Head to panel discussion on Hank Williams. Most fascinating aspect was
contributed by Greil Marcus, who talked about a movie that fancifully
described the last show Hank played.

"Hank Williams: The Show He Never Gave", featuring the great Sneezy Waters,
from Ottawa, as Hank. Based on the play written by Maynard Collins which
toured North America from 1977 to 1993. Waters nailed the role, winning
kudos from people like Minnie Pearl and Wesley Rose for his portrayal.
Waters also recorded a fine album of Williams covers in 1981.

Jim Cuddy on Jeff and Jay

1999-03-24 Thread alnjen

From an interview this week in a local rag with Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo:

"You can get tired of rocking, it can seem forced, because it's harder to
do than stand up on stage and be melancholy. It's so much easier to sum up
the integrity of your pain than it is to channel some joy.

Let's say, two bands like Wilco and Son Volt. I love both these bands, but
I cannot watch a whole Son Volt concert. I think 'Fuck, smile, Jay. It's
not so bad. You're getting 15 thousand bucks and there are all these people
here. What could be so awful?' And so Wilco appeals to me more because
there's a much more rambunctious, detailed spirit. "

Yes, it is money from the artist, who happens to be trying to pay for a very
modest home in a run down neighborhood he just bought, who is trying to pay
bills just like the rest of us! Who does not have a steroid-inflamed record
label covering his ass and paying for whatever his desires are for any given
day.

My take as an artist, hmm.
Here you go. I am highly flattered when someone tapes my show. I like it if
they ask first. I like it if they give me a copy later. Who knows, there may
be something I could use on a release, and if I were to do so, I WOULD PAY THE
PERSON WHO TAPED ME, AND CREDIT THEM SOMEHOW.

I am not in the same position as Todd, who is much higher on the food chain
than I when it comes to touring etc. I have done many shows with him, and I am
always amazed at the size of audience, their intensity and dedication. I think
that is something I can only hope someday I will be blessed to know first
hand.

People pay to get into a show, I don't think it is fair to the artist for
someone to bootleg the hell out of their stuff later to people who missed it.
The guy did not specifically say what he was after, but I can promise you that
stuff like this eventually gets into the hands of someone who is going to make
a buck off it.

Set aside the fact that Todd and I are buds, I hate to see any musician get
screwed. Again I tell you that stuff like this ALWAYS GETS INTO THE HANDS OF
SOMEONE WHO WILL EVENTUALLY MAKE A BUCK OFF IT.

I got a letter in the mail with a check from a real nice guy in Idaho last
week. He bought my CD off my web page, and then a friend of his loved it so
much he asked for a CD bootleg. Floyd, the guy who originally bought it had e-
mailed me a couple times about some of the tunes, and could not do it. He
bought his friend a copy instead. This does not happen everyday, but it is
nice to know there are some fans out there who have consideration for all that
an artist trys to give to them.

That's my take.

How Garth Brooks Fared on Monday

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - How it went for Garth Brooks on Monday at spring
training for the San Diego Padres:

COUNTRY CAMPER: Brooks was hitless in two at-bats and made an error in
left field in the Padres' split-squad, 7-7 tie with the Chicago Cubs at
HoHoKam Park. He is 1-for-13 (.077) this spring.

HIGH NOTE: Brooks nearly had his second hit in two days, but Cubs
shortstop Jose Hernandez made a nice play behind the bag and threw out
Brooks.

ON THE RECORD: ``Thank God Mesa has only one ballpark,'' said Brooks, who
went to the wrong field in Tucson on Saturday for the Padres' previous
road game.

HoHoKam's version of the Bleacher Bums were all over Brooks. Some
examples: ``Are you the guy who sang `Achy Breaky Heart?'; ``Hey, it's
Brooke Shields''; ``Hey, Tony (Gwynn), is Garth going to beat you out?'';
and ``Hey Garth, I just bought you for $3 on my fantasy league team.''

Gaffney to record shows at Swallows Inn this weekend

1999-03-24 Thread Jeanne Berrong

Hi there,

In light of recent Dave Alvin posts with Chris Gaffney mentions, I thought
some of you might be interested in the following information:

If any of you SoCal types are brave enough to venture behind the Orange
Curtain, try to make it out to The Swallows Inn in San Juan Capistrano this
weekend, March 26 - 28, to catch Chris Gaffney and his backing band, The
Cold Hard Facts. The Swallows Inn is one of the last great little honky
tonks in Southern California and a regular stomping grounds for Chris and
the band. For this reason, it has been chosen as the site for a series of
live recordings that will be included on the re-issue of Gaffney's 1986
"Road to Indio" debut album.

Although Chris will also perform on Friday evening, the live recordings
will take place on March 27 and 28, this Saturday from 8:30 pm - 12:30
a.m., and Sunday, from 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. The Swallows Inn is located
at 31786 Camino Capistrano, off the 5 freeway, exit west on Ortega; (949)
493-3188. Admission is free, but be sure to arrive early as this place
fills up quickly when Chris is in the house.

The first-time-on-cd-reissue of "Road to Indio" is slated for a June
release on Foothill Recordings.

Back to my lurking (and living vicariously through all the SXSW reports),

 Jon Weisberger

I guess it's like arguing politics and religion - people have pre-set
opinions and discussion isn't going to change one's mind.

The financial aspect is the overwhelming point, imo. If he's looking
to get concert recordings or unreleased b-sides on cdr, without
money exchanging hands, then I'm all for it. (Most audience-
recorded boots bite in the quality range, as far as I've found.) This
also naively assumes that the person buys all the official product
once it becomes available anyway (the few boots I have are in
addition to owning entire available catalog - Lloyd Cole, the
Replacements, etc...)

I can respect the "artist's control over material" argument, but
when it comes to a decision over trading (or even buying) cdrs of
material that isn't currently available (like current Mark Eitzel shows
with new songs and no release date in sight), my fannish devotion
overwhelms that concern, and I can sleep with that burden. I'll be
at the shows, I'll buy the official record, but I want more than that.
I want cd versions of vinyl only songs from old 12" singles, I want
that live cover of a VU song, etc... In elementary terms, it's a
"what they don't know, won't hurt them" logic - not very defensible,
but I'm sticking to it.

Reading Nancy's well-written post, I still feel this way. Because the
artist wouldn't have a way of directly netting money from taped
concerts (unless they release their own concert cds), I can't see it
as money from the artist. All the Dead, Dylan, Van Morrison tapes
out there, where each concert has its own unique moments - some
people want tapes of as many shows as they can find, and there's
no way a single (or multiple) official release would satisfy the craving.
And - unless the artist AND venue have come out as tape-friendly -
I doubt someone would risk losing their MiniDisc recorder by asking
a performer for permission, so it'll remain an underground pursuit.

But within my gray moral boundaries, I'd never dub a cdr of an
official recording. That subverts the whole fan/devotee platform
from where I derive a lot of my listening pleasure. I would tape
a song or two on a mix tape, in hopes of influencing official
purchases by the recipient, however.

The artist is not making anything off this, but seriosly there are people out
there who are. Like I said, it is flattering when someone tapes a show.
Passing around a couple copies to friends is no big deal. But there has to be
a line drawn there somewhere.

also have tapes, bootleg CDs and videos for sale. Meanwhile, Todd ain't
getting any richer, these guys are. His manager can only police so much. Is
there not any dignity among fans. If they are real fans, how can they do this.
No they are not fans, they are untalented assholes out to make a buck off of
someone elses talent.

Artist get bootlegged all the time, but we have to watch out for people 24 hrs
a day to not get ripped. We can't moniter every single soul, damn. But it
sucks when we browse the internet and see our stuff being pimped out, or even
worse, go into a record store overseas to try to sell some records, only to

Posts on the Internet that traffic indiscriminately in such recordings might
be a good place, eh?

If they are real fans, how can they do this.

Good question. I've always wondered how someone who thinks that their
*want* outweighs any ethical (not to mention legal) consideration for the
artist in question can call themselves a fan.

BTW, this (which, it should be obvious, is *not* from Nancy):

the difference is that there's a contractual, legal relationship between

is mighty lame. There isn't a contract between the artist and the public
because there's a LAW that says that an artist's material belongs to the
artist until s/he assigns the right to reproduce it to someone else in a
contract. According to this argument, a company would be free to release
material as long as it DIDN'T have a contract. The technical term for this
is "ass-backwards."

There's a list of taper-friendly performers on the Web; it also
includes any conditions they set. I don't have a URL, but it's posted

"trade" and "permission" should nail it pretty quickly.

OK, here's the thing for Tennessee Public Radio listeners.

WUOT in Knoxville does not carry the Sunday Morning Edition but WNCW out

from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. That puts the V-Roys on at about 8:40 a.m.

WPLN-FM 90.3 Nashville Public Radio airs our show from 7:00 am to 9:00

The Memphis station - WKNO - also carries the show from 7:00 am to 9:00

Sorry I don't have times for places out of Tennessee and Western NC but
hopefully you can run that down in your area.

Re: Country music documentary

1999-03-24 Thread James Nelson

This might be worth checking out.
Jim N.

"Joe Cline" [EMAIL PROTECTED] 03/24 3:18 PM

CBS, TNN Combine of Documentary

.c The Associated Press

 By JIM PATTERSON

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Minutes into the 13-part ``Century of
Country''
documentary, it's clear how broad an undertaking it is to even define
country
music, much less tell its story.

``Country music is the same thing as the blues,'' Waylon Jennings
opines.

``Country music is contemporary jazz,'' singer Ray Price declares.

Harlan Howard, the great country music songwriter (``Busted,'' ``I Fall
to
Pieces''), offers this: ``Basically, it's the people's music. We really
do
deal with divorces and tragedies and so forth. And sometimes people
think
we're kind of hokey. But country music is here and it always will
be.''

Based on previews of two episodes -- one covering pioneers like Jimmie
Rodgers
and The Carter Family and the other on bluegrass and Western swing --
``Century of Country'' captures the wide scope of country music and
celebrates
it.

The documentary touches on women in country music, rockabilly,
bluegrass,
Western swing, the Grand Ole Opry and honky-tonk music. Many current
stars
are
interviewed, and the lives of greats like Hank Williams Sr., Jimmie
Rodgers
and Patsy Cline are covered.

The Nashville Network will air the first of 13 weekly one-hour segments
of
``Century of Country'' at 8 p.m. EST Wednesday (March 31). The host is
actor
James Garner and CBS newsman Bob Schieffer narrates.

``Century of Country'' marks the first collaboration between TNN and
CBS
News.
Westinghouse Electric Corp., which owns CBS, bought TNN in 1997.

``I had more fun,'' said Schieffer, host of the weekly news show ``Face
the
Nation'' on CBS. ``Maybe because it was such a break after covering
Monica
Lewinsky and Ken Starr. It was like a vacation to me.

``I really learned a lot. They have gone out and interviewed everybody
that
you ever heard of, and some that you've never heard of.''

Among the things Schieffer learned: ``Apparently Jimmie Rodgers, who
was The
Singing Brakeman, was the first person to yodel,'' he said. ``You
would
think
it came from ranches or something Western.

``But apparently he heard some Swedish guy yodel,'' Schieffer said with
a
laugh.

The series is a step forward for TNN, whose claim to be THE country
music
cable station has slipped since it started showing a new version of
``Roller
Derby'' and reruns of ``The Waltons'' and ``Dukes of Hazzard.''

But if you're looking for a critical viewpoint of country music, wait
until
the Bravo cable channel reruns the three episodes of its excellent
``Naked
Nashville.'' TNN has always been a Nashville booster rather than a
critic,
and
``Century of Country'' sidesteps anything that could dampen the party.

The shows still are a lot of fun, however. For example, it's hard to
resist
the enthusiasm of singer Marty Stuart.

``You can wear cool clothes,'' Stuart says in the opening episode,
``Celebration of Country.'' ``You can wear your hair goofy. Girls like
you.
You get applause. You get to live this nomad lifestyle. And you get
paid for
it.''

During the segment on bluegrass, 18-year-old mandolin player Chris
Thile
pays
tribute to late bluegrass founder Bill Monroe, then reveals he's
working on
combining bluegrass and classical music.

``I find there's an amazing energy in Bach that is kind of like some of
the
stuff that Bill Monroe was coming out with,'' Thile said. ``I wrote a
song
where I try to get some of that same energy with the bluegrass
background in
it -- sort of a `grassical' song.''

Ricky Skaggs tries to explain how exciting Bill Monroe and the Blue
Grass
Boys
were in their heyday.

``When they were on the stage it sounded like the Beatles were on
stage,''
Skaggs said. ``I hear these country people screaming at the top of
their
voices hearing this new music that no one had ever heard before. It was
a
new
sound, it was a new day for this music.''

Schieffer said he came into the assignment thinking he knew something
about
country music from a lifetime of listening. He saw Ernest Tubb perform
when
he
was a boy in Fort Worth, Texas, then became a fan of Willie Nelson and
Waylon
Jennings.

The assignment showed him he had much to learn.

``If you have just the vaguest interest in country music, you'll find
this
13
hours just fascinating,'' Schieffer said.

artistic control vs. bootlegging

1999-03-24 Thread Ross Whitwam

At 12:17 PM -0500 24/3/99, Jon Weisberger wrote:
From the clipped bit, it reads like he's looking for non-released
material, and wants to trade. As an artist, what's your take on
that?

If a record label released material without the consent of the artist,
wouldn't it be obvious that something rotten was going on? If so, what's
the difference here? The financial principle is an important one, but it's
not the only one; the principle of an artist's control over what material
gets into the marketplace is another one, and there's a pretty obvious
violation of it here.

But even that principle of artistic control isn't cut and dried,
I think. I guess the much used counter-example (so much so
that it's become something of a cliche) is the case of Kafka.
Is it unethical to read "The Trial" because Kafka's death-bed
wish to his publisher Max Brod was to destroy the manuscript?

And then there's the question of what is meant by "the marketplace".
If someone is simply trading tapes/CDs of Todd Snider performances,
with no cash changing hands, are those tapes/CDs in a marketplace
at all? I think it is important to reiterate here that the bulk
(perhaps even the entirety) of the pro-tape trading crowd on
this list do *not* make a single dime on any of their transactions.
The notion of sleazy bootleggers getting rich on the intellectual
property of uncompensated artists is a bit of a straw dog as it
pertains to the discussion here.

Change in ListProc digest format (fwd)

1999-03-24 Thread Laura Levy

Now a word from our fearless listma.
Sorry I didn't post this before, didn't realize it would be a big deal, I
guess.
Just getting cranky Donmeister off the hook.

Laura

--
To: UW Listproc Owners

Summary
---
Effective March 22, 1999 the UW ListProc server will change the format of
digests. The new default setting will be to send digests in MIME
(Multipurpose Internet Message Extensions) format.

The change will affect only a few people; possibly none of your list
subscribers. Only individual subscribers who have their "mail mode" set to
"digest" will see any change in what they receive.

More detail
---

Exactly what is changing?

Only the format of list digest messages will change. Currently all the
list postings are concatenated together in the body of the digest message.
To read postings you must scroll through the entire message. Taking any
action on a single message in the digest is difficult.

When digests are sent using MIME, each original posting is attached
separately to the digest message. As a result, people reading a digest can
easily see the number and subjects for the postings. They can use their
email program to act on individual messages, replying, saving or forwarding
only those of interest.

What if the new digest format presents problems for subscribers?

Subscribers using modern email client programs will probably be thankful
for the change to MIME digests. But some subscribers may wish to continue
getting digests in the old format. If they can't upgrade to a more modern
email client which handles MIME digests, they can configure their ListProc
subscription to receive digests in the old format. They'll need to use the
"set" command. ListProc will send information in response to a

help set

command, or see

Twangfest Auction

1999-03-24 Thread marie arsenault

The next Ebay?

To raise money for Twangfest (in the spirit of
all those PBS fundraisers), we're
pulling together an internet auction.

We plan to hold the auction during the first
week of May. It will be run off the Twangfest
web site. Details for that will follow.

Right now we are trolling for donations.
We already have a few very impressive
items in the vault (items autographed
by some pretty well-known artists, who
also happen to be fictional future ex-husbands
to a few P2 gals. g).

For example, the Sovines are donating
one of their snazzy tuxedo jackets (worn
on the cover of their soon to be released
cd) and a canned ham. Fear and Whiskey
are donating a limited edition FW baseball
cap designed by Kinky Friedman. Jerry Curry
is donating that hideously ugly shirt
that's been talked about so much on the
Fluff list. Bill "The Sliver" Silvers is donating one
of his purses. CK promises to give us a sweatpant
leg hat. Maybe Shane will donate a case of fluff.
Twangfest will donate one all access backstage
pass and badge (Neal?). Alex promises to buy
a round of shots for the highest bidder's favorite band.
Get the picture? We need stuff.
No item is too trivial or, well, stupid.

We'd like to auction off P2 band cd/tapes,
t-shirts, bumper stickers, general swag, etc.
We'll probably auction them off in lots of 5 or so.
If every P2 band could
donate a cd and t-shirt or whatever, it would be
a beautiful thing. The Twang Gods and Goddesses
would surely smile down upon you.

All you record labels, music stores, publications,
etc. out there, I'm sure you can find something to give us.
How about a gift certificate?

So, if anyone has anything to offer, please contact
us. Remember, we know your email addresses.
If we don't hear from you, we'll come a callin'.

This is going to be a lot of fun. We promise.
Keep an eye open for updates.

Thanks for your time and thanks for the help!

Grubbs at knitting factory

1999-03-24 Thread Kristen Rigney

Avant Twang Gang:

Caught David Grubbs solo at the Knitting Factory on Saturday night.
He played some new material including an overture of a piece
he has based on Steven Crane's The Blue Hotel. He said
Thrill Jockey is releasing it soon, though its available on Rectagle
via import. Any of the other avant twang gang heard this yet?

Overall, I thought it was a good show for David, but I think the
sound man was either deaf or insane. David had CD-R's of
drones and other electroacoustics he played with,
but they were way too far over the top of his picking.
But since I was close to the stage, i got a pretty good sense
of what he was doing on the guitar. His playing seems much sharper
now than whn I saw him in 96. His showmanship has improved as well.
But he's still my favorite twangified art geek.
