Re: User profile sync service - SharePoint 2010

2015-01-11 Thread Maxine Harwood
Try using a log viewer to monitor the logs and then start a sync from Central
admin. I have had issues where the service was trying to recreate certificates.
In sp 2013 I used the same method to find issues eventually traced back to sccm.

Trying to sync and viewing the logs should give you some answers.

RE: SPS2010 - custom views

2014-08-26 Thread Maxine Harwood
I've experienced the same thing myself and didn't find a solution . in the
end I created a xlst list view web part in the page to get the exact
formatting I wanted.

You could try converting it to an xlst list view on the page, see if that
gives you more options?

Subject: SPS2010 - custom views

Hi guys,

I've created a custom view of a document library using the "modify view in
SharePoint Designer" (a bit of xml and xsl customization to move things
around).

It shows up fine in designer, and when I change the view in the browser it
also seems to work fine.

However, if I then add that library web part to a page, and try change the
view to my custom view, it throws a hissy fit. Does anyone have any ideas?

This is my custom view in my library:

Adding the library web part to a page shows the standard view, despite
changing the settings.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

RE: repair of sp2013 fails? help?

2014-07-19 Thread Maxine Harwood
Thanks for the reply - I should have sent out a notice to say I had found
the issue - but it was 4am and I was tired - forgot :)

The problem ended up being that someone had deleted the site collection!
this was an accidental deletion, but I cannot believe that a user can delete
the root site collection, without at least lots of bells and whistles going
off. I think it great that in SharePoint 2013 you can delete a site with
subsites, but the root site collection - surely there should be some alarm
bells ringing somewhere when you initiate this - from the site collection
itself (i.e. not central admin)!

Anyway, turns out that the fix was simple, just running 2 lines of
PowerShell code restored the site collection and we were all back up.

Hi Maxine,

What do you mean by the server fails?

Does it boot up? Can you load CA or any sites? Any error messages in the
browser, Event viewer or ULS logs?

Has anyone admitted to doing anything exceeedingly stupid while you ere
away? :)

It's highly unlikely to be database corruption.

If you can't load anything or run a repair, you might have to conisder a
reinstall and db attach...as a last resort.

Paul

ironically, on my return from the australian sharepoint conference 2014, my
clients sharepoint server fails just hours after i get back to the office.

i suspect a corruption in the database itself but tried to run a repair of
sharepoint as my first serious repair option (after an iisreset and reboot
of all servers).

when trying to repair, i get an error message - the file
'conversion.cultures.office.odf' cannot be installed because the file cannot
be found in the cabinet file 'patch.cab'. this could indicate a network
error, an error reading from the cd rom or a problem with this package.

any solutions on how i might try a repair of the sharepoint server?

SP2013 service pack 1?

any ideas

Well that's truly discouraging.

I could ask the client to re-work all their documents so that the business
name in the footer isn't formatted as H1.

But I'd much prefer to bash SharePoint until it does what it advertises. :P

. I'm running SP1

. I've re-ordered the mapped crawled properties for Title so that
TermTitle is first.

. I've run a full crawl.

No change.

All these documents have valid SharePoint titles. >From what I can discern

Last resort will be deleting the MetadataExtractorTitle and Office:2

Opening infath forms in the browser from content query web part

2013-02-24 Thread Maxine Harwood
I have a content query web part that has been working for some time. Last week
(and prior to applying the feb cu), the cqwp stopped opening forms in the
browser window.

To make it work in the first place, I had to edit the xslt stylesheet and
append the parameters to open in the browser
(&ClientInstalled=true&DefaultItemOpen=1).

The file opens in the browser in Firefox. In IE, if I copy the link and paste
it in the address bar, it works fine. But if I click on the link i am now
getting a dialogue:
Open Document
Some files can harm your computer. If the file information below looks
suspicious, or you do not fully trust the source, do not open the file.
File name: FormServer.aspx
From: SiteName

Any suggestions?

Think it might be a setting in IE? Occurring on multiple pc's with different
versions of IE

Thanks! The problem described wasn't identical to my issue, but similar and the

Thanks, but its not one web part, it's web parts and views across the site
collection... No consistency. It's on lists and libraries as well.

Uls viewer have the logs have the message about the missing field guid, but
when u run it again, the message doesn't appear again... It's random when and
where in the site collection it occurs.

I'm not sure where to look for this, the issue is affecting views on multiple
lists/libraries, some with nintex workflow (no sharepoint workflow) and some
without. Could this change on one list affect others?

Help with troubleshooting

2013-02-20 Thread Maxine Harwood
Any advice or tips would be appreciated! Getting to the end of my bag of tricks.

We have had Sharepoint 2010 running and stable for 18 months. Late last week,
we started having some random issues in our site collection that include
* errors showing views and dvwp. Logs indicate that the site failed to cache
the field {various GUIDs}, Refreshing the page (sometimes twice) and the view
works again. The same view might open without error next time... There is no
consistency on which views across the site will fail
* attempting to open the item menu results in a message stating that the item
has been moved or deleted, refresh the page to try again. As above, refreshing
2-3 times and the item menu will open again.
* conditional nintex workflows running when the criteria hasn't been met

Most significantly, there is no apparent similarities between where these
occur, different lists, library's, different sites. Across the board issues.

There were no scheduled server or application changes before the issue started.

I have tried rebooting, and a Sharepoint repair. I only have the one site
collection, but the central admin isn't experiencing any issues. I suspect it's
an issue in the content database.

As this is a production environment, that is still mostly functional (though
through a few refreshes) I am planning a course of action to run over the
weekend, I would appreciate any suggestions on what I could look at. I am
considering exporting the content database, deleting it and then creating a new
one before importing, thinking it might be an issue in the content DB. Running
out of ideas

Thanks for your time
Maxine

Adding to fulltextsearch

2013-02-10 Thread Maxine Harwood
Sharepoint 2010 enterprise, no FAST search.

Have a custom field I have added as a managed propery, and can retrieve this
field in my search results, but it's not part of the full text index?

Field is called GenericNotes. Field is returned in the search results but when
I try to search for content stored the field, there are no results.

E.g one item in my list has GenericNotes that contains the word "test". If I
use the search centre (custom page) to search, k=test* I do not get the item in
my results, but if i search for the managed property (k= generic notes:test*)
the item is returned in the results.

The field is a multiline text field (rich text). When I display the XML
returned by the search, I can see the text is being included in the XML,

It looks like the field isn't included in the full text search?

I have used powershell to try and include it in the fulltextsearch and
completed a full crawl but it still isn't returning.
(Set-SpEnterpriseSearchMetadataManagedProperty -identity... -FullTextQueriable
1).

Any suggestions?

Maxine.

Check the URL that is used? It should have a clientinstalled parameter and a
defaultopen parameter (not in front of a pc right now). I've had issues when
opening from email links etc, if it doesn't have both parameters, it's hit and

Re: missing search results

2012-02-12 Thread Maxine Harwood
Hi guys,

Thanks for these tools. I can confirm that the files are in the index. I still
can't get the files to return in my search results.

I have 5 documents with the files named BKL-64.401.docx to BKL-64.405.docx
(though 2 of the files are doc). Using search explorer, creating a contains
keyword search *with wildcards* for the term "BKL-64.40*" (i.e. WHERE CONTAINS
("'BLK-64.40*'")). I get one result (BLK-64.401). I can Modify this query and
return the others only if I provide the full file name (less the file
extension), e.g WHERE CONTAINS ("'BLK-64.405*'") gives me a single correct
result.

If I search for "BKL*'" I get multiple results, however I am still missing the
reslts in question, BKL-64.402 to BKL-64.405.

I could post the full SQL but can confirm that the count is set to show up to
100 records.

Can't think of what else to look for? Why is the wildcards not matching all?

missing search results

2012-02-06 Thread Maxine Harwood
I have several items in a library that are not appearing in search results.
there are a range of documents I have identified as missing, I can confirm
the following

. the library where the documents are held has major and minor
versioning enabled, no content approval. the items have been published and
are not in draft. the documents that are showing are also published and not
in draft.

. search results return only some documents within the same library,
the missing items inherit permissions from the parent, this is the same
setting for items that are included.

. site search is not disabled (other items from same library are
showing)

. documents are not checked out

. documents in MS Word doc or docx format (there might be others
affected, but these are the few I am testing). search is returning both doc
and docx files.

. search is keyword search. search for phrase that is contained
within both missing and included files (the files are very similar in
content and have many keywords). the keyword search is also the metadata
title of the document.

. checked the crawl log and can't see any issues or errors relating
to the library

open to suggestions on where to look now.

Re: problem customising library editform

2012-02-05 Thread Maxine Harwood
Thanks for the suggestions, the library was created in the UI, no custom code
at all.

I will try saving it to wsp, I'm suspicious it's related to a column in the
library.

it looks like it is definitely the library. I created a template from the
library (no content), created a new blank library from the template, and the

any suggestions on how I could try and identify the issue?

was upgrading to Nintex Workflow 2010. So far, so good. It's only been a
week, but the actual upgrade from Workflow 2007 to 2010 was relatively easy;
all current workflows (built in 2007) work fine; however with it only being
a week since we started using it extensively, I can't give a definitive
answer.

One thing is for sure, their support is brilliant. Had a couple of cases
where hotfixes were tailor made for us J

I think meeting workspaces will be the end of me. it was bad enough in
MOSS2007 but SP2010 (enterprise) seems to be even worse (if that was
possible).

Is anyone else having issues with workspaces saved as templates? My
current engagement would like to use meeting workspaces in a big way. We
have done a lot of work on creating customised workspaces that we have
saved as templates. BUT, when the workspaces are created from the
template, the setting "Share List Items Across All Meetings (Series Items)
" to set a given list or library as a series item is reset - so that they
are back to the default - NO.

I had hoped it would be resolved after SP1 and the June CU - but it's
still an issue?? is it just this environment. A quick Google didn't find
any other results - which I find surprising.

I've looked at the definitions within the solution - but can't see where
this property is set?

Any ideas.

As site collection administrator, I can activate the feature without error

Thanks Maxine, I had actually just opened that page 5 minutes ago. I like
the below comment:

if all you need to do is to add the asterisk to the query, then it's
possible to add it in the confuguration of the federated location you are
using. Since even local searches are routed through the federation layer, as
documented here: msdn.microsoft.com/.../ee558338.aspx
<http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee558338.aspx> - "The search
result Web Parts in SharePoint Enterprise Search are built on top of the
federated search object model." - then you can add the asterisk to the query
template of the "Local Search Results" location, like so: {searchTerms}* .
It seems to me you'll achieve pretty much the same, no programming needed.

RE: error editing in datasheet

2011-08-14 Thread Maxine Harwood
Thanks for the response Carl! This does work around this weird issue. I'm
now wondering if anyone else has had the same problem?

Do you know what tool modified the content type? Technically there should
not have been any changes made on this server as I was on leave. I would
love to track down and resolve this issue.

Using SharePoint manager I can see the test list I created has 2 content
types associated with it - item and folder. Item has only has 2 fields
(title and content type) and folder has a few more (content type, folder
child count, item child count, name, title). Name is listed as required and
I can't change this - or delete the folder content type.

I'm doing some comparisons between dev. and production at the moment - but
any suggestions would be appreciated.

Maxine,

For some reason I cannot reply to the list - but we encountered a similar
issue a little while ago when the list content type had been modified by a
3rd party tool.

If you goto a new list in datasheet view and add the 'name' column in - you
should be able to add new rows to your list. The name column will change to
a number after submitting the row to the server though.. (it will look
something like 1._000 or thereabouts..)

Whilst not a fix - check out your content types and that may give you the
answer.

Hi all,

Just back from 2 weeks leave to find that in my production environment, all
lists now error when adding a new row via the datasheet. The message states:

"columns that require data are not included in this view. If you want to
edit rows that are missing data in these column, or add new rows, you must
first add the required column to the view".

All required fields are in the view (in fact there has been no changes to
the view). The problem has only started to occur in the past 2 weeks.

To test this is a server wide issue, I created a new custom list. Didn't
customise this list, so the only required field is Title. I can add a row
via the form, but changing the view to datasheet and inserting a row results
in the error message.

The issue is not apparent on my development environment which is a snapshot
of the server approx. 8 weeks ago?

I'm scheduling a restart of the server to see if this might resolve the bug
but wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue?

A sharepoint workflow cannot be attached to user profiles - as they are not
part of sharepoint (strictly speaking - the service is using its own
database, and not using sharepoint objects such as sites and lists).

In the past we managed to work around that by overriding the control that
renders the user profile edit in the edit page. Our control still did
everything the built-in control did, but would also add a piece of code when
the user has clicked save. that piece of code could either trigger a windows
workflow, or do some actions directly.

However, if you are looking for an approval workflow you are out of luck
unless you develop something very sophisticated - as our control as
described only acts AFTER the chages were made to the user profile database,
which is not what an approval workflow is there to do.

The error occurs when trying to view earlier meeting dates and stops the
user from viewing any date but the most recent. Here is the scenario:

RE: default content type

2011-06-13 Thread Maxine Harwood
Its any changes but in my example below - I was setting the value of a text

It isn't reproducible on new documents, just documents uploaded previously.
I might look at writing a power shell script to set the column and see if

suggestion on search customisation

2011-05-31 Thread Maxine Harwood
Interested to hear the groups thoughts on the best way to implement these
search customisations.

Have a library with multiple content types and specific meta data.
SharePoint 2010 standard (but preparing to enable enterprise features) - no
FAST.

Want a search function for the library. Have configured a search scope and
works fine. Now want to customise the search experience.

. Would like to offer custom filters - both free text and checkboxes
and/or dropdown options

. Need to customise search results to show additional meta data and
grouping etc.

In MOSS 2007 I set up a similar search experience, using xslt to customise
the search results. Started looking at this in 2010 but it just seems too
complex for a simple solution (maybe I'm just out of practice). The other
option is to customise the search web part/s - but is this overkill? My
other thought is just to create a single web part to perform the full
functionality?

any suggestions or thoughts on best practice?

Yes, just had a chat to our ISA admin and will test redir, looks like the
best option atm? It's internal Intra, though temp url not really an option.
Do / should I need to make any changes to Alt Access Mapping on the temp
server?(guess I'll find out shortly!)

Webpart looks handy - though not for this situation. I need to redirect
users at the root URL as production will be offline.

Failing that, are you able to just provide users with the temp URL, or is

SharePoint 2010 standard search scope

2011-04-13 Thread Maxine Harwood
SharePoint standard 2010. Trying to create a scope with a rule to limit the
results to a single list.

Issue: the "Content Source" Scope Rule type isn't shown. Can't find anything
about why it's not there. Thought that it might be a limitation of
"standard" but the MS blogs don't mention any difference between enterprise
(not fast) and standard search and the MSDN article I found doesn't mention
enterprise http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee792872.aspx . Client is
currently evaluating enterprise cost benefit, but I can't find any reference
to suggest that this is an enterprise feature anyway.

I'd be happy with a work around, but I can't even add the ContentSource
managed property to the property query. Even if its enabled, it won't show
as it is one of the many marked as Not "Retrievable" like contentType-
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepoint2010programming/t
hread/d4e168b5-0d5a-4cf5-aec0-682ec21ec896/. The difference is with
ContentType I can create my own property and use that - but there is no
mappings to the ContentSource property that I can replicate to retrieve
this.

Can't figure out what's going on.

This should be dead simple!

I have a basic list, created a view that has one level of grouping, and an
item limit of 100. But, it is always show with pages of 30? Checked the view
settings, its still set to 100. Edited in SharePoint designer, its set at
30. Changed to 100 and saved. No change in the view. Even used SharePoint

on 30 records.

Any ideas? The same view has an ungrouped view (all items) set to 50 and
that works fine. If I remove the grouping, it works. The grouped column is a
lookup column but I can't see how that could have any impact.

RE: suggestions on custom implementation

2011-04-07 Thread Maxine Harwood
Thanks Jason,

That was my first thought for another project, but in that experience I
found you can't use the xlstlistview to show data from a parent site (even
though you could in 2007!), you need to connect to SOAP service (although
there may be other ways - this seems to be the most common).

The other issue I have with the XLSTlistview is as soon as you pass
parameters, you lose the ability to filter the list (like OOTB views),
instead it shows "This Column type cannot be filtered". The filtering works
until the moment you add parameters. I did some research some time ago, and
found others having the same issue and haven't found a workaround.

In my earlier project, I was able to implement this successfully - but
without the build in list heading filters

to the list in the other site. That will give you full functionality to sort
filter etc and you can map url parameters to filter values.

Couldn't you simply modify the list view by adding a CEWP with a history
back URL?

Otherwise your options might include - a DVWP with hard-coded workflow URL
which appends the item ID; or a reusable RadGrid with same; or a SharePoint
DataGrid within a custom web part.

Would like to hear how you might implement this.

SharePoint Server 2010 Standard!

Problem:

===

Parent site has a custom library

Subsites (and child sites of these sites) need to have a 'view' of the
library based on some criteria. View should have same functionality as a
standard view would have (ability to sort or filter as well as edit or view
the properties, start workflows etc.). its fine to add a link in the
navigation to a page passing parameters.

Caveat: the view should appear within the subsite - not as a link to the
parent site.

I would prefer to use parameters to obtain a reusable page/part - as there
is likely to be many changes over the next few months.

Possible implementations:

===

I have investigated options to solve this issue, but each seem to have its
own issues and I can't find the perfect fit.

Using a link to a view doesn't meet the requirements, as the preferred
solution should not take them out of the subsite (for navigation etc.).

I've looked at using an aspx page in the _layouts directory to show the
view, but am having difficulty getting the full functionality of OOTB views.
I figure there must be an easier way (and cheaper than upgrading to
enterprise!). I have briefly looked into creating a custom web part - but
not sure if it will give me anything extra, or even a Silverlight web part.
I have played with the content editor web part and have used this in the
past - but it's not perfect either.

I have a server on a farm I wish to remove. The server is no longer
available.

I go to the Servers in Farm, can see the server listed with the MS
SharePoint foundation database. There is another MS SharePoint foundation
database server also listed and the 'Configuration Database Server' for the
farm shows this alternate server- not the one I'm trying to remove.

The other DB server is not running and there is no content stored on there
that I am aware of.

I attempt to 'Remove Server' and get the following error:

An object in the SharePoint administrative framework,
"SPDatabaseServiceInstance", could not be deleted because other objects
depend on it. Update all of these dependants to point to null or different
objects and retry this operation. The dependant objects are as follows:
SPWebService

Using the SharePoint_config database, I can see the guid that relates to
this server, and can see that it is the parentID of another object - but not
sure what sort of object it is?

After doing a backup, I tried to remove the child object = but I cant delete
it either, I get this

I can't find any objects that list the SPwebservice guid as a parent db.

It had been pretty rock solid however we had an issue a couple of weeks ago
were it looked to have stopped indexing, but after resetting all the crawled
content and running a full crawl it started indexing again.

We have a number of PDF's in Japanese characters and English it handles this
quite well also.

how would you implement this?

2011-03-30 Thread Maxine Harwood
My client has a document library in use with multiple content types. I've
been asked to add a facility where some documents (a new content type) can
be linked in the library rather than uploaded. Easy!

But, the link is not one the user can browse to. It's a link within another
application .e.g.: http://AThirdPartyApp/getDocument.aspx?docID=1234.

The "docID" is easy for the end user to find.

Ideally, I would like to prompt the user to enter the meta data and the
DocID, then generate the URL based on the information given, but the default
_NewLink.aspx prompts for the document link first?

So. with a dozen different ideas going through my head, I'm wondering how
the group would implement this?

It seems I can't simply a new form for a document library in SPD (SPD isn't
giving me an option for a NEW form in this document library).

I could build my own completely custom form for adding the data, and add
this to the ribbon? I think this is the best solution, but also the most
time consuming. Before I started coding, I thought I would see what other
suggestions might be around?

Another option could be to modify the _layouts/NewLink.aspx but I am
reluctant to modify OOTB pages unless there is no better alternative?

Is there a better or more efficient way?

RE: Deploying custom app page on sp2010

Thanks, but it was set to Any CPU out of the box.

>From what I have read this afternoon - it's just not possible.

To enable IIS to run a 32bit dll - I need to change the settings in the app
pool to "enable 32 bit applications" - but this then 'breaks' SharePoint.

I have the solution working outside of SharePoint - which will satisfy my
immediate need, but I would be interested to hear of anyone who is using a
32bit dll running within SharePoint code?

Thanks for everyone who has contributed to this!

dll's within 64 bit apps by changing the IIS app pool to permit 32 bit apps

Thanks! I tried that yesterday but was getting an error when I deploy to the
GAC (and web app deploys but doesnt 'use' the dll) it says it was expecting a
'assembly manifest'. Without this, I can't deploy the dll to the GAC.

The dll is a third party product. I can add the dll to the web applications bin
folder but it still won't find the dll (I can see it's there). It's app if the
app is expecting a path to the dll, but I shouldnt need to add this??

third party app and works as a standard aspx page, but bringing it into a
'sp2010 application page', the dll is not being included on the deployed
package and as a consequence, I get a 'file not found' error when I run the
aspx. Any suggestions or sites that will help me to deploy the all to
sharepoint? I've searched but the search terms i'm using are getting me
nowhere!!

RE: Top Menu To Align Right (SP2010)

2011-03-17 Thread Maxine Harwood
Did you start with v4.master, starter.master or build from the ground up?
Maybe post the code (or this part) so we can see where everything is?

Another option maybe to add additional divs to wrap your menu - but it would
depend on your current master page.

RE: Workflows, Stats and ... Videos!

2011-03-10 Thread Maxine Harwood
I was at the same session at the SharePoint conference, it was one of my
favourite sessions. I think it was the session by Brian Farnhill and he has
some information on his blog - http://blog.brianfarnhill.com/. He may be
willing to share more if you contact him directly J

I believe there is a codeplex project for the analytics side of things but
cant find the name of it - it was on twitter. codeplex has well as lots of
parts you could tap into for the project as a whole.

You should have gone to the Australian SharePoint Conference. One of the
tracks was a deep dive developer session on building a YouTube like
interface within SharePoint. J

No source available as yet but we tried.

Hiya,

I have a client who is looking at using WebEx to host videos and track
number of hits (like youtube) and who viewed them.

I'm looking at using SharePoint to host videos instead. I've been looking
into how we can meet requirements, such as show how many times a video has
been viewed and information on who viewed it and when.

How can I best achieve this as I can't see a solution that I can recommend
online?

I was thinking maybe if I had a SharePoint list which is populated via a
workflow once a video has been viewed fully and record information such as
time, user name and video URL?

Thanks,

Friday afternoon XlstListView question

2011-02-24 Thread Maxine Harwood
The question:

Is there an recommended way of getting the parent folder name in to a
XsltListView web part?

The history:

I don't usually use folders in document libraries but believe that it is the
best way to control this given document library. The library has hundreds of
files sorted into various content types. Files belong to a unique group
(multiple content types per group) and only members of the group can edit
the files but anyone can read. The documents are subject to frequent change,
and as this is a new system, the content types and views will also be
changed often (though experience).

I am creating folders (and subfolders)for each group, and setting
permissions at the folder level. This is in preference to setting up
individual document libraries for each or using fine grained permissions at
the file level.

I would be interested if anyone has any alternatives ideas.

regardless of the login details I provide (mine, or the farm admin account)
I can't get the page to load.

Any suggestions on what could be wrong here? It seems so simple - but I am
