[RBW] Re: New Bike Syndrome

2018-01-12 Thread drew
I just finished the 6th month wait for my new Atlantis. In that purgatory
time,

-I pulled everything off of a donor bike and assessed what i was going to
keep and what I wanted to get new or different versions of.
-cleaned it all.
-sold the stuff that i wasn't going to use on the new frame.
-researched and bought new components
-researched and bought new components
-researched and bought new components
-researched and bought new components
-researched and bought new components
-researched and bought new really unnecessary components

and then the frame showed up!

[RBW] Re: Matt from Crust - PLP Talks

2018-01-10 Thread drew
I agree. This is a really good counterpoint to the sceney, super hip stuff on
instagram. It’s nice to hear him talk and just be a down to earth normal guy.
I’ve been liking what he’s making, but also have been a little dubious about
supporting what seemed sorta like an inside joke that I wasn’t in on. I’m much
more likely to be a customer now.

As a side note, I really appreciate that riv has built a idiosyncratic brand
without ever feeling like they are trying or especially not trying to be cool.
It makes things feel more inclusive.

[RBW] Rear supports- marks, erlen etc

2018-01-09 Thread drew
I’m attempting to have my Atlantis in always ready tour mode and yet not be
over equipped for daily normal riding. So far this consists of a 3 bar pass and
stow rack with a medium basket. Daily, just the basket gets used but panniers
go on for overnights.
I’d like to add something to the back to support a 10-20ish lb load in a medium
saddle sack without adding a full rear rack, since I won’t use a saddlebag most
of the time.
What are people liking for a rear support? I like the minimalism of the ocean
air erlen, but wonder about the saddle interface and noodliness. I have a spare
marks rack that I’m thinking about using on the back too. Any other options I
should be looking at?
Also, how does one assess a weight limit for a rear support when a lot of the
weight is being carried by the saddle itself?

I use a half wedge frame bag from roadrunner bags that doesnt monopolize
too much space. i keep a water bladder/straw in it that is the same size as
a nalgene. that way i can get to the water easier while riding and can use
a water bottle for keeping food/alcohol in.

[RBW] Long pull levers slipping around

2018-01-06 Thread drew
I have motolites with portolas and the tektro levers. I haven’t had any
slipping, as far as I can tell.
One thing I did notice is that the clamp bolt is way back in there and unless
you have a super long Allen wrench, it’s hard to get any torque to really
tighten it down. I think I used a mini cheater bar to extend the the short side
of the Allen wrench a couple of inches.

If it’s not that, You could always take a clamp off of a lever you like and use
that in the tektro instead of the clamp it came withassuming the bolt
threading is the same.

And finally, I think cane creek is tektro rebranded. There is a dia-compe long
pull aero model out there, I believe.

[RBW] Re: A Homer Hilsen vs LHT - Will I notice a difference?

2017-12-29 Thread Drew Henson
Thanks for the input everyone,. I am in the Seattle area, and my goals this
year are to do more gravel riding and to complete the Seattle to Portland
ride. My primary use, however, is a 9 mile commute (with some decent
climbs in parts) with the previously mentioned 10-15 lbs. I'm really
looking for a bike to tackle the commute but also be able to handle the
Seattle to Portland ride (another bike will be my gravel bike). Seems like
the AHH is probably the best Riv to handle that I just wanted some opinions
over the difference over the LHT. With the LHT i definitely notice the
weight on my commute and I want something snappier.

[RBW] A Homer Hilsen vs LHT - Will I notice a difference?

2017-12-27 Thread Drew Henson
Are there any surly LHT owners that also have an A Homer Hilsen? I'm
curious how the ride really differs, in practical terms. I currently own
an LHT and it's been a great bike, but it's "too much" bike for me. I'm
looking for something that would be snappier than the LHT but still able to
carry a 10-15 lb commuting load. I've liked to looks of an AHH for a long
time but am concerned that I'd be trading one heavy steel bike for another,
without much difference in the ride when it comes down to it.

Then there's the AHH vs Sam Hilborne debate I guess, which Rivendell
brought up themselves when I emailed asking about AHH availability.. So if
you've owned a Sam and an LHT I'd be interested in your experience as well.

I've browsed this use group a bunch but this is my first post, so thanks in

[RBW] Bullnose bars for long gravel rides?

2017-12-24 Thread drew
It depends on the version. Vintage ones are not great for me. Hard to get high,
and very flat/straight. New riv ones are much improved and maybe the best
looking bar ever. That said, I think a map/ahearne style bar offers a similar
yet better set of positions, and a more customizable fit.

Don't know about brakes, but 44 on a 18-19 rim shouldn't be an issue. I had
50mm marathons on dyads (I think they are 19mm internal) on a Sam and there was
nothing close to an issue that came up. This was with Paul racers. I'd bet the

[RBW] Re: Banana Sax Pics?

2017-12-23 Thread drew
I've had all three. Size would go XS, banana, S. sackville small isn't exactly
small, and the shape of it really utilizes space. I used to regularly get 2
takeout boxes in mine without hassle or jostling of the food. The banana is
smaller for sure, but the way space is used almost makes it not comparable to
the sackville small. It's a really useful bag but more for riding essentials
like Lock/jacket/tools and doesn't feel as saddlebaggy. XS is too small for my
liking. Couldn't fit much more than a tube and a few tools.

[RBW] Re: Real ride comparison: Joe Appaloosa vs Sam Hillborne vs Roadini?

2017-12-18 Thread drew
I had a hunqapillar, then I got a Sam hillborne with the intention of doing
what you describe. 1 tourish and one fastish. Long story short, Sam never felt
much faster than the hunq. It probably was, marginally, but it never felt
sprightly. I sold the Sam first.

All that said, in my experience, a hillborne is about as close to a do-anything
bike as I've ever ridden. It is equally a road bike as it is a dirt road
tourerbut if you have a dirt road tourer, why buy something else that is
half overlapping?

I only have an Atlantis now. If I was to get a second bike, and it was going to
be a riv, I'd get the roadini.

[RBW] Re: New Greenlantis/ seatpost size?/ crazy pack job

2017-12-13 Thread drew
Yes, correct.
It has a seat stay cross bar thing with fender mounts. there is no need for
an actual brake bridge, because either canti's or v's dont need that.
Atlanti used to have a curved brake cable stop that went across the
stays (which i think is what eric was referring to) and a bridge for
mounting fenders. now they just have the bridge.

>
I asked about the cable stop when i ordered, because i specifically didn't
want it and was told that it is not standard anymore. i'd imagine that you
could add it as a braze on.

Verified with Riv that all cantilever models are now 28.6. They don't put
rear brake bridges on anymore because enough people are using V-brakes,
which is what i'll be doing.

[RBW] FS-1983/4 Specialized Expedition 58cm. New everything. Compass, nitto, dynamo, etc.

2017-12-08 Thread drew
Another thing to sell that i'll regret pretty soon. Life changes have led
to the need to unload bikes. I purchased this recently and basically put
all new parts on it, thinking it would be my everyday bike. It has sat
mostly on a trainer since. I just got word that my Atantis frame has
arrived at Riv, so this has to go. For size reference, i am about 5'10
with an 85pbh and its comfortable, but on the large end for me.

*1983/84 Specialized expedition. 58cm frame.*

-Front wheel-sp pv8-sun rhynolite 36h 700c
-Rear-shimano hub-sun cr18 36h 700c
-Compass Barlow pass 700x38
-Shimano 8sp cassette
-Deore rd
-Altus fd
-Sugino xd2 triple 172.5
-Nitto technomic stem 10ish cm
-Nitto noodle bars 46-48cm with shellacked newbaums
-Riv Silver bar end shifters/pods
-Tektro aero levers
-Vintage shimano cantis on front, tektros on rear.
-New chain, new shimano BB, new jagwire housing, new cables

Brooks saddle and vp pedals, not included. i do have other pedals that i
can put on for free. All parts were purchased in 2017 and are in excellent
condition. The compass tires were purchased lightly used and probably have
65% of their life left.

Frame has all sorts of cool braze-ons. Front, midfork and rear rack mounts.
Fender mounts. Above bb cable guides. Mounts for 3 bottles. Paint is in
pretty good shape for being 30+years old. Some scratches here and there. no
dents, dings, gouges etc. Very light surface rust on some of the scratches.
i tried to capture this in the photo of the top tube. Decals are in
excellent shape. Interior was clean and treated with frame saver. One of
the rear/upper rack mounts is getting kinda stripped, so it should be
re-tapped if you intend to use it. Max tire size is 38mm. you could
probably go 42 in the rear without fenders. the fork is the tight spot.
Cleaned, lubed and kept indoors. Bike is 100% good to go.

*700$ local pickup/delivery in Southern California, and preference given to
not having to ship. 750$ plus packing and shipping fees. *

I'll include a newish B+M Eyc T senso plus dyno light and the Brooks saddle
for an additional 100$ (the brooks has my name engraved in the back edge. i
can leave it, or sand it off).

i think it depends on your intent. it probably wont appreciate much in
value, or be worth putting too much work into it. But if its just for
getting around, 90$ is hard to beat. Univega had some nice mixtes with the

looks better and is more structurally solid. id be inclined to find one of
those if i was looking for a mixte.

This is exciting. I have a 650b Atlantis on order. My semi secret plan (I'm
aware it's somewhat apocryphal) was to get a disc fork made for it down the

the change is dumb. Right now that seems about as close to dream bike as I can
get.

I've been hesitant to consider frame modifications on the Atlantis that I don't
even have yet, but I'd love to see pics of the disclantis. Might push me over

[RBW] FS: 54cm Hunqapillar

2017-11-21 Thread drew
i got a lot of inquiries from the teaser hunq post, so i figure ill just
post this in hopes of answering more questions ahead of time.

54cm (fits like a 56-57cm) 700c/29er great condition. Circa 2015. I am the
original owner. Used primarily for a couple long tours and some overnight
stuff. never a daily rider. always kept inside except on tour. low miles,
framesavered and generally babied. Was/is my nice bike.

No dents or dings or rust. a couple of very small paint chips that have
been touched up with matching paint from waterford. a couple of shellack
drips here and there.

Willing to sell in a few ways.

*Option 1:* frame, fork, fsa headset, phil wood BB (has a couple hundred
miles on it)- 1500$ plus shipping

*Option 2:* frame, fork, fsa headset, phil wood BB, sugino xd crank,
xt/velocity dyad wheelset, Shimano 9spd cassette, WTB nanos-1800$ plus
shipping

*Option 3:* frame, fork, fsa headset, phil wood BB, sugino xd crank, XT
front derailler, XT/velocity dyad wheelset, SP/velocity atlas dyno wheel,
Schwalbe marathon supreme 50mm tire set, WTB nano 2.1 tire set, SKS silver
fenders with sackville fender flaps-2100$ plus shipping

*Option 4: *pick your parts and we will talk over a price

(saddle/seatpost/brakes/cockpit/pedals/rear der/rack/light. not included. i
need them for the next thing.)

Im in los angeles and would favor a local sale over having to ship, but i
will ship if you are ok paying packing and shipping costs. also, if you are
close, feel free to come ride it.

If youre wondering about how this fits in with the newer 650b hunqs, i
don't really know. i think there are only a few of those out in the world
since riv cut off waterford orders. this geo chart may give you some clues
though.

This is really cool Clayton. Your makeriness is admirable. I've been watching

[RBW] Hunqapillar

2017-11-12 Thread drew
We have one of each. I have a hunq, my wife has a Clem.
Tt and chainstays do make them feel quite different. If you were planning on
setting up the hunqapillar as a fully upright bike and using it for casual
riding, I think they'd be pretty similar. I have drops on the hunqapillar and
it feels like you can dig in and go pretty fast when you need to. The Clem
sorta resists that temptation.
When I got the hunq, I thought "wow this is like a Cadillac". Eats up bumps and
rides super smooth, but isn't very spritely. Then we got the Clem and the hunq
feels like a road bike in comparison.
Both are excellent bikes. Especially for hauling stuff around. I actually think
the hunq is more fun with a load. In terms of stoutness, they feel very
similar. The Clem may be a little burlier even, but I can't imagine anyone
wanting a tougher bike than either of these.
My wife, who is not a strong biker, rode the Clem on a mile or so of some
accidental easy single track and loved it. It was her first semi MTB experience
and she was very impressed with how the Clem helped her do what she was
initially sort of afraid to. That ride really could've ended in a big fight,
some serious blame and deep skepticism about trusting my sense of direction on
future rides. I'm very grateful Clem made it a positive experience.

2017-11-05 Thread drew
Late to this and not familiar with any snow riding. If you're willing to have
the canti bosses moved from 700c to 650b, have you thought at all about adding
disc brake mounts instead. That way you could, presumably use both wheel sizes
and have year round good braking. Again, I've only heard that discs are better
in winter, I have no experience with them.

Cool. I have 37 or 47 or something in that range. It lives out of state, so I
can't double check. Mine has passed through many hands of people on this list,
but still rides perfectly.

The number 2 is on all atlanti as a reference to the Bridgestone Atlantis, I
believe.

I did some reading when I got it. The chainstays are different. Slight s
curves, not straight. There was something about toyo being able to bend the
stays and also make them stronger. I can't remember what the tubing is. Kasei
maybe?

Thanks everyone. I'm researching all of these as I make my way through the

needs to be capable on poorly maintained dirt roads. I also, almost more

[RBW] OT: know anything about motorcycles?

2017-09-29 Thread drew
So a while back, i bought some property in the mountains and it came with 2
dirt bikes. They aren't street legal, or attractive, or very high end.
We've spent the last year semi renovating the cabin, clearing the land of
years of brush pile up, but we've finally gotten to the point where we are
starting to try to go through some of the stuff in the garage. I have no
use for 2 non street worthy, ugly yamahas, but after a little research, it
looks like i can get about 3500$ for the pair.

after thinking about it, i think a (single) motorcycle would be useful and
fun to have up there. im trying to figure out what that type of thing would
be and, since ive never had any interest in motorcycles, the internet info
is overwhelming. i know some of you guys ride all types of bikes, so im
hoping to get some direction.

here is what i'm thinking
-3500$ or less
-good on roads and dirt roads. not interested in jumps or anything crazy,
but it will have to be able to go off pavement comfortably
-reliable/durable/parts easily found and cheap.
-rivish... weird to say, but if anyone, you'll know what i mean. uniquely
pretty, versatile, not overly mechanically complex, able to carry a small
load and do more than one thing well

So far i've been looking at late 70's/early 80's off road yamahas and
hondas.

Anyone have any online resources, makes/models/years that would work,
thoughts, ideas etc.

First,
I made the change to dynamo lighting a couple of years ago and it has been a
complete game changer. I think you'll love it.
I now have 2 sp hubbed wheels and love them. Never tried the Schmidt, but I
can't imagine a wild advantage.
And finally, I'd put in a plug for the sinewave beacon. It's expensive, but if
you ever think you'll want to charge devices, you'll pay more for a separate
light and charger and it won't work as well. So far mine has been excellent and
handsome.
I have that on my expensive touring bike and I have the lumotec eyec t senso on

These look s good. I keep thinking I should buy a cheviot or one of these
to store for when I'm too old to swing a leg over a top tube. I feel like
Rivendell, or humans, or both will be gone by thenso it'd be a gamble.

Questions:
These are all 650b?
What's the reasoning for the horizontal dropouts?

never had one though.

I also like the shimano's on paul mounts. i could be wrong but i think
thats the only way to get good quality indexed thumb shifting with new
parts. that being said, that one model of suntour thumb shifter is the
prettiest and best feeling thumb shifter ever. if i see them at a decent
price, i always buy them.

Ok. Somewhat related question. When I see people's bike packing setups,
Especially the ones without panniers, where is the food being kept? Or are
people just eating protein bars and stuff for dinner?
I always bring food to make, since that's one of the most fun parts about
camping to me. But real food and a way to cook it takes up space fast.

Here is mine with a load for a couple of nights. probably more than
actually needed, but it had food and cooking gear for 2 days. rear has
sleeping pad, tent and tools. front has a soft cooler and small items in
the basket. front panniers hold the sleeping bag, clothes, cooking stuff. i
basically used the same set up for tours that last a week or longer. i
havent quite figured out how to pack for a s240 yet.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne vs A. Homer Hilsen

2017-08-12 Thread drew
Former Sam owner. It can do everything you intend to do with it. In the 2 top
tube version, it rode a lot like my 83 specialized expedition touring bike. I
easily was able to fit 50mm tires, and with Paul racers it stopped as well as
any of my canti bikes. I don't know if the clearances are maybe a bit tighter
on an ahh. I think of the 2 as basically the same but one is made in the USA
and slightly more classic looks. Can't go wrong either way. As someone willing
to wait the 8 months for an Atlantis, I understand the desire for made in the
USA and classic looks though.

[RBW] Re: why so many joe's up for sale?

2017-08-03 Thread drew
I think we live in a time where many other companies are now making
gravel/tour/adventurey bikes. Competetion in that niche is high, as is the rate
of shiny new things being shown to people.
I hear you on the sluggish feel. I sometimes feel that on my hunqapillar. Then
I load it up, or take it off road, or ride without people to compare myself to,
and it feels perfect. I think it was made for those scenarios.

[RBW] Hunqapillar or Appaloosa?

2017-08-01 Thread drew
I believe that the Appaloosa started as a middle ground between hunq and
hillborne, but by the time it was made it had been made burlier and lies
between a hunq and an Atlantis. At least that's my recollection of the
chronology.

I have a hunq, which will soon be traded for an Atlantis. It is a great bike.
Best I've ever owned.

I've come to think of rivendell as a line of do-it-all bikes. There is a lot of
overlap between models and the bikes do not excel at any one specific thing,
other than ride quality, comfort and beauty. I mean this in the most positive
way. I think that even a hilsen with big tires could do 99% of what most people
use their hunqapillars for.
So I guess what I mean is that, if you want a mountain bike or a racing bike, I
wouldn't get a rivendell. You'd be missing out on what those bikes offer in
their specialty and missing out on what a riv offers outside of that specialty.

I would assume that they are functionally equivalent. So I would make my choice
based on handlebars and wheel size.
I am a medium sized guy and have found my one complaint about the hunqapillar
to be 29er tires on a medium sized bike. I could run a small 700c tire on the
bike, but that would feel sacrilegious to me.
As far as handlebars go, I don't know that id want to try to run drops on the
Appaloosa. I know people do it and like it, but that bike was designed for
upright bars. The hunq does drops just fine. In the opposite way, I had a
hillborne that I felt was too short in the top tube for upright bars.

Lastly, If like me, you have more idealistic views of your riding than actual,
id recommend rectifying the two before purchasing. I thought I would be doing
lots of off road riding and touring... I wish that was true. In actuality, in
Los Angeles, 75% of my riding is on roads.
