In my SM, I manually delete everything after a month (e.g., today is
4/12/2019 so I manually delete everything older than 3/12/2019 in my
history (^H)). After I copy my SM's place.sqlite file to Firefox's
profile, I noticed its history still shows older entries. Why aren't
these deleted? I think this is cauisng my places.sqlite file to keep
growing bigger slowly. :(

Does anyone know what's up? Thank you for reading and hopefully
answering. :)

No. Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. are the big memory and CPU hoggers in

Hi, I'm using both Firefox and SeaMonkey (and Safari) and I see a lot
of differences in speed and hangs.
Firefox does not hang even with a lot of tabs (and many Facebook
pages and groups in different tabs, YouTube videos and other huge
websites), while I have SM blocked many times a day.

And this is on iMac 5K with 24GB of RAM!

One main difference I see on macOS between Firefox and SM is that FF
splits the load in several processes (they were 4, now 8 with FF 66)
while SM is just one big application.

Eg. now I have:
- SeaMonkey 3,58 GB
- Firefox 825 MB
- FirefoxCP WebExtensions 362 MB
- FirefoxCP Web Content 485 MB
- FirefoxCP Web Content 425 MB
- FirefoxCP Web Content 206 MB

Why this is not applied to SM?
http://www.erahm.org/2019/03/13/doubling-the-number-of-content-processes-in-firefox/

PS: SeaMnokey is also using more CPU than Firefox, even when it's in
background!

Quantum isn't an engine. It's just a branding like Ford Focus, Google
Chrome. Firefox Quantum.

What's the correct saying then? Newer Gecko engine version?

There is no new Gecko engine. 56 is pretty close to 57 and not that

Oh. I thought that was the new Gecko engine, but v52 to v56 is a big

There are always some optimizations being made which reduce memory
usuage. Much was because of ripped out functionality.

The biggest changes between 56 and 60 are the new style system named
stylo. Only big component used and written in rust (which I don't care
for because seems to be just another overhyped programming language).
Also e10s is always on in Fx thanks to no more classic extensions so you
will see a more responsive browser with s*cky websites like facebook.
Memory comsumption here is up because of multiple processes.

webrender might become a thing in 68 but with so many half baked > graphics
drivers around we will see how it works on older PCs.

That could be a problem for me since others and I use our decade old
computers (Windows 7, Mac OS X, and Debian oldstable/Jessie v8)! :(

In reality the browsing component of 2.57 already on the "new" shiny
quantum does not feel much different form the patched up unofficial
2.53. The only big difference here is missing e10s and this does not do
anything to reduce menory.

Dang it. :(

Running 60 at work now and then and I still prefer SeaMonkey even with
its limitations :)

Ditto. I always loved the suite products, since Netscape days, even
though people think I am crazy!

There are a lot of good people still working on Gecko and doing good
things but Fx will never again be my browser of choice. Porting
SeaMonkey to the latest source would mean ripping out more things like
themes and bookmark enhancements and and. The resulting product would
probably be nothing I care about so I am just looking forward to get
2.57 done and see what happens then.

Same here even though I do have and use it just in case since MS and
many web sites don't support its IE11. I hate Google Chrome! :(

Looks like the site operator doesn't want to bother with Seamonkey at all.

I did some playing with spoofing, and it looks like it's rejecting any
UA that shows "seamonkey".  I tried spoofing 53.0 (as Firefox 60.0) and
that rejected, too.  On the other hand, no problems with spoofing
Firefox 52.9 ESR. Also, no problem spoofing PaleMoon

Might be that the site operator is assuming that Seamonkey is dead.

The Private Data window shows four different histories, each separate

Because web developers and designers don't test for other web browsers.
Chrome has big percentage of users. It's like Netscape vs. Internet

Personally my heart isn't into this. Even while paving the way to 2.57
I am always going to add this and that to 2.53 because that is for me
the version where everything still works.

I date back back to Netscape 4. I use SeaMonkey because it kept a *VERY*
neat functional user interface {*LACKING* Firefox/Thunderbird}. I
particularly want to have browser and email in the same package. I even
occasionally use Composer. I don't have a current programming skill set
- 8080/8085 assembler primarily ;/

I went further back since Netscape v2 days. I agree with its GUI design.
People think I am crazy for using bloated suites.

of your time and effort is needed to get this done.

That being said: after reading the blog update I'm not very optimistic
about the options the seamonkey project has because in my optinion
Seamonkey will have to go for Quantum in order to keep up with the web
standards and new technology. Without an competitive rendering engine it
will not have any future. And if this means that classic extensions will
no longer be supported or loved features will have to be dropped then it
should be done. Because without an up to date engine Seamonkey will not
be able to appeal to new users and long time users will slowly move on
as well. I.e. in my optinion Seamonkey would not have a future without
an up-to-date engine.

Would it maybe be possible to build some XUL layer on top of Quantum? I
mean a way to still provide the needed interfaces for XUL, but in the
end render everything using the new engine?

In any case, I think it would be better to spend effort into migration

Whatever the future of the Seamonkey project will be, I'm very thankful

Could you copy a file in the same directory of the same hard-disk on

CTRL-C then CTRL-V would it create the same file with the same name ?

Windows 10 will use the same file name and append " - Copy" to it.

Hello,

Seamonkey Navigator has been my main web browser for more than a year
now, but I still have a few user profiles left in Firefox.

What would be the best way to move these profiles to Seamonkey? I would
like to preserve as much of the original profiles as possible,
including:

- History
- Bookmarks
- Preferences
- Installed extensions, if compatible
   (there are no webextensions)
- passwords and cookies
- userContent.css

Could/should I just move the profile directories to
$HOME/.mozilla/seamonkey and add them to profiles.ini?

(Is there some way I could then disable Mail only in these migrated
profiles?)

The file places.sqlite has history and bookmarks.  I have no idea if
they are cross-compatible any more, however.  Bookmarks are easy enough
to transfer.  Back them up or export as HTML and restore or import into
SeaMonkey.

SM v2.49.4's old places.sqlite will work in the newer Firefox versions,
but not in reversed. Firefox will upgrade it.

I imagine that some preference settings have changed, so comparing them
by comparing prefs.js files or from about:config would be a good idea.
Since SeaMonkey does newsgroups and email as well, there are a lot more
preference settings for it.

If the extensions for Firefox were also written for SeaMonkey, there
would be no problem, but I would check install.rdf in the .xpi files to
make sure that they would be compatible with the target app (SeaMonkey)
version.  If the extensions were not written for SeaMonkey, then running
them through the converter website
(http://addonconverter.fotokraina.com/) might be able to fix them.  That
would depend on whether the extension needs a specific interface or not.

To transfer passwords, you need to copy key3.db and logins.json.

For cookies, you need cookies.sqlite.

You could simply copy the chrome directory into the new profile for
userContent.css.

For me, I usually skip all this, redo them from scratch, etc. since I
only care about my places.sqlite. Everything else can be recovered.

Jonathan, this is an old known issue with old SeaMonkey (SM) web
browser. Google needs to fix it on their end, but it doesn't look like
they will. As a workaround, you can disable SM's user agent string
option not to advertise Firefox compability as shown in my uploaded

I don't have an account so can't log in to try it. However, since it's
Google, try DISabling "Advertise Firefox compatibility", so that the UA
string includes SeaMonkey but NOT Firefox - that seems to work better on
a number of Google sites.

Yeah, I already tried that as part of my UA tests. Same result. :(

When you mentioned "events", are you meaning the Calendar/Lightning,

Yes, Calendar/Lightning thing. I was like what is this doing in here?

And I think wg9s' releases are, sort of, bleeding edge, so it was a good
idea to back up your profile!!

I did. ;)

However, I went back to my official 32-bit SM after using it since there
weren't really improvements. I was hoping faster speeds with better
memory managements with the crazy leaks from badly designed web sites.
Oh well! :(

and 500 GB SSD?

2. In my updated 64-bit W7 HPE SP1, my 32-bit SM is slow with some
web sites especially with muliple tabs like on YouTube, Google
News, LinkedIn, etc. For an example, it can go up to almost 3 GB of
RAM with about 10 HTML5 YouTube video tabs (not playing all at the
same time, just buffering them with one video playing). I don't
have this problem in MBP. I wonder if it is capped at 3 GB of RAM
since it is a 32-bit process even though I am using a 64-bit OS.

I hope someone can answer my technical questions. Thank you for

You need to close SeaMonkey.

What I usually do:

removing storage dir
removing storage.*
removing webappsstore.*

Might not be so easy to do this in 2.57 because web extensions
actually use this but for 2.49.x and 2.53 it is so far fine.
Check the prefs under Advanced->Offline Apps so that not every site
can put in junk there. This needs an overhaul too and doesn't cover
