RE: InoculateIT opinions

2001-09-28 Thread Lefkovics, William

This is an InoculateIT-free zone!!

EjaculateIT as we call it, is a viable Windows workstation choice for
real-time anti-virus monitoring, unless you want expedient updates,
reasonable tech support and be able to use all your network applications
smoothly.

I recommend almost anything else over this product for server-based
protection.

We use InocIT across our organization. We have a corporate agreement with
CA to use their products, so we use it by association. Personally, I hate
it, but it's not that bad. It's just (IMHO) not as good as any other
product out there. I know freeware virus scanners that do a better job than
InocIT, especially with Nimda and CodeRed. We had many, many machines
across the enterprise that were infected with both, but InocIT missed 'em
both. Their sig updates are very reactionary, and never proactive. I run
Norton on my Windows PC at home, and it caught both without a sig update
using heuristics. It couldn't clean them, but it quarantined the files
until the update came a few hours later. I couldn't say that about InocIT
without lying. CA even sent us one of their other products on CD with the
funlove virus minted on. Says a lot about their scanner, huh.

We took a closer look at our logs and noticed that just before the server
hangs it quits putting entries in the log form print jobs even though
printers are still working. Then printing and file access just stops
responding. No error events get recorded because nothing is being written
to the logs. Thought this might be related to a bad RAID Array controller,
so we replaced it and the same thing happened. We have added the registry
entry suggested by Denise and will watch it over the weekend. Don't expect
to know much until the Monday AM load hits.

Steve,

Seriously take a look at TrendMicro's virus scan offering - OfficeScan
Corporate Edition. I've used Symantec's Norton Antivirus, CA's InoculateIT,
McAfee's VirusScan and countless others..

TrendMicro does workgroup AV right! From a centralized managemnet console
(web based) to deploy to new users, set policies on the local client (Set
whether the user can disable OfficeScan or not, etc.), and automatic
updates of virus definitions and deployment to desktops.

Also, Look at TrendMicro's NeatSuite. It a combination of OfficeScan,
ScanMail and InterScan Viruswall for about the same price as just 1 of the
products.

Hi all,

I came in to find our primary partition on our exchange server full. There
are 3 folders in c:\exchsrvr\imcdata named 'in', 'log', and 'out'. The 'in'
and 'out' folders each contain 1.30 GB of data in some type of log file
form. The 'log' folder contains 760 MB of data. I do not know the
structure of exchange very well, and I am wondering if I can delete the
files in these folders. Will they re-replicate? Will this kill the
exchnage server?

These seem to be the individual transactions that have been processed
through the exchange server, but they do not remove themselves. They are
not my users mailboxes because I have them setup on another larger
partition. Does anyone know what these files are for sure?

RE: Exchange/Outlook Alternatives

2001-09-27 Thread Lefkovics, William

I haven't found one product that totally embodies the collaborative
functionality and unbridled potential of Exchange Server and its
complimentary server products (Sharepoint Portal Server, Mobile Information
Server, Conference Server).

Let's face it, Exchange is not that expensive for offices utilising 1000
mailboxes. Exchange2000 with collaborative web applications, Outlook Web
Access components, public folder storage etc etc is a good deal if deployed
well beyond just your basic email from point A to point B.

I have been working on a project for management here called the
Microsoft-less office. It has been put on the backburner and will not be
completed in next couple of weeks still. This involved research and in some
cases obtaining rough price quotes for an office deployment including
messaging applications.

If you require staying on Windows as the server, there are still many email
packages available. A comprehensive list of mail servers that run on
Windows ironically is available at Microsoft's site:
http://www.microsoft.com/NTServer/partners/findoffering/commserv/Mail.asp

I think you'll end up searching elsewhere for your calendaring product.
Goldmine, Act!, or a customised application even using Access and web
components come to mind, though they are really contact and schedule
managers:
http://www.frontrange.com/products.asp
http://www.act.com/home/default.php3

These solutions are not free and require admin and user training.

That's all I have time for at the moment. Wife's birthday. Going to Osaka
for sushi.

I'm constantly asked for recommendations on VIABLE alternatives to the
MS Outlook/Exchange groupware system. Let's face it: Exchange is
expensive, and does a lot of things that most of my SMB customers will
never need. I've seen a few different products, but have yet to find one
that integrates and works as well as Outlook with an Exchange server.

Do you guys have any ideas on substitutes. The main core features that
most SMB's use would be the scheduling/calendaring , POP/IMAP email, and
address book. It'd be nice to have the whole lot integrated, but
seperate products with a good UI would do. The email and address book
clients are easy enough to find, but what about calendaring? Something
with the ability to both share an office calendar, and have seperate
(but viewable) calendars for each worker. Editor priveleges for a
secretary on specific calendars would be a plus, as well. To complicate
it a bit further, how about something that would work on a peer-to-peer
network ( 10 PC's) with no dedicated server? Any thoughts?

Subject:OT: Canadian Article

This should be read by every American. After yesterday's tragedy, we
all
need a boost in spirit. This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth
sharing.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a
remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a
Canadian
 television commentator.

What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in
the
 Congressional Record:

 America: The Good Neighbor.
This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the
most
generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted
out
of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of
dollars
and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today
paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans
who
propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the
streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that
hurries
in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by
 tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars
into
discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing
about
 the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the
erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any
other
country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the
Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly
them?
Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman
on
 the moon?

You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios.
You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.
You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon-not
once, but several times-and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the
store
window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not
pursued
and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless
they
are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and
pa at
 home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down
through
age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania
Railroad
and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old
caboose.
 Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of
other
people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else
raced
 to the Americans in trouble?

I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco
 earthquake.
Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned
tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this
thing
 with their flag high.

And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands
that
are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of
 those.

This may not be a real Hi-tech way of doing things.

Have you considered buying a fire-proof safe and renting a mini-storage
unit? Make sure the safe is data grade, ordinary fire-proof safe's won't
protect tapes or disks. Typical small 5' X 10' self storage unit is
20/month here (Illinois).

A friend of mine who just had a baby told me "You know they only

Econ 200 Professor Wells, The University of Arizona in Tucson
--"There is no such thing as a free lunch, ..and if you
say love...we know you're a freshman."
The 'free'dom we've had all these years has never been FREE!!
Ask anyone whose served during a war -- personally our
'free'dom has cost me an uncle (whom I never met), a
father who still can't watch war movies and has skin problems because of agent orange, another uncle who is slightly off,
and let's not forget about taxes; 'free'dom costs me
more than 30% a year.
You can_not_have_it_all. It is as simple as supply and demand --
in your personal life, can you spend all of the money
you work for on any whimsical idea that pops into your
head? No, because you will be less; homeless, clothes-less, penniless but if that is your decision you have the choice
to make it so, but you can not have it both ways. As
we've learned recently, the 'free'dom we all think is
'free' has cost us around $20billion, (I think that's a
low figure too) -- it doesn't include lives either. Please, explain
to the families of those missing or dead why we should not give
up any liberty in exchange for security; you should be
able to find their phone numbers one of the news
websites as they were on television last night making
desperate pleas for their loved ones. Terrorist came to our country
and moved about freely, and have turned our own freedoms
against us; but we don't want the FBI to scan email?
Claim slippery-slope if you want to, but something, as
compared to nothing (what happened on Tuesday) seems like a better option at this point.
Don't be confused, it's cost a H*ll of a lot to be free, we just
don't calculate the hidden costs.

 - Require inspection of all luggage and persons boarding aircraft.
That's fine with me.

 - Require passengers to show photo ID at the security gate.
I showed it 5 times at Heathrow, what's another time or two?

 - Forbid un-ticketed people beyond the security gate.
I agree. Domestic as well as international?

 - Forbid allow any weapons or sharp objects in the passenger compartment.
No CD's? (break 'em) How am I supposed to cut that thing that passes for
chicken dinner?

 - Require aircraft crew to enter with the same checks as passengers.
Absolutely.

 - Secure service areas against unchecked entry.
Absolutely.

 - Require people entering service areas to show photo ID.
I got a guy in Phoenix that makes the best!

 - Require inspection of people and materials entering service areas.
Absolutely.

 - Monitor service areas with closed-circuit cameras.
wavingHi Mom!/waving

 - Patrol service areas with armed police.
Did my ticket price just jump from $250 to $350?

 - Deploy a program of armed and uniformed police aboard every flight.
Did they used to have Marshals?

 - Supplement said police with random undercover agents.
My ticket price just went up again.

 - Restrict and protect access to the flight deck, as already noted.
I think this is a current recommendation somewhere.

 - Replace the existing Air Traffic Control system with one that functions
correctly (their equipment is known to be inadequate for the tasks of the
past, let alone today), and track all flights at all times. Require pilots
to remain in regular contact. If contact is lost, assume the flight may be
hostile, and be prepared to intercept it as a last resort.

It definitely can't run on NT then.

Anti-Attack Feds Push Carnivore
By Declan McCullagh ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
2:00 a.m. Sep. 12, 2001 PDT

WASHINGTON -- Federal police are reportedly increasing Internet
surveillance after Tuesday's deadly attacks on the World Trade Center
and the Pentagon.

Just hours after three airplanes smashed into the buildings in what
some U.S. legislators have dubbed a second Pearl Harbor, FBI agents
began to visit Web-based, e-mail firms and network providers,
according to engineers at those companies who spoke on condition of
anonymity.

An administrator at one major network service provider said that FBI
agents showed up at his workplace on Tuesday with a couple of
Carnivores, requesting permission to place them in our core, along
with offers to actually pay for circuits and costs.

The person declined to say for publication what the provider's response was,
but a lot of people at other firms were quietly going along with the FBI's
request. I know that they are getting a lot of 'OKs' because they made it a
point to mention that they would only be covering our core for a few days,
while their 'main boxes were being set up at the Tier 1 carriers' -- scary,
the engineer said.

[...]

Microsoft's Hotmail service has also been the target of increased
federal attention, according to an engineer who works there.

Hotmail officials have been receiving calls from the San Francisco
FBI office since mid-(Tuesday) morning and are cooperating with their
expedited requests for information about a few specific accounts, the
person said. Most of the account names start with the word 'Allah'
and contain messages in Arabic.

I'm watching MSNBC and the live shots still show a lot of smoke coming up
from the area. Looks like a very large fire there now. Can any of you
NYC people see it? There were also shots of the Brooklyn bridge (I
think - never been there) full of people walking out of the city. One of
my buddies in NJ said he could see an aircraft carrier in the river and jet
fighters flying over his house.

Slashdot reports that one of the founders of Akamai may have been on one of
the planes that hit the wtc.

20 min later (10 min ago) our secretary gets a call from her husband

Even I-mail, a plain vanilla (boring) email server isn't far
behind in price!

If a client just wants a basic POP/SMTP server, the price for the product
would be almost nothing. Postfix and Sendmail on some free *nix works just
fine.

part of the cost of doing biz I think. The man hours associated w/

I've been on systems with Exchange, Groupwise and Notes. Currently
working with Notes R5.I dont really like any of them - they are all
too
cumbersome. I havent worked with any of the new web clients yet - one
thing I really dislike is the monster client they all have. I am happy
that I dont have to try to keep up with all the Outlook security
problems
though. We have had zero security problems with Notes R5.I would
rather have a simple email system such as Novell IMS which requires no
administration if you are using NDS. Then use a webserver for intranet
and database front end to take the place of the Notes databases. We
use
all the features of Notes but it takes a huge amount of support
manhours.

Last I read, Notes has about 60 million seats and Exchange has about 35
million.Everyone else is an also-ran. Whatever features one has
over
the other will probably be shortlived, as they tend to converge on the
feature set that the users want. I'm glad I dont have to select one
over the other right now. They are all bloated, too expensive, and a
black
hole for support hours.

RE: Exchange 2000

2001-09-07 Thread Lefkovics, William

1) That hardware is only adequate. Definitely a RAID for the Information
Stores would be beneficial. At least separate controllers for the logs and
databases. Hard drive space can not be assessed without policy, need, and
behavior patterns of users in your company. Some people leverage all the
features of their email system, while others just want to use basic email.
Allowing 100MB per user for initial disk space requirements would likely be
acceptible in your case (only as a basic guideline).

2) Exchange doesn't care what OS the clients run on. It's really the
protocols that the email client communicates with. Outlook in
Corporate/Workgroup mode is by far the best and provides the most features
from a user perspective. WindowsXP, with it's remote desktop feature and
added command line functionality (more so than its predecessors), is an
excellent OS for the business desktop.

3) If the users are on the local LAN, you should use Outlook using MAPI (C/W
mode) regardless of whether they have internal only or both. Exchange plays
very well with any IMAP or POP compliant client. From Netscape on Linux to
Outlook Express on Windows95. By far, Outlook using MAPI is preferred for
all the features.

4) Do NOT underestimate proper Active Directory setup and proper DNS
deployment. Ensure you have an AD disaster recovery strategy before going
forward with Exchange2000.

We are looking at implementing Exchange 2000 and I have a few questions, and
wanted advice from people who have had real world experience. We are
currently
running NT 4.0 Svr and Wkstn. I have setup a Windows 2000 Domain (still in
testing phase). We have about 100 users.

My Questions:

1. I have a PII with 2 300mhz processors and 384mb ram. Will this be ample
enough to handle Exchange 2000 and future growth? How much Hard Drive space
would you recomend?

2. We plan on Going from NT 4.0 to Windows XP. Can we connect to Exchange
2000
with the NT 4.0 Clients during the interim? Any issues I should be aware of?
Any
issues with WXP?

3. We have 50-60 users on Outlook 2002 with internet access etc., and 40-50
users on other clients (internal e-mail and intranet only). Does Exchange
play
well with other e-mail clients?

4. Any other Gottcha's, Do's, Don'ts? All advice will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Ugh, nothing like
taking some time off and coming back to a few thousand messages. Anyhow,
FWIW, here's my take on the situation:

trust HP more
than Compaq many times over. I use them for all my major servers and
printers.

HP support, after
youblow through the 'We assume you're an idiot so here are 40 hoops to
jump through' part, is pretty decent generally. Late last year, they
goofed and sent me two CPUs that had different voltages for the same NetServer
and that caused some internal damage. After immediately acknowledging the
mistake, they really stepped to the plate and ended up sending me every internal
part to rebuild the server and a tech to do it. Would they have done it
without my having a full, on-site warranty? Not sure.

I do, however,
remember calling tech support once and telling THEM that a new model of laptop
had shipped the month before then hung up, since if I knew that much more, they
couldn't tell me how to fix it...

Bottom line/Summary:
Most support can use some major bolstering, but until they're willing to pay a
bit more for the frontline staff and internal communication, you're going to get
some major headaches from talking to people whose primary job qualification was
having a pulse

Thus concludes my
tale and cynicism for the day

mis-information and I blame yahoo news which posted the story "Hewlett-Packard
to Buy Compaq in $25B Deal" However I since HP has
majority controlling interest in the merger I stick by my assertion that there
will be changes as redundant functions are eliminated.

It's
really a merger. The merged company will operate out of
Palo
Alto,
CA.

Many
Compaq executives will be retained, such as the Compaq CEO, who will become
president of the merged company.

Except its
not a merger. HP purchsed compaq. HP's management now controls the Compaq's
destiny. What this means is that HP will, in order to cut costs, eliminate all
possible redundant functions.I agree it is a good merger, but it is very naïve
to expect nothing to change.

I don't
think there will be duplicate positions. I expect them to continue to
function as 2 seperate companies. Compaq's name is much bigger than HP,
especially in the server market. I think HP just wanted a bigger piece of
the PC and Server pie, and Compaq wanted the financial backing of HP's dominance
in the peripheral and printer market. It's a good
merger.

Interesting

1.
HP, Compaq target enterprise, services

2.
Merger highlights role of HP's
Fiorina

While the merger
may not guarantee an improvement in sales/performance, does anyone see a
downside to the merger (other than HP/Compaq employees who will lose their job
when duplicate positions are eliminated)?

Do you expect the
merger to provide better products and
services?

  Hello all,
I have been a lurker for a while and this is my
  first email to the group.
We recently had a fellow domain administrator leave
my organization. Does any one have any good tools to use for changing
all the domain service accounts throughout the domain?
I definitely do not want to have to visit every

Sorry about the cross posting.

We don't have a lot of specifics on it, but there appears to be a new
worm on the loose. The payload is a typical Melissa-style worm, where
its only action is to send mail to all members of the GAL, with the
following
message:
Hi, how are you ? I am fine here. Please read the page
http://pcControl.tripod.com/ to get some knowledge and prevent somebody
hack you. Forword this mail to help all your friends too.

Its plain text, and carries no executables with it, but I haven't
visited the website yet. More info to follow, but there is zero
information on the web about it at this point.

This is the second time I have subscribed to this list, and I'm about ready
to cancel again.I am just sick and tired from wading through all those
messages that have nothing to say, relative to the purpose of the list.
I post way more answers than questions, and I suspect all the noise on this
list has driven off a lot more people who would be a big help to you if you
would just keep quiet unless you can make a real contribution. If you
want to carry on a cutesy conversation with someone else, why dont you
reply privately instead of continually posting spam to the whole list?
Or, if this is the cutesy list, can someone recommend a moderated NT admin
list that I can subscribe?I'm looking for serious, professional
discussion for my investment in time.

Thanks - DR

Pricing starts at just $1999 for a 3-user version. Add a

So, I can pay $1,500 fro 3 individual licenses or you will bundle them for

It requires $1999 for a 3 user license, then $499 for *additional* single

So you have to also buy the Site license and then you still have to pay $500
more for purchasing 3 licenses at one time? Seems like a deal. :) Does
the Site License maybe come bundled in the 3-pack? Is that the difference?

Sorry Dave. My enthusiasm was a little premature. Some people have got the
synchronisation process to run under a secure context or have or have
granted access to another folder location which synchs with wwwroot
independently, but out of the box, Dreamweaver does require access to
wwwroot.

I think ftp with write only access is still necessary without other coding.

Good to hear. How do I setup for them to publish. Frontpage had a

Excellent product. Makes FrontPage look like... well... like FrontPage.
Get Dreamweaver Ultradev!

Dreamweaver will work the same way. He can have his website on his local
machine and have it synchronise to the published server.

My web person wants to change from frontpage to dreamweaver to publish to my
IIS 4.0 server. Anyone have any experience with this?
Front page allows me to grant permissions to publish without share and
directory perms. Will Dreamweaver work the same way or do I have to grant
rights to the wwwroot folder directly? Thanks for any info.
