I know, there are 2 node/way containing: tag k=is_in:country v=Indonesia / and 20 node/way containing tag k=is_in:country v=disputed territory / No node/way containing tag k=is_in:country v=Philippines / since agreed to remove them. Anyway, I modified the style code to add the is_in:country=Philippines prior to compiling the map. Since, it is a required tag for mkgmap. IMO, this should be fixed by mkgmap later since the is_in tags are very difficult to manage. Using polygons and relations of boundaries should be better. hey! just thinking aloud here. i know we have our osm map. and we also have the 10m elevation contour map of the country. what if... we can consolidate the two. in maning's page (http://esambale.wikispaces.com/osmphil_garmin) there is already an osm map with contour. i havent checked it yet but the note says it is only metro manila map and it might get too cluttered. maybe, we can, put osm map for the whole country, and then put contour maps for special places/mountains like apo, kanlaon, pulag, mayon, et.al. im not sure how this can be implemented but maybe, just maybe there is a way to put contour maps (just for certain areas where it can be useful) with street maps from osm. this will eliminate me having to put two maps in my gpsr and enabling/disabling the mamp whic is needed/not needed. just a suggestion guys :) -- Rem Zamora 0916-55-11-407 ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph
Re: [talk-ph] maps for mountaineers/ outdoor lovers
Well, if you want to get your hands dirty, you can actually DIY! The Garmin maps are compiled using mkgmap and you just need the raw OSM data (Geofabrik provides Philippine data extracts), the contour data (maybe Maning can share his data, but they were made using Groundtruth from NASA's SRTM data), and mkgmap itself (plus some learning time). But, we could additionally adopt your suggestion and consider adding another Garmin map download which has the consolidated contours for selected mountaineering peaks, and make the hiking/trekking trails more prominent. A mountaineer's map anyone? Hmmm, thinking about it, I actually like the idea! Instead of targeting only the car owners with the OSM Garmin map, we could also expand the market and target also the mountaineering clubs. A Garmin map that still contains roads (so the mountaineers can drive to the base camps and jump-off points) plus prominent hiking trails and contours would be a perfect addition. And if this map becomes popular, then we have another potential source of contributors who can map the rural and mountainous areas. :-D On Wed, Feb 16, 2011 at 10:04 PM, rem zamora pompy...@gmail.com wrote: hey! just thinking aloud here. i know we have our osm map. and we also have the 10m elevation contour map of the country. what if... we can consolidate the two. in maning's page (http://esambale.wikispaces.com/osmphil_garmin) there is already an osm map with contour. i havent checked it yet but the note says it is only metro manila map and it might get too cluttered. maybe, we can, put osm map for the whole country, and then put contour maps for special places/mountains like apo, kanlaon, pulag, mayon, et.al. im not sure how this can be implemented but maybe, just maybe there is a way to put contour maps (just for certain areas where it can be useful) with street maps from osm. this will eliminate me having to put two maps in my gpsr and enabling/disabling the mamp whic is needed/not needed. just a suggestion guys :) -- Rem Zamora 0916-55-11-407 ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph -- http://vaes9.codedgraphic.com ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph

+1 to all the ideas mentioned. Everything is possible, given enough resources. Part of the goal of the osmph garmin map is to create easy to use tools for anyone to compile their own maps (and hopefully share them). The focus right now is to make the default map useful to everyone. I encourage you to at least try to compile your own maps and work on the customizations. I'd be glad to help you get started. If we can get a real map going for the hikers i know they will love it. All my climbing friends really like to see where they are going or have been.. Also helps in the Planning, seeing how difficult a track may be.. Regards.. I use Cycle map, but it does not get close enough so you end up on a steep incline which is not detailed on the map.. Eugene, Magandang project yan! This is actually important as it can be used not only for recreation purposes but even for search and rescue efforts. I am thinking, if we could start on a case site like a national park that is frequently visited by visitors both seasoned and not seasoned climbers. For example Mt. Pulag National Park. Given the traffic it gets the whole year, the benefits of having a gps map of the park complete with trail and waypoints has a very high potential. For the past years, I was doing trail survey data with the UP Mountaineers and we have covered Ambangeg/Ambaguio/Akiki/ and just recently Tinoc trail. For those people who might be interested, a DRAFT result of the trail survey can be downloaded from this link: https://www.yousendit.com/download/MzZFblFKbWdoeVpjR0E9PQ password: @MtPNP_Draft The trails are already in OSM and some of the waypoints. Re: [talk-ph] maps for mountaineers/ outdoor lovers
Bunny, We have a few mountain trails already added in OSM. Most mountain peaks are also there (coming from GNS so this needs correction). Using the default map and contour, I believe this is useful already for mountaineers. What we need from the mountaineers are: - more trail/hiking data along with the trail classes (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:sac_scale) - location of peaks/viewpoints/trail stops and other amenities I don't know if UPM or other mountaineering groups are aware of our project or the osmph garmin maps. We can of course design a garmin map for them, all we need are inputs on how they classify trails. Perhaps we can have a session with these group to share how to contribute in osm and then compile their own maps? I think given the accessibility of GPS units now compared before, a lot of people in the outdoor community are aware of this technology. We need to find a way to inform the existence of OSM garmin maps and how the outdoor community can contribute. Through e-groups is already an easy way for this. Good idea of having a GPS/trail mapping/workshop/skill share or whatever we call it. I think we could talk to ROX about this. There is a regular discussion of outdoor topics such as first aid, trail running, kayaking, etc that they organize in their store. I think proposing a skill share on GPS for outdoor people and mountaineering groups in collaboration with ROX fits in well. --bunny On Thu, Feb 17, 2011 at 11:57 AM, Leonard Soriano banito_pi...@yahoo.com wrote: Eugene, Magandang project yan! [OSM-talk] New script: gpxsplitter, chops GPX files with waypoints
gpxsplitter splits multi-track GPX files, containing waypoints, into individual one-track GPX files with their respective waypoints. I've been dragging my feet releasing this script… so, here it is. If you've an i-Blue 747, Qstarz Q1000, or other MTK-based GPS unit, then you understand the problem—when you download data from these devices, tracks and waypoints are all bludgeoned together, and need to be split before use. gpxsplitter does that splitting. It's intended to be run first-thing after downloading data from the unit via gpsbabel or mtkbabel. You can directly download it here: http://gitorious.org/samatjain/gpxsplitter/blobs/raw/master/gpxsplitter.py but it's probably better to get it from the git repository, and read the other material about it: * Git repository: http://gitorious.org/samatjain/gpxsplitter * Blog announcement: http://blog.samat.org/2011/02/16/gpxsplitter-Split-GPX-files-with-their-waypoints * Wiki page (collects all information about the tool): http://wiki.samat.org/GpxSplitter There are probably any number of bugs.

Hallo Frederik, Demokratie in OSM: 1.
