John, thanks for this explanation, which probably explains why, even after a successful scan, I still experience problems with 20,000 tracks. the Touch will play standalone or streaming to just a Radio but is intermittantly very poor when trying to stream to both synchronised. This would suggest that the synchronisation code is pushing over the 'memory' limit. However it sometimes works, so it would suggest that some arbitrary memory swaps are succesful and some are not, is there anyway to influence this? Can non-memory external issues (e.g. wifi) also 'destabilise' the Touch, e.g. a network induced need to rebuffer overloads the Touch and the extra memory requirement slows it down and it can't keep up with the streams and rebuffering then becomes required every few seconds. I'm short of cash at the moment and not sure whether some Homeplugs to replace wifi would yield better value than a SheevaPlug? Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Last few seconds of song being cut off...
Tony, you can raise the bug yourself at http://bugs.slimdevices.com/ the best way to help is to be very specific with your details so that others (notably QA at Logitech but also interested users/devs) can replicate and confirm. that means including as many variables as you can (type of file, size of library, type of USB drive, number of players, sync or not). logfiles may also help if they show something. teh bug process is in a sticky http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74846 I suspect I've experienced the same problem, but wasn't paying enough attention to confirm and its inconsistent with me. I'm having lots of other problems which may be overloading the CPU and therefore this may be another symptom but could equally be unrelated. If I capture anything I'll hunt down and add to your bug. others can add their experiences and vote. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Serving more than 2 additional squeezeboxes
I'd proceed with extreme caution. My Touch struggles to serve to one radio and one receiver (the streaming half of the duet) as well as itself. It will rarely work well with just one other unit. I think many of my problems may be down to large collection 20,000 FLAC and the fact that this is all wireless. I am hoping that some improvements will come over time. The Touch server is very Squeezed and so extra load can degrade performance, e.g. using picture viewer or the fancy Now playing displays when pushing the limit. So, based on my experience below the recommended limit, I think you may also struggle. That said, when driven by a p.c. or server based SBS, it is fantastic. So get them and use as controller/players (looks like you've got the computers to host full SBS). -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio and 1 * Touch controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78199 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
I noticed that even after a 'good' scan, every time I remounted the USB-HD, it always found 1670 new files. This was strangely close to the number of albums (1614). I then remembered that when EAC rips each disc it creates an m3u playlist in each directory (back on fullfatSBS this had doubled-up my music until I pointed the playlist folder elsewhere). Searching the USB-HD i found excatly 1670 m3u playlists, so I deleted 18 and then remounted, only 1652 'new' files. I'll go ahead and delete the balance (a playlist = album is pretty useless anyway and see if I can turn off in EAC). They don't show under playlists on tinySC anyway. My question is what impact do these 'spurious' files have? tinySC is clearly identifying them as music, so must aim to do something but then doesn't recognise that they have been scanned at the next remount. I don't know whether the presence of these files has any impact of scan performacne or resulting server performance. will report back if any noticeable changes. -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio and 1 * Touch controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

there's been a lot of debate on this elsewhere in the forums. basically - the Touch honours the USB spec but many USB drives don't. many computers exceed the spec so the out of gauge USB drives still work. sounds like your drive draws too much current for the Touch, rather than a dedicated ac adaptor, you could try a powered USB hub. -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio and 1 * Touch controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77613 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I'm UK based and tried Marlo's 'register as North America' trick but no improvement. [I don't know why I need to enter a region since I connect via ethernet NOT wireless] In both cases advanced/Squeezebox Information/mySB.com Info shows me connected to Ashburn,VA. I have found a couple of things:- 1) if you switch off all SBS (both big and tinySC/Touch server) then Touch has nowhere to go but mySB.com 2) you can "force" the switch via Settings/Advanced/Networking/... in either case then Touch (as a player) will connect to mySB.com and then your apps are available (the latter leaves Touch server running). If you use route 1) then you can start Touch server in background w/o losing stream (last fm or BBC radio) or My Apps, but if you switch to that sevrer then they go. thanks for the ideas:- both plugins were included in tinySC. I'd already connected via mySB to switch Touch scrobbling on. last.fm works via hugeSBS and via MySB with scrobbling hugeSBS scrobbles from its library The scrobbler screen in the touch shows the correct account. However, I had lots of trouble connecting Touch to mySB, it didn't appear in My Music/Switch Library and if I select My Apps - it keeps saying "invalid mysqueezebox.com username or password". there are lots of configurable options in the webui which won't be accessible in tinySC/internal Touch Server/STS (squeezebox Touch Server). I haven't seen (and don't expect to see) all those options in tinySC (sorry can't check now as trying to debug other issues in my Touch). Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Network test on Touch does not go above 2000kbps
triode, network test can be read either way - test the network between this device and server or test entire network - therefore some people, especially without all the history, will make an interpretation which doesn't match reality. those of us that are natural english speakers are divided by a common language, heaven help those who are using it as a second language. I think 'connection test' may be less likely to be misinterpreted. the tool is still useful but unfortunately not definitive when trouble-shooting as I expected - identifying low CPU power could be equally useful. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Turn off other players from Touch
This looks to have been a conscious design decision:- http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15579 I can't fathom the design logic. My inclination is that the menu option "switch off " should only appear when the device (Touch or Radio) is controlling a renote player (not itself), i.e. the device is acting as a controller. The Radio has odder behaviour when controlling anotherplayer: short press on standby switches off the remote player and leaves radio playing with standby screen saver. long press leaves remote player playing and switches off and powers down Radio. The on-device 'standby' button, whether soft (touch) or hard (radio) should probably have different functionality when controlling a remote player. Giving options between "switch off and choose this " "switch off this " "switch off both and ". does that make sense? -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio and 1 * Touch controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77392 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Network test on Touch does not go above 2000kbps
I recently used the network test as part of debugging (an ultimately unrelated issue). If you're considering reworking it, then here's my feedback:- 1) the different format between SB3/Boom and Radio/Receiver is awkward to provide a single answer 2) the controller/radio history is useful to show consistency of perofrmance but a calculated average would be nice. 3) it appears to be a player connection test (rather than the whole network) 4) The SB3 tests timeout, making it difficult to test all players simultaneously (my SB3's are on different floors, so I start one test run upstairs start the second and run down to see if there is an impact). 5) there is no clear 'pass' parameter - is 95% required or 100%. 6) my network happily streams synchronised FLAC to 5 players for weeks on end. The tests say it isn't capable of that! my experience is in the following http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14352 I like the suggestion of a 'ten minute test' for all players with a clear summary (perhaps a bit more than pass/fail) so that a network can be given the 'all-clear' or 'implicated' when testing issues. Recognise that what I would like could well be constrained by other limitations, including available effort ;-) keep up the good work. -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio and 1 * Touch controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77349 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Local music service has been stopped due to a problem
KJAM, the continual rescanning has been driven by several reasons. 1) I had to tweak delete a load of duplicates (my USB harddrive is acting as family backup so have sister and GF's music on it, which overlaps). If I could have pointed at a file within USB this may have been avoided 2) I was then fixing the tags on the non-dupe's in their libraries. 3) Then I powered it all off overnight 4) Then I have switched it off numerous times to try and get it to behave! I finished tweaking the files early this morning and this afternoon it seems to have settled down - we'll see what tomorrow brings. [SlimDevices: Touch] Turn off other players from Touch
I'm running Touch as a server (STS) and also using it to control and serve sync'd files to a Radio and a Receiver. The Off problem. I am having trouble switching the other device on and/or off. If I select them via choose player and then use the Touch Standby button. The remote player stops, the Touch screen goes dark but the Touch continues playing (and displaying the time). If I want to control the Touch or server as player, I need to bring it out of this mode. The only option seems to be, tap the screen, hit the standby and the remote device switches back on. The ON problem. This is a bit more intermittant, and was working okay when I started typing this, but has since stopped. Right now my controller 'attached' to a separate WHS SBS server only sees the two players 'attached' to that server. This makes swapping a server from one to the other difficult. Occasionally I have done this this by 'getting' the controller to see the STS by using Switch Library within My Music to switch to STS. However the Controller can't see STS at the moment and this has the undesired affect of moving a player from one server to the other. At this point the webui can see all players as can the STS, which are no good if I'm in another room with the controller! If I've missed something obvious I'm happy to learn/be corrected/ridiculed. -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio and 1 * Touch controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77392 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Track stops playing
Tripmaster, are you using Touch standalone or with any other players? I've been experiencing rebuffering all morning using Touch to play synchronised FLAC to a radio and receiver. There are some logs in http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77322&page=2 but I'm hoping to keep issues separate so that is focussed on 'Local Music service has been stopped'. I'd just switched the receiver back to my main server (WHS) and switched off the radio. My plan was to just listen to the Touch for some hours and see if buffering was better or worse. I had one instance of rebuffering in about 10 minutes then ... moved 6 files on both WHS and the shared Touch USB drive that were causing an album to be duplicated... SB3 on desk (connected to WHS) but not playing lost connection to server! A few seconds later the Touch stopped playing and went blank, it went back through power up cycle (logitech logo et al.) and then "Sorry, your device had to restart due to a system error. Is it OK if " SB3 went blank and then came back connected to Squeezebox Touch. I switched SB3 back to WHS library after a while, so if that had also fallen over, it could have restarted before I checked. I honestly don't know if the crash is related to buffering, the file move or the other thread problems - have numerous other niggles but don't want to overload the forums with separate threads which may be related. -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio and 1 * Touch controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77243 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Local music service has been stopped due to a problem
I have had some similar problems (also with a Smasung Story Station - 1.5T)/ more often it hangs on searching media formusic files. However I have managed to scan in 25000 music files, from some 60,000 files on the drive. My current inclinations are:- whilst scanning, do nothing else! don't share the USB drive (and start tidying it up) don't play music don't load new applets don't search for music Some of these maybe overkill but suggest that you let at least one scan succeed before any messing (which is hard with a new toy!!) I have also found that stopping and starting the server doesn't always give a clean start and therefore I 1) stop server 2) eject USB drive 3) power off USB drive 4) power on USB drive, which is then detected, restarts server and initiates scan. not 100% but good luck. -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio (Touch ordered) controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77322 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
mine also 'hung' showing 'scanning media for music files. please wait ...' but not progressing. I eventually got it to scan through a combination of 'stop server', 'eject USB' and putting Touch into standby (I haven't used the factory reset). I powered it down overnight (eject USB first) ad today it recognises/remembers all teh files on the USB drive but setting/advanced/squeezebox_server still shows 'scanning media for music files. please wait...' setting/advanaced/squeezebox_information shows 'rescanning music library...' where it shows "Library Information" when done. Drilling in shows 'empty'. Mr-Sukebe and tank121, what do you see now and have you put Touch into Standby or powered off since the successful scan? -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio (Touch ordered) controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
go to settings/advanced/squeezebox server which should give you a progress report. I think it will be slower if you are playing music whilst it scans but see my post as I think I crashed mine byinstalling an applet (which always reboots Squeezeplay devices like teh touch) mid-scan. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=533775#post533775 -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio (Touch ordered) controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Good Practises
an update: somehow or other (and possibly loading a n applet and subsequent reboot) tinySC had got itself confused. ejecting and remounting USB drive didn't help. Eventually the Touch rebooted and after the subsequent USB remount started to scan - finding 53,927 files and started to scan them (estimated time 2and a half hours). I then put on the radio (triode's iplayer applet) and tim eleft for scan started to increase! Similarly playing some tracks, from the part scanned library worked (with 5s delay and one hiccup after 2/3s play). Scan time left started increasing again. Switching to my normal server and scan appeared to be continuing (file count increased) but time left was frozen at 596523:14:07 (had previously been hours/minutes). So, unsurprisingly, any extra tasks will increase time to complete a scan. Still nervous about what caused the initial scan hang-up. -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio (Touch ordered) controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77219 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Good Practises
I bought the Touch to give to my girlfriend with a 1.5T USB drive, which will be my off-site backup. I'm currently playing with it and have a few queries:- A) Scan speed/progress 1) I foolishly downloaded an applet whilst it was scanning the USB drive and had found around 11000 tracks (about half). I hadn't thought through that the applet would then reboot the Touch and now the 'scan results' through Settings/Advanced/Squeezebox Server only shows "scanning media for music files please wait..." 2) I used the Touch as player via my normal server, does switching to an 'external' library affect scanning? 3) I played some music on Touch via its TinySC, through Browse Music Folder, woudl this affect scanig speeed? 4) I'm now using the BBC iplayer applet, and still get "scanning media for music files please wait..." but my USB drive is showing no sign of activity. B) USB folders. I'm using my USB drive for family backups so it has all my FLAC files, my MP3 files (for my ipod) plus my sisters and girlfriends. This will lead to multiple duplications! Is there any way to 'constrain' TinySC to a subset of the USB drive? C) Justification I was sceptical on size and clarity of the Touch to repace the VFD on the Classics (don't know why, all other Squeeze products have been great) but now its sat in front of me, I love it. How do I justify buying another one? -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio (Touch ordered) controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77219 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Future Touch owners - how do you plan to use the embedded SqueezeboxServer?
A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73380 Question: Using the Touch's embedded SBS... - I plan to use it as my main server/library - I plan to use it occasionally, such as when a friend brings around a USB drive - I have no interest it using it at all really I plan to get a Touch for my house, as replacement for an SB3 (to be mothballed as spare) and only use as player/controller. If it desn't 'add' to my experience as a player (my concern is screen is too small compared to SB3) then it will get donated to girlfriend. The TinySC may act as a back-up server (though p.c. already does that to main server) or for guests iPods. I may also take Touch and Harddrive away on longer trips. I'll try Tiny SC and if successful then will get Touch for girlfriend, who doesn't have/want a server (no space for even a free old p.c.). If neither TinySC nor player/controller works I'll be both very surprised and disappointed. But for me, the master Powerline (into router) is direct. All 4 others were on extension leads with the SB, and powered speakers (or PS3 and TV) so that I could switch the whole lot on or off together (and have enough sockets). So far no issues and better than wireless. -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio controlled by IR, SBC and iPeng on iPhone 7.4 running on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70113 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
