RE: Vivitar Series 1 28/1.9 Lens Focusing
Hi Steve and all Vivitar users, yes it's normal and due to the floating element. IIRC, the rear element is the floating one. If you turn the focus ring, you can see that from a specific point, the rear element is moving ( or was it the front element ?). As it gets hold in normal position by springs, you have to apply the extra force from the specific point of focussing to stretch this springs. As I openend some time ago my sample, I know a little bit more than one can see from the outside. Bernd H. Steve Larson wrote: > Normal. OT: Mercury 625 batteries?
Hey all. I realize this might be slightly off topic. However, I have recently acquired some older rangefinder cameras that use the mercury 625 batteries. Does anyone know of a source to purchase these? Is it legal to ship them to me in the US? Any chance a list member might have some for sale, at a reasonable price? I only need 2 at the momemt. I'm not thrilled about paying $17 for the two that are currently listed on Ebay. Re: Cool portraiture (what do you think Shel?)
Not too impressed with what I've seen thus far. I just looked through one portfolio, the homeless. The photos are cliché, and show little connection between the photographer and the people he was photographing. Overall, I was not impressed. IMO, the most important aspect of portraiture, regardless of the type, is that the photographer and the subject have some sort of connection. Re: 200/2.5K deal at Adorama
Having had the good fortune recently to stumble upon, and acquire, this lens, I'd suggest that it's one sweet piece of glass. It's a wonderful focal range, not too big and not too small, so it handles well. I'll be getting the first roll of film back from the lab in a few days so I might be able to comment on the color aspects of it, but tonight I developed a roll of D 100, the last few frames taken with this lens. Very nice, sharp negatives. "Paul F. New Tools In The Bag
The later part of last month I indicated I was going to buy a new AF camera and a couple of lenses. Several members of the list gave me some things to think about and I am indebted to those who participated in the discussion. My first inclination was to go with a PZ-1p because of its 4.3 fps and 1/250 sec. flash sync. I have to thank Wheatfield and Mark Dalal for suggesting a look at the Nikon F100. That is one beautiful feature laden camera that really feels good in my relatively large hands. It was a tough decision, but I stayed with my original selection of the PZ-1p primarily because of the 30+ Pentax lenses I have laying around here. I located a new one in a box at Adorama delivered with a 4-year Pentax warranty for about $515. The one thing I liked about the F100 was the accessory battery grip that provides a lot of leverage when using big lenses. Since they don't make one for the PZ-1p, I made my own and it really makes a difference. At the suggesting of Mark Dalal, a new resident of San Antonio BTW, and comments from Mark Cassino, I bought the Sigma 100-300/f:4 EX from B&H. I also bought a LN- SMC 28-105/4.5-5.6 power zoom from KEH. I shot three rolls of Portra NC 160 and 400 with the big zoom Sunday morning at a local dog club training session. That is one sweet lens...sharp, great contrast and excellent color. Re: Vivitar Series 1 28/1.9 Lens Focusing
I just checked my 28/1.9K and confirmed what Shel reported: the change in focusing effort is normal. I think Steve Larson called it a clutch. Perhaps it is related to the floating elements, even though, as you point out, no such two-stage effort is found in the floating-element 28/2K. If you're interested, I have an Adorama-brand black metal circular threaded 58mm wide-angle hood that I bought for this lens. It measures 93mm (3.7 inches) in diameter by 22mm (0.8 in.) deep. $8 shipped. (I now have an original Vivitar hood.) Paul Franklin Stregevsky - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re[2]: 67 & batteries in LOOONG exposures
Frantisek, I have found that two things cause enablement for the 67 system. First is to hold and use it. For those who enjoy the old manual days (early K thru M), the feel and usage of the system is nothing short of wonderful. Those liking the Super Program and later bodies might like the 645n better. But, oh, the feeling of using that big, smooth system is so enjoyable to me. With the 67II you even have more metering options (Center Weighted, Spot and Matrix). The second and perhaps bigger enablement factor is looking at the negs/prints or slides from this system. Simply astounding! There is such a marked difference between that and 35mm. I used to pursue the very best optical quality lenses I could and the slowest, finest grained film to produce good shots. The 67 size has it all over 35mm. It makes it very easy to choose when to use the 67 - whenever possible! There are still some cases where 35mm works better, but image quality suffers. Once bitten, it is hard to resist. RE: EI-2000 digital camera
Steven, It's a pretty nice digital camera. I have the HP 912, which is the same thing. The camera is a joint effort betwen HP and Pentax. It falls into the consumer catagory of cameras (IMHO) like the low end Pentax SLR's. Has many of the same features. The zoom is a little slow, but gets the job done. The digital output is nice and clean, give nice high res jpg's of tiff output. The major drawbacks are very limited accessories and options. If you like lots of gadgets this is not for you. Doesn't compeate with the other major brand bodies. It's starting to shows it's age with the 2.2 MP sensor, but I still get some nice 8x10's out of it. Better than some digital P&S's, but below a true digital SLR. RE: Pentax 6x7
Hi Ali, You can check here for instructions on repairing a broken chain: http://www.salzgeber.at/articles/6x7chainRepair.html As Mark Roberts notes, I had this problem with my 6x7 and was able to repair it myself. You could probably find a suitable piece of silver chain at a jewelry store or jewelry repair shop. You'll need a piece 4 cm in length. Might be more difficult to find another aperture coupling ring, but I'd think these would be quite difficult to break and would generally not need replacement. You might want to watch eBay for a good price on a broken camera, then use it for extra parts -- or possibly check with Pentax in Englewood, Colorado to see if they have such an item in stock. Hope this helps. Re[2]: (2): film in the fridge?
That's news to me. I've never heard anything about it. I wonder if it is related to specific films. Certainly most professional films are refrigerated by manufacturer specification. I have used both the A 2X-S and the older T6-2X with several prime lenses, and I have found these TC's to be both very good (considering, of course, that a TC is always a compromise), and very difficult to tell apart optically. However, although I also have a Tokina AT-X 100-300/4 (a ~very~ good zoom, by the way), I have to confess that I have never used either of those TC's (or the A 1.4X-S, either) with that zoom. So, I can't provide a specific report for you, Erik, but I would suggest that either the A 2X-S or the T6-2X would probably work with the 100-300/4 as well as would any TC. Vivitar Series 1 28/1.9 Lens Focusing
I just picked up a K-mount Vivitar Series 1 28/1.9 lens. It seems to be in very nice condition, nicely finished in look and feel (a typical early Series 1 lens, I would say), except for one possible thing that concerns me: When focusing from infinity down to it closest focus distance point of about 0.28 meters, there is a slight change in focus feel that occurs at about 0.41 meters. From about 0.41 meters to infinity, the focus seems just a little bit stiffer, while from 0.41 meters to 0.28 meters, the focus seems just a little easier. The transition at 0.41 meters seems abrupt (even if subtle), although it does not feel rough or anything that suggests trouble, per se. It's just that I have never had a lens that exhibited an obvious (if subtle) change in focus feel at one focus distance before. Perhaps it's just that the focus mechanism "changes modes" at 0.41 meters, or that a floating element comes into play, or something (???). (Neither my K 28/2 or A 28/2 exhibit any such change in feel while focusing.) Does anyone else out there have one of these critters to confirm that this effect is "normal"? Thanks. A good opportunity (what I've been doing lately)
Hi all, I just want to share my great satisfaction... As Juan Bhuler I've been lurking for some time now but the reason was I'd been working on a very interesting project (and a paid assignment). A friend of mine had to provide the organization for an event here in Roma called "Pelagos, 4th festival of the Submarine Image" and closely related to the "Festival of the Submarine Image" in Antibes, France. He asked me to provide images of the coastal part of the province of Roma. I've been wandering around the zone for a few weeks and shot a whole reel of Fuji Provia 100F (what a nice film). Besides I selected about a hundred of shots from my archive. In the end 42 images were selected and 35 of them got digitally printed on 70x100 cm. (about 32x40") boards which covered the entire inside wall of the Province stand, about 2x6 mt. (2,2x10 yds.). Of course my name was there and I was really pleased to see they were appreciated by both the visitors and by the competent people (photographers and tv/cinema people) visiting and competing or judging the photo/video contests being held. I also got compliments from Mr. Daniel Mercier, founder and president of the Antibes Festival! Moreover the organization is also negotiating their presence at the 29th edition of the French Festival and they want me to provide them the images for a continuous slide show they're planing to have in their stand to promote the roman coastal region. As a bonus the shots were filmed for an italian pay TV travel channel and will be broadcasted soon. All in all a very tiring and demanding job but it got me a big satisfaction and I'm more and more thinking about "going pro"...who knows. As for Pentax content I've been shooting with the Z1-p and about all the lenses I have but mainly the 100/2.8 FA, 50/1.7 A, 28/2.8 A, 24/2,8 K, the newly acquired Tokina 100-300/4 formerly belonging to Mark Cassino and the Tokina 28-105 AF. Polarizers were used rather extensively. Tripod and monopod, both Manfrotto, were also important. A little flash was threw in now and then. The images were printed at 300 dpi up to about 40x60 cm. (16x20") and are all quite sharp. I plan to put up a separate gallery for these shots on my site ASAP. Thanks for reading. Ciao, Flavio - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: (2): film in the fridge?
I quess nows the time to ask my question, although Shel may have answered it with his freezer comment. I measured the temp in my home fridge and its about +5 to 6 C(+48 Far).Is that to cold or is it ok. The two places i buy my Portra, Provia etc seem to have their store fridge around + 55 Far(+12 C) BTW I let the film climatize at least 3-4 hours,or overnight if i can plan ahead. Non MLU 6x7
A question for the Brotherhood: I received a couple of fixer-upper come "parts" 6x7's in the mail today, and while they are both definietly non MLU, there are a number of detail differences between them. One is serial # 40042xx while the other is 40348xx, so presumably they are 30600 units apart. The most obvious differences are the film reel locks on the bottom plate, which are a the same as the battery case on the newee model, but on the older one are simply moved by thumb pressure on a textured surface which looks kind of like a microprism grid. The bottom plate is different on both to accomodat the change. The battery covers are different too (more satin chrome on one) and the wind lever is also different. Some of the lettering is pale blue on one and pale green on the other and the numbering on the shutter speed dial is thicker on one than on the other. Does anyone know when these sort of changes were made? Is this a case of a mark 1 and mark 2 version of the non MLU 6x7, or were there a number of variations in its life? Just wondering... Re: Cost of Black and White Film Processing?
Hi Harald. Just looking at an old bill from May. Process 2 rolls of 36 $10.00 Proofs,4x6 times 72 $46.80 Add taxes $65.32 Total Above are in Canadian funds Us would be about $40.00 Dave Begin Original Message From: "harald_nancy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Mon, 10 Jun 2002 18:22:08 -0700 To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Cost of Black and White Film Processing? Just got back from a trip, and took a few rolls of black and white Tri-X. First time I've used black and white in many years. The sticker shock, Kits Camera wants $16.00 to develop and print a 36 exposure b&w roll. Is that a normal price? Last time I used black and white, it was less expensive than color. Does anyone know a more cost effective lab for b&w film processing? I'm not planning to develop and print my own b&w. Thanks for any info. Harald - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Converter for Tokina AT-X 100-300/4?
Hi all, I'm back on the list after some time, although I have been checking the mail archive frequently - just to stay tuned! Now, I have a question. I'm looking for a good 1.4 converter to my old MF Tokina AT-X 100-300/4 zoom. Which high-quality teleconverter gives good results with that lens? I have tried with the Pentax AF 1.7, and I didn't like the results, at least not stopped down to 5.6. Thanks in advance, Erik - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: media philosophy debate
Mike, Think about the opposite. Have you ever gone somewhere with someone and then shown them the pictures upon your return, only to have them say, "Where was that?" "I never saw that!" The camera sharpens my vision and experiences in the world. It rarely diminishes them. Regards, Bob S. [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << Another problem I have is that the camera intrudes on my own reality.I was therefore able to see the event, in the perspective of the landscape, in its entirety. Instead of a portion of it through the eyepiece. My benefit, potential viewers of my photograph's loss. If I had any "artistic" skills, I could reproduce the event as a painting. Now it is gone, except in my mind - which is, by the way, full of these events. Anyone else find this paradoxical? >> - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: 67 & batteries in LOOONG exposures
The external battery pack takes the same battery. It plugs and latches in and the original cover/holder are inserted into a socket at the end of the cord. Re: media philosophy debate
Sorry, but I couldn't see where the paradox is... is it that reality is only at full when you are not looking at it through the viewfinder, but you are supposed to be trying to portray it thus? Don't forget that your own views of reality are mediated by your own personal experiences, culture, society, time... This is quite clear in your example of the German photographer during nazism. I'm not sure if it takes AA or the standard battery but it'd be easy to just cut the cable and put a 4xAA holder in its place. Re: film in the fridge?
I put all my film in the fridge. I figure it's a way of being certain it won't be subjected to excessive temperature. When removing it, I try to let it sit for an hour before opening the can or wrapper. However, I have used rolls almost immediately, even in warm humid weather, with no apparent effect. I think the film warms to air temperature rather quickly and any condensation dissipates rapidly. Of course it's better to wait.
