The real solution to this problem, of course, is to use fill flash to throw some light into the band members face. Fill flash really is an underutilized feature. It's a lot easier to use a flash than to try to fix the image in photoshop... Vic
OT Polaroid Land Camera SX-70
I recently got a nice Polaroid Land Camera SX-70 from a friend and used it over the holidays. It's great fun and takes pretty good pictures too. I have discovered the usefulness of these cameras when they are matched together with today's high tech scanners etc. Take a picture, out it pops. Put it in the scanner and within seconds you're working with it. In the past, they were limited because you had no negative and no way to easily blow up the images... I am hoping to explore the artistic opportunities with my little polaroid this winter. I'll post some results when and if I get some good ones... If you have never seen what artists can do with one of these, check out this site-- It's fascinating... http://www.cynthiadavis.com/ Vic

OT: Lexmark Z55 vs HP5550 inkjet, Initial Impressions
Well, Lon has read all the drivel on all the websites he could find about inkjet printers and decided to ask Santa for an HP5550 for Christmas to augment the Lexmark, which has taken a sound trouncing from almost all reviewers regarding photo quality. And, Wilhelm slams Lexmark longevity while giving the HP a 73-year rating. I've had the original 3600 DPI Lexmark Z55 since March and have had exactly ZERO problems with it. Even refilling carts is a snap, and yes, I've stooped to using cheap refills more than once. Ink is expensive, and PUG folks have a time-honored tendency to be cheap. Grin. Wifey played Santa this year and on Christmas Evening I spent a cheerful FIVE HOURS coaxing the #*% HP CD-ROM to properly install drivers under Win98. The magic incantation for _this_ particular installation was to uninstall Lexmark, install HP, re-install Lexmark, due perhaps, to both using USB cables. I then printed, on Kodak Premium High Gloss (59 lb), from Elements, a picture of 2 kittens (sharp detail in some fur/whiskers, soft detail elsewhere) using idiot settings: Printer Management, Intent Relative Colorimetric). I'm a fan of idiot settings, BTW. No ICM profiles, monitor calibration with Adobe Gamma only. The HP was using 6 colors in Best Mode, RET. I did not want to force 4800 DPI printing from it because the spooler crashed several times with the HP, something that has never happened with the Lexmark. The Lexmark was using 3 colors in Best Mode. Both were using OEM inks, and both were fed the full 3600 dpi scan (Gold 100 print film, Adobe 98 workspace, levels and mild unsharp mask courtesy of photoshop 5), sized to fit the page. Both prints turned out the exact same size, plus or minus some very small fraction of a millimeter. I gave the prints about 20 minutes to dry, labled the back of each one (which printer), and took them out to the kitchen for judgement by wife, 2 sons and myself. We looked at them for about 5 minutes before making selections. Wife, btw, uses Pentax to create fodder for her BW darkroom, and son #2 is employed in a 1-hour WalGreen photo lab and has a K-1000. All of us picked (gasp) the Lexmark print. Even though one faint pizza wheel mark could be seen if you angled it to the light just right. This was not a color judgement: The colors were about the same in both prints. The Lexmark print appeared to have more contrast and more sharpness. By the way, we did NOT examine the prints with a loupe. What the heck is the point? This may not prove much. One print compared, paper not optimal, etc, etc, etc. But I would have thought, based on what I've read, that the 6-color HP would trounce the 3-color Lexmark on any turf, any shot, any paper. Gonna spend a lot more time the next few days throwing images at both printers. But I know now that I'm not giving the Lexmark away. It spools quicker, is smaller, has a saner paper path, and powers on quicker than the HP. Using the jumbo color cart Lexmark makes available and using third party ink refills, it should be a good proof printer, if nothing else. I'll print to the HP using HP inks and HP Premium Plus paper only when I need longevity, and that's assuming Wilhelm doesn't have his head up his butt as deeply as most of the other experts. -Lon

Question about manual Petaxes.
Hi! I am contemplating (considering?!) buying a used manual focus manual everything Pentax body. My main goal in doing so is to get fully mechanical camera (so that I can use it where I probably wouldn't use my MZ-6) with bright viewfinder (unlike my MZ-6). I hope that after CLA or its equivalent this camera would actually outlive the MZ-6. Currently I am under impression that MX is what would answer my needs. However I wonder whether MX's default focusing screen is as bright/good as that of ME Super. I saw ME Super and liked its screen. Yesterday I saw KX and was amazed by rather dim screen. Pardon my age and hence lack of knowledge, but what is the reason for putting the rather dark circle around the microprism center of the screen? Ultimately, my question is - which fully manual (on meter is operated by batteries) Pentax camera has brightest focusing screen? Alternatively, if MX's default focusing screen is not that good, which replacement focusing screen should I look for? Thanks in advance. --- Boris Liberman www.geocities.com/dunno57 www.photosig.com/viewuser.php?id=38625
Re: has anyone used a pentax stereo adapter?
If you're talking about crossing your eyes, there is an easy way to do this. Arrange the stereo pair normal to your line of vision and hold a pencil about 12 inches from your nose and focus on it. Now move it slowly either forward or backwards, which, depends on how far you have the pictures from your eyes, until they merge. After a few seconds you can take the pencil away and even move your eyes about the virtual image, which ought to occupy the white space between the pair. Make sure you have enough space between the pairs and also be sure they are aligned properly. As a rule, if the pictures are say 10 x 10 cm then you need exactly 10 cm between them. It takes a few minutes to learn to do this. Even wives with built in taciturnity can do it. The space must be white. Date: Tue, 24 Dec 2002 04:43:36 -0800 Hi Tom, They work pretty well, but I agree with Leon about it being more of a fun thing. The biggest disadvantage is that the format forces you to use portrait orientation instead of landscape. The stereo effect works best when there is some foreground subject 4 to 6 feet from the camera. Too close won't work well for your eyes, to far away lessens the stereo 'feel'. A big advantage on the other hand is that it uses the regular filmformat and the slides can be mounted in ordinary frames. I have used it for a while on the MX with the 1.7 50mm with great success. You can attach the stereo adapter for just a few shots on a roll of film if you like. Later on I got me a real stereo camera that makes two landscape-oriented images. It is a russion make called FED stereo. It requires special mounts which take a lot of work to get the slides in properly, but the results are amazing. It is good enough to get those who are interested caught and spending more money on stereo equipment (be warned). It works best on subject 5 to 30 feet in front of the camera and is set to work only with a standard lens. I've tried it on scenics, pets and people all with good results. It will also not work with a central sensor autofocus camera like the Z1p as the divide of the 2 halves is down the middle of the sensor. Hi Steveen. I have the Panosonic PVL 859 VHS-C amcorder. This one actually replaces the model i bought first as (l759 i think)as it was going to be to long to fix the problem i had with it(some pixels were burnt out leaving a white dot on the tape)I complained and they gave me the next model up as compensation. Any way i digres. It has a colour viewer which i can take or leave.Lots of effects, fadding, titles etc.Good fast zoom. You are correct that tapes are 30 min, although i beleive a 40 min tape is (was) available.I use it 99% of the time to tape rounds of jumping or dressage tests and i keep it at SLP which gives me 90 min. Out doors the quality is good.Indoor i take advantage of a very good back light feature Panasonic has.Its a 3 step system.I like it a lot.Beats the heck out of the one step systems by far. The view screen is big,4 and colour.Very handy when playing back a tape for a rider out doors. They can actually see it:) It also has a digital still camera for about 10-12 pictures around 740 x 980 or some thing like that.Dont use it very much. Re: OT: Camcorders
Steve, I had a JVC for many years. Certainly on the plus side is the ability to play it back easily. Minuses are that tape cost per minute is higher than 8mm, image quality is worse and sound quality is worse. This is a dead end field where all advancements are being put into DV type cameras. I eventually switched to a Hi8 camcorder and the sound quality improved dramatically. At this stage I finally moved on to DV. Looking back, I don't think I would choose VHS-C again. Sound and image quality are more important to me than playback convenience. Just my opinion. Re: Rubber pentax eyepieces
Boris, there is no discernable mark on the eyecup. I purchased it from EBay, and just looked through my EBay mail folder and was unable to find the seller's name. I _seem_ to recall that the seller was a photo dealer, not an individual. The eyecup is round and came with a built-in rectangular clear bit of plastic that protects (?) the viewfinder. Sorry I can't tell you more. -Lon Boris Liberman wrote: Lon, Could you please indeed look up the name and the price of this item. Re: OT: Camcorders
I agree. We own a Sharp Hi8. But aside from the fact that she wanbts here own camera, she's just intimidated by having to connect the camera to the VCR using the RCA plugs. It has been an intersting insight into the problems of consumer electronics. I suddenly have more sympathy for the Digtial behind the counter thread. Nice to hear that both a JVC and a Panasonic owner has a reasoanble experience, however. I eventually switched to a Hi8 camcorder and the sound quality improved dramatically. At this stage I finally moved on to DV. Looking back, I don't think I would choose VHS-C again. Sound and image quality are more important to me than playback convenience. Lon, There are two centerposts for the x55 series; the standard and a shorter one. The latter has saved me of half a hand, at least! RE: Sent the MX back (sigh) and Happy Holidays all...
I can only guess that there is no way to check all features of all cameras. Only once did I get a camera from them that was faulty. They took it back and gave me the option of getting it back once it was repaired, exchange for some other item (they had no more of that model), or return of my money. They do provide a warranty for the items they sell other than as is. They are reputable, but human. Please take my advice
This may not prove much. One print compared, paper not optimal, etc, etc, etc. But I would have thought, based on what I've read, that the 6-color HP would trounce the 3-color Lexmark on any turf, any shot, any paper. Lon, Two thoughts: Papers make a huge difference. You probably optimize your files for the printer you've been using. Oh, and a third thought: sometimes the printer-computer interface is pure necromancy. Little spirits flit from one to the other invisibly, untraceably. I once brought home an Epson C80 which I couldn't get a halfway decent print out of no matter what I tried or what I did. I mean nothing close to acceptable, not just slightly worse. I was comparing it to an ultra-cheapie Lexmark Z22 I got as a freebie when I bought my computer. Who knows why? I never figured it out. My Canon S800 works just fine. Easily surpasses the old Lexmark. So if the HP doesn't work for you, don't bang your head against the wall too long. Just take it back, and put a tickmark in the win column for the gremlins. --Mike

I should point out I'm not at all unhappy with KEH. This camera appeared to be well within the range of what they describe as bargain condition; its defects required shooting a couple rolls to discover. Their return policy is, in any case, completely no-fault, so I don't anticipate any problems. I've bought plenty of bargain equipment at KEH in the past and will again in the future.

Re: Question about manual Petaxes.
There are 2 issues here - viewfinder brightness screen brightness. The MX screen is good in its own era, and still bright if you use fast primes (like I do). However, f4 or slower lenses will start to make manual focus difficult without split image. On the other hand, the viewfinder magnification of ME Super and MX are the highest. If you want the brightest and easiest manual focus viewfinder, install the F?-6? screens which were released along with LX2000, in MX and you have the highest magnification and brightest viewfinder of any Pentax 135 cameras. However, be prepared a CLA for any used MX you newly purchased. regards, Alan Chan I am contemplating (considering?!) buying a used manual focus manual everything Pentax body.
