Note that every account has an account.srb file too. Those store the
account filters and you should leave them alone, the file in the mail
 directory stores the common filters.

Thanks for all those details on the other two approaches -
I've color coded that message and parked it - just in case.

Deleting both the ACCOUNT.SRB and ACCOUNT.SRX from the Mail

I'm still getting a pair of errors, that were part of more

I'll start a separate thread on those messages.

Power Outage Destroyed Operation of Common Filters

2008-07-01 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB User Discussion List,

Sunday, I added several new sorting office incoming filters to my
usual account. I failed to shut down TB after doing this and just
left my computer in Stand By mode over night.

We had a power outage Monday while my computer was on (it lasted
longer than the battery). When I restarted, every seemed fine until I
tried a Read messages filter from the Common Filters account.
Ctrl-Shift-X, which normally deletes a message both locally and on the
server, didn't work.

When I checked my sorting office, I noticed that the new (added
Sunday) incoming filters filters were missing! I then checked the
Common Filters - there were my new filters from my account. I moved
them, one at a time, from the Common Filters to my account. I had to
close and open TB each time or I received an unrecoverable error
message and had to shut down TB with Task Manager.

Now my Common Filters have this odd structure. I've rebooted WinXP to
no avail.

Incoming mail
Outgoing mail
Moving In Hooks
Selective Download
Read messages
Replied messages
Outgoing mail
Read messages
Replied messages
Selective Download

Note that all the high level filters (except Incoming mail) are
repeated in Incoming mail along with Moving In Hooks and there are
not in there normal sorted order.

I can add, say, a Read messages filter to Common Filters - but it
doesn't work.

How can I fix my Common Filters so they work again?

Thanks for listening.

What changes to I have to make to TB to get this to work - I

I'm not familiar with X-ray so I might be totally wrong but...
You did remember to set TB! to localhost (or 127.0.0.1) as Mail server?

Now that sounds familiar. No I didn't change it - that wasn't
mentioned anywhere in the X-Ray readme file.

I just tried it out - thanks, that worked!

I remember from some time ago that TB! gets problems with too many
conditions in a filter. No-one could tell the exact limit, but it turned
out to be a solution to use address book groups for this. So the filter
only needs to check if an address is in a certain group instead of
checking *all* conditions (addresses) every time. Maybe you can use this
 approach too.

Whether it searches a list or an address book doesn't appear
to raise performance issues.

I was surprised you mentioned address books (or groups),
given that I have generic names like @abc where I want to
catch [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] I tried out your
suggestion but it didn't work.

My filter is working fine, but doesn't display for editing.
I edited the filter, by copying and pasting to my editor
another item to the list. I pasted from my editor to the
Sorting Office and tried it out - perfect!

But this is a clumsey way to edit the Sorting Office :-)

Yes, it is from received patches for Vim. Unix users are

Does it show if you select to display 'Always'? If not, it may be that,
for some reason, it is being displayed off screen. In this case, check
the Registry 'Left' and 'Top' values in:

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!\Ticker

and set them both to zero. This should bring the Ticker to the top left

Create an outgoing filter that checks whether the sent message has the

that filter execute your preferred action: deleting, moving to a

IIRC the help file predates the subfilters, so you're out
of luck. Basically subfilters act the same as ordinary
filters, they only act upon messages that have triggered
 their parent filter.

Hmm, they've been around a long time. Perhaps it's time for
Ritlabs to add a small help section?

That parent doesn't need to have enabled the option
'continue processing with other filters' in order to have
 its subfilters to be processed.

Outstanding! That just what I wanted to lookup. Thanks.

There used to be some issues with regard to common
subfilters. I don't know whether they're solved yet, so
you might do best to avoid those.

Good to know, I'll avoid them.

Deterioration over time of Export Text

2007-02-17 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB User Discussion List and TB Beta List,

I started keeping a log of all message filtering back on
July 29, 2003. I did this by adding an Export the message
action.

I use default settings (Plain text and Append to existing
file). For the Template I have (for this group):

%Date=yymmddhhnnss tbudl

This produces a line for each message containing a time
stamp followed by a short name for the last filter the mail
went through.

So from 2003 through most of August 5, 2006, it had one
entry per line for each message filtered.

But late in the day of 8/5/06, it began double spacing all
of the lines! I changed nothing, except probably the
version of The Bat!.

Then on February 5, 2007, all hell broke lose! Looking at
the last double spaced entry and the first wacky format:

070205160609 spam^M
^M
[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL
PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@ [EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL
PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is how my editor (Gvim) displays it. It uses unix
format for this mess (lines end with a LF) and ^M is how it
shows the CR. The ^@ is a hex 00. This looks like some
style of Unicode.

If the above is confusing, here's how those two lines look
in a hex dump:

0033 8d50 0d 0a 30 37 30 32 30 35 31 36 30 36 30 39 20 73 ..070205160609 s
0033 8d60 70 61 6d 0d 0a 0d 0a 30 00 37 00 30 00 32 00 30 pam0.7.0.2.0
0033 8d70 00 35 00 31 00 36 00 31 00 31 00 35 00 31 00 20 .5.1.6.1.1.5.1.
0033 8d80 00 73 00 70 00 61 00 6d 00 0d 00 0a 00 0d 0a 30 .s.p.a.m...0

I can easily convert my 200,000 line file back to normal.
But how can I get The Bat! to write Plain Text files again?

I have copied the beta group because I believe the February
change to wacky text was in a beta release.

That's what I have. Am I looking at an outdated page?

Thomas, this came up when I asked a question on the Vim
mailing list (Vim is my editor and comes with many 'nix
systems). I had noticed that Gvim (the graphical version)
does not map such key combos as Alt-Ctrl-letter. Some
thought it was because Windows was grabbing the keystrokes.

I pointed out that The Bat! could work with such key combos
so this wasn't a Windows problem. A response I received
was:

I don't know how TheBat! gets its special-key keyboard
input (raw or cooked for instance). IIUC, Vim uses
cooked keyboard input, which is more portable across
platforms and keyboard layouts, but is less powerful
for complex key combinations since there is an
additional software layer between the keyboard
hardware and the program -- and that can conceivably
lead to loss of information if the user presses a key
combo not foreseen (or discarded as not meaningful)
   by the translation software.

This is why I asked if The Bat! used raw or cooked keyboard
handling. I am hoping that it uses cooked with APIs that
can handle all combinations with Alt, Ctrl and Shift. Maybe
that's not possible - I don't know.

Can you explain briefly - in layman's terms - what the
 effect for the user is?

As the Vim user mentioned, the cooked keyboard handling uses
an addition software layer - a higher level API call. The
higher the level, the lower the flexibility to the user.
For example, I can't define a map to Alt-Ctrl-z in Gvim, but
I can easily define Alt-Ctrl-z as a Bat! shortcut.

GoldED has a basic text editor built-in, rather like TB's. But it also
allowed you to define your own text editor, run as a child process,
feeding the editor with the properly-quoted and reflowed message. I
dislike Windows-style editors. Having grown up with DOS, I prefer
WordStar-style. Does TB have any way of defining an external text
editor, so I can continue using my favourite one?

I have on occasion copied a message via the clipboard and edited it
outside TB, before returning the modified text the same way. I tended
to get shark's teeth formatting, whether I used straight paste or
paste formatted. What should I look out for here, please?

When I want to view a long email or program snippet from my
editor, I use a Hot Key to Run External Program. I have it
run my editor on the file %1 and call a macro to strip the
headers and everything at or below the cut mark. (If I
need any of that, I can get it back with an undo.)

I use PowerPro to copy the text of a reply to the clipboard
and start my edit with a command to paste the clipboard. I
also have a simple macro in the editor to finish up by
copying the contents of its buffer to the clipboard and
close down discarding the file being edited. All I have to
do is bring focus back to the TB! replay (which is still
highlighted) and press Ctrl-v and sent it.

Yes: both programs have the facility to collect mail but
not delete it from the server. So you would set one to do
that - collect email using that one first; then collect
with the other which would delete the email from the
 server.

An alternative, which may be simpler to administer, is to
set OE to not delete from the server and set TB to keep mail
on the server for, say, 7 days. That way there would be no
concern of which mail client was used first. As long as OE
was used at least once per week, both clients would receive
all the mail.

this tab is pre-defined and when You create new tabs, You

 disable them in View menu.

I use tabs but don't have any need for a tab that is

I don't mind having a tab called All if I have some control

tab All uses setting of selected folder, what You set for this folder,
that will be displayed when You select All tab.

Thanks for the explanation!

I have my own All Mail tab that shows all mail read or
unread. If I'm on that tab and switch folders, the folder
settings take over, but that tab is still in focus (even

cause the All tab to take focus when a folder is changed.

Currently, if I'm on All Mail and switch folders, I must
click on another tab then click on All Mail to get that

Bayesit! Confusion

2006-07-13 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB Users and Beta Lists,

I had been using Bayesit! for a few years with fairly good
success on my laptop. About two months ago, my laptop
developed a hardware problem and I switched to my wife's
desktop (XP Pro SP2).

I have been training Bayesit! from scratch and have had it
catch nothing :-(

Turning on logging, I discovered that Bayesit! appeared a
bit confused. From my log file:

C:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesitbase\spamdict.bye
C:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesitbase\nspamdict.bye
Spam frequency dictionary:
Error loading file. May be it is corrupted or lost.
Non-spam frequency dictionary:
Error loading file. May be it is corrupted or lost.
Dictionary didn't load. Continue in training mode...
No current recalculation session. Silent exiting...

There is, of course, no such bayesitbase subdirectory.
Looking at the Bayesit! configuration (under Basic filter's
options), I noticed that I had browsed to
c:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesit for the working directory.
When I manually added the trailing backslash, the log file
showed me that it could now find both spamdict.bye and
nspamdict.bye.

That was just a few days ago and Bayesit! has still not
found any spam (I guess training is just starting now).

However, looking at the Information page is see:

Spam frequency dictionary:
C:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesit\\base\spamdict.bye
Size: 1386 letters.
Capacity: 81940 words.
Non-spam frequency dictionary:
C:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesit\\base\nspamdict.bye
Size: 13135 letters.
Capacity: 649383 words.
Current active dictionary:
Currently active dictionary contains 155617 words.
Status: OK

Please notice the '\\' in those filenames.

Anyone else seeing these problems?

I am currently running the most recent announced beta,
although I do not believe this is a beta issue - so I am
including both mailing lists.

Watch Replies In has not been fully functioning since
3.5.00. One needs to keep an older thebat.exe handy to
mark new messages. 3.5.25 will then find new replies
but requires manually refreshing.

Many shortcuts are not possible with the new

The help feature is back at 3.0 still - i.e. the help

Entering a folder with no previously read message -
such as the Junk mail folder - shows no message in
the auto-view window. So, instead of using my hotkey

first change my focus to the message list - either my
having to click on a message or a multi keystroke such
as Tab followed by up-arrow.

This feature appears to be not working in 3.5.

I had a watched folder. However, when I attempted to
watch a message, the only choice I had was to create a
new folder. I played along and added a new folder with
the same name as the old folder - that gave me two :-)

I deleted both of these chat folders and started
over. That sort of worked - a folder was created under
the folder from which I was reading. I moved it to be
with my other virtual folders - I couldn't remove the
watched email.

I deleted that folder and created a new chat folder.
Watch Replies In can't find it :-(

Is this feature working for anyone? If so, what's the

3.5: View | Toolbars | Customization Bug and Missing Items

2005-05-15 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB User Discussion List,

This feature appears to have been added at the last
minute without any significant testing.

Using this feature more than once in a session usually
results in an empty white box after View | Toolbars -
cannot even get to customization.

Many items are missing. Even the ability to add a
shortcut to View | Toolbars | Customize :( Sure, I can
do an Alt-VTC - unless the little white box stops
access.

I was able to get most of my shortcuts implemented -
none ported from my previous implementation (the last
real beta before Ritlabs went Alpha in the Beta testing
group). The problem was always missing items in the
new tool.

Actually I don't. Please inform me!

To see what filter actions would be taken, without
actually taking them, you can use the Test filters
feature.

Let's look at your input filters. Right click on any
message. Choose Test filters from the drop down

click OK.

You'll be rewarded with a dialog that shows how your
incoming filters would deal with that message when
received. Enjoy!

While receiving - not with TheBat alone. You need an external program for
that. Maybe www.xrayapp.com will work for you.

This has been a TB! feature request for years. While
using xray is good advice, the job can be done without
it.

Basically, you export the message, delete it,
manipulate the exported message and import it back to
TB! Missing from TB! is a FullFolderName macro.
FolderName does not give enough information for
importing to non-root folders.

If one's TB! folders are uniquely named, it's possible
to write a mapping so importing to the proper folder is
possible.

How to get rid of Resent-from?

2004-11-06 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB User Discussion List,

One annoyance of redirect is that it adds a
Resent-from header field. In my case, I'm usually
redirecting things, for my wife's attention, to her.
It ends up improperly filtered on her end - because it
looks like it's from me (an X-Sender is generated).

I've tried to get rid of this TB! created problem by
writing a QT to be executed inside the redirected mail.
I tried both:

%SetHeader(Resent-from,)
and
%SetHeader(Resent-from:,)

[I've defined this header field using the ':' for the
Display as field, and without the ':' in the RFC field.
I'm not sure which one SetHeader needs ;-( ]

It doesn't work. The annoying header field continues
to appear.

How is this done?

Spell Checker Request

2004-11-06 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB User Discussion List,

Two minor enhancements would make the spell checker
more user friendly:

(1) Add a `Mail anyway` dialog to `Cancel`. As it is,
when one mails, say source code, with many spelling
errors one has to either turn off spell checking or
click on `Ignore all` many times.

(2) Have an option, perhaps under `Check before
Send/Queue` that disables the `OK` dialog at the end of
spell checking.

BTW, when I moved from NC to TX a few months ago, I had

All 9 of my accounts were back to normal - although I

Bug Report: /importf=The Bat!

2004-10-23 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB User Discussion List,

When I attempt to import mail to any folder that is not
directly off an account, the mail ends up in the Inbox.
It should be finding a subfolder with a valid name.

On my system, The Bat! folder is located under the
Lists folder.

Obviously, I can write /importf=Lists\The Bat!. That
works. The problem is that I'm writing this stuff from
without TB! using macros. I can get the correct user
name with %AccountName. However %FolderName only
returns the rightmost part of the actual folder name.

The bug is that you can't use /importf without a full
folder name AND TB! macros don't appear to provide a
macro that will delivery the full name.

An Export Message template that contains:

/importu=%AccountName;f=%FolderName;...

to write a batch file should actually import mail to
the correct folder when that batch file is executed.

Perhaps there should be a %FullFolderName macro?

Bug? Failure of Macros to Expand

2004-10-21 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB User Discussion List,

I've posted this to the beta list, but didn't get a
response. So I thought I'd try here :-)

Attempting to pass the folder name (or any other macro)
to a batch file, the macro is not expanding. For
example, a filter with the Execute action and command
line:

   c:\test_bat.cmd %FolderName

receives %FolderName - not expanded to the actual
folder name. Is there some trick to get the macro to
expand? Or is this a bug?

You need to create the lists yourself.

First go to Options/Preferences/Anti-spam, click on
BayesIt! and click Configure.

Under Options, put your Working directory someplace
different from your BayesIt! program directory - I
place mine under Mail as in:

c:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesit

Now click OK and choose Rules to create your white and
black lists. For example, I specify my moderated lists
(such as TB! lists) in my whitelist. I only have a
few entries in my blacklist for things I'm sure are
always spam. I don't use ignorelist.

The white list of kludges is copied, by the program,
to this same directory. I've left that alone.

Otherwise, you can simply copy and paste to your
