It seems like the *istD was *made* for the Pentax H. Perfect match in its finish, handles great, and the smaller sensor uses the sweet spot of the fine one element plastic optic :-) I'll post some pics taken with it and the *istD (I'm going to get carpal tunnel syndrome just from typing that name) as soon as I can. The 16-45 seems like a nice lens, but it's bulky and the istD feels so much better with a small prime. The FA35 will be the main lens attached to this body. The zoom will be around I guess, but I might ebay it if I don't use it much. I'm really happy with the istD, I don't think it couldn't be closer to an MX in terms of feel, given the market constraints nowadays. It's very very nice. > Pittsburgh is only about 30 minutes east of Ohio - stop on by if you can I might! Wow, this is amazing. I haven't read the pdml for a while, even though I still keep my subscription, and have procmail set to put the messages in a folder. This morning there was a short glitch and two or three messages we not filtered, going to my main inbox. Shel's message below was one of them! I wonder if you guys mention me that often? :-) Hi everybody. I'm still very much shooting, although mostly with the Leica. I was in Paris last September taking a workshop with Peter Turnley, and some of my pictures from then are now hanging in Caffe La Piazza in North Beach in San Francisco. *ist D viewfinder
Hi PDMLers, Yet another thread on this... So, I returned to the group after some months not reading it, and found out about the new *ist D. If the price is below/around $2000, I am going to seriously consider getting one to use with my K and M lenses. As much as I love Tri-X, I'm ready to kiss film goodbye if I get a camera as usable as my MX and Leica M6. Question: Anyone know whether the viewfinder on the *ist D is "full frame" (ie, covers what the whole field of view of the lens) or is it blacked out to the smaller field covered by the sensor? Question2: How do you pronounce *ist? Is it "the camera fomerly known as the replacement for the MZ-D"? Cheers, j -- ---------- Juan J. Running with bulls (semi-OT, but with pictures)
I posted another gallery to my site. This time they are color pictures, taken with a couple of disposable cameras just before and just after I run with the bulls in Pamplona this year. No pictures of the running itself because, well, I was running. I had a couple of Pentax cameras in the car while this was happenning, so that makes it kind of in topic for about four blocks or so. Again, I tried to edit things coherently so they work as a group, and ended up with 20 frames out of 65 or so. I have very mixed feelings about these images, but still wanted to go through the excercise of editing them. Like the previous petanca gallery, it is subject to very probable changes. http://www.jbuhler.com/html/encierro.html Comments welcome, j -- -- Juan J. Re: Who are you?
OK, so I'll jump into this thread in order to ease my way back to the list. I work as a computer animator in Palo Alto, California. I was born and raised in Argentina, and moved to the US about seven years ago. I'm 33. I was married until early this year, now I'm separated and starting to enjoy this new part of my life. Photography is my way of doing something creative where I have all the control (at work, I'm always constrained by someone else's vision). I do, or try to do, street photography, my pictures are visible through the link in my signature, below. I travel quite a bit, and somehow managed to go to Europe or to Argentina about twice a year for the last four or so. Just came back from three weeks in Spain, where I drove around quite a bit, run with bulls in Pamplona, and took some passable pictures which I'm still editing. Oh, I shot with a battered black MX, and several lenses, usually on Tri-X or Fuji Neopan SS. I have a special talent to find bargain SMC glass, like a $50 K24/3.5, a $180 K85/1.8, and a $99 K30/2.8, among others. I also use a Leica M6 with a 50mm Summicron, and have periods where I favor one system or the other. That's about it... j -- ---------- Juan J. PDMLers in Spain?
Hello people, It looks like I'll be in Madrid for a few days at the very beginning of July, then go to Galicia for the week of the 8-12, and then back to Madrid for a couple of days before coming back to the US. Any Madrileños/as who want to get together? Any recommendations about good bars where to watch Argentina in the World Cup final? :-) I'been to Madrid a few times already, so I won't be doing the tourist thing, I'll probably spend most of the time shooting in the street with my MX (ob Pentax content). Re: Film scanner question
Yes, film scanner have been falling in price quite a bit. I have a Polaroid SS4000, and except for Polaroid going out of business, I recommend it. It can be had for about $500, I think, and it comes with Silverfast. Now, since you have a 67, you might want to look into a scanner that can do both. At least check the prices, to make sure you don't regret not getting one of those. j On Wed, 20 Feb 2002, J. C. Hi, Some of you asked me to report on how this went, so here you go: I had my gallery opening tonight, and it was awesome. I was amazed at the number of people that showed up--about 40 or so (our own Shel among them, sporting an LX with FA 43mm--thanks Shel for coming!). And, to add to my amazement, I actually _sold_ eight pictures! What are these people thinking, I don't know, but hey, I could use a 35mm Summicron right now :-) We actually had to ask people to leave at the end, when the gallery people were trying to close. This is not false modesty, but really, while putting the shots together I kept getting the feeling that they are all over the place, without a consistent style. As it is, I think I ended up with roughly two sets of pictures within the ones I selected. The good thing is that in doing the editing, I discovered a few pictures that didn't match the style of the rest, but that gave me ideas on some series and projects I'd like to pursue. > Good luck - hope you sell a bunch. Piezo over silver - I have never been a very good darkroom guy--I have less than two years of experience there, and currently don't have a darkroom available. That might change now that I'm moving into a house, but we'll see. With Piezo I get great prints, with great tonality and no dust problems... As much as it is said about it (namely, that maybe it's not really archival), it is very white and I get the deepest blacks with it. I like the Somerset papers a lot (use Somerset Velvet quite a bit and been playing lately with Somerset Enhanced) but the blacks on them are not too deep. The lack of deep blacks is the main problem of Piezo, but I think it makes up greatly for that with its extraordinary tonality. Re: Is it Film or is it Digital
Without picking at them in Photoshop: The image with the ropes is the digital one, since the Leica picture was taken for a commercial job, and they would have removed the ropes and taken care of the ugly reflection on the table for something like that. If the guy wants people to tell from the picture quality itself, he should provide full-res images. Scale the Leica neg scan so it is the same size as the digital picture, crop to a size that is manageable via the web, and we'll see. Or send 11x14s in the mail. :-) On Thu, 24 Jan 2002, Shel Belinkoff wrote: > I don't know which was taken with the Leica, nor do I know what scanner > was used - yet. The print will have a color cast anyway, so you might as well be in control of it. To make a duotone, in Photoshop select Image->Mode->Duotone (iirc, that's where the option is) Short of a quadtone system, a duotone gives you the most control. j -- ----------- Juan J. As a courtesy to the seller, you might want to ask him what he prefers. Right now the banking situation in Argentina is in big turmoil, and for example banks won't let people withdraw more than something like $250 per week. This is your own money you cannot withdraw if you have it in a bank in my country. Really sad. Of course, it is said there that big bank customers, the ones with the really big accounts were told about this beforehand. As usual, it is the small guy who suffers. So, there's a big chance that if you sent a money order or something that requires being cashed in a bank, your seller won't be able to see the money for quite a few months. Never underestimate the power of a FedEx envelope with a few dollars inside... (not that I would recommend doing this, it is against FedEx regulations) Also, depending on where you are and where the seller is, my mother in law is visiting from Buenos Aires right now, staying for a few weeks. I think Hyper Manual might also need A lenses. As for the MX not being good for street shooting, it's interesting you say that. I sold my PZ-1 last year, after about a year of not using it. I had been (and continue) using an MX. The finder if brighter, focusing is faster (because you don't have to care about where an AF sensor falls, and can focus anywhere in the frame) and exposure is OK, if you meter the pavement it each time you turn a corner or the light changes a lot. The camera is also small an unobtrusive. (Although this is more of a psicological factor than anything else.) j -- ----------- Juan J. Ann, As others have said already, respooling 120 in 620 spools is your best bet. I don't think a 120 spool will fit in the Argus (I have one). You should look for old film, sometimes you can buy it on ebay (I have a couple of rolls of Verichrome Pan 620 dated 1963, which I got cheap on ebay so I could use the spools) I'd offer to send you a couple of spools but I'm short on them myself. Once you load the camera, don't forget to cover the little red window in the back with a piece of black tape. You'll need to uncover it every time you advance the film, do so in the shadows. Speaking of using old cameras, I have a nice Kodak Tourinst folder, that takes 620 film. The coolest thing I've done with it is run a roll of 35mm slide film, using a 620 spool as take-up, guessing the amount to wind after each frame, and unloading it in a dark room. I got some nice slides, with the whole width of the roll exposed. Each frame is 90x35mm, with two sets of perforations on the sides. Who needs an X-PAN... :-) j = -- Juan J. Re: More on cleaning slides/negatives
> How the #$!%&*(^*%$ do you get all the dust off your slides or negatives > before you scan them? Two words: Clone Tool The scan doesn't have to be perfect dust-wise. I use a can of air to get big particles out, and try to do as good as possible with that. Then I use Photoshop's clone tool to digitally remove any specs of dust. Set the view to 1:1 and scroll around the whole image. A Wacom tablet or similar makes the process very easy. I'm using a small Wacom Graphire that costs $90 or so and comes with Photoshop LE. It is a bit of work, but you have to do it only once per negative, as opposed to a real darkroom, where you have to deal with dust once per print (I had a bad experience with a particularly dusty darkroom setup, I realize dust is something that can be controlled without much hassle, but I'm still frustrated about it) Hth, j = -- Juan J. Even with a strong work light, it was amazing how the place became darker and darker as I painted. I mean, I was expecting it to become darker of course, but the change introduced by the lack of light bouncing off the walls was amazing. I agree with Shel, it can be really hard to see, and you might end up needing more than one safelight. Stuck Program Plus
Hi everybody, and happy holidays. My $65 ebay special Program Plus arrived today, with its A50/1.4 (the reason I got the thing) and a detached rewing lever, besides a cheapo Vivitar 2600D flash. Reattaching the rewind lever was easy, I just pulled the pin up a bit and carefully screwed it back on. I rewound the roll that came with the camera (I'll contact the seller in case they want it back) and tried to fire it. Now, the shutter is not cocked, and the wind lever is stuck. Any ideas on how to unstuck it? Does the Program Plus need batteries to fire in bulb or at the flash sync speed? As soon as I get home I'll open the baseplate, and see if I can trigger the fire mechanism from there. Besides that, any ideas are welcome. BTW, the body is in Ex+ condition. Only a couple of faint marks on top of the prism, from someone who tried to mount a flash and missed. It still has the plastic on the baseplate and bottom of the mirror box. The A50/1.4 looks equally new, except for some fingerprints in the front element which should clean away easily. Help in unstucking the Program Plus welcome. I might end up keeping it after all, it seems like a nice little camera, very similar to the ME Super. Thanks, j -- ------- Juan J. RE: Screen cleaning
Thanks Alan, Tom and Kent. I just saw your messages now, but surprisingly, those are the things I tried, pretty much. First I used compressed air to blow off any dust. Gentle brushing wouldn't do anything to the marks the screen had, so the next step was microfiber cloth with lens cleaning solution. Nothing. So I went to running warm water and mild soap, with some luck but not too much. Then I tried Windex (with ammonia), and the gunk (I think it was foam) went away. I rinsed it in water because for some reason the Windex would keep leaving little droplet marks, and then I dried it with compressed air. There are two scratches, that were there before, but I cannot really see any new ones. The screen is a lot more usable now than it was yesterday. I'll shoot a roll with this camera over the weekend, but will still change the screen (and add new foam and try to find a motor drive cover). Thanks guys for the suggestions. j -- ------- Juan J. There's a photo swap meet near here the first weekend of January, I'll look for an LX screen there. In the meantime, I'll try some things on this one... Thanks again, j -- ------- Juan J. Re: MZ-S and a confession
I shoot pretty much in the same way with the MX than I used to do with the PZ-1, and the ZX-5n. With the PZ-1, I used Hyper Program most of the time, but took readings, usually off a sidewalk or similarly mid-greay area, and used the ML button. When you shoot that way, a manual camera and an automatic one feel pretty similar. That's the main reason I haven't picked up a cheap MV or MG: the lack of an exposure lock button. Of course, my exposures are all over the place, but that's because I suck, not because my technique is bad :-) j On Mon, 10 Dec 2001, Paul Stenquist wrote: > I almost always shoot with the LX in aperture priority mode, but I use the > exposure compensation dial to adjust for the scene. Re: Tempted by the dark side--help!
Thanks William and Chris. Now I can safely stay with my Pentaxes. I'll still try an FG, if say, I find one with 50mm lens for $50 or so, which is not unlikely given the few bargains I've been finding lately. But you're right Chris, the Nikon FG-20 seems like a Program Plus more or less, and if the quality is as bad as Bill says, then I'm not surprised I've seen so few of them for sale. j = -- Juan J. Tempted by the dark side--help!
This afternoon, of all places, I went to the San Jose flea market, a nice place to shoot people in my area. Some people were selling cameras. I saw two dusty ME and ME-Super, a $50 nicely brassed black Spotmatic, and a Nikon FG-20. I picked up the Nikon, and kind of liked the compact size and the big viewfinder. The big rewind lever is also very nice. Now I'm tempted to pick a Nikon FG or FG-20 with a 50mm lens to see how it feels. Please, someone say something bad about these cameras so I can keep spending my money on Pentaxes! j = -- Juan J. Re: Portfolios...
Hi Bob, > The lamp post/river bank series of photos are interesting. Have you tried > any with the lamp post out of focus and the people in focus...just for > variety. Actually, that's the way I initially took the first picture, back in '98 (the one with the painter) After taking one shot, I decided that focusing on the lam would show just enough of the guy to see what he's doing (roughly), while creating a kind of unconfortable balance (the focus on an uninteresting object). In later visits to Paris I kept taking those kinds of pictures, to make it a series. I'm not totally crazy about it though, it's probably not going to make it to the show. I think the series itself is kind of uneven. > All in all, I'd say you have some difficult choices to make to bring this > into a single, coherent portfolio. I think several themed 'chapters' might > be easier than one single, larger 'book'. Well, the idea so far is that the two first groups are what I'm going to show, and I'll separate them as such. I also have to work on the order of pictures within each group (esp. the first one) to improve the flow from pic to pic. Thanks for your comments, and for looking. This is really helping me get through with this first portfolio... j -- ----------- Juan J. I went to the nearest public library (I was in another town) and looked it up in the PDML archives. Found a few references to that lens and to the K30/2.8 I had just also seen for $99. It's an Australian company, but the servers are in the US. They are cheap (first *year* is free), fast enough (check for yourself, link to my site down with my .sig) and have answered questions and requests rather quickly. I get statistics and can receive email at jbuhler.com, which I read with a POP client. You also get to choose Linux or Windows for your platform (guess which one I chose.) j -- ------- Juan J. When Doug sent that message a while back, saying that we were being kicked off of pentax.com, I first thought the list was going to move to topica.com or Yahoo groups. I'm in a couple of lists hosted by topica, and they work seamlessly (like pdml.net does) but thay also provide a web interface if you want it. Actually, for one of the lists I'm on I get email, the other I read on the web. Doug, if keeping the list going takes a lot of resources I'd suggest you move it to Topica. You can still manage it, but it should be free, and the archive takes care of itself. Just my $.02, j -- ----------- Juan J. I don't think I want to compare them to wet prints, since I think they have their own strenghts. Tonality is one. Their alleged archival qualities is another, combined with the ease of production is another. Not to speak about the possibility of using a lot of different surfaces. BTW, I have a show coming early next year in San Francisco, and plan to show piezo prints only, mostly 11x14, mostly Tri-X scanned with a Polaroid SS4000 at 4000 dpi. M50/2 with fungus
I got my ebay BIN $49 K1000 today. The camera is in great condition, it had a leaky battery inside, but the meter came to life when I cleaned the compartment and put a new battery in. It has the Asahi logo on the prism, so I guess it is one of the older ones. The M50/2 that came with it has a nice growth inside, first time I see real fungus in a Pentax lens. I don't complain though, $49 for a K1000 is not bad and I have a few 50mm lenses already. So, I'm thinking about using this one as a practice lens. I'll open it up, try to clean the fungus, put it back together. I'd like to eventually clean some dust off my M50/1.4 and K55/1.8. My question is: Will opening the 50/2 help me with the other lenses later on? Any differences I should keep in mind? Ane general advice? Or, anyone has a better idea on what to do with a fungusy 50/2? j -- ------- Juan J. The first one is my favorite. About the page itself, I think simple is good. I could live without the inscriptions around each image, and maybe replace the double frame with a single one, black or dark grey. Nice clean and commented HTML, BTW. Next time you get a chance with Photoshop, try -L to bring up the levels adjustment window. You'll see the histogram, so you'll be able to optimize the use of the dynamic range without blowing up highlights or shadows. All you have to do is move the ends in the "input" part so they encompass the part of the histogram that has data. If you need even finer control, -M will bring up the curves window. Here you can draw a transfer curve to transform the greys in your image. For example, you could increase the contrast of the highlights while keeping the shadows about the same, or any combination of things. Those two are the controls you'll be using 98% of the time when working in Photoshop in B&W. Also, if your scanner program lets you save a 16 bit image, you'll always have the original scanned data, maybe you want to save that way and do all the tweaking at home. In any case, it looks like your use of brighness/contrast did anything bad to your image, but it's always good to know for sure. j PS: I also like the uncropped version better. However, it looks like she's looking at you but hasn't yet reacted at you pointing a camera at her. Did you take another picture, say, one second or two later? -- ------- Juan J. I'm still extremely shy, although I have days in which I just shoot away without problems. I never ask for permission, just because you get mostly posed shots when you do so. Sometimes you make eye contact with the subject after shooting, in those cases smiling is all you need. Rarely, people will ask you why you are taking pictures, in that case is good to have a card with the url of your web site if you have one, offer a print of them if the pictures are good, etc. This page pretty much sums my experience doing street photography: http://www.jbuhler.com/streetphoto.html j -- ------- Juan J.
