How could it? It's just a package tool.

Depends on what package repositories you point apt-rpm at. If, for
instance, a repository contains a mirror of the updates.redhat.com
server, apt-get would get the same packages as found on that server.
If, however, the apt repositories defined in your "sources"
configuration files don't include a repository which contains Red
Hat's errata packages, you wouldn't get them. Or if you enable
repositories which contain packages with higher package versions, that
would override the packages found in other repositories.

Thank you both for the link and the summary.

So I guess we have to trust the system works, andproduct version numbers
aren't sufficient? How much of a lag is there between the time the
patch is posted on the company site and the time that RedHat backports
the code? The speed that worms propagate nowadays is scary and even
a couple of days lag might be a big problem.

Does apt use the same backport technique? Or are you always getting the
latest/greatest/potentially incompatible version of the software by using
this instead? If so, using apt on a production system would probably be
a bad idea?

Thanks again,

David

Also the Michael who can be terse to a fault.

It is safe to apply Redhat updates, it is a good idea to apply Redhat
updates. Redhat is very conservative about not breaking things, their
updates are only bug fixes, and mostly only really important bugs get
updates.

So what does that have to do with anything? Well, the only way Redhat
updates can be so safe is that they don't add features, because
features can and do break things.

So what Redhat does is "backport" fixes from the current version to
the current Redhat version, just fixing the bug and not changing
anything else.

Re: up2date or apt?

2003-10-01 Thread pottee
I use to use Debian for a gw that I had at my house and one in the office. Apt is the
package manager of choice for that OS and they have a curses frontend called dselect.
And I loved it! Considerably easier than rpm's. You selected a package to install,
it took care of all the dependency's (notifying you first of course). I didn't
realize it was available for RH! I'll have to look into that.

Not evaluating apt for RH, I'd still have to vote apt. I need to do more research.

Thanx,
Earl

For me, I really like the control I have by setting up my own apt
repository for our addon packages as well as those not at freshrpms.
That and the ability to DL rpms once and install them on different
machines at different times. I can also simply not promote a
problematic upgrade until I know it works. We are not a great big shop
but with 5 linux boxes in the office and 48 in the field that are not
accessible it gets unwieldy if something get hosed.

I am probably just a control freak, what can I say?

apt-get install xine is pretty cool

FWIW there is a gui client synaptic so some such thing I forget.

apt-cache search string is way cool too for locating packages.

Vince, I use up2date on a regular basis to keep several systems up to date.
The features you mention, updating critical parts and apps, while
maintaining
dependencies are all available through up2date.
I'm not familiar with apt, but one feature I found nice is the web interface
to
up2date. If the RHN daemon is running on the RH server, you can go to
rhn.redhat.com
and schedule updates, and reboots (be careful with your login info), without
doing
anything on the server.

Thanks

No. I don't expect that Red Hat will ever support a rawhide channel
since the operations are just too dangerous. It's quite easy to totally
shoot yourself in the foot since a simple package upgrade from rawhide
could be very global - imagine if it required a new glibc, or if you
pointed a 7.1 system at the rawhide channel.

I don't know of a better way given Rawhide's inherent instability and
frequent updates.

Rawhide is supposed to be for people who know what they're doing and can
live on the bleeding edge and deal with a totally screwed system. It's
not yet even beta quality. If you make it too easy for people to use,
we'll have to suffer the consequences as people start firing before
aiming.

also to make sure you get the mailing from rhn that are relevant to your
systems.

The usual approach to resolving this is to download both up2date and
up2date-gnome and the do:
# rpm -Uvh up2date*.rpm

You have to download all of the files (I think that there were three,
up2date, up2date-gnome, and up2date-source or something like that) and
then you have to run

rpm -Uvh up2date*.rpm

Then RPM will auto-resolve the dependencies and install.

I think I'm going to setup a cronjob to email this list every 3 hours
with that title and the url. This is getting ridiculous. People, READ
THE ARCHIVES. Visit the website. It's plastered everywhere. Sheesh.

Ok, I'm done now.

True. But since he was using the -d, I was assuming that he just wanted to
download the rpms and install them himself. To do that, I believe that you
would have to use the -u and the -d otherwise it would automatically install.

Yes, I do see your point. Besides, I'll admit that it bothers me more when
people do things out of ignorance or laziness; if you have made a conscious
choice to post this way, I will probably ignore some of your posts (too
lazy to go looking through all the text for your comments), but I won't get
mad at you.

You just happen to be on the keep it short list, there are those who say

Here I disagree. Good netiquette is to trim and keep the necessary or
useful text (doesn't say short, says useful) since many people do pay for
traffic so the more you type the more they pay. That, and the fact that
each word you keep is multiplied by 10,000 or so since it goes to every
member on this list... so there is a big impact when you keep 50 lines.

I know that there are those who say "keep everything" but I generally
believe this is rude, suffers from short-term memory loss or lack of
attention, and shows a large lack of consideration for other people.

Thanks all for your helpful replies. What I initially did was 'up2date -d
*' thinking that it will download everything that is not up to date. Silly
me. I overlooked the -u option, as it gave me the impression of
instructing up2date to download everything, even programs that I don't
have.

If you are trying to get ALL the updates for your system you should use the
-u along with your -d. -d only downloads what you specifically tell it to
download. So unless you aren't telling us what you typed, from what you
said here, you only typed 'up2date -d httpd'. If you just want the httpd
and openssl then type 'up2date -du httpd openssl'. Also, the -d function
tells it to just download it and not install it.

openssl-0.9.7a-5.i686, yet my machine is only running openssl-0.9.7a-2.
Can anyone tell me whether the up2date only updates new releases of a
software or new versions of a software, or both?
Thanks,

I am not accusing you of changing anything, I am suggesting that you do not

Please keep only the parts of the earlier message which are important for

Why not a "up2date -u" which will download _and_ update the packages in one
step?

Can anyone tell me whether the up2date only updates new releases of a

Both. However, it probably does not know accurately what you have
installed. Issue a "up2date -p" command (p for profile, I think) and your
computer will tell RHN exactly what packages are installed so that you get
notified of all applicable downloads.

up2date -d should download anything shown by up2date -l.

Just for grins and giggles, try up2date -p to update the package list with
rhn, then try the up2date -l to see what packages are available. Then try
up2date --dry-run to see what all is actually going to be downloaded, then
try up2date -d to see if it is all actually downloaded.

And, as always, man up2date is your friend. :)

RE: up2date

2003-09-04 Thread IT
A new release and a new version are the same thing in my own (feeble?) mind.
Up2date should update to the most current version of the programs RedHat has
available for any of its versions. I simply use "up2date -u" (read the
up2date man page; very useful. I also set the up2date configuration to also
update the kernel, if there's a kernel update available.

As an alternative, you could try apt-get (or the apt/synaptic combination,
if you're using a gui).

Hope this helps.

If you go to the RH site and MANUALLY download the latest "New up2date with updated SSL
certificate authority file" patch (You can't use up2date to do this due to the SSL
error),
the problem should be resolved. I did this yesterday and everything now downloads fine

The patch was posted on 8/29.

RE: up2date

2003-08-29 Thread Kevin Passey
Have you all seen this.

I got it from redhat about an hour ago.

The certificate used by up2date and rhn_register to communicate with the
Red Hat Network reached its end of life on August 28th 2003. Users
attempting to connect to Red Hat Network will see SSL connection or
certificate verification failures.

New versions of the up2date and rhn_register clients are now available
which are required for continued access to Red Hat Network.

 * RHSA-2003:267 for Red Hat Linux:
   https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2003-267.html

 * RHSA-2003:268 for Red Hat Enterprise Linux:
   https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2003-268.html

New versions of the up2date client that contain the new certificate are
immediately available for download at:

https://rhn.redhat.com/help/latest-up2date.pxt

For users who would prefer to install the new certificate directly, it is
available at:

Hold down the ALT key while grabbing the window with your mouse. Move

I'm not sure what your up2date problem is, but you can always download
the updated kernel from any of the numerous Red Hat mirrors, and update
manually.

ncftpget
ftp://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/linux/redhat/updates/9/en/os/i386/kernel-2.4.20-19.9.i386.rpm
rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.20-19.9.i386.rpm

Once you've rebooted and confirmed everything works as expected...

rpm -q kernel (should respond with multiple kernel package versions)
rpm -e kernel-2.4.20-18.9 (or whatever the older version is)

Slim, but real. This is a general point, rather than one about
sendmail or even RedHat, but (if I may say so) you should suck it
and see on a non-prod box first. If you don't have that luxury,
perhaps you can upgrade sendmail at a time when an outage will
cause minimal impact - out of usual business hours, perhaps at the
weekend.

It's nice to keep your IT users on separate servers from
business users so they can be used as guinea pigs, if possible.

I have 8 production machines on 9 and 7.3 and always visit the RedHat

I've update kernels through this method many times and had no problems.

I've only had one problem, it stopped xinetd on one 7.3 box a few times.
I spoke to a RedHat Chief Instructor about this last week and he thinks
it was something else not related to rhnsd.

I also know that RedHat will setup a local server solution if you have a
lot of machines and don't like the huge bandwidth hit when updates are
downloaded automatically.

I'm fairly new to the redhat network and wondered if I could get some
guidence on whether most admins use the GUI to update packages or the
up2date program. Could I get some specific examples of the up2date
syntax typically used to update systems. BTW I use RH AS 2.1.

How do you handle issues like updating kernel stuff separate from just
nonkernel packages?

Does anyone use cron for automated updates?

Do you trust the up2date program enough to handle kernel updates
automaticly?

I have never run up2date but you can manually dl the rpms into a dir and
then update them manaully:

cd to dir where you dl'ed the rpms to

rpm -Fvh *.rpm #will update only those rpms that are installed.

Define "more than enough" since I usually tend to believe the computer and
not the user in a case like this. Post the output of "df -m" while you're
at it. Remember that your disk has to hold the package _and_ the installed

Also, are you trying to install the kernel src.rpm, or the kernel-source

These are both independent from selecting the packages to be installed on

Of course not, in theory, and as long as the average Linux user remains
as tech savvy and eagle-eyed as most are now. In practice, as Microsoft
proved, a huge percentage of people accept the "default" when installing
anything. So if a particular distro were to become widespread on
desktops, the potential is there for abuse because the average person
isn't going to necessarily know enough not to use the default.

OK, that's the kind of answer I was after... if up2date is not
proprietary to RH that's good. I'll have to have a look at the source
for grins. :)

Well... most of the Linux software in common use has been examined
pretty thoroughly by developers and users of all distros. The community
seems to be very diligent in uncovering potential sources of security or
privacy issues. But since presumably up2date was developed specifically
by and for RH as opposed to the community at large, and since the
software is used explicitly to communicate with RH, I thought it was
worth asking about it specifically. I'm not asking in an accusing way
at all; I don't think RH is out to spy on anybody, only that the
potential may there for others to abuse their technology.

It's known as open source. Microsoft-like domination can not exist.

This will tell you that up2date is licensed under the GPL. Feel free to
request the source. I expect it to be on your sources CD or you can use
up2date to pull the src rpm down.

Probably but we don't know to what detail by people outside of Red Hat.
By the same token, you don't know what level of scrutiny has been
performed on the rest of the packages.

Sure, anyone can do that on an individual basis, but I'm talking people
in corporate environments, and/or newbies who just want to install Linux
at home, and they want to use the default notification tool and
up2date. Is the source code available for these tools, and has it been
scrutinized for any privacy or security issues? Or is this something
proprietary to RH?

If it's an issue, I will start recommending some other avenue to clients
who are worried about it. If not, I'd like to be able to assure them
that it's not. I am an independent applications programmer and
therefore am usually regarded as a neutral source of information, so
clients often ask me about this stuff rather than, or in addition to,
their sysadmin.

Well, you can always use one of the other replacements for this, such as
apt4RPM, or YUM or something like that... Someone even wrote a nice GUI
interface to APT to make it easier -- it's called Synaptic. So, you're not
limited by the tools made available by your distro, you can (at least with
RPM-based distros) always use a different updater util... not to say that
Apt/Synaptic is 100% compatible with up2date, because it's not... but it's
close enough that if you don't try to go back and forth with them, it should
work fine for you.

Re: up2date icon problem

I actually found the answer to this if anyone is interested. Not why it
was doing strange things but how to get the button back. I right click
on the tool bar and select -> -> . After that I went to the redhat icon and selected
-> and this placed it back on my toolbar.
Maybe this will help someone else.

Jeez - wasn't this fixed yet? I had this problem on 8.0, but not on 9
(it's 9 btw, not 9.0).

The fix was indeed to remove it and re-start it from memory. I think
it's called rhn-applet-gui or just rhn-applet. Not sure - check the
archives or google it's bound to be in there as a lot of people had that
problem.

Re: Up2date -f boots to "grub>". Back Online!

2003-07-13 Thread John-Paul Delaney
Thanks a bunch Michael... looking at your reply sent me to:

info grub

realizing I had no idea how the boot loader works.

I tried the commands you suggested but didn't get it right - grub.conf wasn't found
even though a listed it in the /boot/grub directory.

(The following are some significant lines from my current grub.conf

root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-18.7 ro root=/dev/hda1
initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.20-18.7.img)

Then as you further suggested, I ran rawrite from diskette and tried a recover boot
from the cd. This didn't seem to do me much good as it mounted the filesystem and a
recovery partition - but I couldn't access my precious data (weeks of servlet
development not backed up).

The really good news is that despite my imagining days of research on grub before
being able to patch the system together, on reboot the grub window menu appeared! ...
and booted as normal ...Whew! what luck.

So it's a full backup night tonight along with a GRUB familiarization read.

I don't know what caused the problem though - nor how the boot to recovery resolved
it. I'd be interested in any of your thoughts on this - including suggestions on what
I should do to avoid similar experiences in the future.

Thanks Again & Regards
/j-p.

You loaded the kernel without parameters, in particular without
specifying the root partition. Additionally, dev=09:02 is
RAID device /dev/md2.

If you type "help" at the GRUB command-prompt you get good docs
on the command set. "help SOMECOMMANDHERE" works, too.

For instance,

 grub> find /boot/initrd-2.4.18-17.7x

would find your initrd,

 grub> find /boot/grub/grub.conf

would find your GRUB config file. If it still exists, you could load
it with (replace hd?,? appropriately)

 grub> configfile (hd?,?/boot/grub/grub.conf

Your problem would be fixed quickly by booting first CD in rescue
mode, checking your grub.conf and re-installing GRUB with the
"grub-install" command.

Re: Up2date -f boots to "grub>" prompt!

2003-07-13 Thread john-paul delaney
George...

I didn't get a choice of kernels on the

kernel /

prompt. Instead I was prompted with
partition/directory names such as usr tmp var boot
etc.

Therefore I thought I'd take a chance on a vmlinuz
file in boot.

Regarding the ext2fs error, on first googling it
appears to point to booting from the wrong partition
or a hardware problem... I unsure of what my next step
should be - concentrating on trying to salvage data
(if possible) or trying to rollback to the system
config before I ran up2date.

Once again, any other suggestions from the list are
much appreciated.

/j-p.

Re: Up2date -f boots to "grub>" prompt!

Hello List.. I forgot to say that I hadn't rebooted the machine immediately after the update - some hours later (trying to tidy up) I had accidentally hit the power switch and it went down uncleanly, with the resulting boot to grub>

Rebooting with a boot diskette gets me to the following:

EXT2-fs: ide0(3,1): couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features.
Invalid session number or type of track
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:01

Any idea on what "unsupported optional features" means?  Is this a hardware or software related error?

Advice greatly appreciated.

prompt.  I'm using rh 7.2.  I had upgraded the kernel previously from the redhat network website, and hoped for equally successful results this time.  Now I'm stuck, and mail's goin' to bounce I'm sure.

I'd be grateful for any help to get me out of this one.

thanks
/j-p.

RE: Up2date issue?

2003-07-12 Thread Go, Jeffrey
Thanks Michael and everyone./..

I got the machine up and running..
Dl'ed the kernel via up2date and re-configured the lilo.conf file and ran lilo -v...
It booted ( thank god) to the latest kernel..

I understand I can be a pain..( my wife agrees)..
But there is no mistaking my appreciation to everyone in this list who is always ready
to help..

And yes, I did remove one system so I can insert the other machine..:)

Thanks
jeff

This thread was opened by Jeffrey Go, so what is your particular
problem? What do you mean with "I did a rebuild"? For the Red Hat
Network Update Agent to work, you need a free slot in your account
at https://rhn.redhat.com -- else, upon registering your machine,
you would always see the error message that you don't have any
entitlements left. So, go there, log in and remove old and unused
systems to free up at least the single demo entitlement.

RE: Up2date issue?

2003-07-11 Thread Go, Jeffrey
Hi Ed

I re-confired the up2date parameters to dl the kernel packages..

Now I am running into issue where it downloads the
Kernel.2.4.20 and smp packages with no issues, but when it tries to dl the source
file, I gte a fatal error saying I don't have enough space and it needs 58 MB of space
n root directory. I do a df -k and I see it has close to 200 MB available...any ideas?

Also, after doing the up2date, isnt a reboot supposed to boot into the new kernel? I
am still seeing the old kernel upon reboot...
Do I have to modify the Lilo.conf file?

Thank you for you patience

jeff

The default up2date configuration is to skip kernels. From the command
line, add --force when doing kernels. I always update everything
excluding the kernels, and do just a --force on the kernel last.

I have no idea how it's done from the GUI - I don't do Linux GUIs.

Is this safe? Doesnt sound like it...We only have apache mysql and

(plus whatever defaults to a standard RH9 without GUI installation)

Also, what about updating the Kernel to 2.4x, does this mean I have to
reinstall/compile packages I have installed? If no why has my
configuration elected to "skip" the installation of these in up2date?
I've always run stock RH systems, to which I've added various compiled
stuff from the net. I have always kept the RH provided portions of my
stsem updated in the manner I mentioned, and have never had a problem
doing so.

YMMV.

You could just leave off the -f until you are sure you want to update
the kernel. I've never had a reason not to. Again, YMMV.

Tell RHN to update your current configuration in case you've installed
or removed packages without using up2date:
up2date -p
List what updates are available for your current config:
up2date -l
List all packages available:
up2date --showall
That's the cheat sheet in 30 seconds or less.
