Re: [QUAD-L] Undergraduate Research Study
Hello I am sorry but unfortunately because it is only undergraduate research, we do not have the funds to pay for participation. All I can offer you is the chance to help a fellow quad/college student earn credit and funds for school. I am currently working on my BS in Psychology and plan on getting my MA in occupational therapy. Here is a brief description of the McNair Scholar’s Program which I am doing the research for: Program Description This program prepares participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. Participants are from disadvantaged backgrounds and have demonstrated strong academic potential. Institutions work closely with participants as they complete their undergraduate requirements. Institutions encourage participants to enroll in graduate programs and then track their progress through to the successful completion of advanced degrees. The goal is to increase the attainment of Ph.D. degrees by students from underrepresented segments of society. Types of Projects Projects provide: academic counseling, financial aid assistance, mentoring, research opportunities, seminars, summer internships, and tutoring. Guidance for students seeking admission and financial aid for graduate programs also is supported. All information about the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program came from http://www.ed.gov/programs/triomcnair/index.html. Participation would be appreciated and feel free to tell anyone you know. Re: [QUAD-L] Undergraduate Research Study.... or you think your wiser than a Quad
W I understand your concern. It's the Internet and you never can tell. For all we know everyone on this list is a wheelchair pretender. Yes, like I said, I will gain money for school because of my own hard work and the information from voluntary participants. Although in my opinion helping others, again voluntarily, is a rewarded all in itself, but to each his own. I know your comments are respected on this list because I have been a member pretty much since my accident in 2000 and know you are almost always the first to respond. You have personally commented on several things that have helped me out. Granted every aspect of the web could be falsified, but I have posted my myspace in the past for all to view (http://www.myspace.com/harpinwheelie). I guess like you said it will be up to the individuals to decide. Thanks for helping to keep this list honest. Lucas PS After your 1st compensation comment I did ask if we could offer a small monetary amount, but it was denied. To the rest of the Quad-list: Participation in my study will get you no monetary compensation. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: QUAD-LIST@eskimo.com Sent: Tue, 10 Jun 2008 8:27 pm Subject: [QUAD-L] Undergraduate Research Study or you think your wiser than a Quad Again, with all due respect with you, your mentor and the McNair Scholar Program, you will earn and learn from our answers. So, I thought no problem to train a second if I treat my new Golden as a service dog then she will become one. Three years post the first passing away, I bought a healthy one year old. I had it half right but no getting around consistent daily work. Once after a year of work she continued to poop in Wal-Mart. I wanted to cry, in fact I did. After an extended vacation for her while I was hospitalized, she just forgot about pooping only in that store. I took this as communication and listened to her. I changed and realized that I was too hard with little joy. She became a very good dog. Not the class act but a very good dog. See your local animal shelter on how to certify if interested with $25.00 I was right that you need to remember she is a working dog which means no contact with so many people. Plus side is you are never alone. This gets so old in short time but if a service dog is what you want, then you must deny others that touch folks find irresistible. I am 42 years old and a C5/6 complete quadriplegic due to a car accident in a wind storm. In December of 2000, the top part of a tree broke off and fell on our minivan while we were driving about 35 or 40 miles an hour on a back road. Wrong place at the wrong time. My husband and I both broke our necks and had surgery to get them fused. There was more damage to my side of the van, which left me a quadriplegic. My husband fortunately did not have any permanent damage. I have movement of my arms, but no finger movement. We are in the midst of training our three-month old AKC yellow lab, which we got when she was seven weeks old. My husband is doing a great job with her. She was the youngest and most mellowest of the whole litter and should be around 60 pounds or so full-grown. Everyone that knows Labs says that she is not a lab because she is so mellow. She is potty trained and sleeps in a kennel during the night. Has anyone out there trained their dogs to do things for them? I still need to find a way to be able to give her treats. Any suggestions? Hooray! Not sure if any of you guys have seen or tested the latest chair from Permobil, but its nice. I ordered my c-350 corpus in December and just delivered it. Re: [QUAD-L] New Permobil
Lori Yea this is my first Permobil. This is only my second chair--my first was a Quickie P-222. Back pain is part of the reason I got the Permobil. I'm very active always doing a lot of transfers, moving my body all the time, and riding my handcycle (my body gets exausted). So when I found a chair that was smooth, low, could recline, and was sexy I jumped all over it. Don't get me wrong I tested many other power chairs in a rehab setting before I settled on this one. Even the c-350's big brother the Permobil Street (too tall). In the end,the c-350 had everything I wanted and needed in a small package. Because of bleaches toxicity as an internally used chemical, I was inspired to write the thread a few weeks ago asking if any of you prevent urine from the bed bag tube from running back into your bladder. A local nursing home cleans the bed bags with bleach and water then reattaches it to the SP catheter. Everyone in the home has awful and persistant infections while taking assorted anti biotics daily. I personally called the doctors of record about 2 patients that were showing signs of fatal reactions to macrodantin. (I'm amazed nurses are so afraid of doctors that they won't do such things.) Maybe its in the hippa rules not do anything to save Med/Med patients. So, here is a new trick to try if you have an SP catheter. Attach a small leg bag to your catheter and leave it there. Do Not disconect it. When transferring bed bags and other leg bags, simply attach them to the drain side of the permanent leg bag. Goal: Adding an extra barrier to germs and chemicals and reducing infections. ? My big question is, why do you flush your bladders? Don't you change your catheter once a month? Even when folks say they use sterile techniques with replacement of catheters, there are new bacteria introduced. If you are as incredibly sterile about your technique, the best you can achieve is to be clean. ? good luck and best wishes, john - Original Message From: David K. Re: [QUAD-L] RE: Baclofen pump
I have heard that the pump has helped a lot of people but me personally i had a bunch of problems with it. the skin over the pump was very painful to the touch. my spasms kept getting worse the more they raised the dosage. the doctor found bacteria in the baclofen fluid so i told them to remove the pump. afterthe surgery to remove mypump i went home for about an hour when my mom noticed a puddle of clear liquid on the ground under my chair. IT WAS SPINAL FLUID. so i went to the emergency room had my back double stichted and glued then i went home again. more fluid leaked out and i ended up staying in the hospital for 3 days on my back. all of this went on in a 1 1/2 yr. period. oh yea not to mention the other 5 surgeries i had to test the pump to find out why it wasn't working. luke

Tasks ranging from moving his or her newly paralyzed body around, stretching, and working out can all affect the shape of a wheelchair users body. One major task that can affect a wheelchair users body, specificallytheshoulders, is propelling a manual wheelchair. Many good intentioned professionals--including doctors, physical therapists, wheelchair salesmen, and nurses--often advise wheelchair users incorrectly by suggesting that they push a manual wheelchair to build strength when in reality it could cause a severe shoulder (or other?) injury.

hey all i survived rita! but i think the heats about to kill me. i get my brother to toss me in the lake (filled with cold rainwater) twice a day. the only electricity we have is a small generator that we use to power the fridge, a few fans, and the computer (as long as we have gas). my mom is cooking with a propane grill for now. i'm sure i have enough supplies and pillsto get me through a month or so (thats how long i heard it was going to be until we get power).i've been hearing of looting going on around myarea. i heard on the radio that the eye passed 20 miles east of us; in jasper, texas. during the stormone tree fell on my room and across the hood of my van. in all we had about 12 trees fall in our yard alone (tall pine trees). there were so many trees we couldn't even see out the front door but my brother started the day after, along with some help, and now most of the front yard is clean. through all this i feel pretty damn good, though. good day to all! [QUAD-L] info about spasms
Spinal Cord Injury - InfoSheet #16Level - ConsumerDate: December, 2001 What is Spastic Hypertonia? Spastic Hypertonia (SH) is a term that doctors are now using to offer a more complete description of spasticity and various conditions of extreme muscle tension. Spastic Hypertonia refers to uncontrollable “jerking” movement (muscle spasms), stiffening or straightening out of muscles (rigidities), shock-like contractions of all or part of a muscle or group of muscles (myoclonus), and abnormal tone in the muscles (dystonia). Understanding Sensation Reflex When people touch something hot, their first reaction to the sensation of heat is to quickly jerk away from the heat. This is an example of a reflex reaction to touch or pain. The body reacts to signals that are sent through nerves from the area of sensation to the various reflex centers of the body. The reflex center in the brain works best at identifying sensations and sending signals back through nerves in the spinal cord to tell your body how to react. Other reflex centers are located at different levels of the spinal cord, but these reflex centers are not as accurate as the brain in identifying sensations and telling the body how to react to those sensations. The body reacts best when all of the body’s reflex centers are working together to identify sensations and tell the body how to react. After a Spinal Cord Injury Spastic Hypertonia does not occur immediately after spinal cord injury. When individuals are first injured, their muscles are weak and flexible because their body’s reflexes are absent below the level of injury. This condition is known as “spinal shock,” which can last for a few weeks or several months. Once the spinal shock is over, reflex activity returns. However, the normal flow of nerve signals below the level of injury is interrupted. Those signals may not reach the reflex center of the brain. If all of the body’s reflex centers cannot work together to moderate the body’s response to those signals, the reflex centers of the spinal cord attempt to moderate the body’s response. Because the spinal cord is not as efficient as the brain, the signals that are sent back to the site of the sensation are often over exaggerated. This is an over active muscle response and now referred to by doctors as Spastic Hypertonia. Most individuals with SCI experience Spastic Hypertonia in some form, but they do not necessarily experience SH all of the time. Persons with tetraplegia and persons with incomplete injuries are more likely than persons with paraplegia and persons with complete injuries to experience SH. It is most common for individuals with SCI to experience muscle spasms that bend the elbow (flexor) or extend the leg (extensor). These spasms usually occur as a result of an automatic response to painful sensations. Many individuals who are newly injured often mistake their first movements caused by SH as a return in motor movement. Effects of Spastic Hypertonia Many individuals with SCI take advantage of their muscle spasms to help them perform activities of everyday living. For example, some individuals learn to trigger spasms in their hands and fingers to help pick up light items such as a pencil or magazine. Some people may learn to use their spasms to help empty their bladder, do pressure reliefs, transfer, dress, and even stand or walk. It is normal for individuals who are newly injured to experience changes in their muscle tone and central nervous system soon after injury. However, a change in your spasms after your initial injury can act as a warning sign that there is a problem in areas where you may have no feeling. If you do not normally have SH and start to experience muscle spasms or if your spasms get worse or even decrease, you should talk to your doctor. Any type of change can be a warning sign for problems such as a pressure sore, urinary tract infection, ingrown toenail, tight clothing or constipation. You may have a cyst on your spinal cord, a tumor, Guillain-Barre syndrome, transverse myelitis or a spinal cord stroke. Possible Advantages of Spastic Hypertonia Maintain muscle tone and mass. Reduce bone loss and decrease the risk for osteoporosis. Increase metabolic requirements such as promoting blood circulation and improving breathing. Better perform daily self-care routines such as assisting in pressure reliefs to prevent pressure sores and emptying reflex bladder and bowel. Better perform daily functions such as picking up items, transferring or walking with braces. Warn when there is a problem in areas where the body has no feeling. Possible Disadvantages of Spastic Hypertonia Limit range of motion. Cause pain due to stress put on joints and muscles. Interfere with daily functions such driving, walking with braces, and other activities. Cause unwanted bladder or bowel release. Interfere with other activities

Gabe's Mom, i knowexactly what he is going through. i had the same problem for a number of years. serious pain (in my hips, back, tailbone), dysreflexia, horrible spasms. i really thought i was going to die and everyone that came around me just felt bad because no one could help.iwas always taking pain pills. i also tried the baclofen pump, with poor results and numerous hospital stays trying to find out why it wasn't doing what it is supposed to do.i only had the pump for a couple of years and i had to have a lot of surgeries. (die studies, re-gluing, pump changing) i also found the pump areawould hurt to the touch.after i had the pump removed spinal fluid kept leaking out of my back through the stitches for about a week. what level is your son? how long has it been since his accident?is he incomplete or complete? what kindof wheelchair does he have? does it tilt? What kind of cushion? does he have a pressure sore? answer these questions and I'll see if i can come up with some ideas. i rarely have pain anymore buti still get dysreflexia sometimes and i've found that if i drink plenty of water, more than what i'm thirsty for sometimes, that i don't get dysreflexia as much. luke c-5/6 incomplete, 5yrs post, got hurt when i was 17 riding a dirtbike In a message dated 8/16/2005 9:00:10 PM Central Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I have posted several times about Gabe, my son and a problem that he is having with autonomic dysreflexia (AD) and pain. It started with AD in the late afternoon and some bladder and bowel spasms would follow. The Ad would resolve when he would lay down. Now he has serious pain. We have been to all the doc’s. The urologist says he has two kidney stones. One in each kidney. She thinks they are to small to cause the problem, but says it’s possible. Neurosurgeon says his shunts are ok and he does not think anything in the spine could cause this. The abdominal ct shows a small gall stone in the neck of the gall bladder. The surgeon doubts it’s the cause. So I started thinking about when was the last time Gabe had pain like this. It was before he got his baclofen pump and the central cord pain, skin pain and spasms about killed him. He got a new pump last summer and almost died from an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. So he went two months last summer without his pump when he was in the hospital. He was drugged on morphine for most of the time. He was too ill from the allergic reaction to replace the pump. So his baclofen pump dose now is a lot lower then it was before last summer. So the question is…. could the pain that is going on now be central cord pain and the AD be a response to the central cord pain. I’ve made an apt for him to see his rehab doc. Until then I’m going to give him oral baclofen everyday as an experiment. What do you guys think? I’m asking you guys because Gabe can’t tell me everything that’s going on. When it comes to this problem he can just tell me about the pain. Help! Gabe’s mom

[QUAD-L] hanger
it took me awhile to learn to transfer to the stander. it's a little tricky. you bend the hanger like this. put the end of the hanger that has the red box around it through the button hole, then put the button in the very tip of the part of the hanger w/ the red box around it. pullthe hanger and the buttonback through the hole. like thredding a needle. luke He has the stander and the upper tone already. Just got the upper tone off of EBay this summer. Made quite a buy on it too but getting here was a bit expensive. Stander is difficult to use because he needs assistance. I am going to forward your email to him. I know he will value your experience and advice. He has a manual and a power chair. He only uses the sliding board when someone else is helping him but not when he does independent transfers. He is really just learning to transfer himself regularly. He is starting to pass on attendants getting him into bed at night. How do you use the coat hanger? I really appreciate your feedback and guidance. Karen
Re: [QUAD-L] bowel mgmt
karen the thing that helped me become indepedent the most was transfering. i was very weak when i first came home after my accident but i went back to rehab a second time and they helped me build up my strength enough to start moving myself around some . i started working out, stretching, and getting on my stander. now i doa lot of stuff myself. does your son have a manual or electricwheelchair? i have both. when i'm in my electric i put my shower chair against the wall and pin it there with my electric, transfer, move electric. do everything in reverse to get back in. when transfering from a manual chair to the shower chair does he use a transfer board? i used to but after awhile i got enough strength to do it without it. if he doesn't use a transfer board make sure thathe lifts and not scoots to to the other chair. the wheelchair slides because he's trying to scoot, i used to have that problem. he may need to build up some more strength. let me know if you have anymore questions. luke here's a tip: a wire coat hanger can aid you in getting yourself dressed. i canbutton my pants and shirt, zippers, i've even use it to move the sprinkler aroundto water our yard. try these links. i use an EASY STAND stander frame, which medicaid purchased. for working out i have an UPPER TONE gym. it's quad friendly and i had people donate money to help purchase it. you do need a lot of space for the UPPER TONE, though. He is transferred into the shower chair and then attendant inserts dill stick in for him and he stims for 20 min then attendant takes over. He has been successful to some degree but not enough to do the complete job. If stick comes out he needs help getting it back in, he can’t find the hole. Sorry for the bluntness but as you know this is the life. He doesn’t have suppository inserter and has never used suppositories. He has only used oral stool softener and laxative. He currently has program M, W, F. He is now able to transfer himself into wheelchair although last week he ended up in the floor when the brakes didn’t hold and chair slid on the floor. How do you deal with placement of wheelchair and shower chair? He has fair use of triceps. Doesn’t have total triceps function but enough when he makes up his mind to do something. Any guidance is appreciated. He is very tired of having so many people in his life doing things for him. He wants to be for real on his own. hello everyone i was just sitting outside looking at the ducksby the lake in our backyard with my dog, Daisy. doesn't her name just sound so sweet. well that sweet dog just pulled me out of my chair trying too get the ducks. i caught myself at first but i had the leashwrapped around my hand and she finished the job she started. to make things worst it started to rain. luckily there was a man across the lake that helped me back in my chair. this is the second time she's done it and i guess ididn't learn my lesson the first time.icouldn't punish her because by the time i was back where i could, she had already forgotten what she did. now she'slaying insideby my chair because she's scared of thunder. poor baby. luke
Re: [QUAD-L] bowel mgmt
karen i am an incomplete and i have some feeling. my left hand doesn't work but i can move my thumb and index fingers on my right a little. how long has been paralyzed? has he tried doing his own BP yet? does he have all the equipment?(stimmer, suppository inserter) i'm assuming he uses a suppository, i use amagic bullet suppositoryevery other day. you may be able to use the cheaper version of the magic bullet but it didn't work for me. if you give me your address i'll send you an almostfull box of the generic brand. does he have pretty good use of his triceps? i only have a little use of mytriceps so lean i on my bed to insert the suppository. tell him to make sure his brakes are locked.he doesn't wantto get stuck laying on the bed and his chair roll out. i think the most important thing about doing your own BP is toget enough fiber along with plenty of water. getting lots of fiber and not drinking enough water willconstipate you. when i 1st started trying to do my own BP i was always having to get someone to stem me. i've gotten a method down for doing a lot of things. i do my own BP, shower, dress myself, i can open a can of tuna and make atuna sandwich and this is ALL while i'm at home alone during the day. people think i'm lying all the time when i tell them all i can do, just because i look helpless. he just has to start tryingand find out whatworks for him. luke 22, c-5/6, 5yrs post, In a message dated 8/6/2005 10:31:44 PM Central Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: How are you able to do your own bowel program? i had no ill feelings toward the lady. i am just not the kind of person to take money from a little old lady. now if i had a tip jar sitting in my lap and was playing the harmonica i would have gladly recieved. luke In a message dated 8/7/2005 3:25:28 PM Central Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: luke try this I went to 125th st. in Harlem/NYC to videotape the exterior of the Apollo Theater and some guy who looked to be living "al fresco" felt he could vent his anger at "the man" by putting 3 pennies by the joystick on my chair. I resisted the natural reaction to brush them away (after all I was not in the position to return his insult) when I moved my chair back for a wider angle, the pennies fell to the ground. About a minute later, a well kept, Sunday-best / hat wearing little 'ol lady stopped to pick up the money with her clean white gloves. You could almost hear her thinking;"find a penny, pick it up" When my eyes met the idiot who left me the money. There was no need for words. This sent him ranting down the streetand screaming about racial persecution, with no concern that his foul language might be offending the other "little 'ol ladies" in ear-shot. My point is- yeah, the woman at Target was a dweeb, but her heart was in the right place. It's the false concern that is the real insult. Use the incident as a chance to share your perspective so she won't be dweeb again -Cameron

steve do you get a criminal background check on the caregivers you hire? luke In a message dated 8/7/2005 8:58:05 PM Central Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I have a similar situation where I only need less than 1 hour per visit. I advertise for my caregivers and start them out at $8/hr with a 1 hour guarantee each visit. I increase their rate to $10/hr if things are going well after 4 weeks. When you interview your applicants, hang on to the information for anyone you would even consider hiring, since no one will stay forever. I have hired caregivers from interviews I had done 6-12 months before hand. Sometimes you will get lucky and have several strong candidates to choose from. I actually prefer caregivers with little or no experience so I do not have to deal with those who insist they know how to assist you better than you can tell them. My best caregivers had no experience whatsoever. They only knew my way. This approach isn't perfect. I have had 1-2 week gaps between hirees. Thank goodness for family during those times. Good luck... Steve

i didn't know jack shit about quads before i became one and still it took a few years for me to learn all the interworkings of quad life. when i first had my accident, i rememberpeople asking me if i would ever ride another dirtbike and i kept telling people, "oh yea, as soon as i heal up." there i was sitting in bed couldn't even feed myself.it's hard for people to become conscious to things they don't experience (physically, emotionally). if i hadn't been injured i probably would beoutat the theaternot knowing the guy in the handicapped section in front of mewas pissing through a tube. be patient with those who don't understand besides murderball justcame maybe more people wil understand. luke c5/6, 5yrs post
