Apple Mail doesn't automate mailing list subs/unsubs, but it can use the
List-id header in filters (rules); by default the filter setup options
don't include List-id, but it is easy to add the header (Edit Header List…
in the popup for defining conditions for a rule), and it is the best header
to use for defining filters for mailing lists (in general, not just PDML)

I've reactivated my old Fastmail account and that seems to be working

By coincidence, the other mail service that was giving me grief suddenly

Dave,

Besides the information in the footer of the message, there is information
in the headers of the message. The headers are typically not shown by the
mail program (or web-mail interface), but you can see them by choosing an
option View all headers (or whatever it is, depending on the tool).

Here how it looks in the raw:

List-Id: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml.pdml.net
List-Unsubscribe: http://pdml.net/mailman/options/pdml_pdml.net,
mailto:pdml-requ...@pdml.net?subject=unsubscribe
List-Archive: http://pdml.net/pipermail/pdml_pdml.net/
List-Post: mailto:pdml@pdml.net
List-Help: mailto:pdml-requ...@pdml.net?subject=help
List-Subscribe: http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net,
mailto:pdml-requ...@pdml.net?subject=subscribe

Some mail programs are smart enough to interpret those headers
and tell you that the message contains list management information.

I am glad that information was helpful.

Igor

Re: List Problems

2015-06-15 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Brian,

A few days ago (June 9 or 10), I've seen that the mail-archive was stack
for a few hours, as it was not getting any new messages, while I was
getting (digests) those just fine. Then either it cleared up by itself or
Doug used a proverbial plunger.

Since that I haven't noticed much of a problem.

In the recent past (1-2 months ago), I've see that a few
original thread messages didn't make it to that same archive, while the
followups did. I don't know why. (I have my suspicions that it could've
been related to the long URLs inside those messages that were not in those
replies that went through to the archive. I wonder if the
mail-archive.com's own anti-spam filters may have been triggered by those
URLs.)

Just in case: you don't have to use the web-based interface to
subscribe/unsubscribe.
Any e-mail you get from PDML contains list management information, how to
subscribe/unsubscribe.

In short:
To subscribe a particular account, send from it an e-mail to the address:
pdml-requ...@pdml.net
With the Subject: subscribe
To unsubscribe, use the Subject: unsubscribes.
Use Subject:help
to get more information about the commands.

Follow the instructions you get in the response from the list-management
server.

Hope that helps,

Igor

Thanks for CC'ing that to me because it hasn't come though on the list.

The normal list archives aren't accessible because of the list

It's working again from another mail account. I don't talk that much
on the list, the lost words must be minimal.

I had a similar problem back in the spring. Unsubscribed and
resubscribed but that didn't fix it. Subscribed from a different email
account, and suddenly both started working! I have no idea what went wrong.

you can select All Mail rather than Inbox on the folder list

Further, because your own posts have already been displayed to you,
they appear as read mail and won't be boldface. And unlike new mail
from other senders, the thread won't get promoted to the top of the
list. It's a good idea to star your own posts so they'll stand out
in the list and be easier to track.

Both are rather in the large canoe/sailing dinghy category, which is
admittedly up, somewhat, from the stain on the national honour/leaky
canoe status of the Molbatts product.

I was rather partial to Fin du Monde and Iron Duke back when I could
drink beer; from Unibrew and the Wellington County Brewery,
respectively.

TeleNor has quite good routing agreements with the operators of the American
backbones.

NextGenTel, which is my provider, has not. :-(

Join the club, Paul! :-)

The number of list oddities has indeed been on the sharp rise lately. I expect
that spam is part of the problem, but I think it's not the only problem.

From here, the routing seems to have changed lately. When pinging the list
server with NeoTrace!, the signal used to go this way:

Norway - Amsterdam - New York - Baltimore

Baltimore is as far as NeoTrace! can follow it. Now, however, it takes a more
complicated route:

Norway - Amsterdam - New York - Southwark (London, UK) - Washington DC -
Baltimore

The cumulative response time (latency) is effectively doubled by this, which
could affect email transmission. Especially in high-traffic periods.

Routing is in general determined by routing agreements between different ISPs
and their network operators, which could contribute to explain why the problem
is different from ISP to ISP.

Since Sunday (and this is now THursday in my part of the

bother writing this but don't want
anyone to think I'm ignoring their replies to something - I
only saw one post of mine come

The cumulative response time (latency) is effectively doubled by this, which

Routing is in general determined by routing agreements between different ISPs
and their network operators, which could contribute to explain why the problem
is different from ISP to ISP.

 Jostein

Jostein,

In short: unless the latency time is several (many!) seconds (as opposed to
tens or hundreds milliseconds) mail traffic will not be affected.
If the latency is a few seconds occasionally you can see messages arriving
out of order.
If you can reliably browse american websites, e-mail traffic will not
be affected by the latency time.

In a bit more detail:
1. Packet routing is a dynamic process. Besides, it might not be (and very
often it is not) symmetric, i.e. packets going from you to another
computer could be following a different route from those coming back.
2. If the latency is high, but steady (i.e. doesn't fluctuate wildly),
this should not cause TCP packets being lost
3. SMTP protocol implementation is such that if transmission
is not successful, it will be retried until completed successfully
or until the delay due to retries exceeds some preset time (usual default -
5 days).
4. SMTP protocol (high level protocol used for transmitting e-mails)
uses so-called TCP connection (low-level packet transmission protocol),
which is capable
of retransmitting dropped packets (TCP packets) and reassembling them
in the right order if they came out of order due to mildly fluctuating
latency.
5. Traceroute that you are using to check packet routing has different
implementations and could use different packets (in most cases those are
so-called ICMP packets). Depending on the implementation of the router,
these packets can have much-much lower priority then the TCP packets,
or sometimes could be completely blocked by some ISPs.
So, while usually one can get a rather adequate picture using
traceroute, in some weird cases, such a picture could be irrelevant
to the real situation. I've seen such cases.

As far as I can tell, the response time from your ISP to
the US does not exceed 200-300 ms which is rather standard for
transatlantic connection.

Mind you, this is not a bad way to go. On one or two lists I've

messages from a digest. It gives people time to think before
responding and not just react out of hand. I'm not suggesting that

On this list the digest has consistently produced posts containing the
whole digest as a quote. If I wanted to read a digest I would subscribe
to the digest, but I would not post messages to the list from it. Also
unless the digest has changed it is hard to follow threads in it.

Doug has said he is changing things, both the list software and the ISP.
That will take a while to set up, I guess. I can certainly put up with
this for a week or two.

The proper way to reply to a post read from the digest is to:

a) hit reply, delete the digest copy quotation that is usually auto-
entered

b) copy into the reply only the relevant material you want to quote
c) replace the subject of the message with re: original thread
subject

d) add your response
e) send to the list address

It requires more than just hitting the reply button. I get both (two
accounts subscribed) and respond from either, depending upon whether
the post I want to respond to has made it to me individually or not.
I often check the digest to see if other responses have already been
made to a given post.
