Eric, the b&w pics are wonderful. So cool to be able to develop and print yourself. Several decades back I took a photography class which covered this process and other aspects of photography. It really helped me understand the process and learn a few things. My biggest takeaways I still retain are the supreme importance of lighting. Secondarily, composition was a key variable I learned to appreciate. Paul in Dallas -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Admissions of Things You Ought to Have Known But Did Not: A Thread
I didn't know off the top of my head the kilogram to pounds so looked it up and knew he was in trouble on the weight difference guess immediately b4 I read Leah's reply. Yeah, decades ago I learned that lesson (guessing lady's weight) the hard way. If a tire shows inflation range from say 50 to 80 psi, I just split the difference (65psi) in that caseand start there to see how it feels riding and adjust accordingly. Being 5 pounds heavier than Steve's weight I particularly need a few more psi's on supple tires on the rear tire or it feels too squirmy. I dont mind pumping air in tires so I play around with psi's until I get it right for me. I agree, Bicycle Belle Ding Ding threads are a fun read. Masmojo, looking at your GPS ride map I see we ride many of the same routes. I often ride along the Renner Road trail to the little forest area at Plano Rd and Renner. My wife tells me that land was donated by the Hunt 'oil' family. It's a wonderful area, so glad they preserved it from development! I was noticing the Vee tires you have on your bike. You like them? [RBW] Act of Thoughtfulness
About once I month I cycle about 10 miles each way up north of me to help an elderly friend. On a particularly busy stretch of roadwith a 40mph speed limit (but most do at least 50)the few cyclists that pass that way get upon the sidewalk for about a quarter of a mile to avoid risking life and limb. One fairly large upheaval in the sidewalk is frustrating and it helps to cross it slowly to avoid a jolt or possibly damage to the front wheel. It must have been a fellow cyclist that kindly came up with this solution shown in the pic. That person's thoughtfulness impressed me and I wanted to share it. I crossed that way today and snapped the pic. A couple months back I left a note saying thanks. I hope the mini ramp builder saw the note. [RBW] Thinking about cycling for me in the future....
Well here's another Paul adding a response. I relate to a lot of what has been shared and appreciate many of the thoughtful responses. Also, I'm another cyclist getting up there in years beginning about age 35 with my first good bike. It's hard to get my mind around it but I am about 3 years ahead of original poster Paul so this is the year the big Seven Zero arrives in the B-day column for me. But I feel at least 10 or15 years younger than that so that's a blessing. Dallas, TX and the surrounding suburbs have grown and continue to grow in population and traffic tremendously. I share the same concerns in riding my bike(s) out there that many have expressed. The seemingly frantic rush most drivers seem to be in along with the cell phone use is a scary combo indeed. Helmet, mirror attached, riding very defensively, waiting to see if there is a red light or stop sign runner b4 proceeding are all part of my riding strategy. I stick to slower speed limit residential streets when not on a pathand know the area to get around pretty well. Many of my errands are done via bike. As to sidewalks if it seems a car is crowding me or being impatient I don't hesitate to get up on it. Like Leah, I'm courteous to walkers and stop and defer to them but rarely encounter walkers. I've encountered no irritation with that and most likely happiness with the driver that I got out of their way. When deemed safe I get back on the street. I like what Patrick M said about a little prayer at the beginning of a ride. Cycling means enough to me to take the known risks. I could see in the future giving it upbecause of physical limitations as I get older or suffering a pretty severe bike accident might put me off it. The idea of meeting my demise when riding occurs to me occasionally but also the idea of going out doing something I love is not off putting. I'm one that is actually looking forward to the next life. I hope there are bicycles there. (The good place not the other place.) That demise would be preferable to sitting on my sofa eating ice cream and kicking off with a heart attack or stroke. But then again I do like ice cream hmmm? I better cycle tomorrow to burn calories to justify Saturday night ice cream. At any rate OP Paul all the best with your decision regarding your cycling future. Thanks for bringing up an interesting topic. Safe riding to you all.The Riv Bike list rocks! Paul in Dallas,TX When one gets old do they get more long winded? [RBW] Law professor, Riv Rider
Interesting comments. Even with the diversity of backgrounds, life experiences, viewpoints, philosophies, sexes, and agesit's great to see the commonality we find over cycling and particular types of bicycles. Even though I might have different views in some areas from list participants I've learned to respect others and their differing views and hopefully learn something in getting to know them. Life is very complex in my view and we all are works in progress. None of us have all the answers do we? I think we're mostly all trying to figure 'life' out and make sense of the good, the bad and the ugly of it, the temporary aspect of it, the truth of it all and what's possibly next after it ends.A lifelong pursuit indeed! I think every life is of tremendous value and worthy of respect and deserving of living a life of freedom and dignity. Alas it's not a perfect world but we can all strive to do better especially how we treat others. We just don't know what trials and tribulations have shaped and impacted others lives. Of course we are creatures with emotions and those emotions can be difficult to keep in check at times. Those times when my emotions get the best of me and my words I find apologies and forgiveness go a long way. I like the idea of making a supreme effort to live at peace with all even though easier said than done Well, mercy, I got a bit carried away and verbose. A good long bike ride sure helps sort out my thoughts. Peace out.Paul in Dallas -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] A Bicycle Adventure Story
This reminds us me of a book from 1969by Fred Bauer called 'How Many Hills to Hillsboro?' I see the book listed on ebay. I read it years and years ago.It was one of the books that inspired me to try bicycle touring. It's about a family of 5 , the Bauer family from New Jersey, the parents in their early 30's,with 3 kids, 13, 11, and 3 years old. They decided to spend a summer vacation cycling across the USA. They started in New York City and made it about 2000 miles to Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Dad was carrying the 3 year old in a child seat. They were not seasoned cyclists. They rode 4 new Schwinn 5 speeds of that time and were overall ill equipped from what I recall but just persisted and kept pedaling for about 8 weeks averaging 45 miles per day. At the end they ran out of time and needed to get back home. At any rate what an adventure for that family! It would be interesting to hear the children's recollections of that eventful summer vacation. [RBW] Tires for Clementine
I'm in the market for a set of 650b / 27.5 tires also . I'm considering these Maxxis Refuse , size 27.5 x 2.0In a folding tire at 610 grams, not a terrible weight for a 2" wide tire and not too high on price at 42 bucks each. I've had good luck with other Maxxis tires.Shows double puncture protection on these Refuse. It reminds me of the tread on my 700x42 Continental Contact Speed tires that roll nice and have good flat resistance. My riding buddy and I have 2 pairs each. That's a great looking Clem! Those fenders may come in handy upon your return . I saw a news story a few days ago about grasshopper swarms around Vegas. [RBW] Vintage Expedition vs. AHH and Atlantis
I'm no help on comparing but can share that my 60cm 1983 Specialized Expedition proved to be a very worth tour bike loaded up with 'too much' gear, right around 70 lbs worth for 2 different month long tours of around 700 miles each. One was across Nevada in the summer on Hwy 50 and the other from just south of Denver across Wyoming to Yellowstone. The Expedition proved to be perform remarkably well. I'm not sure what more I could of asked of touring bike. No complaints at all. I did customize my Expedition a tad and had a modern XT drive train on it with 22 low in front and 34 in back to get me up all those mountain passes with a heavy load. I have very fond memories of those tours. I did a write up on cyclofiend site years ago about the mods of my Expedition. I miss that bike. As I have aged fatter tires up to a 42 or 44 wide with fenders would help smooth out rough roads if I sought another touring capable bike to tour again. A Homer would accommodate, right? I also had a 1986 Miyata 1000 for around 2 years, another terrific bike but never toured on it. I thought it rode great unloaded. I did ride my good friends recently acquired Homer a short distance , what a stunner! Fun thread to bring up good memories. Perhaps I should plan another and make new 'old guy' tour memories. [RBW] Don't Miss Sights Around Las Vegas
It looks like I will be in the Las Vegas, NV area the week of May 20th. This will be my first trip to the area other than a brief layover at the airport years and years ago. I'm not sure I will get any riding in as I will be with an elderly gentleman, although some might say I am about at the elderly stage myself. I guess that's a matter of perspective but he's 25 years older than me. Ha! I met this gentleman via cycling. I'm sure he would love to ride if he could but I fear for his balance on a 2 wheeler. Perhaps I will rent a bike and try for a short ride while he has dinner with his friend. Our hotel is near the Boulder area so I do plan on seeing the dam. I'm not really interested in casino gambling aspect but I'm sure there are some cool areas to visit within an hour or two of the area. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. [RBW] RTP-like econo options: opinions wanted
I have the Power Blocks, the Maxxis 'Drop the Hammer' DTHs and also the standard RTPs. The standard RTPs are right at 450g. The Power Blocks and DTHs are about 100 g's heavier at about 550 each. For my mainly street riding I think the the PBs and DTHs are a tie. I too prefer the tread on the DTHs over the PB's. Not sure why , they both seem to roll about the same to me. Both are folding tires and mounted easily for me. My DTHs are the black sidewall and I don't particularly care for the bold yellow lettering on the side but they roll very well for me and very few flats if any on them and since I have multiple 26'ers I can't justify running RTPs on all. The RTPs are definitely in a different and higher category. Why get an e-bike when you can get Rene Herse tires for much less, well a little less. Ha! Just kidding. I think I'd still be slow on an e-bike. I would be interested in hearing of other 26 tires that are in or below that 550g weight class. Gosh, I sure use 'about' a lot, but I'm not about to change as it requires being more specific. I am about to sign off here though. Paul in Dallas PS, Not 26" but I installed a pair of 700x42 Soma Vitesse XL a few days ago on my Schwinn Passage. Found them pretty cheap on Ebay. They roll super fine, seem quick. 385g each. Dang their sidewalls are thin. Will be interesting to see how they hold up. I need to check Soma for 26" offerings. [RBW] Not a Riv but Heavily Influenced by Riv
A good Sunday morning to all. I had a Riv but I do not have one now. I bought one 5 years from their beginning in 1999, a custom road model in a beautiful blue with contrasting white head tube. I didn't know much at all about bike mechanics at the time and after gathering the parts paid a mechanic to build it up. Since then I've accumulated the tools and learned to completely disassemble a bike and build it back up to my preferences, a process I thoroughly enjoy. I enjoyed it a lot for a number of years before regretfully selling it. I still read most everything from Riv as well as this list and have learned much over those 20 years since 1999. After a phase of 'lighter and faster' attempts with a multitude of bikes I decided practical, comfortable and more stable bikes were my preference. Bikes like Riv offers and of course lugged steel is preferred. The aesthetic as well as the ride of lugged steel just does it for me. I've had a good many bikes come and go in my stable over these 20 years and some non lugged ones ride very nicely. However when stopping along the ride and looking at my bike, perhaps snapping a pic, the aesthetics come into play and I Iove the look of a nicely crafted lugged steel frame. I like this list and the overall vibe, civility, helpfulness, even kindness this list shows nearly all the time with very few exceptions. I hope a Riv is in my not too distant future, a new Atlantis frame when budget allows. We will see. In the meantime here is a pic of my attempt at a comfortable and stable Riv like machine, a 1986 Schwinn Passage which was a touring model not a lot different from a Schwinn Voyageur. Paul in Dallas If any make it to Dallas and schedules permit I'd be happy to take you on a bike tour of the downtown area. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Bikes = Likes
I was blown away on my first bike tour (and subsequent tours) by the kindness of strangers. Goodness, that was 15 years back for that first one. I think it was 52 or so days on the road and during that time I only had one person being rude about sharing the road. There were quite a few occurrences of people being friendly, helpful, inquisitive, and a few just astoundingly kind and generous. I theorize that many would like to get out and transport themselves by there own power but for a multitude of reasons haven't done so. As long as we obey the rules of the road I think we can inspire others to get out there. [RBW] Bikelessness
Abcyclehank wrote, "Leah, Even your personal bicycle 🚲 tragedies are a joy to read for us in your brilliant prose. " I agree with Ryan. It's fun to read your posts with all sorts of twists and turns and a different perspective to make them interesting. Perhaps novelist could be a future pursuit. Something about your writing reminds me of Grant's writing. Ha! Perhaps the influence of riding a 'magical' Riv bike factors in. The idea of a mobile bike mechanic is not a bad idea and also asking the owner of the shop to repair just the flat sooner. It might pay dividends to seek out a local cycling club and occasionally participate. If you get to know some of them I expect a few with wrenching skills would be happy to assist on minor fixes occasionally. I know I find it satisfying to help out a fellow cyclist to get rolling again. I hope it works out soon so you all can get pedaling again. [RBW] Perplexities regarding flat tires
Learning to change out an inner tube after flatting is definitely a high value skill to learn for any cyclist I think. That's probably one of the main things that would be included in a basic bike maintenance class. A bit of practice after learning the basics should serve you well. There was a first time for all of us in learning how change out a flatted tube and a learning curve to get proficient at it. At the beginning I would get frustrated trying to remove and replace the rear wheel in the frame until someone showed me an easier way. I also ruined a number of new tubes by rushing and not taking the time to make sure the tube was completely inside the tire and a part of it not being pinched between the rim and tire bead. The sudden and very loud pop as well as $5 to $10 down the drain via a ruined tube will teach one to check thoroughly. If you're boys continue in cycling this would be a good skill for them to learn as well. Perhaps learn as a family? Treat it like a puzzle. What caused this blasted flat? Let's figure it out together. A few mystery flats of mine turned out to be issues in the base of valve area that had been separated a bit. It would hold air for a time but with slight movement of the stem begin leaking. I've also had the cursed tiny wires the semi truck cast off when their retreaded tires come apart and litter the roadways. Even tires with flat protection built into the tread are not immune from those tiny devils especially when touring. The last few years most of my flats were caused by seam separation of the tube an obvious manufacturing defect. I've had a least 3 and a friend had one last week from seam separation. I guess we got a defective batch of tubes. Sometimes I resort to putting the tubes in bathtub water to isolate the leak. I've found it also helps when first installing a tube to always orient the tire the same way on the rim every time. Then after removing a flatted tube and determining the leak location you can know where to check the tire for the source of the puncture if it was a puncture. Of course check both the outside and inside of the tire. Goodness, this got long. I hope a bit of it helps. [RBW] Bike tour around Idaho, ideas?
I recall how beautiful the ride from Kooskia, ID and then up along the Lochsa and Clearwater Rivers to Lolo Pass and then down into Missoula, MT. on Highway 12. Of course there is plenty of climbing but the remarkable beauty was worth it. This was just a part of a couple months tour that stands out among the best memories of that trip. Now just before that riding out of Lewiston, ID to Winchester along the Winchester grade on the main road, that's a different memory. On a hot summer day that incline seemed to go on forever and kicked my butte. Ha! There was a cafe in Winchester that had great pie however that replenished the reserves. I think I ate 4 slices. [RBW] How do you track your mileage?
I use the Endomondo app on my phone. It's okay for the most part, however I get frustrated when the timer keeps running when I am stopped for a few minutes. I am not sure why that happens sometimes and sometimes not. Dang it, when I know I have averaged 11 or 12 miles per hour I do not like it showing I only averaged 9 mph. Ha! When you're tearing it up that way you want the proof. On a few bikes I also have basic cycle computer , cyclometer or whatever the correct term is these days. [RBW] Hats Off To...
I reside in an urban setting in the Dallas Texas area. I love running errands on my bike. My 'errand' bike is a 90 Rockhopper with fat street tires and the large Wald basket from RivBike on the rear strapped to a Blackburn rack. I get in a good portion of my annual riding miles running errands. It's crazy how much I have often loaded on it. Those stretch nets like I bought from Rivbike have helped a lot to keep from losing anything. I sometimes use 3 of them to make sure the load is secure. I have even brought complete bikes home via bike from up to 20 miles away, most closer than that however. I think that last vintage Trek I brought home was only 15 miles each way. Ha! I imagine some folks do a double take and think I'm an old homeless guy when I have a heavy load. I have thought if I delayed very long at an intersection I would start getting cash donations from passing drivers. Hmmm! Fortunately there are quite a few mostly safe routes about the area usually via less travel residential streets. The number of bike paths in the area is growing and there are plans in place for more. Years ago I had about given up on Dallas improving in that aspect but finally some of the city leaders seem to 'get it' about the benefits of encouraging cycling in the area. If I do have to cross an area with busy and fast traffic I have no qualms about getting up on the sidewalk. On most rides I usually grab several plastic sacks and stuff in my pockets. If I am not on my 'errand' bike & need to carry smallish items I hang the sacks on the handlebar. Paul ' not homeless' in Dallas 'Errand biking rocks! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Definitely on the ice cream! Often ice cream is the reward or sometimes the reason for a ride. Over Saturday and Sunday I got in 60 miles over the two days and didn't feel one bit of guilt for having ice cream at the end. Deacon Patrick, I am another that enjoys reading of your Colorado adventures and seeing the great pics. I had a week long Colorado adventure myself early this month. Best part was sharing it with 2 Grandsons. Bike riding with both was included. In the spring I also experienced the ' not fun whatsoever' cracked or injured rib from falling over at low speed on my bike and my bars giving me a good smack in the ribs.
