Something going on there in the corporate Karma department. It seems that what Apple has always demonstrated was the difference between products that were designed to please one person in particular, and products designed by a committee that were designed to offend as few people as possible. Love them, or hate them, you had strong feelings about them. I don't think that I have ever used an Apple II. When I was in high school the only computers anyone I knew had were TRS-80s and Commodore Pets. Most of my actual computer experience was on the PDP-8s at UCSC. I think that the Apple II came out when I was at college and had other things to occupy my time, such as an Engineering degree, my first sports cars (Sprites) and my first real girlfriends. When the Mac came out, at work we had a variety of computers, each with a different keyboard, with the backspace key in a different spot on every one of them. However, on every one of them, CTRL-H would work as backspace. Sometime around '84 or '85 I was throwing a party, and having heard of the wonderful things you could do with a Mac, I wanted to write up the invitation on it, using the fancy fonts and all of those good things. That evening was probably my most unpleasant computer user interface experience ever. The software was completely counter intuitive, the keyboard didn't even have a control key, and when I did print out the invitations, using the fancy font, they looked pretty crappy. It seemed to me that until about the time that OSX came out, MacOS kept just a couple years ahead of the software required to run it comfortably. When I had a laptop stolen from my home, as long as State Farm was buying a functional equivalent, I decided to have them buy me a 12G4 powerbook, rather than another super portable Linux box. There were many things that I absolutely loved, and still do, about that computer, and quite a few that drove me to distraction with frustration. The things that worked, just worked. The things that didn't work for me, never would. The gui is still bizarre in many ways, but at least you can call up a terminal and get to a bash prompt, for when you need to get real work done. And, I'll give them this, at least the gui is consistent. Once you know how to do some basic things in one program, they'll pretty much work the same anyplace else. Which is a good thing, because the macintologist party line that everything is blissfully intuitive is reflected by documentation that seems to set industry standards for uselessness. I've been using a mac for my primary photography, and then web browsing, computer for nearly four years, and have gotten to know the UI well enough to feel that the only thing worse than the UI on the Mac is the UI on everything else. It seems that every time I upgrade a linux box, they throw more bells and whistle in the gui making it flashier, prettier and harder to actually get anything done. I'm currently working on an XP box, and it's sole redeeming feature is that it's actually possible to correct many of it's faults by downloading various third party programs. I think that history will most remember Jobs for the iOS family of devices. He created new markets by making the company build toys that he wanted to play with. If you shared his aesthetic, they were technological perfection incarnate. If you just wanted shiny toys, that did cool things, they were slick, pretty, and were easy to make do cool things. He understood that giving people choices made products harder to learn, harder to support, and would cause people's brains to freeze in indecision. Apple was not the first company to rise to greatness on the vision of one, or two people. Honda, Ferrari and HP immediately come to my mind And while those companies survived the loss of the guiding vision at the top, I'm afraid that Apple will also lose a lot of what made it special. On the other hand, the sharpest of you in the PDML could apply for the recent opening on the Board of Directors at Apple. The sharpest of the PDML, are probably smart enough to avoid trying. Q at NY Fashion Week
A top fashion shooter covers New York Fashion Week with the Pentax Q, and generates a buzz. He also got good results from a wireless trigger in the Q's hotshoe along with an external Metz. The camera is quickly wowing me with it's ease of use, and for me something I didn't expect: fast focus in very low light. Only when I was in a very dark room did the focus assist beam even bother turning on. It may not be as fast as an Olympus EP-3 but it is very close, with a performance that's comparable to the Canon Rebel T3i. The focus tracking easily kept up with models walking a runway during the walk-through. Best yet, it automatically goes into focus tracking when is face detection mode following the briskly walking models with a good rate of keepers (8-9 shots out of ten in excellent focus). http://www.adorama.com/alc/blogarticle/The-Pentax-Q-Stress-Test-Day-1 -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

They represent an important evolution in the gradual appliance-ization of personal computers. Most high technology goes through stages where it's expensive and complex and only for enthusiasts at the beginning, then eventually becomes pretty-much turnkey and a no-brainer for everyone. The car for instance. The iPhone is really a tiny personal computer that just happens to also have mobile phone technology built in to it. The iPod Touch is a tiny personal computer that also makes a good music player. I read all the Steve Jobs obits and what happens to Apple now news on my iPod Touch while having breakfast this morning. I've got it around somewhere use it when necessary, but I'm just a little afraid it might fog the plastic screen over the LCD or seep around the edges and foul the electronics. And the one time I *did* try using it on the LCD screen, I ended up having to use the alcohol wipes to remove the residue of Goo-Be-Gone before I could get a new screen protector to stick properly. So these aren't ancillary stuff, they are a huge part of the future of computers. They should be your point #5. -bmw I see your point Bruce. Thanks Charles, I stand humbly corrected. I assumed all Pentax DSLRs had standardized on the metal twist lever to open the card/battery doors. Hope they reintroduce these. Re: K-5 Card slot hatch
From: P. J. Alling The funny thing is that I have gaffers tape that leaves a whole lot of residue, and electrical tape that peels off easily and leaves almost none, just the opposite of what would normally be true. In fact I sometimes use the electrical tape to take the gaffers tape residue off other objects. I remember my first experience with electrical tape. My father had this cloth based stuff that was so sticky that you almost couldn't remove from the roll, it seemed to form a permanent bond with everything. I think my mother still has electrical cords that my father repaired. The cloth stuff is friction tape. It went over top of the electrical tape to provide a durable, weather resistant outer layer to protect the taped joint against friction. It was like the old Postal Service ... neither rain, nor sleet, nor freezing cold ... When friction tape got old, the adhesive bled through to both sides. Or at least, that's what I learned in my first MOS school in the Army lo these many, many years ago. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

K-5 Card slot hatch
From: Bipin Gupta Hey Folks, Pentax DSLRs come with a positive metal flip lever to open the Card + Battery doors - the best design ever. So how do you manage to break these doors?? Of course the doors are plastic, but darn good ones. So unless you leave them open or fight with them you can't break them - and when open the card will not record, no? Please be gentle with these doors as you would with your GF. Honestly, I have experimented twisting and turning the card door on a RIP K20D with some pressure. The door fails to break. So those of you folks who are going to break their doors please let me know, so that with my Master Mechanic skills I can make you unbreakable - hopefully - metal doors. Enjoy your Pentax DSLRs in the meantime. The card door on the *ist-D didn't have the same kind of release lever that the K-10D/K-20D have. The release is built into the door itself. At that, I have NO IDEA how it broke. As I said, I was walking along through the woods with the camera on the strap around my neck when I heard a noise. I looked down at the camera and the battery door was missing. I was fortunate that I did not ignore the noise continue walking. I was able to recover the missing part by digging through the leaves around my feet at that point. The plastic had split right at the hinge, leaving the little tube the hinge pin fit through the spring still attached to the camera. By then, I'd used the camera for over a year, but I took it back to the shop where I bought it. They were still a Pentax dealer at that time. Their repair guy ordered a replacement part from Pentax it only took about a week for the part to arrive. It took him about 10 minutes to install it. In the meantime, I used acrylic packing tape to hold the broken door in place so the little pin would tell the camera the door was closed the camera would turn on so I could use it. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

The K-5 is set to full auto-focus (using all AF points), and I'm using TAv or Manual so I get to pick the aperture (f8 to get at least a little depth of field) as well as the shutter speed (to control the blurring of the wings). And, of course, you folks only see the successful shot. I've got another 30 frames from that session, of which one (or, at a stretch, two) I'd consider showing to you. From: Darren Addy Probably a bug that was introduced in a recent code change. If it is like others that have done similar tricks in the past, the temporary solution is to Disable Instant (search autocomplete): http://practicalrambler.blogspot.com/2011/09/how-to-disable-google-instant-no-google.html I hate Instant, so the solution of setting my home page to: http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0hl=en is my personal preference. First off, I was assuming you were talking about a problem with the Google search page, but now I wonder if you mean the Search box (that can be set to different search engines, in the Firefox browser). Do you have the same problem with another browser (like Opera or Chrome)? RE: Clear Packing Tape on LCD
From: Bipin Gupta Someone suggested here on PDML use of good quality clear packing tape on the LCD, like the one made by the 3M company. CAUTION / ACHTUNG ! While removing it, considerable force is required. Chances are you will pull the LCD screen out if not careful. The LCD screen is stuck with double sided tape to the camera body. That someone was me. You should be careful, but it's not inherently dangerous to your camera. No more so than applying one of the expensive LCD screen protectors you can buy from camera stores. And it lays down smoother than those commercial screen protectors. Best to leave it on until it begins to wear off by itself. The whole idea is the tape is there until it gets too scratched up to see through. The tape gets scratched up, but the LCD does not. When the protective cover is worn enough that it's time to replace it, peel it from a corner and draw the tape *across*, doubling it back on itself rather than trying to pull it straight out. At that point, very little force is required. Especially if you don't try to pull it straight up. Never try to pull it straight up. Another alternative is to clear contact acetate like we used in the Army for laminating topo maps, but the mil-spec product is very hard to find. You can use the Contact Paper brand clear acetate that is sold at Target, Walmart or Kmart ( who knows where else), but my experience is it's not quite as transparent as the tape is, and it's not as easy to smooth out any bubbles that might occur. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

It will be enough they can implement the technologies already available on tiny sensors such as the backlit CMOS one on the Pentax Q and not yet seen on larger sensors. Don't forget that new technologies show up first on smaller sensors (desperately needing them for the unfavourable noise/signal ratio) and then slowly leak toward APS sensors (one year later or so) and then (much later) reach full frame sensors, which have a slower turnover (several years). Hoya and Pentax
It's interesting to see what Hoya has done for Pentax: They've taken them from mediocre sensors (K10/K20/K7) to good ones (K-x, K-r, K-5) They finally brought out the 645D. It seems to be such a good camera that everyone who has one spends all of their time taking pictures rather than hanging out on PDML. They brought out the K-5 which is a no-apologies APS sensor DSL. I shot a car at General Motors at dawn today, with the design dome in the background. It wasn't easy. I had to go through multiple levels of GM folk to get permission, and there aren't many spots on the tech center campus where one can get a clean background that includes the dome. No scout ahead of time. Just show up and shoot. But I'm happy with the results. I'll post after the run. The pics are going to be part of a NY Times section devoted to Chevrolet's 100th anniversary. In regard to a UV filter, any piece of glass you put in front of the lens degrades the image somewhat. And if it's a cheap UV filter, it degrades it a considerable amount. RE: Clear Packing Tape on LCD
On my Wacom pen tablet, which got scratched after many years, I cut a piece off an A4 transparency sheet, and taped that down over the surface: works fine and can be easily replaced when worn. It also doesn't matter if I use a wet cleaner on it. Should work just as well on an LCD screen - I'll try it on my *ist-D. HTH John Coyle Brisbane, Australia -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of John Sessoms Sent: Friday, 7 October 2011 6:16 AM To: pdml@pdml.net Subject: RE: Clear Packing Tape on LCD From: Bipin Gupta Someone suggested here on PDML use of good quality clear packing tape on the LCD, like the one made by the 3M company. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
