[QUAD-L] dog training
Does anyone have a dog for help with light switches, etc. When traveling or taking your dog to the park, what do you do if your dog poops? And you are alone. Like when I stop for gas & want to take her in the grass.Dianna

Thoughts? and Re: [QUAD-L] Pressure mapping Please don't think of me as a bad person simply because I have paid attention and observed so many things about spinal cord injury research and breakthroughs and always have to question whether it is real or not. I think it is a little bit of both. When Paul and Carolyn just posted about amazing breakthroughs... I'm sure there has been many of them but with a catch. Just like the liberal media hide things from us because they are always on the liberal side and always have been. Anyway, back when Glenn Henry made a post about pressure mapping I wrote the following (below) but then decided not to send it simply because I felt that everyone would think that I am just looking at things negatively and that, no matter what, we all have to hope for hope in the future and not give up the quest for the generation of cells for any of this to regain more movement. Christopher Reeve could have done so much more but he was so gung ho and adamant that he was going to walk 5 years after his injury that he was getting desperate. After he was unable to walk after the first 5 years went by ... do any of you remember what I wrote many many years ago regarding what he probably did out of desperation? We were all "told" that he passed away from a bed sore or a UTI or a combination of things when the hospital. If he was so bad off... what was his wife doing in California having a good time I had to ask myself. But even more importantly he looked like Christopher Reeve practically one day and the next time we saw him he looked like a 90-year-old man. That speaks volumes to me that he was letting the so-called "experts" experiment on him and it cost him losing his hair and probably his life with that research that surely did not get him to walk but into a grave. So many of us on the quad list have been injured 20, 30, 40 or more years and still do not look like 90-year-old men or women. We all might look a little bit older like everyone else does but surely not like what Christopher Reeve did practically overnight. I also agree with Steve on this (pressure mapping). Ironically, I never had any problems with "pressure" believe it or not. "Shearing" became my nemesis after having my Stage III wound over my left iscial tuberocity in 2010. Which brought me, for the first time, to use a Roho cushion. So, it took 30 years for me to have any real issues with my buttocks as, before that, I did not sit on anything but a bucket seat and a super comfortable one using my Fortress Scientific wheelchair which, of course, they do not make any more. It had a super comfortable air filled back and the same part of the bucket seat I sat on which was all air for about 4 inches. When I got my first Permobil (Chairman) I sat on a blowup waffle like cushion which was certainly no "special" cushion. There was a one time event in 2004 which gave me a Stage III wound that lasted only 6 months and then I was in tip top shape. But both Permobil chairs (the one I have now what is September 2011) came with metal bottoms (UNLIKE my Fortress Scientific) and that was the beginning of having any type of wound issues. Call me a cynic (Cynicism is an unpleasant way of saying the truth) but it wouldn't surprise me if all of this "SCI research" for a cure or to repair severed spinal cord or nerves, etc." is not doing much more than bringing in trillions of dollars that benefit a lot of able-bodied people and corporations and therefore making a lot of people very very very wealthy. With the cost of Power Rehab Chairs now costing as much as a car, the ongoing maintenance of each and every chair, the adaptations to them, "special made" cushions and with hundreds of different types of them, and so many other examples with only, overall, ending up with very very little progress toward a cure. Then all of the money corporations make from us whether it be from suppositories, wound care products, rotating air mattresses or mattresses specially made for those with an SCI, hospital beds, and the list is just endless. If you think of the extreme debt the United States of America is in, do the math and statistics of money being made off of people with Cancer & the money being made off of people with SCI individuals brings more money then we could ever explain in words. This includes: * Personnel - Neurologists and Neurosurgeons, pain medication for SCIs, wound care for individuals with SCIs, etc. etc. etc. * Supplies (everything from suppositories to tracheotomys and ventilators and everything in between) * Medications for spasticity, bladder spasms, etc. etc. etc. * Institutions * The Christopher Reeve foundation and The Miami Project doing all this resear

So I will just say ditto to Jim and Ismael even though some many of us are going through our own personal hell. I have been through the absolute worst circumstances I have ever been since my injury but the story is too long to tell and it continues every week but somehow find the strength to go on. I have been in bed for the last 3 weeks with a wound in an area that I have never had a wound before (I guess you would call it my groin area in between my upper left thigh and my upper left labia -- DEEP in the crease). I wouldn't doubt it that it has all been from stress since physicians, nurses and home health care agencies have done nothing but hurt me and caused me irrecoverable problems that continue to this day. It all began at the beginning of this year after being forced by my family to go out on my own with nowhere to go after losing my husband in June 2012, which almost killed me with that happening. My family didn't even think twice about considering putting me in a nursing home and that was not going to happen to me after living such an active life, having a wonderful United States Certified Support/Companion Dog who has been with me since my husband and I adopted her in November 2009 and has been with me through her daddy's death, my family abandoning me, and right to this day. She is the most intelligent, perceptive and intuitive dog I have ever had and never leaves my side. Between 2009 and early 2012 I was, statistically speaking, in bed 99% of the time with a wound over my left ischial tuberousity (left butt bone) . That was also originally cost from two medical "professionals." With the latter word, used very very loosely. I don't know how I keep being the victim of people doing things to me but that can't be "proven" for one reason or another but I have been time and time and time again, which cost me my first 13 year relationship. I had everything one day (with me and my husband and the wonderful life we were living and the wonderful person he was to be there for me whenever I needed him in any capacity), and it was all gone the next. That was when I first learned what stress can do. It was just 2 months or less after losing my husband and I had my first seizure, and I had never had a seizure before in my entire life. I thought it was a one time thing until they continued after a full day of stress or pain or exhaustion or all three of them together. It took me a good year and a half to find out that they are not your typical seizure but something called "Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures." Just do a Google search on those words to see a quick explanation of what they are. I sometimes get weary of the platitudes that ~life is so fragile~, but it is. Re: [QUAD-L] Cushion question
I sit in the foam/air combo which keeps me more stable. the air is only in the back. this cushion is meant for people with or has had skin breakdown. I sat in a gel for 25 yrs with no problems and like you lori, was up for the whole day and yes, I had no problems until I got my new quatrum. the rep did not adjust the cushion flush to the back which allowed my cheeks to hang over the edge of the back of the cushion. I drive and yes I sit much higher. it's strange but I got use to it. my head is very close to the door post. i'm 5'2 with short arms and sit close to the steering wheel. had to be that way so I could reach everything! Happy Birthday Lori!!! I would love to sit more "stable" as well as keeping my ischial tuberousities safe from further breakdown... especially having old battle wound on both of them. The Ride Design cushions seem to offer that. Along with breathing room down there. -Original Message- From: Lori Michaelson To: quad-list Sent: Sat, Jul 30, 2016 3:30 pm Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] Cushion question I have never had a problem with "pressure" no matter what Cushion I have used. Further, I never needed a "special" cushion until all of these rehab chairs that began to come out around 1999 came with seat plates rather than bucket seats. I digress, when I came home from rehab in 1980 in first Wheelchair [Everest and Jennings] it had a seat plate I sat up on a foam/gel cushion whereby I got a little sore on my tailbone. I did not have any problem with any wounds until they came out with these latest chairs. After my Everest and Jennings [of which I sat in for only 4 or 5 years) I had a wheelchair called a Fortress Scientific that I sat in for 14 years, 14 hours a day without shifting my weight, and it was just a very comfortable bucket seat with nothing underneath my butt except for a thick area of air which was below the seat part of the bucket seat. I never had one... single... skin breakdown over those 14 years. However, it is just another way for the people who come out with wheelchairs and cushions and all of that stuff to keep the money rolling in. Sorry to sound so cynical, but it is true. I was just encouraged [by someone on this list fairly recently] to try it since the Roho cushions have always had me weeble wobbling all over the place. I began using the Roho cushions after having a Stage III wound. I have not been able to try another kind [like the ride design cushions] but being held more stable and sitting lower to the ground. Instead of buying high-profile Roho question that always has to be "maintained" when I now do not have someone to maintain it. Except for faithful Tom Borcherding... the president of Roho. Which I can't thank him enough for! For the longest time I have been wanting to ask people on the list how they are able to see out of there van windows??? This is simply because ever since I have gotten one of the latest rehab power chairs (whether it be Permobil or Quantum which basically all sit at a high level because of the tilt features) and then have had to put a Roho Cushion on top of such a high sitting chair... I sit so high in my conversion vehicles (even with a 10 inch drop floor!) that I can't see anything except the road in front of me. I can't even see road signs. I am the passenger and no matter who my driver is... my chin is level with their forehead! Re: [QUAD-L] 50 years
Your story is inspirational!! Congrats on surviving those 50 years! I'm a quad as a result of a boating accident. I went in to the cuddy to sleep and woke up as a quad. All above were fine. We hit a breakwall at night. It was a brand new boat without a spot light yet installed. The breakwall wasn't lit either. I think I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. This being 26 years ago, boats still are still not being sold with spot lights. The breakwall is WELL lit now. I think my lawsuit and accident helped others from being hurt in the same way in that area, (well traveled/entrance to Lake Erie) due to the now lit breakwall. Maybe the lord used me for that purpose. My husband and attorney went to a boat show and was told the cuddy was completely safe while moving...well folks, it's not! it also is the crush zone. If you have loved ones whom own a pleasure boat, never let them down there while in motion. It could be something as simple as a sand bar! Dianna The Lord always put you in the right place at exactly the right time. In the 1970s and early 1980s our country had a gas crisis. One of the things jumping in popularity was the citizens band radio. This was the start of my journey into the electronics field. The Lord guided me to treat my customers with respect and honesty. I definitely followed his lead. We migrated from consumer electronics into business communications, then into the public service. In 1998, when we sold the business, we had serviced fire equipment through our mail in division to 49 States. -Original Message- From: Bryce Willis To: quad-list Sent: Fri, Jul 8, 2016 10:44 pm Subject: Fwd: [QUAD-L] 50 years Keep on chooglin' Glenn! During the Vietnam War the MASH units were advanced resulting in many soldiers returning home severely wounded with many spinal cord injuries and our government pushed research on how to better their lives. Throughout the years after 1966, many trials, tragedies, blessings and lessons were learned. The 2 ½ years I spent in Elizabethtown Hospital helped prepare me for these 50 years. This began with me probably 3-4 years after I began to work and was in the chair by 8 AM and did not lay down until 8 PM or 9 PM on weekdays. But it has gotten much worse since then and then in 1998 I had to stop wearing shoes or tennis shoes/sneakers and resort to what I spoke about above. The only thing that helps it is me laying flat with my feet straight up and down against a pillow whereby my lower extremities are equal to my heart. In other words, they go down overnight but not always. Yes, I will wear compression stockings and did so before moving to Arizona in the summer of 2001. I wore Jobst stockings for the first couple of years after moving away from the humidity of the Northeast but I eventually did not need them. When I moved back to the Northeast to be with family after losing my husband my lower extremities became worse so I thought when I moved back here they would get better but nope! Yes, I tilt back my chair several times a day because that is all I have time for and I am not up in my chair all that long anyway. Now, I do not have any heart problems or anything. it is the anacet not covered. 75 bucks per tube. don't know ounces...not home yet. Here's what I know about treating small wounds. Start by treating with Dakin's solution, you can make it yourself. It consists of 21 parts sterile water one part Clorox bleach and a pinch of baking soda. This is much cheaper than buying it and it is the actual solution. Since you already have aQUACEL, be sure that they just lay it in the world and not pack the wound. It should be very fluffy and not tightly packed. Over packing wounds delays healing and often causes more damage. Cover the wound and try to stay off it as much as possible. True Dakin's solution is 7 parts water to one part bleach with a pinch of baking soda. This is often too strong to be used at home. Medicaid won't cover it because it is easy to make. Where did the time go from that moment when I fell off the scaffolding and tried to move my arm and realized it did not respond? That was the start of my new life, and although it is not always a home run, it certainly is not a strikeout either. So many people who have helped me, encouraged me, devised a little something that made my life better, cuddled me when I needed it, scolded me when I needed it, and just simply told me to buckle down and get on with life. Thanks to each and every one and you know who you are. Family, friends, therapists, doctors, and yes many strangers. To every little kid (some of them not so little but just as curious) who asked me why I was in a wheelchair, how did I drive my chair without my hands or arms, who offered to help me, I say thank you and bless you that you accepted me for the person I am, especially the young one who wanted to race me and when I won told me to get out of my chair and he would drive it and win! I love you all. I appreciate all of the strangers who are so helpful and kind and open doors for me without my asking, offer to carry my packages out to my car, ask me if I would like a drink from my cup on my wheelchair, or would I like something to eat while I am waiting for someone at the food court to pick up our orders. I don't believe for a minute that the majority of people do not want to help or look down upon me in the wheelchair. Conversely, I love the smiles, the how are you doings, and the people who say- isn't it a great day to be outdoors or shopping or whatever. To the very few and far between people who say or imply something such as " my you really know how to use the wheelchair" I try to smile and reply " you do really well on your feet also" and make them laugh. They probably will think twice the next time. Being a total C4 quadriplegic was definitely not my game plan for my life, but honestly things could have been worse and I am looking forward to what the future holds. I have already outlived by 10 years what they told me at rehab in 1990, so hopefully the rest will be a piece of cake! Thanks for letting me celebrate 25 years.

Re: [QUAD-L] Sitting wrong/Pressure sore
I'm all to familiar with exactly what a P.T. does and an O.T. does W, unlike you, I was a patient on an SCI floor for 4 months. I haven't seen a Rehab doctor for 25 years. Medicaid will not cover the care of such a specialist after discharge. I was due for a new chair and went thru all the proper channels Medicaid will pay for. That being my Primary, a P.T. to eval the approval of a reclining chair and special seating for my scoliosis. After doing so, I then called the company who provided my prior chair. Who then sent out a sales rep to measure me for this new chair. If you read my story, it was not a seating problem. I sit in the same chair, the same cushion, all is fine now. What you missed in the story was while she was so concerned about the back, the plate under the cushion was not adjusted. "Dave" moved it three inches forward. I remember now why I lost interest in this list as did most others. And yes, I live close to Metro hospital in Cleveland that has an SCI floor but again, Medicaid doesn't cover those channels. Yes, I'm seeing a well known wound specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Dianna I hope you are working with a certified wound specialist and wound medical doctor. A wound nurse with updated training every year is a great asset. Wounds fail to heal for a number of reasons. Age, Diet, Tangible tissue, Bad Habits (smoking) and how much you lay on the wound. I was sitting out on my patio & looked in my bay window to actually look and see from the suns reflection, what my butt looked like in this chair. This was a Saturday. No. it was time for a new chair so I called the company who provided me a chair 5 years ago. SAW a PHYSICAL THERAPIST, was MEASURED for this particular chair and that was it. Thus put my faith in their reputable positions. Just who should of suggested I go to such a clinic W?? Perhaps that's exactly what she did! No, I've never heard of such a company nor directed. Dianna Did you actually go to a clinic that specialize in seating and positioning or did someone hold their thumb up to your profile? Positioning is so important, especially today. no. my cushion and back are varalite evolution, both air. it wouldn't have mattered who it was by, I was sitting off the edge of it, off the back. probably would've gotten a sore on both cheeks but I lean to the right a bit from scoliosis. she had a back on it to try and correct that with lateral support but I couldn't tolerate it. just made it worse. Was the seating system from Pride as well? When I had one, 7 years ago, the seating system was from Motion Concepts. It worked well until time to change the batteries. Then, there wasn't enough room to remove the rear battery without also removing a bunch of electronics. -Original Message- From: fragile To: diannal767 Cc: quad-list Sent: Fri, Sep 4, 2015 1:11 pm Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] Sitting wrong/Pressure sore Was the seating system from Pride as well? yes, bobbie sent me a video where her chair comes with a power headrest.(same chair) the rep said it wasn't available nor a medical necessity. that medicaid wouldn't permit it. i proceeded to tell her i couldn't unbolt it. it's a cosmetic issue, but sometimes it would be nice to take it off. or should i say, hit a button to put it down. it falls in the category of a para not wanting a power chair. but NONE of the options were discussed with me except lateral support that HAD to be changed. yes, derrick did a lot of research, it really isn't our responsibilitythey should know but we're the ones getting the chairs. in all respect, my rep said she'd come out until it's right. dianna (still need shorter legs or foot rests on mine. using dish towels to get my legs higher...not cool) Well I don't really doubt what dianna said because wheelchair companies are supposed to know when a person in your shape needs and work your insurance company will pay for it shouldn't be our job to know what we need I mean we wouldn't even know if our chairs could have certain things done to them -Original Message- From: john owens To: diannal767 Sent: Mon, Jul 6, 2015 12:56 pm Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] new chair Well I don't really doubt what dianna said because wheelchair companies are supposed to know when a person in your shape needs and work your insurance company will pay for it shouldn't be our job to know what we need I mean we wouldn't even know if our chairs could have certain things done to them On Monday, July 6, 2015 10:12 AM, "diannal...@aol.com" wrote: can't thank you enough for this info derrick. hope others might find it useful. i have a veralite icon (air) cushion and back but the jay3 would've been my next step. love the you tube videos. sent them to my rep. dianna Yes, DeeDee that would be great. yes, i got the veralite icon (air) back. it's high and only about 2 inches from my lower back to my butt. it looks like an office chair. if it didn't work, i was going to ask for the jay 3. my cushion is a veralite too. i like the backmy butt doesn't stick out either. that was not cool. dianna You try any of these? yeah, i was 33 with 2 preteens. mine asked me if i wanted to consider a hysterectomy. with my husband having a vasectomyi told him no. i later had a an ablation. what a blessing that was. something some young females might want to consider if you don't want children. no more periods!!! excuse my mis-spellings. i wouldn't blow up the baloon though any further...just my opinion. mine never fell out. dianna You could put a little more in water in the ballon to make the cath more Secure and tape the cath to your thigh if you'd like for even more security. Depends on how active you plan on getting. THE MOST Important thing to do is ... TO HAVE FUN AND LAUGH A LOT!!! FYI ~ I had a small bowl movement one time. When I asked my Physiatrist, when I was first injured at 17 and a Virgin, "Can I still have sex?" His answer, back in 1973,was "Yes, but you might get pregnant or had a bowel movement." As he ran away. I yelled back to him "What if I don't want either?" He never answered me. Just have fun and laugh at whatever happens. Bobbie. C-4,5,6,7. 1973. yeah, 17 is not an option. mine is 16 but 'suppose" to be adjustable to 17 for coats in winterhaven't got to that adjustment! one would think a chair should NOT be such a HUGE transfer. It was between 18 and 19 inches wide, ordered between 16 and 17. Come to find out later, 17 inches wasn't an option, so they went to 18. I just dealt with it for about 5 years, when I was eligible for a new chair I went to a different company. They sent somebody out to take measurements and whatnot. Showed up at my front door about a month later with a new wheelchair (permobil), without any warning. I wasn't ready to take the new chair, I was home alone, nobody to transfer me into the new wheelchair so adjustments could be made. Luckily, they sent somebody out a few weeks later and took care of it. -Original Message- From: Fragile To: quad-list Sent: Mon, Jun 29, 2015 1:47 pm Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] new chair I had similar problems with a quantum 600. my new chair was delivered in april. i.m going from an invacare tdx 5 to a quatrum 6000 recline chair. my question to all who all who received their new chair and had so many adjustments .being fitted and measured found they just hate the new chair. she told me the new chair would be a 1/2 difference in height, no so true. ( i don;t clear my kitchen table, my computer desk is now way to low) the back has been adjusted numerous times, i feel like i'm falling out of it. i have to put towels under my feet to prevent the drop look, they can't be adjusted up any further. this just isn't right is it? so not happy. dianna
[QUAD-L] anniversary
Hello all, Today, 25 years ago, my brother, husband and I decided to go out for a ride on a beautiful, moonless June night on Lake Erie. The lake was smooth as glass. Going out they couldn't spot the steel breakwall and hit it. During this crash I was sleeping in the cuddy. My head was no competition to 1/4 inch of fiberglass and steel. It left me a C6/7 Quadriplegic. My husband's (Dave) got a broken shoulder as he was standing, looking for the breakwall and went through the steering wheel. My brother had stitches on his knee. My 3 yr old niece, also on board was thankfully not hurt! We took on no water and was able to drive the boat back to the coast guard station where I was lifeflighted to Cleveland. Man, I hate this story. Oh well, I'm still here! Dianna p.s. i don't post my years but this one marks 25 yrs!!

we were considering a cruise to mexico, via miami. we looked at the rooms on a norwegian cruise line with a balcony and i saw nowhere that there was room to fit a wheelchair through. a regular room offered much less of course. it looked like once transferred. turn around, sit in one spot for grooming. we didn't check any further on accessible rooms when we found a round trip airline fare was $600.00 ea (bulk-head, coach) from cleveland to miami. round trip so we wouldn't have to worry about the chair on connecting flights. plus extra transfers as my husband is getting older and i no lighter in weight. i used an aisle chair to the bahamas 20 yrs ago. they insisted they had to maneuver me. they lost me going down the stairs. dianna c6/7 < not going. Well that was interesting reading. -Original Message- From: RONALD L PRACHT To: Quad-list Post Sent: Thu, May 21, 2015 2:57 am Subject: [QUAD-L] interesting crime committed by quad Quadriplegic Accused as Killer HOUSTON, Sept. 9— A quadriplegic has been charged here with murdering his wife of two weeks by using his mouth to yank a string that was attached to the trigger of a handgun. Witnesses told the police that his wife had placed the string in his mouth just moments before. The 37-year-old victim, Bertha Mae Burns, was slain Monday night at a bar where she and her wheelchair-bound husband, James B. Burns, 40, had been talking. The police described the weapon that killed her as a 9-millimeter pistol mounted on a small board that Mr. Burns had across his lap. A string ran around two small screws in the board, they said, with one end of the string running to the trigger. A shoebox that had covered the entire apparatus was removed before the shooting. Mr. Burns was upset because his wife was planning to live in California and also because he suspected her of infidelity, the police said. ''According to witnesses, they were sitting there talking in quiet tones,'' said a police detective, A. J. Toepel. ''She then got up and put a string in his mouth, and he jerked his head back once and the gun went off.'' 'Talked Me Into Killing Her' A police sergeant, J C. Mosier, said Mrs. Burns must have placed the string in her husband's mouth, ''because he couldn't have done it.'' Sergeant Mosier said Mr. Burns, who was left a quadriplegic when shot several years ago by a previous wife, had told the police that he had wanted his wife to kill him but that ''she talked me into killing her.'' However, the sergeant said, Mr. Burns also told the police that he had jerked his head back only by accident. And in an interview Tuesday with The Houston Chronicle, Mr. Burns said: ''Somehow the string got pulled. Somehow she pushed my head back.'' In the interview, Mr. Burns could not explain why three bullets had hit his wife. The police have filed a murder charge against Mr. Burns but have not taken him into custody. Instead, he has been allowed to remain home pending a review of the case by a judge and is expected to appear in court Thursday. Ron

I was sitting in my van to escape the wind and read a book. My lil dog was in my lap and my desktop held my iPad. It was all quiet and peaceful. My lift door was open. Suddenly a fluttering sound filled the van. A brown bird with a long beak was sitting on the seat just a foot away from me. I talked to him and he tilted his head sideways like he understood. After a couple of minutes he jumped over on my arm, not ten inches from my face. I continued to talk and he acted like he understood every word, cocked his head sideways just like a dog. He was not the least bid afraid. I put my face near him and he pecked me on the cheek. This went on for about twenty minutes. Then he flew out the door, perched on a bush and looked at me, and then flew away. I honestly felt like I had had a spiritual experience! And my bark-a-lot chihuahua watched but never made a sound. I have a lot of crazy stories but I'll share one real quick. I went drag racing with Dave to a local strip on a Wednesday night (passenger night). The car broke down that night and there was no way he could make it home. Had to call a tow truck. We waited until mid-night and the track offered their hospitality of waiting with us inside the gates. Waited & waited. We see the lights show up at the entry gates. It gets closer and our jaws drop. It's a cab over, not a one-ton flat bed. He, by himself, got me up there. I had not been so high in a long time. Of course they couldn't leave me in the car which I begged for. Got home. The guy unloads the car. I gotta get out of this monster. Dave swings my legs around. I'm in a sitting position facing out the door holding on to a handle for pulling yourself up there. He's wayyy down there with my manual chair next to him. I'm crying, scared shitless (i'm sorry) he said "You have to trust me, Diane, when I say let go, let go of it" He yelled, " Let go". God must've pushed me because I let go, made a Perfect landing to his arms, his arms to my chair like we did it a 100 times in practice. I just to this day, can't believe he did that! Re: [QUAD-L] New Chair
hi greg, i don't know about insurance but i just got my new chair. it's a quantum 6000z. i really like it. going over bumps are nice. smooth ride. my rep told me 5mph was the max because of fda rules. still fast though! -Original Message- From: greg To: quad-list Sent: Tue, May 12, 2015 4:13 pm Subject: [QUAD-L] New Chair I need a new chair pretty soon. This one is falling apart. The repair shop said it's at the point it's costing more to keep it going. It needs motors, batteries, recline actuators. they all still work, just not great. My insurance covers 80%, but my 20% is still a big expense. The chair shop use to help out with co-pays, but now they have contracts with the insurance companies that say they wont do that anymore. I guess that prevents more people from getting chairs, keeps their costs down. I'm on a Medicare replacement program United Healthcare. I do not qualify for Medicaid. Anyone know of any type of secondary insurance that would help? I'm liking the Quantum 6000Z, 8mph. Greg

That was my first thought. I'm obviously not a doctor but my blood pressure is usually low. I don't add salt to my food, just tons of pepper. Gene, Being a C5 complete quad to do all that, I applaud you. And transfers? Your doing super! I'm a C6/7 complete, 25 yrs in June Dianna Hello Johnny- (This is my 1st reply so pardon the cross posting if it occurs) I have been a c5 complete quad for 22 years. About 5 years into this new lifestyle I needed to travel for my job. A caregiver was going with me but she had never helped me with my bowel care before. So about 6 months before the trip I started trying everything I could to do as much of it myself as ;possible. It wasn't long before I taught myself to be independent with my own bowel care. This is how I still do it. I use an E&J shower/commode chair. Stainless steel w/ gray upholstery. They stopped making these but you can still find some new or gently used ones on Craigslist and such. This chair has enough space below the cushion and the frame (on either side) to reach below your bottom. I use both a (1) suppository inserter and (2) dilly stick. I have my caregiver put a "magic bullet" in the suppository inserter once I have it on my hand. I have used a variety of mirrors over the years. I finally settled on a common bicycle mount (round) mirror that attaches to the frame, by the front castor. I lean to my left side with my right arm wrapped around the push handle. I insert the suppository and wait. I do the same with the dilly stick. The only thing I need help with is cleaning the 2 instruments and throwing out the trash. You see, I position a garbage can below my chair when I do my bowel program. That's it! Hope this helps you! Cheers, Gene Growing old is mandatory... I was 16, 1 year before my accident, camping in the adirondack mountains, (specifically Saranac Lake) it was 1972. I woke up in my sleeping bag snuggled warm inside a half wood half canvas cabin with no running water or electricity. It was just bearly starting to get light out at 5:35am with my sister's and a friend still sleeping near by. I pulled my legs out of the flannel bag and put my bare feet on the sandy wooden floor to search for my sneakers. As I tip toed to the screen door, I took my time to open it as to not wake anybody so I can have this precious time to myself. It was just light enough that I needn't light the Lantrens to find my way to the lake at the bottom of the sandy trail cut through wild blueberries bushes. I finally came upon my destination, an old green wooden canoe that had been pulled up upon the shore. I got in as quietly as possible and picked up an oar without making a sound. My father had taught me how to "Indian paddle" many years ago, a technique that was virtually silent. Once the paddle is in the water it never comes out. With some clever turns of the oar I had mastered the technique. I'm now right where I want to be ... in the middle of the Placid lake with fog hanging over the water not yet burned off. I just sat there, then finally I start to hear one bird start to waken with a chirp here and there. Then another bird returns his call. It's now getting brighter and the fog is starting to burn off the calm water. I laid back against the back of the canoe and watched my little part of the world wake up. It was one of the most exhilarating experience I've lived. Many, many times when I'm stressed, up set or angry, I can bring myself back to that canoe ride. That very same day I put a lack on my back

I took Dave to the VA hospital today (in Cleveland). In the parking garage they have a row of van parking for spinal cord injuries. All others will be towed. Had a sign towing a car. Awesome. Wished Wal-mart would do 1 or 2. Dianna

[QUAD-L] Braun suspension
Hello, There was a guy on the list that worked for Braun. I'm currently waiting on a response from MobilityWorks who didn't know the answer to my question. I want to replace anything my van might need while I have the money. I know I need a control arm & tie-rods ( sp?) On the back, are the shocks OEM? I don't want to buy something that won't last. Good news is I located a hatch & passenger door for $100 ea in Fla that my brother is bringing up. This is it's last shot being worked on. (from me) I have cancer & I just want it to last longer than me.2007 Caravan SXT. Dianna
Re: [QUAD-L] Cushions
y'all are scaring me! the only back-up i have on my van is for the 0-effort steering. it has a button to push should something happen to that for whatever reason. should i have a back up system on hand controls or check the brand? other than that, it's a 07 caravan with EZ-locks. Ive had two situations in my van that were crazy. One time I pressed down on the monarch hand control from a stop light and the accelerator got stuck at 85 percent throttle. The other time I was coming down a hill and the engine died, the people that installed my hand controls never accounted for the engine being off when you apply the brake using the hand control. Because I had to press much harder because the engine died there wasn't enough travel for the control and the control was hitting the dashboard and I couldn't stop. I quickly put the emergency brake on, then pressed as hard as I could on the hand control bending the plastic on the dash. I was able to get about 60 percent brake control and the added help from the emergency brake to be able to top just short of a pole. I mean only 20 feet to spare. The tie-down was a floor-post with the latch on the chair. In the first month it released me twice without cause. Fortunately I was going slow and able to stop both times. Until On July 14 I backed out of my parents drive. I pulled it into drive and pulled back on the accelerator. The van lurched forwardand my tie-down released. The van picked up speed and I went rolling helplessly to the back of the van. I left the road, jumped a ditch, and hit a large tree head-on at 45 mph. I was thrown forward violently and jammed under the dashboard. The van was totaled. It took EMT nearly three hours to get me out. My chair was bent like a pretzel, my legs broke and knees shattered, concussion and internal bleeding. The docs wanted to amputate my legs but I refused. Today they stay bent and spastic and make me miserable. I should have let them cut. Anyway, that's how I broke my legs. if i didn't have family here, i'd love to move to san diego. my sister lives in sacramento but my daughter and especially, my granddaughter is here so i can't do it. this is rather personal so i'll leave out all the details but my daughter's marriage was shaky for awhile. she was thinking of leaving state. she told her dad if she did, she was taking me with her. sweet but hey...i have a say in this and i did. i told her she wasn't taking my granddaughter anywhere, were all still here.
