We had a fund-raising dinner and auction this evening; the occasion was
our church's return visit to Costa Rica in late May - early June. A high
proportion of youth on the trip, so additional fundraising needed to help
cover all of the costs ( not because they are more expensive, but because
they are not gainfully employed, just in case anyone was wondering.) Sixty
or so people in attendance.

I had printed, matted, and framed four of my shots, they were in the
silent auction portion. Several bidders on each, the final average price
was way too low but still higher than my direct expenses of
printing-matting-framing. And then I sold a second copy of two of the
shots to people frustrated by having missed out in the first round. So, I
helped in the fundraising, got lots of good strokes on the prints, but am
not ready to give up my day job. We also donated a week at a time-share
resort (exchangeable at many resorts around the world) and a
dinner-for-six at our home, and those both went for big bucks. A good
evening all in all.

RE: Sick of cheap scans

2010-03-23 Thread John Coyle
I'm even later on this one, but I have a ScanWit 2700 which I use with
VueScan, and the combination produces very good results. As the name
implies, the files it produces are at 2700dpi, and the software generally
copes well with exposure variations: although some 40 year old Kodachromes I
scanned recently are showing a magenta cast, which is proving very hard to
eliminate.
I also acquired today a very small unit, branded Otek, which scans at
3600dpi, and does the scan in 0.5 seconds - not a typo! For a quick and
dirty scan for the web, that's very useful. At larger magnifications, the
image shows some faint banding, but that disappears at web resolution. It
takes an SD/MMC card for storage, and has a 32MB internal memory which can
be used if there is no card. Feed and operation are manual, and the slide
carrier only holds three slides, so it is not suitable for very large scan
jobs. The negative carrier will hold a strip of six, however, so that might
be more usable.

Recommended as backup for your main scanner, certainly.

It may be a bit late but I'll add my 2c worth in. Having owned and
used way too many scanners all I can say re the quality of the scan
that you linked to is that it's complete crap. You should be able to
obtain far better results from a dedicated film scanner that's well
over 10 years old.

Film scanning is tedious at best but it's not too difficult to get a
film image into the digital domain with good results. Like others have
suggested I would use the premium dedicated film scan service
suggested or simply save your pennies and look for a good value used
Nikon or Minolta film scanner. Spending money to get the results you
got is a waste of money.

Bill Cunningham

2010-03-23 Thread Derby Chang

I think I've mentioned my fondness for Bill Cunningham before. He gives
the impression of just casually being out there and shooting what he
sees - Bill's catchphrase just having fun. But the stuff he does must
take a lot of discipline and a sharp eye. And NY women are beautiful (as
Garry Winogrand would say).

Nice little writeup on the DB

My take was a bit different. Many decades ago when I was in college I earned
my meals by working at a sorority house populated exclusively by princesses
from NYC. I was constantly dealing with requests from the young ladies: my
steak is too well done, bring me one that is slightly more pink; my lobster
is too cold, bring me another one; you didn't put out ketchup for the
steak, go get it for me; etc. It was tolerable because the housemother had
one inviolate rule: don't annoy or complain about the cook or the
kitchen/waiter staff; it would be hell to find another good crew. So I would
politely tell the young ladies that I would try and do better the next
meal, but what they had was what they were going to get. And if they wanted
to desecrate their fine steak, they could go and find the ketchup in the
pantry on their own. When I read your Craig's List piece, I felt a bit of
sympathy for someone who needed to ask for help, a bit of admiration at the
chutzpah  of the lady for the picky details, and a bit of deja vu as I
thought about those young princesses from long ago.

There is a difference.

Sunny side up eggs are fried on one side only, and never turned.
The yolk is still fully visible and orange-yellow. With over easy
eggs, they are flipped over, but just briefly, so the egg is white on
both sides. In both cases, the yolk is warm but still very liquid.
Quite unlike English or Irish fried eggs, which would bounce if
dropped on the floor. G

Our state health department tried to ban runny eggs in diners and
restaurants, but the loud public outcry made them back down.
Democracy in action.

I think you're mistaken on this, John. The drives themselves are SATA.
If you install them inside the computer case, they connect using the
SATA interface. If you put a SATA drive in an external case, the
external case can supply an eSATA connection back to the computer.

Right. I understand that NOW. Trouble from reading email BEFORE I make

I misunderstood it to not support a newer style of SATA drive, rather

I agree. But a steak can be cooked close to well done without turning
it to shoe leather if it's butterflied or cut very thin initially.
Until I managed to educate my wife's palate I had to butterfly filets
for her. Cuts from the tenderloin are particularly bad well done,
because they are quite lean. But an inch-thick filet, butterflied and
opened so it's half an inch thick, can be grilled to where the pink is
pretty much eliminated in four or five minutes.

Semi-OT: Photoshop Issues

2010-03-23 Thread John Sessoms

Semi-OT, since I use Photoshop for the photos I take with my Pentax cameras.

I posted earlier that I had upgraded the memory in my laptop to the
maximum 4GB, although 32 bit Vista only sees something like 2.5GB for
some reason. I knew it wouldn't be able to see the whole 4GB, but I
thought it should be able to see 3GB.

I've noticed that since the memory increase Photoshop CS3 seems to be
performing more poorly. It takes longer to load, and gives more of those
blank screen not responding episodes. I've even had a couple of
crashes where it just stopped working altogether and had to be closed
using task manager.

Any thoughts?

My plan is still to eventually do a clean install of 64 bit Windows 7 so
it can see the whole 4GB RAM, but I'm waiting both for the early bugs to
be found corrected and for a little extra money to come my way so I
can install it on a larger hard drive.

Re: PESO: The Scream

2010-03-23 Thread John Sessoms

From: Daniel J. Matyola

I took the image because something about the sculpture grabbed my
attention and held it. I tried to capture the feeling that it aroused
in me when I faced it. I tried to make it look more like a statue --
or even a head -- than just a mask. I tried to bring out the slight
discolorations and the textures to make it more three dimensional. In
the end, however, it is merely a reasonably decent copy of the
original, as you point out.

So what?

A reasonably decent copy of the original might make a good
illustration in an otherwise boring text book; a worthy use for a
photograph in my opinion. And it has an added dimension for you because
of the memory attached.

We don't have the memory, but the photo at least takes us inside the
museum as well as any museum catalog does.

Even if it ain't great art, it's a good photo.

Re: Semi-OT: Photoshop Issues

Did you also adjust the size of your swap file when you increased the

Semi-OT, since I use Photoshop for the photos I take with my Pentax cameras.

I posted earlier that I had upgraded the memory in my laptop to the maximum
4GB, although 32 bit Vista only sees something like 2.5GB for some reason.
I knew it wouldn't be able to see the whole 4GB, but I thought it should
 be able to see 3GB.

I've noticed that since the memory increase Photoshop CS3 seems to be
performing more poorly. It takes longer to load, and gives more of those
blank screen not responding episodes. I've even had a couple of crashes
where it just stopped working altogether and had to be closed using task
 manager.

 Any thoughts?

My plan is still to eventually do a clean install of 64 bit Windows 7 so it
can see the whole 4GB RAM, but I'm waiting both for the early bugs to be
found corrected and for a little extra money to come my way so I can
install it on a larger hard drive.

the Web when the design and images of it were released back in January. But
there's only my review on the black one and (oddly and separately) one
person's review on the white one at amazon.com ...

Wow, I wanted to love this camera ... the aesthetics/design got me as
soon as I saw the first images released back in January. I have enough old
Pentaxes (including an Auto 110 Super) to really appreciate the retro look,
styling and old-style logo. The form factor was actually quite nice, with a
good balance, small but really nice right-hand grip, and a pleasant grippy
texture. It was a bit light (plasticky) for its size.

But the picture-taking experience -- slow, slow, slow, at least by 2010
standards. I think the 2004 PowerShot I have is faster. Flash photos were
terribly slow because of the preflash, which seemed to add an extra second
and a half to the process. And images were soft overall, but softer as you
zoom anywhere near the telephoto end. Noise and speckling was apparent at
nearly all ISO speeds. As far as positives about image quality, in bright
daylight, at 80 ISO (the sensor's base speed), images weren't bad and the
lens did show good flare resistance.

Videos were technically HD, but at quality poor enough that it didn't
seem to be worth the higher spec. Zoom in video mode is only available as
digital zoom, which degrades image quality immediately.
Sliding battery cover was very fragile and seemed prone to become
misaligned and I was very, very careful with it; I would always worry about
 its durability.

I didn't get to check out any of the really fancy features like pet face
recognition. Human face recognition seemed to work reasonably well, though
the photos weren't necessarily better exposed because of it. In fact, basic
flash photos/snapshots seemed washed out, with very muted colors.

All in all, a very big disappointment. I knew it had fairly average
camera specs (fairly run-of-the mill point-and-shoot specs for a 2010 ps)
with a cool design, but the photo quality was such a step backward from
anything else I'm using today that I had to return it.

Re: Interesting device for those looking into external HD, storage

From: Ken Waller

Questioning the need for this at all ?

Do you have internal HDs laying around that you're using as external HDs?

Seems better to outright buy an external HD from the start - no need for
this device.

What am I missing?

Seems to be for hot swapping multiple hard drives.

I just ran into a use for them yesterday. Went back to my old school to
apply for readmission; planning to reenter for summer semester.

School now has a requirement that every student have a 100GB or larger
hard-drive. Must be formatted FAT so it will work on both PC and Mac.

All the workstations have these docks. You keep your work on the drive
until you upload it to the instructor.

Finishing and correction is heavily digital workflow.

Other interesting changes -

When I started in 2005 every student was required to have a medium
format camera. With this academic year, every student has to have a
DSLR, and the students are assigned a medium format camera from the
school's inventory.

I just got a Motorola Droid yesterday. I would have an iPhone but

After having the Droid for a little over a day I can say that it has
most any app I would want (there's just a ton of stupid iPhone apps).
It seems a little faster than the iTouch, especially when downloading
apps, and it has been for the most part a very intuitive process and
I've only needed to look at the online .pdf guide twice. I make far
fewer mistakes on the touchscreen keyboard than I do with the iTouch,
probably 90% fewer miskeys.

The google integration is nice.

_needs_ diet Pepsi.

I'm guessing Mom and Dad plaid for her graduate school OR she has a student
loan , is living in a dorm and doesn't get her next loan check until
April 1st.

She has a computer, too. It isn't that she is asking for a meal, or
offering barter
of say books or wardrobe in exchange for groceries. And doesn't she
have any friends??
She wants specific stuff from Trader Joes -- where, in fact, she can get
her moning coffee free
and a small sample for breakfast. She can get crackers and jam at the
farmers market for free.
she could offer to do some chores for someone in exchange for a meal --

I actually saw the public reply to her before I read her post... it made
me curious.

the WANTED section of craigs list is not _social_ networking. Used
mostly for people who
want to know where to find/buy something, want to purchase specific
items, and lately too much
either phony needy people / orgs or salvage companies.

But I've responded to people who have asked for specific things for
free or cheap including
school teachers needing books for their kids, etc... but I've seen a
lot of ads from kids who have
come to NY, gotten themselves a $1500 a month apartment and then are
asking for people to
give them stuff to fill it up - on line_ when one simply has to walk
around the city to find discarded
items of all sorts , or stuff put out for recylcing...

I also saw the offspring of friends living on student loans but still
needing a $100 Gucci bag
and/or going out to bars almost every night with friends where even a
beer costs $3 or $4...

And this chick is in graduate school??? she isnt really poor -- she
just doesn't want to
fess up to parents and/or friends that she spent too much money in
March, I'm guessing.

I didn't see her offering in anyway to work for food. Rob's not
wishing her ill, John...
just sort of tsktsking at the folly of youth... at least, so it seems to
me.

If she had posted without the elaborate list of specific items , gosh,
I might have said
come over for dinner and I'll feed you in exchange for you doing the

My S.O. had a Droid phone and it's pretty impressive.

My wife got one the day they came out. I liked it enough that I had
my work phone changed to a Droid (from an old Treo - the Windows one).

One thing I really like is the display - higher resolution than the

I'm not impressed with the default one that comes with the phone.

That's one of the nice things about smartphones - all the noises are

you don't have to fork out 99c every time you change your ringtone).

My wife has made her Droid even more Cylon-like; the ringtone is a

I really wanted to like this camera, but what a disappointment ... this
is the review I put up on amazon.com. I'm surprised there's nothing else out
there yet on this camera at all, considering the interest it sparked around
the Web when the design and images of it were released back in January. But
there's only my review on the black one and (oddly and separately) one
person's review on the white one at amazon.com ...

Joe

It seems a little faster than the iTouch, especially when downloading

That's the general Notification noise - it will do that if there
is something like a new text message, voice mail, etc.

And you can change the noise to something less obtrusive if you like.

Re: Optio i-10

2010-03-23 Thread Tom C
I agree with the reality of commodity objects being nothing special,
but I disagree in part, because users, especially first-time users,
will form a perception of the brand nevertheless.

If I were the first time user of a particular brand and had a poor
experience, I'd shy away from that brand next time.

Three cases in point.

Sony high-end ear buds ($80)... after several months crackling noises
while listening to music.
Sony high-end noise-cancelling headphones ($200)... same issue.

I don't think my next pair will be Sony and if it is, I'll mail the
warranty registration card immediately.

Blackberry Storm.

Just abysmal performance and a torturous user experience (IMO).

I didn't go looking for Blackberries when upgrading my phone.

I'd be the same way with a camera. Well I was

I purchased a Pentax Optio 750Z. Poor performance and lens elements
appear to be separating.

I won't be purchasing another Pentax PS.

Any product a company sells can have either a positive or negative
impact on whether the customer will purchase that brand again.

A company should not sacrifice their reputation and possible brand
loyalty for short term profits on low-end products. It's
counter-productive.

Wow, I wanted to love this camera ... the aesthetics/design got me as
soon as I saw the first images released back in January. I have enough
 old
Pentaxes (including an Auto 110 Super) to really appreciate the retro
 look,
styling and old-style logo. The form factor was actually quite nice,
 with a
good balance, small but really nice right-hand grip, and a pleasant
 grippy
texture. It was a bit light (plasticky) for its size.

But the picture-taking experience -- slow, slow, slow, at least by 2010
standards. I think the 2004 PowerShot I have is faster. Flash photos
 were
terribly slow because of the preflash, which seemed to add an extra
 second
and a half to the process. And images were soft overall, but softer as
 you
zoom anywhere near the telephoto end. Noise and speckling was apparent
 at
nearly all ISO speeds. As far as positives about image quality, in
 bright
daylight, at 80 ISO (the sensor's base speed), images weren't bad and
 the
lens did show good flare resistance.

Videos were technically HD, but at quality poor enough that it didn't
seem to be worth the higher spec. Zoom in video mode is only available
 as
digital zoom, which degrades image quality immediately.
Sliding battery cover was very fragile and seemed prone to become
misaligned and I was very, very careful with it; I would always worry
 about
 its durability.

I didn't get to check out any of the really fancy features like pet
 face
recognition. Human face recognition seemed to work reasonably well,
 though
the photos weren't necessarily better exposed because of it. In fact,
 basic
flash photos/snapshots seemed washed out, with very muted colors.

All in all, a very big disappointment. I knew it had fairly average
camera specs (fairly run-of-the mill point-and-shoot specs for a 2010
 ps)
with a cool design, but the photo quality was such a step backward from
anything else I'm using today that I had to return it.

They are in order: Brown grass, Green grass, Crop, BW.

I used the color replacement tool to brown the grass and make it look
more natural, but am not quite easy with the ethics of that.

The grass in the lion enclosure at the NC Zoo is BRIGHT green, doesn't
really evoke the natural habitat. It's really garish to my eye.

I used an 8x10 crop to get a more intimate image. This is my preferred
image.

Finally I included a BW conversion to finesse the grass color question.
Which brings up a question, why is BW conversion acceptable and
re-painting bright green grass brown is dodgy?

I invite your comments.

I've stopped ordering steak when I go to a restaurant. I'm a
philistine

who like steak well done (ie. not a pink morsel anywhere). I think
that's a task beyond the ability of most chefs.

If it doesn’t excite you,
This thing that you see,
Why in the world,
Would it excite me?

RE: question for the brits American to English translation

2010-03-23 Thread John Sessoms

From: Bob W
This thread reminded me of some advice I gave to a friend who
was going to Europe for the first time:

It is important to realize that in a foreign country, people
may not understand your meaning, even if they do speak
English. There are certain American expressions that can not
understandably be translated into any European language,
including the varieties of English spoken in the UK and
 Ireland. Some examples:

Isn't the point of going abroad to experience the differences? The English
are terrible for this, going to a foreign country and demanding that it be
exactly the same as Scunthorpe.

 Crispy bacon strips.

Pancetta. You can buy crispy bacon strips in Marks Spencer.

Eggs over easy (or sunny side up)

We can probably cook it - we just can't ever remember what it means.

Rare steak (or a rare hamburger)

These are the ways steak can be cooked in France:

Bleu - the beast's heart is still beating
Saignant - bleeding
A point - pink in the middle
Bien cuit - well done. You may be deported if you ask for this
Americain - any restaurant that's prepared to do this to a steak does not
deserve your custom

Why would I want to order steak in France? I can get steak at Golden
Corral. I mean, what's the point of going anywhere if it's going to be
just like home? If I want just like home, I might as well STAY home.

If I'm going to France, I want real FRENCH COOKING, and I don't mean
fries, freedom or otherwise.

Re: PESO: 4 in 1 Lions

2010-03-23 Thread David Parsons
I used the color replacement tool to brown the grass and make it look more
natural, but am not quite easy with the ethics of that.

If your exhibition doesn't have a prohibition on editing, I don't see
why there would be an ethical consideration.

I think Lions 1 is the best one. The 8x10 feels cramped to me, and
the black white doesn't really add anything for me.

They are in order: Brown grass, Green grass, Crop, BW.

I used the color replacement tool to brown the grass and make it look more
natural, but am not quite easy with the ethics of that.

Which brings up a question, why is BW conversion acceptable and re-painting
bright green grass brown is dodgy?

 I invite your comments.
