Thank you both for the link and the summary. So I guess we have to trust the system works, andproduct version numbers aren't sufficient? How much of a lag is there between the time the patch is posted on the company site and the time that RedHat backports the code? The speed that worms propagate nowadays is scary and even a couple of days lag might be a big problem. Does apt use the same backport technique? Or are you always getting the latest/greatest/potentially incompatible version of the software by using this instead? If so, using apt on a production system would probably be a bad idea? Also the Michael who can be terse to a fault. It is safe to apply Redhat updates, it is a good idea to apply Redhat updates. Redhat is very conservative about not breaking things, their updates are only bug fixes, and mostly only really important bugs get updates. So what does that have to do with anything? Well, the only way Redhat updates can be so safe is that they don't add features, because features can and do break things. So what Redhat does is "backport" fixes from the current version to the current Redhat version, just fixing the bug and not changing anything else. -kb -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

Re: up2date or apt?
I use to use Debian for a gw that I had at my house and one in the office. Apt is the package manager of choice for that OS and they have a curses frontend called dselect. And I loved it! Considerably easier than rpm's. You selected a package to install, it took care of all the dependency's (notifying you first of course). I didn't realize it was available for RH! I'll have to look into that. Not evaluating apt for RH, I'd still have to vote apt. I need to do more research. That and the ability to DL rpms once and install them on different machines at different times. I can also simply not promote a problematic upgrade until I know it works. We are not a great big shop but with 5 linux boxes in the office and 48 in the field that are not accessible it gets unwieldy if something get hosed. Vince, I use up2date on a regular basis to keep several systems up to date. The features you mention, updating critical parts and apps, while maintaining dependencies are all available through up2date. I'm not familiar with apt, but one feature I found nice is the web interface to up2date. If the RHN daemon is running on the RH server, you can go to rhn.redhat.com and schedule updates, and reboots (be careful with your login info), without doing anything on the server. No. I don't expect that Red Hat will ever support a rawhide channel since the operations are just too dangerous. It's quite easy to totally shoot yourself in the foot since a simple package upgrade from rawhide could be very global - imagine if it required a new glibc, or if you pointed a 7.1 system at the rawhide channel. > Can I activate as Rawhide channel on RH9? I don't know of a better way given Rawhide's inherent instability and frequent updates. Rawhide is supposed to be for people who know what they're doing and can live on the bleeding edge and deal with a totally screwed system. It's not yet even beta quality. I don't think you downloaded the packages for your distribution. There are different packages for each distribution. You just happen to be on the keep it short list, there are those who say that if the previous replies are not included then they have to read the thread to keep up. Here I disagree. Good netiquette is to trim and keep the necessary or useful text (doesn't say short, says useful) since many people do pay for traffic so the more you type the more they pay. That, and the fact that each word you keep is multiplied by 10,000 or so since it goes to every member on this list... so there is a big impact when you keep 50 lines. I know that there are those who say "keep everything" but I generally believe this is rude, suffers from short-term memory loss or lack of attention, and shows a large lack of consideration for other people. -- Rodolfo J. RE: up2date
A new release and a new version are the same thing in my own (feeble?) mind. Up2date should update to the most current version of the programs RedHat has available for any of its versions. I simply use "up2date -u" (read the up2date man page; very useful. I also set the up2date configuration to also update the kernel, if there's a kernel update available. As an alternative, you could try apt-get (or the apt/synaptic combination, if you're using a gui). Hope this helps. Re: up2date SSL error?
If you go to the RH site and MANUALLY download the latest "New up2date with updated SSL certificate authority file" patch (You can't use up2date to do this due to the SSL error), the problem should be resolved. I did this yesterday and everything now downloads fine for me. The patch was posted on 8/29. -Jim Wartnick -Original Message- Message: 51 Date: Wed, 03 Sep 2003 08:08:17 -0400 From: Hugh Taylor <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: up2date SSL error? Well... most of the Linux software in common use has been examined pretty thoroughly by developers and users of all distros. The community seems to be very diligent in uncovering potential sources of security or privacy issues. But since presumably up2date was developed specifically by and for RH as opposed to the community at large, and since the software is used explicitly to communicate with RH, I thought it was worth asking about it specifically. I'm not asking in an accusing way at all; I don't think RH is out to spy on anybody, only that the potential may there for others to abuse their technology. --Lee -- What The...? http://www.what-the.com -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

Is the source code available for these tools, and has it been scrutinized for any privacy or security issues? Or is this something proprietary to RH? I use it to remotely manage several servers. I can make sure that critical updates are handled in a timely fashion - even when on vacation. As far as the skipped packages - some people don't want the latest kernels as soon as they come out - I commend Red Hat for defaulting to NOT install the latest and greatest when it comes to the kernel (as we saw problems two kernels ago). By the way, I was disgruntled at the "pay 60.00 for basic support" to Red Hat like many were - until I found out that I now have preferred download status for new ISO's, updates, etc. It's $60! Re: Up2date -f boots to "grub>". Back Online!
Thanks a bunch Michael... looking at your reply sent me to: info grub realizing I had no idea how the boot loader works. I tried the commands you suggested but didn't get it right - grub.conf wasn't found even though a listed it in the /boot/grub directory. (The following are some significant lines from my current grub.conf root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-18.7 ro root=/dev/hda1 initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.20-18.7.img) Then as you further suggested, I ran rawrite from diskette and tried a recover boot from the cd. This didn't seem to do me much good as it mounted the filesystem and a recovery partition - but I couldn't access my precious data (weeks of servlet development not backed up). The really good news is that despite my imagining days of research on grub before being able to patch the system together, on reboot the grub window menu appeared! ... and booted as normal ...Whew! what luck. So it's a full backup night tonight along with a GRUB familiarization read. I don't know what caused the problem though - nor how the boot to recovery resolved it. I'd be interested in any of your thoughts on this - including suggestions on what I should do to avoid similar experiences in the future. You loaded the kernel without parameters, in particular without specifying the root partition. Additionally, dev=09:02 is RAID device /dev/md2. If you type "help" at the GRUB command-prompt you get good docs on the command set. "help SOMECOMMANDHERE" works, too. For instance, grub> find /boot/initrd-2.4.18-17.7x would find your initrd, grub> find /boot/grub/grub.conf would find your GRUB config file. If it still exists, you could load it with (replace hd?,? appropriately) grub> configfile (hd?,?/boot/grub/grub.conf Your problem would be fixed quickly by booting first CD in rescue mode, checking your grub.conf and re-installing GRUB with the "grub-install" command. - -- -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/EV0/0iMVcrivHFQRAthVAJ9+V9oVBWuik6COO2PBbuFJeUOW8ACfYpml xgQtcAHVj8o/5D+KWLDWtYo= =HNTL -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

George... I didn't get a choice of kernels on the kernel / prompt. Instead I was prompted with partition/directory names such as usr tmp var boot etc. Therefore I thought I'd take a chance on a vmlinuz file in boot. Regarding the ext2fs error, on first googling it appears to point to booting from the wrong partition or a hardware problem... I unsure of what my next step should be - concentrating on trying to salvage data (if possible) or trying to rollback to the system config before I ran up2date. Once again, any other suggestions from the list are much appreciated. /j-p. --- George Nicholls <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On Sun, 2003-07-13 at 12:33, john-paul delaney > wrote: > > Thanks George... Re: Up2date -f boots to "grub>" prompt!
Hello List.. I forgot to say that I hadn't rebooted the machine immediately after the update - some hours later (trying to tidy up) I had accidentally hit the power switch and it went down uncleanly, with the resulting boot to grub> Rebooting with a boot diskette gets me to the following: EXT2-fs: ide0(3,1): couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features. Invalid session number or type of track Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:01 Any idea on what "unsupported optional features" means? Is this a hardware or software related error? Advice greatly appreciated. /j-p. john-paul delaney <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I'm in trouble List After reading a previous message on simply upgrading the kernel with the up2date -f force switch. RE: Up2date issue?
Thanks Michael and everyone./.. I got the machine up and running.. Dl'ed the kernel via up2date and re-configured the lilo.conf file and ran lilo -v... It booted ( thank god) to the latest kernel.. I understand I can be a pain..( my wife agrees).. But there is no mistaking my appreciation to everyone in this list who is always ready to help.. And yes, I did remove one system so I can insert the other machine..:) Thanks jeff -Original Message- From: Michael Schwendt [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, July 11, 2003 4:54 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Up2date issue? -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 On Thu, 10 Jul 2003 18:39:10 -0600, Daryl Hunt wrote: > > Go, Jeffrey wrote: > > > Hi > > > > > > I ran up2date on my machine...and I wantd to dl and install the 2.4.20 > > > kernel on my 7.3 machine.. > > > But it keeps giving me the message" Update has skipped the packages you > > > checked" > > > Despite me going in to the site and making sure I have the packages > > > checked.. > > > > > > Any ideas? > > > > Yep, which packages are skipped has nothing to do with going to a > > 'site', whatever you mean by that. > > > > Do a 'man up2date'. > > > > The very first page tells you where configuration options are kept. > > > > Regards, > > Ed. > > I did a rebuild and tried to do the update. RE: Up2date issue?
Hi Ed I re-confired the up2date parameters to dl the kernel packages.. Now I am running into issue where it downloads the Kernel.2.4.20 and smp packages with no issues, but when it tries to dl the source file, I gte a fatal error saying I don't have enough space and it needs 58 MB of space n root directory. I do a df -k and I see it has close to 200 MB available...any ideas? Also, after doing the up2date, isnt a reboot supposed to boot into the new kernel? I am still seeing the old kernel upon reboot... Do I have to modify the Lilo.conf file? The default up2date configuration is to skip kernels. From the command line, add --force when doing kernels. I always update everything excluding the kernels, and do just a --force on the kernel last. I have no idea how it's done from the GUI - I don't do Linux GUIs. -- Ed Wilts, Mounds View, MN, USA mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Member #1, Red Hat Community Ambassador Program -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

If no why has my configuration elected to "skip" the installation of these in up2date? I've always run stock RH systems, to which I've added various compiled stuff from the net. I have always kept the RH provided portions of my stsem updated in the manner I mentioned, and have never had a problem doing so. YMMV. You could just leave off the -f until you are sure you want to update the kernel. I've never had a reason not to.
