That said I know of a few other programs that support it. Tex-Edit a
shareware Text Processor, like SimpleText except that it can open large
files. Eudora an Email program, ircle an IRC client, ICQ an instant messaging
program, AOL Instant Messenger {AIM}, and WordPerfect an older and now free
word processor.

Hi all just got a 170 in the mail and it is in perfect condition nice screen etc: i want to put this in the baby's bed room as a story teller for when she goe's to sleep on a night. One last try: PB 170 online
Okay, I know I'm being very naggy over this, but I really want to get eudora up and running on my PB 170. I went into my mac terminal folder and plugged into a phone line and pretended I was connecting for a fax. The computer made all kinds of Modem type noises and then the nice robot lady operator came on and I could hear what she was saying, so I assume I have some kind of modem. Now, bare in mind that I am computer illiterate, but does this mean I have some kind of modem good for connecting for the purposes of Eudora, or is there a such thing as a fax only modem that I can't use for anything else. I am asking this because I have set up Mac TCP and PPP to the fullest extent of my abilities but the Open button in configure PPP always stays greyed out. If anyone has any suggestions at all on what I might be forgetting then feel free to make them. Thanks. I use happily Eudora 3 on a PowerBook 100 with 8 MB RAM and a 180 with 10 MB. I prefer Eudora 3 (which , however, is not a free download) because of the personalities feature. PB 170 again
Hey, I was wondering if there is any way that I can make my 170 send or recieve stuff from my pentium 166 or my girlfriends pentium 3. Also, does anyone know of a place where I can get any legal copies of claris works and BBedit? As well, I have a copy of virtual memory on my PB. However, it is described as a disk copy image file and when I click on it, it tells me to insert a disk. When I insert the disk, it tells me it cannot use a disk. Anyone know what's wrong here? My 170 only has 4MB of RAM and is still running system 7.0.1 (until I get the time to put all 19 disks of system 7.5.3 on it). I use Eudora 1.4.3 on my PowerBook 170, and it works very well. I have the full 8MB of RAM, but I don't think that makes much of a difference with an application as small as Eudora. By the way, I think you might want to stick with 7.0.1 or 7.1 on the PB170. System 7.5.3 takes up a lot more memory and disk space. Will PB 150 top plastics work on PB 170?
I've got a PB 170 here that has been dropped a few times, and so has breaks in the plastic around the keyboard, bottom of screen hinges, etc. I also have a PB 150 here that seemingly has a dead board...no chime, nada. The differences for the 100 series plastic, except the 100, which is a whole different thing are: the back of the book: the 150 has way less ports, but you can manage to cut the plastic. the screen has various size (from (8 to 10), so the frame must be choosen accordingly. The 150 bottom plastic is slightly different because it has to accommodate an IDE HD and a whole different logic board, but it can be managed easisly to fit a 170 in it. I have all of the 19 disks for system 7.5.3 now. So, do I just put them into the computer and open them and go ahead? Or is there something else I have to do first? I am currently running system 7.0.1. Also, is it possible to get RAM charger for free somewhere online? I think it could really help my poor computer deal with it's four MB of RAM. And speaking of RAM is there some kind of special RAM I would have to get for my powerbook (different than PC RAM I mean) to get it up to 8MBs. I live in the least MAC friendly city in the world (St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada). I haven't found one MAC certified dealer here at all, no second hand stores selling MACs, and my powerbook is probably one of the only MACs in the whole city (there can't be more than 100). So anything that can't be bought from PC dealers or downloaded off the net is pretty much out of my range. Thanks for any help. Hi Colin, The PowerBook 170 uses a proprietary RAM module (4mb) made specifically for that series. As someone else suggested, your best bet is to join the LEM-swap list, and see if anyone has an extra for sale. Do you have the Service Manual yet for the 170? Okay, here's the thing. I emailed this message already, and got one response sent directly to me. However, I just found out that hotmail was sending almost all the messages from this list into my junk mail and that every reply before a couple of days ago was deleted. Dear Colin, System 7.5.3 and system 7.5.5 both recognize DOS disks, that would make things a bit more simple (transfer of files) but in the meanwhile you could use Transmac. You need Stuffit 4 first, with which you will be able to unstuff version 5. My experience is that with both versions 4 and 5 you will be able to decompress or unstuff :-) all the files that can be downloaded on the net. I can send you a little freeware utility with which a Win or Dos user can make a Mac disk On that disk you will find (put the disk in your powerbook!) version 4 of the Stuffit Expander (Maybe this sounds complicated and I guess I'm jumping a few steps :-) but the utility I can send you is a 'MakeDisk' program. It not only creates a Mac disk, but it puts a couple of programs for the Mac on it). I will also send you the free stuffit 5, which you can unstuff with the version 4 that has been installed on your PB. Then you will have to transfer the files you downloaded from the net to Mac compatible disks with Transmac. If you found the programs files I mentioned in this mail, no problem. If you didn't, contact me off-list and I will send them to you. They are all freeware anyway. You could also consider upgrading to System 7.5.3 and to 7.5.5. Apple has made these OS's available for free! You can download them at their server, create the 19 disks with your PC and install everything on your powerbook. I can help you with this operation, since I did it myself a couple of weeks ago on my Powerbook Duo 230. On the other hand, you should first figure out out if 7.5.5 runs on a 170. Once you have mastered the PC--floppy--Mac thing and your 170 is up and running I suggest that you find an HD30-SCSI cable to connect you PB to an external SCSI HD. Then with Access PC or similar software you can mount on the desktop any DOS formatted HD. PS. System 7.5 is fine with the 170, but 4 MB are really not enough. PB 170 with DB-15 on top of hinge
I've got that PowerBook 170 here open now. It has a DB-15 connector on the top of the left screen hinge. I couldn't get anything to work there, so I opened the PowerBook up to see what that was hooked to. There is a 3.5 or so inch square board in there sandwiched between the processor and memory card, hooked to the main board via the memory slot. The wires from the DB-15 come down to a connector that looks to have been soldered to that board, though they are how hanging loose, having broken away from where they apparently should be soldered to that board. The board has no name on it that I can see...so I have no idea where to go looking for information on who made it or what it was supposed to do (second monitor? Ethernet?). It does have notations on it a couple of places about ram, and it is adding 2 meg of ram to the computer (6 meg total showing in 'about this Macintosh' instead of 4 that shows up without that board), so I guess leaving it in as a ram card is workable. I confess, I'm still intrigued as to what else it was supposed to do, though. All information/ideas appreciated Since the DB-15 connector was used for both monitors and ethernet in those days, and since monitors might use more than six wires/connectors, would this more likely be ethernet than video? Or does the extra ram imply video? Ideas on how to identify the board, and find the software driver that would presumably be needed to get it to work...especially if it is ethernet which would not have been part of a normal system software install for a powerbook in those days). The PowerBook 170 I'm playing with also has an internal modem. Any idea what software was needed to get those to work? I vaguely recall something about an 'Express' Modem that needed additional software...but am not sure anymore what that was, if there were other types of modems in these, or where to even look. What software was needed to add PPP or whatever to those old systems (I think this had 7.01 or maybe 7.1 originally?) to get the modem to work? My PB 140, which was later converted to a PB 170, has a Supra modem clone, made in Taiwan. It was sold to me by an Apple VAR (way, way back when Value Added Resellers were in vogue ... this particular PB 140 was purchased by me at the Apple employee store near One Infinite Loop). As a couple of people have previous replied, it sounds like you have and Envisio NDA/30. The NDA/30 was a combination RAM and video card which could provide both a second display and mirroring for the PB 140 and 170. As I posted in another message, the driver is available from the Mac Driver Museum. From the sounds of it, yours has 2mb on the Envisio plus a piggybacked Apple 2mb module for a total of 6. Apparently, the Envisio board could come with 0, 2, or 4mb of memory as I have seen both of the other two versions. This memory was *not* compatible with VM or with RamDoubler, so, in your case, 6mb is it. Personally, while it is an interesting curiousity, you would be better served to remove it and install a proper 6mb module to bring the PB up to a full 8mb and the ability to use VM or RamDoubler. john Jack Countryman wrote: I've got that PowerBook 170 here open now. IIRC, the Express modem didn't come along until the 180 and the Duos. The stock modem in a 170 was a 2400 data/9600 fax modem. GlobalVillage used to make aftermarket modems like a 14.4 (GlobalVillage PowerPort Gold). Jack, Being a big fan of the PB170 (I've currently got two of 'em!), I can tell you that as far as I know, no special software was required for the internal modems to work. As part of the System 7.1 install for that model, a Control Panel simply called PowerBook Setup is present, and it allows you to decide between the Internal modem and the external Modem port on the back of the PB. Once set to Internal, the modem behaves as any external Mac modem would. That is, you can use any standard terminal software (Zmodem, Red Ryder, White Knight, Smartcom II, etc.) and simply configure it to use the Modem port. By the way, once in terminal mode with any of those programs, you can type the various Hayes-standard ATI commands to get full information displayed direct from the modem's internal ROM (try ati0 through ati9 followed by a [return] to see the various display screens, although not all of them will work with all modems). For example, ati1 displays Global Village Communications on mine, and ati4 displays V.34 [28,800 bps] Data/V.17 [14,400 bps] Fax. For dial-up Internet access, of course you need the Config PPP and Mac TCP Control Panels, or one of the free alternatives, and individual pieces of software for the vaious services. I regularly use Eudora 1.4.3 for Email, Fetch 2.1 for FTP, and NSCA Telnet 2.7b4 for telnet access. I got everything I needed to get started from a library book disk, Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh by Adam C. Engst (1994), but these items are available from a number of download sources. DB 15 connector on left hinge of PB 170?
I've got a PowerBook 170 here that I was given. I have it running, but am puzzled by an extra connector on the top of the left screen hinge. Where there would normally be a rounded piece of plastic to form the top of the end of the hinge, this has a DB-15 female connector...like those used for Apple monitors on their cpus, or on some older ethernet cards that points out to the left side of the case. Since this had no software etc. with it (we transplanted a hard drive in from another powerbook to get it going) we have no idea what that connector is supposed to be or do. I've tried a few Apple monitors...13 to 15 inch...and get nothing. So its evidently not a video out/monitor connection unless it needs software to turn it on? That seems to leave ethernet? Is anyone familiar with any add-ons for old powerbooks that put such a connector there? If so, how do I get it to work? What software is needed? What system version does it take? All ideas welcome. Well, it's definitely non-standard. There's no standard means to add expansion hardware internally. My guess would still be video since that is available, just with a different connector normally. It's going to need a monitor that works with Sync-on-Green. This would mean the Apple Hi-Res 13 color monitor or one of the 12 mono monitors. Multi-sync monitors would likely not work. This is a very unique device made for a short time by Envisio, a company which is now defunct.. I owned one for my 170.. It was a great idea which never really sold well It is a board with RAM AND video output, and requires software, which I lost over 10yrs ago.. It IS a video output jack, as you guessed, but you'll have to acquire the software to allow it to work. Best of luck in finding it.. THese are hard to find, however I did happen to pick up a couple at the last MIT Swapfest I went to. These machines shipped with a 40mb or 80mb drive originally which still got for between $10-$20. The Entire 1xx series save for the oddball 150 and the 190 which was built a couple years later, all use a 2.5 SCSI drive. These pretty much look identical to a modern notebook/ laptop drive as new laptops use an ATA 2.5 drive and they look quite similar save for the connectors which are different. I picked up a couple 2.5 SCSI drives which are about 120mb each, so if you are interested I can format one with an operating system for your machine so that you can pop it in and use it. The installation can literally be done in three minutes once you get the hang of it compared to modern laptops which can take hours...see new iBook... You will also need a Torx T-8 screwdriver as well as a Torx- T-10 version which are just two different sizes respectively. You may find that either of them will take out the four Torx screws on the bottom of the machine as these have never seemed as a defined size, but you will need the size 8 one to take out the screw on the back near all the ports. Once you have the five screws holding the top and bottom halves together, pry the back (ports on it) end apart about two inches and reach in and carefully unplug the display connector and then you can work your way around the frame to the front to separate the front half of the case which gets easier the more times the machine has been opened, just do not totally snap the connectors in doing so. The smaller one (screwdriver) usually is then used again on the inside to unscrew the bracket securing the hard drive and the floppy drive in place. Be careful when tightening or loosening the silver screws on the inside though as I found that the connections that the threads for the base that the screw goes into can break off quite easily if you tighten it too hard. Good luck with everything and e-mail me offlist if you are interested in the drive which I can format for you with OS 7.5 (free) or 7.1 for testing and evaluation unless you have a license for it. Overall the 170 and most of the 1xx series are very capable machines, just try to avoid the 150 (not looking to start a flame war) as it was quite compromised in several ways. Need battery drainer for PB 170
Hello all. I have a PB 170 with 2 okay batteries (I plan on getting a Metal Hydride). The thing is, I think I'm running into memory effect. I had a program a few years ago that would keep the battery on beyond the warning prompts. I lost the program ( I think that happened when I tried SCSI connections) and the system corrupted. Does anyone have this program or know where I can get it? WOW, thanks for your replies. I found the down loads of 7.5.0, disks 1 and 2. I also downloaded a pc to mac transfer program. It finely worked. I found disk tools and booted up. It dosent show a dard drive at all on the screen. I recall it did befor. When i finely get threw swaping disk tooles and floppy 1 back and forth, it gves me a selection of where to save it. The dard drive is not hilighted and cant be seclected. So i click save and it says there isnt enough room on disk tools to open. Your system folder (if present) is damaged and as such, you fill need to start up from a bootable system floppy. OS 7, 7.1 are the best choices though you can try 7.5.(x) if you would like. Install disk 1 will boot the machine as will the disk tools disk. Have fun with the powerbook as those 1xx machines (save for the 150) are great machines. Powerbook 170 system
I have a PB 170 that I actively use. I lost the system a while ago (became irreversably corruputed) when I tried attaching by SCSI connection. I use the File Sharing now for switching info between my laptops. Everything that you need is available from Apple's Older Software's site. Disk tools and system 7.5 and updates. Many disks though for OS 7.5. OS 7.01 is available, but I found it difficult to load. The last time I used a Powerbook 170 I was still using system 7.1, so try to bear with me. I'm not sure of the background on your PB, but it sounds like you HD was either wiped or your sytem folder was damaged. What you need to boot it up is a Disk Tools disk, which should be clearly labelled. If there system is wiped, then you may want to run the Disk Tools disk and reformat, unless of course there is still info on it that you want. Then You'll need a several disk set of the system you've decided to run on your PB. Most of it is pretty straight forward and self explanitory. Just insert the disk, boot up and follow the directions on screen. I ask because DNS can't be found was a problem I just had to fix last week with my PB 190, and that fixed my DNS problem. I don't know if you can do this or not, but I fixed MY problem by setting the PB's TCP control panel as closely as I could to the TCP/IP control panel on the Mac 7200/120 which is my main computer, and it worked. Since you used to be able to web surf, the problem isn't likely in the hardware. I'll assume here that you are using MacTCP instead of Open Transport. Occasionally, on my Mac Plus (the first web machine I had!) and my Centris 650, my MacTCP DNR file would get corrupted. Make sure you have all your MacTCP info written down first. Then, delete the MacTCP DNF file you have in the System Folder - don't worry, when you start MacTCP again it will generate a new file. Then, open MacTCP and enter the required info into the various windows of MacTCP and you should be set to go. If you are using OT, the same thing applies (yes, there is a MacTCP DNR file generated by OT as well). You might try deleting the preferences for MacTCP or OT as well. Hope this helps ... It may be silly to mention it, but have you made sure that both AppleTalk and TCP/IP are set via the control panels to the method/port you're using? Internet on PB 170
Hello Powerbook users. I have a PB 170 that I'm trying to connect to the internet. I'm able to get to get the internet connection using FreePPP. There's every indication that the computer is hooked up. However, when I try Internet Explorer 2 or Netscape, I get a note that URL or DNS can't be found. I used to be able to connect. Could it be the system software? I used system 7.5.5 downloaded from Apple's site. Any other thoughts, anyone run into this problem before? But it is. I forgot the manufacturer, but I have one sitting out in my shop. I don't feel like taking it apart to find out but it is third party and Apple never made such an upgrade. As I recall, it also added more memory while making virtual memory not work. To put it this way, the port and clutch cover looked too good and normal be non-OEM. It sounds like a 170 upgraded with an Envisio Notebook Display Adapter (NDA/30). The NDA/30 was an early add-on for the 140/170 which replaced the expansion memory card with a card containing a video board and memory. The associated control panel would allow either video mirroring or dual display. One downside, though, the NDA/30 was not compatible with virtual memory or RAM Double, so no memory beyond what was the 2mb on the motherboard and what was installed on the card. FWIW, I *think* I have a spare 2mb version running around here somewhere. PowerBook 170 screen issue
Hi guys, I have a PB 170 with a screen problem. When I power up everything is looking good but as time goes on the 4 corners of the screen darken. Eventually you can't see the apple menu and the darkness just continues to creep in taking over more of the screen. Has anyone come across this before? Any ideas where to start or is it a throw away? Usually, that's the result of the connector cable being cripped or not making good contact. Pull the top plastics and check the cable. I suppose it *could* be, but check the cable itself. Are there any crimps in any of the lines--the internal wires? Sometimes the connector partially disconnects when the book opens and closes, flexing it. If the cable gets pinched between the pastics that can disrupt the video signal. I've fixed the problem... I opened the main box(the bottom) and cleaned and placed the connector and everything was correct...what I tried before is just to check the part of the cable that was near of the screen. Hi, I don't know anything about wiring the connector, but perhaps you could find an adapter. I've been having good luck finding some parts on ebay. I also found this page that describes the different types of scsi connectors (the illustrations seem to be actual size on my computer, which is cool). The same adapter is used for the 140-180 powerbooks, and you can often find a powerbook for sale that includes an AC adapter for $20 or less. Powerbook 170 problem
My 6 year old was playing on my powerbook for a few minutes, and now my keyboard seems to be locked out. Every single key makes the same beep sound when pressed. I replaced the keyboard, considering the problem might be with the hardware, but the problem persists. Has anyone heard of a keyboard lockout command, or even better, the reversal of such a command? As for doing it in one operation, don't worry about that, you'll quickly see how easy it is to open it up and get inside. I think it takes me perhaps 60 seconds to open a PB1XX, most of that time spent unscrewing the back and underside screws. As you'll see the case opens like a clamshell with the pivot at the front edge, where there are a number of plastic clips. They break easily but only if you force something. Also, every PB1XX I've seen uses T-10 screws on the bottom, and a T-8 on the back. Your T-8 may get the bottom ones loose, but it's rather easy to 'strip' those heads if the screws are at all tight. T-10 drivers are usually easier to find than T-8, most auto parts stores carry T-10. The main 'trick' to opening the case is once you've removed all the screws (bottom and back), stand the 'Book on its front edge. Gently pull the back edge open until you have enough room to see the ~4cm-wide main connector ribbon cable maybe 3cm from the back edge and to the left of the lateral center (to the right when viewed from the back.) Reach in with your fingers or a some sort of tool and carefully separate the ribbon/plug (which are attached to the upper case section) from the socket in the lower case. Once those are apart, careful wiggling of the two case halves should have it all apart in a moment. The fuse is on the LB under the daughtercard, which is the raised PCB right behind the battery compartment. 4 T-8 screws hold the DC to the LB, once removed lift the DC off its connector. You'll see the fuse at location F1 ( ! : -) right behind the battery contacts. In the 170 I just opened, the fuse is marked 5A 125V with maker's mark LF and part number 459. BTW, one other technique for this repair is to simply piggyback a second fuse onto the first rather than removing the original. Just ensure the combo doesn't foul the DC's underside. Oh bugger, here comes more advice: if your PB has the usual number of broken and cracked screw bosses, pads, etc. you might want have a bottle of Ambroid ProWeld handy to fix it up. It helps greatly of course to strip the 'Book's plastics clean of parts to allow access to those broken areas not accessible with stuff in the way. I usually leave repaired parts to 'cure' overnight, but in theory one can re-install stuff within the hour. According to the TidBITS-269 article, PowerBook 100 fuses can be replaced, but on other models (140, 145, and 170), the logic boards must be exchanged and this offer is availably only through 29-Sep-95. Another Powerbooks lister sent me the service source manual with take-apart instructions and how to get to the mobo, but I haven't studied it carefully enough to see where the fuse is. My question is this: without fixing the fuse, will the PB170 boot with a fully charged battery (charged with an external charger, as Paul Nelson suggested), or is booting it an impossibility without the power adapter? I had asked for authoritative information on defective ac adapters which could cause damage to PB 1XX main logic boards. Clark Martin helpfully suggested I could fix the damage if I was willing to do a little soldering. Doing one last google search, I came across an article in a '95 TidBITS. http://www.tidbits.com/tb-issues/TidBITS-269.html Here's the salient info: The original 15-watt AC power adapters shipped with the first models of PowerBook computers have damaged a number of PowerBooks. When the tip of the plug's plastic insulation becomes chipped, inserting it into a PowerBook - even when it's not plugged into an electrical outlet - can short out the PowerBook's internal fuse. Later power adapter models have a reinforced tip that prevents this damage. Apple has announced a customer satisfaction program to replace these original power adapters and any PowerBook fuses or logic boards damaged by this problem. Only the original model M5140 power adapters, manufactured from August 1991 through September 1992, exhibit this problem, and only these will be replaced under the program. The affected adapters have Model M5140 printed on their labels, and were shipped with the PowerBook 100, 140, 145, and 170 models. In PowerBook 100s, damaged fuses can simply be replaced. Only the original model M5140 power adapters, manufactured from August 1991 through September 1992, exhibit this problem, and only these will be replaced under the program. The affected adapters have Model M5140 printed on their labels, and were shipped with the PowerBook 100, 140, 145, and 170 models. In PowerBook 100s, damaged fuses can simply be replaced. In the other models, the fuses are not replaceable and the logic boards must be exchanged. Apple will offer free out-of-warranty replacements of the fuse or logic board, as appropriate. Although Apple's official note says that only the PB100's fuse is replaceable, Clark Martin is right: if you don't mind doing a little soldering, it's not too hard to replace the fuse on the other models. You definitely don't have to replace the whole logic board. I believe Apple was just using this as an excuse to redress problems with the power connector on the logic board. While you have the thing disassembled, carefully inspect the power connector, and especially its solder connections. Resolder anything that looks suspicious, and you should be fine. PB 170 ac adapter
Help! Years ago I learned that one of the original ac adapters (for PB 140-180?) had a flaw that after it got old, it could cause a nonreplaceable fuse on the main logic board to blow, requiring, according to Apple, a logic board replacement. That ac adapter was replaced by an improved model which did not have this flaw. Studying Apple knowledge base article 16168 (the URL is too long to post...), it appears the replacement adapter is model M4662. Does anyone happen to have any authoritative info on this subject? I see there are several ac adapters that were all replaced by M4662 but I don't know, for sure, that all of them had the same problem (iirc it had something to do with a breakdown of the insulation between the positive and negative poles of the plug...). I'm in need of an ac adapter for a PB 170, many of which are available on ebay, but I don't want to buy one that's going to cause me this problem. So, lets make an example, a simple circuit if you will. Imagine an AC power supply, say supplying a 12v 2amp signal. On both power leads a diode (cathode and anode pointing in opposite directions on either pole) and a LED in parallel to the supply (hope that makes sense), anyway, if the LED is rated at a minute 50ma, it's using that full 50ma supplied by the supply even though the supply is capable of flowing 2A. So what will the diodes see, exactly, 50ma across both. Ok, lets say the diode has a 1A threshold and instead of a LED you use a 2A lamp, then the diodes will see a 2A load which after time will burn them out. So anyway, I've still made my point. Amperage pull will only be what is used, not what the battery or supply can produce. No, that's just not true. Let's simplify further, and be more relevant by talking about direct current, as that is what all computers use (except for certain parts like LCD backlights). V = IR. LEDs have a minimum breakdown current or voltage, if you will, beneath which they will not function. But if you supply a 5V emf to a simple circuit with a 20ma LED, your current is limited by the resistance of the LED (and the source of the EMF), not how much current it draws. Nothing draws current - all current is driven by voltage differences. Since you have a 5V voltage difference across the LED, the current will be I = V/R where V = 5 and R is the resistance of the component (LED). Nah, I don't buy it. If you supply an over-rated voltage to digital electronics, you have a very strong chance of burning them out. Try sticking a light bulb on a very high voltage - the bulb burns out. The current through the filament was strong enough to literally burn the filament. The same is true with an LED in series with a variable resistance resistor - turn down the resistance and the LED gets brighter. LEDs are fairly robust, though, so it takes a heck of a lot of current to burn one out. But you are wrong about them only drawing up to their nominal rating. Now in the case of direct current supplied by a battery, the current is limited by the sum of the battery's internal resistance and the resistance of the rest of the components on the circuit. This is why fuses are used in nearly all sensitive circuits - if there is a short, by your reasoning, the short draws more current, but the current is limited to whatever the lowest current draw upstream of the short is. Rather, the short creates a scenario where the resistance is significantly lowered. Any components upstream can be burned out since the current will be higher. (This is neglecting the problems associated with dumping too much current down too thin a pipe - i.e. FIRE). Try it yourself, I dare you. There are many unfortunate statements above (simple electronics specifies... is so wrong that it isn't even wrong!). Short story: There are many, many components in electronics which behave nonlinearly. Even a battery, if charged with seemingly small overvoltages, can exhibit catastrophic behaviors. A diode is a device where, if you apply a mere extra 60mV (that's 0.06 volts) or so directly across it, the current can go up by a factor of 10! It does not know what current it needs, and will happily, destructively demonstrate that truth for you. Another way to look at it: You applied nearly a 50% overvoltage. If it were a resistive load, the current would have gone up by ~1.5x, too, for a power increase to ~2x the nominal value -- that's a lot, even for a resistor. But you weren't feeding a resistor -- it's a much more complicated thing! -- Prof. Thomas H. Powerbook 170 acting funny
My oldest Powerbook, a 170 which I saved from scrap a bit back was a little toy I played with when I got bored back in the day. Pretty much everything didn't work. But after much time and effort the only things I could never get working was the battery, trackball and the space bar. So after that it sat in my room collecting dust until today when I pulled it out. Anyway, I never had a power supply for the thing so I fabricated one from a step down transformer which I normally used to give the battery a little juice which allowed me about 5-10 minutes of fiddling time. But this time I tried using a 12v car battery to power it and it worked. The OS was all screwed up so I did a fresh install of 7.5.5 and gave it a go to actually use it again. Ok, now here's the odd thing. Everything was working great until I shut it down. After I did, I could never get it started again. No bong (or death tone), no hard drive activity and the screen got these weird bright red lines across it (even though it's a 1-bit 140 monitor). It also won't even react unless I plug power to the back and put the battery in. Any idea's guys? It would really be a shame to scrap it after all this time and work, thanks. Also I have 5 extra old batteries. If the recharger or the PB can't detect them much less recharge them does that mean they're totally dead? You can use a PB180 power supply for a PB180 or less (that is any PB requiring LESS than 3.0 amps), but you cannot safely power a PB180 with a 2.0A supply. Sorry. And, DON'T toss out your dead batteries, as the cases are a hard to find item. You can order a set of 10 - 2/3A size NiMH or NiCd cells (get the tabbed kind), solder em together and rebuild your batteries. I posted complete instructions on this last year (check the archives), and I think the Pickle might have posted the same instructions on his site (THANKS Pickle!). It's very worthwhile to replace the cells in your battery packs; I've done it to 3 batteries, and they all work just like new ones (that is, they actually run my Powerbook for almost the rated time of 2 hours, with backlight on and HD running). Problems with my PB 170
My PB 170 is having problems accessing the hard drive. It'll start up and get the diskette image with a question mark. Once in a while after many start ups it will start normally and access the hard drive and OS. I dropped the PB on the carpet the other day and I figured that was the problem; that I had damaged the hard drive. Could it something else? A pram battery? Also, I just got a PB 180 from e bay the other day. I read something about not suppose to use the PB 170 AC adapter for the PB 180. Powerbook 170 Modem-what software to use
Hi all, I got a PB 170 with an internal modem second hand from a sale recently, and have been toying with it because it is fun, and it works well. I have 7.6.1 installed for System software, with RAM Doubler also installed. My question: I have a modem with a black plug for the phone jack. Is this an Apple modem or a Global Village modem? If Global Village, I assume it will take the GV software to boot properly? I've never been able to connect to the internet, but would love to for the fun of it. AL -- _ Albert L. I THINK that fuse blown will give you the symptoms described. I got a PB145b for free because it had a blown fuse. I replaced it and all was well. Hi All! A friend gave me a Powerbook 170 that won't go. I charged up and recycled the battery with a conditioner and it holds a charge, but the Mac doesn't do ANYTHING when I press the start button. There is no hard drive, but I don't think it would need one just to bring up the screen and ask for a disk. I don't have a power supply. You can HOPE for a fuse, but, from the PB170 (and others) service guide: Power Screen is blank; computer doesn't respond: 1 Press reset switch. 2 Connect power adapter and reboot computer in 3-4 minutes. 3 Try known-good, charged main battery. 4 Check all interconnect board, daughterboard, and motherboard connections. 5 Reset the power manager. 6 Replace keyboard. 7 Replace interconnect board. 8 Replace daughterboard. 9 Replace motherboard. I have an PB170 that I use all the time. I used SCSI to upload some infor. There were problems then more problems. (I think I didn't properly use SCSI termination) At one point I uploaded all my important files to my G3 desktop. Eventually, the system died and the ? came up. Although I did insert disk tools and the information was still there Later I went to Apple web site and got system 7.1. Much fussing. Inserting disks in and out. But it wouldn't load up right until I intialized the hard disk and cleaned all the info off. Not sure how this will help you out. I'm surprised 5.1 runs OK under OS 9.1. It runs fine under 9.2.2! (and in Classic as well). No problems. I found 5.0 went funny on 8.6 and 9.0. Possible '5.0' itself (i.e., not 5.1a) is problematic under 8.6/9.0. Apple and MS both said Word 5 and Excel 5 had problems running above 8.5. Never read this one. I'm a little sceptical that it's a way to get us to upgrade though. I found the Hot keys failed to work correct, though you could do a kludgy fix by reassigning the keys and some of the formatting wouldn't work. I kept a 8.5 on my old performa just to run Word and Excel 5. I always keep a full backup of my entire Preferences folder on CDRW - the Word prefs are critical as far as keeping the keyboard macros intact. Same with replacing any other pref file that gets corrupted. I have a copy of Word 5.0 on floppy disks. How/where can I get the updates to go to 5.1a? M$ had removed the upgrade files from their web site by the time I bought my copy (in 1996). I have found a lot of references on the 'net to the existence of upgrades, but I have never found the files for updating. Can anyone help? Thanks. I've built a few vital personal dictionaries over the years and just keep on using Word 5 because it gets the job done, never crashes, takes up little disk space or RAM (I give it 10MB, but its default is about 1.5MB), is compatible with newer versions of Word on the Mac and on PC; you can get a Word 97-98 and Word 2000 converter from the Microsoft web site (for free! very unlike MS) that lets you open just about any Word file others send you (which in my case is *every* file people send me for work). I've built a few vital personal dictionaries over the years and just keep on using Word 5 because it gets the job done, never crashes, takes up little disk space or RAM (I give it 10MB, but its default is about 1.5MB), is compatible with newer versions of Word on the Mac and on PC; you can get a Word 97-98 and Word 2000 converter from the Microsoft web site (for free! very unlike MS) that lets you open just about any Word file others send you (which in my case is *every* file people send me for work). And that last point is probably the key - if you have to exchange a fair number of files with other Mac and PC users, it makes things a little bit smoother. Hi, I have almost the exact same problem with my Duo 270c...I was trying to charge the battery and suddenly it stopped booting into Mac OS shortly therefater. All I get now is a happy mac, then a flashing disk icon. I tried to reset the power manager about a billion times and nothing happened. Try it without the battery. Absolutely. The exact same thing happened to my 170 after running Battery Amnesia. It ruined the battery completely. Take out the battery and run it from the power cord; I bet it will work fine. 170 won't boot: please help
my 170 is giving me trouble, intermittently - like now! - refusing to boot up. It's happened three times so far over a period of a few months. The first two times I think it might have had a bit of rough treatment (i.e. been shaken). Both these times it miraculously self-corrected, the first time after a week, the second after a day.. That made me think it must have been a slightly dodgy connection somewhere, and I suppose that's still on the list of possibilities. But which connection? This time, I had just run Battery Amnesia down to a hard crash, and it just won't come back. For a while I was getting a happy mac, then it would just drop out from there. Now it doesn't even get that far. I am getting the startup chime, and the hard drive spins up. Trying to boot up on a floppy doesn't do any better. That 170 battery rollercoaster
Hi Folks, I am in the process of reconditionong the battery on my wife's PB 170. I have deep charged and discharged it several times, as recommended. The last two times the discharge curve has almost been identical. It runs down to about 25% after only 6 minutes and then ramps back up to about 35-40% for about 5 minutes more, until finally discharging completely after about 35 minutes. While this explains why the battery goes to sleep after about 5 minutes, I wonder if this is a symptom of a bad battery or something. Has anyone else encountered such a thing?
