My shoulder blade hurts so bad I feel sick. Its like a knife is sticking under
there prying it up. It comes and goes for years now. I’ve been to every type of
doctor and had every test. They can’t find a cause. My guess would be pinched
nerve, but they tested for that. Had me hooked up to a bunch of electrodes.
Catscan, MRI, Xray, Ultrasound, etc. It can be gone for weeks, but then show up
for hours, days, weeks, etc.

My sister had a similar problem and it turned out it was her Thyroid. Who knew
your Thyroid could hurt your shoulder blade. But I was tested for that a few
times.

I'm on pretty good pain meds for other things, but it does not even dent this.

Re: [QUAD-L] Shoulder

That's the big question. What brings it on. I do the same basic things every day. Yet it comes and goes. May start when up for hours, may start when in bed a time. When cold out, or warm out. May last a hour, may last a month. Was gone for about 2 months once. Its been a couple years now since it started. Sounds like a pinched nerve to me, but the Neurologist said the test they did would detect that, even if not hurting at the time.

Re: [QUAD-L] Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

2016-03-29 Thread Robert Vogel
Hi Ron and Carolyn,

Carolyn, I wrote a Para/Medic column (September 2015, New Mobility, see link)
about shoulder
replacement surgery in people with spinal cord injuries. Fortunately there are
new techniques including
reverse shoulder replacement that are providing good results in rebuilding
shoulders. It is serious surgery and should only be considered when all other
options have failed. That said, surgeons that I spoke with say it gives people
good results.

The key is finding a surgeon that is well versed in doing shoulder
replacements—a surgeon that has done hundreds of shoulder replacements. Also
it is crucial that you have a good plan for rehab as you
won’t be able to move your arm for about 3-months.

Here is the link to the article:
http://www.newmobility.com/2015/09/shoulder-replacement-wheelchair-users/

I was fortunate to interview some of the top orthopedic surgeons in the field
for this article. Again, make sure you have a surgeon that has done at least
hundreds of shoulders—or more. Make sure you communicate with the surgeon what
the outcomes will be, what you need your shoulder for and make sure you have a
good plan for rehab.

The people with spinal cord injury I interviewed had very good outcomes.

Please feel free to drop me an email if you have questions as I *might* have
answers from the many
interviews and/or research papers I looked at for this article.

I'm probably going to be way off base, but I am unable to move my arms and
I find the best solution is to use armrest which support the arm and
shoulder. I still have shoulder pain, but if I have the proper amount of
air in my cushioned and I'm sitting in the appropriate spot in my chair,
the pain is minimal.

I know it's more difficult when you drive chair with your hand, so I don't
really have an answer there.

A lot of my shoulder pain is because I have to have the back of my chair
slightly reclined, because I get a tremendous amount of bladder pain if I
sit upright. I feel for you and I hope you're able to get some sort of
relief which also improves your quality of life.

I was having shoulder pain and the physical therapist had me doing exercises
that pull back the shoulders. I was skeptical, but it helped me along with a
few other exercises I cant describe. I was told that the shoulder has different
heads and you need to figure out which you are overusing, then strengthen the
opposite ones. Ive also dealt with bursitis which scared me because I thought I

Greg,
I too have sever shoulder pain in both shoulders (25 years post). You're right,
we use our muscles in ways they shouldn't be used. It causes tendons to fail
and bone on bone problems.

I was part of a trial in which that injected my platelets spun down from my own
blood into the shoulder cavity to regenerate the tendon. It worked well but
after a year the pain returned. A word of caution, the procedure must trick the
body into forcing white blood cells to the area by mimicking an injury. The Dr.
actually scraped calcification he saw on the bone, using Ultra scan. Hurt like
hell.

Now, I have both shoulders injected every 4 months with cortisone and
Lidocaine. It's covered by medicare and you can have it done three times a
year, after getting approval. It can give you back some quality of life.

Larry,

How are you doing with the shoulder?

Yes, I went through the same and the first time I really had a problem
driving
was after making a left turn, then not being able to turn the wheel as my
shoulder locked.

I spent a lot of my life in a manual wheelchair (C5-6) and ruined my
shoulders because
of it. Hindsight is 20/20 and for the life of me, can't understand why
people stay in a manual chair.
I was always told that it will keep your arms strong, but an electric chair
not only is easier on the shoulders,
it opened up my world for me.

I use the stretchie bands to exercise and in winter the extra insulated
underwear top and sweat shirt
brings the pain.  It takes about a month for my muscles to strenghten
and the pain to start to subside.

The Dr. said both rotator cups are shot and need surgery, but with little
heavy lifting above my shoulder
I can't justify it. I also have 2 torn tendons and he said if another one
goes my arm will be dead.

Re: [QUAD-L] Shoulder pain

2012-09-22 Thread Candle
A while ago, I started having pain that extended from my left shoulder, up my
neck, and into my lower left jaw. It would come and go, but seemed to be
getting more intense. I thought I was developing heart problems and made an
appointment with my doctor. She did an office exam and scheduled x-rays. I
would have expected an EKG. She knew what she was doing. It turned out I had
arthritis starting on my collar bone and shoulder area.

I then saw a specialist. He looked at my x-rays and told me that I had
arthritis and by the way it was or where it was, he believed it to be related
to my extra use of my arms because of my SCI. He suggested trying to use my
cane less and try to use my arms less with the heavy lifting and using my legs
more. I could not figure out how to use my arms less when getting out of a
chair or in and out of bed.

I carry my cane in my right hand, but in the house, I don't use the cane. I
furniture walk or I don't hold onto things. So working in the yard walking
along the chain link fence without my cane. I use the cane for balance and it
was more of a security blanket. I just felt safe having it in my hands. I got
to the point that I was confident enough to walk without my cane. Strangely,
NOT using the cane in my right hand helped my left shoulder calm down.

Now, I try to avoid using my cane. I will use my walker, delux model with a
seat, if I have to go out or I hold onto my husband if I need to. Otherwise, I
ony leave the house when I am having a great day.

SO after all that, the pain might not be what you think it is. As another
poster replied that if ibuprofen and heat don't help, then you might want to
see a doctor.

If ibuprophen and heat takes the pain away you are golden. If not you may ave

possibly heat could help. The only thing that will tell the whole story of
damage is an mri. A ct scan can only tell you if the basic bone structure is

I have some tendentious and arthritis in both of my shoulders but I had
that before I was injured five years ago. When my shoulders are sore I
have my caregiver give me a massage with their hands and stick
therethumbsin the sore spot as hard as possible. This makes me
want to leap out of the chair but when they are done I'm pain-free. If my
shoulders feel a little stiff or sore I will also have been used a massager on
me and that really helps. I have my caregivers do some light to range of
motion every now and then but I prefer the massages to keep everything
loose.

I seem to have a lot of the same pain and sensation that several people on
this list have but I must have a higher pain tolerance than others because the
sensations and pain only remind me that I am alive. I do have Diazepam
that my doctor prescribed for me to accent my Baclofen for spasms but I only use
it to help me sleep every few blue moon's. I request only 50 pills per
prescription and I usually end up throwing away 30-40 or sometimes more every
couple of years or when I go to my yearly visit to the doctor, if I remember to
take them along.

Often the shoulder blades and collarbone feels like it is broken, long after
the spine
has healed. I believe that it is due to a nerve harness that comes over the
shoulders
and crisscrosses over the chest, down to the diaphragm. These the muscles
have a bad habit of spasming causing that pain. Most anyone in massage
training
can work
those muscles. It takes some time. Chemicals help, like mint, hot pepper
rub and some of the store preps along with infra-red heat, to loosen those
muscles. Just make sure that they have some idea of what they are doing. Too
much
pressure early
on is not good. Check out your yellow pages for massage schools in your hood
and offer to be a subject. You never know...

I chose power chair early into paralysis because one can do so much

Take advise from a 39+ year quad who used a manual chair for 20 years.

USE AN ELECTRIC!

Not only does it wear out your joints, (torn tendon that can't be repaired
and torn rotator cuff), but an electric chair broadens your world.

Got some answers for you, hope they are of some help to you!

1. Yes, I push a manual chair.
2. I haven't had a shoulder injury due to pushing, although I have
developed further wrist problems through pushing.
3. I was straight away put in a manual chair as I'm a paraplegic.
They are very against me using an electric chair or getting someone to push me
as they feel pushing myself is an excellent form of exercise for me!

Hope that's of some help,

Hi Luke,I was injured 12 years
ago at C4-5 and could only move my shoulders at first. Then I slowly got
more movement back in my arms and insisted I try to push a manual
wheelchair. Some PT's thought I should give it a try and others didn't
think it was a good idea. I did not listen and attempted to use a manual
chair even though I couldn't really get around much. I ended up way
overusing my shoulders and got tendinitis and bursitis in both my shoulders that
is still painful today. I wish I would have listened and stuck with my
power chair from the beginning and just used an arm bike for exercise and to
keep my shoulders loose.Good luck on your
essay!CorieRedding, CA

Hi Luke,

In '76 the medical rehab thinking was that if a person could push a chair it would help build theirupper body strength. I pushed myself until I had a disarticulation of my right leg in '89, and by then the medical thinking wasthat having a Quad push themselves was just wearing out their shoulders. I went to a power chair in '89 but both my shoulders grind and ache from all the wear I put on them pushing myself in a manualchair. I hope this helps.

Hi Glenn,

Not common for a power chair but it does happen. For me the surgery would be the last option. I prefer a canvas sling.

I'll say a prayer that your decision is the best for you. Stay strong.

Re: [QUAD-L] Shoulder problems

2005-06-04 Thread Stuntman
After enduring shoulder pains since my accident for over 8 years and
being told it was just arthritis, I finally got a doc who knew about
this common problem in quads. Not all of our shoulder muscles function
properly, the lack of triceps etc, cause uneven support of all the
different bones that come together to form the shoulder. Thus the
shoulder isn't held in proper alignment causing pain similar to it
being out of place. Other than tendon transfers there is no cure for
this. That surgery requires 3 mo of careful recuperation and several
casts to be worn to immobilize the arm at different stages of being
bent. I opted out being over 50. I don't want to spend up to 6 mo just
playing with the recuperation and following therapy.
Torn is a different thing, a good doc can perform micro-surgery using a
small incission instead of opening your shoulder like a fillet of fish.
Good luck in your search for a good shoulder surgeon but get an expert.
If you already have an injury, you should be using a sling big enough
for your arms to be on the inside eliminating the stress.
