The Tamron 17-50 isn't available in K mount.

Henry's Downtown should have the Limiteds, apart from the 31. If not,
Downtown Camera or Aden should have them. Stock is a little low after
the boxing week sales though, but I know Downtown at least is ordering
as much Pentax kit as they can get their mitts on, Stan's big beef
with Pentax is he can't get enough bodies to sell.

The organisation does seem to be doing very well. I went to the local outlet
of a national chain yesterday and, apart from there being _no_ film on sale at
all, the other notable thing was the empty spaces on shelves with Pentax
(whatever) on the label underneath.

As far as I can gather, Samuel D Heron was an engineer who worked at the Royal

here is the aftermath (~145kb).

I like your choice of shooting angle. I have a shot of this lighthouse
(Pigeon Point), but taken from a less dramatic angle.
The lighting and obvious effects of wind were well caught.

That was the heaviest wind storm I've ever experienced in my many
winters. We were without power for 36 hours and there are still some
who won't have their power back on for another day or so. The cold and
inconvenience were awful, but fortunately, the temperatures were in the
low 50's during the day and we had a BBQ (with a burner) that didn't
run out of propane 'til a couple hours prior to the power being
restored.

Re: Question for automobile enthusiasts on the list

2008-01-07 Thread pnstenquist
He might very well have ended up in Detroit. I'll ask around.

Chevrolet produced an engine of this design as well. It was first used in
passenger cars in 1958, but may have been used in trucks prior to that. The
chamber in block design seems to yield excellent low end and midrange torque,
so it's well suited to heavy cars and trucks. However, the high speed
operation is not very good, and emissions are extremely high due to cooling of
the charge.

Dave,
So you've got to tell us. Did the K10D take a licking and keep on ticking?
The voightlander shot looks pretty good. I like the footprints in the
foreground.
I need to calibrate the monitor (can I do that on a laptop?) for the
sunset shot.
The coral(?) is a big dark blob with only a hint of arms beneath.
Keep on sending those warm weather photos up to us. ;-)

Based on my Coca Cola inflation index, from ~1950-1964 a 12 oz serving
of Coke cost 10¢. Today it's about $1.00. So by extension we're still
in the age of 30¢ a gallon gasoline. It's just that the decimal point
got moved one place to the left.

All the mechanicals were the same as the other Ford cars.

I think the bodywork (except for trim) was the same as other Ford

other innovative features, such as the pushbutton gearchange.

Unless that guy is working for UPI or National Geographic he's taking

Strange *ist-D flash behavior. A quick question for those still using old equipment.

2008-01-07 Thread P. J. Alling
Quick question for those still using old equipment. I had to shoot an
event a week ago and my *ist-D started acting strangely. When I mounted
a AF280 flash the camera worked perfectly for the first few shots then
seemed to be trying to PTTL with that flash, which of course the flash
is not capable of doing. I then swapped the flash to the *ist-Ds where
it worked as advertised. I was carrying a light kit so my backup flash
was an AF200. Out of necessity I decided to try that on the *ist-D and
it worked perfectly. Later on I swapped them and the *ist-D once again
misbehaved. Has anyone seen this? If so did the fix involve something
other than sending the camera out for repair? I'm currently planning to
keep the *ist-D as a backup when I get the K10D, (or K20D depending on
which makes the most sense in the next couple of months, funny talking
about a camera that hasn't been officially announced yet). The *ist-D
is getting a bit long in the tooth, but I expect that I'll get more for
the Ds on the used market, and repair of the D might not even be
economically feasible, (once the K20d is announced).

Re: PESO (x4): How much faith....

2008-01-07 Thread Bruce Dayton
Well I have faith in the weather sealing. The issue to me is that
this guy is not dealing with weather, he is just walking out in salt
water. Weather sealing is something like rain or wind blowing dust
and such. I won't be surprised if he is in the market for a new
camera.

Just the other day we went to shoot Elephant Seals right after the
huge storm in California. We got down to the beach walking with the
docent amidst a heavy downpour of rain that eventually turned in to
hail. I pulled my K10D and DA* 50-135 out from under the pancho many
times to take shots. It definitely got wet, but held up well. I
didn't keep it out in the rain the whole time, just during shooting
itself, then back under the pancho.

I like the footsteps, it just suffers from a very bland sky.

The setting sun shot suffers from the same thing. There are days when
the weather just doesn't quite give us what we are hoping.

is not capable of doing.

OT: Saturn (was Re: Question for automobile enthusiasts on the list)

2008-01-07 Thread ntax
The Saturn division originally built very good little cars, a great
first cut on subcompacts. GM simply starved them of money until they
could be made over in the image of the parent company. Now Saturns are
just plastic clad GM extrusions. They build keepers but the fish keeps
 rotting from the head...

My dad got one of the very first Saturn coupes in California, and for the rest
of the '90s my little brothers and I were big Saturn fans (we were young and
impressionable, what can I say).

Every year we went to the San Francisco International Auto Show, and I saw the
evolution of the Saturn brand from the beginning. When GM started drawing them
in closer, they just went downhill. Quality, looks, everything.

The only interesting unique thing Saturn has put out this decade was the 2001
special edition yellow coupe, which I thought was just beautiful, especially
with the black yellow leather interior. My mom got one, but with plain black
cloth interior (boring). The other product of theirs that I like is the
Sky roadster, but it's just another GM clone, like the rest of Saturn's cars
now.

I was very sad when my dad sold his little red Saturn, but it was getting old
and he needed something he could haul gardening supplies with. Now he's
driving a Honda CR-V, and I suspect future car purchases that my parents make
will be Japanese as well. My parents just don't trust the American car
companies anymore.

Me, I'd give anything for a new Dodge Challenger.

John Celio

The Saturn Score:
Dad: original '91 SC-1 Coupe, now drives a Honda CR-V
Mom: 2001 yellow special edition SC-2
Bro 1: 2000 (?) SL-2
Bro 2: 2004/5 Ion
Me: yet to own a Saturn, much less drive one. My family's cars are all manual
transmission, which I don't drive well enough to risk ruining a clutch or two.
Plus, I'm not a GM fan, and currently loathe my little Chevy.

it was around for quite a few years until they adapted the corporate

GM had abandoned it. It was only a three-speed, but it was bullet proof

Paul: Thanks. Bungalows go for about $299,000 - 500,000 now! My Dad bought
his for $19,000 back-in-the-day, as they say. And to think all these
beautiful bungalows were built for the middle-class, so the middle-class
could become homeowners. Tough to do now.

A nice glimpse of residential Chicago. I enjoyed these, particularly
the Chicago bungalow. Our first house was a Chicago bungalow in
Beverly. Photographically, I think door with window is the best shot.
 Nice composition. All well rendered.

2008-01-07 Thread graywolf
Well, this is definitely unseasonable weather, everyone is
talking about it.

Just playing around with the blog, it is harder for me to
figure out how they implemented stuff than it would be to
write the code from scratch. I am back to the standard
interface as it takes larger photos without distorting or
hiding them than the others I have tried so far.

That is just a subdivision street, the only difference is
that up here the scenery is a bit prettier.

The road to town is a nightmare, two narrow lanes, no
shoulders, a bank on one side, and a drop on the other, not
to mention the 1/4 mile 200 foot climb from the apartment
and the dumb helmet law in town. If you do not time it right
you get bumper to bumper traffic too, all of them mad
because there is no way to pass the bicycle.

Thanks for you comments, Ken.

Thibouille,

Do you see this as a bad thing? It smells like money to me!

Suppose you were SONY going to introduce a new computer or INTEL a new
chip in early 2008.
Suppose you sold out of the old computer or chip at the end of the Holidays.
Wow, no old inventory to get rid of at discount pricing...smells like
money to me!

Furthermore, the note mentioned Ritz Camera as a big retailer taking
bodies out of the market.
Ritz/Wolf Camera stores are a terrible big chain. I would guess they
are 1,000-2,000 stores in the USA.
They are terrible because they killed/acquired every local camera
store in every town in the USA.
And they replaced them with a print machine and uninformed clerks.
One Ma Pa camera store survives in my area and HELIX, a 15 store
regional chain catering to pros.

So what happens if the buyer for 1,000 Ritz/Wolf stores says Hey
those Pentax cameras are good and cheap. We need to put at least 1 in
every store in the chain for Christmas. You want to turn that order
away?

This is not far from the truth. I never go to this chain but was in 3
of the stores over the Holidays. In my area, HELIX stopped carrying
Pentax SLR's and digital SLR's shortly after the *ist D. Ritz/Wolf
Camera didn't stock them either. But now each of the 3 stores had
Pentax right up there on the shelf with Nikon and Canon!

This is a good thing. Let us stop whining about it!

Regards, Bob S.

Re: OT: Saturn (was Re: Question for automobile enthusiasts on the list)

2008-01-07 Thread Adam Maas
Opel has been a GM mark since 1931, apart from brief government
control during the Nazi era. GM initially invested in Opel in 1929,
buying 80%, and bought the rest in 1931. Several Opel designs have
made it over here under different names, starting with the Cadillac
Catera/Saturn L100.

The Sky Red Line is identical to the Opel GT(Argh, forgot the
Speedster's the earlier model, with the mid engine not the current
model) . The only differences are the badges, Opel doesn't sell the
base model. Daewoo also sells this car as the G2X. The Solstice is
based on the same platform (the Kappa) but with completely different
sheetmetal and different suspension and options (The Solstice is
actually the faster vehicle due to better suspension tuning).

Yeah, mine needed exercise too. That was the first time I used it in
a while as well. It was set to 68mm something and I shot 6 vertical
frames but all in all after cropping the panorama was about a little
over 5 frames. I was panning rather briskly because I knew the clouds
were moving quite fast. I took 3 sets, this one works the best.

Thanks...

Re: OT: Saturn (was Re: Question for automobile enthusiasts on the list)

2008-01-07 Thread Adam Maas
Also, Saturn seems to be essentially the US branding for Opel as of
this year, much as Vauxhall is in the UK and some low-end Holdens are
in Australia. All of the current Saturn line are similar or identical
to Opels but manufacture is shared. THe Astra and Sky/GT are
identical, while the Aura and Vue are similar to their Opel brethren
(Vectra and Antara). The Outlook is the sole exception, but it's a
product that wouldn't sell in Europe anyways.

it worked as advertised. I was carrying a light kit so my backup flash
was an AF200. Out of necessity I decided to try that on the *ist-D and
it worked perfectly. Later on I swapped them and the *ist-D once again

I've never seen behavior like that using my AF-280T on my *ist D. I'm
guessing you've already tried cleaning the contacts on both the flash
and the camera's hot shoe? Have you tried using it with the off camera

More Bulgaria Travel

2008-01-07 Thread Doug Franklin
Hi guys,

Just a note to say thanks again for your earlier responses on traveling
in Bulgaria ... and ask another question. :-)

I'm a little less confident in my navigational skills in a place where
they don't use the same alphabet I'm used to. So I'm planning to use a
hand-held GPS system to have breadcrumbs to find my way back to the
hotel or train station, or to find inaccessible places I've found on
Google Maps and places like that. So should I go ahead and get one here
in the US or should I get one over there? Any particular ones to look
for or avoid?

Oh, and are ushankas common in that area? I love them, but mine is old
and a bit too small and I'd like to replace it with a good one made with
real leather and fur. And, no, not the sable ones like in the book and
movie Gorky Park. :-)

Oh, one more ... what are good local color things to bring back as
gifts? You know, like if you go to Scotland you bring back wool and
Scotch and if you go to Belgium it's lace and chocolate. That sort of
thing.

PESO - Afternoon Thunderheads

2008-01-07 Thread Bruce Dayton
A little older shot from the film days. This was shot at Lake Powell
in southern Utah. During the summer, it is very common for afternoon
thundershowers to roll through and then clear back up. This was taken
in late afternoon as you can see from the shadows.

I can see you do not have a Harvard MBA. They teach them
that products should fall apart after the warranty runs out
so you can sell them another.

This would be why I have bought exactly one American badged vehicle (which
was so bad that it fell apart under warranty and was essentiallly
unrepairable), and now, no matter where they are assembled, will probably
never buy anything but Nissan.
I've noticed in the news that the big 3 are all on the ropes these days,
perhaps those Harvard MBA's aren't overly smart.

Now, if GM's Engineers could come up with a decent non clunking tranny
for their extebded cabs, my life would be a heck of a lot better.:-)

You figure after building cars for what, 90-100 years,, some one would
 come up with a keeper.

The 5 speed automatic in my Titan is very smooth.
The engine mated to it has more torque than the Dodge 5.7 Girly-Hemi.
The only other truck that attracts me is the F-350 Crew Cab Super Duty.
