IMHO, if they don't have a Touch equivalent plus synchronization
capability among devices, then they would never be a competitor in the
 music system market (SONOS).

 I,personally, am not interested in a walk-around-take-to-the-beach
 audio device (UE Boom).
I'm interested in a complete music SYSTEM such as the SB ecosystem that
I enjoy so much nowTouch,Radios,Booms all in harmony. At this time
the UE system does NOT provide this (although I can see potential).

I still have faith in LOGITECH though and I do not think they would
throw past loyal supporters like myself under the bus.

LOGITECH seems to be a respectable ethical company and ,I believe, they
will be loyal to their consumers as their supporters are to them. So ,
before I explore other options for my music system, I will be patient
and have faith that LOGITECH'S standards and their integrity are what I
 think they are.

I would share your enthusiasm except for a few things:
1) The logitech Revue debacle, which put the entire company in jeopordy,
not just the media division.
2) The sentiment of the employees posting in these threads. They don't
seem very positive about recent developments.
3) This post from Ben
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?96188-New-Squeezebox-Radiop=714488viewfull=1#post714488)
paints a pretty dismal picture of a company that has no clue about the
marketplace that the Squeezebox plays in. Not too surprising from a
company that makes most of its revenue from keyboards, mice, and PC
speakers.

Regarding the a UE version of the Touch. My personal opinion is that if
it's in the wings, it's not imminent. I suspect they are going to have
a wait and see approach. Were the Touch sales really that great? I
know the Radio absolutely took off for them. And I don't think it's a
coincidence that it's the Radio that was canibalized for the UE Radio to
start off with. If the UE Radio doesn't sell well, I think we can kiss
the squeezebox line AND the UE Radio and friends good-bye for good.

I have no immediate need for squeezeboxes at the moment, so I'm happy.
If I were in the middle of building up my system, I would have been very
upset.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Worried about of the future of LMS..................

2012-09-02 Thread maggior

I guess I should have qualified the statement ...I'm happy. I'm not
as concerned as I would be if I was still in the middle of building my
system. I really only have one room where I could use a squeezebox
(dining room) but it's used so infrequently (1 maybe 2 days per year) it
really isn't necessary.

Yes, if one of my squeezeboxes croaked, I'd have a hard time finding a
replacement. Booms haven't been made for a while, so I've been in that
boat anyway. squeezeplayer software for iPods and Andriod devices could
soften this blow. My daughter, if she had to, could use her iPod as her
squeezebox. One day she may perfer this anyway.

Yes, trust takes time to build and can be lost in a single moment. I've
been leary over the past year about the future of squeezebox. I was
hoping that the recent announcement was going to restore confidence.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, but rather than totally blowing it,
it's taken what I considered a very unexpected turn. I'm still curious
to see what happens, but I have very little bordering on no hope of the
product line being what it once was.

I'll never see the stereo boom based on the Radio design we hoped
for...that would have been cool!!!

I haven't done it myself, but I think you would have to log into the
touch to a command prompt and execute a cp (copy) command to copy the
files. How do you log into a command prompt you ask? That I don't
remember offhand. You will also have to figure out at which locations
in the file system that the usb drive and the sd card are mounted.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] mount iPod as USB drive to SB touch

2012-03-23 Thread maggior

I think it depends on the iPod. For instance, my 5.5G 80GB iPod will
mount as a USB mass storage device (meaning, it shows up in Windows as
a disc drive with a drive letter associated with it). My iPod Touch
will not.

So, unless you are using an old iPod that can mount as a mass storage
device, this won't work.

iPeng has playback integrated, so you can use iPeng as both a controller
and a squeezebox player. On an iPhone, everything could be setup that
you could play from your squeezebox server over the internet in your
car or where ever. There is a separate app that is only a player that
you can get too which you could use in combination with the free
Logitech controller app.

If asthetics are important to you, iPeng looks like a native iOS app,
whereas the Logitech app looks like a port from the SB Controller
(which I'm sure it is).

iPeng also has integration with wikipedia, facebook, and some other
things.

Honestly, I use my Xoom with SqueezeCommander as a controller more
often than my iPod Touch, so I haven't been really paying close
attention to recent iPeng enhancements.

A controller app doesn't care about file format, so FLAC support isn't
an issue. However, there are a couple of apps on the iPod/iPad that
will make the device act like a squeezebox. iPeng has playback
capability built in and there is a separate app you can get to do
playback.

There are also andriod solutions for contorller and playback.

I have both an iPod Touch and a Motorola Xoom, so have both flavors.
Both work equally well as a controller and player. My wife has a
kindle fire, which is Andriod based. It works as a controller and
player too. I don't own one, but a Barnes and Noble Nook Color or Nook
Tablet could work too.

Look around for refurbs of tablets (Nook Color, Xoom) and you can find
a good deal. I would stay away from no-name andriod tablets - they
usually don't have good app market or os update support.

LOL, you guys are too funny! I do have a sincere question though.
When ripping to Flac using DBpoweramp, I've always left the compression
level at the default 5. Is there a better setting or does it
matter? Or does the answer depend on how many symetrical stones I
have in front of my Touch?

Symmetrical stones aside :-), it doesn't really matter what compression
level you set for FLAC. No matter which compression level you set, the
same decompressed data is generated at decode time.

A higher number will result in slightly smaller files. As you increase
the number, the amount of CPU (thus time) to generate the FLAC file goes
up significantly. At the same time, the amount of decrease in the file
size does not drop tremendously. You very quickly hit a point of
diminishing returns.

I use dbPowerAmp myself and have left the compression value set to its
default value.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Optical vs RCA - electronic interference

2011-11-16 Thread maggior

Are they higher bit rate streams that cause the noise? I could be that
some streams cause a large spike in CPU usage due to pre buffering and
stuff and the noise you are hearing is digital hash from the CPU.
The onboard audio of cheap laptops are notorious for this type of
behavior.

A poorly shielded set of RCA patch cables may be allowing the
electrical noise from the digital circuits in the squeezebox to leak
into the audio path.

It certainly won't sound any worse :-).

I own an E11 amp and I'm really happy with it. It is very quiet and
has some good oomph to it. The headphone out on the SB3 was noisy
which I know from experience. I never tried the headphone out on the
Touch, but I suspect it won't be as quiet as the E11.

What headphones do you have? If they are high impedence, you would
definitely benefit from an outboard amp.

FiiO does have a desktop amp in their lineup (E9) which may be better
suited to your setup. The E11 is nice sounding, but the one thing I
don't like is the volume control is stiff and requires you to hold the
amp with one had as you turn the volume knob with the other. This
isn't too much of a problem in a portable application, but it is really
annoying in a home setup. You wouldn't have this issue with the desktop
amp.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] tinysc scanning questions

2011-03-08 Thread maggior

You want to list the albums in the file system and the albums in the
squeezeboxserver database. Then compare the 2 lists.

To get the list from the filesystem, you can use dir /s with some
other options to only list directories (I'm assuming you have a
directory for each album). Getting a list from the database is more of
a challenge. I seem to recall a script or a plugin that would generate
an html file representing your music library based on the
squeezeboxserver database.

It would be a little tedious, but you could then sort your lists and
read through them to find what's missing.

Do you have a mix of filetypes in your library? Perhaps some of the
filetypes are being exluded. Is it possible you have some files that
have DRM in them (iTunes, etc.)? These will not be loaded into your
library.

Another possible issue if directory permissions.

Once you come up with a few albums that aren't showing up, you can look
for a common denominator to figure out what is wrong.

devices (ie, models), and (b) number of units in use. I think all those
ALAC-supporting iPods would count for a lot in (b).

True, but I was thinking more in terms of non-portable devices. When I
think of lossless, I don't tend to think of portable devices. That's
probably just me though :-).

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] I need to buy a Squeezebox Touch

2011-02-04 Thread maggior

Do they have an existing audio system to plug a squeezebox touch into?
If not, you might consider the Squeezebox Boom or Squeezebox Radio,
which are standalone units and may be better suited for your
application. The Boom is stereo but has a monochrome display; the
Radio is mono, less power than the Boom, but has a color LCD screen.

You can purchase directly from Logitech. You can also order from
Amazon and usually get a discount from list price.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Poll - Do you actually use the touch screen?

2011-01-27 Thread maggior

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85129

Question: How Much do you use the touch screen?

- Never - IR, Android/I-device or Web Gui.
- I only use Touch Screen
- Occasionally.
- Half the time I use the touch screen.
- More touch screen than anything else?

I used the touch screen exclusively until I got an iPod Touch and loaded
iPeng. Like Soulkeeper, I had my touch set up next to my listening
chair hooked up to a headphone rig. It turns out that the iPeng/SB3
setup by my listening chair works out better.

My Touch is now in my family room where the SB3 used to be. If I'm on
the couch, I'll use iPeng. If I'm up, I'll use the touch's touch
interface.

I find that the touch interface is a little awkward because of the
angle and the fact that I'm standing over it. Ipeng isn't awkward at
all since it is in your hand.

There is no such plug-in. Since the iPod Touch and iPhone don't don't
act like drives when plugged in via USB (like the older iPods did), it
can't be read like a drive.

Media Monkey can read the contents of the iPod touch, so there is

I'm sure there is some logging that you can turn on that will include
information about the names of the files played.

Another way to do this is through last.fm. In the player settings you

a remote. How does letter size compare on the ipod, and does most of
the info when album browsing (band/album name) fit on the line OK with
out having to scroll the information as on controller. Would you also
say browsing and selecting is pretty Similar with both.

When I first got my Squeezebox Touch last spring, I had it sitting next
to my listening chair connected to a headphone amp. I found it a little
awkward to have to reach over and operate the touch interface. I've
since swapped my Squeezebox Touch with an old SB3 from the family room.
I use my iPod touch to control the SB3 while in my listening chair now.
The interface of iPeng on the iPod Touch is snappier and smoother. It
is also easier because I can hold my iPod touch right in front of me.
If the iPod touch battery is starting to run low, I plug it into a wall
charger with the sync cable. Since I'm not moving around, this isn't an
issue.

From my listening chair, I find the iPod Touch/SB3 combination to be a
much more pleasant experience than the Squeezebox Touch. The
Squeezebox Touch is better suited to the family room, where everybody
can enjoy it and the touch interface is less awkward to use since you
are in a standing position.

+1 for iPod Touch and iPeng. I got an iPod Touch recently and loaded
iPeng on it before I loaded any music on it :-). It really is
fantastic to use.

My favorite feature is that albums are displayed in *year* order! :-).
I've been waiting for years for Logitech to fix this in their software.
If you perfer the alphabetical listing of albums, you can configure
iPeng to do it that way too.

I only have my iPod Touch for 4 days or so and already I'm using my
laptop a lot less. It's amazing how useful it is for surfing the web

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 2nd Touch Question

2010-08-30 Thread maggior

You have a good plan. There is no reason not to expect that your second
touch shouldn't work well streaming FLAC. Assuming that you don't have
interference issues with WiFi, wireless should work. The only
potential issue is that the microwave can destroy your wireless signal
when it is running. For this reason, I went to using a powerline
ethernet adapter solution for the kitchen. Before havning more CAT-5
run, you might want to do a price comparison. Powerline adapters
aren't cheap ($100+ for a pair typically), but it is most likely
cheaper than hiring an electrician to run more CAT-5.

You can also use both touches at the same time - even sync them
together to play the same stuff.

You can use the same mysqueezebox.com account on both Touch players.

Good luck with your ripping project. I had the job of ripping my CDs,
my wife's CDs, and also my kids (ages 1, 3, and 6). Fortunately nobody
else in the house has as large a collection as me :-).

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch semi-bricked?

2010-08-18 Thread maggior

This seems like a real sticky problem. I'm pulling at straws here, but
could there be a process that is crashing? Are core dumps enabled on
the Touch by default? If not, I've used the command ulimit -c
unlimited on Linux systems to enable them. If you look at the man
page for ulimit, I believe you can use the command to query the status
of core dump file generation (i.e. is it enabled or not).

To locate any core files, search the file system for core or
*core*.

If it is dropping core, then the next step is figuring what is
crashing.

If this were a server running Linux, this is something I'd look for -
perhaps it's applicable to the Touch.

Here's the free overnight shipping code for ordering on the Logitech
website: logi_touch. I've seen where others have used it recently.

Actually, at the moment the website isn't adding a charge for next day
shipping even before I enter the code. Wierd.

possible? If not I guess I have to downgrade my SB3 to a display,
turning off all IR and sync it to the Touch.

That should work. You can use the touch as a controller. I'm doing

The touch is controllable with the IR remote too, so you'll want to

Obviously I took only a cursory look at this before. The screws aren't
even regular screws - they require a special driver! There are only 2
screws, not 4 (2 for each side).

You could always take a pair of pliers to bar and bend it to the

My entire library was mp3 intially setup for my iPod. I moved to FLAC
once storage space became rediculously cheap. I was glad that I did.
The squeezeboxes (SB3 in this case) definitely revealed differences I
could hear between my mp3s and FLAC. They were subtle, but they were
there. I found it advantageous to move. It also helps that FLAC is
the unstated standard format for squeezeboxes, so its playback is
stable from release to release.

Yes! It did that to my CD players. It's been years since I've played

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Altering the angle of the Touch

2010-04-23 Thread maggior

Fortunately it's angled far back so adjustment is typically to lean it
further forward. It would be much more difficult to lean it back
fruther and keep it stationary when you use it.

I've read here of somebody using legos and blue-tack (I used to know
that as fun-tack).

It would have been nice to see it made adjustable, but it would have
complicated the design and probably would have been more expensive. I
like the fact that there is no wiggle room what-so-ever in the stand.
That would have been hard to acheive with an adjustable stand.

The bail bar in the back is removable making the Touch wall mountable.
I wonder if it would be possible to loosen the screws and wedge
something in there to acheive a different angle without shearing the
screws. I'll have a look when I get home.

 1) burn-in testing as described in the links posted earlier is about
stress testing (often to destruction) to determine mortality rates etc,
especially in high voltage, high risk components. The sort of components
found in audio gear are rather different - except for large caps used in
valve HT circuits. The burn-in described here is not about burning them
in to make them better it's about burning them in to see if/when they
 fail

 2) The mere fact that (audio) equipment ALWAYS sounds better after
being burned-in really should give you pause for thought. Why would
this be? - after all, we know that actually electrolytic caps begin to
deteriorate as soon as you start using them... What law of the universe
determines that burn-in is always beneficial to audio quality? Have you
EVER heard anyone say it sounded great at first then it got worse...
No, thought not. The reason is simple. It is NOT happening in physical
 reality.

 3) Over a year ago I got my Touch. In preparation for this very
question I made some recordings (24/192) of the analogue and digital
outputs when it was just out of the box, after 1 week, 1 month and
nearly 12 months. AudioDiffMaker finds nothing different in these
 recordings.

 4) Human audio memory is rubbish. We are (mostly) great at pitch,
rhythm/timing, harmony, melody and timbre. Very poor at everything
else. The brain on the other hand is the most powerful and elegant
 thing in creation...

 5) I really hope no-one believes that the digital circuits burn-in. I
just can't recall the last time I felt my new computer improved its
speed and crispness of image, disk read speed etc during its first few
days/weeks of usage... The analogue circuit of the Touch comprises the
DAC chip, two caps and a resistor. These are not the sort of caps that
 burn-in (form).

None of this matters. What matters is that you like the sound, now that
 you are used to it.

+1

Having an electronics background from years ago, burn-in to me was
always about running electonics over a long period of time to gain
confidence that none of the components would fail due to infant
mortality. It was about improving performance or making then work
better.

Yes, the brain and how it affects perception is very powerful. In a
completely different area - has you car ever run smoother, faster, etc.
because you washed and waxed it? Because you changed the oil? Mine has
:-). And I'm still not immune. I recently had my car detailed and I
swear my car runs better. Does it really? Of course not, but my brain
perceives it as such.

Setting up the Touch was as easy as it was to set up my SB3. Actually,
it's easier because the Touch interface gives you a virtual keyboard to

The Duet has come a long way since it was initially released. It has

there is no doubt some confusion when setting up SBR's whether you're
talking to the SBC or the SBR... The Touch and Radio don't have that
 layer of confusion to them.)

I left the radio out only because I don't own one and can't comment on
it based on first hand use; I only know what's been said about it here.
What you say makes sense.

Your comment on SqueezeOS is maturing is what I was driving at: Duet
maturing = SqueezeOS maturing. Touch uses SqueezeOS, therefor Touch
benefits from Duet maturity.

Good, I'm not nuts :-). Seeing comments like the duet has nothing to
do with the Touch were making me wonder if I understood the
architecture correctly.

You could accomplish that by purchasing a SBR (the player part of the

This assumes that one day you'll be able to buy a seperate player one

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch hits Slickdeals - 225$ from Logitech if honored

2010-04-16 Thread maggior

I currently have mine setup with a headphone rig too. The touch
interface seemed a little awkward to me at first (just the fact that it
is a touch interface - nothing to do with how Logitech designed it), but
I'm surprised how quickly I've gotten used to it, even using my left
hand.

My wife really liked it too. I think we have another Touch in our
future to replaced the SB3 in the family room. Yes, my wife is an
enabler :-).

It's great that is functions like a controller too. Awesome product!

[SlimDevices: Touch] Logitech knocked it out of the park with the Touch!

2010-04-16 Thread maggior

I received my Touch today from Crutchfield. What an awesome product.
It is of very sturdy construction and has a very classy look to it.
The screen is a nice size and angled well to avoid glare. The touch
screen is very responsive. I spent the evening using it as a
controller just to get it going. After putting the kids to bed, I
hooked it up to my headphone rig. It is a pleasure to use. I was
worried about it being a little awkward using a touch screen,
especially with my left hand, but I've gotten used to it quickly. It
fits in nicely on the table next to my man chair.

I think I have a second one in my future to replace the SB3 in our
family room. It really makes a great drop-in replacement for an SB3.
My wife thought the Touch had a very updated look.

As far as setup, I had absolutely NO problems. This is in tremendous
contrast with the Duet. I struggled with the Duet. I persevered
because it was such a cool product and was VERY useful. The Touch is a
dream to use and setup right off the bat!

I think Logitech made good use of the time they took to delay the
release - they have a solid product here, even on it's initial release.
I wish them lots of success with it. Hopefully they can get their
distribution issues straightened out.

As a point of clarification - I'm using it as a player and controller,
not a server. I may do that at one point to tinker.

I ordered directly from Crutchfield and my order status is that it will

What I will say about Logitech (although the credit should go to the
Slimdevices team), is that our worst fears did not occur. Rather than
taking the Squeezebox line down a low-price/low-quality commodity path
as many feared, instead they significantly expanded the Squeezebox
lineup with high quality, complementary products such as the Boom and
Radio and then came out with the Touch which is a substantial
improvement over the Duet and SB3 in all aspects.

Were mistakes made along the way? Sure. But I for one am a very happy
Squeezebox customer and the Touch was definitely worth the wait.

Can't wait to see what's next!

A lot of what came out after the acquisition were projects that were
already in-flight. What's come out since have been variations on those
themes. The credit Logtech gets, in my mind anyway, is not getting in
the way of those in-flight projects. What happens next I think will be
very telling since anything new coming out now is probably something
dreamed up by Logitech without the benefit of Dean or Sean. Hopfully
the distribution issues we've seen as of late aren't an indicator of
things to come! :-).

I look forward to what is next too! I can't wait for my Touch to be
delivered - it seems like it will have been worth the wait. I'm sure a
boom with a touch screen, or at least a color display, will show up at
some point.

This is interesting. I saw from another thread that the touch can't see
directories shared on the network. Would it have been that much more
overhead to have the SAMBA client as well as the server running?

Regarding seeing the drive connected to the Touch on the network, has
anybody managed their library remotely using this functionality? What
I mean by this is ripping/encoding/tagging files to the drive attached
to the Touch from a computer on the network. If that works well,
that's very cool. That's how I manage the files on my server now.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Access the connectet USB Drive?

2010-04-13 Thread maggior

Thanks Jim. That's what I suspected given the talk of performance
limitations.

I manage my rips over the network for convenience. My server is in the
basement running Linux. I perfer to use dbPowerAmp, a Windows app, to
rip. I rip/encode to FLAC at the same time. It saves me the step of
having to copy the file over when I'm done. I was surprised that this
worked as well as it does when I first tried it. The network isn't a
signifcant bottleneck.

I suspect this works well because dbPowerAmp rips to memory and encodes
from there. So it's not a case where the data sent across the network,
read back over the network, encoded, and then written back over the
network.

Currently I have a over 20 year-old Sony bookshelf stero that is
getting rather cranky. The tape player and the CD player have some
eccentricities. I am trying to figure out what I will need for a system
 once I get my Touch.

Do I want to keep what I have and just plug the Touch into the AUX port
of the existing system? Do I want to get a pair of good powered speakers
and get rid of the current system altogether and just have the Touch
attached directly. I am not an audiophile. I don't play ear-bleed music
 or thumpa-dumpa base.

If you are content with the sound of your current system and the
system's crankiness has nothing to do with the AUX input, I would say
stick with your bookshelf system. In the future you could upgrade that
if you want.

Sounds like a good plan!

I have this device myself. It is awesome, I really enjoy using it and
it produces some very good recordings. I've recommended this device to
a bunch of people.

mpower9;533513 Wrote:
In the mean time, can I use the USB connection of the gizmo to play the

record or cassette prevent the Touch from playing it?

There was talk of doing something like this. Somebody may have hacked
something to make this work. Certainly, out of the box this will not
work. At this point, anything that would work would be very
experimental.

hifi. Would I be able to run it through the Touch if I got rid of the
 hifi?

No, there's no input aside for USB and network connections on the
Touch.

Have fun with your venture into computer based digital audio!

Wow, I can't believe they sold out of them already! Hopefully this
doesn't turn into a situation like the Receiver. Wow.

Either they sold a bazillion of these things in one day or there
weren't that many piled up in the warehouse.

Or the e-commerce site was misinformed about the number of units in the
warehouse :-).

Looking at Amazon's website, I realized that the Squeezebox Receiver
isn't listed either (and hasn't been for some time). Hopefully this
doesn't mean that the Touch is now in the same category as the Receiver
 - waiting for more units to be manufactured in some factory in China.

My optimism defalted a bit after realizing that.

Now I noticed that on Amazon, you can click on the Touch where they
show the entire SB family. This takes you to a page that says
unavailable.

I guess I missed my small window of opportunity yesterday when the
Logitech website had them available.

I thought being part of Logitech was supposed to be an *advantage*
regarding distribution.

Ugh!

 Reply from Mickey:

-No idea. From what we can tell from pre-orders, it's a big hit in
Europe. It will probably be available from those retailers in a few
 days.

In the United States, it will be available on the web and not at Best
Buy. US retailers seem to want an iPod dock on anything in their
 stores. :-(

 Mickey-

So web wise I would say Amazon. US Retailers looks like it might be a
while before its is seen there if at all.

Thanks iPhone. I'd rather give Amazon my business anyway - I don't

That might be true. In corporate terms (you know how managers love
their metrics :-), the end of the quarter is the end of this month, so I
would think they would be trying really hard to get it out in the first
quarter rather than have it fall just over the line into the 2nd

It does seem awfully quiet...perhaps the release is impending :-). Now
if I could just figure out where I could justify putting one...
