Re: D 'n' C
I prefer Kevn Kinney solo to D 'n' C -- in fact I haven't seen the band in a while. But Kevn's got some great solo songs -- some that he does with the band. My current favorite is "Highway 316 revisited." 316 is the hwy. between Atlanta and Athens and Kevn' did a great Dylan parody for a benefit album last year. Sorry, I'm no help. I just go see the solo shows. One here next week. Deb

Re: Dashboard Saviors
They're from Athens. Many of the members still living here. As a band -- I don't believe they are an active entity but with Athens bands you never know. I don't know how many releases but I can find out. Two current members are active with other projects -- Todd McBride has an album out called Sketchy on a European label (which currently escapes me) and Rob Veal is currently recording for a release on Kelly Keneipp's new label here in Athens. In the fairly recent past, the band has backed Marlee Macleod from time to time when she's played Athens (her latest CD features their song "Just Like Geronimo") but it's probably been at least a year or so. Todd had a pretty successful tour of Europe (as did DS earlier) so there could be some things happening over there that I'm not aware of. Todd's current band that he's playing out with is House of Gamblers (no other DS members in it) but they sound great. I think Rob's CD will be solo -- he's an amazing songwriter. I saw him do a solo night which was incredible (incidentally -- his wife won the autographed Lucinda Williams guitar that the label or someone was giving away). I've also seen Rob play with a local band called Little Oconee but don't know if that's a continuing project. This town has too many one-off bands but lots of talent. Deb Sommer

Re: Bramletts
Oh, one of the things I remember reading about Bonnie was that she had worked as a backup singer for Ike and Tina Turner -- an Ikette -- wearing a wig and blackface. She also punched Elvis Costello in a bar somewhere in Ohio for calling Ray Charles a blind ignorant nigger. I think she's boss. Deb

Yes, the man could play the guitar but most of his imitators which are legion, can not. The Beach Boys define crappy, and I mean crappy pop music. Bland, soulless bullshit. Why every rock critic seems to adore Pet Sounds is beyond me. I read often that it is a groundbreaking, ahead of its time album. For a real groundbreaking record, released in the same year, try Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart. Different strokes for different folks. I won't give up Hendrix just because he spawned the wankers -- not his fault. And I still refuse to give up Brian Wilson -- you can have the other boys. And try listening to the Smile sessions.
Re: The Eradication Game (Re: Grammyszzzzzzzzz....)
Sorry, I will not give up Brian Wilson!! He can't help it that Mike Love is such a geek g And, I think I want to keep Jimi too. I still get goosebumps on holidays when I blast his Star Spangled Banner and shoot illegal fireworks off the porch while my neighbors are blaring Skynyrd and torching some elaborate whistling dixie fireworks contraption while the $5 dollar hookers down on the street run for cover cause they know the firetrucks and law are coming soon. Re: cheap rental cars for SXSW?
I rent a lot for work travel but haven't much for personal travel so for personal -- I don't know what's cheap (I get a govt. discount for work). I did notice that my Amex statement this month included $20 off coupons from both Budget and National. If you used a travel agent or even one of the online travel bookers they usually know the deals. For work lately, I've been renting from Alamo and Dollar -- decent cars and now that gas is so cheap they've had some good unlimited miles deals -- though in Austin miles isn't going to be the seller. I would advise that folks renting cars -- try to get them right away. I think it was 1995 when I rented at the last minute in SXSW and there wasn't a car to be found and definitely not a cheap one. I lucked out and got a car -- a sporty premium model and it cost me a fortune. I guess I've driven the last few years and hauled folks around -- this year I'm just going to take my chances. Last year staying downtown, it was easier to walk or cab it than look for a parking place. Good luck car renters, Deb

Thanks Tom, I've got the Buffett sites in South Alabama, Nashville (remember that song about payin' the mini-mart back) and Key West. Don't think we'll make it to the panhandle this time but you just reminded me of Tom T. Hall and Sopchoppy. Thanks, Deb
Re: Florida music landmarks and musicians
It's weird -- I've read the same things about Gram's place -- "styled on Amsterdam . . ." I don't think we're going to stay there because we don't have reservations but they were more than happy to let us look around and see any Gram memorabilia they have. I also got some weird vibes. I'm not anti- gay either. Maybe it's a nudist bed breakfast with hash g Anyway, I'll be with a big burly guy just relocated from San Francisco so I'm not afraid of anything. Thanks for your take though, Deb
Florida music landmarks and musicians
I'm heading to North Florida and perhaps central Florida for work on my book for a four day stint this weekend. I know there aren't a lot of southerners on this list but there are a lot of very knowledgeable folks. I've got a list of sites and stuff to look for but thought others here might have recommendations. I've got things related to Gram Parsons, Gamble Rogers, Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynrd, Jim Morrison, Jim Stafford and that's all I can think of without consulting my list. And you all know I have a really bad memory so . . . I'd welcome any Florida sites, Florida musicians past or present (we're not including South Florida) so anything Tampa north. Has anyone ever stayed at Gram's Place? The BB in Tampa that's supposed to have Gram Parson's memorabilia, etc? I appreciate any tips. Thanks, Deb

In a message dated 1/26/99 1:22:31 AM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I'm sure that's all true. But I was thinking, too, that it was more than just the pickiness and accepted standards of writers and editors at play here. I was thinking it was, you know, like, the law. . . . I'm guessing there's a difference in copyright law/requirents, although I don't think that makes much sense. I think it's more likely the application of the standard or the application of the law -- because a copyright is a copyright regardless of what the format of the item copyrighted is. Remember old 45's -- I remember as a kid not knowing what the name in parentheses under the performers name meant. It was the writer of the song. So at some time in music history there may have been a standard. I know this is minutia to some but I guess I find it pretty interesting. And one would think with Nashville being a "songwriters" town, that there of all places, credit would be given. But then again, didn't this start with Hazeldine? I don't have their CD or even know what label it's on -- I still think that smaller labels might not be following proper protocol but no one's called them on it. Then again maybe they have been called and we don't know. But I agree with whoever, it annoys the hell out of me when someone covers a song on a CD and doesn't properly credit it. You know -- BMI and ASCAP might be the place to clear this up. I'm too tired to go web surfing -- Curry -- that's your assignment for tomorrow g Deb I'll probably be digging into copyright tomorrow night in my studies -- but it will deal more with electronic documents g

Re: More News that Stinks/NPR
Shane and others, The same thing happened last spring with the public radio station in Athens. They gutted the staff (mostly news and local programming folks) and now the station is no different than any NPR station you'd pick up anywhere. One thing they did keep (which isn't local but at least regional) is "Mountain Stage" out of Charleston, WV and it's paid for by R.E.M. LLC A good friend of mine, David, was the news director and probably early 40's -- decided he couldn't handle starting over or going to another public radio station which might take the same direction (seems to be a trend). He took a pay cut but kept a job with the University to hang onto his retirement -- he's a public information officer but make up the difference bartending three nights a week. He said he wouldn't have even had a chance at a bartending job but the owner gave him a chance with no experience because he might draw a different type of crowd into the bar. And that he has -- giving us one more semi-adult but cool hangout. I admit I haven't paid a lot of attention to all the national news about funding public radio and tv. Yeah, I write my checks but I haven't been vocal in what I'd like. I guess I will in the future. Deb
