Verify the solicitor's identity through another medium (such
as phone) before giving money. Spammers frequently forge the identity and style
of well-known entities to gain credibility.
Those wishing to donate to the Red Cross can visit the agency's

Hi,I have set up VPN on Small Business

dial in and am authenticated on the server. I can see all the
shares onthe other Windows 98 computers. If I try and

however.I bring the same computer into the office and plug

Please stop tying what's happening in Israel with WTC

Palestinians are fighting occupation, a perpetuated one

WTC is a response from specific parties to New World Order

I'm deeply sorry for all casualties, in USA, Israel , and on the Palestinian

Subject: Re: Accurace of Article.

One more question: Do you keep the second server in another location
(necessitating a WAN link) or on the same subnet or different subnet?

I'm interested in how well the failover goes with the second server

how quickly and smoothly, if at all that went?

Also, did you look at any other products or solutions before deciding on
Double Take and, if so, why did you decide on Double Take?

I understand that my situation may differ but I'm looking at using a web
server (IIS) and SQL 7.0 on NT or 2000 as the operating system (depends
on when the decisions are made) and data will need to be replicated and
if the primary server goes down there should be as quick and smooth as
possible a transition to the backup machine. I've had personal
experience with NT Cluster server and, for this application, the
failover takes too long. We are hoping to minimize transaction loss as
 much as possible.

I know I'm going to get some flames for this but Palestine exists only because
the Roman Empire created it when they ruled that area of the world. They used
Jewish territories to create the country of Palestine. So just who is occupying
who's country?
That aside, what happened with the WTC is directly related to Palestine in that
the USA is backing Israel instead of Palestine in who gets to rule the disputed
territories in the world today. Both sides, Jews and Arabs have been fighting
for millennia. Much longer than the USA has existed.
Why pick on the new kid on the block when the USA is only trying to prevent
killing people?

RE: Cold storage of Windows 2000 AD PCs

2001-09-14 Thread Miley, Dan

the Machine log in accounts (machine domain accounts) passwords change
automatically, and may be out of synch. Depending on the account policy on
the domain. I know this happens in nt40. The solution I've seen is to
remove them and add back to the domain. That resynchs the machine account.

to see the list of computer accounts in the domain, open server manager, or
MMC.

I'd put them in a workgroup, the write a script to add them back in

net computer \\machine1 /add
net computer \\machine2 /add
etc.

then document to go to the control panel of the workstations and add the
machines back into the domain on the DC when you do the dry run (hopefully
only a dry run).

one advantage is if your Disaster recovery domain is differently named. . .

Your mileage may vary, no techs were harmed with the execution of this file,
standard disclamers apply, Someone else may have another opinion, bla, bla,
bla...

Subject: Cold storage of Windows 2000 AD PCs

We are finishing up some BCP work started earlier this year by building
20-25 Windows 2000 PCs and putting them in storage at an off-site facility.

Question: before unplugging them from the network, should we remove them
from the AD domain? My concern is with the AD computer accounts. If the PC
doesn't see AD for many weeks/months, will it be a royal mess because the
computer account will have been inactive so long?

Imaging, HW Profiles, and USB Devices

2001-09-14 Thread Miller Bonnie L.

Does anyone have any experiences they could share about building USB devices
into RIS/Sysprep images? I would even care to hear what Ghost does as it
may be similar. Also, does anyone know if you can restrict via GPO the time
when .msi packages are delivered to pcs in a particular OU? For example, I
want to assign a setup.msi file for a particular OU, but I want to make sure
it doesn't install between 7:00am and 1:00pm.

Here's our situation:
We are working on getting a few computers for each of our schools set up
which will be used as POS terminals (using our existing student system) in
the cafeterias at lunchtime, and then they will be rolled into an office for
desk work later in the day. We are testing with Win2k Pro (these are Dell
Optiplexes) using SMC USB wireless adapters (this has already been decided
and tested and will work for our situation, locked by mac, etc, to the WAP)
for while they are in the cafeteria area, and then wired to the network
while in the office. I've set up two hardware profiles-one for Wired and
one for Wireless, and this all works beautifully. I know that if you move
the USB device to the other USB port on the pc that it will try to redetect,
but I've found that user level access on Win2k (what our staff have) won't
allow them to do anything with it. We might even just cover up the other
port for these machines to minimize problems.

Now, I've found that I can make a RIS image on one machine and it will
include the hardware profile information and installs correctly when RIS-ing
back to the same pc. But, I'm concerned about when I image another machine,
whether it will redetect the USB device, and if so, does it correctly
re-assign it in the existing HW profile or does it treat it like a new
device as if I'd plugged it into a new USB port? I know that RIS will try
and redetect PNP hardware. I don't have a second USB Wireless device to
play with yet or I would just try it out.

Then, once these machines are up and running in AD, I'm concerned about
software installing slowly over the wireless connection (at a very poor time
too), but would like it to install over the wired connection. (I realize we
could publish software-this may be the alternative for this group).

Thanks for any thoughts on this,
Bonnie M.

Way off topic - Volunteering

2001-09-14 Thread Kevin Bachelder

Hi everyone,

I am looking to find a way to volunteer my time to assist non-profits or
similar organizations that need technical assistance or maybe be a
technical tutor or resource at a community center, etc. I knows this
sounds crazy but my early attempts to find these opportunities near my
local community have come up empty. Does anyone have any suggestions on
how they have gone about this or similar things.

Take care,

Kevin

2001-09-14 Thread Owsley, Kenneth

You know, I have experienced the same thing, I don't know what it is.
I've volunteered my time to many different organizations and none seem to
take me up on my time.

I think they have discovered, as have many other businesses, that their
computer systems are important enough to their operation to spend money
on. So they spend money on building a reliable trust relationship with a
repair/sales house. Just because they don't take a profit doesn't mean
they don't need someone when they need them. And volunteer folks like you
and me aren't always available when they need us!

Stu,

Just would like to personally thank you for the opportunity list members had
to express their off topic opinions. I saw varied opinions and the list
does reflect its international flavor. As a testament to this there were a
many who disagreed with what I had to say. In the coming months there will
be LOTS to talk about with regards to the attack and the repercussions. I
also have to thank everyone around the world who has shown the United States
so much support.

Adding users in Windows 2000

2001-09-14 Thread Carl Dionne

To start, it is good to be on topic again.

My question is regarding adding users in Windows 2000. We recently moved
our network from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 (Servers and Workstations).
We use scripts to add our class user accounts using the NET command as
follows:

net user username password /add
net group groupname username /add /domain
.
.
.
.

for each user we wish to add. We use a home grown Visual Basic program do
create the scripts.

This kind of script worked fine for Windows NT 4.0, however here is the
problem with Windows 2000.

Windows 2000 has two different logon names, A Windows 2000 dns based login
name in the form of username@domain.org. There is also a Pre-Windows
2000 login name that consists of the NETBIOS NAME\Username. In our case a
user name for jsmith would be both in the form of
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and CS2\jsmith.

When the script utilizing net user command is used the user is created, but
it does not fill in the name for the DNS version of the login name. So on
the account tab of a users properties the User login name field is empty.

This has resulted in some of the users having intermittent trouble logging
into the domain. An error message comes up saying the domain cannot be
found. Once the user name for the DNS logon is set the user can login just
fine.

Has anyone seen this error? Is there a new version of the NET command out
there with better parameters? Also to note I have converted my servers to
Native Mode, no more NT around at all.
Because we make hundreds of new accounts every semester I would like to find
a way to make the NET USER command run properly in Windows 2000.

Win2000 print server not giving printer alerts

2001-09-14 Thread Tom . Kustner

We have a Windows 2000 (SP2) print server with 28 HP LaserJet network
printers attached.
I am trying to get the alerts set up so that an alert is sent out when
certain workhorse printers (5Si/8000) run out of paper or generate a not
ready condition (such as the printer being off-line). However, I cannot
get any alerts sent out, despite the fact I have several of these printers
off-line.

If I go into http://printserver/printers and check the printers out, IIS
can see that the printers are off-line. I know the alert functioning works
because I generated messages the other night for items like Total Pages
Printed. I have gone into JetAdmin but cannot find anything extra that
would need configuring and, anyhow, the above link shows that the printer is
off-line, so some part of the box knows the printer is off-line.
Microsoft's knowledge base has turned up nothing and I have been unable to
find anything in Groups Google. Another oddity is that if you graph the
alerts, the out of paper and not ready alerts are always at zero.

Any ideas? Is there some setting I am missing? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

I too would like to thank Stu, especially for his patience. This has to
have put a huge load on his systems. WED, he said he was killing a thread

only drifted off topic but got down right ugly at times. The group charter
got violated quit a bit with personal attacks, name calling, etc. I don't
seem to remember Stu announcing that accounts had been barred from the forum.

Stu, thanks again for being patient with us and understanding that tempers
would be short as a result of the outrageous recent events!

We're talking about $1,400 to purchase and being an admin for a city government network that's a whole lot of money. Any opinions good, bad, or indifferent. Please let me know.
