Re: Exposure Lock on ME Super?
The 2 that I have experience with are xr-p and xr-m. Paul has used xr-p too and has given it favourable review here. He found it to have a less vibration compared to his Super A (wrong model?). Our comparitive points about the 2 are: + Bright viewfinder and 0.88x mag for xr-p (.80 for M) . Built in winder on xr-m (+ for me, - for paul. he prefers to attach winder if needed). - ISO overide in xr-m only by taping over the DX contacts or setting exp. comp + exposure comp is in 1/3rd steps. . xr-p has aperture relay port. xr-m doesnt. + DOF in xr-m. not available in xr-p. + spot-metering in xr-m. not in xr-p. xr-m also has backlight compensation but thats +usually better done yourself. . xr-m takes 4 AA batteries. Which is good because I sort of carry a spare set in the flash and they last longer. I drained the battery on my xr-10 too quickly becuase i took several long exposure shots. On the -ve side AA battery grip on the side also makes it a little oddball to grip for me. Its nice when holding normally but when taking vertical shots, i have found it better to keep the battery side (which is also the shutter release side) below or the camera is less stable in my hands due to the top being heavier. The fact that i have found the xr-m's shutter button a little stiff doesnt help either. xr-10 (non-prog) is great this way. metering is activated by a longish button that falls under your right hand fingers and shutter release is sensitive and quick. . xr-p takes standard threaded cable release. you need a wireless or wired plug-in (2.5mm jack?) type thingie for xr-m. I havent had experience with the other program models (kr-30sp, 20sp, xr-3xpf etc) but have read favorable reviews about them. The caveat ofcourse is getting program lenses (ricoh P lenses) is not easy. One could try to make their pentax-a lenses into AP lenses :) or use 3rd party ones. I have been able to (tho i must say i was lucky) to get the 50/1.4, 28/2.8, 28-100/4, 70-210/3.9,70-300/4.5-5.6 P lenses. Vivitar 19/3.8 also works in program mode. Re: Downloading the PUG
There is an equivalent of wget for windows systems. You basically drop the URL http://pug.komkon.org/02may/ (for this months thing) into it. Ask it to fetch everything from it recursively but not to span domains or ascend directory structure (so it wont goto http://pug.komkon.org/anyonther_link_not_starting_with_02may ). You can make it accept only html and jpg files (or only jpg files if you dont want to see the rest of picture info) etc. Having said that there is a program for your needs, I dont remember what it was called :) I think there are a couple of them. I used it long time ago while doing internship and being forced to use windows based machine. It was pretty good and free (or was there a trial period?) although still not as versatile as wget :) Ofcourse there is a windows executable version of wget itself :)(see http://www.interlog.com/~tcharron/wgetwin.html ) But it runs only from the command prompt (ie no gui unless it changed since i last used it on windows 2 yrs ago) which some find bothersome while others desire. There is another program called cURL (again has windows version as well -- http://curl.haxx.se/ ) which has even more features than wget. I havent used if much tho. cheers, nitin On Wed, May 01, 2002 at 03:43:34PM +1000, Anthony Farr wrote: Dear Pugmeisters, Is there an easy way to download the whole PUG without clicking through each picture individually. I am going to sell 2 of them when I have more time. I'd still like to try an XR RIkenon 50/1.4P, which I hear may be even better from f/2 to f/4. When introducing the P versions, Ricoh gave its XR Rikenon 50/1.4 and 50/1.7 a tweaked optical design and multicoating. The 50/2, I believe, remained optically unchanged. The Sears versions of the 1/4 and 1.7 are the pre-P versions; I don't know about the Sears 50/2. The XR designation was dropped and lenses were called Rikenon P. Re: Your desert-island kit?
If non-pentax k-mount bodies are allowed, the ricoh's xr-s (has solar cells) could be 1 option for a sunny island where battery availability is an issue and one really wants TTL metering and other assorted power requiring goodies. However, if I was on a desert island, batteries would be a problem, so the best choice then would be my Honeywell Spotmatic with the Vivitar 50mm 1.8. The body and lens to come from your current gear selection. What will it be, and why? I'll go first: My MZ-S and SMC-A 50mm F2.8 Macro. Why? I love the MZ-S user interface. The 50 is wide enough for at least some people shots, works well as a landscape lens, and is a reasonable macro lens. The two questions I have are: 1. Which 35mm camera body should I get (Pentax of course). An old manual focus classic or a new, auto focus gem? If so why and if not why not? pleasantly surprised by my xr-m
I finished my first roll of film in my xr-m. It was a pleasant surprise to find out when opening the back to take the film out that the leader was still out! The manual makes no mention of film leader out on rewind but if this is a assumed feature its pretty neat(and i hope the midroll rewind does the same). I always wanted that in my auto-rewind cameras (xr-10m doesnt have it. zx-5n doesnt). No of shots left (once it is less than 9 on DX encoded film) display in viewfinder can be helpful too tho i dont think i would ever use that. On the negative side, it doesnt let me fire the shutter unless there is film inside. And the rewind is noisy. its neat. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. hi, On Sun, Apr 14, 2002 at 09:52:57PM +0100, Bob Walkden wrote: Hi, On the Contax RX you have a PF option which lets you choose whether to rewind fully into the cassette, or leave the leader out. I used to make it rewind fully, but that caused problems when I wanted to mid-roll rewind, so changed to leader out. One good feature of the camera is that when it's finished rewinding, if you do want to wind back into the cassette you just push the rewind lever again and back in it goes. Very convenient. The new pentax zx-l also has this feature and i was considering buying that once my 5n died. But i heard people complaining about its pentamirror so havent bought it yet. Wanted to try it out first. But now i think i dont do much photography that warrants AF anyways so i am okay with my MF cameras. That does leave my 500ftz lying around unused for now. I am actually also considering buying a contax slr system (was very impressed by the G2 and now have a G1+45mm lens). But cant afford to do it now so waiting for a better time or a good deal :). I am thinking between 167MT, AX, and maybe RX as the body (might just get a yashica body if money is tight) and of course zeiss lenses. An even better idea, imo, is to have a smart rewind. If it rewinds automatically on end-of-roll then it should rewind fully back into the cassette. If the photographer initiates the rewind by pressing the lever then it should leave the leader out. yep that would be neat. But there should be override mechanism there too in case someone wants it. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Re: Can K1000 meter correctly with M42 lenses ?
In the auto mode, the lens diaphragm stays open so the meter needle wont move. And the K-mount cams have no mechanism to push the pin of SM lens which causes the lens to stop down. So one has to always use them in manual setting (ie stop down metering). This actually allowed me to buy cheaply lenses with stuck auto-man switch or sticky diaphragm but otherwise good for use on k-mount bodies as these dont matter :) On Thu, Apr 11, 2002 at 12:41:30AM -0600, William Robb wrote: That would explain the several stops discrepancies I got between metering with a 50mm f/2 bayonet lens and a 55mm f/2 M42 lens, I guess. I also discovered that the lens needs to be in the manual setting to get the meter to deflect at all. William Robb Yes it can! When you put the screwmount adapter on, the open aperture sensor on the K1000 body, goes to rest on the WIDE OPEN position, that is to say the camera thinks the lens will operate at zero stops down from the current aperture setting. Thus as you stop the lens down it gives a true reading as the aperture gets smaller or larger. This is the way the original spotmatic meter works except it didnt have a aperture cam sensing resistor and always assume the f-stop chosen was the fstop for shooting. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: The Queen Mum
Japan and most of east asia (china, phillipines etc) are still not on the best of terms. What is history and what is recent past are very subjective. Its great that many animosities went by in a couple of generations -- that is source of hope that things turn out well. It is also true that some didn't -- and that is a warning that things can go wrong. Blind optimism that all animosity goes away is idiocy. Some of it needs harder scrubbing to wipe out. You need to understand that. Being optimistic about it is correct attitude as long as you realize it doesnt happen that way always. Each of these case is different enough that the only rule you can carry over from one to the next is: everyones better off if its worked out instead of letting it smoulder. You dont whack bin laden on the head and say dude, be enlightened. Dont harbor hatred of centuries past. That wont work. He already has it. He is a gone case. What is important is to realise that whether its unenlightened or not, such hatred exists and its better dealth with before it causes a disaster. And all this has nothing to do with the queen. This is even more OT and only started because I responded to someone's post about not pulling up things from long ago. And I am not learning history at princeton. Did she ever express so much as a belief that colonialism's impact might be harmful? An ordinary person's opinion might not have mattered. Hers would have. She is morally responsible. Legally, maybe not. Now whos doing what here ? I didnt attack anyone on the list personally. I say the queen is responsible and i say it again. Defend that if you must. Dont bunk the strawman. Again, you cannot demonstrate that the Queen Mum had any control or authority to change British policity. Did any member of royal family ever say (even unofficially) that colonialism was harming the native population in places where it obviously was ? Present british folks I have met admit wrongs were done and that is enough for me. I know the british govt helped in ways it could after India became independent. But was there an admission of wrong-doing? no. What does that mean ? tact-schmact. If you have problems with HOW i said things, that is fine. I can change my tact if someone has a problem but address WHAT i said as well. I have a problem with your lack of understanding of responsibility. It is paticularly obnoxous to me that you attempt to make the Queen Mum responsible for something over which she had no control or authority. She may have been Queen, but she had NO AUTHORITY. She was titled Queen because her husband George VI was King. Rail against him if you must. The authority actually rested squarely with the British Parliament. You, being Indian, should know this. England took great amounts of wealth from india (at the cost of welfare of the people there) over a long time. You say the british parliament is responsible ? Who elected them ? Whose bidding were they doing ? The people of england. The queen is part of the people of england. They all share in some of the responsibility. Why was her stand particularly important ? She was the queen. No authority or control you say ? Thats a lame excuse. She had the capacity to do something about it. She didnt. Did she ever say she should have ? No. India. People there have done wrong too (and sadly they do it more to each other everyday). I still hold some of them dear but I wont deny that they are responsible for their actions (or failure to take action). So there we are. You are nothing but piss and hate. I was using mostly SM lenses till a while back tho not on a k1000 but first a vivitar 4000s and then a ricoh xr-10. No one thinks bin laden was a victim and pushed into terrorism (well maybe his supporters do). You hold him RESPONSIBLE for what he did. You dont say well so and so things happened in his life which made him do so but otherwise he is good man. So you cant say hey she just happened to become queen and her ancestors did all the colonization. She continued it and by that endorsed it. Even though one is not responsible for what was done in past but one can become a party to it depending upon how you choose to react to it. Some do remember what your predecessors did and DO hold you responsible (you can say its shouldnt be so, but if it is, it is). Sept 11 wouldnt have happened if no one was like that. No one is going to land a plane in buckingham palace but some do hold its present and past inhabitants responsible for a lot (even if it was done passively). So while many may rightly feel loss at her death, there are others in the world who are, again rightly, not at all unhappy about her death. Only a mindless few. Even if they indeed are few and are mindless, they exist and exist in this world. Which is what i said to begin with. Not everyone is sad to see her die. Also this is a dangerous classification to make. For eg, I KNOW a fair fraction of indians dont like british in general (and british authorities in particular). With a population of over a billion, that is NOT FEW (Its more than the population of US itself if I extrapolate from fractions I know). Second, calling them mindless is only refusing to try to see WHY they might have such an opinion. And that is only inviting disasters in future (like sept 11 was). One may wipe out taliban once but what about 20yrs down the line when their children grow up remembering the bombs that destroyed their lives ? I was not going to say this, but were you born an asshole, or did you have to take a course. James Unsubscribing. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: New lister and some questions (long- sorry)
I dont shoot fast moving objects much so my opinion might not work for you but i didnt find this inconvenient. Often i could just focus stopped down directly and in case it was too dark, open a few stops, focus and quicky stop down again. But if you are used to using program mode then this would be inconvenient for you :) If you are careful you can get good buys on ebay. Photo.net and rec.photo.marketplace and this list itself are other sources to look at. In case you are interested, i am getting rid of some SM lenses myself. cheers, nitin On Mon, Apr 08, 2002 at 10:53:26PM -0400, TM wrote: So if I use screwmount lenses on a K-mount body, I'll have to focus w/ the aperture open, then meter stopped down? That's a lot of work, maybe not too bad for shooting non-moving subjects or when shooting at the same spot and focus for a time. I gotta think about that- I might have to buy some screwmount bodies, then. Anyone have recommendations for a good source for this stuff? I hesitate to use ebay because I'm concerned about getting a good camera. Taka - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: 135-600mm lens on 3011BN+3030 head setup
look before you leap principle :) Better to ask in case its a strict nono rather than see things go in front of you and think frantically about stopping it Or in case there is something to ensure or watch out for (dont want the thing collapsing when i am not looking to catch it) etc. On Mon, Apr 08, 2002 at 10:18:39PM -0500, Chris Brogden wrote: On Mon, 8 Apr 2002, Nitin Garg wrote: I have a bogen 3011N with 3030 head and it serves me well with the small itty-bitty lenses I have. With the cam body about 1 lbs, thats making it really close to the max weight. Should i try using this tripod or get a beefier one ? Since you're getting the lens, and already have the pod/head combo, why not try it for yourself and see if you can detect any movement? chris - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: RE: Leaf Shutters
the book Photographic Materials and Processes by Leslie Stroebel, John Compton, Ira Current, and Richard Zakia has an explaination of why this happens and has a table of corrections to use. This is caused, according to Kodak, by the geometry of the lens-shutter-diaphragm assembly combined with inertia of moving parts, and is not a manufacturing defect. I have heard this as well. I did test my 90mm leaf lens shutter against the camera shutter. I don't recall seing any glaring differences. This might mean my 6x7 body has a slow shutter. This would be no surprise, given the size of the thing. I don't recall ever using a view camera shutter faster than about 1/30th of a second. I warn you. I wouldnt mount that lens on anything but the biggest of tripods/heads... JCO - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
