On 3/18/2015 2:43 PM, Clifford Snow wrote: Since you are involved with updating the rendering, can you tell us the process to decide what should be rendered? I realize that part of it must be stylistic, but what outside influences cause you to include a tag as part of the standard rendered OSM tile? I should preface this by stating that these are my opinions, and I know other OpenStreetMap Carto maintainers look at it differently. They are also not the opinion of my employer, MapQuest, and the MapQuest Open style has different cartographic goals. There are no policies on what is rendered, and types of features are decided on a case by case basis. Normally the process of deciding to render a feature and deciding to render a particular tag are separate. You might decide you want to render bus stops, but also find that in the region you're rendering there is a GTFS feed with better data. In OpenStreetMap Carto, these two steps are more entwined. We're aiming at mappers and want to avoid additional sources of non-OSM data. A first consideration is technical. Some of the crazy relation types out there are not designed in a way that they can be reasonably rendered with a standard toolchain. If I can't figure out how to write the SQL to be able to get a data layer suitable for rendering, it almost certainly won't be rendered. I'm only interested in rendering established tags. The primary indicator of this is usage. There are some exceptions to this like national capitals, where there are only many of them. My view is that a tag should be able to obtain reasonable usage numbers on its own merits without being rendered. I also look beyond taginfo numbers to see if they are being skewed by a small number of contributors, mechanical edits, or a bulk import. We don't want to encourage difficult to consume tagging approach. This is why we will not use disused=yes. (#111) The wiki is a source I use, but just one among many. A good read is Andy's comment about changing tags: https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/230#issuecomment-29238913. It is related. And of course, all of this is done in a limited amount of available time. If I decide to work on something with the style it means I'm not working on a different part of it. It's zero sum for me, and I always have more I can work on. Rendering new types of features is about bottom of the priority list for me right now. Would you render a tag without a wiki entry, or with just a proposal? In principle, if it were an established tag? Yes. It's very unlikely an established tag would not have a wiki page. How does the fact that it may be useful to specific groups, ie, cyclists which has its own style impact your decisions? I don't particularly consider the presence of specialist styles. There are styles for most topical interests these days. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

No, the usual way is to give an area the highest admin_level (lowest nuber) of all possibilities. Eg: Berlin in Germany. It's city (al8), county (al6) and state (al4). so it has only AL4. Re: [Talk-us] USA Rail: Calling all OSM railfans! (especially in California)
Speaking of rail mapping: I noticed something that could use some attention. The key old_railway_operator=* is used ~90K times, but almost entirely in the US. [1] It has a *really* minimal wiki page. [2] And I don't see it mentioned on the main Railways page [3] or the US Railways project page [4]. (though I did see it on the California Railroads page you linked to) At minimum, I'm thinking some additional documentation would be good. Also wondering if the US OSM rail community is doing things differently from the rest of the world? Or maybe the rest of the world is still using their railroads! :) Thanks, Brad [1] http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/old_railway_operator [2] http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key%3Aold_railway_operator [3] http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Railways [4] http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_United_States/Railways On Wed, Mar 18, 2015 at 2:56 PM, stevea stevea...@softworkers.com wrote: http://wiki.osm.org/wiki/California/Railroads now documents an early alpha state of OSM rail in California. Also wondering if the US OSM rail community is doing things differently from the rest of the world? Or maybe the rest of the world is still using their railroads! :) Thanks, Brad Hi Brad: I have run into devotees of old_railway_operator=* and respect the tag by leaving it be where I encounter it, though I don't go out of my way to add it unless I have absolute positive knowledge of it (rarely to never). Along with other things historic it can ignite passion and arguments, yes. Suffice to say that it is important to the not-altogether-exclusively-USA concept of trackage rights which are sometimes complex leasing arrangements by rail owners and operators to allow mixes of freight and passenger services on given sets of rail infrastructure. The good news is that in the USA, the Surface Transportation Board makes all such trackage rights a matter of public record, so with some (tedious) work, we COULD properly tag all rail in the USA with a set of tags to reflect these complexities. However, it would be a lengthy, detailed task. This would, of course, begin with good documentation to do so, which you point out doesn't seem to exist. Precluding this, of course, is an OSM wiki volunteer with this knowledge (or can get it) who is also willing to brain-dump/channel it into proper wiki form. We might have that, we might not. I agree with you that it is a good call to make this more widely known -- there is LOTS in OSM that could use some attention. In California, rail is approximately early alpha. For the USA as a whole, I'd say rail is even before that, in an early development phase. It is rapidly getting better (over months/years, not days/weeks). Discussing (first) and then doing something about old_railway_operator=* (among other things) are going to chip away at even more improvement. That's just how it works. For example (perhaps I open a can of worms), our WikiProject United States railways says that for the most part, North American rail infrastructure has completely skipped route=tracks relations as documented in OpenRailwayMap, jumping right to route=railway relations. This might be OK, or it might not, as I have no idea what ramifications this might have on renderers or routing engines (if any). OK, we document it, and that's good. But...? Again, calling out to that intersection of OSMers and knowledgeable USA rail folks! We can untangle any mess or improve any lack of data in our map if we wish, but we must have excellent real world knowledge. Dne 18.3.2015 v 9:06 Marek Chlup napsal(a): Ahoj. Respektive proč se vlastně algoritmy o to snaží tuto rodinu vytvořit (protože render OSM dopravní to dělá i když ta relace neexistuje)? Respektive proč se vlastně algoritmy o to snaží tuto rodinu vytvořit (protože render OSM dopravní to dělá i když ta relace neexistuje)? Re: [OSM-talk] Voting on voting system for proposals
I would assume that in this phase of the OSM lifecycle most new tags would start in specialist renders. For example I expect that the current discussion about campgrounds camp_site=* leading to different types of campgrounds would be rendered in specialist renders for camping first and would be rendered to more general maps once they gain momentum. This makes it important that renderers can show raw attribute tags of namespace tags they show. In this way I can see if more information is hidden behind the symbol shown. On Thu, Mar 19, 2015 at 7:20 AM Paul Norman penor...@mac.com wrote: On 3/18/2015 2:43 PM, Clifford Snow wrote: Since you are involved with updating the rendering, can you tell us the process to decide what should be rendered? A good read is Andy's comment about changing tags: https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap- carto/issues/230#issuecomment-29238913. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Ahoj.
Interesting problems: * The Census staff got the news of sub-prime rate subdivisions. These were plated but are still farmland. It is too early to try and map the subdivision. * I added a sub-prime rate subdivision that had the grading in place with construction tags. The existing Tiger layers provided the names. * I found some areas that had explosive growth. I recall adding the areas because of interesting buildings, etc. The TIGER data still shows roads that have been removed via new development. For example a new commercial area has yellow TIGER roads going through a building. * The false positives that I saw were related to new construction--well it is several years old now. An area was developed. All the existing roads were removed and folded into the new development. The yellow lines remaining were, say, between the secondary road and the first road of the subdivision. The yellow road may have been the original alignment of the secondary or possibly a farm road. Yup. We're cautious and trust the TIGER data only where it coincides w/ imagery and there we trace off the imagery and don't just take the TIGER data. Sometimes you run into situations where you just don't know whether TIGER's right or the imagery (a lot of imagery is pretty old on Bing) - in these cases we just don't touch the data, maybe drop a note. There are also many places where TIGER is just flat out behind - an opportunity for community and government to work more closely together. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

Re: [Talk-us] Retagging hamlets in the US
I apologize for coming in so late on this thread. Looking at my small county, we have 55 place=hamlet according to an overpass query. (2007 for Washington State) I certainly recognize a number of these hamlets. I would hate to see them removed. I would like to see if any need to be updated to cities, for example Bow and Edison. I know for certain that Edison Station is used by locals to describe an intersection with some shops and restaurants. I doubt that more than a couple of dozen people live here. Maybe the problem is how we tag these areas. Instead of place=hamlet, maybe it should be place=known_to_locals_as. Looking at King County, especially Seattle, it appears that a number of the place=hamlet are actually neighborhoods. We have been reluctant to add neighborhood borders because of prior discussions on the mailing list which, in essence, believe that neighborhoods don't have defined borders. While I believe Seattle and others do have defined borders, I really don't want to fight this all over. My suggestion is to encourage people to clean up place=hamlet from local knowledge. I fully concur with Richard Weait that we need to attract more mappers. Also was grobes das jeder kann: Getreide/Rüben/Blattwerk.
Frederic. ___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr
[Talk-at] Wien - boundary=administrative
Hi, I am currently trying to solve an issue, how to assign streets to its respective cities. Little trouble is caused by Wien, because its relation boundary [1] has only admin_level=4. For correct city matching I would need admin_level=8 as well. For example in Prague - we have the same geometry for district (admin_level=4), county/Bezirk (admin_level=6) and city (admin_level=8). Would it be ok, if I added levels 6 and 8 to Wien as well? I have found a wiki page about your boundaries [2], but I dont understand if its on purpose.
