When Mike lived in Odessa he helped me and a few others get trained to do vertical rope work. I remember his trips into Wizards Well, it was full on go and we never rested but once in 28 hours . He was always a good friend to me and many others, I have some great memories... On 11/22/2021 10:25 PM, Mimi Jasek wrote: So sorry to hear this ☹️ My Jim went caving with Mike on numerous occasions. Re: [Texascavers] Texas caver Mike Wharton
Thanks, Bill. I remember Mike from the ‘70s and/or ‘80s in Texas. I made a couple of trips with him to Wizard’s Well. He was pretty hardcore back in the day. He had a heavy hand sledge that he called Thor. I still use something similar. I also remember an amusing incident from when he found a resurgence cave in Mexico and wanted to name it something or other spring cave in Spanish, but used the word for a mechanical spring instead of a fount of water. I hope he recovers. I certainly agree that getting material is likely to be a greater challenge to a TC editor than the mechanics of putting together an issue, especially if the mechanics are perhaps reduced by a little less flash. But putting out a quality, timely product that authors will be proud to appear in will help a lot. -- Mixon A chicken is the egg's way of making another egg. Re: [Texascavers] Texas Caver Magazine Ready (for what...?)
I have written more articles for the Texas Caver in the past 5 years than any other person. More importantly, I have also offered to assist in proofreading dozens of times over the years to numerous people, but no one has gotten me involved in proofing the final version for many years now. And now we have an issue that has MULTIPLE ERRORS ON THE COVER. If anyone thinks Jerry is being “hateful” because he is resting on his legacy rather than offering his proofing capabilities, then let me say as someone who has offered—and continues to offer—to proofread, multiple blatant errors on the cover is completely unacceptable. And for the record, I was the editor of the LAG News for the Lubbock Area Grotto back in the early 90s. I have a minor in Technical Writing, and a B.S. in Computer Science. I have too many other large, time-consuming projects for the Bexar Grotto and TCMA to be the actual editor, but I would be a huge benefit to the Texas Caver even in a limited proofreading role. If you want to shut me up about blatant errors, then let me help proof. I can’t guarantee I’ll catch every error, but at least then I’ll be one the people blamed instead of one of the people complaining. --Bennett From: Texascavers [mailto:texascavers-boun...@texascavers.com] On Behalf Of Fritz Holt via Texascavers Sent: Sunday, October 16, 2016 4:24 PM To: texascavers@texascavers.com Subject: Re: [Texascavers] Texas Caver Magazine Ready (for what...?) Jerry, To channel old 'copperknob', insulting Heather means you have no heart, insulting me means you have no brain. But I am very sober this morning, and you are still very ugly inside. Stop insulting people, you are not helping yourself or TSA by doing so. If you don't like the caver, volunteer to help the editor or take over it's duties in the future. Wow Jerry. [Texascavers] Texas Caver Magazine & TSA Fall Business Meeting
TSA Members and concerned Texas Cavers Many of you have voiced your concern regarding the absence of the Texas Caver magazine over the past year. For the most part I have tried to listen to your individual concerns and explain the situation on a 'one to one' basis either through emails or phone calls. I have been personally reluctant to utilize the 'Texascavers' listserve or Facebook as a means to communicate to our caving community about the magazine. As current TSA Chairman I can longer keep our members and our caving community in the dark. Hence this note Our current Editor has produced a number of great Texas Cavers issues over the last few years. And I am greatful for her efforts. The content and layout had been professionally edited. However, I (acting as TSA Chairman) recognized too late that the editor did not have the support needed. This job requires many people to lend a helping hand. Yes, there were a number of very helpful proofreaders. But that's not enough to produce our magazine. This task cannot fall to just one person. As such... I have been actively searching for a new 'Editor in Chief' and a strong group of Co-Editors for the Texas Caver Magazine. This team is finally coming together and our goal is to produce quarterly issues ASAP. We have the articles and the photos, its just a matter of completing some final editing/layout tasks and getting it to a printer. I ask for your patience, indulgence and yes, your help as we transition to a new team of Editors. Regarding the TSA Fall Business Meeting Date & Time = Sunday October 16 - 9:00AM I hope to see you all at TCR.. Amen, sister! Jim Mobile email from my iPhone On Feb 1, 2015, at 6:12 PM, Jerry via Texascavers texascavers@texascavers.com wrote: Posted for Mimi Jasek: To All Current and Future Editors and Proofreaders of the Texas Caver: We really do have one of the finest caving magazines in the United States, but I would like to try to make you aware of something that needs to be put back on the Contents Page to make it complete, and to correct an error that is being perpetuated. In the past this information has been either there or on the combined Publication Data/Contents Page. There is plenty of room to add a text box above the word Contents with this information, or if it belongs on the Publication Data page, put it there. I would suggest checking with Logan McNatt as to correct placement. The Texas Caver January - March, 2015 Volume 61, Issue 1 I put this in the format that would be for the first issue of 2015. In many past issues, also, rather than Vol and Issue being put on the cover, it was simply the months involved. Correction that needs to be fixed: The Volume number is for a whole year! DO NOT increase this number with the isssue number increasement! Please see the wonderful spread sheet provided by Jerry Atkinson in his 11/13/14 post about the Texas Caver Publication List. If you have never worked on a magazine before, and have never paid attention to this, then this mistake can be understandable. But if we are still sending out issues to libraries and other important cave owner entities, this information matters. For all who may still get their hard copies bound into yearly volumes, this also matters. In 2014, the TC went from Vol 60 all the way to Vol 63, yet the whole year is Volume 60. To many who see this post, this request will seem frivolous and totally unimportant. [Texascavers] Texas Caver on Portal fixed
Last week there were messages about some problems with the Texas Cavers on the Karst Information Portal. The problems have been fixed and the missing issue is no longer missing. My thanks to Mark Alman, Mark Minton, and Bill Mixon for their assistance. As I've noted before, if any of you find problems with the Portal or have better quality versions of the material that is posted (especially hard copies that can be sent to the Portal team for scanning), please let me know. This is for any material, not just The Texas Caver. Of course if you have newsletters and other materials that are not yet on the Portal, it would be great to see them posted so just let me know and I'll work with you to make it possible. Don't underestimate the long-term value of the trip reports, maps, and notes in your newsletters! Re: [Texascavers] Texas Caver
I agree with you, Marvin. On occasion, when the picking were slim for the TC, I had to resort to the same thing in order to get it published. No harm in that. Not everyone has access to these listserves (is that a word?) and, since attachments aren’t allowed, I would ping the writers for photos to go along with their offerings to further flesh out their report. “Put a little meat on their bones”, in other words. One’s gotta do what one’s gotta do when the pickings are a little slim. A report is a report. [Texascavers] Texas Caver
As per request from a caver unnamed, I'm posting this here too. You know, just in case I haven't already royally pissed you off yet. But you know what? Worth it. The Texas Caver has just been sent off to the printer. This is the May issue of the Texas Caver. Why is it almost August and the May issue is only finally being printed? Why, it's because no Texas Cavers actually send in trip reports to be published! We can't make a newsletter/magazine if there's nothing to put in it. I know LOTS of you have gone on a number of Texas caving trips in the past couple of months. I know LOTS of you went on plenty of AMAZING TAG trips this month. Why is no one sending in articles? Jill spends an exorbitant amount of her personal volunteer time making the layout, editing, adding photos, etc. All the things needed to make the Texas Caver a great publication. We won one award at the Publication Salon at the NSS Convention. ONE. How many did other organizations win? You know why? Because they actually have stuff to publish There's an article about Texas Caving in the most recent NSS News. Why? Why isn't that article in the Texas Caver? Just because it goes in the national magazine doesn't mean it can't also go in the local magazine. If you're going to put one together for NSS, go ahead and copy Jill on your email! (I've seen this a number of times, not just this month). Bottom line is, if you want to see your Texas Caver magazine in the mail anymore, you need to man up, be a part of the answer instead of the problem, and start sending in your trip reports and photos. If you don't want to publish something because you think you can't write, have someone copyedit it for you first. I'll be happy to go through and fix spelling and grammatical errors, as long as you SEND SOMETHING IN!! TL;DR Start sending articles and photos to the Texas Caver or I will camp on your front doorstep until you write something down. [Texascavers] Texas Caver Announcement
Hi Texas Cavers, Aside from the other great people who've volunteered to help solicit articles, Mallory Mayeaux has agreed to be Associate Editor for the Texas Caver Magazine, and make direct contact for articles on all the great trips going on. Since for the next few months I can only make general requests, which have been quite ineffective, I really need the support. The upcoming issue, which is completed and currently being edited, is greatly reduced for lack of articles and photos. I really hope to catch up and have a full sized issue in a reasonable time frame. Many thanks to all new and regular contributors and apologies to subscribers for the late and shrunken issue. Re: [Texascavers] Texas Caver articles
Ok, Texas cavers, I know y'all have been going underground and going to a convention since the last issue, so let's help Jill out. Preserve and project managers, send in a status-trip-project report with pictures if you haven't done so in a while. Grottos, if you've been on a great trip, tell us about it! Being topside during the convention, we missed all the presentations. Send something in - I would love to see an article with pics on that Honey Creek trip! What about the TCMA Auction? Results - pics - something? For those who couldn't be there or missed parts, fill us in! I absolutely know there have to be some caver poets/balladeers/storytellers/artists-cartoonists out there! Put that material out there for us to enjoy! Don't be shy:) The Texas Caver is our magazine, but it needs content to become something we all can enjoy. Start typing or keyboarding or whatever you call it these days - fb and e-mail will be there when you are done. I promise:) Needing something to proofread! So sorry TSA members for such a long delay in getting the print publication out. Many things kept me behind, but .. The good news is the new issue came from the printer yesterday The bad news is that they did not label them The good news is that they will reprint them with labels for free More good news is that I'll be in Austin and can deliver to many TSA members at the TCC Even more good news is that we can save some postage The Best good news is we get to keep the 100 that they printed without labels Thanks for your patience. By the way, I'm looking for photos for next issues cover and of course articles. Jill

As one of the proof reading staff, I apologize now for any mistakes left in this issue. For some reason, my proof issue e-mail did not come in till last night, and I am working to get my part done before the issue goes to print. Since I sent no corrections in, Jill would have assumed all was well. Technology is great when no glitches arise. Again, my apologies to all, including all staff of the TC. I take my proof reading very seriously, as those who know my past work can attest to. Very, very nice job on this issue of the TC, Jill! Enjoyed it immensely and Linda's interview with Pete Strickland was highly entertaining! For those of you who aren't TSA members, Jill's superb work on the TEXAS CAVER is reason enough to join! Keep up the great work!
