Most major routing systems use indeed real time traffic information today, collected by other users of their system and by cellphone networks But for that you need some kind of online connection. And my tablet has only wifi. So that may be practical to use in some cases (phones with a dataplan), you still need a general calculation which is not based on real time traffic info. And for that you can only use general terms with respect to speed and have to accept that the calculation will not be correct all the time. Perhaps in addition to the time spent at stop signs, lights, etc. there should be a cost associated with the cognitive effort and accident risk, to be minimized, so that staying on the highway is treated as the rational choice (that it probably actually is). Penalties and costs are the basis of routing engines, not distance and speed. That is why OSMAND (and OSRM) make such silly mistakes as routing from the motorway to an offramp and straight on to the onramp to join the same motorway. Because both have the same speed limit and the offramp is slightly shorter it would be faster? Wrong. Faster is not the issue. The cost for using an offramp should be higher than taking the motorway. Probably even the action of changing from a certain class of way to the _link class (or indeed any lower class) should incur a penalty. A posted speed limit is just that: a legal maximum speed, not an actual driven speed. And therefore of only limited use to a router. Sure, a road with a posted speed limit of 30 will be slower than one with 120, but it is wrong to assume that two roads with a speed limit of 120 will be equally fast and therefor the shortest is always the better. I too have the feeling that that notion does not live within the OSMAND developers (nor the OSMR developers). IMHO brouter.de does this very nicely. When I see that by tinkering with the costs of certain road classes I can get a bicycle route exactly like how I would drive it is an indication to me that it is a very life-like router. Re: [OSM-talk] [Talk-us] Am I mapping this wrong, or should the router be fixed for this?
It is more than sufficient for a time calculation to use the maximum speed, multiplied by some factor (smaller than 1), or even a fixed speed per road class. My car navigation has this (there are three speeds I can set) and usually the time is correct within a few minutes. Much better is virtually impossible to achieve since you don't know how much traffic there is on the road so you can not predict waiting times at traffic lights or junctions. But again: the duration of a route has nothing to do with the actual route calculation. You first calculate the route based on cost factors and then calculate the time you need based on speed profiles. Maarten On 2015-07-30 21:24, Colin Smale wrote: I assume you are talking about typical speeds, and not a practical maximum. A max speed will almost never be achieved, by definition actually as the vehicle speeds will have a certain distribution. The highest recorded speed will be the de facto practical maximum, assuming the driver survived. Routers could take account of hundreds of variables in their calculation of predicted journey time from A to B, but in practice their calculations make assumptions for most of them. For example, most of them assume the vehicle is a car, that it is technically not limited to any particular speed, that the weather is perfect, that it is daytime, that the driver is not inexperienced. And then there are the other volatile variables like traffic density, road works, oversize loads getting in the way etc. Routers cannot take everything into account (this would preclude a lot of preprocessing to simplify the real-time calculations), so they use heuristics which work most often. In any event, a routing engine for boats could use the presence of a dam or weir (combined with the absence of a lock) to deduce that ship navigation was not possible. 'This way used should point in the direction of water flow' is only applicable to non-tidal flows, and reservoirs may well control water flow in a way that makes a 'water flow map' somewhat difficult to deduce. Only if they are entirely artificial. A dam in a river or stream makes the direction of water very clear: high to low. Only when there is an artificial reservoir with no natural tributary it is not clear. The use of 'routable network' is rather ambiguous, but this is little different to the problem of routing through other land based open areas where several waterway features link into an area of open water. The jury is still out on putting in all the paths through the area, but if there is a navigable route designated through a water body it should be drawn, but an imaginary link just showing water flow should not be necessary? Any routing process should be able to deduce the relation, there is no need to draw it. Causality. Does a water area need a way indicating the direction of water? However, as most fellow US mappers know, they almost never have 'speed limits' posted for them, and that seems to help cause problems in some routing programs when they give those slip lanes a speed limit higher than the main highway. Anyways, I've been using OSMAnd recently for occasional offline routing on my tablet and have come across weird routing (I'd like to call them 'bugs') at some intersections that have 3+ traffic lights nodes at them because of the roads being divided. Here, OSMAnd routes me onto a slip lane, makes a U-Turn on the side road, and then continues the across the main road to accomplish what a simple 'left turn' could have done [1], all to avoid '1' traffic light node. So, I go report the 'bug' on the OSMAnd Google group [2], and then somebody forwards it to the GitHub site [3]. In the response I get back on GitHub, one of the maintainers of OSMAnd says it's a 'map data' issue and closes it. Claims that in the 'maneuver', since it avoids an extra traffic light node, it's the shortest route, even though it does that funky U-Turn. Say what?! I mean, honestly, if both MapQuest Open OSMR can do that left turn 'normally' without needing to make a funky U-Turn, something has to be wrong in OSMAnd, right?? Sure, there isn't a 'NO U-Turn' sign posted for this maneuver, but still, the routing engine shouldn't be suggesting it since there isn't a 'NO Left Turn' relation there preventing the left turn from McKnight SB to Siebert EB. So, that leads me to my question. Does anybody think I've tagged the intersection incorrectly? This is how I've been tagging intersections like this from since the start, and I know most other US mappers have been doing the same. Or should I start adding 'false' U-Turn restrictions to prevent the routing bugs and then be called out as 'tagging for the router', or even maybe start putting traffic light nodes at the stop lines for intersections that have both roads divided (and just leave simple one-node intersections as-is)? I'm very curious to see what others have to say about this to see how I'll move forward when I map in the future. The question here is, in a case when a name:xx isn't widely used in the place and doesn't appear on signs*, how can a user of the data know that they've got there or not? The problem is that there is a third way of writing a place name. Namely the internationalized name of the place in the alphabet that you use. Beijing is Peking in Dutch, but we commonly use Beijing these days. Other countries (Germany, France) are still more prone to using their transliteration. For example: I do not want to see a map that shows name:nl for every place. Some are very obscure and may not be understood, others are more common but are just not used in normal life. I want to see name, but for non-Latin alphabets I probably want name:en. But it should not be a big challenge to identify the character set that's used in a string, so it should also not be very difficult to know when to show name and when to show name:en. On the other hand: for showing a map on my navigation device, I want to see what is on the signposts. So it all depends on the usage. OSM shouldn't be it's own parallel universe - we map what's on the ground. Am I correct in thinking that your idea is not to have things that are not on the ground in OSM? The problem with this is: to have translations by having to look up every name on an external website is not a very workable solution. That means having to load the complete database of that website before you do anything, or accept massive latencies for each lookup. [OSM-talk] a, b and c.tile.openstreetmap.org refer to the same server?
Is it normal that the a, b and c.tile.openstreetmap.org IP-adresses refer to the same server? For me, they all refer to amsterdam.tile.openstreetmap.org and for some reason it is not responding very well (lots of read times out messages in JOSM). My reasoning was in analogy to a street with compulsory-use cycle lanes with tags like: highway=residential| bicycle=no cycleway=lane example: http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/7036100 [1] I am with Martin on this and I think that is a perfect example of how not to map it. From the cycleway wikipage: A cycle lane is an inherent part of the road itself. So setting anything globally for the road means it is also implied for the cyclelane. If you set bicycle=no for a road that has cycleway=lane and you want to allow bicycles on that lane, you should add cycleway:bicycle=yes to it. As Phil pointed out, there may be cyclelanes that are prohibited for bicycles. But what does bicycle=no and cycleway=lane mean? Usually cycleway=lane means that there is a lane on the way that is accesible for bicyles. But putting bicycle=no on that way IMHO means that routing for bicycles on that way is prohibited, irregardless of there being a bicyclelane. Maarten ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be

I'm getting bored of my OSM time being taken up chasing after users who are semi-deliberately adding errors. There are good fixes from these kinds of services. One were the source is maintained elsewhere and OSM is nothing more than a combination of all those databases ? I don't think anyone is claiming that. You seem to be fond of exaggerations. Are we going to a Google-like model were ordinary mappers cannot change stuff and see the result immediately ? Will everything have to be approved by the original data source ? Are those the kind of questions that the OSM-future group is thinking about ? I sure hope not. Another, related question is how do you want to deal with updates on BAG data now. Can a (tourist) mapper change the building outline or remove it ? Or will it be reverted with the next BAG update when the change is not reported back to BAG ? That's what I've read on the forum when I reported the mistake. OSM can be changed by everyone who has registered. So yes, a tourist mapper can change BAG data. Yes, a lot is wrong there. Unclosed areas, multipolygons that don't add up, unconnected nodes that belong to waterways that are there, waterways that are cut up in strange pieces that should connect but don't. And to top it off it doesn't line up nicely with bing maps, so fixing it is a bit of a puzzle. But I'm doing some now. The thing is that if you add something as a tag in wikipedia ({{tag|maxspeed|15}}), you'll automatically get a link to a wiki page for that tag. And since it is pretty senseless to have a seperate page for every different speed limit, they are redirected to a general page about the maxspeed tag. I would leave them in. Re: [OSM-talk] Incorrect speed limit anonymous notes - who is behind that?
On 2014-08-16 01:48, Andreas Vilén wrote: This continues to be really annoying, and the obvious spam seems to cluster at a few locations, where 10-20 notes can be created with the same information. The maker of this app must be made clear that notes can't work like this, and users would at least be required to give some contact information. Most of the notes that come from this app are useless and will probably stay in the database forever. And the notes may be anonymous, but IMHO it is prudent to put in the message or the metadata which app reported it. That way you don't have to go on a wild goose chase to see where it is coming from. Steve C told me he doesn't keep any, so I'm throwing a wide net to the community for help. If you can supply some images, please give me a frame of reference to what the images shows and when. [OSM-talk-nl] BAG import nacontrole
Groeten, Maarten ___ Talk-nl mailing list Talk-nl@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-nl

I entered my daily commute (from 51.3207,5.9888 to 51.5428,5.9827, permalink does not work properly) and it comes with a (for me new) route of 18.3 miles (=29.45 km) in 2:02. If I move the route to what I actually do, I get 17.9 miles and 1:59. And there are no paths or tracks in either route. and if you log in, you can save/share your planned routes (and change your user preferences from miles to km ). Do you really have to create an account just for that? Miles is a very UK and US thing, it is not used anywhere on mainland europe. Can't you just use km when you plan a route on mainland europe or set a cookie? Regards, Maarten ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

The route it chooses has an off-road cycleway for more of the route (all the way to Eijkenhofweg) and then highway=unclassified (Steegse Peelweg), whereas the 17.9-mile route has more highway=tertiary (Loorban and Veulenseweg). In general cycle.travel prefers a balanced route using traffic-free and quiet roads, rather than just trying to find the shortest or quickest route along busier roads. So, can't I just ask shortest or quickest road? As you say, the router has no idea about traffic levels. I mean, if a router can't give me either shortest or quickest, then I always think I get some random route that is not optimal in any aspect.
