Well, add me to the carmarant contingent! We have a '78 MGB, blue.
For years it was my husband's daily driver, first in Boston in
graduate school, then later at Wright-Patt AFB... When our family grew
to four, it went to live at my in-law's house in Michigan. It was
kind of sad to see it go, towed on a trailer behind the minivan from
Mass to Mich... This summer, we went to visit family (and car) in
Michigan, and our 17 year old son has since started scheming the MG's
return to the East Coast...

I'll let him know about your inventory, Larry!

A good start would be able to buy 10 books - there's a 10% discount
for ordering 10 or more, so that brings the wholesale price down to
29.66 each (plus shipping, so say about $30.00 each).

So $300.00 would be a reasonable target. Any extra can go into either
extra books to sell (at GFM for example) or possible placing a small

Anyone have any advertising or promotion ideas/suggestions. I thought

Glad you got it to work... FWIW, I have a MBP hooked up to a Dell
U3011, and my in-house tech support (and long-suffering hubs) had
similar issues getting the pair to play nice. A mini display port to
display port adapter did the trick. We also did some fiddling with
the default setting for the video card... I don't recall exactly what
the issue was, but I think there are two video cards in the MBP, and
we had to select the more vigorous one to use with the Dell
monitor...?

On the other hand, we never tried a musical/rhythmic intervention on
it, so maybe that would have worked, too.

Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm, anyone?

2011-06-11 Thread Christine Nielsen
Hello all,

Curious if anyone has tried or been tempted by this one?

I'll be traveling to Barcelona in a couple of weeks, and am
experiencing a pre-trip enablement crisis of sorts. Last summer, I
packed light for our summer vacation, with only one 17-70 lens, and I
kind of regretted it. So, this summer, my original plan was to bring
along my k-7, the sigma 17-70 lens, the pentax 50-135, and 50/1.4.
But, I wonder how much patience I'll have for lens-swapping
lens-schlepping on the family vaca, and maybe the 18-135 (for day),
plus the 50/1.4 (evening wear) is a better solution. Then again, why
own the lovely 50-135, and not bring it? OTOH, I bet the 18-135 is a
fine substitute for the sigma, though not as fast by a stop.

My dilemma gets down to the question of the travel lens... assuming
you are not on photo safari, does it make sense to have a super-zoom
for travel, and leave the super-nice lens at home? Security, packing
light, ease of use all factor in... but, also image quality... what
say you?

I am also experiencing a pre-trip wardrobe crisis, but I think I'll
have to seek help on another list for that one.

:)
Thanks,

Christine, the on-line reviews of 18-135 are a mixed bag. I attribute it
either to significant sample variation or to potential bias of the reviewer.

I know... it can be hard to sort out the truth in online reviews (of
all kinds). It did seem that those who were happiest with the lens
had a k-5... which introduces a whole 'nother kind of enablement
crisis..

Ultimately it depends on your shooting style and your willingness to carry
bulk and weight. Personally, I traveled several times with a small set of
 primes (21, 43, 77 or even 21 and 50) and it worked for me. I don't
particularly like shooting longer than 77 mm on APS-C camera so that I
cannot say too much about 50-135. Assuming Barcelona is similar to Oslo,
Brussels, London or Prague that I visited, (speaking purely
photographically, of course) I'd go for a quality wider lens and worry less
 for telephoto end.

Another vote for the 21mm! For my own shooting style, I prefer to
keep things simple. I am deathly afraid of fumbling an expensive lens
on a busy city sidewalk or onto the sand at the beach. So, I'm not
sure I'd have the courage to take a set of primes on a family trip...
But I like the idea of the 21 plus the 50-135 and/or the 50...

It would make Pentax great good to introduce DA* 16-50 with the same AF
motor as there is in 18-135, but I recall they said specifically that they
 won't...

Any luck on your trade? I made Ecke an offer for his, but haven't

Yet another vote for the 21mm! Hmm... I also have the 100mm macro,

Paul,

I enjoyed those, having lived in Dayton in the 1990s, when my husband
was stationed at Wright-Patt. The scenes from the AF Museum are very
familiar, it was a must-see attraction when we had visitors from out
of town... I also recognized Carillon Park (the Happy Hormone House is
a new one for me, though!). What is the residential neighborhood
pictured? Oakwood?

Thanks for the memories...!

weatherproof vs sandproof?

2010-07-27 Thread Christine Nielsen
While I was in the water with my kids yesterday at the beach, a pack
of seagulls descended on our pile of gear in search of food. To bring
my camera to the beach, I had taken the foam camera bag insert from my
handbag, in which it usually resides, and placed it inside a plastic
grocery bag, tied shut, to keep the sand and water out. I placed that
whole mess inside our beach bag, safely nestled among the towels, etc.
There was no food in that bag. But that didn't stop those winged
varmints from looking! I think they have learned that plastic grocery
bags usually contain food (last week, I saw a gull fly off with a bag
of snacks from a family's stash), so when they found the one with my
camera, they pulled it out, dragged it across the sand, and opened it,
unceremoniously dumping out the contents. Imagine my horror upon
finding the business end of my lens half-submerged in sand, surrounded
by hundreds of webbed foot prints!

I did my best to carefully brush off the sand. It was everywhere.
The on/off switch was sticky at first, but that seems to have worked
itself out. Does the AF sound noisier than before? Am I imagining
that the shutter sounds clankier? Argh!!

So here's my question: now what do I do? Is it possible that tiny
grains of sand could get in there gunk up the works? My camera -
the k7 - is weatherproof. The lens - a sigma 17-70 -- makes no such
claim. I've removed the sd card, carefully inspecting and removing
with a brush any grains of sand around the door. I figure I should do
the same with the lens... but are there other steps I should be
taking?

OTOH, everything seems to be working, I had a UV filter on my lens...
and luckily - I'm guessing those gulls shoot Nikon.

Thanks, Bob.
Yes, being so involved with sand is something to be avoided, for
sure. Fortunately, it was just the camera, I left my flash at home,
and the hotshoe looks clean. So did the pop-up flash. Went over the
whole thing with a soft brush, just to be sure.

I don't think water or sand can make it past the doors on the body
 like for the sd card.
The flash is going to be difficult to clean-up.
As for the Sigma lens, I have no experience.
It's pretty hard to keep sand out of lenses.
You'll have to patiently work your way thru it.

thoughts on 100mm macro...?

2010-09-08 Thread Christine Nielsen
Greetings, all---

Today, I enabled myself with the Pentax smc FA 100mm 2.8 macro lens.
Funny thing is,  it happened kind of by accident... I thought I was
purchasing the DFA 100mm 2.8 macro (the non-WR version), but it turns
out I overlooked the missing D when I placed my order.  Whoops.

Anyway, I picked it up to use for some jewelry shots I'm doing for a
client. When I saw that it wasn't what I had in mind, I wasn't sure...
it has a kind of funky look to it, with a deeply recessed lens.   But
-- I'm really liking it so far.  The images are sharp, and the AF is
fast.  I think this could be the start of a very nice relationship...

What I wonder is this:  what am I missing out on because of my
shopping cart mix-up?  (Besides the price difference...)  I'm not sure
I understand the difference between the DFA FA designations...  Are
there other features of either lens that I should consider before I
declare this one a keeper?

Thanks,

Re: Also official - DA L 35mm f2.4

2010-09-10 Thread Christine Nielsen
I dunno, Mark... From what I've seen in my (very) limited experience,
Pentax has a non-presence at any instructional program, at least as
far as digital goes. Here in Boston, at NESOP or BU's Center for
Digital Imaging Arts, Canon/Nikon gear is pretty much required for
full-time students. It's going to take more than a budget lens to
break into that market. (It might require the opposite.) Seems to me
that Pentax has its sights set on the first-time DSLR buyers: moms
and young people who are stepping up from a ps. Hence, the colors.

monitor shopping

Looks good. According to the TFT Central database it uses a Samsung
S-PVA panel, which should be excellent. What you're mainly missing
with the more expensive models would be size and extra features (USB
connections, video input, built-in speakers, etc.)

Ah, very interesting, Doug!

It so happens my husband has a tv set-up as his monitor. He bought a
Toshiba 32RV525RZ last year -- he likes the wide screen for his work.
It's an LCD panel... though I haven't been able to figure out exactly
which type. Only a year old, but already discontinued... the new 40
model appears to have an S-PVA panel...

I had dismissed his tv/monitor out of hand, as just a dumb television,
good enough for bit-twiddling, but not for my -ahem - art. ;) Now,
I'm having a second look... Thanks for the suggestion.

 Don't overlook televisions.  I have a HP LP2475w 24 1920 x 1200 IPS monitor
for photo work and a couple of TFTs for regular work on my computers.  The
HP cost me about US$ 600 a year or so ago.  They've since replaced it with
another model (I can't remember what it is) that's about US$ 400 shipped.
They're excellent monitors with good gamut.  /Much/ better than the TFT
 monitors for photo work.

Then a few months ago I inherited a home theater PC that a friend was
trying to build and having trouble with.  I got it working and hooked it up
to my main A/V system.  It's driving a run-of-the-mill 40 LCD TV and the
colors are *awesome*.  The blacks, for example, are far deeper than even on
the HP, and the overall gamut seems to be larger.  That said, I haven't
 calibrated it yet.

But, take a look at some of the LCD TVs before settling on a $1000 monitor.
If my TV is any guide, you can get great performance for photos at much
lower price points in TVs than in computer monitors.

Re: monitor shopping

2010-10-04 Thread Christine Nielsen
Thanks, Bob. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer -- I'm
finding it quite challenging to get a grip on the many facets of color
management.

So, my intended use is also for photoshop and printing, with one
caveat: I have no desire to do my own printing (my head hurts enough
as it is). The goal is come up with a system whereby I can reliably
send out files to be printed, with minimal frustration. I am a bit
reluctant to try to future proof my decision now, especially if my
current set-up won't benefit from the DisplayPort upgrade. I figure
by the time the rest of my equipment is capable, the corresponding
monitors should be more mainstream affordable than they are now,
anyway.

But, I haven't ruled anything out yet. One thing that seems to make
sense from what I've been reading, is to go with the bundled
monitor/calibration system, which is also available for the P221...

Thanks again,

 monitor would work.
These new monitors allow setting the illumination down to a level suitable
for proofing images in Photoshop. I presently have a Samsung 2233 that is
usable at lower levels - my Dell 2207 is not.
Some of the newer notebook computers support DisplayPort. I do not know if
they support 10-bit color. In my case, I would have to purchase a new card
for my tower. With the DisplayPort, the PA241 monitor's internal 14-bit LUT
are adjusted during calibration. The P221 relies on the video card's 8-bit
 LUT.
CS4 and 5 support 10-bit monitor color output.
The Macbook Pro does have a mini DisplayPort video but does not support
10-bit color - future models may as these 10-bit monitors become more
main-stream. It still will program the monitor during calibration.
Prior to making your decision, Google each of the monitors and look for
 calibration and viewing issues.
   I hope this helps.

calibrate them at least once a month with the Xrite i1 system that Les also
 recommended.

I will also tell you a little secret - I only paid for one of them!  Dell
mucked up and sent us two, a week apart, as per my request but we were only
ever invoiced for one.  At the same time, there was a stack of people
posting on www.wirlpool.net.au  (one of my favourite sites for news on all
things geeky!) about $6000 laptops that they had ordered/received and never
paid for!  Of course, those guys weren't revealing their true identities to
anyone as Dell has staff who work on the Whirlpool site, but every so often
another one crops up, and it seems to me that Dell must be losing a
bucketload of $$$ due to their cross-communications and poor recordkeeping.
Not that I am complaining! :)

Anyways, I love my U2410s, and they were retailing at the time (about 6
months ago) for aud$799, so pretty decently priced for what they are too.
The first few batches came out of the factory with issues of a green or
red glow over certain areas of the screen, but I  have had none of that
and the complaints about them have all but disappeared now, and I believe
that Dell was replacing them free of charge anyways.  They also come with a
full calibration report out of the box, which is a nice touch.

You can read about them here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1256560

And if you go here, there are all manner of discussions about great monitors
 - these guys are all mainly gamers though, so you'll need to take only what
is relevant to your own needs when reading:
 http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/129

 Hope that helps!

 Subject: monitor shopping

 Hi all,

I've decided to quit hunching over my laptop get a real monitor, to be
properly calibrated, just like all the cool kids have.  Not only are my back
eyes killing me, but I think I would stand a better chance of getting some
images out of my hard drive and onto paper if I could get a reliable handle
 on the color management thing.

I've done some research, and though I still feel a bit out of my depth on
this topic, my initial inclination is toward a NEC P221W
 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBarA=getItemDetailQ=;
 sku=602072is=REGsi=rev#anchorToReadReviews

The price is right, and it comes well-recommended.  Anyone care to disabuse
me of this notion?  What am I missing by not going with a $1000+ model, like
a higher-end NEC, or Apple Cinema display, or Dell Ultra Sharp...?  Are
there others I should consider?  (I think we can safely leave Eizo out of
 the discussion for now...)

I'd also welcome any suggestions for other resources (online or in
print) to educate myself better on the whole topic.

 Thanks in advance,

 -c

ps:  thank you to Fernando for raising the calibration question in a recent
 thread... I have taken notes...

I'd say it's every bit as bad as was hyped. We have a solid 2 feet at least,

As I pointed out in another thread, this Amazon store sells parts for

I am sure there are others.

I also wanted to add a caution: I've never looked or tried, but before

I know that some cameras that have HDMI connectors only allow playing recorded

Finally, 2.5 years ago, I was asking for possible tethering solutions here. I

Re: Lightroom 6 pano upgrade

2015-05-13 Thread Christine Nielsen

Hi Christine!

Cool pano... I need to try that out myself soon. I also just did the LR6
upgrade... From LR 4... And had to bump up my OS to 10.10 from 10.6(ish?). I
wish I could report that everything went off without a hitch, but... I think
I'm past the worst of it now. I'm sure you'll do fine if you add RAM. What
could go wrong? ;)

I have tried the HDR feature in LR6, though, and it is very interesting. I've
been doing some architectural work for a client recently, so getting the HDR
feature in LR was a major motivator for doing the upgrade. I'm hardly a
connoisseur of HDR, but it seems to me that I'm getting very similar results in
the merge as I do when I take the -1 exposure run it through some basic
adjustments... Down on highlights, all the way up on shadows, plus a few
others. I'm going to continue to play around with it see...

I did read somewhere that using fewer files for the HDR merge (in LR) is better
than using several. Also warrants experimenting with, I think.

And Larry - I also came upon a work-around for getting past the limited
adjustment range in those HDR images: export the merged file as a tiff,
re-import into LR. Bingo, sliders are re-set, and you're off? Haven't tried it
myself, but there you go.

Finally, took care of some photography maintenance—upgraded to Lightroom 6 and
updated my firmware on the K-3, finally. All went smoothly—though I had to
call Adobe for a little download help with the laptop, and I have to say,
Adobe’s customer service absolutely sucks. I was stunned.

Anyway, I had some frames to try the pano feature; the process is easy peasy,
though my result wasn’t so good due to some sloppy shooting on my part. I
didn’t get the overlap right in a few of the middle frames, which you can see
below. This pano is a total of 6 frames—the file is humongous! It took 7
minutes to merge.

I notice a difference in speed with the upgrade, which is saying something
since I still only have four gigs of RAM, and I play iTunes in the background
while working on photos—LR 6 is a bit quicker over LR 5 with the two apps
running.

I really do need to increase my RAM, but I confess to being chicken—I’m afraid
to unplug everything to install the RAM. Always worried I wouldn’t be able to
get everything running right again. Any words of encouragement would
appreciated :-).

Later in the week I’m going to experiment with the HDR feature. Should be fun.

You can see my very imperfect pano here :-).
http://www.caguila.com/caguila/emilypanotest/content/_IMG0873-Pano_large.html

Work should be easing up soon, so it’ll be time for some PDML fun—and I’ve got
plans! :-)

Big cheers, Christine

Those iamges went through the same basic process - a little boost to
contrast, clarity, and saturation in ACR. One in Photoshop I ran macros to
switch the red and blue channels in PS and apply the PS lens correction
filter to remove the distortion. then just a quick adjustment to level the
horizon and crop if needed. For virtually automated processing - the results
were great. I am surprised at how well the camera meters - very accurate
where with the K10d I had to do a bit of adjustment with each shot.

The conversion cost $150 and was done here:

 http://www.isaacszabo.com/infrared.html

The K-01 would cost the same to convert but a Pentax DSLR would be $200. I am
toying with the idea of sending in either my K-01 or K-5, but will want to
fully test out the Nikon Compact (its a lot easier to carry...)

The other thing that has changed is when I have Library set up to show photos

OTOH, I have my camera (a K-5)set to record RAW+JPG and the Eye-Fi cards set to

Eye-Fi calls transferring to a tablet or phone Direct Mode. If you have the
card set up to transfer to either a network computer or a tablet/phone, it
defaults to the known network and only goes to direct mode if there is no known
network available. I only want the transfers to go to my iPad whether I'm in
range of my network or not, so all I have set up is the direct mode. An
alternative setup for venues outside of a studio would be to take a laptop
connected to a wireless router to an event to set up your own network and use
the eye-fi card to transfer to that. That may work better than the direct mode
to a tablet but is somewhat more cumbersome.

In direct mode, when the card goes to sleep the tablet loses the connection so
when you wake the camera/card back up you need to re-establish the connection
on the tablet. There is some adjustment to how long the card's wi-fi remains
active after the last image is transferred but that uses more from the camera
battery so it's a balancing act as to how long you want the card's wi-fi to run
vs battery life.

the card set up to transfer to either a network computer or a tablet/phone,
it defaults to the known network and only goes to direct mode if there is no
known network available. I only want the transfers to go to my iPad whether
I'm in range of my network or not, so all I have set up is the direct mode.
An alternative setup for venues outside of a studio would be to take a laptop
connected to a wireless router to an event to set up your own network and use
the eye-fi card to transfer to that. That may work better than the direct
mode to a tablet but is somewhat more cumbersome.

In direct mode, when the card goes to sleep the tablet loses the connection
so when you wake the camera/card back up you need to re-establish the
connection on the tablet. There is some adjustment to how long the card's
wi-fi remains active after the last image is transferred but that uses more
from the camera battery so it's a balancing act as to how long you want the
card's wi-fi to run vs battery life.

Uf-da...does that make any sense? HTH

Anyhooo, an interesting development, I thought. I used the pc/av

If I can get the aspect ratio issue ironed out, it could be a

flips swivels, and it has a battery pack and a car adapter.

Re: Lens repair?

Hmmm... Maybe I'll reconsider, or at least see how I like it on a different
camera... I haven't used it in a while... If it's not for me, seems like now
might be a good time to find it a new home...

I wouldn't part with the 24-90. It's one sweet lens. I've used it on my

sharp with excellent contrast and pleasing bokeh.

If I got a K-1 (which I do not plan to do), it would be my "numero uno" lens.

Lens repair?

2016-03-15 Thread Christine Nielsen
Where are we sending lenses for SDM repairs these days? Is CRIS still around?
Is there a better place (in the US)?

I have a 16-50 that gave up on me a couple years ago... So, it's time. ;)

That lens, and a handful of other items (fa 24-90, a k-7, *ist-dl, maybe a k-5,
etc) could be up for grabs in the not too distant future. Time to clean out,
momma just might get a new camera this spring!

Re: Lens repair?

2016-03-19 Thread Christine Nielsen
I inquired to Peachtree about the repair, and just got this message back:

"Thank you for inquiring with us. Sorry, we do not service the Pentax
units any longer. They are serviced at Precision Camera only. Their
number is 860-272-2100."

So... I have a call into KEH to confirm that they could do the
repair... they appear to have a flat fee of $235 for zoom lens
repair...

Re: Lens repair?

2016-03-19 Thread Christine Nielsen
Ugh. A little research into the repair of this lens has proved
discouraging... Purchased from KEH in May 2012, LN- condish, for $900.
(a good deal at the time, new versions going for close to $1200
retail, IIRC) . Now, KEH lists same lens, EX+ rating, selling for
less than half of that... and current price for new is... also about
half of what it used to be.

Selling, as-is, less repair costs... hardly seems worth it now.
Repair & keep is an option, but, it feels like throwing good money after bad...

Good news for anyone considering this lens -- the time to buy is now,
apparently.

lens repair record!

2016-04-07 Thread Christine Nielsen
Eight days ago, I shipped my 16-50 off to Precision Camera for a new
motor. Today, it arrived back on my doorstep. Along with the hood,
and front & rear caps. Everything fits as it should, and... AF
appears to be working as well. Someday, when it stops raining &
snowing, I'll take it out for the brick wall test, but, so far, so
good!

Makes me feel a little foolish for letting it sit for 18 months in
need of repair... But, I must say I was pleasantly surprised at such
quick service. Way faster than the last time I sent a lens out for
repair.

For the record - new motor, cleaned inside & out, plus 2 day return
shipping was $214..

Onward & upward!

I think I remember that -- I sent my 50-135 in around the same

come in on the slow boat from Japan.

On the bright side, at least I haven't been relying on this lens for
the last 18 months or so, so I won't miss it as much.

Greetings and Salutations:

Well, when I sent my last reply to this conversation (which didn't go
through), my 16-50 was sitting on my front porch. The brown truck
delivered it and never rang the bell. Didn't know it was out there,
because I'd sent it for repair on 8 March. Based on all of the stories
I've read, I knew that it should be a few weeks.

Mailed it via USPS Priority on 8 March 2016; it was supposed to arrive
at Precision on 10 March. They received on Friday, 11 March. Repair
was completed on 14 March. Lens arrived home on 18 March.

EXPLANATION OF REPAIRS:
Lens and associated items repair
A complete repair and return all functions to factory specs.
Complete cleaning (Internal - External) and optical system.

DESCRIPTION OF PARTS USED:
Motor
Lens PC Board A Assy

I've tested her, and she seems to be working as she should. Let's just
hope the repair lasts longer than the original factory specs did.

Cheers,

Yonnie

Re: wide angle comparison

2016-05-02 Thread Christine Nielsen
I just applied the lens profile in Lightroom to "correct" the fisheye view to
rectilinear... Nothing fancy.

For me, the takeaway was: not much gained on the wide end of ff once you get
down to extremely wide focal lengths, but you don't want fisheye & so you have
to correct distortion/crop into image. I've been shooting lots of interiors
lately, seems like doing that with 8mm could be a bit much, probably exteriors
& astral photos are more suited.

Very interesting demonstration, Christine. Thanks for sharing it.

What method of "correction" for the fisheye did you use?
This makes me look a bit differently at the Samyang 8mm fisheye (on a
full frame). I'm not usually terribly interested in fisheye lines, but
if it gets one wider (corrected)

wide angle comparison

2016-05-02 Thread Christine Nielsen
So, for all of the other visual learners out there, who don't bother
with FOV conversions & charts (The rest of you move along, lest
you be tempted to reply: DUH...)

Recently, I had the need to explore the ranges of wide angle lenses. I
have the 12-24mm for my k-5ii, but was curious how much wider I could
reasonably expect to get ...

I rented the 10-17mm pentax lens , and the D610 with a sigma 12-24 to
compare... not apples to apples, but close enough.

Here's the result...

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2FyWgglq6t8Sm9yVUFtWC1QZXM/view?usp=sharing

"Corrected" fisheye image at 10mm = ff image at 12mm. Huh! I know
it's not a completely fair comparison, but I really thought ff would
be... wider.

Still, I will not let this discovery deter me. Now that the holidays
are over, expect my order to be incoming, Messrs B!

Re: PDML: Where are you located? (Lurkers also welcome to reply.)

2016-04-16 Thread Christine Nielsen
Boston area- a hamlet to the south of that city called Hingham. I'd recommend
it but for the high real estate costs, occasional hurricanes, and ubiquitous
Dunkin Donuts.

I'm curious as to where in the world PDML people are located. A few of
you I may know (or know approximately) but this thread would be a
handy way for people to just hit "reply" and provide their
region/city/country. One practical use: It might help all of us to
know where prospective meet-ups might be scheduled when traveling,
etc.

As you may know I'm in South-Central Nebraska U.S. - near Grand Island.
