For hotels, that's typically because your program is set to use your
home SMTP server, and lots of providers only accept outgoing mail
through their own SMTP servers.

Well don't keep it to yourself! What'dja do? What was the solution?

Set your gmail account for an imap account. You might want to limit the
number of mail download to 1000 at first.
Then set the Seamonkey according to the included screen captures

So that wasn't a solution -- you still can't send mail?

BTW, gmail has a setting that allows you to download POP3 mail normally,
but by default you have to read it through the webmail interface. I have
my gmail account set to do that because I hate webmails.

Well, when in doubt, you could always see if there is a firmware
update for your router but I am not sure that's it anymore. You said
you successfully set up a GMail account right? If there's a firmware
update, you could try that. Otherwise, factory reset your router and
start over. If it still fails, it's got to be WowWow. Or try your
portable thunderbird at someone else's house and see if it works
there. That will eliminate the possibility of it being a router
problem.

Trying from someone else's house might not work anyway. Some ISPs
allow you to
send through their SMTP server only when connected via their service,
to avoid
it being used for sending spam.

That's especially the case for the ones which don't require any
authentication
- the authentication is done by connecting to their service. Wow
aren't using
SSL/TLS or password encryption as far as I can tell, so the login is
pretty
weak and may just an additional check, still requiring you to connect
through
their service anyway.

Mark.

So since you have a gmail account why not just set it as your default
account and under account setting for the WOW at the bottom tell it to
use the default Gmail SMTP. This way when you check mail on the WOW
account it will use POP3 for receiving and Gmail SMTP for sending mail.
I have five account setup this way because I do not have an ISP. I live
and travel in an RV and can have different internet provider everyday.

I doubt that it is the router. It all sounds like the issue is with wowway.
They have made some change to their server and have not properly documented

I have contacted Wow tech service and sent them several screen prints of the

yes, I had been using the smtp version until the report of just the mail

POP3 Incoming Server STARTTLS @ Port 110: mail.wowway.com

Yes, have tried both. I will comment that I had removed all passwords from
the password manager and when signing in to retrieve my mail, entered my
standard password for the pop. It accepted it and retrieved the mail just
fine. It is apparent now, that there is something affecting the smtp
connection. Normally, this would be the port, but I have tried the old 25,
the new 587 and another that I ran across in one of the blogs. It was in the

I did download the portable and installed it to one of my portable flash
drives that I use for portable progams. It behaved exactly as the desktop and
laptop standard installs. That is, retrieved mail, but could not send. Popup
window requested password and kept repeating requests. In doing some
additional digging, I'm beginning to think that the router (TP-Link) is
responding with the 25 port which will be blocked by Wow. I'm doing some
further investigation on the settings that might give WOW the correct port
response. More later.

OK so that pretty much confirms it for me. Any chance you could try
portable TB on someone's machine to see if it works normally?

Of course, you could always try changing your password and if it
*still* fails, it's your network port or the Wow smtp server. Can't be
anything else.

I have tried the portable on both the desktop and my laptop with the
same results. I'm beginning to suspect my router is the problem.

Yes, have tried those along the way. I did contact WOW for 3rd party
email clients. and they sent the settings that they have been saying all
along.

From a tech at WOW
POP3 Server = pop3.mail.wowway.com Port 110
smtp server = smtp.mail.wowway.com Port 587
Sign in or log in required for both
SSL do not select
Encryption type None for both
Require login using secure password = do not select.

Am going to go try this when finishing the mornings mail

I updated to 2.41,but it did not help. Same problem of not accepting
the password.

As an aside, I did install windows mail and had the same problem of not
accepting the password. I did get a more complete error with it tho.

Well, now that you *have* installed Windows Mail, ..

Yes, I installed windows mail 2012 and got exactly the same result, when

but not accepting.

Yes, but now that you have Windows Mail installed, as they requested,
have you contacted WOW Help again??

I haven't seen this suggestion in this thread yet, but maybe I missed it:

Try creating an SMTP logfile. That file might actually contain some info
as to why the sending doesn't work, so we don't have to guess at the cause.

See for more
information on how to setup logging. Remember to unset the variables
once you're done collecting the logsā€¦

So that should be proof enough that your problem is not in SeaMonkey but
either with your account credentials or their server.

Since the problem still exists using the application Wow support (i.e.
Windows Mail), hopefully their support line will be at least slightly
more helpful. Once they've got it working for you in Windows Mail, you
should be able to use similar settings in SeaMonkey - if it's not clear
how the differently names settings correspond, someone here will
probably be able to help with that.

It would be good if you could post back with the solution anyway once
it's sorted, in case other Wow customers hit similar problems using
SeaMonkey or Thunderbird!

before the "@" sign), and some want the entire email address.

Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Outgoing Server (SMTP)
This will be the last item on the list, after your email accounts.

Double-click the server name in the list on the right, or click it
once to
select it and then hit "Edit." At the bottom of the dialog, the last
entry is
"User Name:" -- is it exactly what WOW wants? Correct case, correct
punctuation, correct content (prefix only or prefix@domain)?

2) When you check the password manager, are you verifying the POP
password
(for receiving mail) instead of the SMTP password? There should be
two

distinct entries; be sure you're looking at the right one. And the
password
might well be different.

I have the saved password app that connects directly into SM. The
password that I am
looking at is labeled smtp so I know that I am looking at the right
one. The pop one is
under the WOWxxx.com listing.

Are you positive that your settings per the pdf are correct?

I have created a WOW smtp connection with the informations contained in
the pdf given.
Here is my test: http://home.scarlet.be/~rs268454/WOW-smtp-settings.jpg
Keith, try, or check/modify your SMTP parameters using this JPG

Ray - Did those settings actually work for you, or did you just fill
in the dialog to show where each item should go? There seems to be
conflicting information as to the correct settings, and I not being on
Wow! (nor even in the right country!) I can can't check.

Mark.

It's just that I filled informations in the zones .. just to show .
But the PDF given and the page frome the WOW website are different .. so
I am perplex.

As an answer to another contributor, I installed Windows Mail (2012) for

Strange to read "The host 'pop3.mail.wowway.com ' could not be found" because
"ping pop3.mail.wowway.com" and "ping smtp.mail.wowway.com" finds those two
needed hosts.

It looks on this page: http://www.wowway.com/support/internet - choice "Mail"

I guess that makes 4 combinations to try. Or contact them to clarify what the
correct

guess
you're back to going along with them on that and then transferring the working

The server addresses also differ between the PDF and web page, but both are

I had similar problems with ATT/Yahoo a few years ago.
The ATT techs were not familiar with computers or the internet
beyond browsing to happy eye candy pages.
They were of no help whatsoever. Sounds like WOW expertise is similar.

looking at is labeled smtp so I know that I am looking at the right
one. The pop one is
under the WOWxxx.com listing.

Are you positive that your settings per the pdf are correct?
http://www.wowway.com/docs/wow/documents-support-internet/pop-imap-settings-north.pdf

Hmm... That contradicts their web page:
  http://www.wowway.com/support/internet

Username: PDF says "Full Email Address i.e = johnsm...@wowway.com",
while their web page says "Verify the Login ID field has defaulted to
your username (before the @wowway.com)".

SMTP port: PDF says 143 while their web page says 587

I guess that makes 4 combinations to try. Or contact them to clarify
what the correct settings should be (and if they insist on only
supporting Windows Live Mail, I guess you're back to going along with
them on that and then transferring the working settings to SeaMonkey...)

The server addresses also differ between the PDF and web page, but both
are valid and resolve to the same server, so it shouldn't matter which
you use.

Two thoughts:

1) It's been suggested several times in this thread that you confirm
WOW's
username requirements for SMTP. Some ISPs want only the prefix (the
part
before the "@" sign), and some want the entire email address.

There should be two
distinct entries; be sure you're looking at the right one. And the
password
might well be different.

OK, and the username? This question has been asked at least three times

My ISP (WOW!) has just changed mailing securities and now I have to use
a password on the smtp. I cannot get the entry to take when trying to
send. I am using SM 2.39. I have gone through a number of trials.
Their requirement is that I use no connection Security, Port 587, and
Password. I have set the smtp to these conditions, but the password
will not enter. I have cleared the password file of these and then
tried the entry again. It did not take, but the password was now in the
password file. For some reason, it appears that the password file cannot
communicate with the smtp. What am I missing here? The mail sending was
working fine until WOW changed their requirements. Wow, of course, wants
me to change to Windows Mail and IE. SM security is exactly the reason
that I avoided MS Products.

Keith, not sure why this is happening but you might try deleting both
the SMTP and the password and then recreate the SMTP.

Also make sure WOW haven't chgned whether your user login has changed (i.e.
was just your account alias but is now your whole mail address, or vice-versa.)
Previous, there was no login to send, but they changed the security requiring
port 587 and requiring user id. With that, I have to use my password. SMTP
keeps asking for password, yet it is there in the password manager. When I
try to send an email, the request for password keeps coming up and cylcling
the request, but not accepting. I have removed all the passwords in the
password manager, and removed the smtp in the setup as well. I even went
through a complete remove (did backup my email) and then reinstalled SM.
Still would not accept password when trying to send. Yet, I can go to Wow
website and sign into my account with my password and it is accepted there.
Wow is no help on SM. Wants me to go to Windows Mail and IE /

Make certain you're using the correct username for SMTP. Depending on
the provider, it sometimes has to be the entire email address, and
sometimes only the part before the '@'. From
http://www.wowway.com/support/internet it looks like you need just the
bit before the '@'. If in doubt, try both possibilities. It may not be
the same as what you use to log in to their website, although it often is.

Although you say they require no connection security, there's a separate
option for whether the password is encrypted - so perhaps that's not set
correctly. From the Windows Live Mail instructions at that
http://www.wowway.com/support/internet it says to select the "clear text
authentication" option; I think in SeaMonkey that means you'd need to
select "Password, transmitted insecurely" for the authentication method.

If all else fails and you're on Windows, it might be easiest to humour
them and set your account up on Windows Mail if that's all they'll
support (make sure it's not set to delete mail from the server after
downloading). If it works with Windows Mail, it's time to figure out
what's different (perhaps confusion over the naming of various options).
If it doesn't work, you're now having trouble with something they
support so hopefully they'll help you get it working with Windows Mail
and then you can transfer the solution to SeaMonkey.

Mark.

An interesting side on this, is that I can post to the newsletter without a
problem, but cannot send an email through ISP with their security
