I'm one of the people who worries about the Internet more or less
full-time for a living. It's impossible to overstate how many bad
guys are out there or how hard they're trying. We're actually holding
our own against them, mostly, but they do win some. So anyone who
cares about their online presence should be asking themselves some
questions time to time. What if the server my presence is on were,
suddenly:

(a) under the control of malicious people,
(b) no longer there; the provider simply absent, no phones being answered, etc
(c) still there but providing completely unsatisfactory service and
non-responsive management.

The question you should be asking: Is there a Plan B? Is there a way
to rebuild my online presence? Am I 100% sure that I have control
over an accurate copy of 100% of my data?

Sorry to be a downer. -T

Re: Pentax macro lens with new approach

2009-12-17 Thread eckinator
Makes sense even though it is not obvious.
Focusing distance is measured sensor plane to subject, working
distance front element to subject. I have a Canon FD 4/200 Macro
spec'd at 58 cm focusing distance but the lens extends so much when in
macro that working distance is a mere 19 cm. Still way better than my
DFA 50/2.8 in close combat =)

I don't know what the exact numbers are, but the K7 isn't a lot lighter than
the K20. Somewhat smaller, but it's packed and well built, so it's rather
hefty. I prefer a heavier camera. It makes for a steadier grip and balances
substantial lenses better. The DA* 60-250 and the K7 with battery pack are a
perfect match.

I don't blame you for leaving and not confronting the Mall Cop. The
downside of being arrested (even if no charges are laid) kind of
sucks. And, as we've heard earlier in this thread (and in other
stories), even if the "real" police realize that taking pix of kiddies
is quite legal, if you argue with them, some police are quick to lay
the ubiquitous "obstruct justice", "assault officer" or "resist
arrest" charges.

Those are an officers best friend.

Still, taking photos of children is quite legal, even if those
children aren't yours.

Sorry about that.
I never understood AOL's business model.
When they cut back on hosting web pages,
I cut back from $29/month to $10/month.
I can go to $0 when you leave.
I find the interface is getting more cumbersome,
and the time it takes to link to their web pages is often long.
This wasn't noticeable on a dial-up service, but is on a high speed line.
I just leave the AOL site when a page takes more than 5-10 seconds to
load.

I'm looking to deprive them of eyeballs and ad revenue.
Regards, Bob S.

I think it's mostly people who don't know anything about computers but
want email. A lot of people who don't want to know anything else about
computers. My mom uses AOL for email.

Just one step up from Web-TV.

At the risk of putting myself out there for flames and insults I'm gonna
respond. I've given this company five and a half years of my
professional life. That's a record for me. I'd love to give them five
more to be a part of where the company might be going. I think our new
CEO has a vision but I'm worried about his execution. Moving operations
offshore is going to destroy this place. We know first hand that the
people in Bangalore are not going to be up to the task to take over
every aspect of operations in the short period of time they have.

The whole "internet on training wheels" insult is old and tired. AOL
has changed s much since it was "your mom's ISP." We are NOT an
ISP. We are more like yahoo and MSN. The term "portal" does not do us
justice. We are so much more than that. We have dozens of sites that
millions of people go to every day without realizing they are "using"
AOL. That's what the future of AOL is supposed to be about. Content.

Sure we have people still paying for dial-up but we are shedding those
(on purpose) by the millions every year. We also have people too stupid
to use anything but the crappy, bloated, slow, AOL client software. My
life in the email ops department would be a billion time easier if we
scrapped the client because of all the legacy interfaces we have to keep
around while we modernize the rest of the infrastructure.

Last week we separated completely from Time Warner (a marriage doomed
from the start) and started trading as "AOL" on the NYSE. Yes, our
valuation is crap. Yes, the stock is gonna be pretty bad. But there is
a ton of potential too. Time Warner dragged us down. A string of bad
CEOs and CTOs cost the company dearly. Now that we are independent,
maybe we can make gains in the marketplace.

Then again, I might get laid off in the next month. In which case I
could give a shit what happens

camera-store-try on the K7, it felt good to hold and had a nice feel. I do
understand the point about weight/steadier grip/with longer lenses--and
agree, but lately the kit feels so heavy--course so does by body. Maybe I'm
just so out of shape, and I'm probably not shooting enough--actually, I
just checked Lightroom; I shot 5887 frames so far for 2009. I suppose by
PDML standards that's pretty wimpy, but certainly not out of character for

I don't know what the exact numbers are, but the K7 isn't a lot lighter
than the K20. Somewhat smaller, but it's packed and well built, so it's
rather hefty. I prefer a heavier camera. It makes for a steadier grip and
balances substantial lenses better. The DA* 60-250 and the K7 with battery
pack are a perfect match.

I my case, the K200D does pretty much everything I want, so I probably
wont upgrade until a camera comes along with similar features but with a
better high ISO performance and a sensor with a few more MP of
resolution. (Oh, wait. Isn't that the K-x?)

G'day all

We have a serious bushfire burning a few km to the east of us. It's
downwind of us so that's good - but not good for those in that

As I write another Erikson Air Crane has just flown over the house - we
have a small lake a couple of hundred metres away and the choppers have
been using it to fill their water tanks for most of the day.

Of course I took a few photos.

My daughter has developed an interest in competitive ballroom dancing.
This is interesting: my complete klutziness is clearly a recessive trait.

The studio she and her dance partner have been using put on a show Sunday.
Shooting dancing is hard! The light isn't too good, motion is fast and
all over the place, and if one's timing is off one can make the most
graceful people look like clods.

Fortunately Ellen and her partner performed about three-quarters of the
way through the afternoon, so I had some time to practice and sort out
technique. They performed a very intricate waltz, which her partner had
choreographed.

Why did the police show up?

What was being done wrong?

It's not against the law to take photos in a mall.

If the owners (through their agents, the mall cops) don't want you to
take photos, they have the right to ask you to leave. If you don't
leave, you can be charged with trespass.

But you can't be charged with taking photographs. As far as I know,

The mall cop said because other children were on the Carousel it was
illegal. I didn't believe him, but didn't wanna take a chance either.

The mall cop is, as my grandmother was wont to say, "full of sawdust and
slough water." I won't say what I think he's full of.

It's another of those power trips. "You can't do that because I said so."

Little, by little our freedoms are eroded. First they take away our
right to photograph our own families in a public space ... then what?

Is there a local chapter of the ACLU? I'd suggest contacting them and
asking if they'd be willing to write a letter of complaint to the mall's
management.

Might not hurt to contact whatever local TV/Radio yellow journalists you
can find in your area, and see if they'd be interested in asking the
mall management "Why are your security guards threatening to arrest a
mother for photographing her own child on the mall carousel?" I'm sure
there's some station that has a "troubleshooter".

Good theater if they can set up an ON AIR interview in front of the
carousel. Better theater if they interview YOU in front of the carousel
and then ask the mall management to explain just what kind of idiots
they are.

I realize this is making a mountain out of a molehill, and you'd
probably rather just get on with your life, but you keep piling one
molehills on top of one another and eventually you do have a mountain.

RE: K-7, A 50/1.2, Katz Eye, front focus

2009-12-17 Thread John Sessoms
You eliminated what I hoped might be an easy answer, so I think your
next step is to determine whether it affects all of your lenses or just
the one.

I think you next should determine if the FA50/1.4 has the same front
focus problem. Also whether it's a problem in auto focus as well as
manual focus.

Possible outcomes:
1. It's only the A50/1.2.
2. It's the A50/1.2 & FA50/1.4, but only in manual focus.
3. It's both lenses in all modes.

I don't know which you'll get, but it seems to me they would point to
three different problems:

1. the lens
2. the screen
3. something else (I don't see how the screen would affect auto focus).

Of course, I was wrong before.

From: Boris Liberman

Hi!

I think I'd start a new thread.

First of, I've re-checked and re-adjusted my camera diopter, though it
was probably spot on from the beginning. I used whatever is written
below the picture in the viewfinder.

Though this is not a scientific test, meaning, e.g., that no tripod was
used, but I've observed the following (using Yvon's chart, suggested by
Derby).

1. The closer the object - the more precise is the focus.
2. The worst situation is closer than infinity, but only just. This is
when just rotating the lens all the way to infinity will result is out
of focus picture. I suppose it is because of the distance and relative
smallness of what I have to decide the focus upon.
3. Close to minimal focus distance I get approximately (very roughly)
8-10 mm of front focus.

I do have a vague recollection of my dialog at Pentax Israel when they
said that I might have focusing precision problems with the screen
simply because *usually*, they said, this is what happens.

Suddenly I am feeling like drowning into major time spendage of testing
K10D with A 50/1.2, testing both cameras with AF lenses (which I have a
few, notably FA 50/1.4 and FA 43/1.9), and so on.

*Sigh*

Any suggestions as to how to proceed and how avoid major time spendage
will be appreciated.

Boris

P.S. My eyes ache a little after this exercise...
P.P.S. Meanwhile I learned by experience that when my K-7 shows one mark
less than full battery I still have probably 50 or may be even 75 shots
to go including reasonable amount of chimping.

PESO - Snow Patterns #1

2009-12-17 Thread Eactivist
About two weeks ago, we had a heavy snow fall. (Sorry, been busy, missed
some PESOs in those weeks, as my mailbox got full.)

This is like a one-in-fifty-year event for this area (Northern California,
San Francisco Bay Area -- no, don't know if they had any in SF, doubt it,
I am inland, inland from Oakland and Berkeley, California).

Yes, sometimes we get snow, but very rarely. It usually is a light dusting
that melts within about 1/2 hour after the sun hit it.

This was much heavier and lasted much longer; the snow on my back lawn
remained there for three days.

So, this California gal, without going anywhere, just staying at home,
minding her own business, gets to inundate you all with snow pictures!

Heh. Never in a million years would I have guessed this would happen.

Second day, late day, as the snow melts, still some big patches around.

Re: K-7, A 50/1.2, Katz Eye, front focus

2009-12-17 Thread Boris Liberman

John,

I went in the direction similar to what you suggest. So far my findings are:

1. FA 50/1.4 is spot on AF with central sensor. Same front focus issue
in MF mode.

2. FA 77/1.8 is spot on w.r.t. AF and similar front focus issue in MF.
3. On K10D I cannot determine if I have any MF issues. K10D also has
Katz Eye screen.

I've contacted Rachael Katz and she suggested that modern AF Pentax
cameras have wider tolerances w.r.t. manual focusing assembly precision.
I intend to contact Pentax Israel and ask if they would be willing to
try to calibrate the screen (using special shims). As far as I
understand all that has to be done is slight change of the screen
position inside the camera. Depending of what Pentax Israel response
would be, I should decide my next step.

In principle I could try to focus a bit beyond the point of focus as
present position of the focusing screen indicates. The problem of course
is that it is somewhat hit and miss game and that it changes from lens
to lens. I've been spoiled with relatively precise MF of my K10D using
similar Katz Eye screen so that I am a bit frustrated, but at least I
seem to have a plan.

Last but not least, the responsiveness and willingness to help of Rachel
Katz is to be commended by highest praise. Truly amazing service.

Thanks!

Boris

RE: A Small GESO - Firefighting Helicopters

2009-12-17 Thread John Sessoms

From: "Brian Walters"

G'day all

We have a serious bushfire burning a few km to the east of us. It's
downwind of us so that's good - but not good for those in that
direction.

As I write another Erikson Air Crane has just flown over the house - we
have a small lake a couple of hundred metres away and the choppers have
been using it to fill their water tanks for most of the day.

Of course I took a few photos.

 :-) >

A minor nit ... rotor-craft & prop driven aircraft need a slower shutter
speed so you don't completely stop the motion of the rotor/propeller.
Gives a more pleasing rendition. Most of them need just slightly more
blur to the rotors, especially the third one.

Learned that the hard way (and hopefully will remember in the heat of
the moment the next time I need it).

That said, it's a good set. I love the old CH-54. It's good to see
they're still of use to someone.

It was very unlikely that the car would come over the wall? Watch it again.

Maybe not the whole car, but the rear wheel is up on top of the wall at one
point. That makes it quite possible that something could snag and wrench
the wheel off. Even just a wheel, at a mere 50mph, can ruin your whole day.

I like it. My only nit is that it's a bit too dead-centre for my
liking. I think it might be a much more dynamic photo of maybe a bit
were lopped off the right. That way there'd be a nice "flow" from the
bike up to the shuttered window on the upper left.

Other than that, I like it a lot. Colours are amazing - the bike and
the wall work well together. I really like the choice of focal
length.

Well, the focal length was pre-chosen before we left the house. Most
often I mount one prime lens on my camera and go on shooting.

I recall that I was rather limited by my choices due to the objects on
the background that I excluded from the frame - notably the dust bins...
But you have a point and I hear you.

Well, I must admit here, Jack, that it is simply what my K-7 metered me

fails sometimes but the conditions must be significantly more difficult
that on this shot. Though in principle one may see that some of the

But then, what would you expect for a website that gives third prize

Boris,
I agree about the eye color. I've never photographed someone with
such blue eyes. She's a darling little girl who was wishing me Happy
Hanukah as we decorated the cookies. I talked to her mom yesterday
and the cookies she took home were eaten in a day or two. She must
have had 6 as we decorated them and ate lunch too!
We were invited to her pre-school Christmas presentation and party
yesterday. It was fun to see the 3 & 4 year old kids singing. And
bringing a 'healthy snack' to share hasn't changed much either...
cookies are still 'healthy'. :-)

Marnie, I'd say that the first shot was somewhat more successful, if
rather different than the second one. However I am at least half mathist
by education which is probably evident by this comment...

Wow, first one, she's beautiful. Literally. Lovely shot (her eating a
cookie), just lovely.

Re: PESO x4: reworked cycling photos

2009-12-17 Thread Boris Liberman
Dave, to me the b/w version looks much stronger and in fact is a
terrific shot. I can easily imagine this being on top of the newspaper
article or magazine article about that cycling competition that you had
photographed.

Hi all,

Here's a followup from last week's cycling photos. I've grabbed a
couple that I'd left out of the galleries and converted them to B&W.

Each of these pics is around 200kb in size... I should have resized
them a bit smaller as a couple are a little too big vertically for my
laptop screen.

I showed the original version of this last week:

You'll see that I've cropped the B&W version slightly.

Brian, you evoked some rather grim associations also related to the
WWII. So one may say, you've hit the bull's eye with this viewer...

G'day all

Another one from my trip to Western Australia.

At Geraldton there is a memorial to the sailors who were lost off the WA
coast when the HMAS Sydney II was sunk in WW2. It's a particularly
beautiful memorial and it's focal pint is a silver dome with 645 silver
seagulls - one for each sailor lost.

The memorial is even more significant now than in the past - the wreck
of the Sydney (and the Kormoran, the German raider that sank her) was
located in 2008, about 100 km off the coast at a depth of 2,468 metres.

This is from the last day of photography before heading back across
