Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Worried about of the future of LMS..................
I guess I should have qualified the statement ...I'm happy. I'm not as concerned as I would be if I was still in the middle of building my system. I really only have one room where I could use a squeezebox (dining room) but it's used so infrequently (1 maybe 2 days per year) it really isn't necessary. Yes, if one of my squeezeboxes croaked, I'd have a hard time finding a replacement. Booms haven't been made for a while, so I've been in that boat anyway. squeezeplayer software for iPods and Andriod devices could soften this blow. My daughter, if she had to, could use her iPod as her squeezebox. One day she may perfer this anyway. Yes, trust takes time to build and can be lost in a single moment. I've been leary over the past year about the future of squeezebox. I was hoping that the recent announcement was going to restore confidence. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, but rather than totally blowing it, it's taken what I considered a very unexpected turn. I'm still curious to see what happens, but I have very little bordering on no hope of the product line being what it once was. I'll never see the stereo boom based on the Radio design we hoped for...that would have been cool!!! maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96262 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I haven't done it myself, but I think you would have to log into the touch to a command prompt and execute a cp (copy) command to copy the files. How do you log into a command prompt you ask? That I don't remember offhand. You will also have to figure out at which locations in the file system that the usb drive and the sd card are mounted. maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95220 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] mount iPod as USB drive to SB touch
I think it depends on the iPod. For instance, my 5.5G 80GB iPod will mount as a USB mass storage device (meaning, it shows up in Windows as a disc drive with a drive letter associated with it). My iPod Touch will not. So, unless you are using an old iPod that can mount as a mass storage device, this won't work. -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 4 Booms, 1 Duet, 1 Receiver, 1 Touch, iPeng on iPod Touch, SqueezeCommander on Xoom. iPeng has playback integrated, so you can use iPeng as both a controller and a squeezebox player. On an iPhone, everything could be setup that you could play from your squeezebox server over the internet in your car or where ever. There is a separate app that is only a player that you can get too which you could use in combination with the free Logitech controller app. If asthetics are important to you, iPeng looks like a native iOS app, whereas the Logitech app looks like a port from the SB Controller (which I'm sure it is). iPeng also has integration with wikipedia, facebook, and some other things. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Tablet for the Touch
A controller app doesn't care about file format, so FLAC support isn't an issue. However, there are a couple of apps on the iPod/iPad that will make the device act like a squeezebox. iPeng has playback capability built in and there is a separate app you can get to do playback. There are also andriod solutions for contorller and playback. I have both an iPod Touch and a Motorola Xoom, so have both flavors. Both work equally well as a controller and player. My wife has a kindle fire, which is Andriod based. It works as a controller and player too. I don't own one, but a Barnes and Noble Nook Color or Nook Tablet could work too. Look around for refurbs of tablets (Nook Color, Xoom) and you can find a good deal. I would stay away from no-name andriod tablets - they usually don't have good app market or os update support. -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 4 Booms, 1 Duet, 1 Receiver, 1 Touch, iPeng on iPod Touch, SqueezeCommander on Xoom. No matter which compression level you set, the same decompressed data is generated at decode time. A higher number will result in slightly smaller files. As you increase the number, the amount of CPU (thus time) to generate the FLAC file goes up significantly. At the same time, the amount of decrease in the file size does not drop tremendously. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Optical vs RCA - electronic interference
Are they higher bit rate streams that cause the noise? I could be that some streams cause a large spike in CPU usage due to pre buffering and stuff and the noise you are hearing is digital hash from the CPU. The onboard audio of cheap laptops are notorious for this type of behavior. A poorly shielded set of RCA patch cables may be allowing the electrical noise from the digital circuits in the squeezebox to leak into the audio path. -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 4 Booms, 1 Duet, 1 Receiver, 1 Touch, iPeng on iPod Touch, SqueezeCommander on Xoom. It certainly won't sound any worse :-). I own an E11 amp and I'm really happy with it. It is very quiet and has some good oomph to it. The headphone out on the SB3 was noisy which I know from experience. I never tried the headphone out on the Touch, but I suspect it won't be as quiet as the E11. What headphones do you have? If they are high impedence, you would definitely benefit from an outboard amp. FiiO does have a desktop amp in their lineup (E9) which may be better suited to your setup. The E11 is nice sounding, but the one thing I don't like is the volume control is stiff and requires you to hold the amp with one had as you turn the volume knob with the other. This isn't too much of a problem in a portable application, but it is really annoying in a home setup. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] tinysc scanning questions
You want to list the albums in the file system and the albums in the squeezeboxserver database. Then compare the 2 lists. To get the list from the filesystem, you can use dir /s with some other options to only list directories (I'm assuming you have a directory for each album). Getting a list from the database is more of a challenge. I seem to recall a script or a plugin that would generate an html file representing your music library based on the squeezeboxserver database. It would be a little tedious, but you could then sort your lists and read through them to find what's missing. Do you have a mix of filetypes in your library? Perhaps some of the filetypes are being exluded. Is it possible you have some files that have DRM in them (iTunes, etc.)? These will not be loaded into your library. Another possible issue if directory permissions. Once you come up with a few albums that aren't showing up, you can look for a common denominator to figure out what is wrong. -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 4 Booms, 1 Duet, 1 Receiver, 1 Touch, iPeng on iPod Touch. I'm sure there is some logging that you can turn on that will include information about the names of the files played. Another way to do this is through last.fm. Would you also say browsing and selecting is pretty Similar with both. When I first got my Squeezebox Touch last spring, I had it sitting next to my listening chair connected to a headphone amp. I found it a little awkward to have to reach over and operate the touch interface. I've since swapped my Squeezebox Touch with an old SB3 from the family room. I use my iPod touch to control the SB3 while in my listening chair now. The interface of iPeng on the iPod Touch is snappier and smoother. It is also easier because I can hold my iPod touch right in front of me. If the iPod touch battery is starting to run low, I plug it into a wall charger with the sync cable. Since I'm not moving around, this isn't an issue. From my listening chair, I find the iPod Touch/SB3 combination to be a much more pleasant experience than the Squeezebox Touch. The Squeezebox Touch is better suited to the family room, where everybody can enjoy it and the touch interface is less awkward to use since you are in a standing position. -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 4 Booms, 1 Duet, 1 Receiver, 1 Touch, iPeng on iPod Touch. +1 for iPod Touch and iPeng. I got an iPod Touch recently and loaded iPeng on it before I loaded any music on it :-). It really is fantastic to use. My favorite feature is that albums are displayed in *year* order! :-). I've been waiting for years for Logitech to fix this in their software. If you perfer the alphabetical listing of albums, you can configure iPeng to do it that way too. I only have my iPod Touch for 4 days or so and already I'm using my laptop a lot less. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 2nd Touch Question
You have a good plan. There is no reason not to expect that your second touch shouldn't work well streaming FLAC. Assuming that you don't have interference issues with WiFi, wireless should work. The only potential issue is that the microwave can destroy your wireless signal when it is running. For this reason, I went to using a powerline ethernet adapter solution for the kitchen. Before havning more CAT-5 run, you might want to do a price comparison. Powerline adapters aren't cheap ($100+ for a pair typically), but it is most likely cheaper than hiring an electrician to run more CAT-5. You can also use both touches at the same time - even sync them together to play the same stuff. You can use the same mysqueezebox.com account on both Touch players. Good luck with your ripping project. I had the job of ripping my CDs, my wife's CDs, and also my kids (ages 1, 3, and 6). Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch semi-bricked?
This seems like a real sticky problem. I'm pulling at straws here, but could there be a process that is crashing? Are core dumps enabled on the Touch by default? If not, I've used the command ulimit -c unlimited on Linux systems to enable them. If you look at the man page for ulimit, I believe you can use the command to query the status of core dump file generation (i.e. is it enabled or not). To locate any core files, search the file system for core or *core*. If it is dropping core, then the next step is figuring what is crashing. Yes! It did that to my CD players. It's been years since I've played a CD in my house. I actually have used my turntable more often to digitize some of my old lps to listen on my squeezebox. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Altering the angle of the Touch
Fortunately it's angled far back so adjustment is typically to lean it further forward. It would be much more difficult to lean it back fruther and keep it stationary when you use it. I've read here of somebody using legos and blue-tack (I used to know that as fun-tack). It would have been nice to see it made adjustable, but it would have complicated the design and probably would have been more expensive. I like the fact that there is no wiggle room what-so-ever in the stand. That would have been hard to acheive with an adjustable stand. The bail bar in the back is removable making the Touch wall mountable. I wonder if it would be possible to loosen the screws and wedge something in there to acheive a different angle without shearing the screws. I'll have a look when I get home. -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 4 Booms, 1 Duet, 1 Receiver, 1 Touch. SuSE 11.0 Server running SqueezeBoxServer 7.5.0, MusicIP, and SqueezeSlave. The burn-in described here is not about burning them in to make them better it's about burning them in to see if/when they fail 2) The mere fact that (audio) equipment ALWAYS sounds better after being burned-in really should give you pause for thought. Why would this be? - after all, we know that actually electrolytic caps begin to deteriorate as soon as you start using them... What law of the universe determines that burn-in is always beneficial to audio quality? Have you EVER heard anyone say it sounded great at first then it got worse... No, thought not. The reason is simple. It is NOT happening in physical reality. 3) Over a year ago I got my Touch. In preparation for this very question I made some recordings (24/192) of the analogue and digital outputs when it was just out of the box, after 1 week, 1 month and nearly 12 months. AudioDiffMaker finds nothing different in these recordings. 4) Human audio memory is rubbish. We are (mostly) great at pitch, rhythm/timing, harmony, melody and timbre. Very poor at everything else. I just can't recall the last time I felt my new computer improved its speed and crispness of image, disk read speed etc during its first few days/weeks of usage... The analogue circuit of the Touch comprises the DAC chip, two caps and a resistor. These are not the sort of caps that burn-in (form). None of this matters. What matters is that you like the sound, now that you are used to it. +1 Having an electronics background from years ago, burn-in to me was always about running electonics over a long period of time to gain confidence that none of the components would fail due to infant mortality. It was about improving performance or making then work better. Yes, the brain and how it affects perception is very powerful. In a completely different area - has you car ever run smoother, faster, etc. because you washed and waxed it? Because you changed the oil? Mine has :-). And I'm still not immune. [SlimDevices: Touch] Logitech knocked it out of the park with the Touch!
I received my Touch today from Crutchfield. What an awesome product. It is of very sturdy construction and has a very classy look to it. The screen is a nice size and angled well to avoid glare. The touch screen is very responsive. I spent the evening using it as a controller just to get it going. After putting the kids to bed, I hooked it up to my headphone rig. It is a pleasure to use. I was worried about it being a little awkward using a touch screen, especially with my left hand, but I've gotten used to it quickly. It fits in nicely on the table next to my man chair. I think I have a second one in my future to replace the SB3 in our family room. It really makes a great drop-in replacement for an SB3. My wife thought the Touch had a very updated look. As far as setup, I had absolutely NO problems. This is in tremendous contrast with the Duet. I struggled with the Duet. I persevered because it was such a cool product and was VERY useful. The Touch is a dream to use and setup right off the bat! I think Logitech made good use of the time they took to delay the release - they have a solid product here, even on it's initial release. I wish them lots of success with it. Hopefully they can get their distribution issues straightened out. As a point of clarification - I'm using it as a player and controller, not a server. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Access the connectet USB Drive?
This is interesting. I saw from another thread that the touch can't see directories shared on the network. Would it have been that much more overhead to have the SAMBA client as well as the server running? Regarding seeing the drive connected to the Touch on the network, has anybody managed their library remotely using this functionality? What I mean by this is ripping/encoding/tagging files to the drive attached to the Touch from a computer on the network. If that works well, that's very cool. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Access the connectet USB Drive?
Thanks Jim. That's what I suspected given the talk of performance limitations. I manage my rips over the network for convenience. My server is in the basement running Linux. I perfer to use dbPowerAmp, a Windows app, to rip. I rip/encode to FLAC at the same time. It saves me the step of having to copy the file over when I'm done. I was surprised that this worked as well as it does when I first tried it. The network isn't a signifcant bottleneck. I suspect this works well because dbPowerAmp rips to memory and encodes from there. So it's not a case where the data sent across the network, read back over the network, encoded, and then written back over the network. -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 4 Booms, 1 duet, 1 receiver. This time at least they are in code lockdown (code freeze) except for bug fixes, so there is another indicator that this thing should be released soon. Hopefully it is more toward the beginning of April rather than the end. -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 4 Booms, 1 duet, 1 receiver.
