Hey there,

I'm looking to expand my CD collection and was wonderring if anyone had
some advice on the following... These'd be my first purchases for all
three artists, so I'm looking for a 'Best of' kinda thing or a defining
album.

Chet Atkins - so is "The Essential" the way to go?

Tanya Tucker - have her first two albums been released on CD? and she had
about 4 'Greatest Hits' CDs. I know enought to avoid the one dated
1990-1992, but what of the others?

Conway Twitty - Sheesh, there are 56 CDs listed at Amazon and ALL BUT 5
are Greatest Hits collections. Help. I'm assuming I'd prefer his earlier
stuff to his later stuff.

Updates and SXSW Stuff

1999-04-22 Thread Christopher M Knaus

Hey there,

Dave, who hates all things Chicago...
Yep, I've said that out here, oh, 30 or 40 times g. When I was
there, if you take away Robbie Fulks, you're not left with much (the
Wacos are fun, but face it, they're a rock band). Since then, the
fabulous Kellys -- Kessler and Hogan -- have emerged, along with
Anna Fermin, so perhaps things are getting better. Although
Chicago scores extra negative style points for Moonshine Willy and
the Handsome Family, two of the worst alt.country bands of all
time (though, I did like a couple of HF songs Mark Wyatt played for
me, and though I'm told they're quite nice people, they're not my
bag of chips live).

Bring it on, CK.

Mark snipped...
As for Jerald's note about the Statesman rating Chi-town as an
"overrated
music scene," be aware that they practice what I like to call
"opposition
journalism" so take that into account.

OK, we've got "Austin's just jealous" covered.

And the rest of this is gonna be quick and not that well developed but
perhaps I'll write more this weekend.

Remember back when Chicago was the 'new Seattle'? Urge Overkill, Liz
Phair, and The Jesus Lizard were all over the place. THAT THEN was an
over rated music scene.

THIS NOW is alot of people playing the same type of music. And due to a
bell curve some are gonna suck and some are gonna be great. And some are
gonna start out sucky and practice real hard and then get better. And
because there are alot of places to play and alot of bands you're gonna
hear just about all of that bell curve once or twice.

And as far as your specific examples go, you eliminated one from the
genre - even tho they are the 'corner stone band' on an insurgent country
label, and you dismiss another band (who loads of people like) because
they're not your 'bag of chips.' Kinda reduces the number of data points,
eh? Read Linda's concert list tomorrow - there's ALOT of stuff going on.

And are we separating press coverage from the acts themselves? Is there a
fantastic Sioux City music scene with all great original alt.country
bands and no sucky ones and there just arent enough music journalists to
cover it? Doubt it. Do folks pay attention to what it going on in Chicago
just because its a big city? Yup. What's on the list of "Cities with good
alt.country music scene's that get a large amount of press." Um, Austin,
erm, Chicago, maybe Nashville, maybe St. Louis - that's about it isnt it?

And one more thing...
Funny...I was at a real country bar out in the county on Saturday,
and remarked to a bandmate that someone like Moonshine Willy or
SCOTS would get their asses stomped if they got on stage.

Does this prove anything other than people in real country bars are mean?

What does everybody think of Rolling Stone's typically head up

lyrically and then he blew his brains out. Any alternative selections we

Wow. Do I even bother counterpointing this? Let's just say that whatever

Slone said above, consider my opinions the exact opposite. Except the
fact that Cobain blew his brains out. That is irrefutable. And really
fucking tragic, if you ask me. Obviously, Slone disagrees.

Neal Weiss

I'm with Neal on this, and there are a few conspiracy type folks who

Rock and Country HOF

Is this still true? Because Bob Wills just went into the Rock 'n' Roll

cut for the Country Music HOF. Unless the Opry's still pissed about that

Firstly, I'm doing this to change the subject line, since I thought I was
getting loads of advice on goings on in Denver.

Secondly, I was gonna add some minor comment to the Cash vs Dylan thing
but the thread is pretty much well underway.

Thirdly, if we are counting the 'early influences' category in the Rock
HOF are the folks that are in both...
Elvis
Cash
Bob Wills
Bill Monroe
Jimmie Rodgers

Criminally Underappreciated Albums

Hey there,

Well, there's a couple folks have already mentioned
Blood Oranges - Crying Tree
Mike Ireland - Learning How to Live

I'll add

Everything Frank Zappa ever released

The La's - The La's - fantastic liverpool Beatles-esque pop that
vanished. Partially because the band members were bigger assholes than
Oasis.

The Wonderstuff - Never Loved Elvis - OK more UK pop stuff. Size of a Cow
was a fantasic single and they get bonus points for backing up Vic Reeves
on a cover of Dizzy.

Clem Snide - You Were a Diamond - It just came out a few months ago, its
amazing, no one is even reviewing it.

Fig Dish - That's What Love Songs Often Do - Some Chicago writer rightly
compared their lyrics to Sinatra songs, but played over punk / pop riffs.

Rocket From the Crypt - RFTC - This is the new punk. The Offspring is on
MTV, they are not. Nuff Sed.

1999-04-13 Thread Christopher M Knaus

Hey there,

Mr. Curry...
You know, I said this at Nashville Extravaganza to the absolute horror
of Bill Silvers and Chris Knaus. Also, in an attempt to remove any last
shred of respectibility and credibility, I'll repeat it publically. The
Clash did absolutely nothing for me.

I believe my reaction at the time was to scream at the top of my lungs.
At this point, however, I'll be a little more controlled. Sandinista is
about one LP too long, and Combat Rock gets jokey, and I even bought Are
You Red-y *shudder* -- but London Calling is frigging incredible and
holds up as album length punk rock (which is mighty rare) and their two
CD greatest hits that came out about 10 yrs ago is mighty solid. Picking
the gems from some thinner albums (see Sandinista). And one of my
favorite quotes,

"The Sex Pistols were a more political band. The Clash was mostly about
hair cuts." Joe Strummer

Got me thinking, anyone know who the most popular Japanese artist in US

virtue
of being on a major label, might win this pony race.

Well, Pink Lady did have their own TV show in the late 70's. (Picture the
Donny and Marie show about 12 times worse and two episodes long). Heh.
And like I said before, I think Cibo Matto are officially american
citizens.

But if we are talking about music outside of pop and rock - I would
assume a classical or jazz artist must've come out of Japan and wow'ed
the USA. I thought of Yo Yo Ma and Toshiko Akiyoshi - but they're
Chinese. So anyone else?

Oh come one, Shonen Knife aren't stellar players, especially on their

Knife play HAPPY FUN music and are damn endearing. And they have some
FANTASIC pop songs, even if they stumble every once in a while - like all
of Let's Knife. Aaaand they put on a great live show. I swear.

Shonen Knife loves you.

And Junior, since all you like is RockaBilly stuff these days g check

CSRF - SXSW

1999-03-23 Thread Christopher M Knaus

Hey there,

Lessee... I'll try and contribute some new info here. Fluff included.

Tue:
Yes, tuesday. Started off with another cool chili party at Smiling Jim's
with Jim Roll, Anna Egge, and Beaver Nelson. All three of which did fine
acoustic sets. Anna apparently has a new CD out (or coming out) which I'm
looking forward to hearing. Left during Slim's set in order to get to...
Swollen Circus. Bit size chunks of bands playing SXSW at the aptly named
Hole in the Wall. Jim Roll backed by The Silos sounded _great_ (digging
Jim with a full band (no accordion tho - sniff)) and The Silos their own
damn selves. The Brooders, as mentioned, sounded fine fine fine. And a
bunch of folks liked the moodiness of Willard Grant Consiprancy (tho I'm
not so sure yet). Also started running into p2ers galore Barry! Linda!
Jim Cox! etc. etc. etc.
I'll never be a weasel moment number one: opening the mens room door I'm
face to face Jon Langford. I yell and point, "Hey! Jon Landford!" right
at him. There are not enough o's in smth.

Wed:
The all important from the parents place to The Austin Motel occurs. Heh.
Decided to go non-twang for the early part of the evening. Caught a
waycool indian-persian type band (1001 Nights?) that sounded great and
then Mr. Rubin's Rubinchyk's Orchestra (which I know I'm spelling wrong)
who ROCKED in an acoustic Kelzmer kind of way. Kudos to Mark for this
effort.
Back to the Hole in the Wall for Tom House. Erm. Really like Tom electric
with a band (like at NEA) alone and acoustic, not so much.
Much needed and educational stop at Whattaburger followed.

Thu:
Cherylin's BBQ. Wooo hooo! The partying begins in earnest. Great BBQ.
Foamy Pearl. And loads of p2-ers. Saw The Ex-Husbands and The Meat
Purveyors and Jim Roll and Jon Landforad and Kelly Hogan again, all of
whom were as good as usual. The first band (The Fence Cutters?) were a
very pleasant bluegrassy surprise and the swamp-rocky band that drowned
out the jets passing overhead were pretty cool too. A bit too much
Brooce all day for my taste tho g
I was involved in the cloudburst that Bill mentioned. Phooey. But managed
to make The Backsliders show that night THANKYOUVERYMUCH. And lived
through Joe Henry. Ehh.

Fri:
Bloodshot BBQ. Wo Hoo. I heart Nan. And the rest of 'em.
Free Beer. Beatle Bob. Free Beer. Sunny Day. Free Beer. Cool People.
Great sets from The Meat Purveyors, The Blacks, The Wacos (especially
with Lonesome Bob joining them) and a surprise set from The Ex-Husbands
who may be one of the finest bar bands around. Chatted a bit with Hayseed
who is not only a kick ass singer but also a hell of a nice guy. Schmooze
schmooze. Drink Drink.
Not enough dinner and then hightailed it to The Broken Spoke to see
Hillbilly IDOL who played a fine, tight set to a small crowd.
Quick, back to the Twangmobile to catch The Hicks! From Nashville! WHO
SUCK. Luckily they were followed by Slobberbone (who Jamie and Kari kinda
like). Last time I saw them they were kinda 'eh - but a fine set was
played tonight (no acoustic stuff tho).
And now, the moment you've all been waiting for...
PUMPSKULLY
Lynryd Skynryd meets Lynryd Skynryd. Kick ass swamp rock that even Jeff
Wall would love. (doing the devil horn heavy metal handshake) They'll be
huge - you heard it here first. Well, you heard it from Tracy first, but
you heard it here second.
The hotel party then began and I wisely decided to pass out before
everyone showed up and The BROX, Slobberbone and Splitlip Rayfield
started jamming in the parking lot. I'm such a drunk dork. Grr... I was
overserved.

Sat:
Um, I kinda missed Saturday. Spent most of the day in bed bargaining with
God. Rallied to see Kelly Willis - which we couldnt get in.
Rallied to see The BROX and Robbie Fulks and The Meat Puppets - which we
couldn't get in.
Rallied to see The Bloodshot Showcase - which we made. Yeah. You all know
the Bloodshot Bands and they were all great. Crossed the street to see
the The Sadies. Man do they exude coolness. Fantastic stuff surfy rocky
twangy bluegrassy and Neko Case jumping on stage. The best band in Canada
g

Sun:
Breakfast. Sunny Day. Neal Weiss will only come to Twangfest if he gets a
badge. Really crowded airport. Back to Chicago.

My one regret (other than the miserable hangover) is I didnt get to as
many new (to me) bands as I wanted to - as Alex mentioned "We might as
well be in Chicago" but if my biggest problem is deciding which of 3
great bands I want to see - I'll deal with it.

Once again, everyone on P2 is cool. Even Don.

And somewhere in Austin there is a rental car with a Miles of Music and
an Ex-Husbands bumper sticker on it. Heh.

list. It has also covered such meaningless fluff topics like uses for
Marshmallow Fluff, professional and college sports, everything that has
ever happened to Deb, more about Jerry than you ever wanted to know, what
Nashville women are goddesses and how to stop them.

So basically, its a place to go for nonsense, as well as useful stuff
like 'who is meeting where, when' for various get togethers.

To get on go to...

and look for the Fluff logo.

Caution - it tends to explode on Friday afternoons for some reason.

Steve 'n' Del 'n' Em

1999-03-08 Thread Christopher M Knaus

Hey there,

It doesn't look like anyone has brought up the Steve Earle and Del
McCoury Band shows at The Station Inn, so here we go...

The set up, which I assume will be the same for the whole tour was...
1. Steve and the band w/o Del
2. Del and the band w/o Steve
3. intermission
4. Just Steve
5. Everybody

The tunes...
Steve and the band w/o Del played songs from The Mountain as you would
expect.
Del and the band w/o Steve played songs from Family as you would also
expect.
Steve solo acoustic played his more Moodier songs (as you might expect)
and varied the set a bit each night. The moodier stuff like Valentine's
Day and Ellis Unit One sounded great and on some nights he also played
some old Texas blues (lightning hopkins, and such). He also was rather
talkative. This might be due to the small size of the venue - but he lead
almost every song with a story about its origin, or subject matter, or
whatever - well cool.
Also very cool was for the final set with everyone - bluegrass makeovers
of Earle tunes like Train a Comin, Copperhead Road, etc. etc. Maybe its
not bluegrass anymore, but it sure sounds good.

Stuff to make you jealous...
Joining the band on stage at various points - Iris Dement, Emmylou
Harris.

The crowd...
An interesting mix of bluegrass fans, Earle fans and eclectic folks like
P2-ers g. So you had drunk bikers screaming for Guitar Town, Copperhead
Road and in one very drunk case Guitar Road. As well as an older guy
behind me mumbling "Where's John Hurt when you need him" during one of
Steve Earle's Texas Blues numbers. It'll be interesting to see how the
crowd works out at say, The Vic in Chicago, or the show Shane mentioned
being promoted on the classic rock station.
Oh, and since it was nashville the crowd also included John Prine, Mac
Wiseman, Joy Lynn White, etc. etc.

So go see the tour.

Hey there,

Dina 'Gundy' Gunderson

OK, OK, finally I just have to ask "WHY?!!!" I just don't get it. Why
do
people love for country or alt.country bands or so-called alt.country
bands
to do covers of godawful cheesy rock songs? Why do people respond to
these
more than they do to the, OK, I'm going to say it, "real" songs?

a bunch of replies and then Jamie...
Yeah, I'll testify. Here's my deal, Dina--usually I don't like it much
when
a band covers a cheesy song. I'm thinking of that awful disco thing
that Cake covered a couple years back, for instance..."I Will Survive",
was
it? Anyhow, to me, the difference is, Robbie made "Jet" sound like the
best damn song ever written when he played it. (And that takes some
doing. g)
I think it was his sheer enthusiasm.

Well, agreeing with all the 'it sounds good' and 'its fun' posts one more
thing.

Ive heard both Cake and Robbie introduce old covers by explicitly stating
something along the lines of 'I think this is a really good song' Cake
even went so far as to say 'we're not doing this ironically.'

So I think, contrary to Jamie's point, that there are songs that can be
removed from their original context (read: Disco) to highlight the
lyrical and/or simple melody of the tune. Enough to make you go "Hey,
Dancing Queen is a pretty cool tune." I'd put John Wesley Harding's cover
of Like A Prayer in this pile as well.

One more thing.

allowed him to understand country music. He demonstrated by singing a
standard (ferget which now) in an AMAZINGLY overdone country hick accent.

Silos

1999-02-21 Thread Christopher M Knaus

Hey there,

Saw the Silos last night - mostly because it didnt dawn on me that Dave
Alvin might sell out, which I has to drive a half hour to find out.
Idiot. Anyway, got to the show after The Mary Janes (sorry Linda) but in
time for Susan Volez - the violinist from, at one point, Poi Dog. She
also had gotten into that dance groove thing with a string section,
thumping bass and two back up (and in front) singers. Some fine stuff if
your into that mellower funk stuff. And the bass was cranked at my rib
cage's resonance frequency. Yow.

The Silos (none of whom I recognized other than Walter) then took the
stage. Given the loops on Heater, I wondered if he was also going to, um,
funk it up. But he didnt. Damn loud tho. Same deal with the bass so I
think it was the sound man cranking it up. Anyroad, I've seen better
Silos shows - it was like he never really got into a groove or took off.
Some great songs, over half from the new CD and his 'hits' for encores
(Sheila, I'm Over You, a slower Lets Get Some Drugs and Drive Around (or
whatever its called)). One of the Mary Janes, whose name I do not recall,
joined him for a number of duets including You're The Only Story I Tell -
which was great. But, like I was saying, I've seen him 'click' and put on
fantasic shows - this was 'merely' good.

1999-02-19 Thread Christopher M Knaus

Hey there,

Hanspeter responds:
But, Christopher, Hank Williams' work has a greater influence on many
alt.country artists from Rank File to The Waco Brothers than on
Garth Brooks.HP

Well, if influence means "We like Hank because he drank alot, died young
and wrote songs that are fun to play alot louder and faster than he did."
Maybe. And I think there's a straighter line between "Low Places" and
"Honky Tonkin" than there is between the Wacos cover of the same song.

Also, on another tack, if an artist influences alt.country bands, that
does not necessarily make them an alt.country artist. Your point seems to
tread closely to "country" being defined as "the mainstream stuff I do
not like" and "alt.country" being defined as "everything I do like." This
is dangerous. Maybe I've been reading too many of Weisberger's posts. g

If asked to divide acts into alt.country and country buckets (much to the
chagrin of Cheryl) I would place Hank in the lattter based on popularity,
style, and marketing agenda.

The first alt.country artist was, of course, Emmett Miller g.

Apparently the anticipation of having Purcell open for them on Fri. did

Re: Damnations NY

1999-02-18 Thread Christopher M Knaus

Hey there,

Smilin Jim answers Todd
Todd Larson [EMAIL PROTECTED] asked of the Damnations TX:
Ah, home..anyone know where in New York they're from?

They’re from Cobleskill, up near Albany, although I had heard they
used to live in Binghamton.

I'll provide verification of that - was chatting with 'em before their
show at Stubbs w/ Kelly Willis thanksgiving of 97. Was delighted to find
out they spent some time in my hometown. Binghamton, that is. I'm
actually from Endwell, but that's right across the river. You see there's
the triple cities of Binghamton, Endicott and Johnson City and Endwell is
sorta part of Endicott - right next to it, but the mailing address is
Endwell even though I went to Union Endicott High School, and, erm, where
was I?

Oh yeah, there's from around Albany.

Hey there,

Linda post scripts...
np. The Mary Janes. All of you must get this record. Must. Except
for Jon who can sell his back if he wants. I can't remember ever being
so
bowled over by a first record. I must say the first time I saw the
band, maybe 3
years ago, now, at Schubas, they were a mess.

Um, I saw em at Schuba's 3 months ago (w/ Jim Roll and The Damnations TX)
and although they werent a mess, there were not above average.

NEA (Middle sized and fluffy)

1999-02-16 Thread Christopher M Knaus

Hey there,

OK, my turn.

Thurs.
Arrived, surprisingly, right on time in Nashville to be greeted by Meshel
and Bill. Both of whom I was glad to see, although one more than the
other. Heh. Back to the Goddess house to change out of Business Casual
and into Casual Casual. (This sounds alot like Bill's post, eh?) BBQ with
the surprisingly large and affectionate Boston crew (Morgan, his pals,
Tom Stooley who knows every damn alt.country song ever, etc.) At Magge
Maggies (that's the name, Bill) 5 Bucks cancelled and, erm, another band
who I wanted to see, but whose name escapes me cancelled.
Ray Wylie Hubbard was OK, but I dont get into the 'guy with acoustic
guitar' thing too much. And I had heard most of his stories and jokes
from p2 posts. But the tunes were good. Roy Kasten snuck in, only to be
reduced to tears by Marie's constant criticism of the length and
geographical nature of his music. (Inna Gadda Davida, Stairway to Heaven,
Tennesse River Waits for You). I've already praised Pumpskully. Caught
Chris Knight next door, but by that point I had been up for many many
hours and drunk for many hours, so I sorta pulled an Alex. I was resting
my eyes, I swear.

Fri.
Slept late. Took a nap. Rough day.
Rebecca and her husband arrive to much rejoicing. Off to The Sutler for
the Checkered Past showcase, and really bad waitress service. Until Alex
did Tequila shots with the table attendant. Oh yeah, Alex started
stopping drinking again on monday. The man has the will power of John
Belushi. Erin arrived as well at this point wearing really scary
motorcycle boots. Tom House was excellent - much more electric than I
remember his CD being. Folk music needs electricity. Paul Burch also
sounded great (although he might want to spit out the gum.) As did
Lonesome Bob (with Tim Carrol and Allison Moorer *sigh*). We all split
before Tommy Womack to see 1R1R at The Station Inn. We waited in line
outside and then muscled out way through the crowd to the front by the
stage. I had to shove some waif-ish chick in a ginham dress (she had some
gross fish-like name, Gill?) out of the way for a descent view of Marks
gold accordion of love. Erin spilled her beer on some unkempt guy who
mumbled something about being 'not that well yet' or something. Lotsa
Nudie Suits in the crowd too - I think the opry rehearsal musta got out
early. Where was I, oh yeah, 1r1r played their usual great set. Including
Cool Water (which BTW is not called 'that funny water song'

Sat.
Spent the moring food shopping with Meshel. It was bliss.
Yet another kick ass Goddess House party. Marcia even showed up. For a
while. Excellent chili by Jim, slaw by Marcia, potato salad by Erin and
catfish by Meshel. One of these times the weather will actually cooperate
and we'll be able to hang out and have music outside. The ExHusbands,
Hayseed, 1R1R, and an Ex Husbands 1R1R combo (The Ex Rangers?) played
kick ass living room acoustic sets. Although Jerry and Bill prattling on
about pop music drowned out most of Hayseed's set. Met Jeff Weiss and his
better half face to face (apparently I'm MoM's number one customer or
something). Apparently there were a bunch of other list folks there who I
never got a chance to talk to - my apologies (I'm sure you all bummed
about not meeting me - heh). Being a really annoying anal type guy
(clapping the back of one hand against the other) I chased everyone out
in time to catch Hillbilly Idol at Roberts. More fine fine fine music
from a p2 band (I'll be sure to play it on my radio show Al g) Since I
see Jim Roll every time he comes through chicago - I went across the
street to see The Gypsy Mechanics (Morgans band). Looking dapper in suits
(for the first song or so) They played some excellent poppy alt country.
Morgan also knew everyone in the crowd (not just p2 but also their 'moms'
from The Best Western). He's movin got Nashville, I hear. (THIS IS GREAT!
I LOVE IT HERE!) Fantasic Clash encore of Should I Stay or Should I Go.
Ended the night with a slow calzone, an infomercial and a terrible
coconut flavored drink.

Sun.
Got up
Ate
Flew back to Chicago

Re: Elvis query

1999-02-14 Thread Christopher M Knaus

Hey there,

Junior asks...
Can some explain to me what the initials "TCB" mean with regard to
Elvis?

I'm asking about a sort of insignia with a lightning bolt in the
middle and the letters TCB above it.

Great googly moogly Junior. I'm sure by now I'm adding to the flood of
replies, but the logo stands for Taking Care of Business with a Flash.
(thats the lightning bolt - flash - geddit?) At Graceland you can buy a
cool T shirt with a long dictionary type definition on the back, as well
as replicas of the necklace and charm he used to give friends, family,
etc. etc.

I could toss in an Elvis joke here, but I wont.

Hey there,

Shane...
Ack!

Dolly Parton and Don Williams are the subject of derision in the
United Kingdom?!

Um, in case you haven't noticed, Dolly and Don are the subject of
derision in the United _States_.

When I was working outside Manchester in 91 and 92 I did notice, both in
print, on TV and in real life groups of working to middle class folks who
got way into US country music as well a the whole cowboy and rodeo thing.
From what I've been reading on this list for the past few years it sounds
like this was no passing fad.

I always thought it was kind of an odd hobby to have in the UK - more odd
due to the cowboy side than the music side. Very few doggies in Cheshire.
