No, its 99% sure a file the bat is trying to write to/create and cannot.
You could run a find over your system, search for files modified the
last day and see whats there impacting the bat.
Check the drive on space available (!!!), files being write protected
(unlikely).
Maybe even a temp directory being corrupted/filled up.

Well, but depending on what crashes you might be able to see whats
happening.
How much space left, swapfile how big and what drive?

in the bat obviously, the mailfolders.

Seems more likely a file maintenance/os error then a bat error
secondly if your mail is stuck, use anything else to download so at
least you get your mail and feel better.
Any other crashes from other programs???

Thirdly, have you checked all your directories?. maybe a file is
present which is supposed to be overwritten and which is write
protected.
Or a Anti virus program being triggered while downloading.
as it is, your error seems to say what it is, a file is being created
and cannot. So its something, no space, write protected, too many
files in a box which prevents it.
You could install the BAT in a different place and download from there
and see if it works.
As said above, to me its an OSfile maintenance error

Sendmail for windows exists and they also have Perl and other stuff.
No idea if it works, I have never tried it.
On the other hand several programs have the smtp build in, Speedmail
is one of them (I still have a beta somewhere), and some spamming mail
programs also use them. Again I probably have some of them...
At least I think I used one for my mailing list last year...

Agreed, I think the whole interview was meant to make us discuss what
we think of several proposals. NOT a review of what is written
already
They want the feedback on what to put in and what not
NOT to discuss whats already in it
Many answers indicated that they can do things in very different ways
and they arent sure yet.
This means to me the program is still very much in the design stage
and it could take them another 3 months before it looks like anything
we want to use...

HTML editing, 100% against it...
Let them do it in Notepad (g) if they want/can.

I would like to see a newsreader though, but not merged as anything
multi threading / multiserver would speed my gathering of files/news
up. Essentially system throughput from the news server is better.
But I wouldnt want it in the mail program.

Whats wrong with v1.x which is unbearable??

I think the whole interview was more to evoke reactions then to tell
us what really happens as it seems to me a significant amount of code
hasnt even been written yet...
it wouldnt surprise me if a real beta could be a 3 months away unless
you want to talk about running real buggy stuff.

As long as the emailer part works fine, relatively bug free and in the
way I want, I donot HAVE to use a newsreader or whatever part and 30k
of code is not interfering with my mail...

On the other hand, a lot of people may not want to upgrade to use a
version where the improvments are things they donot want to use.
It would have to be a real good newsreader to get me to switch from
Agent. Besides I already paid for it so why change.
HTML: Its difficult to avoid not having it as an email client, but on
the other hand if it supports external editors, what does it matter.
Can you imagine anyone using notepad or whatever to write an email in
html?? Or Multiedit/Ultraedit or whatever one likes...
I am more interested in not having to receive them in HTML.

Yes, but is it for the average user easier then just adding filters??
While I donot mind a more elegant/complex setup myself, my experience
sofar with computers is that the easier and simpler and splitup a
suggested route is, the less chance the users end up messing it up
causing in most cases Me extra work...
And I myself am distinctly lazy when it comes to doing things like
this... ie, if it works: fine, if I get annoyed by it, and that happens
more and more, then I will sit down and revamp my setup.

Steve> Took me <1 minute to make that pseudo code. Takes me about the same time
Steve> to make one filter. I have over 30 lists on my two accounts. ~30 minutes
Steve> compared to ~1 minute. Which is faster agian? :)

So whats the exact setup you use with the Bat? ie with real code?
I donot mind plugging it in , adjusting it to what I use and see if it
works better or not.
I am very felxible when it comes to dumping my way of doing things if
I see a better way exists which works...

And will your setup do something I want to do, ie dump mail which has
sender=receiver etc?
I have some more spam left to get rid off!

I tend to filter out what I want to keep so if all goes correct after
running through my filter list it ends up in the end being zapped as
spam or other stuff I donot want and anything passing the lot is
ending up in the inbox.
I would say check the order of your filters as the more strict you can
make the ones to KEEP stuff, the better the chance that whats left is
unwanted.
And easier to check on.
I get maybe one/2 spams per day at present and I get now at least 450
emails per day thanks to this list and a few linux lists getting close
to a v7 release...
Very little left I donot want and I just keep those in case the bat v2
allows me to zap more like sender=receiver (almost certainly spam!!).
Ideal to stick all that undesirable stuff together in a folder as you can then
refilter on it without hitting NEW mail you would want to keep while
experimenting...
So move that maildemon stuff you donot want to a directory and
experiment what you need to refilter with to get rid of it and test it with
some copied emails as well.
Normally I first copy during tests (saves me recreating the file) and
when that works I make it zap, run it over my spam folder and if it
gets killed, as it should, well thats one more...

ref crashing on expanding the bat on install

2000-01-09 Thread tracer

Sunday, January 09, 2000

Hello Bat-users,

A while ago someone had this problem and I had this problem today.
That Italian box I mentioned before found its way back to me..
Totally unstable and after I replaced the motherboard it was worse.
Considering I expected to be paid for an hours work and a board and
it cost me all afternoon, I wasnt happy!
After messing around, rebuilding his system, etc, I removed one pair of his ram
strips and
  problem disappeared...
So presumably he had blown a ramstrip or strips AND a hard disk and
  a serial port..
Whatever, if anyone gets this problem on trying to install the bat
or the language pack, misbehaving ram can be a reason... Doesnt have
to be a virus when you get a crc error!!

No idea, I use one filter per mailing list and send them to folders
in an account which will never dial out or in called mailing lists...
As far as I can see you have no way of getting all mailing lists in
one go and if you could it would cost me a LOT more time making the
expression then to make an extra filter...

Nothing prevents you to generate multiple accounts from the same

send via different servers out, with different masks to replay with.
Just donot download the same server with both accounts wanting same

maybe but I have the suspicion that a horrible mess could result..
As Steve said, merging mail to split it up again is the wrong way to
do it.
But you need suitable destination mail boxes for your usage.
After that filter and consider that your bulky stuff should be tackled
first, makes it easier.
After that you can filter to any box in any account (whereever you
want). The acount doesnt even have to be unique, could be
a duplicate of another one but with different settings.

If your incoming mail is organised it saves you a lot of work and you
can see that certain boxes have mail but arent important so you just
leave them till later.
The simpler your filters the better they will work. I have no need for
regular expressions on them (g)

Thats what I expected so essentially compuserve doesnt need a slow
local dialin over in our case a 2400 line to sabotage it. Just dial in
with any local usp and when on line use the compuserve software...
Like with the AOL
Thanks, I never had a compuserve customer here so I didnt know...

Thomas while this in itself is a useful option we need a better
archive system where the archive doesnt automatically get opened, is accessible when
needed and per folder and can be selected per folder to have backup
criteria set.
If setup correctly you wouldnt have to do much manual backups and the
bat would be opening fast.
Esssentially the current setup is unsuitable for hundreds of emails
per day unless one goes and uses tricks. which really shouldnt be
required.
In adition a smooth working backup system is a good selling point.

Thomas, not sure about Compuserve, as I never had the chance to use
the system but as you will know AOL has a different setup, even worse.
if you want to use it in Thailand it means essentially calling
Singapore...
By pure accident I ended up with a macintosh customer who had been
setup for AOL in the states and thus wanted a local account..
After a few weeks his mac stuff kind of corrupted and he wanted to go
to the web but no way could I get the normal dialin to work to the
local isp.
So I changed the dialin for AOl to call the local isp number and ip's.
He ended up logging in locally, zapped off to AOL and then via the AOL
webmenu we went to hotmail where his mail was sitting...

I did it again on a PC which was working ok and as far as I know if
you AOL HAS been setup and is working, nothing prevents you to use a
local dialin and then run your AOL browser to do whatever you want to
do in AOL.
Ok, you pay for AOL and local isp (maybe, as I never had the chance
to check that as I never saw bills...).
Presumably one gets stuck for the minimum charge..

Anyway, there is absolutely NO need for long distance calls, slow
lines and local censorship or whatever keeps a local dialin for AOL
away.
If this same trick works with Compuserve, no idea, try it...
My customers were happy as it saves them fortunes as all their mail
was going AOL, they travelled and they wanted to keep it that way!

Thomas> With my ISP's (including this IBM.com), they limit the server space
Thomas> you can use, not the number of messages. By the way, can you FTP into
Thomas> your account and save files on the server?

Most accounts, no idea about compuserve , let you do that if you know
where the mailbox is.
I use it all the time for ftp.
I even used it to get my betas of 98 downloaded that way...

My expartner had this bad habit and several people knowing more then
one of my email accounts..
I have essentially their boxes setup in one place and if anyone sends
me an email to the wrong account and he has a folder to be stored in,
I just add him a filter to that folder in the other account.
Result, he gets answered from the correct account...
I see nothing complicated on the few emails going to the wrong place
to get an filter added.

More important I think is that the current backup system is lousy and
inadequate...
I am sure you could think of a better system involving a few changes
in the bat for people with a lot of mail so that the program opens
snappy but hasnt got all the old data there unless its needed.

The way I handle my incoming mail and I am sure it can be improved, is
to make all or most regular incomings a filter so they go to their

many isps in the USA and elswhere refuse relaying.
problem is if they get a spammer to use them they go into a database
and then it means all their ip's are considered spamming IP's and
thats a big headache.
Ofcourse there are servers allowing relaying but it requires in many
cases some tricks to use them and users of this system are unlikely to
broadcast the servers allowing it
At least I wouldnt.
There are servers where you need a logon and password to send as well

I use dialer 2000... That louches the bat and/or whatever else I want.
Its i think the only proper way if you do multiple things at the same
time, ie, arange the dialing in separate from the programs using it.

Not sure it does AGP4, I will have to ask, our main problem was very
lousy docs with the motherboard but after the misunderstanding was out
of the way it runs great.
I wouldnt buy an Intel made motherboard, I have really never seen one
which didnt have problems and they will for sure prevent any
overclocking attempt.
Added, those with rambus have been redesigned to handle sdram and get
a performance hit so it runs slower then the BX...

Aopen has the DMA66 in the Bios as far as I saw...

Syafril> Thanks for the advise.

If possible try testing your existing sdram on a system running 133 as if it
works.. you get a real fast system.
I have a suspicion that with a stable motherboard/processor you may find that
even standard sd100 ram can do that 133.
Mine does and I love a cheap coppermine 700 and its so cool
(temperature wise) that no way will I get Amd's needing expensive fans
on the processor and extra big powersupplies.
It eats up any potential price advantage of the AMD...

there is a shareware one, it was used to detect StarCraft
contacting its server if it was on the net telling them what was on
your system.
Obviously a cracked version was used to detect it but thats still
circulating on the web.

On the other hand you can try AtGuard, which is an easy firewall and it
should tell you what it wants to contact.

maybe their intended option is meant different, a language problem or

I would recommend first adding the ram and then seeing what happens.
You need 2 drives anyway and if you want more speed, you could be
better off buying some UDMA 66 drives and a new board then buying the
scsi drives of high speed. Latest AOPEN can do almost any chips (with
risercards) and runs about S$150.
A friend just got one and while the setting up took him a bit of time,
it now runs a coppermine 500 at 700, UDMA drives run about
16mb/sec Board will also run a celeron /P2 so its a nice way to
upgrade and MUCH cheaper then high speed scsi!
Donot forget you need at least 2 drives anyway

you wouldnt want them... Its one of the reasons why in the far East
almost everybody has gone VCD. And even cd's get fungus...
You borrow/rent one cd with fungus and all you tapes get it.
It also is a reason why original import tapes and cd's donot sell
well as nobody would give you a replacement for a useless cd or tape.
Copied movies sell for about $3 and even then these eternal cd's last
about a year.
Its not a joke, same with floppy disks, a drive lasts about a year
with new disks, zip is the same.
Disks themselves last about 3 months...
I have a scsi zip drive but exactly one disk
Its the humidity/heat, being near to the see etc.
Its also a main reason why hard disks fail here as heat makes them
expand, degrades the rubber seals and you would be amazed how many
people go for a few days vacation and come back to a dead hard disk.

Roel> hmmm, with a bit of bacon, eggs & a few sliced tomatoes :-)

VCR SETTING:
If your VCR has a year setting on it, which
most do, you will not be able to use the programmed
recording feature after 12/31/99.
Don't throw it away Instead, set it for the year 1977 (the days are
the same as the year 2000.)

At least thats what I am told, I donot use a VCR anymore, all my tapes
got fungus!

If you install Dr Web and just use the return key to install the
thing, you end up with a Russian program.
This by the way is a trick one can use with many programs as most will
happily produce some kind of working installed product by selecting
all the 'defaults'
Obviously it could with some products reformat the hard disk (g).

BUT, DrWeb itself via the menus allows changing to English and the
Spider on the bar needs a right click to change options.
Goto the local drweb ini file (its own directory) and zap the block
for MSDOS and the name of the loading Russian language file).
Result, its all in ENglish.

Adinf is more of a problem but If you first install the ALSO released
English version on the English page and then install the Russian
version (no idea if it makes any difference) the result is an
installed adinf in English.
If you just install it from the Russian page a required language file
is missing and while one no doubt could figure out what to install
easier is first to install the english version so the program
considers it an upgrade

notice that the guy who wrote it must be Dutch. Plus that its written

I wouldnt mind having a go through some Ducth contacts to see if its

Holland is small enough that if you write a program and it ends up on

Ok, its one of the reasons with heavy gaming you need a LOT of ram.
However onboard video cam be demonstrated easily: just use a
smallvideo camera.
Same board/same ram etc but with onboard deactivated can be set to
larger video 'boxes on the screen' before it isnt able to refresh the
whole picture and trying to play mpeg with onboard video is also a
good way to see that a real video card is better..

But will your old boards make proper use of the UDMA?
Donot forget that SCSI also takes a lot of work away from the
processor.
I have an old 486 with scsi running a cdrom burner
You can play mpegs on a 2 speed scsi cdrom. I had 2 old plextors
nobody wanted in a shop and I stuck them in a machine with a
spare scsi card, and it plays the movies/games etc.
That 'old ' scsi stuff is way better in many ways then the ide's everybody
buys. One of the reasons I recently send an old scsi card to a friend
in the USA as it was one of those old cards (you remember the 3
slots). That whole office had a scsi card, cd rom and hard disk in all
machines and they ran as stable as you might want.

Syafril> Question : Mail Client is Compute Bound or I/O bound from your point
Syafril> of view ?
Modem bound I would say, processor bound with the wrong modem (like
win-modem)
Or with a lot of data on old boards port bound (I used an ESP card for
my modem, and I still have it but no drivers for 98. It will handle
800k/sec...)
In general with older boards you may be better off with internal
modems as they have the higher speed ports included.

Syafril> How come ? So, what do you think/view about mailbox corrupt ?
Can have many reasons, maybe not enough ram, badly running windows.
The more things are split up the more chances on problems.
Sofar they never corrupted in my machine.

I havent seen any description of system involved but believe me, I
crashed while boxes are open BUT I always run the scan disk/equivalent
after to boot to sort the obvious mess out and fix it by deleting
whatever is conflicting.

Not the ONLY reason, they also compete on price and if its cheaper
with a bit less ram most consumers go for the cheapest.
Same with having that silly onboard video using system ram.
As computers where I live die quick anyway we tend to let people bring
their box in and we show them what it does by adding ram. Free of
charge... Almost nobody wants us to remove it again...
Take a nice old 486 and add a lot of ram and see it fly...
My kids run a P75 with 64 mb and windows 95, runs as fast as many
p133's or faster.

Steve> Personally my work and home workstations both have 128Mb of RAM. Swap?
Steve> What's that? One is NT, one is 98. My Linux server has 64Mb in it and it
Steve> only touches swap every once and a while.
Mine run 256 and you need it for some things.
If you run heavy duty gaming or graphic work, start at 256 mb...
In my own case the main reason I had a lot of ram was internet, to
make use of the lousy and expensive capcity I had, I went for enough
ram to be able to run double/tripple ftps up and down, have a news
reader running and my mail and if required a mpeg movie for my son.
My modem was normally running flat out as I just kept adding tasks
till it was optimum. I cannot do that anymore as my current isp is
cutting us off very often so I would use the lot but before that it
sure worked.

Steve> Want to know a secret?

Steve> "standard"? ;)
Mainly price as it was very difficult to sell extra ram at prices it
was a few years ago. Enough ram could double the pc price.
MY machine had a lot more ram since years, it runs so much
better/faster.
98 needs about 64 MINIMUM to run and from what I heard about windows
2000 it needs at least 256. Also in my experience, the faster the machine
the more ram you need to get rid of that hard disk bottle neck Steve
mentoned.

I had a small scsi drive (one of those fast ones) just for swapping...

Steve> Try 128Mb and no swapping. I have crashed from other areas, but that is
Steve> most likely from my sound card being an original AWE-32 with two 256kb SIMMs
Steve> that I bought new just for that card. ;)

you couldnt get the proper ram?? (g)

I just spend most of the day trying to figure out why my celeron 300A
running at 450 was running slower and slower..
Lucky the hardware cooperated and the half dead ram chip died.
believe me, my 98 was a snail with just 32 mb instead of its 256 mb.
I just hope that was all as I donot want to buy new ram, too
expensive!
Anyway as Steve says, you want more speed, add ram, its the cheapest
way to upgrade in many ways, depending obviously on the age of the
system... I wouldnt go off and buy simms!!
