[RCSE] Is there a new Airtronics transmitter in the near future?

2005-02-09 Thread glide
I just sold my Stylus transmitter, glider card, and memory card. I'm taking
a little hiatus from the hobby for personal and family reasons. I'm not
jumping out all the way (I have too much invested into the hobby to get out
completely grin). I do, however, want to keep up with the new trends and
technologies pertaining to the hobby. I've notice that Futaba has the new
14-MZ coming out. Wow, what a radio! Then I've read about the new JR 9303
in the February issue of Model Aviation. Of course, Multiplex has a
replacement (?) for the 3030 which is the Royal Evo line of transmitters.

Now where is Airtronics in the picture? I've heard rumors (?) that
Airtronics is giving up doing 50 MHz frequencies for their transmitters.
The Stylus transmitter which is Airtronics flagship radio for years is
showing its age compared to the newer radios coming out by their
competitors. Does anyone in the group know about any new tricks up
Airtronics sleeve? Enquiring minds wants to know.

Aloha to all in the group.

RE: [RCSE] Re: Copying Designs/Plans

2005-02-09 Thread John Derstine
They own the name, and in what I understand, that's what is in play
here. You can make an F-104 and call it a gizmo 2000. Certainly the
model manufacturer is not threatening or infringing on any full scale
design patents. The general shape is most likely not an issue.

On the Sharon the transition to the RG is about 12 of span from the

think it was for aerodynamic reasons.

[RCSE] The muddy field of copying

2005-02-09 Thread Tord Eriksson
In my younger years I worked at a famous
design department and I assure you that
copying goes on all the time.

Just as us amateurs borrow details we liked from
models we've built before, professional designers
do the same.

If you're an optics designer you look through lapsed
patents to see if there is anything there you could use,
if you're designing the rear view mirror of a truck you
check what the competition are up to, and steal those
ideas you like, in a slightly modified form, and so on.

When the Russians stole the general arrangement plans
of the Concorde, they realized that their manufacturing
skills in all departments were not quite up to the Brits
and Frogs level, and besides they were behind time-wise
and were ordered to fly first, so they simply used a simplified
design, with a few work-arounds - the fuel trimming system
of the Concorde was replaced by a highly advanced, retractable,
canard with double-slotted flaps, et cetera.

And how many models isn't there out there copying the Zagi,
or the Lazy Bee?

And for scale models there can be very little you can do if
someone makes a mold from your model, that in turn is
a scaled down copy of the real thing?! As long as the
innards are different of the resulting model I doubt that
anyone can do anything about it!

And copying doesn't need to be done as crudely as making a
plug out of a commercial kit; you could simply do a 3-D scan
of the fuselage and wings and then make your own copy a
little bigger, or smaller, just as you like, with little extra work
involved! If your scanner is big enough you can scan the full-size
aircraft, of course!

What one shouldn't do is to copy the mechanical solutions inside
the kit, unless they are old and proven.

Just as with chip production reverse engineering is perfectly
legal, as long as the end result has taken another route to get there!

In software this is a problem, as a routine written by someone
can easily be stolen as it is, and reused and then compiled into
something the original author wouldn't recognise.

The type of GUI (Graphic User Interface, like Windows) we all
are used to today were originally created by Xerox research
teams, but were quickly stolen by Apple and Microsoft, to
mention a few, while the three-button mouse was originally
treated as a hot potato (being a mechanical device) and wasn't
stolen till later :-)!

Still think Lockheed are nuts, period!

I agree. I just purchased a Sharon for use at this

also. Anyway, as the Sharon was leaning against the
wall, as models will do, I noticed some distinct
similarities... so I brought out the tip panel from my

into the Sharon's center panel.

Tooling is so time consuming and expensive on our
molded toys, and they have come up with a way to mix
and match parts that seems to work.

As far as why the Sharon works? I agree, it's just too
wierd, but it does work extremely well. Planform is
good, section combination = weird. But then of
course... there's all that span, span, and more
span. hmm. ;-)

As I understand it, Sacramento is interested in becoming the 3rd leg of the

be able to attend a soaring championship. We do have the Nat's, but the

Maybe some encouragement to attend the Nat's could make it the event it's

2005-02-09 Thread AMA3655
Jim -

At some time in the past the Airtronics servo had a spot in my planes. Once
upon a time it was worth paying extra to get a 141 because it was the only
servo that had metal gears, high torque, and compact size. All of these factors
made it a great wing servo 10 years ago.

Today that is not the same. They do occupy a space in my servo pantheon - but
the space is at the bottom rear of a drawer that hasen't been opened for many
years. If I were more ambitous I'd clean the drawer out and be done with them.

JR servos are the king of my servo heirarchy today. I get them locally if
available, otherwise I get them from Johnny Berlin.

Re: [RCSE] Re: Yet Another Servo ?

2005-02-09 Thread Simon Van Leeuwen
The 94141 was for years the only quality servo available for sailplane junkies.
It outperforms most (if not all) analog servos in it's size range.

Now that smaller (thinner) servos are available that exceed the 141 in torque
and speed, few if any will exceed it in the strength department. That is, to
hold up when you drag that flap across the ground during landing.

For those who do not have deep pockets, or the desire to own the latest new
fangled servo, they are excellent. Extremely reliable, no temperature drift
(like the Volz offerings), easily repaired (Airtronics has really quick
turnaround, just like Hitec) and don't cost an arm and a leg.

As servos evolve and offer more torque in smaller packages, their application
envelope also narrows. It's interesting and noteworthy that JR have elected to
release a servo that for all intents and purposes is identical to the Hitec HS-
125/5125 series. The 5125 has easily replaced not only the 141's I used for
years, but also my Volz servos. They just perform better in my circumstances.

On the Hitec's I have yet to experience any gear damage, whereas I have with
both Volz and JR. This includes forays into the 400KmH+ zone on sailplanes, 10-
27cell F5B, and now EDF.

The point is, all the current offerings have their advantages and
disadvantages. There are folks who have had success with all the brands
currently available, as well as failures. But if you are looking for a good
allround servo that won't break the bank, the 141 is an excellent candidate.

I agree. The western states triad was and still is a great idea. Visalia
is a great venue for the anchor event, but there has to be an organizer

[RCSE] VMS connectors

2005-02-09 Thread Joedy Drulia
As originally posted by Gordy concerning the Volz servos
… tiny VMS connector system…
I'd like to go on record as stating that the VMS system is not a
proprietary connector system. I feel that it is misleading to state so
otherwise.

While these connectors are being marketed and branded by Volz as Volz
Microconnector System, these connectors are, in fact, made by JST.

They are called the ZH series micro connectors. You can view the PDF spec
sheet from JST through this link:
http://www.jst-mfg.com/pdfE/eZH.pdf

I came upon this information while researching expansion port connectors on
the MPX EVO radio. The EVO has JST stamped adjacent to the expansion
widget plug in ports on the mainboard. Fellow EVO pilots confirmed and
located the information concerning these connectors.

If anyone is interested in obtaining these, they can be found from
www.maxxprod.com , www.lightflightrc.com as well as from Gordy directly.
Shop around though, prices vary quite a bit.

These are great connectors and since they are so small, will generally fit
within servo wiring tubes without needing to cut and solder the connectors
in order to install the wing servos.

I don't know if they will eventually catch on, but they have the merits to
do so.

I agree. The western states triad was and still is a great idea. Visalia
is a great venue for the anchor event, but there has to be an organizer

to be normalized and provided to the Spring Fling organizers, then those
results combined with SWC's and provided to the Visalia orgainzers. This

Question:

Does it matter that the Government, as Dept of the Army (prior to 1948)
was the originator of these designations, as in P-38 or US Air Force as in
U-2 etc. and NOT Lockheed (Martin)? And since it wasn't even Lockheed
Martin, do they have any rights to it at all? And, I guess this means
there won't be any Martin B-10's or B-26 Widomakers kitted either.

Apparent(!) patent infringement is what Lockheed Martin (the example in the
original thread) is using to thwart those who wish to offer radio control
models, AND static (plastic) models that look similar to what they built (like
 the F-104, U2, etc).

[RCSE] FS NYX F3F Carbon RTF

2005-02-09 Thread Pat McCleave
Hi Guys,

I am sure I will regret it later, but I am offering for sale my NYX F3F Carbon.
This plane is Yellow Tops with Red/White Tips, Red Bottoms with Yellow Stripes
and Yellow Fuse. The plane is good to very good condition. The fuselage was
broken in a hard landing but has been completely repaired both structurally and
cosmetically. The wings have couple of small srapes and dings. The plane
comes with JR DS368's on Flaps and Rudder, DS168's on the ailerons and DS3421
on the elevator and Hoopes Connectors to connect them all up. All servos are
mounted in mounts and are plug and play for easy replacement in the field. A
super nice ballast system is also included with the plane. I will send
detailed digital pictures of the plane to any serious inquiries. I am asking
$1300.00 shipped Ground to any address in the CONUSA. The reason I am selling
this plane is to finance the developement of my own World Beater Slope Racer.

See Ya,

Hi Joedy,

Yup its a feeling..of yours. No one I know of stated that it
was proprietary or anything else in that vein. What it is definitely ...is just
another benefit of the Volz servo system and credit should go to Michael for
incorporating it into his servosfor more than 10 years!

I don't know if they will eventually catch on, but they
have the merits to do so.

'for more than 10 years" they have been a critiical part
of a servo designed specifically for use in high performance competiton
sailplanes.

A good thing is a good thing, but not sure what your
first point was about. VMS is really just a simple way to
indicate those little darlings versus the usual servo connectors, no evil
conspiracy to misleadthere :-)

The rest of your post was good info. You can get
themto modify and adapt other brand servosaway from chopping and
soldering.

Thanks for the info!

Re: [RCSE] Thermal Duration Contest: Triad, 2-Days, etc...

2005-02-09 Thread strotherbj

I have read this thread with interest, and offer a couple of thoughts,

A couple of years ago, Dr. Dan submitted a proposal, (Actually Several) for just this kind of thing, and then to base the same around the LSF.

We talked to the idea of East Coast, West Coast, MId States, North and South Regions, ( although we did not talk divying how to do it); With a regoinal in those zones.
You then take the top 5 ( or whatever)from each region, hook up in a central
"TO ALL OR MOST" hosting city, and have at it.
We were not sure about restricting the entry to the regional players only, or allowing anyone plus the regional guys.

Another idea was to have a CASH bash, you may have see a query from me on this in the past, I dropped the idea after a na sayer compared the idea a horse championship or something, and crap about people stretching their limits, crashing planes and alikedrugs, sex and rock and rollgeez

At anyrate, I was at the point of being too busy with moving, work the LSF and the Nats to presue it further.

The major issue for anyone is time, record keeping, and finding sponsors.
The issue with the last item, is "IF" you can find a sponsor, you will probably be out of luck till the next year when they can budget you...
Or I had one guy want a list of the contestants up front, ( bet you can't guess who !!!), and then he might find something for you

Point is, even with todays electronic age, something like this requires "SOME" work which goesusally not rewarded, in any fashion or form.

Lets face it most (NOT ALL)of glider guider populace, are cheap, won't travel, expect everything for nothing, and will absolutely refuse to send an e-mail, or a post card; ( And I know this to be a fact, as I knew one Donor to the Nats raffle that put addresses and stamped postcards in their donation package, all they had to do was mail the darn thing ) to Thank the vendors, donors and/ or Sponsors.

Ergo, there is noithing in it for them except agvaration.

Heck, I know of another guy, who won a really nice prize at an event.
He decided he did not want the prize and he tried to sell the prize back to the donor, FOR RETAIL
Needless to say that donor has left usI can't blame them either.

There is a hearty few of us, who will take the time, to travel, spend the money to lodge, and enjoy the people we meet... a hearty few !!!

Its just not worth the effort !!
My 2 Cents !!
Thanks for the bandwith

Sadly I have tried the Hitec 5125MG. I say sadly because it costed me some
flying time in 3 great competitions. I even burnt my fingers on one. Flew
10min with one flap in start position and landed on the mark (Nordic
championship...). Flipped the model around and ripped the cover off. Man
that servo was hot!
The Hitec 5125 is really fast. It is great on neutral and fits in most
models. But the gears need to be changed. First it gets sloppy - then the
gear locks.
Hitec could have had a winner here but probably wanted to get the price down
with alu gears.

If one really need 10-11mm servos there are other choices that should be
mentioned. Volz WingMaxx (and Star..) now is digital and the New Futaba 3150
might be a choice!

I am bowing to you guys for giving me the chance to compete against you.
Hopefully I can also give something back with pictures and txt on the web

A big thanks to what seems to be my team during the F3J-Nats also. Don

Re: [RCSE] VMS connectors

2005-02-09 Thread Simon Van Leeuwen
You are correct, the original claim of proprietary is/was misleading. I doubt
these 1.5mm pitch connectors will ever become popular though. In fact they have
a number of shortcomings;

- can only accept 26 to 32awg lead
- maximum current rating is 1 amp at a low 50V
- Not compatible with anything else, which requires you to buy an extension,
which increases the R losses by having to employ more of these measly
connectors.

The ZH compact connectors are great in the miniature world of electronics,
especially low voltage low current applications (like cellphones etc, they are
even too big for this application now). Go to:

http://www.jst.com/index.html

to see their complete line-up and the specification sheet.

I offer customers the option of sending me their servos so I can install
special locking connector housings that mate to the male housing I normally
install on the other ends of the custom made wiring harnesses.

In the end, the customer gains the ability to use the servos (Volz or
otherwise - the locking mechanism is easily removed) in other aircraft by
simply being able to plug into any standard 0.100 receiver or extension. All
the OEM's on both sides of the pond supply connectivity based on 0.100
spacing. It's time Volz got with the program. They would certainly sell more
product...

I don't know if they will eventually catch on, but they have the merits to
 do so.

2005-02-09 Thread Frank Slaughter
The Extreme DS is set up so the elevator servo goes inside the fin, making the
linkage about 1 1/2 long. There's room in there for a 5125 or a DS168. I
don't know if a WingMaxx would fit or not.

First it gets sloppy - then the
 gear locks.
Hitec could have had a winner here but probably wanted to get the price
 down with alu gears.

If one really need 10-11mm servos there are other choices that should be
mentioned. Volz WingMaxx (and Star..) now is digital and the New Futaba
 3150 might be a choice!

I am bowing to you guys for giving me the chance to compete against you.
Hopefully I can also give something back with pictures and txt on the web
after the Nats (or maybe even while we are there).
A big thanks to what seems to be my team during the F3J-Nats also. Don
Richmond, Rob Glover and Larry Ruble have taken me under their wings.

BTW I even got a Paypal donation from a Swede today :-)

going on with this Triad event?
Don't we have enough interest to bring this back and help
bring more interest for these events?
I guess I'm trying to get my flying fix, can't get enough

How about restructuring some sort of TD Championship that
might involve flying in different States, East Coast,

Don't let Edgar fool you. We have LOTS going on here in SOCAL. First there
is the SC-Squared (SC2) contest series. 8 events this year that will draw
between 40 and 60 pilots per event including a few you may recognize like
Wurts, Perkins, Jolly, Smith, Sage and so on.

Then there are about 8 or 9 clubs between Sand Diego (TPG) and Thousand Oaks
(TOSS) who each do a monthly contest. They are pretty well spaced with not
all being the same weekends and some on Saturday and others on Sunday. I
think if you wanted to you could fly a contest every weekend, or at least 3
out of 4 weekends, each month.

Then there is Phoenix, Visalia and Sacramento along with the NATS for those
that want to make the trip.

Edgar is just hard to please. Like he said, he's a junkie!!

Yep :) But I found something that does it better and holds its breath
better too. New compressor pulls full vacuum (measured directly from hose)
and keeps it at least for two hours when disconnected. My quick-n-dirty
testbag had about -0.9bar (~26 Hg) (measured from the other end of the
bag) and the thinned mylar went around the curved wingtip very well. New
compressor is also very silent and does not get hot at all.

Justin, why don't you attend and see if you have the same opinion. Anyone
that wins at Nats is the Champion, there is always representative skills
and talent there. It's a very challenging set of contests over the week.

So I encourage you and others to attend, you will have fun, you will meet
and fly with some very special people day after day. You will learn, and
you will be challenged, and get to fly on the AMA grounds, very nice.

It really is a good time, it wears me out and rejuvenates me
simultaneously. 8-)

2005-02-09 Thread Daryl Perkins
The Triad was a real neat concept. If memory serves me
correctly, it started out with the SWC, the Rose Bowl
2 day, then Visalia representing the last leg. It was
awarded to the top scoring pilot over the three comps,
after scores from each contest were normalized to
1,000. It has died a slow death, with the death of the
Pasadena club. A few clubs tried to keep it alive, ISS
held the second leg, then the guys in Sac tried to
keep it alive. But I don't think anyone reported the
results to the proper person at Visalia, to award the
trophy. I made the trek to all the contests a couple
of times in search of the title, only to have the
trophy not be awarded.

It may have been moved, but the last time I saw the
trophy (it's a perpetual trophy - and it's just awful
looking) it was in the trailer at Visalia. I dropped
it off and ran It's in a huge wooden box, very
well protected.

I'd love to see it resurrected. Shows consistency,
amongst the top western soaring pilots.

Slowly coming back to me . . .

I was approached by someone at Visalia (lost that contact info) who
wanted to represent the 2nd leg (I assume it was the Sacramento club).
If all we need to do as the first leg is normalize the scores and
forward them we can do the triad this year. If that person is out
there ping me off list and I will get you the normalized scores.

Could someone at Visalia verify the location of the trophy?

[RCSE] Higher Lift Airfoils...

2005-02-09 Thread Paul Breed
I'm still fussing with my solar wing.
I've 95% answered my Planform questions, now it is on to airfoils.
The Airfoil I flew in 2004 was an airfoil Mark Drela designed for me
about 5 years ago. My request to him was a low pitching moment airfoil
with flat spots on it to put the solar cells.
Since then I've changed solar cells (50% more efficent) and they no longer
fit the flat spots.

I've also come to the conclusion that as built with a very light trailing
edge it is not
holding shape well enough to really be low pitching moment.

So I'm searching for an airfoil
Re will be around 170K
1)I want to minimize sink/maximize climb.
This means optimizing (Cl^1.5)/Cd (I think this is the element to maximize)
2)I'd like to minimize pitching moment to reduce wing structure.
3)The wing will be built up
I realize that #1 and #2 are some what counter to each other
In playing with things in profili I've found nothing that beats the clark-Y
for
maximizing requirement #1 I know there are much newer airfoils, and it's a
bit off topic for a soaring
group, but this seems to be where the brains hang out...

All this chatter about VMS connectors prompts me to throw in my
2-bits. Volz taught me a valuable lesson. Having a connector right next
to the servo is a wise thing to do. Alas, the Volz connectors are s
small for my tired old eyes and feeble fingers that I have a hard time
using them. Alas, I also use JR 368's in most everything and JR hasn't
figured that out yet, so I make my own micro-connector set-up.

Go to http://www.digikey.com/
Part No. 929834-02-36-ND
Part No. 929974-01-36-ND
The pictures on the digikey site aren't very good but these are soldered
connectors exactly the same size as the connectors we find on
servos. Either of the components listed above will fit securely into the
regular commercial connectors we know and love. The first one is the male
part and the second one is the female part. They are dirt cheap and easy
to use.  I've had trouble making the press-fit connectors work reliably;
soldering is unambiguous. At the servo, after they are installed in, but
before they are truly buried in a wing, I slip a bit of heat shrink tubing
over the connection to keep all the bits together.

I'm not clever enough to have thought this up myself, there use to be a url
somewhere describing how to make your own servo leads where I learned about
this. Is that site still up? Anyone?

Cheers,

Mine is also refrigerator compressor. I got it for free from the place
that removes freon from the old refrigerators before they scraped. They
had pile of compressors there, the one that worked well was fourth that I
tried - one had electrical leakage inside, one had air leakage inside, one
did not start at all and the fourth was ok. If you can get used units
cheaply, but are worried about the reliablity, you can always put a check
valve between the pump and bag and run two units in parallel.

I think that new refrigerator compressor will work well as a vacuum pump.
I do not know nothing about airbrushing.

BTW, if you can select your compressor select one that is designed for
high starting torque. Those compressors are able to start even when there
is partial vacuum on the suction side. The low starting torque compressors
will not start when there is vacuum on the suction side and require
pressure equalization tubing between suction and pressure sides in real
refrigerators. LST compressor can still be used for continous run.

Also, there are low back pressure, medium back pressure and
high back pressure compressors - I did not completely understand what is
the difference.

Danfoss has very good documentation on their website. Go to
www.danfoss.com, Products, Refrigeration and A/C, Compressors, Hermetic
Compressors. Select Literature tab and open the Instruction/User guide
hive. Mounting Instructions for Danfoss Compressors is good reading if
you are rebuilding old unit - lots of this info applies to all
refrigerator compressors. Refrigeration - an Introduction to the Basics
