I didn't need to update to LR3 at the time, but it was worth doing it for other reasons. Sitting around being angry at Adobe is just a waste of time and energy. You don't want to use their software? Go use something else. There are plenty of options. Godfrey, you are making an assumption, and a wrong one (even if you only used those words as a colloquial expression). I am not sitting around. I am busy with too many things to be just sitting or even to be bothered with upgrading 2-3-year old systems just for using LR4 while everything else I need runs just fine.[*] I choose to be running LR3. By making their business decisions, Adobe created a few inconveniences for me, but those are small enough to avoid rushing with upgrades or changing the workflow (in any way). The costs of upgrades are not negligibly low, and the alternative costs (my time) are prohibitively high at the moment. (See a brief sketch of those below, in my response to Zos.) Obviously, I will upgrade my systems, but when I decide, not Adobe. - [*] Moreover, there is a danger that some older software that I still need might not run or even install on the new system. - But Adobe inconvenienced me enough that I am happy to yell at them publically, even though in this case it won't lead to any tangible result. But, maybe it would cause a bit of a resonance somewhere, and next time, they would think for a bit longer before making their decisions. Besides, I despise when people (like Mr. Kelby) are using fallacies to defend their decisions and are very arrogant about that. Overall, I have a very diverse opinion about Adobe. On one hand, there are several good software solutions created (or acquired) by Adobe, including LR. On another hand, every so often, I encounter something that the company does in an awkward way that creates some inconvenience for me as a customer. That doesn't preclude me from using their software, but often, I find my ways around their idiosyncrasies. Enough is said on the topic, and I don't want to waist more time arguing about things we can not change. Tue Jan 29 20:11:12 EST 2013 Zos Xavius wrote: Lr4 is a huge improvement over 3. Sir, you didn't read what I suggested to read, and you didn't bother to check your facts. So, you fall into the trap of committing the same fallacy as Mr. Kelby. MS is still oficially providing extended support for WinXP (SP3) until April 8, 2014. That is more than 1 year away from now (and more than 2 years from when Adobe abandoned WinXP). Seriously do yourself a favor and upgrade. A cheap 300 pc is likely better than anything that had xp installed on it originally. I appreciate your concern and your desire to help, but... You make conclusions based on wrong assumptions. You can choose to buy cheap PCs every 2 years (and complain about your problems), or you can buy well-balanced system with carefully picked _reliable_ components and have it running for much longer. There are at least two issues/differences here: 1. reliability of a cheap PC (Will it still work in 4-5 years? Are you willing to deal with premature hardware problems?) and 2. ability to run and (more importantly, -) install certain software on a newer OS. If you are only playing games and running software that you upgrade every year anyway, the first scenario might be fine. If you need continuity and need certain software of particular versions (and on the same computer), then the second scenario is the way to go. Some software may not run on Win 7, or its installation may not be available anymore (if it installs itself over the net, from the manufacturer's server). And I have those. And this is just one reason. Also, I don't have time to reinstall every 2 years all the software I need on the desktop. Needless to say, a $300 PC is unlikely to support two monitors at a reasonable rate. As far as your wifes laptop not running windows 7...if you put at least a gig or two of ram in the machine (rather cheap upgrade I might add) Zos, if you read my message more carefully, you would have realized that I was talking about a _netbook_. Netbooks (at least before 2011, those that came with WinXP) typically came with 1GB or 2GB of RAM, and the limit was either 1 or 2 GB. In my case, I have 2GB, and that's all what is supported. So, your comment about the memory is irrelevant. But

Re: Anyone owns Metz 52 AF-1 flash unit?
Yuh my 54 is blown. I saw them going for 200 on flea bay. Though that might have been a bit presumptious. They are rather desirable due to their system independence. Either way the cheapest option for me is to have mine fixed, so that is what I will do. I've long considered switching to a flash that does p-ttl as a remote slave, but quite honestly I would prefer to use flash manually off camera and I use m primes a lot when shooting portraits, so p-ttl is out of the question anyways. The autothyristor on the metz is very, very good and the diffuser takes it out to 20mm. Its not enough for a room sized group, but I'm more than happy with it for most of my needs. The small reflector flash is useful too. I must admit it is a large and heavy flash. I have considered making a hammerhead style bracket for it before. Re: SD Card Survey
I've have Patriot and Kingston 16gb plus some Patriot LX 32gb cards, speed class 10 if possible. I buy cheap stuff, less than $1 per gb, sometimes $.50 per gb at Frys. The cards hold a lot of pictures (300+ each), and are tiny. I get nervous having so many per card. Take a laptop and download to it. If you shoot like Larry, you'll have lots of pictures. I don't really see any difference in performance between the Sandisk and PNY cards of the same class, except that when newly formatted, the K20D reports that the PNY cards can record one more image than the Sandisk cards of the same size. You might want to look into 16 Gig sized cards, to have a reasonable amount of storage per card, based on the difference in file size between the K-5 and K20D. I find that I can store about 330 K20D images on an 8 gig card. Welcome, Aahz! Galia (my daughter) is using 16GB SanDisk card. I think it is SD Extreme or whatever. I am using Patriot LX 64GB SDXC card (which is total accident, really, as it was bought for a very different purpose). In order to use it reliably, I had to upgrade firmware of both our K-5 to version 1.13 (I think it is the very latest one). Otherwise, every now and then the resulting image would come out unreadable by the camera itself and garbled in my LightRoom. Re: SD Card Survey
It's terrible that Larry has forced you into this. We'll try to be merciful (maybe!). In my K-5 I usually use SanDisk Extreme 8GB cards. They hold about 300 DNG files (a lot more than the camera says it will hold when you first turn it on). I don't like putting too many eggs in one basket, and since I'm not doing high-volume shoots (such as a big wedding) I rarely have to change cards. Recently I bought an Extreme Pro 90MB/s card, and compared write and read speeds with a 45MB/s card in the K-5. There was no difference, except that the faster card cost twice as much. RE: Travel
From: Bob W 1. The most wonderful thing I discovered in all of my travels is the joy of coming home to a bathroom that has the right kind of toilet paper. Luxury to have TP at all in some places. In the Ras Hotel in Addis Ababa when I was there you had to ask the toilet paper lady, sitting outside, to let you have some before you went in. You get 3 sheets, and have to spend a lot of time persuading her that this is not going to be adequate. Especially after some types of Ethiopian food. There are young lads in the streets who sell the stuff, one sheet at a time. When I used to travel to those kinds of places, I always carried my own personal supply in my ruck-sack. Come to think of it, I still carry an emergency supply in my automobile, and it's easy enough to look see if the amenities are adequate to my needs before committing myself. For those who are unfamiliar with driving in the U.S., we drive on the right side of the road, so traffic circles naturally flow to the right (counter-clockwise). Welcome aboard Aahz By now you've gotten the combined wisdom of the list on SD cards, I can only add that I only use San Disk Extreme cards but I mainly shoot 2.0 GB size - that way if I lose a card I won't be loosing hundreds of images a 2.0 GB card is nicely filled during a day of shooting for me. BTW last August I took a 9 day 'cruise' on the Inside Passage on a 62 passenger, 150' 'Expedition Boat' definitely not your typical cruise ship. I carried 3 lenses - a 300, 70-210 28-80 and a 1.4 teleconvertor -had no need for any other lenses. We went late August and had phenomenal weather - mostly sunny with temps in the low 50's to high 60's during the day. I've been using 4GB cards with the K-10D and 8GB cards with the K-20D. I'd probably go with at least 16GB cards for a K-5. Tiger Direct has a retail store here, and I get almost all of my memory cards from them. Prices on 16GB Class10 SDHC cards today are about what I paid for 4GB 8GB Class 4 cards ($12.99), and 32GB Class10 SDHC cards were $22.99. I tend to fill the cards up swap them out for the one in the battery grip before downloading them to my computer. Because of that, I prefer to have more small capacity cards on hand rather than fewer large capacity cards. That way, I will lose fewer images that way if I do manage to screw up a card. OTOH, I found an SD card in the dryer a while back that I had apparently put into my shirt pocket after downloading and it was still readable after having gone through a wash dry cycle (no bleach). Re: SD Card Survey
Back when I was shooting with Pentax *ist DS and K10D, I had standardized on 2G Sandisk Extreme cards. Then, 2008ish onwards, I standardized on 8G Sandisk Extremes with Panasonic L1 and G1 bodies. Last year, I upgraded to 16 and 32 G Sandisk Extreme and HP Class 10s, shooting with Ricoh GXR-M and Leica M9. With a 32G card in the Leica M9, I can make about 1500 JPEG + raw, 18Mpixel exposures per card. This means I need to carry about three-four cards to cover the entirety of a three week photo trip to the UK, with double redundancy (I normally find myself shooting about 1500-2000 exposures on these trips). The funny part of this, to me anyway, is that the other cameras I carry much of the time these days take 12 exposures on a roll of 120 film. ;-) -- Godfrey godfreydigiorgi.posterous.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Tiger Direct has a retail store here, and I get almost all of my memory cards from them. K-01 Has Arrived!
Yippie! The box from BH was on my porch when I got home today - Inside was a Panda-Bear white K-01, DA-XS 40mm f 2.8, extra battery and SD card. I think this camera will be excellent for snow crsytal shots - I just put in my snow crystal setup and did some test shows. It is sleeting now and too warm for snow, but as I hoped the focus peaking made it very easy to focus despite the extreme macro and shallow DOF. As with the Q I could not get the flash to stay in manual mode. Fortunately in the last few days I cobbled together a PC cord setup that by passes the TTL functions altogether, so I can use the flash in manual no problem. Pentax has done a good job of sticking to a standard control layout, and even though the K-01 is a little different with only one control wheel, everything falls into to place very intuitively. I did have to look up how to activate focus peaking. I think that the focus peaking and ability to zoom into the frame for focusing - far more than the Pentax Q - will make this a great tool for snow crystals and other extreme macro photography. The 40mm lens is small. Haven't tested it out yet. I did put in my Mz-S and shot out a short roll of Tri-X - the vignetting looked fabulous through the finder. Discovered that the built in flash on my Mz-S is dead. Crap - these film cameras keep fading away For my specific intended purpose I thing that the K-01 will be great. It was 60F when I left for work this morning, 35F when I drove home, and high tomorrow is predicted to be 18F. (That would be 15, 2, and -8 C) Lots of snow coming so I hope to give this setup a good workout. As far as general purpose shooting goes... I have to say I look at the K-01 and think WTF? I was skeptical about the Q but the moment I picked it up it up I thought Wow! The K-01... I started out using Patriot SD cards, which were very cheap at Fry's. They pretty much all worked fine electrically, even after they started falling apart physically. I rarely fill up even a 2G card in a single shoot. (I tend to shoot with digital much the way I shoot with medium format film ...) Re: GESO - Venice
Thanks Bruce, The Q is definately a nice little camera. Its dynamic range falls a little short of the 645D, but hey. :-) Someone said here a while ago that the raw files are comparable with those of K20-D. I think it's almost but not quite; still close enough to demand respect. But next time I go to a city like Venice to photograph, I think I'll rather bring a K-mount outfit. The 645D and Q combination surely gives you the best of image quality and portability in separate packages, but it's inconvenient to trade one off against the other. A K-mount outfit is simply a better over-all compromise.
