I did not have time to read the article but I take the most basic scientific
approach.Earthquakes do not kill people
but falling objects do.There are some similarities between the Haitian
situation and some Californians: they both build homes in vulnerable areas
and they both have been warned that the "big" one was coming.

2010-01-02 Thread michael sylvester
Mike P: I agree, but keep in mind that even though there might be solid data
to justify recommendations, there are other factors that may contribute to
publc resistance. For example the recommendation thae women could wait till
5o for mammograms was based on good data. And going way back, wasn't there a
study that purported that child sexual abuse did not have any significant
devastating effect on the adult?Congress was not buying it.

Apparently there is a belief in Scotland that the first person one meets as the

[tips] Tiger Woods/Scandinavian wife

2009-12-30 Thread michael sylvester
Tiger Wood's extramarital affairs should be viewed as a "guy" thing. If he was
married to an American born woman, that American woman would probably be taking
him for a ride for his money, and appear before the media like Sanford's wife
did in Carolina. As the cross-cultural dude on Tips, there is a history in
Scandinavia of tolerance
for "messing around" with understanding.I know of many married Scandinavian
men who have girl friends in Chile and have travelled there to visit them. The
American press was trying to make a big deal out of this, but the American media
did not seek the opinion of Tiger's Scandinavian wife. She probably thoight that
this was none of the press' business.
Other important aspects of this is that interracial marriages tend to last
longer of blacks married to Europeans despite issues in the marriage. The
Scandinavians also have a highrate of adoption of black babies, and despite the
high divorce rate in Scandinavia, the families work hard to keep relationships
intact.
Please note that Sammy Davis Jr. was married to the Swede Mae Britt. Btw,the
high divorce rate in Scandinavia is not because the family is in disarray but
it can be viewed from the perspective that people who feel liberated to engage
in relationships are also free to disengage in relationships if they want to.

2009-12-29 Thread michael sylvester
Just perusing through the posts,it seems that some tipsters are implying that
statistical non-significance should be of no major social and civic import. As
the cross-cultural dude on Tips,it appears that the U.S and other Wesdtern
countries abide by the principle that one casualty is too many. Now this might
not be statistically significant but there is this kind of thinking that
persists. It seens that the real importance of low or possible casualty is the
impact it radiates in various aspects of public life from economic impact to
just the plain need for safety. There is an element of
"vicariousness" in U.S culture that creates "vague apprehensions" of disaster
experienced by many.To me this is what needs to be measured for statistical
significance.

2009-12-28 Thread michael sylvester
Are there some do's and don'ts while on sabbatical? Maybe Bill or anyone else
contemplating a sabbatical can heed some advice from our cohesive Tipsville
community.I heard about the prof who landed in the wrong country on a trip.
He apparently intended to go to the Dominican Republic but told the ticket
agent Dominica.Dominica is an island between Martinique and Guadeloupe in
the Southern Caribbean. The Dominican Republic is closer to Cuba and Puerto
Rico.Realizing that he arrived at an English speaking island,he had a lesson
in geography.
So one rule is to know where one is headed geographically. How would you spend
it now,if you already had one?

[tips] Martin Bolt

2009-12-27 Thread michael sylvester
I know of Martin Bolt. His instructional exercises came in a blue box with
learning objectives for each chapter, and suggested readings. This came about the
same time there was a text from another author which consisted of modules. The
Bolt blue box also contained scales of personality such as determining locus of
control.
I was teaching at predominantly black institutions at that time and I did not
find any social psychology text at that time that went into depth of addressing
the Afrocentric perspective.A text by Katz "Towards the elimiation of prejudice"
was good. Most social -psyh topics appear to be more relevant to highly
sophisticated cultural societies.I am not certain if Gordon Allport's
constructs re prejudice would be relevant today.

[tips] Martin Bolt

2009-12-26 Thread michael sylvester
Martin Bolt is a good example of the Eurocentric consensus in psychology and
so are the other social psychologists
like Pedigree and Aronson. The group processes idea of social psychology and its
underpinnings are a reflection of a paradigm that failed to take into account
the unique African-American perspective.
His works are interesting reading but one should be cognizant of the
historical context.

Re: [tips] Who put the "Little" in "Little Albert"?

Stephen: I have a few speculations to consider. Was Albert from the South?
Did the people involved in the study from
execution to write up Southerners or had a Southern bent? Could Albert's
parents refer to him as 'Li'l Albert

which was later changed to "Little"?
There is a video of American tongues about the different ways of speaking in
America and you will be surprised as how expressions vary from region to
region. It could be that the "little" could reflect the cuteness of that age
and was fixated upon by the editor.Just my take. Please do not address me as

[tips] American students/Strategic acculturation

2009-12-22 Thread michael sylvester
It should be crystal clear that despite the assumption that students get
educated to be well informed, amd to think critically, the reality is that a
great majority of students see education as a gateway to get a good paying
job.It is also interesting that employers may not care about grades as long as
one graduated from college.Grade inflation
probably serves an adaptive function for both faculty and students.
It helps retention, and signifies that we have at least an educated citizenry
despite differences in cognitive pursuits. And based on the assumption that
students nowadays do not care to pursue the breath
and depth of ideas, the fact is that many students just want to get the diploma
so they can get a good paying job. Some students may not be interested in
working hard to get good grades. They probably are thinking of effortless
strategies to get good grades. And that could be
as American as apple pie. I do not dig the assumption that American students
are lazy: they are just motivated for different and other pursuits.
I was a lecturer at an Aeronautical university here in Daytona Beach
and students always complained about having to take Humanities, and
Behavioral and Social Science courses. However they enjoyed this different
orientation since without passing those classes they would probably not become
pilots. However there are many flight schools where someone can learn aviation
skills without taking Humanities and Psychology

To me ,a big issue is to find out what students
are motivated towards and profs should adapt strategies
to students' needs.I suspect that our aging Tipsters are in a quandary with
historical pedagocial models that are not effective
with today's student.Grade inflation may be a coping mechanism
to ensure job security and academic morale. But profs should think of the long
term impact that grades will have on the students' future.
Paul Bernhardt had a post re an ex-student who was consulted about
radiology at her place of work.Since the student apparently did not get good
grades in class,he assumed that this
could be risky at the workplace.Personally I would be cautious with this
assumption. There is a difference between the world of work
and the classroom. And e should be aware of the FATE-The
Fundamental Academic Transfer Error. This is the idea that
classroom behavior is predictive of subsequent behavior in the real
world. Many college grads will tell you that their classroom studies were of
little significance to what they learn on the job.
Ed Pollack mentioned a relative teaching in China who found that the
elite kids misbehaved.Perhaps if the relative was non-American it could be a
different story. Also students in Asia study hard for exams so they can advance
further.Teaching English
in those countries may not be a big deal
My conclusion is that the American system is good as it.It is a microcosm of
all that is American: mass production, disgust for the
perceived tyranny of hard work, tacky, and it is how effective obe can
manipilate the process.
However American students may be perceived as lazy, but they
  are certainly happier.

[tips] Was Freud a self-hating jew?

2009-12-18 Thread michael sylvester
I first became aware of the expression "self-hating" jew this past
summer.Apparently it is alleged that the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu has been using this expression to describe White House officials like
Rahm Emmanuel,David Axelrod and other jewish members of the Obama
administration. The expression has also been directed to Richard Goldstone-a U,N
official. Those officials have been highly critical of Israel's settlement
polices and the treatment of the Palestinians.Whereas the SHJ expression has
political import,I am curious if it goes beyond that to include jews who oppose
implicit and explicit judaic traditions and philosophy.
This SHJ designation would seem to parallel the "Uncle Tom" designation
directed at some blacks like Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas. I
wonder if Freud would fit into the SHJ designation.Freud wrote a piece titled
MOSES AND MONOTHEIS which was critical of the Jewish faith. It is alleged that
Freud was
irritated by his mother's frequent stops to adjust her nylon stockings. FReud's
defense mechanism of sublmation and his work CIVIZATION AND ITS DISCONTENT had
its roots in judaic cultural traditions.

[tips] Is Psychology "settled" science?

2009-12-17 Thread michael sylvester
The issue of whether some idea is settled or not usually pops up during the
hearings for a supreme court nominee re opinions about abortions. The nominee is
likely to concur that Roe versus Wade
is settled law.Contrary to the physical and biological sciences where
tenets are usually settled, psychology can be on shaky grounds if it tries to
established definitive rules and principles of behavior. There seems to be
constant paradigm shift and what we seem to have are differing interpratations
of behavioral events. For examples, issues like what is the "stimulus" or what
exactly is "learned" may be understood in psychspeak, but they are not
definitive as say in Physics or mechanics.
I can recall reading J.J Gibson "The senses considered as perceptual systems"
and differences were made between the "proximal" and "distal" stimulus. It is
still debatable what exactly takes place when
we "learn". The other sciences however seem to deal with straight
facts,Ironically, critical thinking skills which are hailed in Tipsville
may be an indication that psychology is not settled science.Real scientists
want to know what "is".

Re: [tips] Who put the BF in Skinner?

2009-12-16 Thread michael sylvester

I am told by my graduate advisor (F.K. McSweeney) that it is
something of a Harvard tradition to publish that way. Herrnstein
sometimes went as R.J. Herrnstein. Stevens went by S.S. Stevens,
etc. They are respectively called "Fran" Dick" and "Smitty" by
friends - but they published using initials. Of course, Skinner's
friends called him "Fred" so he does not break the pattern.

Of course there is JER Staddon and MEP Seligman if we want to go to 3
initials.

Tips threads are most interesting but I wonder at times if we are too focused

Sounds like the "historicism" error-applying ideas of the past without

What arrangements do you make for the special needs' students in your courses
re taking exams?.Most schools,I presume, have a Testing center where profs can

Testing Center personnel will administer the tests. Is this the method you
follow?
It is assumed that the student will have ample time to complete the exam at the
center than in the classroom.
Or maybe tipsters use varying methods to assess, such as verbal output instead

Would you really flunk a visually challenged or a student with Parkinsons'?

2009-10-28 Thread michael sylvester
Grades are based on performance on tests and other delineated specified
measures of the instructor. We measure performane in class and although some
will contend that performance indicates learningI would not bet on this all the
time. One can still learn even though the performance is measurable. We have
teachers' evaluations but we do not have "learning" evaluation because it will
be difficult to measure that.Ironically a student wfo might say that "I learnt
about that in psychology" does not nexcessarily imply that the student has
learned.I suspect that just being in the classroom and listening and
participating the student learns.Maybe constructing a Learning evaluation form
and asking students to fill it out
at the end of the course could be a beginning.

[tips] Cell phones/tumors/insanity defense

2009-10-27 Thread michael sylvester
The Brits are reporting the results of a ten year study involving multitudes
that support a correlation between cell phone usage and brain tumors. The study
was reported in the Telegraph according to CNN.
Now if the results are upheld,I am speculating that this could lead the way for
more people taking an insanity plea.It can be argued that brain tumors can
effect behavior.Of course, that wull depend on the location of the tumor. For
example a tumor in the area of the ventral hypothalamus may have different
behavioral results than one in the lateral hypothalamus.I can recall an episode
from the Brain series where a defendant was found not guilty by reason of
insanity. The defendant had very severe issues with domestic violence, but when
the tumor was removed, his abusive behaviors disappeared. The judge noted that
the insanity plea was meant for people who could not control their behavior
because of brain tumors.
This cell phone study could really
revolutionize social and personal dynamics and attribution theory. We may be
adding
a new force to Freud's unconscious-eros,thanatos and now cell phone
motivated behavior. Stay tuned.
I stand corrected.

Malcolm G,the author of Outliers, brought to my attention that despite all that

Hamburg,Germany,working 8 hours a day,7 days a week ,for almost two years.
So the idea that those guys just popped out of Liverpool taking the U.S by

practice and cantinuous practice is a key to creativity and success and to

Re: Re:[tips] categories of intelligence

2009-10-24 Thread michael sylvester

  I have a question

What's the difference between Sternberg's practical intelligence and the
construct of crystallized intelligence (Horn/Catell)?

Seems like Sternberg focuses on tacit knowledge but can't that be considered
a subset of crystallized?

  Steve

I am surprised that you have not received any replies from Tips members.Anyway
Sternberg's practical intelligence could be seen in street smarts
individuals. It is intelligence within a context. Cattell is basically a
personality trait theorist and "crystallized" is at the other spectrum of fluid
intelligence.I would not equate the two.Crystallized is a more restrictive idea
whereas practical could also be conceptualized as accomodation to fit
assimilative factors.
Ironically,Sternberg gave the example of someone trying to find a way out of
a traffic jam
as pratical intelligence.Interestingly enough if you use a GPS system.one
would have crystallized one's intelligence.GPS and crystallized have one thing
in common-they both mediate reality.
Hope this helps.I do stand corrected.

1.Negative reinforcement -trying to be like physics wannabes
2.Fundamental attribution error-depends on if one lives in an individualistic

3,Developmental stages- very vague;where does one stop and the other begins
-continous or discrete
4.Intelligence-what is it? Whites think that it has to do with the 3Rs and
abstract thinking
The term should be abolished from the language
5. Statistical significance
6.Need for achievement (Nach)-McC;elland took this idea to India,it was a major
flop
7.Stimulus and Response-very difficult to distinguish: cannot have one without
the other
8.Psychology as a science
9.Academic transfer-the idea that teaching critical thinking skills will turn
out better students -most students just want a good grade.
10,Learning and conditioning. This takes the prize. There is no such thing as
conditioning in the real world. As a matter of fact this is a topic that we can
do without.Learning and conditioning are artifacts of our domrstication.L and

Baseline measures are usually taken prior to putting an experimental variable

It is assumed that any changes below or above the baseline are due to the

is withdrawn and see if behavior returns to baseline,With this observation the
certainty of the experimental variable effects is assured. My question is that
although the withdrawal of medical treatment raises some ethical concerns, are
the cases in psychological experimental where the
attempts to return to baseline can be construed as a desirable experimental

[tips] Should adjuncts become full time?

2009-10-22 Thread michael sylvester
I am curious as to tipsters' feelings about promoting adjuncts to full time
positions. I personally feel that such a practice has its pluses and
minuses. What I do not like about it is that many highly qualified people who
may go through an exhaustive application process may not get a job because of
an adjunct who may have an edge.I have seen many good applicants not given a
job because of this.It would seem that being an adjunct is like a pre-existing
condition to getting some job security. Some schools in Florida have a penchant
for promoting adjuncts to full
iime but they advertise positions as a federal formality.Community colleges
seem to be the major culprits. And from my observation women adjuncts seem to
be at an advantage.
Personally I feel that adjuncts should sign a pledge that they will not apply
for any full time
position openings. There are too many PhDs oit there who are trying to break
into the academic market. The "Florida factor" is noticeable: some profs up
North will apply for openings in Florida
and will take a pay cut just to be in the sunshine State and to party on the
beach. On the other hand profs in Florida usually stay put,get laid back, and
struggle to produce academic research.
For some being an adjunct in Florida is like being professor emeritus On the
other hand because of the current economic conditions, institutions may favor
promoting adjuncts.

this and been part of this list since it began, and more good people have left
the list because of him that have joined, and I have resisted responding, but
there is so much good a list like this can do to have someone who has time on
his hands ruin. We all know I think that his examples of questions "A student
asked me this... another faculty member did this..." are all made up. We
saw earlier that his "adjunct" status to a bunch of colleges was not true or
exaggerated, so come on. We've got great people on this list with great minds

So, how does one change a culture from one assistive technology to a better
one? What sort of persuasion and social influence, directed to what audiences,
can bring us to a tipping point where a new technology becomes prevalent?

  Dave Myers

This is beginning to remind me of The American Beef Association sponsoring
research
to ascertain if beef is good for us.We should not be surprised if the
outcomes support beef usage. As the unchallenged cross-cultural dude on Tips,I
find "better one " assertion
very presumptive. Some people may still prefer the old technology even though
there is an updated version. The reason for that is some people have developped
a comfort zone with the old stuff and may not be able to handle internalized
changes that must be made, such as
different sensations, the slip-ups,that they occur in mechanical
adjustments, and the incorrect attributions to blaming the new device paradigm
for major or even minor social and other interactional errors. I suspect that
could be an issue for more advanced seniors.
The device seems to be confined to use in enclosed structural
situations such as churches, rooms.theatres, and so on.In this case it is limited
in its usage. If the target populations do not frequent those avenues,it could
be a hard sell..Although it is the law that buildings should have wheel chair
accessible ramps or be constructed in such a way to facilitate handicap
access, the fact that the hearing impaired is not distinguishable
from any other person in a group could be a factor in selling the idea to some
institutions.I am not sure of the nature of the concerns of thew ADA about
this.
It seems to fall more along the lines of the "sensory" challenged challenged
than demonstrable physically challenged.Note how braille is not required to be
available
  in public accomodation buildings.
I do think that it is good technology.Europeans tend to make
cities centers
for public, social, and cultural activities so it could be easier to implement
devices like the loop in buildings concentrated in the or two areas. In the U.S
we are spread out all over and there may be different population dynamics for
different areas.I think it is easier to implement public support in Europe than
in the U.S.Besides there are not too many of them
  in the various countries.

Since I am chair at the moment, I get a lot of information from students and
faculty about how many classes faculty cancel. I have no way to rate this,
since I really don't know what is "normal." I'm curious whether anyone has
come upon any sort of research or data on this. I need to know about what
percent of classes the average college faculty member misses. Naturally, I
realize this will vary from time to time, when, for example a faculty member is
ill or has an ill family member, etc. I also want to exclude from this any
classes where someone else proctors a test, for example. Still, I think some
range should be able to be established-or perhaps is established.

Also, I am wondering whether, in other colleges, chairs are asked to approve
absences for professional conferences, etc.

Thanks for any feedback on this.

Hi

Darwin did write a wonderful book on worms (and books on many other
topics) that should be required reading for all people wanting to
emulate his great mind. He even describes some tests of worm's
perceptual abilities based on research conducted in his study. The
essential question was whether worms pull the narrowest part of leaves
into their holes on cold nights by trial and error or by first feeling
out the narrowest point.

Jim

I am skeptical to apply any type of conditioning principles to
worms and other small
organisms. For one thing worms secrete pheronomes that are important in
their navigation,
Actually ants leave all types of fumic acid in their trails. And what we may
perceive as animal intelligence could really be fixed action patterns to
various pheronomic stimuli.I used to study those maze learning
experiments. No one ever thought that a rewarded rat leaves a different scent
along the pathway than a non-rewarded one. Come on "First feeling out the
narrowest point".
Did Darwin go through any type of peer review process?

An adjunct in our department, who is finishing his Ph.D., puts, as part of
his signature, Professor of Psychology. He, of course, does not have the rank
of any type of professor since he is an adjunct. Is his use of professor a
misuse or is it just a generic term for any of us who teach at universities?

If he applies to other places which may have tenure-track positions and he
uses this signature file, is he misleading these places?

Finally, if you believe that his use of professor is inappropriate, should we
inform him of this.

One last point. We are very happy with him and, when he finishes his degree,
we would be very interested in hiring him on a tenure-track line if we ever get
one in this miserable economy.

He should not use the professor label since he is not a professor. As a

evidence that he could misrepresenr himself in other critical areas academia

anyone had heard of any neat applications of classical conditioning in recent
  research?

Didn't C P Snow state that Jewish people were highly intelligent?
Btw,I read somewhere that the Japanese are most intelligent because they use
both right and left hemispheres of the brain whereas Europeans use only 10%
of their brains.Norther Europeans
are supposedly more intelligent than Eastern Europeans like
Polish,Hungarians (the exception being the Czech Republic) and Italians
designated the same IQ as Africans.US immigration policy sought to keep
Southern Europeans out of the U.S because of presumed inferior

intelligence.

[tips] Bystander /Broke Back mountain

2009-10-16 Thread michael sylvester
There is some good news for those who may be bystanders and may experience an
approach-avoidance conflict. It is now possible to help someone by rapid chest
compressions. No need for mouth to mouth resuscitation. This is important because
many may hesitate helping someone by mouth to mouth because of some fear of
catching some disease or may feel uncomfortable about doing that, especially to
someone of the Broke Back mountai
orientation.
With chest compressions being just as effective this conflict could be resolved.

The acid rock group Steppenwolf has a a song titled the Pusher with the words
"God damn the pusher." Well ,if they were singing that same song today they
could change the words to "God bless the Brits government pushers". You see the
British government has an approach to
drug addiction by providing addicts with pure heroin and cocaine.Apparently the
program is working.Street crimes are down, bad drugs are off the street and
addicts can wean themselves
back to a normal non-addictive life.

[tips] African roots of clinical psychology

2009-10-16 Thread michael sylvester
WHAT THEY NEVER TOLD YOU IN PSYCHOLOGY CLASS:

Freud is given credit for all types of psychoanalytic stuff but the truth is
that FReud was not an original.Freud took many ideas from the Greeks and the
Greeks stole many of their ideas from Egypt and Africa. As a matter of fact the
roots of clinical psychology lie in the ancient teachings of many of the
African philosophers.
>From dreams to behaviorism to gestalt were been emphasized in the writings of
>Egyptian scholars to the practices of the healing arts of the various
>ethnicities
of Africa. But there was a difference the Europeans had to modify some of those
teachings that triclkle down from Africa to suit the nature of their
societies,As a matter of fact the mediterranean was like a Roman and beyond
were the barbarians. The Eurocentric approach grew out of that tradition of
emphasizing individualism because of the break up of those hoarding tribes.
Clinical pschology in ancient Africa and Egypt were focused on the
collectivist aspect of those societies, hence family therapy were emphasized. The
modern
Eurocentric clinical psychologist is walking in the footsteps of the
shamans, black magic praticioners and the witch doctors of ancient times. The
first DSM was located in the ancient scholarly libraries of Alexandria,Egypt.
Africans who lived close to the serengetti had schools of thought similar to
the ideas of gestalt,behaviorists
and rational emotive therapy.
The Africans knew that scizophrenia and manic-depression were
brain
disorders and were the first to practice psychosurgery to ease those brain
disorders. It should be noted that the Eurocentric clinical model failed to
help and alleviate the problems of many African-Americans.In the 1960s the
Black muslims did more to help black people in and out of prisons achieve a
sense of efficacy and competence and helped managed many of the social problems
at that time.African-Americans do not need to be under the supervision of the
Eurocentric paradigm but the teachings of Malcolm,Elizah.and Farrakhan
with roots in the African tradition are very effective. And so is the healing
that takes place through the collective spirit.

AND THIS IS WHAT THEY NEVER TOLD YOU IN PSYCHOLOGY CLASS.

Re: [tips] Women not happy

2009-10-15 Thread michael sylvester

It helps if you actually read details of the study before commenting on
it:

"The Paradox of Declining Female Happiness", page 14:

"Trends in happiness among blacks are examined in columns one and two.
These data show that happiness has trended quite strongly upward for
both female and male African-Americans, erasing about two-thirds of the
large racial differences in subjective well-being that were evident in
the early 1970s (Stevenson and Wolfers, 2008b)."

I do not need to read the details of the study.I tend to be skeptical when
white
reaearchers pontificate about the black condition. In the 1970s conditions
for blacks in the U.S
were still in the struggle phase for equity but were manageable.Black women
have always have a sense of well being about themselves.Black males have had
major problems to overcome
especially in the 1960-1970s.The upward trend in the so called happiness
index(as devised by white researchers) now is not surprising because many
factors have contributed to a sense of efficacy and competence in addition
to dimensions of black culture such as strength in struggle, spirritual
orientation and so on. Are you aware that black women are more satisfied
with their body image than white women? White women are always talking about
losing weight.
I suspect that white researchers throw in a few blacks in the sample or may
even utilize some black researchers to show some degree of objectivity, but
the variables may be interpreted differently. I contend that this study is
more about white women now.
Hope this helps. As previously stated I am not opposed to studies like this
as long they
stay within the parameters of the subject variables.I woild even venture to
say that "suspiciousness of experimenter's intent" is a varuable that should
be considered.A white researcher may get a different answer from a black
person than if that experimenter was black.

Hope this helps.

[tips] Women not happy

2009-10-14 Thread michael sylvester
University of Pennsylvania researchers have released results of a study that
showed that women are not too happy.I only wished that they could qualify this
by stating that it is white women in the U.S that are not happy. So the
expression that "you have come a long way baby" should .be followed by "but you
are not too happy".as commented by a reporter.
They did not explain why those white women were not happy, but as the
cross-cultural dude and gender expert on Tips, let me lay out a framework
for some possible though not exhaustive explanations:
1) it could be differences may be internalized as deficiencies
2) in an individualistic oriented society, the collective aspect of feminimity
has been suppressed. It used to be that "let's" was an important aspect
of the lexicon. The motivation "let's do lunch" is being challenged by more
business type of orientation."Let's" represented a common bond that is rapidly
disappearing.
3) we can bet that it has to do with the nature of modern day relationships
4) Because of the nature of this eurocentric capitalistic society,it could be
that she is under so much stress that, that like the old adage "a woman's work
is never complete"
5) where is the fun for women
6) I believe how we treat women tells us about the nature of our spirituality.
As a matter of fact students have asked me what is my religion.I usually point
out
to a female student and say "there she is."Now we have to pray together".

Psychology is just so darn confusing!

I do not buy all of it. If confectionery is correlated with some degree of
violence it is probably
due to the high fructose corn syrup in those products;Consumption of corn
leads to aggression.
British toffees (more likely to contain cane sugar) do not seem to produce
such results.

[tips] Academic nullification

2009-10-14 Thread michael sylvester
I am curious as to how many tipsters subbscribe to the idea of academic
nullification.
Simply this is the notion that states that profs should be cognizant that
there may be students in a class who may have been deprived of opportunities
for academic excellence because of racial, ethnic, poverty, and other class
factors. Hence the assignment of grades should take those variables as
pre-existing conditions affecting performance. I personally have made it a rule
of not flunking black students enrolled in my courses.

2009-10-12 Thread michael sylvester
Since we have a thread on Stormy Monday,I thought I woild throw in a query
about the song "One toke over the line".You would assume that I would know
since I am also DJ supreme on Tips. But I do have a problem of categorizing this
song by Brewer and Shipley. Is it soft rock, gospel or mellow spiritual? I am not
even sure about the meaning of "toke".
It reminds me of another song called "Elvira" by the Oakridge Boys which sounds
like
gospel but Elvira is also a country line dance song.It seems they could use
some bass voices
in One toke.Btw,the best version of Stormy Monday I have in my Dj collection is
that of Albert Collins Live in Japan.
