Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Experts - comments on these Touch mods
Also if one set FLAC = PCM (disabled) you get another weird effect . If i do this in 7.6 i get mp3 if I synk Touch and an ip3k player and tries a 24/96 track. Maybe i have disable some more settings so that only choice that remains for the server is PCM. Just slightly curious ,when i tried with my SB3 it certainly did nothing i could hear. But I'm leaning on that it is hogwash anyway, using occams razor here. Is this is small differences we are talking about. An the mechanism we are talking about, low jitter vs even lower jitter when it's unclear exactly where jitter that could be heard by humans is a problem. And has anybody really measured a different jitter flac vs wav vs pcm . So any reasonable physical explanation is far fetched . So which is more likely when testing this in a *sighted* test *and*hearing a difference: 1. there is a real difference 2. you are a victim of some expectation bias, placebo whatever. the third option is that you hear no difference, there could still be one but it's to small to be heard . Which of these two is most unpredictable bug riddled and complex. And shows very limited repeatability when performing the same task over and over again. 1. The Touch 2. The Human brain This can be sorted out by using human ears to test, but augmented by statistics in controlled abx blind test. or by measurement . I don't have the means to perform an abx test or hardware good enough to run audiodiff maker especially with the required low jitter . But if anyone succeeds in this please report, then i would consider going the FLC PCM route If it can be shown, by a measurment that a tiny difference exist's in favor for using the FLAC PCM route i would also consider it, the difference may be very small. But if one is feeding your audiphile ocd, many small degradations here and there in your system could add up to something that could be heard. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 and assorted amps SiriuS, Classe' Primare and Dynadio speakers, Contour 4 Contour Center, and Contour 1.3SE for the rear ch. [SlimDevices: Touch] USB Powered Hub
Hi! I've got a Lacie Rikiki (320GB) hooked up to my Touch and it works fine. When I press the screen while playing (Sometimes accidently) it changes the playing screen (amplifier etc...) and then a message says Squeezebox Server has Stopped. Then I start the server again, this is a bit of a pain. The memory usage is around 71% sometimes 80%. I was wondering, if I buy a USB powered Hub, will this help and take some memory usage off the touch and avoid the server stoppages? I also have a 1TB WD Elements but seems to be twice as slow as the Lacie 320GB. Another thing, after updating to the latest software, my thumbs from my mp3 tracks have disappeared.!? [SlimDevices: Touch] post-update whiteout blues
I'm having an odd problem with my Touch after installing updates. After rebooting, it's as if the screen is set to white text on a white background: just an unreadable bright rectangle. Everything else is OK. It responds to both my finger and the remote, although I can't tell what it's doing, and it plays music quite happily when driven from the web GUI. This has now happened three times. The first time, I tried everything I could think of to get it back to normal, including a factory reset, before giving it up as bricked. I left it without power overnight, and was surprised to find it working just fine the next morning. The second time I just unplugged it and left it, again finding it working OK the next day. This time I re-applied power 30 mins, an hour, two hours and about 7 hours after installing the latest update, with no luck. The following morning it was back to normal. I'm trying to figure out what might be causing this. Might it be something to do with the ambient light sensors (solution: apply updates in total darkness), or might something be overheating while the flash is being rewritten during the update (solution: install update in refrigerator), or is this one of those wonderful intermittent faults which involve just a few misbehaving electrons, where just thinking about the fault can change the outcome? Any circumvention suggestions welcome. JohnSwenson;556585 Wrote: ...The suggestion that all you have to do is run ADM to tell you if there is any change is only valid if the AD converter you are using is significantly better than the Touch itself. From my tests I do know the Touch has significantly less than 50ps jitter. You are going to have to look far and wide to find an AD converter that has say 5ps of jitter so you can make meaningful measurements with ADM. You simply cannot make meaningful jitter measurements of a device with 30ps of jitter with test equipment that has 100ps. The results are completely meaningless. ADM is perfectly fine for detecting things like frequency response differences etc. But if you are making a hypothesis that some code change is somehow causing a change in jitter, and you want to use ADM to see if there is a change in the analog outs, the AD converter used HAS to have significantly lower jitter than the device under test... John S. John, I'm not sure I can agree with this. Jitter in/before the DAC manifests as changes in the frequency and amplitude content of the analogue output of the DAC (aka distortion!). The ADC (regardless of its intrinsic jitter, assuming it isn't horrendous) is accurate enough to capture these differences. If it's good enough to capture small variations in amplitude and frequency it's good enough. As has been repeatedly stated, if you get a deep, deep null ADM test it cannot happen by accident - it really does mean that the output is the same. If you don't get a null we can discuss the consequences until the cows come home :-) The fact that you can get deep null by playing the same track twice with no changes to the setup (with the ADC clock locked to the transport clock to eliminate clock drift) means that ADM does work. It also means that the ADC jitter effects are nulled out... IF jitter changes the analogue output of the DAC, then ADM will detect it. I'm a long time user of Squeezeboxes, first SB2 and now the Touch. I only use the digital output. In my opinion, Touch sounds much better than SB2 even a bit moded (transformer balanced output, filter chokes removed and linear supply). The sound has much more details, much better soundstage and much more bass strength for the main differences. I installed the Soundcheck's software modes. Big differences again I would describe it as at least three layers of veil removed, great. The attacks of drum or guitar are much faster and soundstage and low level details are much better. But I have a problem with this new sound, the bad records which sounded bad before now sound very bad! The opposite is true for the good ones. It is a bit hard to get accustom to this new sound I don't know if somebody shares this impression but with a lot of modern Hi-end systems music is reproduced like with a magnifier, every small detail can be heard as if it was miked from inches. This does not correspond to a real live musical performance. To resume, the mods doesn't change the sound of the Touch but the result depends on the system and ones preferences BTW I do not stream FLACs as PCM because I use Inguz plug-in and it gives me much more gains than reducing Touch CPU activity. [SlimDevices: Touch] Changing My Server Setup Getting the best from Touch
I wondered if I could run something past you guys, as I'm not sure if what I'm planning on doing is a good way to go. Your feedback would be appreciated. I used to run a Duet connected wirelessly to a HP ML115 G5 server running SBS and Inguz without room correction. The ML115 is very noisy and uses a lot of electricity. I then bought a Touch, initially for two reasons: native 24/96 support low jitter SPDIF out. I also fancied trying out TinySC, which seemed like a great way of getting the ML115 out of the equation. Anyway, TinySC is not quite up to scratch and doesn't sound quite as good as the output from SBS/Inguz. Also, the powered USB HDD enclosure I use has a fan and the HDD is not silent. What I want to do is set up a system optimized for the Touch sound quality that is silent in my living room. My proposed system is as follows. - A new low power silent PC in the living room running SBS and Inguz (with RC this time..) This will be either a Fit PC 2i or home built mini-ITX Atom D510 with a SSD/USB Flash Drive for OS. Maybe the new Tranquil PC box if I'm doing well financially. - The Touch with a wired connection to the new silent server. - A NAS storing my music in another room. This may be a Netgear WNDR3700 with my existing external HDD plugged in the back. Or a passively cooled QNAP NAS. My questions are: - Will this give me the sound quality benefits of linking the Touch and Server with a hard wired connection? - Will storing the music on a NAS negatively impact performance? I would then wire that computer to the router. This would all be outside of your listening room. Finally I would connect the Touch to the SBS PC via the router using wi-fi. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Changing My Server Setup Getting the best from Touch
Take a close look at the specs of the low power silent PC and the requirements of Inguz DRC (http://inguzaudio.com/installation/). Inguz demands a lot more processing power than you'll usually find in that kind of pc. The system requirements indicate a 2GHz CPU is the minimum and other posts suggest that is really the _bare_ minimum. If you are going to store the library in another room (on a NAS), why not put the server in that other room as well? Then you wouldn't have to go with a fanless server, and you could get something that could run Inguz more comfortably and cost less. Wherever you locate things, aim to have at least the server connected to the network via ethernet (ie, wired). If you can wire the Touch as well, all the better. As for storing the music library on the NAS, I think the only performance hit you would run into is slower library scan times because it goes over the network instead of being handled locally on the server. But that shouldn't be a big worry unless you have an absolutely huge library. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79889 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Same hidden server also serves music to my TRANSPORTER in music listening room and BOOM in bedroom. Transporter Boom both connected via ethernet. So to your point, getting noisy stuff out of the listening room is one of the nice features of the SB players. The server and disks can all be elsewhere so long as you have a good connection between the SB player and the server (either WIFI or ethernet). -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79889 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

The system requirements indicate a 2GHz CPU is the minimum and other posts suggest that is really the _bare_ minimum. I've searched these forums and some people have indicated that Inguz works fine on an Atom. I know this contradicts the minimum specs somewhat. Then you wouldn't have to go with a fanless server, and you could get something that could run Inguz more comfortably and cost less. Wherever you locate things, aim to have at least the server connected to the network via ethernet (ie, wired). If you can wire the Touch as well, all the better. To be honest silent and low powered appeals no matter where the server or NAS is located. As I replied to Phil, I want to wire the server to the Touch because John Swenson has indicated this is a better option for sound quality. As for storing the music library on the NAS, I think the only performance hit you would run into is slower library scan times because it goes over the network instead of being handled locally on the server. But that shouldn't be a big worry unless you have an absolutely huge library. That doesn't sound like a show stopper, which is good news. -- badboygolf16v badboygolf16v's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19486 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79889 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I don't think there is any difference wired vs wi-fi on the DIGITAL output of the Touch. At the end of the day these are just opinions. You will have to decide... Of course, if you can wire it by all means do - you will have an even more trouble free setup :-) It's just that normally (unless your house is pre-wired with Cat5/6) it's a pain to pull ethernet through rooms. [SlimDevices: Touch] My Touch is loosing time
Hi, I've had a Touch for a few months now, and it's been great - except for one thing... The clock is loosing time. At present it is now about 8 mins slow. The time was correct when I first set it up and appeared to stay correct for a few weeks, but now is slowing dropping minutes. Anyone have/had this problem? Any suggestions on a fix? It's running stand-alone with the internal server (TinySC), with a USB hard drive attached. It's connected to the internet via a wired connection. I don't see any way to manually set the time or get it to re-sync over the internet. Hi Peter, I know you have things working now with an external server, but would it be all right to answer some questions? I'm trying to understand why some people are having such problems and I still don't have a good handle on why some people have major disconnection isssues. First off, is the drive getting its power from the USB bus or does it have its own power supply? If its bus powered have you tried running with a powered hub? Did that make any difference? There have been suggestions that these dropping connection issues are power related and that an external supply connection should fix them. Another possibility is the drive going to sleep on its own and dropping the connection. Most drives when they go to sleep just spin down the platter but leave the connection to the bus intact. There are some indications that this may not be the case for some drives. Have you tried playing with the drives sleep settings? Does turning sleep off altogether make the connection problems go away? These are the two scenarios that I know of that have been determined to be a prime cause in some cases. It would be really helpful to know if there is something else going on. Note that the issue in most of this thread is when headphones are plugged in. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=535660postcount=25 Others should chime in, but if you are asking about whether the TOUCH running tinySC will work fine with FLAC, the answer is yes. The threads you are likely reading are more related to sound quality at the upper end of the quality perspective, of which it likely requires golden ears and very, very, very good equipment to detect these differences (and reasonable people even debate whether any of these differences, if they exist, are audible). You can drive yourself crazy thinking too hard about the threads on power supplies, CPU decoding interference, PCM vs FLAC vs WAV, etc. These topics are interesting, but way beyond the basic issue of will the TOUCH play bit perfect FLAC files well into either analog outputs or digital outputs using the tinySC software. A more important issue for you at the moment is the CD ripping itself. You want to do this once, and do it right. You need a secure ripper, preferably one with accuraterip. In windows, this means EAC or dbpoweramp (not itunes or WMP). I use dbpoweramp. Mp3tag will also be your friend for tag work after ripping, if needed. I rip to FLAC and then create mp3 copy for use on ipods, etc. And WAV doesn't have standard tagging. So FLAC is also better in that regard. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79896 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Standalone with HDD Which File Format?
I have been using an attached hard drive for about a month now. Every weekend I add anywhere between 20 to 30 gb of music (50/50 mp3/FLAC) to the 200gb already stored on it from my music collection on my NAS. This is the same music that has always worked with my Touch/PC/NAS arrangement, except I deleted all the non-music files except for one cover.jpg for each directory. The attached drive uses external power because the Touch doesn't supply enough power for it to work right (not a big deal to me). I really haven't witnessed any buffering problems or error messages. So, I suggest, for quick and dirty ripping, rip to mp3 but if you want to conserve music quality rip to FLAC using moderate compression. -- carib carib's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34240 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79896 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

If you have that much music, you probably have an amp that cost say $1,500 speakers that cost $2,500 or more and who knows how much in cables and furniture for the system. You probably also have a at least $1,000 worth of computer equipment in your house and pay a monthly bill for internet and TV of over $100 per month plus maybe $15 dollars a month for Rhapsody. If you are like me, you also have a touch or IPhone with iPeng to run your Squeezeboxes. Now you like the Squeezebox concept and want to get the killer quality from playing those FLAC files through the latest Squeezebox. Is is reasonable to expect a Touch costing $299 to handle those 15,000 FLAC files through a USB powered hard drive with TinySC? That's like saying that my IPod should cost $300, be wireless, be open source, hold 300 gig of lossless files, play internet radio and many music services, have many free plug-ins, come with a remote control and have exceptional audio quality. My point is that you do get a lot for $300 with the Touch. You may not get a music player that can handle 15,000 files without a sever. I have no agenda or particular objective in mind. I don't see that that matters anyway. It is just opinion. (If I have any point of view it is that I would not like to see Squeezebox products go away. They offer the opportunity for great sound quality, convenience and flexibility that is hard to beat for anywhere near the price.) Fairness is not particularly conducive to quantification. Is it fair that someone makes $500,000 a year when others are starving? What should the income disparity be in the US? Should it be the same in India? Is it fair that I can't build a gas station next to your house? Is it fair that Apple doesn't tell me how large a PDF file I can view on an Ipad? Is it fair that Microsoft failed to tell me that I could not edit a complex 300 page book with lots of photographs and charts in Publisher? Is it fair that Logitech doesn't tell you how many music files TinySC can handle? None of these are simple issues that can be proven by garnering facts. My fairness point is that, I for one, am not upset or surprised that the Touch has trouble with some large music collections on at least some USB drives. As far as vilification, there are posts claiming that Logitech advertised the Touch as being capable of playing an unlimited number of files without the server and essentially accusing Logitech of false advertising. Those claims are not accurate, as others have pointed out. I am not, however, without sympathy for someone who buys a Touch to use at the office and plugs in a USB drive only to discovery that his collection is too big or his drive has some compatibility problem or his collection is poorly tagged for whatever reason. I would try a few things and if they didn't work, I would send it back for a refund. I have returned many products that didn't work out. Before long I will succumb to another interesting gadget. Thanks to all for making this an interesting thread. What is unfair is the title of this thread. It is laughable to suggest that for someone to post their real life experience with a product is unfair. Regardless of the size of the collection, this product does not work as advertised as far as the USB/TinySC goes. Plain and simple. It is rife with issues that many of us continue to experience. To say that the feature is half-baked would be kind. I can't even disconnect the hard drive without having to hard reset the unit to pick it up again. I have been using ALAC and I still can't it to play an entire song all the way through, although I just updated the unit to 7.6 on Friday, which I could swear I read around these parts had a fix for this issue. Most of us on here don't spend thousands on stereo equipment like you think we do if we have large music collections. We are simply looking for a solution that would prevent us from having to run a server or second computer constantly or painstakingly figure out how to setup a Sheevaplug. While I do consider myself somewhat computer savvy, some people, including myself, are unable to hack into to software on things like the Touch or even care to. Or just deal with issues like this. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Standalone with HDD Which File Format?
Just my opinion, but if already in WAV, convert to FLAC. If ripping for the first time (or re-ripping) rip to FLAC at -5. Touch handles FLAC as native. And as for large HHD, it is my opinion that external powered drives are best. The issues I have seen with external drives have been the power saving features of those drives and how that affects the expected performance of the Touch as in if the drive goes to sleep or likes to spin down every couple of minutes. My large Seagate USB was giving me fits until I disabled all the power saving/sleep crap. If you run into issues, call or email Tech Support or tell us what is happening and the Forum Members will try to troubleshoot it. It was straight forward for me, but I was in the Beta and went through all the growing pains from the beginning when one had to SSH into the Touch to run lines of code to get it to mount the drive, scan the drive, start TinySC. Those days are now long gone. Look here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox_Touch_as_a_Home_Music_Server http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Setting_Up_Squeezebox_Touch_Server Choosing FLAC as file formats is good to, given thats it's the format with best support in squeezeboxes and squeezeboxserver . Encoding thoose at -5 and use reasonable sized cover art 500*500 in jpg format. Organize the albums in folders on the drive artis/albums/songs and put a cover.jpg file in each folder (this being the cover art), Maybe you should not embed cover art in each file but use the cover.jpg approach, nothing wrong with embedded art (I use it all the time) but Touch as a server is not that fast so scanning takes time . If you use EAC or dBp + mp3tag you will get you metadata in order pls do not mix tagging standards in the files Ie both FLAC tags and id3v(1) tags in the same file . Do not bother with cue sheets and whatnots . WAV and tagging is not that well supported . Oh the wiki links might not be perfectly up to date the do some changes from time to time. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 and assorted amps SiriuS, Classe' Primare and Dynadio speakers, Contour 4 Contour Center, and Contour 1.3SE for the rear ch.
