When Mike lived in Odessa he helped me and a few others get trained to
do vertical rope work. I remember his trips into Wizards Well, it was
full on go and we never rested but once in 28 hours . He was always a
good friend to me and many others, I have some great memories...

2021-11-22 Thread Mark Minton
Thanks, Bill. I remember Mike from the ‘70s and/or ‘80s in Texas. I made a
couple of trips with him to Wizard’s Well. He was pretty hardcore back in the
day. He had a heavy hand sledge that he called Thor. I still use something
similar. I also remember an amusing incident from when he found a resurgence
cave in Mexico and wanted to name it something or other spring cave in Spanish,
but used the word for a mechanical spring instead of a fount of water.

I hope he recovers.

June and I visited with old friend Jimmy Walker yesterday for four hours at
his home in Waelder, Texas. We had the additional pleasure of visiting with his
son, Alan and wife Trish, delightful people. At 89, Jimmy is doing well and is
as sharp and personable as ever. Jimmy and I formed a close relationship in the
mid 1950's which has endured to the present. Of several caving trips our most
memorable was the excitement and distinction of being the second group to cross
the "Ledge" in Mayfield Cave (Caverns of Sonora) and explore perhaps the most
beautiful cave in America. This was February of 1956 when I was 21. We also
have some great pictures of our 1959 trip to KICKAPOO Cave on the former ranch
of Tommy Sargent, a neighbor of Happy Shahan, builder of Alamo Village. As some
of you may know, Jimmy is a writer, adventurer, caver, photographer and
probably the most talented artist of his time. I am in the process of acquiring
some of his works. Jimmy and I individually caved (spelunked) with Preston
McMichael during his regretfully short life. My friends and I were greatly
entertained on various camp outs by Preston playing classical guitar which he
did quite well. Jimmy and I have numerous pictures of Preston which were taken
on various outings. Some are at The Devil's Sinkhole, Goodenough Spring, a
rancher's bunkhouse where we were caving and at the shelter caves on the Rio
Grande with the historic Indian rock art. These were great times with two
unique individuals. I should gather all of my caving pictures to donate to the
TSS archives while I am still able.

[Texascavers] Texas Caver

2016-10-26 Thread Mixon Bill via Texascavers
I certainly agree that getting material is likely to be a greater challenge to
a TC editor than the mechanics of putting together an issue, especially if the
mechanics are perhaps reduced by a little less flash. But putting out a
quality, timely product that authors will be proud to appear in will help a
lot. -- Mixon

2016-10-16 Thread Bennett Lee via Texascavers
I have written more articles for the Texas Caver in the past 5 years than any
other person. More importantly, I have also offered to assist in proofreading
dozens of times over the years to numerous people, but no one has gotten me
involved in proofing the final version for many years now. And now we have an
issue that has MULTIPLE ERRORS ON THE COVER. If anyone thinks Jerry is being
“hateful” because he is resting on his legacy rather than offering his proofing
capabilities, then let me say as someone who has offered—and continues to
offer—to proofread, multiple blatant errors on the cover is completely
unacceptable.

And for the record, I was the editor of the LAG News for the Lubbock Area
Grotto back in the early 90s. I have a minor in Technical Writing, and a B.S.
in Computer Science. I have too many other large, time-consuming projects for
the Bexar Grotto and TCMA to be the actual editor, but I would be a huge
benefit to the Texas Caver even in a limited proofreading role.

If you want to shut me up about blatant errors, then let me help proof. I
can’t guarantee I’ll catch every error, but at least then I’ll be one the
people blamed instead of one of the people complaining.

Sorry you find it hateful to call a spade a spade. Perhaps when you were an
officer of the TSA, you could have helped correct the situation rather than
send nasty emails to those that are disgusted with the lackluster results of a
TSA that apologizes rather than acts when there is a serious problem.
And as a lesson to history, I have put in my time as an officer of the TSA,
edited the TxCvr, and published the Activities Newsletter when another past
editor did not perform. I've attended TSA meetings for over 40 years and been
involved in and led TSA projects. Don't even try to give me a lesson on how
things work and the sacrifices involved with making both the TSA and TxCvr
work.
You, at least in the past as an officer, were responsible for not just putting
on a Convention, attending meetings, and doing the miscellaneous jobs required
by the office, but also carrying on a legacy established by others before you.
The thousands of days and hours of work by others over 50 some years to create
an organization that brought the various caving groups together, made them want
to contribute to the greater good, and create one of the best caving
publications in the country, is that legacy. That legacy has been increasingly
squandered in the recent past to the point that folks ask me what difference
the TSA makes nowadays. I try to defend the TSA but the inability to get a
TxCvr out for a year, the lack of transparency in informing the membership of
the situation, and the type of response I have received from you for voicing
disgust at a well meant but poorly edited TxCvr after so long a hiatus, make it
difficult.
And if you think folks don't notice those glaring errors on the front cover,
you must really have a low opinion of their expectations. Maybe that's part of
our problem. Just getting by is apparently the norm, one must give credit and
applause even for a poor job, and the lack of pride that folks seem to want to
put into their work.
This may sound like nasty, hateful, talk and make you want to run away and
hide, but it's time for the TSA to stand up and be counted. Those that came
before you carried the water for many years. Now it's your turn and we're
watching.

I am in awe.

Just a quick perusal of the cover says it all. I'll be waiting for Marvin to
return from his time machine trip to 2105. And for grins, I did find that
"Haule" is a village consisting of about 610 inhabitants in the municipality of
Ooststellingwerf in the east of Friesland in the Netherlands

I was astounded to find that I have been spelling "flow stone" incorrectly all
these years. And who authored the "Forged in Fire" photo montage of some
unknown cave(s) somewhere in Hawaii at some unknown date. At least there were
photo captions identifying the people, if not the cave, unlike most of the
other articles.

I did enjoy the articles, and I appreciate the effort that the authors put
forward for the enjoyment of us all. I hope you continue to submit articles in
the future despite this issue.

Really, folks, I understand that you all wanted to get this issue out before

TSA Members,

The long awaited Texas Caver Magazine is printed and also available online in
the members area http://www.cavetexas.org/members/index.php. I am bringing the
printed magazines to TCR tonight and will have them at the Friday Wine Tasting
and from then on I will probably leave them at registration. The magazines will
finally be available at the TSA members meeting on Sunday, October 16th at 9am.
I will mail any magazines that remain after TCR.

Thanks to Jill for all your hard work on the magazine. Thanks to Linda Palit
and Niki Lake for helping get the magazine ready from the printer.

Hope to see you at TCR!

[Texascavers] Texas Caver Magazine & TSA Fall Business Meeting

2016-10-05 Thread Robert B via Texascavers
TSA Members and concerned Texas Cavers

Many of you have voiced your concern regarding the absence of the Texas
Caver magazine over the past year. For the most part I have tried to listen
to your individual concerns and explain the situation on a 'one to one'
basis either through emails or phone calls. I have been personally
reluctant to utilize the 'Texascavers' listserve or Facebook as a means to
communicate to our caving community about the magazine. As current TSA
Chairman I can longer keep our members and our caving community in the
dark. Hence this note

Our current Editor has produced a number of great Texas Cavers issues over
the last few years. And I am greatful for her efforts. The content and
layout had been professionally edited. However, I (acting as TSA Chairman)
recognized too late that the editor did not have the support needed. This
job requires many people to lend a helping hand. Yes, there were a number
of very helpful proofreaders. But that's not enough to produce our
magazine. This task cannot fall to just one person. As such...

I have been actively searching for a new 'Editor in Chief' and a strong
group of Co-Editors for the Texas Caver Magazine. This team is finally
coming together and our goal is to produce quarterly issues ASAP. We have
the articles and the photos, its just a matter of completing some final
editing/layout tasks and getting it to a printer.

I ask for your patience, indulgence and yes, your help as we transition to
a new team of Editors.

Regarding the TSA Fall Business Meeting
Date & Time = Sunday October 16 - 9:00AM

I hope to see you all at TCR..

Jill,I'd like to write an article about  Big Bend Ranch State Park.  We just
got an MOU between TSS and the parks to do a cave survey project.  I'll make
that announcement, advertise for the trip during thanksgiving, and give a brief
summary of our previous efforts at the park.  When do you need the article by?
Shouldn't take long.

Jill,

I'd like to write an article about Big Bend Ranch State Park. We just got an
MOU between TSS and the parks to do a cave survey project. I'll make that
announcement, advertise for the trip during thanksgiving, and give a brief
summary of our previous efforts at the park. When do you need the article by?
Shouldn't take long.

Thanks, Jill. The PDF version of issue 2 works well, but the ePub
version is a repeat of issue 1. I tried changing the 01 to a 02 in the
URL link, but that didn't work either (404 error - Not Found).

Hi Everyone,

The TC is in urgent and desperate need of articles for the next issue.

All of the regular contributors are too busy for this issue - so if you've
been thinking of submitting an article, never written an article, or have a
project to update us on - now is the time to do it!!

Thanks in advance!

It is also extremely important that this information be included as the Texas

back on the Contents Page to make it complete, and to correct an error that
is being perpetuated. In the past this information has been either there or
on the combined Publication Data/Contents Page. There is plenty of room to
add a text box above the word Contents with this information, or if it
belongs on the Publication Data page, put it there. I would suggest checking
with Logan McNatt as to correct placement.

 The Texas Caver
 January - March, 2015
 Volume 61, Issue 1

I put this in the format that would be for the first issue of 2015. In many
past issues, also, rather than Vol and Issue being put on the cover, it was
 simply the months involved.

Correction that needs to be fixed: The Volume number is for a whole year!
DO NOT increase this number with the isssue number increasement! Please see
the wonderful spread sheet provided by Jerry Atkinson in his 11/13/14 post
about the Texas Caver Publication List. If you have never worked on a
magazine before, and have never paid attention to this, then this mistake can
be understandable. But if we are still sending out issues to libraries and
other important cave owner entities, this information matters. For all who
may still get their hard copies bound into yearly volumes, this also matters.
In 2014, the TC went from Vol 60 all the way to Vol 63, yet the whole year
 is Volume 60.

To many who see this post, this request will seem frivolous and totally
unimportant. But as someone who worked on the TC for untold years alongside
James Jasek to edit, type, proofread, correct, print, collate, address and
mail for any number of editors, besides working in a bookbinding company,
this information really matters. Design is completely individual as to the
editor of any magazine, but critical publication data is not, and is one of
those things - like proper page numbers for the articles within - that should
be carried forward from issue to issue for proper continuity.

Sincerely, and with the best of nerdy, proofreading intentions,

[Texascavers] Texas Caver on Portal fixed

2014-11-21 Thread George Veni via Texascavers
Last week there were messages about some problems with the Texas Cavers on the
Karst Information Portal. The problems have been fixed and the missing issue is
no longer missing. My thanks to Mark Alman, Mark Minton, and Bill Mixon for
their assistance.

As I've noted before, if any of you find problems with the Portal or have
better quality versions of the material that is posted (especially hard copies
that can be sent to the Portal team for scanning), please let me know. This is
for any material, not just The Texas Caver. Of course if you have newsletters
and other materials that are not yet on the Portal, it would be great to see
them posted so just let me know and I'll work with you to make it possible.
Don't underestimate the long-term value of the trip reports, maps, and notes in
your newsletters!

George

Subject: [Texascavers] Honey Creek Cave lead list

I just looked through the digital version of the latest Texas Caver. My lead
list for Honey Creek Cave fills the last few pages. However, I noticed a
mistake. A note was added to contact me with any new information but it lists
my old e-mail address (which hasn’t worked since I moved from San Antonio
nearly 8 years ago) and a 505 area code for my home phone in Carlsbad (which
a few years ago changed to 575 for the southern half of New Mexico).

In short, if you have any updates for the lead list or any questions about
the specific leads, let me know. My correct e-mail address and other contact
information are below. Notice that my mobile number is still a San Antonio
 area code.

I added a link to a reader but when you download the volume, you have to save
as: and add epub as the extension. I.E. wants to download it as a zip file.
It may take a little while to work out this technical advancement. The PDF
version will work on most any PC, Phone, MAC or?

Re: [Texascavers] Texas Caver

2014-07-31 Thread via Texascavers
I agree with you, Marvin.

On occasion, when the picking were slim for the TC, I had to resort to the same
thing in order to get it published.

No harm in that.

Not everyone has access to these listserves (is that a word?) and, since
attachments aren’t allowed, I would ping the writers for photos to go along
with their offerings to further flesh out their report.

“Put a little meat on their bones”, in other words.

One’s gotta do what one’s gotta do when the pickings are a little slim.

A report is a report.

My main query yesterday was not just how the TC was doing, but how is the TSA
doing, as in membership numbers and trends.

Organized clubs are struggling, including many grottos and the NSS. How does
the TSA look?

For the record - and I'm not mad at anyone; I think this is a good discussion -
the Texas caving news appearing in the latest issue of the NSS News is in
Buford Pruitt's Underground Online column. Buford's method - as I understand
it - is trolling the chatter on various blogs, email lists, etc. across the
nation and compiling the interesting bits in his column. That is how a Colorado
Bend trip report, a Government Canyon trip report, and a report on the latest
Deep Cave trip ended up in the NSS News. They were not sent to the News as an
article to be published but were instead picked up by Buford off of this very
email listserve. That's great. Cavers across the nation and the world need to
see that Texas cavers go caving and do interesting things.

I know that occasionally the three people who wrote those reports for

For the record - and I'm not mad at anyone; I think this is a good
discussion - the Texas caving news appearing in the latest issue of
the NSS News is in Buford Pruitt's Underground Online column.
Buford's method - as I understand it - is trolling the chatter on
various blogs, email lists, etc. across the nation and compiling the
interesting bits in his column. That is how a Colorado Bend trip
report, a Government Canyon trip report, and a report on the latest
Deep Cave trip ended up in the NSS News. They were not sent to the
News as an article to be published but were instead picked up by
Buford off of this very email listserve. That's great. Cavers across

[Texascavers] Texas Caver

2014-07-30 Thread Heather Tucek via Texascavers
As per request from a caver unnamed, I'm posting this here too. You know,
just in case I haven't already royally pissed you off yet. But you know
what? Worth it.

The Texas Caver has just been sent off to the printer. This is the May
issue of the Texas Caver. Why is it almost August and the May issue is only
finally being printed? Why, it's because no Texas Cavers actually send in
trip reports to be published! We can't make a newsletter/magazine if
there's nothing to put in it.

I know LOTS of you have gone on a number of Texas caving trips in the past
couple of months. I know LOTS of you went on plenty of AMAZING TAG trips
this month. Why is no one sending in articles? Jill spends an exorbitant
amount of her personal volunteer time making the layout, editing, adding
photos, etc. All the things needed to make the Texas Caver a great
publication. We won one award at the Publication Salon at the NSS
Convention. ONE. How many did other organizations win? You know why?
Because they actually have stuff to publish

There's an article about Texas Caving in the most recent NSS News. Why? Why
isn't that article in the Texas Caver? Just because it goes in the national
magazine doesn't mean it can't also go in the local magazine. If you're
going to put one together for NSS, go ahead and copy Jill on your email!
(I've seen this a number of times, not just this month).

Bottom line is, if you want to see your Texas Caver magazine in the mail
anymore, you need to man up, be a part of the answer instead of the
problem, and start sending in your trip reports and photos. If you don't
want to publish something because you think you can't write, have someone
copyedit it for you first. I'll be happy to go through and fix spelling and
grammatical errors, as long as you SEND SOMETHING IN!!

TL;DR
Start sending articles and photos to the Texas Caver or I will camp on your
front doorstep until you write something down. I know who you are.

/end rant

No, No, Nooo! Save them for the Caver, Mr. Loving, sir, please

Here's an idea--
I saw multiple people do interesting things at NSS Convention and maybe no one
wants to write a real trip report but multiple brief vignettes by several
attendees, collected into a glimpses of Convention article could be pretty
entertaining. I'd write up my favorite fooled me moment.

Any takers?

[Texascavers] Texas Caver Announcement

2014-06-20 Thread Jill Orr
Hi Texas Cavers,

Aside from the other great people who've volunteered to help solicit
articles, Mallory Mayeaux has agreed to be Associate Editor for the Texas
Caver Magazine, and make direct contact for articles on all the great trips
going on. Since for the next few months I can only make general requests,
which have been quite ineffective, I really need the support.

The upcoming issue, which is completed and currently being edited, is
greatly reduced for lack of articles and photos. I really hope to catch up
and have a full sized issue in a reasonable time frame. Many thanks to all
new and regular contributors and apologies to subscribers for the late and
shrunken issue.

The December Texas Caver was sheepishly mailed this week. The printer even
called to ask if there was a typo
on the date. :- /. Good printer, that. Very embarrassed. Have heard of other
persons being such a procrastinator but I was never one like this before. Sorry
y'all. Butch has been sent copy for website - watch for your electronic
versions.

Please send articles ASAP for next issue so I can catch up...! Thanks for your
understanding and patience.

Ok, Texas cavers, I know y'all have been going underground and going to a
convention since the last issue, so let's help Jill out. Preserve and project
managers, send in a status-trip-project report with pictures if you haven't
done so in a while. Grottos, if you've been on a great trip, tell us about it!

Being topside during the convention, we missed all the presentations. Send
something in - I would love to see an article with pics on that Honey Creek
trip! What about the TCMA Auction? Results - pics - something? For those who
couldn't be there or missed parts, fill us in!

I absolutely know there have to be some caver
poets/balladeers/storytellers/artists-cartoonists out there! Put that material
out there for us to enjoy! Don't be shy:)

The Texas Caver is our magazine, but it needs content to become something we
all can enjoy. Start typing or keyboarding or whatever you call it these days -
fb and e-mail will be there when you are done. I promise:)

Needing something to proofread!

So sorry TSA members for such a long delay in getting the print publication
out.

Many things kept me behind, but ..
The good news is the new issue came from the printer yesterday

The bad news is that they did not label them

The good news is that they will reprint them with labels for free

More good news is that I'll be in Austin and can deliver to many TSA members
at the TCC

Even more good news is that we can save some postage

The Best good news is we get to keep the 100 that they printed without
labels

Thanks for your patience.

By the way, I'm looking for photos for next issues cover and of course
articles.

As one of the proof reading staff, I apologize now for any mistakes left in
this issue. For some reason, my proof issue e-mail did not come in till last
night, and I am working to get my part done before the issue goes to print.
Since I sent no corrections in, Jill would have assumed all was well.
Technology is great when no glitches arise.

Again, my apologies to all, including all staff of the TC. I take my proof
reading very seriously, as those who know my past work can attest to.

Sincerely,
Mimi Jasek
