Anyone in Europe still selling the FA 31mm Limited?
Hi, (Long time no post from me) I've decided to bite the bullet and get the 31 Limited. By selling some unused gear, I've scraped together enough to get it, or a K10D, but my feeling was that the K10D will be getting more plentiful as time goes on, and this lens less so. I'd like to get it from within the EU if possible, to avoid being stung with another €80 in import duties and collection fees, but I can't find anyone with a stock. Ebay has no EU sellers, and the only other reliable source I know that has one (Tekade.de) are saying eight weeks, and I'd like to get it before summer is gone as the good weather spends little enough time on these shores! Re: Beta of Adobe Camera Raw 2.4 available
If it's not in the Beta, it won't be in the release. The term has creeped into common usage, but beta doesn't mean incomplete; it means not fully tested. A beta-test is just a test of the software on the customer's computers. By this stage, features have been decided -- no new features are added to a product after it hits an alpha-test version (alpha-testing being the stage before beta-testing, obviously). Re: MZ-S (a new beginning)
I've been using NiMH batteries in my MZ-S since I got the BG-10 in February 2002, with no ill effects. I leave the battery selector on Alkaline. I also use them in the AF-360 flash, again without troubles. I don't know about older flashes. The only problem with these batteries is that their idle life is shorter than alkalines -- even if unused, NiMH batteries will go flat within a few months; alkalines are good for a couple of years. Not really important, unless you go for long periods without using your camera. A good rule with NiCd/NiMH batteries: put them in the charger the night before you intend to use them. -- Kristian On 7 Dec 2004, at 18:47, Nick Clark wrote: I haven't really gotten on very well with the BG-10 grip. They might have had it for a while. My 77 (silver) is serial no. 0003051, and was bought in Dublin (Ireland) in December 2001. The reason for my uncertainty is that if it is the shot that I think it is ( http://www.tanyamayer.com/tan/_igp5088_std.jpg ). Then there is no backlighting at all. In fact, the redness that you see is just the colour of my hair, and possibly some warmth from the tungsten lighting. I lit this shot using only the modelling light in my monobloc, through a large softbox that was really close to my face (in fact, it was barely out of frame). I totally agree about the cropping suggestion, and will do that shortly. What I love about this shot, is the weird angle and low depth of field, resulting in my hair appearing soft as it falls. Also, the general concensus from most has been that the makeup appears to be too dark or red in that particular shot. However, this is the effect that I love! I wanted COLOUR in these shots, with the makeup being the main feature (hence, lack of accessories/and or colour in the background etc). It isn't to every body's taste, but hey, that's what makes it fun! As for 040 being your favourite - I have had many varied reactions to this shot. I am actually quite ambivalent about it myself, not really knowing if I like it or not. What I DO like about it however, is the low depth of field with only the strands of hair being in focus, and my eyes not. I agree with you about the strand of hair over the eyes, and it took me many shots to get that hair to fall just where I wanted it to! lol. Re: Flat Histograms
Hi Dave, The histogram only tells you how many pixels fall into each possible brightness level. Sometimes this can be misleading, because you see in colour, whereas the histogram plot only takes account of brightness (remember how blue sky and clouds appear on BW film?) Your first example sounds like a typical image: widely distributed tones. The second example seems to be saying that there is a large number of image pixels at the same brightness level. I would guess that the blue sky is accounting for nearly half of the total pixels in the image - all of these are bunched around the same brightness, so out of your 6 million pixels, half are roughly the same brightness as the sky; the remaining 3 million pixels are spread out amongst all the other possible grey levels, so it's going to look like a very low level overall with a huge peak around the average sky brightness. Typical studio shots could easily have a huge histogram peak at the grey level of the backdrop sheet, and yet be perfectly exposed for the subject. As long as the peak isn't off the left (under-exposed) or right(over-exposed) of the graph, your exposure should be okay. The real question is: does one image appear to be worse than the other? If not, you don't have a problem. You're producing an image, so trust your eyes, not the readings. -- Kristian On 14 Jun 2004, at 19:58, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Wonder if any one can offer a suggestion on my flat histograms. Re: Pentax *ist D Sample better than Canon 10D Sample?
For a start, you should use Photoshop -- QuickTime will interpolate images at large magnifications. Well, I just had a look at the Canon pic (their example #2), and... how can I say this... did they not notice that the camera focussed well forward of the model? (Look at the sharpness of her elbow compared with her eyes) Maybe the stories about the 10D's AF are true ;-) Actually, why they used AF for a portrait shot is a mystery - the model must have been *delighted* about how sharp the hairs on her arm came out... On the actual topic - the two pics are too different to compare much: I'll wait for the famous DPReview studio scene before I make any decisions about image quality. -- Kristian I must say, after I downloaded both the .jpg and the .tiff images taken with the 10D, I am suitably impressed! I opened the images with Apple's QuickTime Player and the quality of the image is awesome! I blew up the image sizes to at least 3 or 4 times what actual life size would be, and the detail is most incredible! It simply doesn't wash out or pixelate as the image gets larger... That's with the 10D. Now I have to go look for the *ist-D images, but I know that's just going to be an exercise. This quite clearly shows the quality imagery available with digital today... keith whaley

Re: K-AF3 lens mount coming at Photokina
Like Jostein, I kind of had the idea that this was for 645 lenses, but as you say, a TC already projects a wider image circle than the attached lens. The only downside is that you'd lose resolution and speed. Speed wouldn't be much of a problem for the applications you'd use a tilt/shift lens in, as the subject generally isn't going anywhere ;-), but resolution would be. However, starting with a really sharp lens like the 24/2 it wouldn't be too bad... I was tempted by a second hand 28/2.8 shift once, but I wouldn't have used it nearly enough to justify the cost. An adaptor for my 24/2 would be a different story altogether (at 1.4x, you get a 35/2.8, which is still very useful) - or you could just get silly and see what a 280/5.6 shift lens can do ;-) A converter for the 645 lenses still seems like the most likely prospect, though. From a marketing point of view, it even makes sense- as it gets 35mm users into the 645 system without them having to buy a 645 body ;-) -- Kristian On Monday, Sep 2, 2002, at 07:29 Europe/Dublin, Rob Studdert wrote: On 1 Sep 2002 at 15:39, Jostein wrote: A converter for which lenses? t/s demands that the lens can cover a larger negative size than what's inside the camera. K-AF3 lens mount coming at Photokina
Hi all, I've been looking through those recent patent applications, and I've come to the conclusion that something big is coming at Photokina: By big, I mean a new family of lenses including Image stablising lenses and silent focussing motors. Also on the cards looks to be an image-stabilising teleconverter for use with existing lenses :-) (Incidentally, Pentax seems to use the term Image Shake Compensation to describe their version of IS) There is also an intriguing mention of a tilt/shift rear converter, but I suspect this is speculation rather than a real product (I'd buy one, though). However, unlike Alan Chan, I don't believe Pentax is abadoning the K mount. I am very confident that the new lens range will be mechanically compatible with the existing K mount: one of these patents even goes so far as to give the new lens mount the name K-AF3, which only confirms my suspicions. The communications system described in these patents is backwards compatible with the K-AF2 mount used in the current FA- series lenses, meaning that current FA- lenses (and thus, F, A, M and K lenses too) will work with the new mount. However, going by the round-about way that the new lenses identify themselves to the camera, it seems that the new series of lenses will also work with older K-AF mount cameras like the MZ-5 and PZ-1p :-) [Going into the realm of speculation, now]. There seems to be no mechanical difference between the current K-AF2 mount and the proposed new lens (all of these new patents deal with electrical and data-communication issues), which leads me to suspect that some of the existing cameras already support the new lens features: the MZ-S and MZ-6/ZX-L/MZ-L are my candidates, as they clearly use a new family of controller electronics in the bodies. Many patents take a long time to be filed, and even longer to be granted. Typically a product is actually in production by the time the patent paperwork is done. These patents are US filings of original Japanese patents. The Japanese patents date from February 2001, which is before the MZ-S entered production. Just as the FA lenses existed before a camera that took advantage of their digital features (MTF, focus distance, etc.), it is equally possible that Pentax has already released a camera body which can support the new family of lenses. (Of course, as I just bought an MZ-S I sincerely hope that this is the case ;-) ) I know that many companies file patents on products that never arrive, but the three patents posted are so detailed, even down to the level of specifying contol commands sent between the lens and camera that I believe that this is a new lens mount. Also, the three patents are very closely related, and cover different aspects of the same product. This is something which has got to the stage of a late prototype or has entered production already. This new development could also be the reason why we haven't seen a new FA* lens in quite a while... Okay, that's enough speculation for now. -- Kristian
Re: More interesting new Pentax US patent applications
Hi, All the pieces required to digitally control a USM or IF lens are already in place in the K-AF2 mount. The power contacts for PZ lenses are present, and there is already a data link between lens and body (for MTF/focal-length/focus-point info from FA lenses). It is conceivable that this could already be a two-way connection, or that we're going to get just another contact on the existing mount for body-to-lens transfers -- Kristian On Saturday, Aug 31, 2002, at 09:57 Europe/Dublin, Lawrence Kwan wrote: On Fri, 30 Aug 2002, Alan Chan wrote: From: Henry Chu [EMAIL PROTECTED] I think Pentax did try to their best maintain the K-mount but they have admitted defeat finally. Re: More interesting new Pentax US patent applications
From the existing art section of the controller patent, it seems that the PZ lenses already use a two-way data link. The new patent application seems to be just an extension of functionality of the existing KAF2 mount; it may not physically be a new mount -- IF TRUE, this would mean that the MZ-S (and others?) could be capable of using the new lenses either straight off or after a software upgrade. ;-) ;-) ;-) -- Kristian On Saturday, Aug 31, 2002, at 13:08 Europe/Dublin, Kristian Walsh wrote: Hi, All the pieces required to digitally control a USM or IF lens are already in place in the K-AF2 mount. Ah Bruce, Much as I would love to let this little political attack go unanswered, I feel compelled to point out that in the UK and most of Europe, Nikon equipment is actually LESS expensive than Pentax. M50/1.4 fungus remedies?
Hi, Firstly, thanks to all for the tips on the Leica. It turned out to have a messed up shutter (1sec varied between 1 and 2 seconds, and above 125 the shutter didn't fully open). I'm waiting for a quote on a CLA before I put my cash into it. Oh, and the lens had fungus. Speaking of which, the shop had a lovely M50/1.4 (or maybe a K -- don't know how to tell them apart, but it wasn't an A. Minimum focus was 0.48m, and there were 8 aperture blades - the casing felt like plastic over metal). I had a quick try on their MZ-5n body and I was very impressed. I know these questions come up occasionally, so here are some answers to look up in future: - Auto-focus confirmation works (!!) - I was surprised at this, but I suppose there's no reason why it wouldn't. - The metering seems to work fine. I couldn't be entirely sure, but I think spot and centre-weighted metering both work. - The focus feel is fantastic ;-) ... so, why don't I have a nice 50/1.4 now? Well, it had not one but two tiny fungal colonies. Does anyone know how to get rid of these, or is the lens doomed forever? -- Kristian PS. The shop had actually received, and sold, a Contax N Digital, so there must me some around somewhere. Price was 9500, but I think that was with two zoom lenses. OT: Advice on used Leica M2?
Hi, I know this is almost completely non-Pentax(*), but I know there are a few Leica M users lurking here, so here's the question: Is 250 (~$250) a good price for a working M2, or is it too good to be true? Cosmetically, the body is quite battered: the leather cover is a bit torn, the top plate is quite brassy, and there are several dents. The body comes with a 35/f2.5 Summaron lens, and the body serial number is around 106,900. I've popped the shutter and 1/4 and 1/1000, and seems to work. Anything else to look for? I don't want this to collect - I just like the idea of a compact, quiet, 35mm camera that I could bring around with me. Website addresses also gratefully received. -- Kristian (*) A desparate attempt to bring this post back on topic: has anyone ever seen the Pentax 43mm in M mount? - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. New camera speculation (yes, again)
Something that didn't get to the list - Well, the weather featured that particular variety of insidious misty rain we like to call a soft day, thank God here in Ireland, so the camera was idle today. And as there's some saying or other about idle hands and devils' work, I have decided to try to spawn another diabolical speculative camera thread (cue maniacal laughter, bats fly into night, lightning strikes, etc. etc.). Anyway... At the moment there's a large price gap in Pentax's lineup between the MZ-5n/MZ-3, and the MZ-S. I expect it to be filled with another camera, which I imaginatively call the MZ-2 or MZ-4, with MZ-4 being more likely. Most of the electronics and software from the MZ-S, which are by now tried and tested, could be re-used inside a cheaper body, so a speculative feature set would be like: - Shutter up to 1/6000, flash sync at 1/125, or 1/6000 with AF360-FGZ - Digital two-dial control (compensation/PF and shutter speed) like MZ-S. No picture modes. - 6-point AF (with selectable point) identical to MZ-S. - Similar viewfinder coverage and magnification to MZ-5n. - Spot, centre-weighted and pattern metering directly selectable on a dial, like MZ-S (and 5n/3) - Auto-bracketing (but maybe with half- or one stop selected on a PF, not on a direct dial) - P-TTL flash, but no wireless flash control, except in conjunction with AF360-FGZ flash (as opposed to MZ-S's use of the pop-up flash as a controller) - DOF preview and shutter release/power on separate switches for no particular reason except to preserve continuity with MZ-5n and maintain a difference between this camera and the MZ-S - IR shutter release (as in MZ-6) - unlimited multiple exposure facility - leader-out rewind via a PF, but no go to frame N when loading film. - cheap injection-moulded metallic-effect plastic shell around an aluminium frame - little sticker on the bottom saying Made in Vietnam ;-) (meaning no slur - just stating that the MZ-S is currently made in Japan by relatively expensive labour) To justify the continued higher price of the MZ-S, this new camera would NOT have : - Hand-finished magnesium-alloy body and slanted top-plate, carefully filed, sanded and hand-painted by highly-paid Japanese workers ;-) - Data imprinting on film. - MLU self-timer mode - go to frame on film change (which has allowed me to build up a collection of partially-used film rolls ;-) ) - studio flash socket on side - wireless flash control via popup flash. - handy focus now! button on rear ;-) - illuminated lens mount indicator, illuminated display - professional black finish (now I'm kidding! -- I really wanted a silver one myself) - BG-10 grip and vertical shutter release. I think Pentax could make this camera, make it in bigger numbers than the MZ-S, sell it for about US$300 less than the MZ-S, and still earn a nice return on each one, without cannibalising the MZ-S's market segment very much. comments? -- Kristian - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: ZX-L and Pentax Metering
The MZ-6 (ZX-6/ZX-L) is a replacement for the MZ-7, just as the MZ-60 is a replacement for the MZ-30 (btw, does anyone know if the MZ-60 adds the aperture coupling required to properly use non-FA lenses?) The MZ-5n and MZ-3 are still being produced, and feature centre-weighted and spot metering. As the MZ-3 is not available in the US, that leaves you with a choice between the ZX-5n and MZ-S. I suspect that there may be a replacement for the 5n coming soon, as it's now the oldest model in the range. To my mind, the MZ-6 is not that replacement, though... -- Kristian On Sunday, May 5, 2002, at 09:43 pm, Joseph Tainter wrote: Shutterbug describes the ZX-L as a 5n replacement. It sounds to me like the continuing overexposure problem that has plagued Pentax's program metering for slide film. I'd like to be able to recommend Pentax to others. But the MZ-S is the only model now in production that includes other metering modes. How can I recommend Pentax to those who want a moderately-priced body knowing that, when the person eventually tries some slide film, the meter will overexpose? Why won't Pentax fix this? A Contax Aria will set you back around 900 euro; an RX, 1400 euro; and if you feel the need, an RTS III is 2600 euro. All prices are body only. The MZ-S can be had for just under 1000 euro. Interestingly enough, the UK magazine Amateur Photographer reviewed the new Contax NX autofocus N-mount body this month, and at the end, the reviewer cited the MZ-S as its main competitor as he felt both were aimed at the serious enthusiast market. Re: Sigma SD9 w/Foveon Chip
The Contax camera is only arriving now, in March. It was supposed to be on the market last November, and now it's also going to be a really tough sell (even for Zeiss fans with deep pockets) when compared to 6Mp cameras from the Japanese (Pentax excluded, naturally :-( ). Personally, I think Pentax were right not to proceed with the MZ-D as specified. Sure, it would have been nice to have the camera, but wouldn't we be here complaining that it cost four times as much as the Canon D-60 if Pentax had gone ahead with it...? That said, I won't be looking at digital until I can get a full-frame one, and that's always going to be expensive (in IC production, the physical size of the device is the biggest cost, not the number of transistors or sensors or whatever on it). The soft-case is CF-10. There's a common back, CF-10, and three different fronts: S, M and L. The Japanese accessory catalogue I have has a table in it showing the lens compatibility for the hoods, as follows: SMALL, CF-10 (S): FA Zoom 35-80 A Zoom 35-80 FA 20/2.8 A 20/2.8 FA 28/2.8 AL FA 35/2AL[1] FA 43/1.9 Ltd A 50/1.2 FA 50/1.4 [2] FA 50/1.7 [2] FA 77/1.8 Ltd MEDIUM, CF10 (M): FA Zoom 20-35/4 AL [1] FA Zoom 24-90/3.5-90 AL,IF [1] FA Zoom 28-70/4 AL FA Zoom 28-80/3.5-5.6 FA Zoom 28-105/3.2-4.5 AL, IF [1] FA Zoom 28-105/4-5.6 IF [1] FA* 24/2.0 AL, IF [1] FA 31/1.8 AL Limited FA*85/1.4 IF FA 135/2.8 IF FA Macro 50/2.8 FA Macro 100/3.5 LARGE, CF10 (L): FA* Zoom 28-70/2.8 AL FA Zoom 28-105/4-5.6 FA Zoom 28-200/3.8-5.6 AL,IF [1] FA Zoom 70-200/4-5.6 FA Zoom 80-200/4.7-5.6 A Zoom 80-200/4.7-5.6 FA Macro 100/2.8 There are two notes on the table, which I can't read, but I've marked them [1] and [2] in the list. [2] only applies to the two FA 50mm lenses, and says something (I think) about a filter (firuta) or rubber hood (or rabaahuudu in the katakana ;-) ). Note [2] says something about filter and hood, but again, I can't decipher the kanji. German mail-order site Technik Direkt (www.technikdirekt.de) lists the CS-10 fronts for 40, 45 and 50 euro for the S, M and L respectively. The back, part CS-10 costs 35 euro. Re: Pentax MZ-S questions and some observations
Hi Aleksandar, Congratulations on finding a second-hand MZ-S! 2) When using old screw mount Takumars with original Pentax screw mount adapter, I don't have focus confirmation at all - why is that? I can't remember where I read it, but I think that the focus confirmation only works with lenses faster than f/5.6. With a true K-mount lens, the body uses the aperture lever to open up the diaphragm while focusing, so the focusing works regardless of what you set the aperture at. However, I imagine that if you use an adaptor without aperture coupling, and stop down below 5.6, the camera sees a fixed aperture lens that's slower than f/5.6, and focus confirmation system doesn't work. AF is louder, hunts more and sometimes (rarely, but it happens) when it says it is in focus, it actually is way off If the focus seems way off in the finder, shoot a couple of pictures anyway and see how they come out. You could have a misaligned mirror or a faulty dioptre correction. Also have a look at what PF 8 is set to, as this controls AF fallback (1= use neighbouring sensor, 2 = don't use neigbour if can't lock on selected sensor). The AF could be failing on your selected sensor, falling back to the neigbouring one, and focusing on whatever's in that. Re: Spot Metering
Hi, Spot metering seems to be in the enthusiast/professional feature list for most manufacturers. The MZ-7 is an entry level camera, so it has picture modes instead. From a technical point of view, there is very little reason for the MZ-7 not to have spot metering, because it already has a multi-segment meter. The spot meter on the MZ-5n appears to just use the central meter segment, so it should be possible for the MZ-7 to do the same... but if it did, few would pay the extra for the MZ-5n ;-) The spotmeter was the main reason I got an MZ-5n to go with my MZ-M: I seem to use the spotmeter more than I use the autofocus ;-) The MZ-6 due soon seems to have spot metering (via the AE-lock button?), but you need to go to a custom function to enable it. The MZ-6 is set to be priced a little higher than the MZ-7, but less than the 5n. -- Kristian On Friday, January 4, 2002, at 05:26 pm, Chris Gligoris wrote: I am trying to figure out which Pentax bodies offer spot metering, because I don't have an external spot meter and I do need an extra body, so I thought I could combine these . So the two groups are as follows: First group Z1, Z1p Z5, Z5p MZS MZ3 MZ5 MZ5n Second group SF7/SF10 Z10, Z10p Z20, Z20p Z50, Z50p Is the above correct or I am missing something here? VAT on imports (was: Re:FS: Soliglor CD 100/2 PK in England)
VAT can only be deducted if an item is: 1. New 2. Being shipped to a customer outside of the EU. If you live in one EU member country and buy from another, your VAT/MOMS/MWSt (or whatever it's called locally) is paid at source -- that is, the country in which the item was sold. If you live outside the EU and buy from an EU member, then you can ask for the tax to be deducted. You are still liable to any import duties applied by your own government though. This of couse applies only to non VAT-registered private citizens. The rules for businesses are far more complex... OT: help with old Disc films
Hi, Remember the argument against digital which said that in 20 years, nobody would be able to read the images ;-) Over the Christmas, I unearthed three old disc films (One Fuji, two Kodak), which had been taken sometime in the mid 1980's, and then left undeveloped. As they were stored in a cool dark environment inside their cases, I guess there's still something left on them A quick trip around the local photo processors lead to some humourous, but not very useful exchanges. It seems that disc fim predates the staff in most 1-hour shops -- one told me first that they don't print from digital ;-). As it's C41 film, I don't think the development is the problem, just finding someone with a printer which still accepts the disc films. Anyway, if anyone knows any way to recover the pictures from these three films, I would be very grateful. -- Kristian - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Pentax New Year's Predictions?
Bliain nua shona dhuitse go léir, or happy new year to everyone on the PDML --- even those of you still, for the moment at least, living in 2001 ;-) My only prediction -- apart from the 10 megapixel full-frame MZ-D being launched at a price of $100.00, of course ;-) -- is that I will at some stage during the year submit a picture to the PUG. Need to get my hands on that scanner first, though... ;-) 7. Few who buy anything new or used, will find that it actually improved their photography. There's a lot to be said for living up to good equipment. There's also the impetus to take more pictures that having a nice new (or new to me) lens or body to play with brings. Sadly, a good set of lenses really takes away your excuses for bad pictures, but that just gives another kick in the direction of taking better pictures. Re: OT: help with old Disc films
It seems that the march of progress has left Disc film behind (some might say with good reason)... I reckon that because it's just C-41, a mini-lab with a set of tanks should be able to do the developing. That leaves me with the more difficult problem of finding somewhere that can print from a disc film... Maybe I should try Kodak themselves, as it was their bright idea in the first place... -- Kristian On Tuesday, January 1, 2002, at 01:55 am, Rob Studdert wrote: Hmm, I agree, I missed the undeveloped bit :-( - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: 85mm vs 77mm, and 43mm
Bob S. said: [The FA*24/2]'s price is cheaper than the limited lenses, but it's performance is just as notable. Well at the moment, a new 43/1.8 Ltd can be had for GBP 289.00 via mail order from the UK, while a new FA*24/2.0 is still around GBP 350. I have both the 43 and 24 and use both, but I wouldn't use them interchangeably -- I tend to use the 43 for normal subjects (my 50mm is a macro lens, and a such is a bit heavy for general use), and the 24/2.0 for the sweeping landscape stuff. I would second Bob S's praise of the 24 lens - if only it had a better lens hood -- I find the hood on my 24 very awkward to fix onto the lens quickly. Jim replied: I admit to finding the 50 annoyingly long sometimes If this is the case, the 43 could be the lens for you - it's narrow enough to use as a normal lens, but wide enough to get a bit of perspective into your pictures. I find a use for both a 50mm and 43mm lens. At the other end, if I already had an 85mm, I couldn't see much benefit in getting a 77, and would put the cash to a 24/2.0 instead. -- Kristian - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Question about 70-200 f4-5.6 (power zoom)
Howdy, I recently (ie., today) picked up a used FA 70-200 power zoom lens, and I was wondering if anyone here knew something about it, as it doesn't seem to be in the current lens catalogue. There's a push button and sliding switch on the side of the barrel just forward of the zoom ring that I can't figure out. The switch has three positions, marked P A - AS. The switch will click between between P and A, but can only be pushed from the A to AS position briefly before it springs back. Has anyone any idea what these controls do? They don't seem to have any effect on the operation of the lens with my MZ-5n. Any info or pointers would be appreciated, -- Kristian - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: MZ-5n and grip
Hi, .Does the grip help make it FEEL like the older bigger AF/MF cameras.I'v grown used to the grip on the SF-1,nice and big. I have a battery grip on the MZ-5n. It adds a bit of weight and bit of height (around 1/2.5cm) to the camera, which I find more comfortable with my big hands. Against that, there is a tendancy for the camera to tip forward when it's placed down on a flat surface. Re: Second Body
Hi Ed, The ZX-M was my first camera, and the 5n is my second, so I'm going the other way from you :-), but here's my .02 euros worth: 1. The mount is fine. I wouldn't hang a 600mm lens off it, but I have used it with my 24mm/f2.0 (around 400g) without any trouble. Okay it's polycarbonate, but so is bullet-proof glass: I don't believe Pentax would sell the camera with a plastic mount to save costs if it generated more returns because it wasn't able to hold their heavier lenses. Perversely, I think my 43mm/1.9 mates more snugly with the plastic mount on the MZ-M than the 5n's metal mount, but then I'm weird... 2. The M is a manual focus camera, so it doesn't need a circular polariser. If you don't have any polariser at all, get a circular to use on the M and/or 5n; if you want one for the M only, then a linear polariser is fine, and will produce better results. 3. The MZ-M's viewfinder is brighter than the 5n's, as it has a fully-reflective mirror sending light to it. The shutter and aperture info in the viewfinder can be hard to see in bright light, but is no worse than on the 5n. -- Kristian - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. 35mm lens info on Pentax Japan site.
Hi, While looking around Pentax Japan to see if there were any pictures of the MZ-6, I came across an interesting PDF. It's the 35mm lens range catalogue, and I wonder why one of the regional sales companies hasn't translated it into English -- I think it would be very useful: http://www.pentax.co.jp/japan/product/catalog/pdf/35_lenses.pdf Okay, it's all in Japanese, but the facts and figures at the end are easy to pick out. There are pictures of each lens along with an optical diagram. It may be the only place you'll see some of the more exotic lenses... Also, the recommeded prices are given for each lens - up to a massive 1,300,000 Yen for the FA*250-600 monster zoom... Re: Getting better lenses for my MZ5?
Hi Rob, At a normal focal length, try to get a 43mm/1.9 second hand: it's been out for 4 years, so there are a few around. I've seen them for around GBP 160-250 depending on condition. In fact, some shops in London were selling the 43mm new (divorced from an MZ-3 kit, no doubt) for GBP 299. I think it's well worth it. My 24/f2 tests as sharper than the 43, but there's something about the quality of the 43's focus that's more pleasing to the eye. The 24/f2 is also a lovely lens, but only if you'd like a wideangle, of course. I have no experience of the 77 or 31 limiteds, but some of the other replies make me want to try the 77... ;-) -- Kristian Rob Geraghty wrote, in part: So far, the Pentax f3.5 100mm lens and the Pentax f1.7 50mm lenses look like good value. Re: Autofocus on MZ5 (ZX5)
Hi, If the focus is still wrong on the film, it's probably the lens. But did you check the dioptre setting on the viewfinder? I had a similar experience until I realised what had happened. Best way to find out is to take half a roll on AF, and the other half on MF, and compare the results. -- Kristian On Monday, November 5, 2001, at 03:40 AM, Rob Geraghty wrote: I've noticed that the autofocus on my MZ5 seems less accurate now than when I first got it. The lens is a Sigma 28-80 f3.5-5.6. I suspect the contacts between the lens and camera may need cleaning, but I'm not sure how to do that. I also have to check whether it is certain filters making the problem worse. Circular polarisers don't seem to help. It makes AF a bit pointless because I end up manually focussing. Hi, I've been using it for a while. The only thing I can say is that the filtering sucks. You can just about get it to move stuff around, (Preferences, Rules) based on sender, but it's a lot less sophisticated than Eudora (which I think has the best filtering around) or Outlook/Entourage. Avoid AddressBook like the foetid carbuncle it is. Also Dock gets very annoying very quickly - have a look at DragThing for X (www.dragthing.com) which is far far more useful, and I'm not just saying that because I know the author ;-) And finally, to drag this kicking and screaming back on-topic, my 43mm 1.9 arrived yesterday evening ;-).
